Aethelstan became Earl of Lincoln when he murdered his father after becoming tired of waiting for the man to die. Despite this he was immediately put to use by the king of Mercia, sending him to fight against the Welsh. Aethelstan stood out as a ruthless commander, burning entire Welsh villages and slaughtering all he came across to force the Welsh armies to surrender. When he received a commander of a Welsh fort, he tortured him for three days before the eyes of the commander's men before burning him alive.
In an attempt to deal with the threat posed by Aethelstan, the king of Mercia married him off to the daughter of an Earl in East Anglia, but all it did was make his ambitions soar. Many times Aethelstan has tried to bully his way into positions of power at court, and has often rumbled about rebellion. Most recently he overheard another earl insulting him and in revenge destroyed the earl's entire holding, leaving nothing alive and razing the castle to the ground.
Now out of Mercia to let things cool down, he is on the look out for anything that can help him take power. The brewing war between Wessex and Mercia may allow him to realise his ambitions, if he chooses the right side.
