Ryan retrieved a wooden sword. Saying nothing, he quickly replicated Matt's stance. "I guess I do."
He looked to Matt, grinning, and weighed the sword in his hand. Not light, not too heavy. He'd prefer something a bit shorter, that he'd have more control over. But it would do.

..::..

Riona did not anwer him, so he assumed that she did not need anything more. But she did ask a question..
Of course. He did not see which of his workers she was talking about.. but it wasn't important, so he looked back to the crafting of her weapon. It was going well, albeit slowly. Caythas worked the slowest of all his metal-crafters, but it made his work much sturdier and beautiful.

..::..

Tasarin backed out of the small corner, passing by Gaiamat and the gnome. He dipped his head in thanks to the gnome healer.
Denna would need the rest.. if she denied it, he would insist anyways. Tasarin himself was tired, but he wouldn't rest until he knew everyone was .. physically and mentally ..safe for sure.

..::..

Cedare dipped her head down to retrieve another item, this one less colorful. It was dark green, a shade darker than her own.
As she held it down with her forepaw and tugged upward with her jaws, her ears swiveled to the direction of Ashwise. He was talking to one of the little people that walked through walls. Even shorter than Denna..
Their conversation meant nothing to her. But how he spoke.. it was almost sad.

She let go of the tough material. Cedare's small leathery wings spread and she dropped down from the nest and landed.
She looked in his eyes and sat directly in front of him.

Mathias grinned and swung his sword in a downward motion, going for Ryan's head. he was moving slowly, so Ryan would be able to block with little trouble. it was the same way Mathias had been taught. he had been taught through action, not words. of course, he would still explain as he moved.
"make sure to watch the motion i use, and block accordingly, you want to put your sword up above your head to keep from getting it cut off." he noted. he wasn't the best at explaining, but he could show him. he stepped backwards quickly and showed him the proper blocking motion. "any Questions?"

.....

Denna thanked the gnome healer for the pillow and the vial. she drank the medication down and relaxed lightly. she then looked up at Gaiamat and smiled lightly. "thank you, a full sized bed would be much nicer." she rubbed her eyes and followed Tasarin. Denna felt like she was falling asleep on her feet. she could feel the elixir kicking in and was grateful for it. the pain her arm was quickly fading. she smiled softly and had to force her eyes to stay open.

Flynn grinned up at the female dragon that stood before him. Somnium was now fully grown and ready for her first flight bearing a rider. she bowed her head and lowered her body so Flynn could climb onto her back. he did and ran his hands over her scales. she had grown into a beautiful young dragon, her scales reflecting that she had become a full fledged nightmare dragon, leaving any hints of her dream self behind.

Somnium launched off the ground and flew into the clouds twisting and spinning as she did so. she was sure Flynn would be able to hold on, and she knew he was safe as long she could still feel the weight of him on her back. she could hear her rider laughing from her back and smirked. she went into a strait nosedive, the ground coming up quick below them. Somnium had to test her rider. she knew he was the best rider for her, but it was part of her race to test a rider.
just before it was too late Somnium pulled out of the nose dive and flew level to the ground. the excitement of Flynn on her back was rolling through her as well. though they had never flown before they had a strong dragon/rider bond.

after a few hours of flight Somnium and Flynn returned to their cave to rest and prepare for the next day. now that Somnium was full grown Flynn was going to seek his revenge on the dark haired girl. he still had spots of metal embedded in skin and planned to return the favor to the girl.

.........

Matty leaned against a wall polishing his sword. he had stayed behind to teach Ryan the art of sword fighting but he planned to meet back up with his sister later on. he had understood that she and her dragon would want to leave, since it was Gaiamats cave not Tasarins. he had offered his help to Gaiamat and Ashwise should they want help with the baby dragons. he had mostly spent the last few months helping in anyway he could. he wouldn't be dumb enough to disrespect a dragon again.

.........

Denna sat with her legs hanging over the edge of the cliff. while she liked Tasarin's cave she often chose to sit here in her down time so she could look over the trees beneath the cave. it was still early morning and she had woken up early to watch the sun rise. the past few months had been spent mostly learning about what it meant to be a dragon rider. the burn on her arm had healed into a thin scar that curled around her forearm. she traced her finger over the mark and sighed. it no longer hurt but the memory of the dream stayed with her. she hoped the others were doing alright and wondered when they would all meet up again.

Tasarin yawned widely, his breath causing a couple coins to slide from their previous place and tumble down the pile. He opened his gleaming red eyes slowly. Morning light fell in faint rays in the front of this chamber, where he slept. He preferred to always be near an exit, just in case.. and near Denna too.
Judging by the color, the sun was just beginning to rise. His sides heaved as he took a large breath and rose, stretched, then padded around his coin pile. A few rubies and sapphires dotted the treasures, and maybe a goblet or two. Nothing too fancy. But he loved it just the same.

He turned his head fully to the sun, breathing in the cold air. It made him feel more awake. But there was nothing more exhilarating than an early morning flight.
While he and Denna flew more often, it was nice to have a simple, casual flight to explore what lay around them. He still came up with new ways to challenge himself and make flying more interesting for his Rider as well.. he wanted her to be interested, all the time. Boring flights were the worst.

He approached her, making his presence known. Good morning. How did you sleep?
Tasarin and Denna were alone in his home, and he had no accommodations for a human. So he had to "borrow" from a cluster of villages by marshlands, a couple hours away. Blankets, poofy objects, a number of other things humans used to sleep on and decorate with. It was still pretty bare, but he was sure she felt comfortable living with him. Or at least he hoped so.

..::..
((I have updated Cedare's profile. I'll add a bit for her here though. I'm also thinking perhaps Cedare and Ashwise haven't had their first flight yet?))

