Setting
When the Sunset came and much of the UK and Ireland were swept up in sudden natural disasters, terrifying monster invasions and yet other inexplicable supernatural phenomena, Nottingham was partially spared the fate that met many other cities. Roughly a third of the central urban area saw real destruction and upheaval, although much of the rest of it was quickly overrun by Hellhounds and other such monsters. Enough of the city was untouched, however, that rather than the mass exodus which overtook cities like London, many of the citizens banded together to defend themselves against the encroaching monsters. After the overwhelming chaos of the first few nights, enough of the city remained liveable for a large post-disaster society to form, mainly overseen by those who had been police. This settlement, secured by blockades and guards within the threatening area of the city as a whole, came to be known as New Nottingham (or simply New Notts.)
The city has seen much political change since then, however. Currently it is run by the Randals, under the leadership of their matriarch Emma Randal. She is by most accounts a fair despot, only demanding protection money from the larger businesses and keeping her large vigilante force under strict control. She seldom condones harsh treatment of the city's inhabitants, and her henchmen grant reliable security from dangers both human and Hellborne to those who live within the walls.
Due to its large number of inhabitants and resources, relative security and general Old World atmosphere, Nottingham is a desirable place to live, and as such it is in a state of growth even now. While directly after the Sunset only a fifth of the city could be called safe and habitable, gradual expansion and the clearing of monsters from more and more of the streets has led the Nottingham Settlement expanding to fill more than a third of the original urban area. In those areas that haven't been cleared, however, monsters still run rampant, and deeper into those destroyed areas of the old city there are said to lurk entities that, if stirred, would pose a threat to everyone who lives within New Nottingham.
