Mika

Sun shone through the thin white curtains covering the window, filling the rooms with light. Mika mumbled something under her breath and then rolled over, covering her head with her pillow. She never really had been a morning person, since she usually stayed up late at night, usually either flying or singing somewhere in the forest. Even so, she always woke up early.

Slowly, Mika rose from her bed and sat up, still half asleep. Everybody else is probably still be asleep... she thought as she stood up and grabbed a pair of clothes out of her dresser and changed. They probably aren't going to get up for a while, since I'm usually the one first awake. Mika grabbed the white brush lying on her desk and brushed her long light blonde hair. For some reason, today didn't feel right. It felt as if there was something watching her, watching her family. Mika knew that one day they would be ran out of their peaceful lives in the cabin, but she didn't know if it would be today, but there was a chance that it could be.

After getting ready, Mika walked out of her room and into the hallways of the cabin. She couldn't hear anybody else, so she decided that they were all asleep still. "I thought so..." she mumbled as she walked into the kitchen and flicked on the lights. On today, a year ago, it had been the day that the two scientists that had brought them here had died. Mika had told the others that they had just died, but they had really been killed by something, someone, that day. Mika hadn't wanted to worry them, so she just kept it a secret.
Mika grabbed an apple from the counter and took a bite out of it as she sat down at the table. It was always boring in the mornings until everybody else woke up, so Mika would usually just wait in the kitchen for everybody else. I wonder what the day has for us today... she thought as she rested her elbows on the table top and then put her head in her hands.

Tezuka

The creaking of the floorboards woke Tezuka from a deep slumber. He opened his eyes. Not that he could see anything, of course. He rolled over onto his side, sitting up. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to flatten it. He could hear the others breathing. Mika was awake, as usual, and Skylar and the kid were both asleep still. He sighed. He got up softly, not wanting to wake the kid up, and walked softly out into the hallway, yawning as he headed to the bathroom. He washed his face off, and then headed back down the hall to the kitchen.

"Morning, Mika..." He said softly. He felt uncomfortable. He felt like he was being watched. But he couldn't hear anything other than the occasional creak of the house and the others' breathing. And of course the kids' occasional murmer because of some dream he was having. He sat down, his white and red wings rustling sligthly.

Skylar

It was cold, so cold. There was no room left for her to stretch her wings, her legs, she felt trapped and alone. Everything around her was dark, the kind of pitch black that one would think could engulf you, and the darkness was getting closer and closer to her. But, before it did, suddenly she was looking up at strange faces covered with masks, their faces too hazy to make anyone out, all of them poking and prodding at her, mumbling things that she could not understand. Why was she here? It didn't make any sense. The needle came closer and closer to her until -

Skylar sat up abruptly, in what was a puddle of her own sweat. She crinkled her nose a bit, disgusted at herself, realizing that she had another nightmare. To greet her, the thoughts of the others, and the dreams of those dreaming. She smiled at the kiss of sunshine and saw that Mika and Tezuka were awake. "Goodmorning!" she said happily, all though with quite the groggy tone of voice. She walked around the cabin looking for a towel to wash her face, though it would have been best to hop in the shower. She walked into the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror, her eye looked tired, nightmares perhaps taking their toll. Her other eye covered in bandages as it had always been. She smiled at herself in the mirror as if the say goodmorning - to herself the and took of her bandage momentarily, revealing her red and blind eye, letting herself wash her face thoroughly. "That feels better." she smiled. Quickly she put the bandages back on and walked out of the bathroom, her black and red wings opening up freely behind her. Skylar unlike some of the group very much liked mornings, she liked the sunshine, though for no reason in particular.