Since the months had passed, Cedare had grown in almost every aspect. Her wings and body had grown considerably, her tail lengthened, and her claws and fangs have grown harder and sharper. Her scales, too, had changed to a magnificent green.
She now spoke the human languages fluently and constantly communicated with others around her. While she likes to learn and has learned quite a bit, she tends to get frustrated easily, off and on.
She learned to fly .. somewhat decently.. but still has not flown with her Rider, nor anyone else for that matter.
Cedare has also subconsciously strengthened her earthen spikes, and has overall grown into a strong and proud dragon.
At the moment, she was dozing peacefully.

..::..

Kharygos was pleased. His Rider could easily protect herself, if not be on the offensive, and he had only aided that strength with armor, a weapon and all his power. Her weapon had been finished many weeks ago, just as she'd requested it done. Caythas had pleased Kharygos immensely, and for that he was rewarded. The blacksmith had also included something else. A ruby, on the side of the handle. It wasn't big, but it wasn't small. The size of an eye.
The humans believed that if he breathed fire on it, it would be blessed by him. So bless he did - blowing a very small, weak spurt of flame that hardly touched the gem.

Her armor was finished as well. He had witnessed it's creation, keepinga strict eye on his workers when they measured Riona. It was efficient enough, and he had it redone twice. The final product was something strong but not too heavy, so she could move quickly if she had to.

He already had fancy pieces of armor that he could wear, but he never had to wear them. It was much easier to maneuver without it. Besides, if anything tried to get close to him he just torched them.
His attention flickered when he saw something in the distance. Just a bird.

He sighed. He had been edgier lately, worrying about many things at once. He used to be constantly flying from his home to Flynn's makeshift ones, but he did so less frequently now. Only once a week.

