Lycaon sat on his silver throne as one by one his fellow deities entered the room filling the massive hall. The king tried to greet each of his guests as they arrived in his halls. "I"m glad you can come to lend us your wisdom." he said to Kurn as he entered. As Serena described her master's absence Lycaon gave an audible sigh of annoyance. He had a feeling that the mother would send one of her underlings to take her place. For once He had hoped that she would of neglected to send anyone at all. Despite his disdain for her master he greeted Serena courteously. He continued to greet each god as they arrived. When the god of death came before Lycaon with his formalities the king chuckled at his comment regarding Karvana and responded by saying, "Your not so lowly as you think yourself friend. If more of us were like you we'd have a far more peaceful world." When the last of his guests as of the moment entered with her objections Lycaon was ready to get angry but quickly held himself back when he noticed the way she looked at Entorios. He had always found the younger gods amusing and was rather curious about what would become of the two younger gods.

"Brothers and sisters, not all of our ranks have yet to gather here but I feel that our business is urgent and we can begin our discussion now and let the others catch up if and when they get here." the king said as he rose from his throne and paced through the room as he spoke. "As you all know we were only able to defeat our predecessors by using the miraculous metal known as adamant. It is the one thing that we are incapable of creating and it is said to be the bones of the fallen primordial gods themselves. As time has gone on we have used our precious supply for various purposes ranging from binding a few of our own numbers over the year to forging weapons of incredible power." As he made his last comment he gestured to his spear, one of the few adamant weapons. "Our stores of adamant are almost completely empty. If we were ever to have an internal threat we would have no means to bind them and will instead wage war against each other forever with no means of permanently defeating the other since we would both be immortal. This unsolvable conflict will accomplish nothing save the destruction of countless lesser lives." As he made this last comment he looked toward Serena, the only non-god in the room. "I have managed to find a rather large vain of the stuff deep within the Ulmish mountains. Anywhere else and it would easily be ours; however, Ulm is one of the few gods not part of this court and I fear that if he were to discover what lies in his lands than it would be vary difficult for us to acquire it without severe casualties and the hatred of the race of giants for the rest of eternity. I have gathered you all here to discuss a means of acquiring this adamant."

Vescteseg prowled his throne room angrily, for his last experiment had perished and he was lacking in Entorithi to tinker with. His current project in the caverns below his citadel is where he corrupted flesh and made it his, and where every minion of his could trace its lineage to. Then, he froze, standing absolutely still in order to take in the magnificence of his throne room to calm him down before he broke something again.

The walls were made of magnificent basalt stone, quarried by the undead, carved and shaped by his Alfar, with disturbingly delightful carvings all over the massive bricks. The throne itself was made of black Iron, with the foot of the throne surrounded by human skulls. The remains of a human Army that had marched to drive the Corruption back. That army's general now led a legion of Vescteseg's undead. Fitting in his eyes.

Then, out of nowhere, a thrum of energy batted behind his eyes, in his skull. A summons from his "King" of all things. Rolling his eyes he decided to go just for a thrill. Going to the center of the room, he slammed his warhammer on the ground. The skulls at the foot of his throne rolled forward and formed a perfect circle in front of Vescteseg's feet, and he leaped in.

The portal opened in the middle of the ceiling and he fell through, and when he landed his fall created a small crater in the floor. Slamming the hammer into the ground to help himself, which in the process created another crater, he swaggered over to Lycaon, contemptuously brushing past the other gods. He mockingly bowed before the king of the gods, and said "Greetings oh mighty Lycaon, God of Order and High King of the gods, I the humble Vescteseg have come as you have summoned." His voice seeming to have an extra note of sarcasm on the words King and humble...

Kurn, God of Enlightenment

As the rest of the gods continued to stream into the hall, Kurn stood back up and folded his hands into his white and shimmering robes. He moved to his position in the room next to Hazarmaveth and listened to Lycaon's words. He took in all of this information and instantly knew the wisest decision to take, but he did not speak just yet. He looked around the room and wondered what the other gods would come up with, judging their reactions as he smiled brightly at everyone. Finally he decided to take the floor after Lycaon had finished.

