A 13 year old from one of many parallel universes, she wants to find a way home.

0 · 260 views · located in Earth 1

a character in “Parallel Universes”, as played by Tiger-twig

Description

Isabell looks like a normal 13 year old girl in her universe, with dark indigo hair that is long and straight. Her hair is worn in two neat plaits most days. She inherited her father's brown eyes but unlike her father at night her eyes glow a bright, mysterious orange like her mothers. Her skin is slightly tanned like her mother's and she has a birth mark in the shape of a Yin and Yang symbol on her left arm. She is half witch, half human and most often wears knee length shorts and patterned t-shirts with thin, twisted straps.

Personality

Generally Isabell is very adventurous and adores being outside. She's friendly and enjoys talking to people she can be calm and gentle when she needs to be but is a lot of fun.

Equipment

Isabell carries with her a book of spells, a special braclet that is purple with silver embroidery on it, a few pens and her school stuff in a backpack.

History

Growing up in a small peaceful village Isabell is used to talking to friends who live near her especially as she has lived in the same house that she was born in. Her younger sister Lyn lives with her and shares a bedroom in their cosy house. The girls mother Ianna, a clever and kind witch, has always been there for them, from helping them with homework to teaching them spells as both Isabell and Lyn are half witch. Often their human father is away with work but he loves his family very much. Isabell has always been a happy child with many chances to play with her friends outside.

So begins...

Isabell smiled in triumph "Like that?" she asked her mother, tilting her head to the cauldron full of potions. She was making a potion that cured a headaches today, her mother taught her spells and potions every saturday morning and after school that was in the mornings some days. "Yes, exactly like that." Her mother responded proudly. Isabell was interupted from her pride by her younger sister Lyn, who was also being taught some easier potions by their mother. "Mummy...." She called nervously from her smaller cauldron at the other side of the room. " Is it supposed to bubble and overflow like that?" She said cautiously looking at the potion that was unnaturally pink and overflowing as they spoke. Isabell's mother panicked "Oh no, Lyn! What did you put in that?" She cried rushing over to sort out the mess. "Isabell you may go play outside now, I think your lessons are done for today." She called whilst calming Lyn's potion and fetching a mop from the kitchen. "Thanks mum!" Isabell called before rushing out the front door.

She wandered into the beautiful forest crawling under the trees, she was about to stop and sit down by her favourite tree when she noticed something. It did not look natural and she definately had not noticed it before. She crept towards it, it looked like a pathway carved into a tall brambled hedge. It wasn't just any old hole in a bush though it was so neat and lined by many flowers, Isabell decided to see if the other side looked as neat so she curiously crawled through it.

Pulling herself off the ground and brushing off her dirty shorts she looked up, Where on earth was she! It did not look like the forest at all, it was a dark dirty alleyway. Isabell turned around but there was nothing behind her but a plain brick wall. She panicked and ran down the alleyway. Straight away she was hit by the noise from a massive grey street. A foul dirty, smell hit her and she wrinkled her nose in disgust. There were things like the carridges at home but loads of them above ground. She was knocked to the side slightly by a person in strange clothing, more people were filling the streets and she had to dodge to the side of the road to avoid them all. She ran along the street hoping to get away from the noise.

After pausing at the side of the road where it was slightly less crowded, Isabell was caught off guard as someone yelled a name she didn't recognise and hugged her tightly. Unsure of how to react she just stood there awkwardly until the girl started talking. She did not look like the people here in their tight dark clothing. In fact she was the normalest person she had seen since Isabell had ended up here.
As the girl realised Isabell wasn't the person she was looking for and started to walk off Isabell called out, "Wait!" she caught up with the girl. "Do you know where we are? I'm kinda lost and it's so wierd here." Isabell asked nervously, the girl looked like she could have been from where Isabell lived, even though she looked slightly different and her clothes were not quite the same as the ones worn in Isabell's village. She looked quite exotic with her long green hair and crimson eyes, A dryad! she thought to herself, her mother had told her about them and she seemed to almost fit the discription. Maybe she wasn't a full dryad just half or something.

Stopping in her tracks as Isabell began to speak, Seraphina listened intently to what the half-witch was saying. Once the 13-year-old had finished her sentence, Seri grinned and began to speak. "You're telling me!" she laughed, glad to be with someone in the same situation as her. "I have no idea where we are. I agree, it is entirely peculiar. Maybe we could help eachother find some way out of this?" Then she noticed the young half-witch gazing at her, so she decided to introduce herself. "By the way, I'm Seraphina," she smiled, holding out a hand to shake, "but you can call me Seri if you like. And you are...?" She began to part her hair at the back, while awaiting the answer.