Right now he was perched on a rock, in between the shade of Flynn's home and the light that filtered through the clouds.. pondering things. There was so much to think about.. Riona and Flynn both wanted revenge from this dark haired girl and her mysterious dragon, Tasarin. It angered him to think they got away so quickly.
He still wanted to kill his father. While his search had been delayed by him discovering his Rider, he realized there were benefits to it.
He would not be alone if he had to fight him.

~~~
((I'll add stuff for Ryan later))
Denna looked up at Tasarin and smiled. "i slept well." she looked at the rising sun and smiled. "it's a beautiful morning." her voice was soft. "it's so quiet and peaceful." she smiled up at Tasarin watching the sun on his scales. "you have lovely scales..." she smiled. it was something she had said before and something she would say again.
she looked up at the sky again and sighed contently. "perhaps a morning flight?" Denna loved the feeling of the brisk cool morning air and was always eager for a morning flight. of course, she wasn't one to turn down a flight any time of the day, but morning was her favorite.
.......
Flynn spotted Kharygos and bowed his head to him. he could see the dragon was in thought and would not bother him. Somnium rested her head as well as she could on Flynn's shoulder. she was far to big to curl around him like she had as a hatchling but she still tried. she breathed a small amount of smoke through her nostrils and Flynn smiled. "soon" he ran a hand over the scales between her eyes. "you will have your fun soon enough." he grinned.
Green glinted in Gaiamat’s eyes. She sat in her room of jewels, admiring her peridot. She appreciated her gift much more now that it had been cut and polished. It was the purest peridot she had seen and the largest.
It made her think of Cedare. She had grown very fond of the young dragoness. She treated her as her own daughter. When it came time for her to decide what would become of Cedare and Ashwise, Gaiamat had insisted that they stay with her until Cedare was full grown. It was only because she loved Cedare that she took them in.
Besides, they really had no place to go. The little hut that Ashwise called home was many leagues away. And that was no place to raise a dragon. Cedare needed to be in the company of other dragons in order to mature into a socially adept dragoness. And that was exactly what she was becoming.
Gaiamat had enjoyed playing hostess to three young male humans and a beloved young dragoness, as well as her own son. She had forgiven Mathias for his slight and appreciated that he was teaching Ryan. As for Ashwise, she found that he was reserved and seemed to keep his distance from the other human men. But he was devoted to Cedare and was interested in her gnomes, and so Gaiamat respected him.
---
Ashwise slipped into the cavern with a satchel filled with plant clippings. Gaiamat had given him and Cedare a large cavern for both of them to stay in. It was like a private suite. Ashwise had a space where he set up his collection of herbs and other studies. He had made friends with the old gnome healer and was unofficially apprenticing under her to learn what she put into her elixirs. Last month, he had come down with a fever and was amazed by how her medicine had cured him. In general he got along very well with the gnomes and learned a great deal about their cultivation of root vegetables and great skill with gems and metal working. He kept a journal in which he theorized about how they were able to pass through walls and how they could live twice as long as humans, yet were half as tall. He was also making great use of Gaiamat’s library. She had a vast collection of books on plants.
He saw that Cedare was resting when he came in. He was stunned a moment by how much she had grown. And how breathtaking she was. Everything about her was magnificent. Ashwise set down his satchel on his work table. He took out his journal and began writing. He had not learned reading and writing until he journeyed south. And what he had learned from passing monks and scribes was not much. It was only in the last few months, with the proliferation of books and writing materials and gnomes to tutor him, that Ashwise had become proficient at academic pursuits.
He wrote a lot about Cedare. He jotted down his observations about her growth and the development of her intellect and personality. He wrote about the ways she interacted with Gaiamat and Corinn and everything else. He wrote about the beauty that occurred when she took flight. He wrote about why he was hesitant to ride Cedare. Ashwise found that he could write all of the things that he could not speak. When he was alone, he also began to write about his former life up North.
(( I’ll write Riona’s at another time, sorry I have not replied sooner…))
Tasarin waved his tail. The morning was indeed pretty. He could go on for a day on how to properly appreciate nature in all her glory, but he found no one wanted to listen to him for a whole day. He didn't even want that.
He lowered himself down so Denna could climb onto his back. He took off, thinking perhaps he might find a stag so they could eat the morning meal. He found it annoying to have to search for his food every day, but then he preferred everything fresh. So he really couldn't complain.
Are you hungry? We can go to a berry patch not too far from here. There's bound to be a deer or two nearby, he asked cheerfully.
..::..
Ryan rubbed his eyes tiredly. Finally.. finally he'd finished that ridiculous, cruel, horrible.. wonderful book. He'd stayed up the majority of the night to read it. It was written by a human. A rare articulate one too. Gaiamat had texts from many races and people, all of whom had a beautifully detailed story to tell. Not all of them could write, though. It was easier to tell stories than write them..
Which was, regrettably, why so much of his village's interesting culture had been lost through the times.
He closed the cover delicately, staring down at it with a pleased smile. There was in imprint of a bird grasping a flower on it. Ryan stood up and stretched his legs; he felt like he had been a part of the chair for a while now. His eyes wandered around his room. There was little sign he was staying here, besides the disturbed bed covers and the small piles of books on the desk. Like he'd promised, he read to Gaiamat almost every night, just as intrigued by the story as her. He felt very close to the dragoness. He'd learned much from her during his time here.
He left his room to find he, passing the library and various other rooms. As he walked, he heard and saw the gnomes as they bustled past, coming and leaving through walls.
He was more comfortable around them, and he assumed they were used to his presence now.
He finally found her in the room he called "the treasure room", even though it contined mostly jewels. Some of which he'd never seen before.. everything in her home continued to amaze him.
"Morning," he greeted her as a child would greet a friend.
..::..
Cedare opened one golden eye to a slit, to check for anyone dangerous. Ah, it was Ashwise!
It still amused her that even though he wad much older than she, Cedare was taller than he was. And she still looked up to him in the sense that he was a parent.
Of courses, there was no one she related more to than Gaiamat. The two were the only female dragonesses here, and it was nice to chat with her. Cedare loved to be around Gaiamat when she wasn't talking with Ashwise or Matty, bothering Corinn or learning more of the human language with Ryan.
She uncurled herself and lay on her side on the large, poofy cushion that she liked to sleep on. When she stretched her limbs, wings and neck, she purred delightfully and rolled over.
It was no surprise to find that Ashwise was writing. Cedare saw him writing often, but never knew exactly what. It made her curious but she never bothered to intrude.