Stepping forwards into the center of the circle of gods, the white haired youth of a man came to rest and turned to look at everyone in one motion before he spoke. "In a situation such as this, trust is something that must be front and foremost. But Ulm is not always the easiest one to do so. If this adamant is to be obtained peacefully, perhaps a god is not the best option to use to get it. I believe that a mortal should be used in our place." Looking over at the only mortal in the room his eyes flashed lightly before he continued with his speech.

"If we influence a mortal, with the right traits of course, he or she might be able to... whats the word, trick Ulm into letting them have access to the adamant and once the mortal is in possession of it, we will able to claim it for the vault." He now turned to Lycaon and took slow steps toward him with his arm outstretched in his direction. "A word of caution, oh King. If you carry out this plan, choose your mortal wisely. Not just any will do." Kurn steps back out of the center and into his place once more to let the other gods and goddesses discuss other options or even add onto his own plan.

While they were talking, Kurn closed his eyes and ran his fingers through his short white hair. It had been forever since he had been in a physical form. He had to get used to it again, and soon. His cycle of travel was fast approaching when he would wonder the mortal world for a time.

After listening to Kurn speak, Aeristhatia twirled Myrelette thoughtfully until it turned from a glass to a scepter once again. It seemed like an excellent plan, considering mortals were very....disposable to the gods. However, Ulm would most likely take advantage of that As well.

As one of the younger Gods, Aeristhatia felt it improper to speak now on such a matter. However, as you know, She is anything but proper and so in her mind it seemed perfect to logical to give her imput.

"Why don't we give this mortal a companion to help them on their journey, Lycaon? An animal, perhaps? I'd offer a platypus, but I render that to be somewhat unhelpful to our hero. Maybe one of you gods have an idea?"

Feeling the earth quake with Vescteseg's entrance, she stepped back in line, muttering something under her breath with disgust and rolling her eyes. Of course this troglodyte of a God had to come prancing into the meeting like this. Hearing Lycaon's didsain for him, she couldn't help but chuckle, which she instantly regretted. She hoped Vescteseg hadn't heard it...

Lycaon listened to his court and considered their various suggestions and advice. Kurn was wise and one of the few gods who wasn't primaily concerned with their own interests and had rarely failed him in the past. He considered the idea of a mortal agent of the gods to retrieve the adamant. He racked his mind to think of a human capable of this task and only one could come to mind. She is insanely persuasive and can talk herself out of most things however she was stubborn and vary hard to control. He thought of Aeristhatia's suggestions and chuckle to himself at th thought of her platypus. He had always found tho use creatures funny and was certain that Aeristhatia was drunk when she created it. He considered sending klethi's mortal as she suggested; however, she she was too random and unpredictable to eb counted on alone.

"Kurn I do agree with your sugstion that we send mortal champion to deal with this issue. The giants are a dangerous people and Ulm is an unpredictable titan so I purpose we send a team heroes. As many of you know I had a daughter who is half god and half human. Getting Nymeria to want to help us will be difficult but if I can persuade her than she would be a very capable agent for us She will be accompanied by Klethi's candidate who seems to be capable enough." Lycaon then turned to face Serena. "It is said that your master's exalted are among the greatest warriors in the world. I would a honored if one of your ranks acompany our party of heroes." He then turned to face Aeristhatia. "Honestly with a team like this a platapus of te godess of trickery couldn't hurt."

This plan seemed risky but it seemed to be his best choice given the situation. He had little trust for the mother and her exalted but he knew that she was loyal to her servants and that it would be highly unlikely that she would disrupt his plans if one of them were part of it. He knew next to nothing of Klethi's elf but they tended to be useful people and he doubted that he would pose a threat to the plans.

