...always an outsider. A lone wolf and an alpha find comfort in one another. [Looking for a partner]

Introduction

Image

She is a former Alpha, made Omega when taken hostage by another pack. Even after she escaped, her pack did not accept her back. Now she is a lone wolf. Unwilling to join any pack that invites her, and fights the packs that try and take her without asking.

He is an Alpha, confident and arrogant and respected. The position was handed down from him when his father retired, but he is as respected as if he hadn't had the title given to him. She wanders onto his land, and is taken in by the wolves doing perimeter.

He offers her a home, she denies. He isn't used to getting told no. So he proposes an agreement, she sticks around for awhile, and if she likes it- she stays. If not, she has to leave the region all together.

They find comfort in one another. He doesn't treat her like a washed up Alpha, useless. She doesn't treat him like a god, ignores his title and talks to him like a normal human being.

The most shameful thing that could happen to an Alpha had happened to her. She hadn't been prepared for an attack, and it almost caused the death of every one of her pack members. That was rough, considering there were now far and few packs, the Valley Pack had been one of the largest because almost the whole entire town was filled with wolves. None of the wolves had actually died though, but she had to offer up herself to be taken as prisoner to avoid such. It took a long time for her to escape from them, but they never broke her spirit. What did was when she returned and they had replaced her, and shunned her completely.

Now she just traveled, going wherever the land seemed to bring her. Very hippie-like, actually. Though after losing her pack like that, she hadn't been entirely too crazy to find a new home, and she doubted she could join another pack. The first pack she had run into was six months after she lost hers, and they respected her decision to stay a lone-wolf, as long as she got off their land within a few days. The next, a few months after that, had been composed of mostly males and decided she was going to go along with them whether she wanted to or not. That time she fought for her freedom, and spent weeks running from them.

A year had passed since she left, and somehow or another she ended up in Pennsylvania, the opposite side of the country from where she was from. She could smell other wolves in the woods clearly, they must have taken their home here, but she found she cared little. If they actually found her, she could escape, she was sure of it. Dropping down underneath a large tree, she kept her ears open and listening as she closed her eyes, planning on resting a little bit before moving on.

James had been with the cubs, teaching them the basics of how to shift forms consciously and how to move about and get used to their forms, when a sentry burst through the edge of the clearing, shifting into his human form as he went. "Hey Black, we have some bitch wandering through our territory," he reported.

"Is she hostile Red?" he questioned going into alpha mode.

"No, in fact she seems to be malnourished," Red answered a bit confused.

"Well why didn't you invite her over then?" Black answered, turning to the cubs, who'd shifted back to human form and smiled apologetically at them, "Sorry cubs, but I am going to have to cut this short so that I can take care of something."

Ignoring the protests of the cubs, he shifted into his wolf form, signaling for Red to lead the way, which he promptly did and they were in the area within half an hour. Leaving thoughts of how she'd gotten so deep in his territory before being caught for later, he returned to his human form signaling his pack-mate to hang back as he circled around before he gave away his position by standing straight up. "Alright, show yourself, I know you're there!" he called out.

Lights didn't eat much anymore. Before she hadn't either, choosing to let her pack eat before her and even when she was a human- which she rarely was -she only ate healthy foods. So now on the run and all alone, she really didn't eat much at all. Actually her diet was down to maybe a rabbit or two a week, if she was lucky. Her ribs poked out at her coat almost painfully, but her thick coat mostly hid it. Maybe she would have changed into her human form if she had money, then she could have gone into some McDonald's and choked down a burger and some fries, but she didn't have any cash with her. All she really had was the pair of clothes she had on when she left, and her wolf-pendant.

She also hadn't shifted out of her wolf form since she left. Now, she wasn't even sure if she remembered how. It was amazing she still had her wits about her, the wolf should have taken over by now, it had certainly had it's chances. She supposed the next time she had to be human, she wouldn't know what to do with herself. Everything would be so different, less. The wolfs hearing and sight was so much better than her human forms.

Awhile later she was awoken by the sound of two wolves approaching, and she crawled into some bushes and hid, watching for them to appear and pass so she could get out of there. Though she didn't know that they already knew she was there, and were coming for her. When a human voice called out for her to show herself, she quickly went over her options. Making a run for it was her first thought, but there were two of them and one of her- a very tired, weak her. That was out of the question. And they knew she was there so she couldn't stay hiding, and that left one option. Grunting, she pulled her red and brown body off the ground, leaving her hiding place and stepping into the clearing.