She walked briskly into the kitchen, her purple nightgown, or what looked like a frilly shirt in length revealing her ever so skinny legs which were always covered in bandages. Most from the institute but some from other instances - Skylar was extremely fragile. "Hi Mika," she said smiling, walking up to the kitchen counter and hopping up upon it. Just after doing so she grabbed a green apple out of the fruit basket and took a bite. "Anything fun planned for today?" She yawned, the nights were becoming hard for her, she was having more frequent nightmares and flashbacks of the institute. As she looked at Mika she heard the murmur of her thoughts. "Mmm we can figure something out." she said with a grin. Just then she heard thoughts of another, a less familiar voice, it was faint but it was there. She looked around thinking it was one of the avians, and then looked out the window. For a moment she got goosebumps, but because it was mostly incoherent, she ignored it.

Edmund

It was starting to be lost by the wind, but the scent of them was still strong, and as they trekked through the snow, 'The closer the better." Edmund thought, as they had been tracking the mutants for a while, and Edmund didn't have much patience. He knew everything about the mutants, and apparantly one of them could read minds, so he tried to clear his head of thoughts. It was quite hard though, as the further they went, which was (He checked his compass) north-west, the colder it got. Edmund climbed up a nearby tree, and at the top he could see a log cabin, not so far away.

He jumped down and turned to the others. "We're close, we're very close." He then turned back and continued walking towards the mutants.

Yukio

Yukio looked around at the other hunters, blue eyes scanning each one, looking at their face, watching their body language, listening to their breathing and the patter of their hearts, or was that just his? For the first time since he was a youngling, he was scared. Not for himself, but for the ones he loves. His heart belonged to Mika, the mutant whom he was borne to be with, though he also ached for Kayla, the one he spent the years protecting, training, and caring for. He couldn't possibly kill Mika, but the mutant he wanted to kill most was the one whom Kayla had feelings for as well.
He frowned, something he'd been doing a lot as of lately, this was much too complicated. Why was he being sent to kill the ones whom were successful? Just because they ran away? Why not capture them and bring them back? Why not treat them the way he was treated all of his life? Then, they'd surely want to stay back with the scientist, wouldn't they?
Yukio walked without speaking one word, the quiet seemed almost as loud as if someone were screaming at him, an odd feeling, indeed.
"We're close, we're very close."
Edmund's words shattered the loud silence and Yukio found his heart thudding faster than ever. He was the leader, yet he was probably the most terrified out of all of them. He chewed on the inside of his cheek and thought, if he could just warn the mutants, they'd be safe, at least for now.
Then, he figured it out, there was a mutant there who could read minds, if his mind screamed out loud enough, he could warn them, and they'd probably be able to escape just in time. He cleared his mind of all thoughts and focused on two simple words, emphasizing them with all of his heart, making them explode in his head louder than loud. 'Run! Now!'

Kayla

Kayla walked through the snow, her movements fluid and efficient. To the others she knew she would appear calm, confident and in control and completely prepared for what was coming. She needed them to see her as strong and confident but way down in the centre of her being she wanted to weep. Finally what she longed for so long had happened, she was outside and no longer in the institute. She had wished for her freedom for a very long time and had always felt that she would pay any price to gain it but she had discovered the price was too high. She was free because a task needed doing, an unpleasant and violent task one that she was perfectly suited to and had been made for. Perhaps if things had worked out correctly then she would have no qualms about the task ahead but things had become complicated. And she had no idea how to uncomplicate them.
She glanced at Yukio and with her heightened senses could hear his heart pounding, he wanted to do this as little as she did yet neither felt as though they had a choice. She was closer to Yukio than any of the other hunters and the thought of him not being beside her made her feel physically ill and yet their loyalities had begun to split. She feared they would end up on different sides and yet conversely feared what would happen if they didn't.

With a sigh and a slight shake of her head she pushed her thoughts aside and focussed on their surroundings and where they were ultimately heading. She would decide how she would deal with the situation once she got there as all of her fears and worries would not make things any different. She heard Edmund climbing the tree and waited for him to catch their quarry's trail. She might have exceptional senses including smell but Edmund was unique in his ability to track those they sought. She nodded when he said they were close and walked a little faster wanting to end the anticipation of what was to come. She walked beside Yukio and frowned at him, he was acting a little strangely and she was concerned for him, she touched his shoulder lightly a question in her eyes.

