Ida Foster

"Diplomacy is overrated."

a character in “Of the Pagelings”, originally authored by Colors of Iris, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Name:

Ida Foster

Appearance:

Image

Age Appearance:

16

Genre:

Non-fiction children's book

Book Title:

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Personality:

Ida is very honest, sometimes to the point of bluntness. (This can be attributed to the non-fiction aspect of the book she's based on.) Personality-wise, she's very passive; a kind of "go with the flow" sort of person. To others, Ida comes off as something of an introvert—she rarely speaks, and when she does, it's almost always in quiet, terse sentences. Additionally, she has a tendency to get lost in thought and forget her surroundings. This all adds up to a rather cold and distant demeanor, which is the main reason why she doesn't have many friends.

Abilities:

In terms of physical fighting prowess? None. (She is, however, good at running.)

As for her papercraft ability, it mostly consists of defensive maneuvers. (Conjuring paper shields, for example, as opposed to paper weapons.) She can also animate paper cranes, although since the cranes retain all the properties of normal paper, they have little use in combat beyond distractions and paper cuts.

Weapons:

No weapons, either. She's a bit of a pacifist, and doesn't like fighting.

Oddities:

She loves folding origami, especially cranes. If you visit her room you'll see literally hundreds of paper cranes adorning the walls and shelves, sitting along the windowsill, even hanging from the ceiling by strings. In her bag, she keeps a well-maintained stash of origami paper, and carries it around wherever she goes.

So begins...

Ida sat in the city library, deriving calculus problems with one hand and idly folding a paper crane with the other. Aside from the librarian, she was the only person in the entire place.

She supposed she shouldn't be surprised. It was a Saturday, after all, and most people spent their Saturdays at the mall, or at the movies, or at a friend's house. Definitely not in a library, hunched over a math textbook, with nothing but dusty tomes and a cranky librarian for company.

But Ida was not most people, and she for one didn't mind at all. For her, the library was a familiar haven. The atmosphere was cool and airy, and there was an abundance of squashy armchairs in which she could snuggle up and fold origami. Or do calculus, as it was.

Now, Ida may not particularly like doing calculus, but she took schoolwork very seriously. She was already sixteen, and that meant there were only two more years until she turned eighteen and ceased being a minor. Only two years until she'd be kicked out of foster care, and have to fend for her own. And when that happened, a straight-A transcript and a high school diploma would be very useful things to have when it came to searching for a job.

"Ms. Foster," Mrs. Schmidt said.

Ida looked up, blinking in mild surprise. She'd been absorbed in her work and hadn't noticed the librarian coming up.

"We'll be closing in five minutes," Mrs. Schmidt informed her stiffly. "I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to leave."

After a quick glance at the digital clock on the wall, Ida simply nodded and gathered her things.

Time to find another place to study.

Ida walked steadily down the sidewalk, textbook under her arm and bag slung over her shoulder. It was a busy day on the streets, and she had to pause for traffic quite a few times to reach her destination: a street that she mentally called the "coffee shop district." This district had an abundance of small shops: tea shops, coffee shops, cafes, diners, and various others. She liked visiting the various shops because they were usually clean and quiet, and they smelled nice. It was very calm and relaxing, and was the perfect place to get a little work done.

Today, though, there was an ungodly number of people strolling the district. The little tea shop that was usually so quiet and empty was now crowded; the coffee shop likewise was also packed; the diner was busy and noisy.

Ida frowned slightly. At this rate, she'd have to go back to her room at the group home to study. And she didn't like hanging around the group home, because the atmosphere there was heavy and stifling. None of the kids there liked her, either.

She was about to give up the district as a lost cause when a cafe caught her eye. As she walked nearer, she noted the name of the cafe: "Wonderland." An interesting moniker, that. And from what she could see through the glass panes, the cafe was empty save for two people. This was promising.

Hefting her bag, Ida entered the cafe. (Strangely enough, there didn't seem to be anyone at the cash register.) She chose a table in a corner and sat down. With some effort, she managed not to stare at the bizarre-looking people who had entered the cafe before her, although it was very, very difficult. The man, for one, was wearing an absurdly colorful scarf; as for the woman...heavens, was that a sword?