She kept making the soft,humming sound and flicking the tip her tail, watching him in silence.
Denna grinned and climbed on Tasarin's back. the morning breeze felt wonderful against her skin and it took her a moment to answer Tasarin as she was too busy enjoying the air. "some berries would be nice." she nodded her head, calling into the wind so he could hear. over their time together Denna had to yell against the wind less and less. she and Tasarin had improved their bond over the past few months, and though she still had to speak her words for them to be heard, she no longer needed to be quite so loud on a flight. her goal was to exclude the need for words completely. the old stories she had been told as a child spoke of a proper dragon and rider being able to keep contact without needed spoken word. Denna intended to make her bond with Tasarin strong enough to do that. she enjoyed speaking with the dragon, but she was sure the people from the Volcano, and others most likely, would want to fight them at some point and Denna wanted to have the upper hand. if she could communicate with Tasarin through her thoughts then they would be much harder to fight. not that she wanted to get into fights, but she wanted to be prepared.
Denna had also been practicing her control of metal when she could. while she still had a long way to go before she had control like the boy with the fire whip, she was much better now. she could even shape the metal into spears, or knife like shapes and throw them without even touching them. it was definitely a handy tool to have, though she proffered to Practice a good distance from anyone, in case she lost control.
"some deer might be good too." Denna added answering the last part of what Tasarin had said.
.........
Mathias got to his feet and sheathed his sword. he decided to explore the caverns of Gaiamats cave once more. every time he did he found new rooms to explore, though he touched nothing. Mathias was grateful he had been allowed to stay and did not with to be on the dragoness's bad side again. today, Mathias opted to go looking for Corrin. in his time with the others he had grown fond of the little male dragon. he stuck his hands in his pockets, looking for the dragon.
Gaiamat rose to her feet when Ryan entered her room of gems. She must have risen too hastily, because she heard and felt the most awful crack come from her right foreleg. Her joints were so stiff! She gave her leg a shake and stretch and it felt much better.
In the last few months, Gaiamat had not done nearly enough exercise. She did not even hunt her own food very often, but had relied on the cooking of her gnomes. She understood why this was, and it was mostly because she had been taking care of two baby dragons.
The saddle and the armor for Ryan had been finished a few weeks ago. Gaiamat understood that such fine craftsmanship took time and she had been very patient for it. But now that it was done, she felt that she and Ryan had not had the opportunity to really use it besides trying it on.
Ryan, Gaiamat greeted him, amused by his childish tone. She guessed that he had stayed up late because of the drowsy look in his eyes. Still, she knew he would perk up by what she said next.
Put your armor on, Ryan. We're going for a ride today.
---
Ashwise snapped his journal shut and came closer to Cedare. He smiled at the sound of her humming. He stepped close to her and stroked the scales on her shoulder.
"Not that long ago, you were smaller than me," he mused, on a similar train of thought as she. He was amazed at the growth of dragons. Stunned, really.
"Were you dreaming of anything, Cedare? Do dragons dream?" Ashwise wondered.
---
Riona took full advantage of her authority among Kharygos's workers. Since becoming the fire dragon's rider, a change had come over her. It was evident in her physical appearance. Her former clothes were light and loose-fitting, appropriate for a desert nomad. Now she wore leather clothes of dark red. They fit more snugly and emphasized her height. Of all the pieces of her armor, her favorite was a sleek breast plate, perfect to her form, and lavished with masterful engraving.
Along with the breast plate, she always had her new sword sheathed on her belt. When she wore it, she walked with power. When she was among Kharygos's workers, she talked to them and remembered what angered them and what injustices they complained of . She tried to find the potential leaders among them… the generals, for the future army she envisioned.
Caythas was her favorite among the workers. She paid him the most attention and doted on him to show her appreciation for his skill.
That day, Riona recognized that Kharygos was off and alone, and so she felt it was not right for her to accompany him. Instead, she was in the forge, surrounded by the brawny captives whom she found the most appealing. She liked being around men--it reminded her of her days with the rebel criminals in Razikvania.
Kharygos yawned,sending tendrils of smoke wisping from his nostrils. I assume your flight went well? he asked.
He had learned to tolerate, if not enjoy the company of the young dragoness and her Rider. He had never met a spirit dragon, much less a nightmare one. It was intereting to observe her.
And Flynn had a personality somewhat similar to his own, which amused him.
But honestly he preferred the company of Riona.
She wasn't here at the moment, as Kharygos had left to find something to hunt. He had already eaten, and would most likely return to her soon, and see what she wanted to do that day.
..::..
Ryan's smile faded a little when he heard a crack come from one of Gaiamat's legs, but cheered up significantly when he heard they were going for a fly. Good - he worried that maybe she wasn't flying so often. As much as Ryan was learning about dragons, he still didn't know those small details. He'd get them through experience, he was sure.
"Excellent. I'll be back in a few minutes!" He turned and moved at a slight jog back to his room. His armor was there, hanging, waiting for him. It was without a fault and beautifully crafted. Much better than what the men of the metalworkers could do back at his village.
He put everything on and then laughed. He looked so much more.. older and more powerful with this on. The helmet that Reggengred made was his favorite piece, though. It was perfect, and he liked the way it made him look. Not too large, or making him look ridiculous with spikes that barbarians often wore. Nor thin like a piece of tin. It made him look brave.
But a piece of armor does not define the man, as he'd read, the man defines what he wore. Which is what he planned to do. He left his room once again, walking with a little more difficulty with the extra weight. As an afterthought he took Luminwing with him, in its sheathe and strapped to his waist. He felt more comfortable with the sword than before.
He had apparently taken a wrong turn..
"I never learn," he sighed, trying to find his way back. He'd never seen this part of the stone complex before, but didn't feel like hanging around. Ryan went back. He saw Matty walking past several feet away and then disappear. He might be going to see Corinn...
Recognizing where he was, he quickly found his way back to the entrance chamber. It was cool here with the air coming in and the sound of faint water. He waited before going to find Gaiamat, or her finding him.
..::..
Tasarin angled downwards so that the noise of the winds died down, and he was brushing over the treetops once more. His scales glinted in the morning light, reflecting like obsidian. Dawn and dusk were his favorite times of the day.. the black dragon did not care for the heat. Night was short with the multiple planets around them, so he mainly stayed in his den for the majority of the day.
A flock of brown and white birds soared above him, arguing about food or something or other. They were often like this. But when the birds actually made sense, it was worth listening to.