Isabell smiled "That would be good, two of us working together to try and find away out of here is better than us wandering around on our own. I'm Isabell, but my friends call me Izzy for short sometimes." Stepping slightly to the side to avoid someone jogging past them Isabell spoke again. "So where shall we start? I checked behind me, the way I came through to get here is completely gone. What about you?" She asked hopefully.

Nodding in agreement at Isabells' statement about teamwork, Seri also stepped out of the way in order to avoid the sweaty girl that jogged past. "Sorry, I checked behind me too and the portal was completely gone. There was just a lamppost in its' place." sighed Seraphina, fiddling with the strap of her backpack that was slung over her shoulder. "But there must be someone in charge of this place, in order to keep chaos from erupting. Plus whoever's in charge must be highly knowledgeable, so maybe we should seek them out. Seems like a logical deduction." As she pondered over the afore mentioned idea, she fiddled with her long green hair.

"Yeah, that sounds a good idea. Someone must know something, and the person in charge seems most likely." Isabell responded, looking around she spoke "Now where would the person in charge be?"
Like before she noticed there were many people but now most seemed to be crowded in a big square nearby, where someone was yelling passionately. Their voice echoed and people were yelling and talking between themselves mostly in agreement. "I wonder what's going on over there." Isabell said speaking her thoughts out loud. Whoever was doing the yelling seemed at least of some importance as lots of people had stopped to listen to him. "Maybe we should see what's going on." Isabell said.

Before Seraphina could reply to Isabells' question, her attention was caught by a large crowd of bustling people. One man was yelling passionately, and Seri looked over at Isabell who was speaking. In response to the 13-year-olds' last statement, Seri nodded confidently before beginning to walk towards the square. Once she reached the edge of the crowd, the young girl held her breath before diving into the crowd. Skilfully she squeezed past the many citizens, without bashing into any of them, before she reached the center where a tall, dark-haired man stood. Looking behind her, she realised that Izzy had not yet made it through so she decided to wait for her new companion before asking the man for some help.

She was startled as Seri darted off weaving in and out of the crowd. Isabell followed not far behind but was stopped as some people moved in front of her. She had to wait a moment before managing to squeeze past them and spot Seri waiting for her in the distance. She made her way over quickly managing to avoid most people even though she got one or two odd glances. Ignoring them Isabell caught up with Seraphina who had easily managed to reach the centre. The man hadn't noticed them yet he was to busy talking to other people. She was about to call out to the man when a grumpy looking man pushed past her to ask the man in the centre something. "Shouldn't you be in school" he muttered. "No, I only have lessons in the morning." Izzy replied she was confused now. The man just grunted and went back to trying to get the man's attention. "Excuse me!" Isabell tried to call out politely to the man but he didn't seem to hear her. It was very noisy with all the people talking at once.

Once Isabell had caught up with her, Seri grinned before her gaze turned to the grumpy looking man who then spoke to Isabell. Once the man had turned his back, the 11-year-old girl stuck her tongue out mischievously. "People in this world are so rude!" she muttered to herself, looking down at the ground. However when Izzy next spoke, Seri looked up and saw that the man had ignored them. Sighing, Seraphina decided to walk right up to the man and tap him on the shoulder. "Hello?" she inquired politely, as soon as the man spun round. "But could you help us please? You see, me and my friend here are a bit lost." At first the man looked shocked, but soon that expression faded as he replied to Seris' inquiry. The young girl sucked in her breath as the dark haired man was about to speak, as she felt worried as to if he would be as rude as many of the other people in the town.

Izzy stood still waiting, "Wait, wait, wait." The man said calmly yet still confused. "So you came up to me to ask? You couldn't have stopped and asked anyone else?" Well, atleast he wasn't as rude as the others Isabell thought, then the man started to laugh to himself. Or maybe not Izzy deided. "Well, we don't know anyone here and we are very far away from our homes and you seemed important so we thought maybe you could help." Isabell said making sure she stayed calm. The man stood up straighter when Izzy mentioned importance. So that's how the get to him Isabell planned. "You seemed like you knew this place as everyone seemed to be asking you questions so you must be rather intelligent and so we thought you could help us." Isabell said smilling slightly and hoping Seri caught on.

