a character in “On a Whim”, as played by BekaL101

Description

Skye is about 5'10'' with white/blonde hair and bright amber coloured eyes. The reason for his odd eyes is that he is Beast Kin, a race from the moutain provinces of Mishura, whose souls are bound to a certain type of animal at birth, a link which allows them to shift into that form at will, although they can sometimes shift unknowingly when they are asleep, or be forced to shift when they are in a state of heightened emotion or in pain. Electric shocks (caused by lightning attacks) are most effective at forcing the change though, as they cause the human muscles to spasm and the beast kin loses control of his form. Skye's animal link is with the snow leopard, although aside from his odd eyes, the only other signs of what he is are the fact that his nails and teeth are longer and sharper than a human's. He is 18 years old, but Beast kin live a long time, so he would probably live until he's at least 2/300 years old.

Personality

Because of his almost twin souls, Skye's personality is quite odd, to put it mildly. As his human self, he is mature and logical, but still knows how to have a bit of fun now and again. As his beast form however, Skye is ruthless and unfeeling, a true predator, only thinking of the kill. This would only happen when he was in his snow leopard form, but sometimes his beast personality slips through into his human form, especially just after he's shifted back to a human. This can work both ways though, with his human side bleeding through into his beast form, making for a highly confusing mix of personality.

Equipment

Weapons? None, as he would only need to shift into beast form and rip you limb from limb. If he so chooses to fight as a human however, he would much rather use his own hands and feet to fight. It feels more like the way he fights as an animal.

Other stuff?: He has a metal collar around his neck, placed on him by the guards at the Casta Camps, which prevents him from shifting. He can't remove it, as it's been melded with lightning magick, which is especially painful as that makes him shift, but the collar itself prevents him from doing so. One word: Ouch...

History

Grew up as normal as a Beast kin could, though it took him a bit longer to develop the control he needed to avoid shifting at random times. While he is a Leopard-kin, he actually grew up among a different race, a clan of White tigers, who took him in when his mother died in childbirth. When the people from the Camps came, they took him from his home when he was around 13 years old, since his beast form is especially rare. They then fitted the collar on him, and they use that for testing him, deliberatly shocking him and watching him struggle, to see how long he will last before the pain of not being able to complete the shift becomes too much for him. He doesn't know what happened to his adoptive clan, though he assumes they were killed when he was taken.

So begins...

Skye nodded when the tiger explained his reasons for being here. It made sense, why go where they would expect when you could hide right under their noses? It was a standard tactic, as far as his understanding of such things went. The other male's explanation worried him though: where did that leave them? If they couldn't hide on the mainland, did that mean they had to stay on this ship too? And what of Aria's injuries? If they were to go back to the mainland, how were they to get very far while she was still hurt? Skye could probably carry her, but that would limit their travles to cross-country routes, which would make getting supplies difficult. Then again, he could hunt, if he remembered how. It had been a long time, but he was pretty sure the instinct was still there.
"That makes sense...so you are just going to get us to the mainland and then we go from there?", he asked, just to be sure.

Razer shrugged his shoulders. "That is up to you two." He stated, looking Aria and Skye over. "We will dock at Reeper's Land in a few days, and it will be up to the two of you whether or not you want to take off and chance your lives on the mainland. Though with her injuries..."

"Aria," she mumbled, not liking that the man kept referring to her as her, or woman. It was just all to awkward.

"Fine, but with Aria injured, the two of you won't get very far." Razer stated, not sure what else to offer. Though just as he was about to point out the woman's injuries again she sighed, rubbing it a little bit.

"We can take the mainland if you want," her amber eyes turned to Skye. "I'll have enough strength tomorrow to finish healing my wounds, from there we can take the forest through the demon lands toward Ra'zira and ask for refugee with a friend, who can give us safe passage to our homelands... or anywhere else we want to stay until the Casta Camp crisis blows over."

"Alright. That sounds like a plan.", Skye said to Aria, then turned to the tiger. "Since Aria has decided to give you her name, I will give you mine. It's Skye.", he stated, trying to sound less harsh with his words, but avoided eye contact. It was a habit he had built up over the years, many guards saw eye contact as a challenge, and would often punish people for it. So he had learned fairly quickly not to look at anyone directly. That was about the only advantage of having been taken so young: you learned things faster than older people would. He tugged on his hair, he hadn't really noticed, but it had really gotten long by now, the thick strands now coming to the middle of his back. He pushed back some of the hair that had fallen into his face, it was annoying him now, while before it had served as a barrier between him and everyone else. He would need to cut it now, once he had the chance.