The unmistakable scent of small, white, blooming flowers and mint leaves and sweet berries was becoming more pungent in this area as he flew. He looked for an opening that presented itself. There wasn't a clearing, so he batted his wings while hovering. The leaves surrendered to the wind and he landed softly. The trees were thick, but the undergrowth was easily traversable.
There are small berry patches all around here. I perfer to roam around and enjoy the ripest of everything. Just be careful not to touch the round, completely black berries. They're poisonous.
He dropped down to let her off of his back.
He could smell Qel'dar berries directly to his right. They were a bright purple with orange insides, and tasted of honey. Perhaps he would go to taste those first.
..::..
Cedare blinked once. Sometimes. I dream of chasing birds or finding jewels. But I just dreamed that I was swimming in a large pool of glowing water. Gaiamat was there, and you.
She looked at him and then drew herself up, rubbing the smooth, side part of her head against his hand.
What do humans dream of?
Flynn nodded to Kharygos. "it did yes." he looked at his dragon. "she did very well." he smiled. Somnium nuzzled Flynn's neck and smoke fell from her snout. he did well too. Flynn laughed. she was a feisty little one when she wanted to be. he rubbed the scales between her eyes and nodded. "go hunt a snake or something." he smirked. Somnium eagerly obliged. though she looked like an adult she was still a baby in her actions. she chased off after a snake playing chase with it. Flynn laughed. "like a cat and mouse."
.....
Denna smiled and slid off Tasarin's back. she wondered around, looking for some tasty berried while being careful to avoid the all black ones like Tasarin said. she found some tasty looking pink berries and popped one into her mouth. it was sweet with a slightly sour tang to it. she grinned and picked a few more. after a few moments she looked around. above her she spotted a large leaf in a tree. if she could pick one or two she could fashion them into a makeshift basket. she jumped and caught the branch grabbing two leaves before dropping back down. it wasn't easy but she soon had a workable basket. once done, she walked around the area picking different berries. when her basket was full she returned to sit with Tasarin.
her basket held all kinds of berries, blue ones, pink ones, orange ones, red ones, dark purple, everything she found other then the black round ones. she offered a small handful to Tasarin with one of each resting on her palm.
Gaiamat called her gnomes to her. She stood patiently as they hoisted the leather seat onto her back and belted it on the underside of her belly. It fitted very nicely, although Gaiamat still felt that it was something she would have to get used to.
She made her way to the entrance tunnel. She felt that this was where Ryan was located. She was pleased when she saw him and very proud of the way he looked in armor. She came towards him and crouched low to the ground so he could mount her more easily.
My dear Ryan. Shall I ask Cedare or Corinn to join us in flight, or would you rather fly alone with me?
---
Ashwise closed his eyes for a moment and tried to envision the glowing pool that Cedare had dreamed about. He didn't know that dragons could swim--or at least that earth dragons could swim. It was something that he would like to see.
"Humans dream of… anything and everything," Ashwise replied, opening his eyes and stroking her head. "I think it is particular to the human. For example, I dream of finding rare plants or my first home in the North." He paused, as he considered if he should share more of his dreams. He decided to take a chance and share more of himself with Cedare. He realized, looking in to her trusting eyes, that he did not tell her enough.
"Last night I dreamt that I rode on your back as you flew. Denna… she was riding with us too. But it did not go well. The dream turned to a nightmare. The man with the fire whip was watching us from the ground. I thought we were safe from him because we were up so high. But he shot a fiery arrow at us. Your wing caught fire. We fell and… just before we crashed, I woke up."
He swallowed hard after he spoke this. His dream revealed a deep fear he harbored, ever since the encounter with the malicious man and woman at the volcano.
Ryan carefully climbed onto Gaiamat's back and sat in the saddle. "No.. I think we'll just go out by ourselves."
While he enjoyed the other's company, it made alone time with Gaiamat less often. But it made those times more special.. she was his best friend. More like ... a best best friend.
"Any particular place in mind? Or just where the wind takes us?" he asked, grinning with anticipation.
..::..
Tasarin lowered his neck and gently lipped up the berries from Denna's small hand. They were mostly sweet. Some more than others.
I did not know you were so adept at basket-making. Just another talent of yours, eh? He said playfully. But she really was very talented, with all she could do. It seemed that everyone he'd met at Gaiamat's home had had a detain power of some sort. Some of them he could not identify, but he knew that they were there. His mind wandered to Matthias.. her brother. When they'd met the boy had said something about Denna's family. He waited until the berries were mostly gone. Do you miss your family, Denna? Have you ever wanted to visit them?
..::..
Kharygos watchd in amusement as the young dragoness went off after a snake. It was good news that the flight went well.. he was impressed by how she could fly so well so early on. He turned serious then.
Are you planning anything soon, Flynn? I should bring Riona here..
Surely she was awake. And if Flynn wanted to do anything, she'd want to know too.
His crimson scales rippled with light as he stood up, preparing himself to fly back to his home. He waited to hear Flynn's words.
..::..
Cedare listened with concern. This dream did not encourage her to fly with Ashwise.. she was more worried for his safety than her own. She made a reassuring sound and tried her best to comfort him.
I promise that they can't hurt you. Or anyone that we know. Because this time you have me.
She spoke with a sort of determination. And then she decided it would be best to move on, away from this feeling of dread. Are you hungry? We could go and do something, she offered softly.
Denna bit her lip thinking. "well.... i do miss them. i would like to see them again." she smiled softly. "but im not sure my family could handle me arriving on the back of a dragon. im sure my father would laugh, but my mother and brothers, not to mention the rest of the village, they might all faint." she laughed a little harder at the thought. "though im sure once they came too they would all love you, if you were to meet them of course." she looked up at Tasarin wondering if he wanted to meet her family as well or perhaps just drop her off for a few hours. the choice was his in the end.
.........
Flynn rubbed his chin. "there is a plan yes. i think Somnium is ready to launch an attack. not a full scale one, no not yet. i mostly just want to scare them, let them know we are still here." he grinned darkly. "especially the dark haired girl." he shifted his weight of the leg she had trapped. it still pained him some, though hardly at all anymore. "she is the main target, though indirectly. i plan to take out the others one by one and make her watch. ill finish with that dragon of hers." his eyes held a dark light that was almost unnatural. he was close to getting his revenge. "i wouldn't mind leaving a few more burns though." he looked at Kharygos. "this mission however, is to get a piece of each of them. with something that is close to them, a cloth with their scent, or a valuable item would be better. somnium can get into their dreams with something like that. attack them mentally then physically."