Vescteseg stood tall as Lycaon civilly berated him for his little display, but Vescteseg could not be bothered to care. He crossed his arms and said "Aye brother, then it will have caught up with you!" chuckling at his little bit of wit, he moved more to the edge of the room, standing seperate from the other gods. A voice calling his name caught his attention however, and he moved towards she who had called him: Klethi, the goddess of Chance. Grimacing at her choice of praising, his attention was piqued by a seeming willingness to work with him. Moving towards her, he was interrupted by the lackluster god of enlightenment Kurn, who prattled on about sending a mortal of all things to secure the adamant veins. Now of all things, Vescteseg did not want Lycaon renewing his stockpile of Adamant, for that would mean he would be putting his neck under a sword of Damocles. Vescteseg would have to strike first. All these thoughts raced through his mind, and inside he was cursing virulently.

Then once more, another one of the weaker gods bothered him. This time it was that pathetic godling Hazarmaveth, bleating about his entrance and keeping things civil. Turning towards him his eyes glowed with purple fire, and he said in a voice that sounded like a pleasant enough male baritone, but was wreathed in nastiness, "Civil? Why Dear Hazarmaveth I simply OOZE civility. It is others who offend me. Whining to our King Lycaon about all the souls 'trapped' in the Corruption when you think I'm not paying attention. You can come and try and collect them if you dare. You will find my strength is much grown."

And all the while the discussion was going on. Thus he decided to intrude. "Brothers, Sisters! I have a solution. We must make Ulm a trade! Within my realm there is a great lake of lava, created by the great Titan. However, it was taken as my land expanded. I can offer this land back to him, with a corridor leading back to his mountains if he grants us rights to the adamant. However, seeing as I will be sacrificing a not so small portion of territory I demand the right to half the Adamant." Thus speaking, he crossed his arms and set his stance to await the others' responses.

Kurn, God of Enlightenment

Kurn listened to the new ideas sprouting from the deities present. Each one added something new into the creative discussion they were all having. The plan was growing, and so far it seemed like it might succeed with a bit of luck. The champions they were discussing being chosen were well qualified for the task, but than Vescteseg comes in with a completely new plan. Kurn liked this idea of his despite the risks. If it failed than Ulm would know about the adamant and they would have nothing. Still, it was a peaceful solution that benefited everyone, and that is what Kurn wanted most of all.

Kurn raised his hand up near his shoulder to signal he was about to speak. "I second Vescteseg's idea. However I suggest being subtle about the offer of trade. Let Ulm offer the Adamant on his own, or perhaps if he is stuck on a counter offer mention it in passing." Kurn felt one of his followers offering him something at his temple, and he kept one eye at the meeting so he could appear at his temple in a spectral form.

In Kurn's 'Temple of the Mind's Eye' there was a nomadic patron on his knees in front of a large mirror where one would lay offerings at it's base. The offering was a bowl of flowers in a variety of colors. A glowing outline of Kurn appeared in the mirror and surprised the man making the offering. Kurn sucked the bowl of flowers into the mirror and laid a blessing on the man in respect of his long journey, allowing the man to travel out of his body in his sleep for the rest of his life. His will now finished, Kurn's specter returned to his body and with it came the bowl of flowers which he now held in front of him.

Aeristhatia boredly watched Kern talk to the other Gods. She enjoyed Kurn, but he tended to get a little bit....bland sometimes. This gathering was becoming increasingly monotonous, and she wished it was over. She looked to Lycaon with a silent plea of suffering. Rolling her eyes she began playing with a lock of hair. "I might as well become the goddess of unnecessary pain If this keeps up." She muttered to herself. She knew fullwell how important this matter was, however it was hard for her limited attention span to comprehend. She attempted a subtle sigh to show her discontent, but it came out as a large "HHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGCCCCCCCHHHHHHHH". She was met with a handful of giggles from some of the other gods. She hated when they used her favorite things against her. It wasn't like they threw tarot cards at klethi when she was being annoying...

Aeristhatia brushed the hair out of her face rather ungracecfully. "Lycaon is right. Although I know that many of our heroes will perish, it Is worth the adamant. I only wish we had a keeper of some sort to gaurd it and protect it once it is in our possesion for until it is needed." Glancing at Vescteseg's smirk, she shivered. Aeristhatia was terrified of him. She always had been.