As the man laughed to himself, Seri scowled and folded her arms. 'Great, yet another rude guy.' she thought to herself, before looking across at Isabell who had begun speaking. The female half-dryads' expression changed to confusion as Izzy began to compliment the man, but fortunately it was not long before she caught on. "I agree, you do seem highly knowledgeable." she said, with a smile now appearing on her face. "Plus you seem to have a lot of control over situations as well as being extremely persuasive. You see, we thought, since you look like such an amazingly intelligent being, that the most logical deduction would be to come for you for answers. But, if you don't want to help I suppose we can go. We don't mean to intrude, right, Izzy?" She looked over at her friend that was standing beside her.
"Wait, wait.." the man suddenly said, smiling proudly at the compliments he had just received. "I suppose I could help you, since you seem like very polite girls. So you say you're lost?"

Izzy shared a triumphant glance with Seraphina, "Yes, we have no idea where we are at all." Izzy began, the crowd seemed distracted now, some had left now the speech seemed over whereas some were talking with eachother and others were watching curiously. "We just ended up here on a street nearby," Then man stopped to question them. "You just ended up there? How exactly, might I ask?" Izzy paused for a minute, what would he say about the portals? "We came through an archway and it just lead to a dark alleyway and when we turned round there was nothing there." The man seemed to be having a hard time trying to beleive this. "You mean like a portal," He said disbeleivingly. "Now tell me girls are you a big fan of video games of some sort?" Ugh, this man was so annoying! He wasn't taking them seriously at all! "We just need to know how we would get back to our worlds." The man started laughing again. Izzy almost scowled, she noticed a old man out of the corner of her eye watching them intently. He looked like he believed them, his clothes were scruffy and he didn't look wealthy at all. In Izzy's eyes he should have been in charge not this stupid guy stood in front of them now, this world was run very wierdly, that's for sure! Then man regained his composture. "I don't have time for wandering space girls from other worlds" He said jokingly. "If you'll excuse me, I have work to do" He said dismissively pushing past them.
Izzy scowled this wasn't working! He had to know something. She ran after him to stop him before he left but was pulled aside by the old man she had noticed. She stopped startled to hear what he would say.

A spark of hope lit up in Seraphinas' heart as the man began to inquire further into what had happened. However it soon faded as the man began to joke around, as if this were a silly game! As Izzy tried to get him to help, Seris' gaze was met by a scruffy old man who seemed to be watching them. A smile spread across her face before she turned back to enter the conversation, only to see the annoying man walking away from them. Then, all of a sudden, Isabell was pulled aside by the poor man that had been staring at them from a couple of feet away only a moment ago.
"Listen, girls, I think I can help you." the man told the two girls quietly, whilst placing one wrinkly hand on each of their right shoulders. "My name is Gwydion, now follow me." He took a hand each of the two girls before leading them away from the town square towards a much quieter part of town. Since she was worried about if this man truly could help him, Seri began to sweat and her palms got wet.
It was not long before the trio reached an old abandoned park, where Gwydion sat the two girls down on a bench. As an old smile spread across his crinkly face, the man sat down opposite the two girls and lay his hands face down on the table.
The cool breeze brushed across Seris' face, causing her to shiver slightly. Now the man suddenly seemed familiar, thus more familiar, so the young girl sweat no more. Instead, she smiled back at the withered old man and gazed into his dark eyes. Inside of his soul she could sense intense loneliness, and utter despair. The girl could tell that Gwydion was truly upset, most likely because someone close to him had died. Grief still haunted this man, and now Seri was eager to find out why.

Isabell was intrigued by the man yet slightly worried at where he was taking them. When they reached the park she relaxed a little. The man looked very sad, like a part of him had been taken away. Isabell opened her mouth to question him but the man spoke first. "I here your having trouble with the portals?" He inquired seriously. "Yes, we don't know how to get home. Could you help?" Isabell asked quickly and hopefully. The man spoke slowly, "Possibly, there is a way. However it is difficult finding your way in a different world." He paused for a moment thinking to himself. "If your willing to try I can help you as much as I can, I know what it's like to be lost and separated from your home." His eyes clouded up and he looked like he was remembering something.
"What happend to you?" Izzy asked softly. "Me..." He paused carefully. "I got lost when I was a young adult in my early twenties, I found another girl here who was lost aswell her name was Ffion. I tried to help her and we did find a way to get back to our seperate worlds but I got angry with her on the day before we were going to say goodbye. She ran off and was hit by one of those monsterous things on the road the people here call cars. I never forgave myself for that and I made myself stay here and help others who got lost as I failed the first time." He smiled sadly. "But if you let me help you I won't fail this time." Izzy gave him a slightly awkward but meaningful hug. "How long have you been here?" she asked. "47 years" He said sadly.