I see. We'll have to find them, correct? They could be anywhere in the world, split up.. perhaps planning something for us.
Or maybe not. He'd already learned what events had occurred that day. The little earth dragon would be grown up. And the bond between them would be stronger.
But Riona, Flynn, Somnium and he were just as powerful. If they were to attack with mental and physical powers, then.. what could they have to respond with? Kharygos knew the battlefield. And he knew the offensive team had to be strong, and they were strong.
I will return with my Rider, he muttered, proposing that they answer these questions as a whole. Kharygos was more than ready to fight and end these people.
He dropped down from the volcanic stone, returning back up into the air. Hot, sultry wind filled his wings as he rose up into the mountains, passing through the great structures of rock until he reached the area laced with his scent that marked his territory. He wasted no time in finding his cave, and moving at a quick pace through the hall. His servants bowed their heads as he passed them.
Where is Riona? He asked a female, whom replied after she gulped.
"Lady Riona is by the forge."
He dipped his head in acknowledgement and went into the work room to find her.
..::..
Tasarin laughed- a sound deep in his throat that rolled like thunder. Dragon laughter.
Of course.. humans. But I won't leave your side. Not again. When shall we see them? He ate some more of the berries, finishing all the ripe berries on a bush and then sat down, licking his jaws of any juice.
Flynn nodded. "it shouldn't be to hard." he smirked. Flynn watched as Kharygos got up and flew to fetch Riona. he sat on a rock and watched his own dragon pouncing around after a small snake. he smirked and rolled his eyes. "brilliant. bloody brilliant." he thought it was funny how she looked so big and acted so Juvenile. of course, when she needed to she would act like a full grown dragon. Flynn had taught her this much.
........
Denna smiled. since the Volcano Tasarin hand't so much as left her side unless he knew for certain she was safe. so unless they were in Gaiamats cave or his own, she was never alone. of course, she didn't mind. she loved the dragons company. "we can go back to my village. i don't see why they would have left." she shrugged. "i think you might like my father." she smiled. "he's a bit like my brother only a bit smarter." she laughed lightly. Mathias and Denna's father were nearly exactly alike. Denna supposed she was like her father as well since everyone called her and Mathias twins.
Gaiamat was taken with the possibilities of where she and Ryan could go.
I like to go where I can see the majesty of stones, Gaiamat replied loftily to Ryan. Whether that is the feats of masonry achieved by your kind, or the ruggedest mountains and canyons… But I know the first place I want to go. Mordenai's Circle… a feat by dragon kind.
With that said, Gaiamat began to move forward. She transitioned to a jog, and then a earth-rumbling run down the entry tunnel. After a running start, she leaped out of the mountain, splashing through the waterfall and soaring into the air. With Ryan secure in the saddle, she felt more free to fly without endangering him.
Gaiamat's wings billowed and she spread them as full as they could go. She swooped between mountain crags and scared all of the goats and eagles and the tiniest vole into hiding. In a daring moment, she landed her feet on a rocky cliff and stood poised at an angle. The rock caved in under her weight and began to give away. She lifted from it just as the masses of rock began to crash and slide down the mountain. She flew away from the massive cloud of dust and upheaval she caused. The noise was still thundering.
How was that, Ryan? she asked. She wondered if the rock slide had caused him a fright or if he enjoyed it.
---
Ashwise was touched by the optimism of his dragon. He decided to share more with her. When she asked him what he wished to do, he admitted, "It would please me to see Denna again…"
He thought often of Denna. And he was concerned for her. He recalled how he had felt when he heard about her sleep terror, those few months ago. He knew that Tasarin would take care of her. But he wished there was some way he could know how she fared. And if he could tell her…
"But perhaps I should not," he finished, withdrawing back into himself. He had no business seeing Denna again.
---
Riona felt that Kharygos had entered his hall. The room seemed to grow hotter and she felt power and strength collect in the air around her. She withdrew from the workers and walked to the front of the work room to greet him.
"My Lord," she said and bowed at his feet. She reached out her hand and touched one of his great talons. She was filled with energy when she touched him. Energy and wrath. It felt like her blood was boiling in her veins. When she stood up and faced him, a flame flickered in her eye.
"Let's accomplish something today. I feel ready for it," she told him.
Cedare blinked. What harm is there in that? If you wish to see her then we'll go find her. He wanted to see her but was denying himself. This made her think. But if it made him happy, then she'd find Denna with him, if he wanted to, of course.
But he couldn't just climb down the side of the mountain, and she wouldn't even dare to ask Corinn to fly him anywhere.
I feel like going outside anyways, she said with a hint of determination, and she moved towards the exit and watched to he his reaction.
..::..
Ryan nodded eagerly. He hadn't heard of Mordenai's circle.. if it was made by a dragon he was sure it was amazing.
They began to run slowly and then, with the powerful burst it took to take off from the ground, he lurched forward. Ryan quickly leaned forward and looked ahead of him at the long, scaled, strong neck in front of him. The wind whipped at him and the speed in the air made ice-cold adrenaline drop into his veins. He yelled "whoooo!" but the sound was taken away as it left his mouth.
He could see goats fleeing where she flew, and then she landed on a cliff. He supposed the rock broke under her from the sound. It was like thunder, echoing throughout the mountains. He felt powerful, although he was simply a human upon the great dragoness.
"I'll never get tired of this," he replied. He loved flying.. ever since the first time he'd had to climb her tail to 'prove' himself not only to her, but as well as the two spectators.
He was very eager to see this .. Mordenai circle.. but he'd have a lot of fun flying.
..::..
Tasarin listened in interest when Denna described her village and family.
It was true, he did think of Matty as a friend, but mostly because of Denna. He wanted to see this village. Humans had never been a good friend of his, especially those who dared to venture to his home to kill him. So he would see their reactions.
We'll go immediately then. I would like to meet them. He shifted so that she could climb onto his back and took a deep breath. You'll have to navigate, I don't know how human civilizations are gathered.
..::...
Kharygos looked down at Riona with fierce pride. Good. Flynn has a plan.
It seemed today was the day that things were finally moving forward. And even better was the fact that Riona was ready for anything. Come, walk with me.
He planned to get back to Flynn as soon as possible so they could discuss what to do. He'd tell Riona the plan on the way..
Ah.. and of course, I believe it would be best to bring your weapon and armor.
They would not be caught unprepared this time.
Denna grinned. "alright." she climbed onto Tasarins back and looked around for a moment. "do you remember where you found me? well it was about a 4 hours elk ride south from there." that was the easiest way she knew to explain the location of her old village. she knew she had been moving north when she found the dragon, so south must be the way to go from there.
"when we arrive, perhaps you should drop me off and fly over head? so i can prepare them. i don't want to give anyone a heart attack." she laughed lightly.