Voice quivering, she continued. "It would save us contention and battle over who gets the adamant." She stepped back in line beside the others. She reprimanded herself for looking like such a fool, cowering under Vescteseg's shadow. Aeristhatia turned Myrellette into a fan and gently fanned herself, waiting to see what they thought of her idea.

Kurn, God of Enlightenment

As the planning seemed to reach it's apex, Kurn seemed to be pleased with the overall outcome. He saw that the meeting was soon at an end, so he moved a little ways away from the main group and wandered to the back corner of the room. Creating an orb of light he sent it into the corner of the room as it took physical form as a table of exotic foods with chairs around it. Kurn took one of the seats and grabbed some fruits as he ate for the fun of it. As a god he did not need to eat so it as just for the flavor that he even bothered putting food in his mouth.

His conciousness raced to several different places again, moving from place to place as it searched out several things of interest. His physical body kept eating without really having need be given the command to do so. Kurn's eyes if anyone noticed swam with rippling color across their surface as he was deep in thought at the table. He always had one ear on the discussion however, and kept track of what the current topic was.

Vescteseg rolled his eyes as the feeble god Entorios broke into song. A decision of this magnitude was being discussed and the fool sings? This, this is why Vescteseg needs to be lord. Then after the long winded thing finally finished the weak goddess of Mischief spoke, looking up at him and quivering in not a little fear. Vescteseg looked at her, and asked "What is the matter Aeristhatia? You seem a little... fearful. Is there something that the assembly here should know about? Hmm?" His voice rolled with distaste.

Striding back into the center of the room, he said "Comrades, I do not see why we should try to offend Ulm by sending heroes sneaking into his territory like criminals! Why, if any of you tried to do something of that sort I'd send back their head on a pike. Oh wait, I think I have" and with that he turned towards the crowd suddenly "We don't need a war with the Giants. That would end badly. For everyone involved, seeing as Ulm possesses the Adamant. We need to be cautious, and offer him things in return. Do you all understand what I'm saying. What you have suggested is tantamount to a declaration of war!"

As Vescteseg was about to continue his speech to convince them of his plan's worth, he felt it. Like a tingle across his whole body a being of immense power had stepped into the Corruption. His eyes widened for it was Ulm himself. Turning back to the Gods, he said "Ulm has crossed into my territory, I must depart." And with that he slammed his hands together causing a concussion of air to spread through the room, causing a new portal to open which he stepped through. He was transported right in front of the Titan.

Bowing deeply, he called out "Greetings O Titan. What brings you to my fair land?"

After Vescteseg left, there was an odd silence in the room. "Good riddance, you old [insert favorite curse word here]!" Said Aeristhatia, breaking the silence. "I suppose it may be a good idea to further discuss this predicament another time, Lycaon. It may help to let everyone for the better to think on it for a while." Closing her fan she glanced up at him. "Additionally, it would give us time to prepare our heroes." Stretching, she leaned against one of the silver columns, almost tripping in the proccess.

Aeristhatia popped her knuckles and looked around the room, attempting to read the other's expressions. Her face let out a quirky smile as her eyes landed on Entorios, softly humming. Her face felt hot as she averted her eyes to the sterling silver floor. She had never met the diety of love, but they seemed like a total [insert second favorite curse word here] if they though Aeristhatia would fall for the God of music. Aeristhatia was most likely going to remain single for the rest of her existence. After all, she really had nothing to offer besides her charisma, stunning good looks, wit, her all around perfection, her lack of all around imperfection, etc etc etc.

Ok maybe she was exaggerating a bit...

Snapping back into reality she listened to see what Lycaon would say, hoping he would consider her suggestion.

"My hero is ready immediately!" Klethi declared. "And whether the rest of you have your heroes prepared is your own problem. I will be setting Fenris on his journey immediately. Not that he needs it, but I'd appreciate greatly if your platypus companion would be ready to accompany him soon. He is a fan of animals and I have no oxymorons of my own to provide. If you lot will excuse me, I have words of my own to exchange with the big V and Ulm."

