At barely 11 years old, Adelaide is one of the youngest crew members aboard the Pioneer I. Don't let her slight size or cute face fool you. Adelaide's a little pack of dynamite.
Adelaide is just entering that awkward stage between child and adult. She's grown up quickly, especially since she was chosen for the Pioneer Program. She still has outbursts of child-like exuberance, but then she feels embarrassed about it because everyone around her seems so much more mature. She takes pride in the skills she does have though, and can occasionally be accused of cockiness. She just knows she's the best at what she does, and she revels in it since she feels lacking in all other aspects. Adelaide generally views life aboard the ship as one grand adventure.
Adelaide has a program-issued computer and reader, since she's technically considered to still be schooling in all subjects. As for runner equipment, Adelaide prefers a bow and a dart gun, although she is also adept with a bola, guns, and lasers.
Adelaide was born and raised in the nearly-dead mining town of Pocahontas, Virginia, USA. The town's booming coal mines were used up long ago, but they did maintain several museums and historic places that sometimes brought tourists to the area. Not much, though. Raised Appalachian through-and-through, Adelaide learned hunting and tracking at her father's knee. Often times, the only food they had was whatever they managed to hunt or forage in the mountains.
Adelaide was a natural. Her parents had hopes for greatness. They really wanted their daughter to have a way out of their poor, rural life. The saved up until they could buy her a proper bow, and at the age of seven, Adelaide began competing in archery contests. She became a common sight among the children's circuit and brought home several trophies - as well as quite a bit in prize money. It was at the regional championships in her ninth year when Adelaide caught the eyes of the program recruiters. By this time, she had also learned a few good tricks and was teaching classes to other children. She was, quite frankly, the bread-winner in her family. The recruiters offered her parents enough money that they could start over in a better town, and offered Adelaide training and income that would see her set for life.
It was hard to say goodbye to her family and to everything she'd ever known, but Adelaide was excited about the prospect of being a space pioneer. She was already quite skilled with bow and arrow, dart guns, and a bola. The Pioneer Program taught her about different guns and lasers. An expert marksman, she caught on quickly, though it did take her longer than most to learn how to take a gun apart, clean it, and put it back together properly. The physical training was quite rigorous, but she held her own admirably, given her small size. She was slower to learn martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, but she was placed with a mentor who was also slight in size, and eventually her fighting improved. Adelaide, because of her small stature, is particularly useful for getting into and out of small places. She has very little fear, be it of animals, small spaces, other fighters, or space itself.