.......
Flynn whistled for Somnium. he knew Kharygos would return shortly with Riona and they needed to be ready to fly by then. he would waste no time in seeking his revenge. their revenge really. he was sure Riona wanted wanted to hurt them just as much he did. oh they would enjoy this.
he grinned widely as his dragon flew to rest in front of him. he reached up and pet her scales. "in a mater of hours we will have them Somnium. they will not forget easily."
Gaiamat flew forward with a burst of speed when she heard Ryan express his delight for flying. She wanted to give him more excitement, so she flew fast--faster than she had moved for a century. She maneuvered in intricate ways to give Ryan more thrills. It was the first time in a while that she felt like a young dragon.
Of course, she could not keep up the speed and the tricks for the entire journey. She slowed down eventually and flew more evenly. Thus far she had avoided flying over human settlements. She flew over rugged terrain and kept near the mountain peaks. It was her habit to continue to avoid human sightings.
But there was one she could not avoid. She flew around the turn of a mountain. The valley below was very beautiful and she swooped lower to have a look at it. There--sitting by a fire--was a human man. He was dressed in hunting skins and he was cooking his kill. He was like an ant to her, but she still saw him and he saw her. His mouth gaped and she swooped past.
Gaiamat felt oddly happy that she was seen by a human. Ryan, I hope that man spreads word about seeing us. Perhaps we will become a legend.
---
Ashwise let his feet follow after Cedare. There was no arguing with her. She was right about him. He swallowed all of the reasons he felt he could not see Denna. He would go with Cedare. She was so bold, so wise, even for being less than a year old.
"If we were to go, how would you find Denna? She is probably out roaming with Tasarin," Ashwise proposed.
---
Riona agreed with Kharygos and dismissed herself to gather all of her armor and weapons. A female worker helped to arm her. Riona returned to Kharygos, dressed for battle.
"I'm ready, my lord. If you will allow me to mount…"
She was pleased to see Flynn again. Although she felt a strange rivalry with Somnium. It had been impossible to be alone with him without the company of his protective dragoness. Because of that, her relationship with him was purely professional.
Cedare thought for a few seconds. Tasain mentioned how amusing it was that Gaiamat and Ryan met on the same night as him and Denna, and how he had never known that Gaiamat lived so closeby. I assumed he lived around these regions.. since Denna had only been traveling one night's worth to find him. She had heard the stories, and they made sense. Of course she could be terribly wrong.. but that only meant more time with the fresh air. Her claws made soft clicking sounds as she walked on the stone.
All we need to do is catch his scent marked around his territory. And if he's out, we will follow it. I have noticed he tends to keep his rider .. shielded. So they won't be out long. Her last words were spoken dryly. Tasarin was the most openly protective dragon she'd seen so far.
..::..
Four hours of elk travel.. so it will be a very short flight, he thought to himself, amused. Dragonflight was the fastest mode of travel (in his mind).
He spoke slyly to Denna this time. Very well. I'd rather not have humans dying at the sight of me.
His claws shifted on the soft earth as he turned around. He lifted onto his hind feet only a few inches high, and then barreled forward, his wings beginning to outstretch. The leaves brushed against the top of his head as he moved.
Finally he leaped up, his wings outstretched as he bursted through the tree cover, the wind from his motion blowing a clear hole where he'd flown.
He angled back around, gradually increasing altitude so he could see the spot where he'd seen Denna when he got there. During spare time he sometimes went back there to remember. Surprisingly, a few bones of his deer still remained there. Scavengers usually dragged the entire thing to their dens and nests.
Your family, they won't .. demand that you stay or anything?
He asked this mainly for their safety. But he was sure that they would be like Denna. Reasonable.
..::..
Kharygos obliged and settled down, relaxing the muscles of his wings so they'd lie further back and she could mount more easily.
During this time he dismissed the workers who had been looking on.
Flynn and Somnium had their first successful flight when I left, he said, deciding to make small talk when they were to fly down to meet them.
((he'll have started walking by now...))
When Riona felt comfortable he rose and began making his way past his main room, through the blue corridor, and then greeted by sunlight.
..::..
Ryan wiped the water from his eyes that the wind had caused, then quickly put them back on the saddle to maintain himself. He was amazed at how fast she moved, even though she seemed almost dormant back at her home.
His heart pounded in this powerful rush of movement. He knew he should feel afraid - but he also knew he was safest with Gaiamat. Just the feel of flying.. he was sure no human other than dragon riders flew. He mildly wished he had wings so he could experience flight firsthand.
A valley came into view. Gaiamat appeared to be interested in it, so she went lower.
There was a man that he could barely see. He was the tiniest of specks below, with a brighter speck of orange that Ryan assumed to be fire. Ryan smiled when the dragoness spoke.
"That'd be the day. The mighty Gaiamat and Ryan! Woe unto those who speak against them!" He crowed, mocking a town crier, whom were infamous for praising higher-up individuals for pay. But really, the thought stuck in his mind. Gaiamat deserved to be a legend, no doubt. As her rider and friend, he was sure he'd be mentioned somewhere in there as well.
Denna smirked as they flew. she considered Tasarins question and shook her head. knowing he couldn't see her she quickly answered. "my mother will ask me to stay, but she wont require it. as for my father and my other brothers, im sure they will ask, but they will all know that my answer is no. their asking would simply be, just that. them asking. they know me too well to know that i would go back to stay now. it has always been my life's dream to travel the world, find dragons." she grinned. "i never expected it to happen so quickly, but i could never return now, not to stay."
Gaiamat rumbled in agreement with Ryan. She loved his spirit. I predict that human kind will give you honor. They will call you Ryan of the Deep, Lord Most High. Or Sir Ryan, beloved rider of Lady Earth Dragon.
She flew past the valley with the hunter. For a moment she had mistaken it for the valley where Mordenai's circle lay hidden. She had not ventured there for a very long time and for a little while she felt she was lost. This greatly embarrassed her, and she said nothing of it to Ryan. She continued on and hoped that she would regain her bearings. She focused on her memory of Mordenai. Once she did this, she felt a magnetic pull to his Circle.
Gaiamat descended into a great valley of sand colored stone. She was sure it was the right one. She felt a buzzing in her bones. There was a gaping chasm in the valley floor. It was wide enough for her entire wingspan. She descended into it and made some several large swoops until she reached the floor of the chasm. It was beyond the reach of humans. They would fall to their deaths or die of exhaustion if they dared to climb down into it. It went so deep that it appeared black at the bottom. Once her scaly feet touched the ground, Gaiamat uttered a word in dragon tongue and the space began to glow. It was a blue-green glow, and it came from towering structures of crystals. Small pieces were embedded in the ground and they glowed green. These crystals were marked with dragon runes, including the same rune that Gaiamat had uttered.