And Klethi was gone.

And Klethi was there in the swirls of corruption of death that was Vesctseg's realm. She seemed undisturbed (perhaps even content) by her environment. Her face was filled with delight on seeing Ulm, which wasn't the reaction he normally drew. "You! Titan! I have words to exchange," she declared. "I should have you know, because I believe in a fair fight, that a contingent of mortals will soon be marching on your mountain to relieve you of your stores of adamant. They will be sorely disappointed on arrival, not because of any threat your giants could pose, but because they will find the ground unexpectedly empty. Preceding their misadventure will be the greatest story of guile, skill, agility, daring, heroism, and death that this world has seen for a thousand years, by the end of which you will become the sore butt of many a mortal and god's joke when I, Klethi, Goddess of all Probability, will be the owner of your stolen wondermetal thanks to the efforts of the most loyal protagonist, Fenris the Lucky!" She crossed her arms like she expected an answer, but whatever Ulm's response would have been she wasn't patient enough to wait for. "Even now I bet he is slaying your top commanders with nothing but his bare hands and platypus companion. What an embarrassment this must be for you, Ulm. You'll surely want to crush Lycaon's daughter to relief the sudden rage and depression that will be overcoming you with this loss." She nodded triumphantly. "Don't say I didn't warn you. But it's hard to prevent Fenris from achieving something, even when his own Goddess is betraying his secret plan to his enemy. Go ahead. Go back to your mountain right now. Find it emptied of all its riches."

Kurn,God of Enlightenment

Now that the meeting was over Kurn let the table of food fade into nothing. He bowed to Lycaon and to everyone else before vanishing from the room.

Now in the mortal realm, Kurn's clothing has changed to a simple commoners tunic and belt with basic shoes. He kept his short white hair and youthful body as he stepped out onto the grass. Around him was a clear grassy hill overlooking a coastal town below in the valley to Kurn's north. He made his way on foot down into the town and pulled up the hood sown to his tunic up over his head. He quickly found his destination, a tavern called 'The Flying Fish'.

Inside this tavern Kurn sat in a corner and waited for the bar maiden to come take his order. He asked for a cup of tea and gave her more than enough money to cover it. There he relaxed for the next hour, enjoying the conversations and merriment in the tavern as he sipped at his tea and absorbed the attitude of those in the room.

Bursting through the doors with plenty of unnecessary Flair, Aeristhatia greeted everyone with glee. "Sorry I'm late! My little Mercutio had to look his best..." She gave him an annoyed sideways glance. "But here he is! I introduce to you, Sir Mercutio Benedict Abernathy Potts!" The animal came waddling in, examining the scenery. As Kurn presented Feroun Nymeria eyed the owl. She hadn't had an avian companion since her hawk Apollo was devoured by Belirand two years ago in their fight. Kurn's humble yet polite mannerisms caused Nymeria to realize how rude she was acting. The unremarkable elf wanted to get into her pants but if the god's trusted him maybe there was something more to him. For the most part she was only acting rude to annoy her father. Was she any better if she took her problems out on the poor atheist. She decided to wait and let the others have a chance at the owl first. After no one claimed it, the demigoddess walked up to the owl and said "I'll take you if you'll have me." She was then interrupted by Aeristhatia and the incredible talking platypus. She was surprised that even the platypus seemed to want her but she shrugged it off and responded.
"It's perfectly fine my dear beaver duck hybrid friend. I'm sure our friend Fenris can learn a few manners from you." she said as she shook his equivalent of a hand.

Lycaon watched the heroes speak and thought that perhaps they might have a chance. When Fenris broke down and asked about leaving he responded by conjuring a silver lyre out of the air and having a servant hand it to the elf. "Your going with my daughter, the other fellow, and the platypus whether you like it or not. I hope this lyre is to your liking. If you'd rather another instrument it can change itself upon your command. Now I must go. I have something else I must work on for your quest. And Borne when you return my offer still stands." With that and a flash of bright silver light he was gone.