Angelique

Edmund suddenly climbed up the tree, and she was really good at that. The next second she was climbing next to him, and they tracked the mutants. She wasn't really afraid of heights. And she loves the snow. So this is the perfect time for her to attack or kill someone. Angelique looked at the other hunters. They all seemed so prepared. Well, except for Yukio, who seemed to be distracted by something she doesn't know.

Edmund jumped down and turned to the others. "We're close, we're very close." He then turned back and continued walking towards the mutants. Angelique was broken out of her reverie because of that. She was suddenly very aware of her surroundings. She jumped down and landed gracefully, like she always do. Angelique can feel that Yukio was nervous about something. And Kayla was also worried about him.

" We have to get closer to them as possible " Angelique said to Edmund.

Mika

Mika watched as Skylar and Tezuka came out into the kitchen. It was obvious that they both felt like they were also being watched, and were both uneasy. She smiled reassuringly at both of them, not wanting them to worry too much, and then spoke. "Morning." she said and then finished her red apple. "Something isn't right today, I want you guys to be on the alert." She got up and then threw the apple core into the trash and then noticed that Cabel was still asleep.

"Cabel still asleep?" Mika said as she looked around. "Someone should wake him up soon. Don't want him to sleep forever." Mika then walked over to the door, passing by Skylar on the way and ruffling her hair. Lately, Mika could tell that she had been having nightmares of the Institute a bunch of times. Mika didn't want Skylar to be worrying about being taken back to the Institute. She knew that one day it wood happen, but they should at least enjoy the time before they would be brought back. After the scientists were killed, it was assured that the Institute was trying to get them back, or maybe even trying to kill them too.

After thinking about all of this, Mika was overwhelmed. She had to protect her family, also while fighting for her own life. "I'm going on a walk." Mika mumbled and then headed out of the door and out of the safety of the cabin. Who knows what could be hidden in the forest? Anything could, but they would have to get past Mika before they got to her family.
While Mika was walking along the grass of the forest floor, she starting to quietly sing a tune that her mother used to sing to her to calm her down a lot. Mika never, ever, sang around anybody else. She didn't know why, but she just didn't. It was a habit of hers.

Cabel

Cabel twitched in his sleep, eyes squeezed shut not only as a blockade from the sun, but as an attempted shield against the nightmare that was going on in his mind. A moment later he shot up in his bed, eyes wide open and his white hair splayed across his face. Shaking the nightmare away, he got out of bed and threw a blanket on top of it, since the gray polyester had slid off during the night. He quickly dressed in a pair of dark blue jeans and a black and white striped shirt as well as his usual black Converse. Heading to the bathroom, he brushed his teeth and hair; 'styling' his white locks by running his fingers through them and pushing them out of his face until it looked moderately decent. It was becoming increasingly obvious that the pale boy needed a haircut, though when asked about it he claimed otherwise.
With a sigh, he headed out toward the kitchen and murmured greetings to the others, though he otherwise seemed to ignore them. He headed to the pantry and began to rifle through, searching for something extremely filling. A moment later he closed the pantry and turned to the bowl of fruit on the counter and resigned himself to eat one of the apples therein.
Freezing momentarily as his hand brushed the edge of the fruit basket, Cabe nearly dropped the apple as his mind was thrust back to when his 'parents' (the scientists that broke him and the others out) died. To anyone observing him, Cabe was just standing there, holding an apple in an outstretched hand, eyes unfocused, for about five seconds. After that period of time, the white haired boy blinked and pulled his hand back, realizing that it probably looked weird that he had just been standing there, doing nothing for an unusually long period of time. Blushing lightly, he turned and went to sit at the table, taking his time to walk over there so that his cheeks were cooled by the time he sat down.