As Izzy and Gwydion talked, Seraphina listened intently to what was going on. When the old man explained what had happened to him, Seri felt his sadness and instantly wanted to cheer him up somehow. While Izzy hugged him, the 11-year-old simply patted the withered man on the shoulder. She could see tears forming in his eyes, so she decided to change the subject.
"Wait...so you've been here 47 years?" inquired Seri in a surprised voice, and Gwydion nodded slowly. "The portals have been around for that long? Woah..."
"Yes, I'm afraid so." replied Gwydion, shaking his head. "The only reason nobody knows about it is because there are so few in the world, though the number is rapidly increasing." He sighed, before continuing. "However no portal ever disappears naturally. It only seems that way because it's position moves. Normally there is a pattern in the way it moves, which is how we can track it down. But, first things first, I need to know the exact location of the portals you went through so I can plot the co-ordinates. So, will you show me?" Looking over at Izzy, Seraphina nodded before standing up and beginning to walk out of the park, with Gwydion following behind her.

Izzy followed them, back past the street where the rude man had been. It was empty now and only a few people were left, walking to where ever they were going. When they reached the point where Izzy had first met Seraphina she smiled. Seri was leading Gwydion to where her portal lead to when she first ended up here so Izzy memorized in her head which alleyway she had run down when she first arrived. It wasn't far from here Isabel was sure of that, and it was definately along the road they were taking now. She stopped when they went past her alleyway she recognised it from the weird sprayed pattern on one of the walls at the side. "Oh!" She said quickly. "Down at the very end of that alleyway where the brick wall is was where my portal was." She pointed out quickly to Gwydion and Seri.

Carefully, Seraphina retraced her steps and led Gwydion towards her portal. However she stopped in her tracks as Izzy called over to the pair and said that her portal was there. She followed the old man as he walked over to the 13-year-old, before bending down and taking out a map from his satchel. He opened it up on the ground, before working out where they were and writing down the co-ordinates of that point in a battered notebook. After nodding and checking it over, Gwydion got up before turning back to Seri. Smiling, the young girl went back out of the alleyway and continued leading the other two towards the place that her portal had once been. Arriving at a lamppost, she stopped and pointed at it. "There." she said bluntly. "That's where I came through." Once more Gwydion nodded, before repeating the same process as he had done with Izzys' portal.
Rubbing his aching back, the battered man stood up and stretched. "Well, I suppose we had better head to my home." he yawned, reaching up to the sky before relaxing his body and shrugging his shoulders. "Gosh, I'm getting old! Maybe I should exercise a bit more." Muttering to himself and sighing, Gwydion then began to wander off. Quickly Seri scuttled along behind him, eager to see what his home would be like.

Izzy followed letting Gwydion lead the way. The streets went on forever and were all the same dull grey in colour. Eventually they made thier way onto some smaller streets more like the ones from her small village and into a large open field. At the other side of the field was a couple of rundown buildings that didn't look that nice from the outside even though they were large in size. "Well, this is it." Gwydion said whilst unbolting the large wooden door. Izzy looked around, the inside wasn't that bad actually. The house was really just one big room. There was a kitchen type space with a small cooker and some work tops with some pots and pans on top of them at one side of the room. In the far corner of the room was an old bed. The floor was quite nicely carpetted even if it was a little rough around the edges. The floor and walls were fairly clean apart from the fact the floor was covered in old newspaper cuttings, notebooks and various other contraptions. "Its pretty basic, but it has everything I need. The bathroom is through there." He spoke pointing to the door at the back of the room. "As you can see," he continued "I write down most of my research on portals, this knowledge is very important."
Isabell looked around curiously. "I'll get you two some blankets to sleep on, I think i'm sure I still have that old matress" he said looking around the room. "Aha!" he exclaimed moving a load of papers and maps in on corner of the room. "Here it is" He called as he slowly pulled it out. Izzy ran over to help.

While the others heaved the mattress out, Seraphina gazed around the room. Assuming that Izzy and Gwydion would be alright on their own, she took off her backpack and put it down near the door before wandering over to the kitchen area. Gently she eased on the cold tap and splashed some cool water in her face, before letting out a sigh of refreshment. "Would you like me to prepare any food?" she inquired politely, turning round to the other two.
"Well I haven't got much food at the moment for you to prepare, I'm afraid." sighed Gwydion, wiping his brow. "But you can make something with what I've got if you're hungry. I'm not though, so don't feed me anything." Letting out a deep breath, he sat down on the mattress and lay back comfortably.
"Okay then," replied Seri, before turning to the half-witch, "what about you, Izzy? Do you want anything?"