Nymeria commented to her three companions. "I've heard of this divine liquor called Star Tears. They must have it at a bar somewhere here. I suggest that we make its acquisition our immediate goal and we can discuss our plans over a few glasses. I'm sure one of you gentleman would want to buy a lady like me a drink."

((OOC: Valerian, you have full control over Feroun now, well Nymeria does anyway. He speaks to people through mental images sounds and sensations, so keep that in mind.))

Kurn, God of Enlightenment

Feroun turned around with a light jump as Nymeria approached and stared up at her in the avian way all birds did. Without question the bird flapped it's way up to her shoulder and stayed there, marking her as it's keeper. Kurn himself was pleased with the outcome and was now ready for the platypus to arrive. The attitude and voice of the platypus sent Kurn into a fit of laughter where he stood next to Lycaon. He doubled over from his hysterical humor and squirmed on the floor without any regrets of his laughter.

He eventually sobered and stood whipping the tears from his eyes. He manifested a glass wine bottle of water and poured his tears into it off his fingernail and hid the bottle in his robes. It seemed Nymeria had a taste for the Star Tears now so he would make an attempt to keep her away from it during the day and during the quest. Little did she know he was one of two gods who could make it, and he would not disclose the second one.

"L-lycaon, thank you very much." Fenris took the lute from the servant slowly, like it might metamorphize into a snake at any moment. He pulled at each string once with his index finger. "...it can be any instrument? Can it be multiple at once?" He could orchestrate an entire band. Hopefully a sufficient performance would make Klethi forget about his seduction sidequest.
"Liquor?" Fenris asked Nymeria. In Azal it was still morning. Regardless, "I don't like alcohol. If a milk or fruit juice can be substituted, I would be much obliged. I mean, I'm obliged at all to be welcome in Lycaon's great hall. But I do not wish to partake in quaffing from the chalice of inebriation. But I a appreciate the offer, thank you."
And there was a platypus. That could talk. And it had better manners than him? Well excuse me Ms. Nymeria, but he wasn't given an introduction by the goddess of awkward situations. "Are you Aeristhatia's champion?" He disregarded the goddess herself entirely; she didn't receive the same difference Hazarmaveth did. "I am Fenris. It is... a rarity to make your acquaintance. "If I may, noble platypode, may I suggest you refrain from using terms like 'robust' to describe women. It is my belief they prefer affections like 'perky.'"

Kurn, God of Enlightenment

Sitting in his temple in a high chamber, Kurn looked down at the three hundred witnesses who had come by choice to view the quest second hand at Kurn's temple. The Odd God as he was called currently took the form of a decrepit old man with pure white hair and a beard almost down to his waist and light blue robes. He carried a long twisted staff which helped him walk. He stood and took several steps forwards to look over the veranda at the crowd who now roared with applause. Kurn said nothing as he tapped his staff on the stone, summoning all the gods who had come to Lycaon's call last meeting to his temple and at the same time opening his temple doors.

The crowd rushed inside and found stone pews waiting to seat them in front of a one hundred foot tall and forty foot wide mirror where most of Kurn's offerings were left. As soon as everyone was seated Kurn took his own seat and changed the mirror so that it showed Lycaon's opening speech to the questing group and followed them to the edge of Ulm's territory where it would show their progress. Kurn had larger seats on a second floor viewing the mirror for each god to sit, each seat designed after the god's powers.

Kurn waited for the others to arrive and greeted them all individually with a bow and welcome. He had food set out for the mortals that would constantly replenish, and a special table upstairs for the gods to use. Kurn had made sure to make it entertaining so the god's table was strewn with foods from exotic locations and even from the future, as Kurn was able to connect with his future conciousness and 'travel' through time to get candy, popcorn and other future foods.

Serena, Herald of the Mother
Image

Serena lounged upon a bed of cushions strewn around the floor, mindlessly picking at the bowl of grapes to her side as he eyes roamed the courtyard of Obsidian Palace. A few of the Exalted practiced their arts in the field, hacking and slashing at each other to prove their dominance over the other as, even the Exalted were not above such desires, and out of the corner of her eye she spotted Vas sitting in a dark, gnarled tree twirling her dagger in boredom. Serena shared that boredom, it had grown dull on the mortal world, as of late, with little need of their skills and the lack of any amusing events that they could watch unfold.