James eyed the wolf before him, critically taking in her appearance and gait. She looked as though she would turn tail and bolt at any second and hungry. It was obvious that something had happened, either she'd been exiled from her pack or her pack had been slaughtered, since no pack would allow one of their own to go hungry and there had been plenty of game the past few seasons if regular food wasn't enough. However, he was relatively new to being the alpha and had yet to come across a lone wolf before; not really knowing what else to do he shrugged away his inexperience and just barreled his way through the situation, going with the flow. "I am James Black, Alpha of the Penn Woods Pack. Who are you?" he challenged and at the same time, exerting his dominance.

Lights stood tall, proud even in her current state of appearance. She knew she didn't look good, she looked sickly and weak, but she held herself in a way that still made her look strong. The man introduced himself as an Alpha, which made her even more tense. Ever since being, well, kicked out of her pack she had been wary of all wolves, but Alpha's especially. Most of them didn't like other Alpha's, too much power in another wolf, and they usually liked ex-Alpha's even less.

Within a few seconds she had shifted back into her human form, unable to talk as a wolf and not wanting to be attacked. A short(4'9" ft) and skinny black haired girl stood before him then, giving him a wary yet defiant look. "Lights, former Alpha of the Valley Pack." She answered, voice rough from disuse.

He raised an eyebrow at the rough sound of her voice, and was further intrigued by how she'd introduced herself. "Former Alpha" she had said, something must have wiped out the pack then. Even so, despite all of this there was still a fire in her, her spirit had not yet been broken, she was strong and every bit an alpha. This woman could make quite the contribution to the pack, but first he would have to see how everyone reacted to her presence. Having made his decision, James flicked his wrist slightly, signaling for Red to go back to his patrols, which he did at once before he turned his back on the woman and started walking back towards the town. "Well first things first Lights, since you're already here why don't we get you fed," James declares, then throws over his shoulder, "and don't even think about running off, in your current condition you wouldn'tmake it far before I caught up to you."

You could tell that the female was listening to the other party walk away, the one still in wolf form, by the way her face was tilted slightly. Once again she was reminded of the downfalls of being in this form, even if some things were easier, she hated feeling so vulnerable. It was like being a child again, not being able to see and hear as clearly as an adult could. It didn't help that she didn't have her glasses either, but she hadn't brought them with her when she left.

Lights didn't move from her spot, watching the Alpha male start to walk off. "I don't take charity!" She called up to him, her stubbornness clear in her voice, the way she spoke. It wasn't disrespectful, she wouldn't be disrespectful to another Alpha since she expected them to respect her, but she had made up her mind. "And I'm not joining your pack either, so you can stop with the pity-act and get on with the chasing the loner off your land."

"Charity? Pity act? Running you off? Where the hell do you get these ideas? If we were going to do any of that why would the sentry come for me instead of my beta or better yet chasing you out themselves??" he spun around on his feet to look back at her, he was intrigued as to where she'd gotten these ideas but even more so at the fact that she'd so vehemently denied him. For as long as he'd lived, he'd never been denied anything from anyone except for his parents and even then not all that often.

Suddenly it dawned on him that he'd made a grievous misstep in blatantly pointing out her weakness. James knew that the other alpha would take even greater insult if he continued pointing out her obviously weakened condition more than he already had, but he also knew that she needed a decent meal and good night's rest. Without really thinking about it, he blurted out the first thing that came to mind, "Anyway, whoever said that it would be free? You can have a room and food for as long as you contribute to the pack, like teaching the cubs to hunt and shift for instance, in the end you will be free to leave whenever you wish, but if you do then you must leave this region altogether. What do you say Lights?"

He knew that this was a hastily made decision, but he wanted a chance to see what she would do. Besides the terms were in her favor, there was no reason for her to turn him down if she wanted to survive.

Lights frowned, immensely disliking the idea but finding sense in what he said. Besides, she really did need a good meal, and if he was offering who was she to turn him down? It wasn't like she had to stick around for long, she could escape tonight if she wanted- after getting some rest and a bit of food in her empty stomach. Still, she hated the idea of accepting anything from him, even if he claimed she would be 'repaying' him for it. So as much as she hated to admit it, which was a lot, he was sort of right. Though she still didn't like the Alpha, especially after he had so obviously pointed out how weak she was at the moment. They knew nothing about her past, and it was actually rather better that way, in her mind anyways. If they knew, they would probably just throw her out like her old pack did. Though she was sort of surprised he didn't know, the Valley Pack was one of the largest in America.