Mordenai's Circle, Gaiamat said in a soft tone, for clearly she found the space to be sacred. She bowed her head to the weathered spires that encircled them.
---
Ashwise's footsteps mingled with the sound of Cedare's clicking. He walked briskly beside her as they drew closer to the exit of the cave. He had always been fond of walking great distances, and so it did not bother him that he had to walk all over the network of caves to reach the outside world.
Cedare made it sound so easy to find Denna. The reason for her dry tone was very clear to him. "He has a right to keep his rider shielded. He almost lost her. Denna could have been… the fire people could have taken her life. If you think of it, the only other dragon we know with a rider is Gaiamat. And Ryan has not been threatened. He has not had anything bad happen to him."
Ashwise instantly regretted his words. He was speaking his mind, though. He found Ryan to be quite naive and sheltered. "Not that I wish him any harm, of course," Ashwise muttered.
---
Riona felt like a queen when she was on Kharygos's back. She loved riding him in armor even more, because her own plates of metal made her feel similar to his natural armor. She relished the heat that wafted up from his scales. He was entirely the perfect dragon for her.
When he mentioned Flynn and Somnium's first flight, Riona did not seem very enthusiastic. "What a happy moment for them," she said blandly. She did poorly when she tried to conceal her emotions. And in fact, she did not anticipate that she would be so prickled by this news. She did not wish to admit that she was jealous of Somnium.
Tasarin nodded his head, pleased at this news. Then we shall arrive there as fast as possible.
His wings beat the air, the steady sound comforted any worries he might have had.
Green leaves sped under him as he rode the winds, like jasper. In the distance, the line of trees seem to end where the land rose up. It was mostly just dirt and rock.. why was that? He went a little faster to see.
Ah, where Gaiamat had met Ryan. The upturned earth was where she'd tested him so many weeks ago. He remembered that night well. This meant that they would be upon the cluster of trees where Tasarin had encountered Denna and Ryan.
Surely enough he passed there too. He would reminiscence later.. he was excited to find the village.
He went south like she had instructed and soon smelled faint hints of firesmoke and freshly churned dirt, the distinctive scent that humans held, and dead wild animals. Finally it came into view... tiny humans, wandering aimlessly or working, some still as they peered out into the land that lay before them. He turned downwards into a sharp dive, his wings folded so he wouldn't jerk back up into the air painfully. Naturally he spiraled as he fell toward earth. Dives and freefalls were his specialty.
Just seconds before colliding with the waiting earth, he spread his wings and was propelled forward. Dark black claws outstretched to stop him - they caught in a clump of bushes and he came to a halt, having to take a couple steps forward for the power to fade away. His jaws were open, panting in exhilaration. The wind fom his motion blew past him and his Rider for a good few seconds.
They were a minute's walk to the village, but the majority of him was hidden by plant life. It didn't matter - they'd have to be insane not to see him just then.
Off you go. Be safe, he looked back at her, still breathing a little heavier than usual, sitting so she could slide off of his side.
..::..
Ryan grinned at her suggestions. "Maybe they'll write a book about us." He laughed at the thought.
Gaiamat flew past the valley and then into one the color of sand, descending into a large opening at the valley floor. He kept his eyes below him, growing more interested by the second.
He thought it was endless, as it was black.. but she landed. Ryan's eyes adjusted and he stared.
There were crystals all around - glowing varying shades of green and blue, some embedded in the rock. There were faintly pulsing dragon runes, glowing brighter than the rocks. There were formed structures of stone too, though it was hard for them to make out what they were.
Gaiamat dipped her head down. Ryan did the same silently - perhaps he should. So this was Mordenai's Circle..
"Why is it called Mordenai's Circle?" he questioned quietly. This place was beautiful, and he'd love to know more.
..::..
Cedare's tail twitched. Hrm, she said in a pondering sort of way. All of Ashwise's words were true.
Gaiamat protected Ryan well, it should be that he wouldn't have to go through such hardships. He was like a young boy to her, although he had taught her most of the language she used. He was excited by everything, like it was all new to him. I hope no one hurts him. I don't know how well he'd handle it.
Near Outside~
Cedare blinked her eyes as rays of sunlight fell across the rock of Gaiamat's entry room. It felt nice on her scales. She almost missed the wind. It looks lovely outside, she muttered, as if the fine details of the world could console her worry. Mostly it was to distract herself.
Whatever worked.
..::..
Kharygos snorted. A small puff of smoke exited his nostril as he did this.
Riona did not seem very pleased at the news, but that matter had been a wonder for him. She and Somnium never exactly connected from what he'd noticed.
When he reached the edge of the cliff he leaped off, his wings catching him on the wind. He took his time in flying down, swerving around mountains and gradually lowering. Flynn's home was in sight, but he circled it a few times before landing on a nearby boulder. And so it begins, his eyes gleamed with anticipation as he moved off the boulder.
Denna grinned as they flew. she noticed where Giamat had found Ryan, and soon after where she had found Tasarin, or vice versa. They had basically found each other in a way. as Tasarin slowed she smiled, laughing as he dropped into a dive. she could see her old village fly past below them and even saw a few people pointing. she was sure if she hadn't had the wind in her ears she would have heard shouts from the ground.
They came to a stop and Denna smiled sliding from Tasarins back. "i will be back soon." she said to Tasarin before she quickly ran off towards her old Village. it took only a few moments for her to reach the edge of the village, and once there she was greeted with a mob of people all eager to hug and talk to her. in the mass of people she spotted her mother, teary eyed and clinging to her father. Her father was staring at the sky, no doubt one of the ones who had seen Tasarin overhead. she grinned Widely and waited for everyone to settle down.
"Denna! Denna!" one of the children from the village called. "My older brother says you found dragons! is it true?" the whole village went silent, everyone's eyes on Denna. she took a deep breath then grinned. "it's all true." she nodded. "i have been with dragons, one in particular to tell the truth." she nodded. Her father pulled her into a hug. "well can we meat the great beast?" his eyes were bright and full of hope. Denna nodded. "yes. Mum and dad first, then i will bring Tasarin closer after." she turned and started walking. her mother and father eagerly followed. her mother was in fits of tears and her father had his eyes wide. Denna lead them to Tasarin and smiled. "This is Tasarin."
both her parents dropped to their knees in a bow.
.......
Flynn heard Kharygos and Riona land. he grinned and headed for where he knew they would be, eager to see Riona again. she had been with Kharygos a lot since meeting him, which Flynn understood. he was the same with Somnium, who refused to leave his side unless commanded. At the moment Somnium was off chasing more snakes. Flynn stood waiting for Riona to dismount with a smirk planted on his face. they had a lot to plan and discuss.