Some of the younger Exalted looked forward to watching the 'quest', but Serena didn't. She had watched them unfold before, it was mostly walking... and more walking... with a bit more walking added in for good measure. Perhaps, a conversation here and there as they 'bonded' which was, somehow, even more dreadful to have to witness and the less she spoke about the 'love' that would sometimes blossom during long, extended periods of isolation with members of opposite sexes, the better. Yes, the fighting was far and in-between, 'quest' were a dull affair.

Plucking a lone grape, she brought it to her lips and slipped it in, closing her eyes as she chewed. It didn't help that Mother hadn't shown any enthusiasm either after the initial news. She had yet to pick a champion despite the 'group' supposed to be meeting today to start out on their 'quest'. It seemed her desire to aid the quest was based entirely on watching the half-breed and how he preformed. Serena was glad the half-breed had taken refuge in the realm of the 'God-King' as, if he hadn't, there had been a good chance the Mother could have ordered Vas, or herself, to bring the half-breed to the Palace, so the Mother could take a 'closer look' at the boy. That task would not have been difficult, but Serena would have questioned the value in the boy and wasting her time on maimed half-breed.

A voice swam through her mind, a warm voice, "Serena, dear, it seems the God of Boredom has 'invited' me to his realm which means the quest has begun. I have decided on my," the voice paused, and Serena could picture Mother tapping her finger against her lips as she pretended to ponder on the word, "'Champion'. I will open a portal to their location, be a dear and help to send them on their way."

Serena pushed herself up from the cushions, taking a moment to clear away the wrinkles in her dress as she did so. The dark portal opened tore open space in front of her with budding curiosity on the 'champion', Serena stepped through it.

Skarruk and Shebaba
Image

Skarruk's black eyes took in far more light then any human's could possibly hope for, so the secrets of the dark, dank tunnels could not hide from him. He was on a hunting trip, a suicide trip really, to explore the troll warrens and bring back their 'treasure' for the Chieftain. But that is what he got for overextending his authority as tribal shaman, he gently prodded Shebaba's abdomen with the end of his spear, coaxing her to keep moving through the tunnels.

His skin crawled with every step she took within the caves, his heart thumping faster in his small chest as he fought down the panic that was rising, he wanted to turn Shebaba around and flee. One troll was bad, two was worse... but an entire Troll Throng? That was death, and he had no desire to have them puke out their stomach contents on him as he dissolved in the acid of their bile. Shebaba must have sensed his fear as she stopped once again, Skarruk let out a curse in Gou'Toki as he prodded Shebaba again, but she wasn't moving.

Skarruk frowned and smacked her harder, a loud crack splitting the air and echoing down the tunnel as the shaft met her armored carapace, and still nothing. Not even a chitter of warning to him for his blow... nothing. She hadn't disobeyed him since she was a spiderling, and more then that, she had never not responded at all. Skarruk shivered as a chill ran through his body, his dark eyes scanning the tunnel as his instincts screamed at him that something was very, very wrong.

Finally, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted movement, something in black that he had not noticed before. Instinctively, he tried to prod Shebaba again, but she wasn't moving, merely staring ahead as if lost in her own world. Gripping his spear tighter, he started to chant in Gou'Toki calling upon the magical energy in the air to come to him as the shadow started to move, "Drath tokin'ra Ko.." his voice died as the magic he called to him was being unraveled. Unraveled faster then he could draw it in, his panicked mind raced as his instincts continued to scream at him to run away from the figure, that it was dangerous.

