"You lost so fast you... probably shouldn't have done that."

a character in “Pokémon: Dangerous Lives”, as played by Iward103

Description

Name: Joshua Harsh

Image

Description: Joshua Harsh is, by all standards, average. Not too tall or too short, nor too fat or overly muscular, he is the perfect John Doe. Having been an artist before deciding to get his first Pokemon, he normally dresses in what he would define as 'simple fashion'. Black slacks and a white button-up shirt, a black or blue vest with a tie, and black or brown leather shoes depending on the day. All in all, he doesn't stand out in how he dresses, which doesn't help his complete blandness, appearance-wise. The only part of Josh's appearance that makes him in any way unusual or sets him apart at all are the white gloves he wears and the cigarettes he smokes. Having been a chain smoker since he first turned 13, he has recently taken to rolling his own unfiltered cigarettes to save money, and will often keep one in his mouth, unlit, for minutes before he remembers to light it.

Age: 20
Sex: Male
DOB: 10/03/1995
Birthplace: Pewter City
Height: 68 inches
Weight: 179 lbs
Hair Color: Dark brown to black
Eye Color: Green
Body Type: Mesomorph
Voice Type: Bass

Starting Pokémon: Squirtle

Legendary Pokémon: Raikou
Personality: Joshua is the kind of person who doesn't suffer idiots quietly. Actually, he does't suffer anything quietly, never managing to shut his mouth. Joshua values common sense and intelligence, but finds them qualities that aren't often present in other people. Sarcastic to a fault, and then another fault, until the sarcasm-quake kills everyone with sarcastic-tectonic shifts, he will find an opening and then mercilessly abuse his ill-witted target until they lie sobbing in a pool of their own tears. Perhaps it was his upbringing, or the fact that his artist-mind is predisposed to colorful vocabulary and creative insults. Maybe, in the end, its his way of getting back at the world for its cruel ways. Regardless, he enjoys being a jerk, at least on the surface. Not many people have gotten underneath that surface, and fewer still understand how he works.

Despite his sarcasm and mean behavior, he is a natural artist and teacher. If a person shows aptitude and talent, Joshua is more than willing to share what he knows, whether that applies to art, life or just general wisdom. Josh has a teacher's heart, buried deep beneath the sarcasm and possible hate he has for the world. He takes deep pride and satisfaction from spreading knowledge, even if he attributes it to 'leaving less idiots in my wake'. Besides his love of teaching, he can get easily distracted by things that are amusing, attractive, or otherwise interesting. As a story he sometimes tells goes, he was hit three times by three separate cars on his home one day, only attributing it to a Pokemon he couldn't identify. Needless to say, people who don't know him can say he is a bit scatterbrained, which is not inaccurate.

Strengths: Self Reliant, Quick Witted, Slow to Anger
Weaknesses: Judgmental, Sarcastic, Easily Distracted

Biography: Joshua Harsh was born October 3rd, 1995, to Mike and Miriam Harsh. After a week of being a parent, Miriam decided being a mother was too much for her and she promptly left (eventually her body was found on Mount Moon, having jumped to her death from a cliff). When Joshua was 3, his father Mike Harsh got him a paint set, and Joshua fell in love with art. No crayons or pencils or markers would be enough for him, he always wanted to paint. Being raised just as much by his father as a sitter, he had ample time to perfect his craft. His father, meanwhile, fell in love with another man. Keeping this a secret for some time, Joshua didn't find out his father was gay until he was thirteen years old.

On his thirteenth birthday Joshua finally decided to ask Mike, whom he had never called 'father' or 'dad', who his 'friend' was. At that point, his father explained to Josh that he was gay, that his mother had been a very elaborate cover story, and that Joshua had been the product of blackmail. He accepted this about as well as anyone would, which is to say he started to hate his father. Joshua buried himself in his school work, and even more so into his art. This was the age at which he first tried smoking. Joshua bought his cigarettes from a senior at the highschool he went to, a girl by the name of Cassie who by all standards should have been expelled long beforehand. The only thing they had in common was art, and they became good friends, and an odd pair to see. Despite this friendship, being alienated from his father hindered Joshua more than he would admit.