Instead of admitting that he was right though, she just gave a short nod and started towards him. "Don't expect me to stick around long." She warned, deciding that she would never be in a pack again unless she was Alpha. It was impossible to go from being the top of the pack to the middle, or the bottom. "And I don't need a room, I can sleep out in the woods in my wolf form."

He couldn't explain why but it felt good earning someone's approval even if it was reluctent and not a hundred percent. So it was no wonder that he smiled at her as he waited for her to catch up and let her set their pace, not wanting to push her to go faster than she could and not minding having to walk slower, as he led the way. The whole time they walked he chattered about the pack wanting her to how things worked and trying to 'subtly' get her to accept them. He didn't know how well that worked since subtlety wasn't his strong suit. Still, he told her about how well everyone worked together, his hunting exploits, how the cubs were coming along under his supervision, though they were not as far as they should but he thought that he was doing okay considering that it was his first time. They were almost there when he remembered something that he should've thought of earlier, causing him to stop and fall silent for a few minutes. "Are you sure that you want to sleep outside? I heard that it is suppose to rain pretty hard tonight..." James trailed off, giving her a look of concern before turning back towards the borders where the sentries were. He never liked the fact that some of his pack-mates were forced to tough out the snow and rain as they patrolled, but it was necessary. It wouldn't do to have an enemy suddenly attack just because they'd grown lax on security.

Lights honestly just tried to ignore the Alpha beside her, having already made up her mind on what she was going to do. Maybe hang around a few days, a week at the latest, and then she would be out. She couldn't help but listen though, taking in the information and siding it with her own pack, figuring out their similarities and differences. One of the big ones was how the cubs were being trained, his didn't seem to be as far as they should have been by this time, and her's would have been much farther ahead than where they should have been now. She was always pretty good at training them, but she had her Beta help. He seemed to have more of an influence with them, maybe because he was a guy.

She debated ignoring his question later, hating to repeat herself, but ended up nodding. "I sleep in my wolf form." And rooms were for people, she added in her head. Rain, snow, heat, cold, it didn't matter. She had slept in her wolf form since leaving, had been in it since leaving. Even before though, she always worked the perimeter at night, so she often slept out there anyways. Very rarely would they be able to convince her to take the night off, she felt safer being the one to watch the grounds. It was one of those nights that convinced her not to that the enemy slipped in. "I always have." Lights added.

He didn't like it, but he didn't really have any authority over her as long as she didn't do anything to harm the pack. "Alright... but if you get sick, you're coming inside until you're well again," he thought that he was being fair, demanding that she stay indoors when she became ill instead of forcing her to either tough it out or come asking later on, it gave her an out. After saying his piece he led her into town where people greeted and he nodded back in return. He was tackled once by his beta Kal and they joked around a bit, talking sports before he left to go check up on his mate who was with her first litter. Soon after that he'd made it to his home and he led her to the kitchen. "Feel free to anything you want, I'm going to be in my study just down the hall if you need anything else," James informed her and with that left her to her own devices as he went to his study to pull out maps of the borders, trying to figure out where the holes in their security were. If one lone wolf was able to break through for who knew how long, then would a pack be able to do the same? It was troubling, and he wanted this resolved as quickly as possible, the safety of the pack was on his shoulders now.

Lights didn't say anything for the rest of the walk back, deciding that her silence could be taken as a truce and somewhat of an agreement to his earlier statement, about her having to sleep in the house if she got sick. Fortunately, she didn't plan on staying long enough to get sick, and she would keep telling herself that and reminding him of it so that she wouldn't forget. The latest she would stay was a month, maybe. And she should make sure that she was paying for her stay, so she could not be assumed part of the pack.

Once they got to the house and he left her to go to his study, she wasn't really quite sure what to do. At first she just wandered around, then took up refuge in the living room, but did not turn the TV on so as not to bother him. It didn't take long for her to get bored though, and she wandered to the kitchen and went through the cabinets and drawers, a total invasion of privacy but she didn't have anything else to do.

Fifteen minutes later and she was knocking lightly on the door to James study, then entering with a plate full of omelet and a glass of water. She placed it away from the papers on his desk, then stood back looking a little sheepish, totally unusual for her. "I got bored, and that's the only thing I know how to make." Lights was a terrible cook, burnt water most of the time. "What are you looking at?" No respect for privacy, again, she leaned forward to see the papers on his desk and made the connection with the map and her being found on the land, and then leaned back with a little smirk. "If you're wondering how I got in without you noticing, check the eastern border. There's some thick trees in the area, and some low branches that make it really easy to sneak in overhead if you know how to climb."