But the shadow kept coming, advancing at a slow, almost lazy, pace. Reflexively, he thrust his spear at it when the shadow came in range, but it was smacked aside the blow as if it was nothing more then an annoying gnat, before he could move, it shot out at him like a viper, gripping his throat and lifting him off Shebaba as if he weighed nothing. Skarruk clawed and scratched at the arm holding him, his dirty nails failing to break the material over its arm, grasping for his belt, he tried to pull out his dagger, but a flash of pain blurred his vision as the shadow slammed him into the cave wall.

Blinking away the tears, his vision cleared and finally, at this range, he was able to see the shadow for what it was. A human, but not just any human, his dark eyes fell on the pale beast skull on her head, and his heart froze in terror. The Herald. He had never seen her. None in their tribe had, but they knew her. Just as all knew the Mother. It was an instinctual knowledge, no different then breathing, a primal fear and awareness that lurked in the back of their mind, buried deep within their very creation. But the knowledge did little to alleviate his fears.

"Skarruk," The herald said in gou'toki, her voice cold. It was odd, it held no accent, no personality, it was as if Skarruk had read the words carved upon the wall, "The Mother has chosen you to preform a task. Succeed, and you shall be rewarded. Fail and pray that your death is quick."

His black eyes widen in equal parts fear and surprise, he would have asked why, but he had trouble forming words around the thin hand gripping his throat, "You are to join a... group formed by the gods and aid them in their task," with that, her hand released his throat, and gravity took its toll, his body smacking into the cold, hard ground as he breathed deep trying to fill his lungs with the musty tunnel air.

"W-What task?" Skarruk gasped, pushing himself to his feet.

The Herald watched him, her face revealing nothing as she waved her hand and as the air itself seemed to tear, a dark portal coming into existence, so abyssal it seemed to even draw in the lesser darkness of the tunnel into its embrace, "Go," the Herald commanded.

Skarruk fumbled around, his dirty green fingers combing the ground until they bumped into the shaft of the spear. Picking it up, he returned to Shebaba and climbed on, the soft chittering sound his companion made were soothing as they echoed in the tunnels. It was a familiar sound, one he hadn't thought he would find so comforting once he had been deprived of it. Gently nudging Shebaba, he led her towards the portal, and with once last look at the Herald, her through it.

Skarruk let out a pained cry as the burning light seared at his eyes. He dropped his spear as his hands came up to cover his face, gripping it in agony as his pupils tried desperately to adapt to the massive amount of light assaulting them. His eyes clasped closed, his hands shot over his head and gripped the hood of his cloak, pulling it over his head to mercifully shield him from the harsh, blinding rays of light that peaked through the trees.

From the sanctuary of the shadows provided by his hood, Skarruk blinked away the pain and flashes of light, he could smell humans, an elf... beast... He gripped his spear even as he felt Shebaba move under him. Finally able to see, he looked around, his head moving in quick jerking motions as he scanned the forest, from the other 'champions' in it, to the large beast prowling around them. Shebaba had adapted quicker, it seems, as her fang's chittering grew louder, a warning to the others, as her two, blade-like front legs lifted into the air ready to strike at anything that came too close.

"The Mother's...... contribution," the cold voice of the Herald said from behind him, he turned his head, almost glad to have her there as while she was terrifying, she was a terror he was more familiar with. Skarruk looked at the group one more time, before gently laying his hand on Shebaba's head, calming the spider as it lowered its legs and left its aggressive pose.

The rustling of grass drew his attention back to the Herald who had stopped half-way in her turn to go back into the portal, her head turned to fall on one of the, what Skarruk could only assume was some kind of wounded human, "The Mother has taken an interest in you, half-breed. She will be watching your actions from now on, do not disappoint."

It seemed she did not want, or need, a reply as the Herald turned back and entered the portal, the dark vortex closing behind her.

With his only... 'ally' gone, Skarruk gripped his spear tightly, his knuckles turning yellow from the pressure, "Skarruk," he said roughly, his voice till hoarse from the near strangulation, "Shebaba," he said, touching the spider on the head to give introduction. His large black eyes kept jumping from human, to... wounded.. human, to elf, to beast trying to watch them all for signs of treachery or aggression at the same time and failing at anything more then looking like a jerking patient going through withdrawal.