Razer was actually not a fan of this plan. And learning that she could heal herself only meant that Aria was part of the fox clan past Ra'zira. Which meant that she was just like them and not human. It was no surprise that she had some type of supernatural blood in her line, but she did not come off as one of the lone foxes, especially since she managed to bring a leopard along for the ride. Razer shook his head lightly and then stood up. "Dinner will be done soon, I'll make sure they make enough for the two of you and bring some extras to the two of you. Being that I can't let you two die now." He then opened the door. "I suggest staying in here though, my crew is not exactly happy that I'm helping you escape."

Aria nodded, then leaned against the corner her bed was next to. "Thank you, Razer." She said softly. She closed her beautiful eyes and let out a sigh when the door shut. "Can we really trust him?" She turned her head to her new friend. "Can we trust an escapy that still works for the Sins?" she asked him more firmlythis time.

"Can we really trust him? Can we trust an escapee that still works for the Sins?", Aria asked him, and Skye snpped out of his own thoughts. To be honest, he had been thinking the same thing...

"I'm not sure, Aria...I mean he seems okay, and he wouldn't be helping us if he were just going to hand us back, would he? Regardless...do we really have a choice?", he asked, not liking the fact that he was answering a question with another question, but he wanted Aria's opinion on this matter. he wasn't really sure what to think of Razer, he had helped them yes, but the years in the Camps had made him paranoid, and he kept thinking of the way Sheela had been nice to him, only to cause him more pain later. She often did that, it made the eventual agony much worse. He didn't want to think that Razer would do the same, but the suspision was there anyway.

Aria moved on the bed, her hands rubbing over her injured leg, healing as she went. "We'll have to trust him." She stated, turning her beautiful amber eyes to Skye. "He is our only hope now." She took in a deep breath and moved some of her blond hair out of her face and leaned back on the wall a little more.

"Where will you go when we deem it safe in Ra'zira. Do you have someplace to return to on the mainland?" she asked, curious to learn more about her partner.

Aria's question startled Skye: he didn't actually know what he would do. Chances were, the clan were all dead, and he didn't know if any of his real family were still alive. He wouldn't even know where to start looking...

"I...guess I haven't thought about it. I don't know if there is a place for me anymore, my 'family' are probably all dead. It has been five years...and I never knew my parents...my real ones, that is. I don't even know much about my own 'breed', other than what I learned on my own. I learned stuff from the tigers, sure, but nothing about leopard abilities. You know, things that are unique to us, like your healing is unique to foxes, right?", he asked, struck by a sudden curiosity about the female.

Aria fiddled around with her fingers, staring down at the bed for a moment. "Not really..." she said softly. When people thought about the foxes they thought agility, smarts, and quickness, but it took Aria years to master any of those standard abilities because of the curse of the moon. She was the only arctic fox that the foxes had seen in years, and omen of change. "I'm much different from my brothers and sisters as well. I'm not a different breed," she glanced up, her amber eyes glittering with the faintness of tears, but she blinked them away so not to show any weakness.

"See, every so many decades the moon blesses our clan with an albino fox, known as the Moon Child." Aria moved on the bed, swinging her legs over the edge and standing up as best she could, being that she still didn't have her sea legs yet. "Unlike my brother's and sisters, I don't have a dark red coat that allows for great camo throughout the season, instead I only blend into one season, winter. I can heal myself with no problems, make the main go away, pull out poisons, last through torture much longer. But when I heal others I receive their wounds, their pain, and I can not heal those wounds as quickly," she motioned to her leg that was still badly damaged, but not nearly as bad as it had been in the tunnels. With her injuries earlier, given to her by Sheela she was able to heal almost instantly.

"I was a sign of change in the family. That something big would happen, and it was true. We were attacked because a village near by heard of the all white fox, my pelt would make good money. And then sins showed up with them. Ambushing us, and promising the men that in five years time I would be dead, and they could have my pelt." She limped over to the window and stared out at the sea that rocked the boat back and forth. "They sent my mother to those men shortly after she died, because she was a black fox. Another rarity in our community." Lifting up her delicate hand she touched the glass and put her head down, the tears would come now, she could not stop them. "I'm sorry..." she whispered to Skye, and to herself.