Tezuka

Tezuka's eyes shifted to Cabel's direction. He waited for a while before speaking at all. He had heard Skylar's shallow breathing and rapid heart-beat when she had still been asleep, as well as Cabel's sharp intake of breath only a few seconds before. He sighed. "You know you two don't have to keep worries to yourself." Without waiting for either of them to answer, he tunred and faced Skylar. "Angel, I know you had another nightmare. It's not good to keep those things bottled up...I know that from personal experience." He then shifted and turned to Cabel. "And you, Kid...just saw something. I know you both have heard this from me a thousand times, and I'll say it again. You can talk to us. We're a family. We're here for each other." He stopped. He didn't expect much of an answer from either of them.

He sighed again, placing a hand on his left shoulder. It's still out of place... He thought. And here he was, lecturing those two about telling him and Mika things, and he wouldn't tell any of them that at the moment, he couldn't fly.

It had been a stupid mistake. The wind had been blwoing all day, so it was bound to affect his sonar, he knew that. But he had been so preoccupied with his thoughts...he hadn't noticed that he was flying too close to a tree. His left shoulder and wing had crashed into it, causing him to fall. Luckily he hadn't been very high up, and only fell about twenty feet. The hollow bones in his wing had crunched with a very disgusting sound, and he had just lain there, dazed, for well over an hour. When he had gotten up to inspect the damage, it hadn't been pretty. The wing was alright, it didn't look that bad and would heal soon. His arm and shoulder, however, were a different matter. Hehad shoved his elbow back in lace with a loud snap, but his shoulder...there wasn't much he could do.

He walked home that afternoon.

Edmund

Edmund was about to answer when he heard (and smelled) one of the mutants coming their way. He quickly signed 'Hide! and ran up one of the trees and blended in with the leaves, keeping one eye focused on whoever was coming. What if it was the one who could read minds and she had read his as they came? Then he would have totally screwed everything up for all of his fellow hunters. He (silently) breathed a sigh of relief as he saw who it was, The second mutant, aka Mika. Edmund slowly turned his head, frantically trying to think of the best thing to do.

Cabel

Cabel glanced up at Tezuka when he spoke.

Shaking his head, he sighed. "It's my burden to bear, not yours." he bit into his apple, removing a large chunk of the green fruit.
Biting his lip, Cabe thought for a moment before his green gaze returned to Tezuka. "I... Suppose I could tell you a little." he hesitated. "I saw them. The scientists." he had never really come to calling the scientists that got them out their parents.
"I've actually been seeing them a lot lately. How they died." Immediately he regretted saying it in front of Skylar. He secretly hoped his words wouldn't affect the girl.

Silently, he watched and listened for Tezuka's reaction, but prayed to a deity he'd hardly heard of that the matter would be dropped, though he knew that it likely wouldn't be.

Tezuka

Tezuka's eyes narrowed when Cabel mentioned the Scientists, but he could tell by the boy's tone of voice and breathing patterns that he didn't want to talk about it. So instead, he opted to say something else. "Kid...one thing you need to understand. We're a family. If it's your burdern, it's ours. You don't have to face it alone. Think about that next time."

He turned to the wall in front of him, thinking. He couldn't be sure, but he still felt as if the cabin was being watched. And Mika leaving had made him uneasy. But, he knew that she could take care of herself if she needed to.

Kayla

Kayla was still waiting on an answer from Yukio when she heard footsteps ahead, with her increased senses she had more warning than the others would have had with the exception of Edmund. She was about to warn the others when she heard Edmund's whispered words of warning. She was not worried about being seen as she was confident that she could move quick enough to be well hidden in time. She tapped Yukio on the arm and pointed at a nearby tree indicating that it was a suitable hiding spot. Then she quickly and easily scaled the tree and knelt on one of its branches masked by the foliage. Luckily it was an evergreen and had not shed its leaves at the onset of autumn. She crouched calmly on the branch keeping her breathing low and steady as she did not know how strong the hearing was of whatever approached.

She guessed it was one of their quarry as if it had been an animal or even a human then Edmund would have been more likely to take it out quickly and quietly. But as they had no idea which mutant was approaching they had to be careful so as not to alert the others. Kayla tensed ready to pounce the moment the opportunity presented itself. She would not act rashly but she always believed in being prepared and she would not be caught off guard by the mutant.