Izzy walked over to where Seri was after putting down the matress. "Ok that sounds nice but I don't need too much food." She put her backpack on the floor and began walking around the room looking at the stuff on the floor and reading one or two of the notes. Gwydion sighed from where he lay on the matress still. "Ahh... This is good for my back." Izzy stopped and turned to face him. "Does your back hurt often?" She enquired. "Only after i've been walking for a while, it's just old age. Makes my back ache from leaning over thats all." He said simply. "I could make something to help your back." Izzy said helpfully. Gwydion just looked at her. "It's true my mother taught me, its quite a simple potion for aches and pains you just rub it on the area when it hurts and it eases the pain. It doesn't need much ingredients and I have an old bottle to keep it in and a few of the ingredients in my bag anyway. "Well, tomorrow I just might have to take you up on that offer." Gwydion replied. Izzy smiled happily before wandering some more.
"So, what's your universe like?" Izzy asked conversationally once she had wandered back to where Seri was making some food.

Standing on her tiptoes, Seri reached up and opened a cupboard door. Out from it she got a nearly empty packet of bread, a Tupperware box of lettuce and tomatoes and some cheese. Then she pulled open a drawer and took out a knife as well as a couple of plates and a cheese grater. Then she took out the last four slices of bread from the packet and began making two sandwiches. As she did so, Izzy came over and asked her a question.
"Well, I suppose it's hard to describe..." replied Seri, scratching her head in thought. "Everyone there is very welcoming and polite, as well as looking a bit more...colourful than the people here. Some people there have magical talents, such as I have the power of telepathy but it is not that strong yet. About half the world is human, and half of it is a mix of other species such as dryads, witches and water nymphs. I don't really know what else to say..." She trailed off towards the end, before asking; "What about your universe? What's that like?"
After that, Seri cut the two sandwiches in half before putting two halves on each plate. Then she picked up one of the plates and went over to the mattress where she sat down next to Gwydion and began eating.

Izzy took her plate and sat with Seri and Gwydion. "Well there aren't many big cities, mostly just small villages like mine and a few bigger towns where we gather at for market day. Like your universe there are all sorts of people in my village aswell. Like my father is human and my mother is a witch. Most of my friends have bright hair colours aswell and my eyes also go orange at night, they're probably turning orange at the moment. I also have the power of invisibility but it doesn't always work when I want it to yet." Isabell finished explaining some of her universe. She sat and ate her sandwich. "mmm this is good. Thanks Seri" She said happily. "so what's the plan for tomorrow?"

"Yes," Gwydion agreed, pulling himself up from the matress. "I almost forgot, there are some spare blankets over here." he said whilst picking up some blankets from he corner of the room. "Here you go. You two can have the matress to yourselves." He said tiredly, lying down on his bed at the other side of the large room.
Izzy yawned and layed down on one side of the matress with one of the blankets, " Good night." She yawned pulling the blanket around her. She was too tired to properly get ready for bed but it wasn't like she had brought stuff like her pijamas or toothbrush. It didn't take long for her to get to sleep sh was worn out and tomorrow would be very busy.

After taking off her jacket and her shoes, Seraphina lay down next to Izzy and pulled her blanket up around her. Her eyes shut tight and she snuggled under the duvet. Although she was completely worn out, the young girl could not get to sleep. As the town began to drift off to sleep, Seri could only toss and turn on the mattress. Around midnight, she had had enough. It wasn't the same in this universe, and the half-dyad knew she would never get to sleep that night. Sitting up in bed, she wiped her face with her hands before gently pulling back the blanket and standing up silently. Looking across at her friend, Seri saw that the 13-year-old was sleeping soundly.
Sighing miserably to herself, the green-haired girl put on her jacket and shoes, picked up her rucksack, and tiptoed out of the door before closing it quietly behind her, being careful not to wake anyone. Once outside, she sat down and took out her ukulele and her notebook from her bag. Then she began to play the tune that she had earlier scrawled down, while mumbling the lyrics to herself.

Izzy yawned and stretched, it must have only been very early on in the morning as pale but bright light was coming in through the gaps in the dark curtains that covered the few windows. There wasn't really a point in going back to sleep as she felt rested enough and the probably needed all the time they could get today. Once her eyes had adjusted to the room she realised that Seri was no longer next to her, she looked around the room then knocked on the door to the bathroom. Empty she realised.