Skye wanted to help Aria, she just looked so upset...but he wasn't entirely sure what he could do for her. The years in the Camps had made it awkward for him to be near to anyone, let alone comfort them. But...he didn't feel quite as awkward around Aria...maybe it was because they had been through much the same things? He didn't know, but whatever it was, he found himself going over to her, and hesitantly putting his hand on her shoulder.
"It's...alright...It's okay to cry. I miss people as well, the ones who raised me...I miss them more than anything.", he said to her, and though he felt like he should be upset at this stage, the only emotion he found was a dull numbness. He was sad about it, sure, but it was an empty sadness. One that still hurt, but not as much as it had done before.

At first Aira didn't know how to take the arm around her shoulders. In a moment then she snapped, moving away from him. "I don't need your pity." She narrowed her eyes. "We've been through hell, you and I. But just because I helped you and you helped me does not mean we are the same at all." Her instinct was to move, and she did. She opened the door, almost running into Razer and was out on the deck in minutes.

While Skye was surprised at Aria's action, he understood that she wanted space. It was only natural, he shouldn't have touched her anyway.
"Yeah...We're not the same...I know that...", he muttered, even though Aria had already left. He didn't follow her. She needed some time by herself. As did he.

He heard Razer behind him, but ignored him, and returned to the bed. Slumping down on it, he put his head in his hands, which were leaning on his knees. he was getting a headache, a highly painful one at that, probably caused by exhaustion and general stress.

Razer stared at Skye for a moment, then turned around to find that Aria had gone up to the deck. His first thought was to go up and talk with her, but instead he thought speaking with the leopard first would give them a little time to mule over the events that had just taken place. "You should go after her..." he said softly, stepping into the room and staring at the leopard. "You've both been through a lot, and you are both hurt. Neither of you trust me enough, and women are difficult." He chuckled at the last part.

"She doesn't want comfort, but if you just let her run off like that she'll think that this... you grabbing her was an act..." The tiger took in a deep breath. "Just apologize and tell her that you are partners until you split ways on the mainland. That you both need at least one person to trust... for now."

"I suppose I'd better...", Skye reluctantly agreed, pushing himself off the bed. He had known he would have to talk to her anyway, he just hadn't wanted to. Even before the Camps, he had never been one for mushy stuff.

Still, there was no avoiding this. Passing Razer, he went up on deck, ignoring the stares from the (mostly) human crew. He should have expected that, Beast-kin weren't exactly a common sight nowadays, or so he assumed.
It made finding Aria easier though, as most of the crew gave her a wide berth.
"hey....", he began quietly when he approached, stopping next to her and leaning on the side of the ship. He had never been on a boat, except for when he was taken. He didn't feel sick or anything though, just intrigued by the way the ship seemed to work. If he could spend a bit more time here and learn...he stopped those thoughts before they could take a more solid form, he couldn't afford to think about things like that.
"Look...I'm sorry...about before. If I offended you in any way, I take it back. I know we're not the same. I just...I was trying to help..."

Razer watched Skye go, hoping that the two could patch what they had. It was not often that he saw two people of opposite beast kin get along, let alone escape an island together without more trouble than they had. It would be just awful if the two fought now, and their broken bond put them back on that dreadful island.

Up on the deck, many of the human men were staring at Aria. They were confused to see that she was up and walking, considering that when she arrived she had a nasty leg break. They were also intrigued by her beauty, which the sun played so well with. Her blond hair was even brighter, like the first fall of snow. Her honey eyes seemed to glisten, though they were filled with a fire that kept the men at bay. None of them knew she was a beast kin like their captain or the leopard for earlier, but they were willing to bet she had some magical ability, whether it was some form of animal or dark magic.

Their eyes turned to the leopard, just as the girl had jumped over the edge of the deck and sat herself on the railing. Soon he was at her side, leaning next to her, but far enough not to touch her. As if it had gotten him in trouble before. The girl was so lost in her thoughts that she did not notice the crew, or hear Skye approach her. Instead she was focusing completely on the beating of the waves and the salty mist in the air. She had only been on a boat once before, and it was spent at the bottom of the boat chained to many others who were frightened or sick. "Hmmm..." her voice hummed when she heard someone speak to her. At first she did not realize it was Skye until she heard the 'Look, I'm sorry..." and she turned her attention away from the natural world to the world of people.