James wasn't making any headway with the charts and he was about to give up and just go take a look at the borders himself when Lights came in with an omelet and a glass of water. He leaned in his chair and ran his hands through his hair to release some of his stress as he allowed her to take a look at the maps. Though when he saw the smirk as she leaned back to look at him, he knew he wouldn't like what she had to say and when she spoke he hung his head and let out a sigh when he discovered that he was right. "Those low branches also make for a good ambush, we've known about them for years now. Looks like we let them grow over too much, I'll have to have someone cut a few of them down and in a way that looks natural. Man this is such a drag..." he complained as he drew a hand through his hair again before looking back up at her with a grin giving a small glance at the food, "Thanks for that, I would've had to go all the way back there to scout out the place myself otherwise. Have you already eaten?"

Lights enjoyed being right. It wasn't in a way that she liked to brag though, she just enjoyed the self-satisfaction of being smarter than someone else, or finding something that they missed. Granted, this time the only reason she knew the right answer was because she was the one who had used it as a means of sneaking in, but it was still the same thing in a way. It was especially nice to be right now, or at least be able to help, since he was an Alpha and she.. wasn't anymore. Even if she still introduced herself as a former-Alpha. It would just help her if he knew she still had those Alpha-traits and the mindspace of it.

Without thinking, she answered his question with a nod. "I made two, I just wanted to bring this in to you before it got cold." She was used to not eating a lot, and having an omelet would probably make her sick with the sudden change in diet. Suddenly she was very aware of her dirty appearance, the way her clothes hung off of her from the lack of weight, her hair was tangled. "Could I use your shower? And, um, maybe borrow a shirt until I can get my own?" His would be big on her, but the shirt would at least stay on. She would have to deal with her own jeans though.

"Sure, follow me," he instructed absently as he grabbed the plate and began eating as he walked to his room. When he got there he placed it down on a dresser and opened up a drawer and pulled out a black t-shirt and a pair of grey draw-string sweats then handed them to her before then leading her to the bathroom that was between his bedroom and the second one, taking a fresh towel from closet opposite while he was at it. James handed Lights the items and opened the door for her, "Take as long as you need, I will be right back I have to take care of a few things."

Lights followed after James quietly, waiting outside his room when he went in. After he handed her the clothes, she let him lead her down the hall and tried to map out the house in her mind, not wanting to ask directions anywhere more than once and seem silly, or like she just didn't pay attention. "Thanks." She managed to mumble out before he left, not wanting to seem rude since he was being kind to her. Slipping into the bathroom, she took a moment to figure out the shower then stripped and got in to a luke-warm shower.

Less than fifteen minutes later she got out and dried off before pulling the clothes on. Even with the drawstring waist, the pants were still a little big, but after rolling them a few times they looked okay. There was nothing to help with the shirt though, and she looked like she was swimming in it, but it was comfortable. She only needed to run her fingers through her black hair for it to look alright, and she balled her clothes up in her arms before turning off the light and leaving the bathroom.

After the door had closed James went back to his room to quickly finish the omelet then left to go look for Trixie who was working at the local garage. Her family owned a small nursery, but she was more interested in autos than flowers. He himself avoided the nursery like a plague since every time he entered people seemed to think that he was buying something for some girl, when all he wanted to do was speak to the owners to see how their business was doing. "Hey Trixie!" James shouted as he entered the garage.

"What's up Jimmy!" she called back as she rolled out from under a car and grabbed a rag cleaning her hands of grease, "What can I do for you?"

"I need you to ask your parents to check out the eastern border for me tomorrow. The branches have grown over to the point where they put us at risk. I just need them to trim them down some but do it in a way that looks natural," he requested.

"Sure thing, and in return how about a date?" she tried to bargain as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

"How about you do as I say and you find another date, I'm busy right now," he smiled, but his tone had a warning in it.

Knowing not to push her luck, she let him brush her off with a pout. "Does it have anything to do with that girl that Kal came in chattering about earlier? From what I heard she isn't anything special, did she get lost in the woods when she went camping with her folks or something?" she asked.

"No, she's a lone wolf named Lights, she's going to be staying here for a while doing odd jobs here and there until she decides to leave. Tell that to anyone who asks and send word if your parents need someone to watch the store tomorrow while they are out," James informed her as he left and returned home, going back into his study, cleaning up the maps and putting them in their proper place then turned on his computer and began writing a log of that day.