"I'm sorry..." she said softly, knowing that it was not his fault. They both had been desocialized in those camps. They were not sure how to deal with others, it was a miracle that she even recalled that helping others was the right thing to do instead of letting them rot. "I'm not use to being touched. The only touch I know leads me down a path of pain. And I'm sorry for snapping." Her hands absently rubbed her shoulders, showing that right now she was feeling off about what she as saying. It was not often that she admitted that she was wrong. "We need to stay close... you're the only person I can trust right now..."

"S'okay...I know how you feel. Still...we have that in common, don't we?", Skye tried to sound lighthearted, but even cracking a smile was difficult for him. He had never really been one for showing his emotions, and the last five years hadn't helped.
"But you're right: we need to stay together, and we need to trust each other. At least enough to survive. I'm not asking you to be my friend or anything, just asking if I can be sure you won't, you know, try to kill me or anything.", he continued, staring out at the waves. He was still in the habit of avoiding eye contact with people, and he had a feeling it would take quite a while to break that habit.

Aria actually laughed. The man still wasn't sure if she was out to kill him or not. She swung both of her legs over the edge, only wincing a bit from the minor pain her right leg still had. "Do I really have to answer that?" her face had brightened up a bit to show that she found him rather amusing with his question. "If I were out to kill you, Skye, I would have done that by now. I'm a fox," her face was suddenly close to him, so close that some of the sailor's were staring in anticipation of a kiss. "We are stealthier and quicker than leopards. You would have been long dead by now if I meant you harm." Her voice was low and eerie as she said this before turning back around and facing the ocean. "Like I said. I trust you, whether you want to trust me or not is up to you."

"I know, I know. You could probably kill me before I even realised what was happening. There goes my attempt at a joke...", Skye said with a sigh, also staring out at the waves. For some reason, he couldn't take his eyes off them. Not just becuase they were pretty, but because it was something that was moving. Something he liked. He hated having to be still for any length of time. Always had.
"And...I do trust you. I just wanted you to know that.", he said softly, his eyes drifting over to Aria. Now he had a problem. Which did he find more pretty? The sea, or the fox-kin next to him?
Okay...why exactly am I thinking that?, he thought once he'd realised what had been going through his head, clearing the thoughts away with a shake of his head. He wanted to phase, then he wouldn't have to deal with things like that. But even though the crew had seen his other form, they didn't know that it was actually Skye, as they hadn't seen him as a human before now. Skye figured it wouldn't be a good idea to switch forms just now.

Aria's honey-gold eyes moved from the sea to the man next to her on the boat. She had never heard someone say that really trusted her other than the village that she once protected along side her brothers. A small smile formed on her lips and she thanked him with ease. Just as she was about to glide off the edge of the boat onto the deck, she heard a sound in the distance, it was faint, but it was familiar. "They know where we are..." she whispered, her voice shaken with fear that they had just endangered a boat of innocent men and women. "They found us..." her eyes turned to the horizon just as a large hovercraft in the air came their way from the island. She knew that Sheela had to be on that craft. "Skye... what do we do? She found us!"

At her shout, Razer was on the deck. He glanced over his men before he noticed the craft in the air floating after them. This was not good, he thought. It is never good when they send the hovercrafts after those who have escaped the clutches of the islands.

"Shit...", Skye muttered, also seeing the hovercraft. This was bad. Really very bad. Not just for them, but the people on the ship as well.
It was then that he made a decision. He didn't care what happened to him, as long as Aria got out of here.
Noticing Razer up on deck, he went ot him, roughly grabbing the Tiger's collar.
"I don't care what you have to do here. Get. Aria. Out.", he growled, emphasising each word. This guy had promised he'd help, now to see whether he meant what he said.

Razer's hands went to the tiger's grip pulling them away from his collar and pushing him. "I know..." he snarled, seeing that Aria had already swung over the side of the ship and was right behind Skye. It would take a lot to save them from the hovercraft, but it should be too bad. At least that is what he had hoped for. He took in a deep breath and quickly ordered his crew around, knowing they wouldn't be too excited about the situation, but they would listen anyway, for they had helped him out once before.

People began to move about the ship quickly, scattering around to work on their orders. The ship began to move quicker. Once he had everything done above the ship he ordered everyone under the deck. "Get Aria down below deck," he said quickly, once he finally had everyone in position. "Go to your room, lock the door and don't come out until I give you the okay." He pushed Skye toward the blonde headed fox and continued to shout orders to those still working about on the deck.