Everything had gone so fast when the ambush had happened. She always read in books that you were in an accident, or danger even, that everything slowed down and you felt and saw everything to the littlest detail. That didn't prepare her at all for the attack. They had come at night, and like usual she was already in her wolf form, dozing in the middle of camp. Like James, they had a little town where her pack mostly occupied, but they also had a group of cabins in the middle of the woods that the soldiers and hunters mostly stayed in- that's where she was. For once she had taken off, her Beta informing her that she looked like she was about to fall over and pass out and should get some rest. Normally she probably would have ignored any wolf that told her that, but her Beta wasn't just another wolf, he was her long-term boyfriend. Instead he took her spot running perimeter, along with the other two wolves on duty. All three were dead within the first five minutes of the fight- they had to be the first to be taken down.

Lights had actually gotten to watch her Beta be taken down, he was the only one that made it back to the cabins to alert them. A enemy wolf took him down in the middle of the cabins though, and soon after both Lights and a hunter had attacked and killed the brown wolf. It didn't take long for them to realize they were outnumbered, and they gave over what the enemy pack had come looking for- The Alpha.

She woke up when she heard the front door open, scolding herself for accidentally falling asleep- and on the couch for that matter. Carding her fingers through her hair, she made herself not be embarrassed by her current appearance in the too-big clothes and made her way towards the study. Peeking her head in, she waited until James looked up to speak. "I'm goin' to head out, alright?" She still didn't want to sleep inside, not wanting to bother him more than she had.

"Alright," he said absently as he finished typing a sentence then looked up giving her his full attention. "Just so you know the door is never locked so you are welcome to come in and out whenever you want and take whatever you need. If anyone asks why you are here you can either direct them to me or handle it yourself, whatever you want. Oh, and before I forget I need you to be up early tomorrow, the Donaldson's are going to fix that branch problem and they might need someone to watch the nursery for them. If they do, I'll ask that they bring some of Trixie's clothes, they'll fit you better until we can get you some of your own. I think that was everything, do you have any questions, Lights?" James asked, he wanted to confine her to the order of the pack, but as he already knew that wouldn't go over well with her so he had to do things so that she had the freedom to choose, yet still give her odd jobs around the pack as per their earlier agreement. This was going to be nearly impossible to balance for him and he knew that he was going to slip up sooner or later, it was already giving him a headache, both the balancing act and the argument that was sure to come when he failed.

Lights managed to keep her annoyance to just a frown. A nursery? She had little to no idea how to deal with plants, it was just like the cooking thing- everything she touched died. Even as a young girl, she had never been interested in those sorts of things. Planting and cooking, arts and crafts. The only thing she had been concerned about after she had her first change was training to become a solider. At thirteen, her wish was finally granted and she was promoted from Hunter to Soldier, and from then on she made her way up until they finally decided that she deserved to be the Alpha. It had been unanimous, they all thought she had worked hard enough and showed the potential to be an excellent leader- and she had been. In the end, she had given herself up to almost certain death so that her pack would remain safe. When she returned to them though, they acted like she had made the wrong decision, and she hadn't even questioned that then.

"How am I supposed to watch a nursery?" She asked without thinking, then felt foolish for letting her thoughts escape. "I mean, as long as someone else is there I guess it'll be fine." This Trixie-thing didn't sound the most pleasant though. Suddenly the sound of rain was loud inside the house, and she sighed loudly in defeat. "Would you mind if I crashed on the couch after all?"

An amused grin made its way onto his features as he thought about the Donaldson's, they really were an odd family. The girls grew up wanting to be one of the guys and the boys grew up to be sensitive and caring, it was a wonder that the men ever found a mate to continue the line. However, without fail, every time the male came of age he would find a mate, which he supposed was a good thing considering that no one knew plants like they did and were the pack's medicine men.

"Don't worry about that, you'll be helping Sid out, he's Trixie's kid brother. He might only be eight, but don't let his age fool you, he knows his stuff, he just can't reach the top shelf and some of the higher plants yet. Trixie can't be there because she works down at the garage," he explained, then as if on cue the rain started to pour and he had to hide his amusement as Lights conceded to sleeping indoors. "Uh, sure, no problem, I'd offer you the spare bedroom instead if I thought you'd take it.." James trailed off realizing that he was rambling and instead focused on the matter at hand, "Anyway there are spare blankets in the hallway closet, feel free to use one. I just need to finish a few things here before I go to sleep myself. Did you have any other questions?"