In Josh's senior year of highschool, things went downhill pretty badly. His father was on the receiving end of a bad breakup, and then Joshua went to his second funeral: that of his father. Apparently, his father couldn't handle being rejected for a second time, and promptly killed himself, in the same manner and location as Josh's mother. For months, Josh barely survived his schooling, and he quit painting all-together. Right as Josh started getting his life back together, another problem hit, in the form of Cassie. The news came in the form of a newspaper, of all things. Cassie had been arrested for drunkenly assaulting a police officer, and was set to be in jail for a few years. Josh buried himself into his art, once again. At long last Joshua graduated, ready to start his adult life, prepared to set out on his own, as an artist. As a man.

So begins...

Joshua stepped off the plane, pulling a pair of sunglasses out of his breast-pocket to shield his eyes from the day's light. It had been a year since Joshua had been in Kanto, and it was odd being back. The entire region had an odd feel to it, as if it were just mysterious enough to catch his interest, but not fascinating enough to hold it for very long. Joshua knew that today would be important, somehow. He had already decided which Pokemon he wanted, a Squirtle. It would be a trusty partner, one that Josh hoped would share his interest in the finer things of life.

Putting the bag on his shoulder as he was exiting the airport, Joshua reached into his pants-pocket and pulled out a plastic case, and from inside he drew a single unfiltered cigar. Setting it in his mouth, he looked around. Pallet town was exactly as he expected it to be. Although he had never been here before, it all seemed familiar because of the correspondence he had shared with the Professor. It wasn't a huge city, but it wasn't too small either, just the sort of place were stories began. "Perhaps", Joshua thought, "This could be the place my story starts."

About halfway to the Pokemon Center, Josh remembered that he had a cigarette in his mouth. Stopping for a moment to mentally kick himself, he pulled out a Zippo lighter, flicked it open with a well-practiced wrist motion, and then light his cigarette. Inhaling the smoke, Josh considered for a moment if his Pokemon would have a problem with the second-hand smoke. He didn't expect much of a problem, but if worst came to worst Josh could cut back on his habit... maybe.

The Professor's lab quickly loomed down on Joshua, and after seeing a 'no-smoking' sign he took a moment to finish the last few drags of his cigarette before entering into the building.

"Professor? Are you here?" Josh said, looking around and watching as aids wandered back and forth, hauling books and equipment and other things that were at the moment irrelevant to Joshua.

"Mr. Harsh, it seems you are earlier than expected." The professor replied, walking up from behind a bookshelf. "I was not expecting you so soon, after your last letter..."

"That's what my last girlfriend said... but I digress. You said you've got a Squirtle for me? One that you think will fit my personality?"

"Pokemon aren't machines to be tailored to people, Mr. Harsh. They are creatures, living and breathing beings. But yes, I do think this one will suit you quite... nicely." The professor replied, pulling out a Pokeball and handing it to Joshua.

"Go ahead, say hello to your new partner." The professor said, folding his arms behind his back and waiting.

Joshua released the Pokemon from the Pokeball, and waited. Out came a small, turtle-like being, with blue skin and a face that only a mother-turtle could love.

"Squirtle... squirt squirtle." The pokemon said, glaring at Harsh with barely controlled hostility.

"I thought you said he would match my personality 'nicely', Professor. Not glare at me with thinly veiled hatred."

"Funny, I don't recall saying that... now out, out. I wouldn't want you two to destroy my lab, not after the last incident with the Pikachu..." The professor said, the later part more to himself than to anyone else, as he herded both Joshua and Squirtle out of the lab.

"Take these pokeballs, and if anything happens, please, hesitate to ask." The professor replied, seemingly happy to be rid of this malice-filled Pokemon.

Joshua glared at the Squirtle, and it glared back, each matching the other's gaze for what could have been an eternity. Then, without warning, the Squirtle spit a small stream of water at Joshua's head. The stream wasn't powerful, not on par with an actual attack by any means, but Joshua got the idea. The Squirtle didn't like him, and he didn't like the Squirtle.

"Look, you little jerk, you belong to me now. Get it? It isn't my problem you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. If you do that again, you'll be soup. And not even good soup." Joshua said, getting on eye level with the Squirtle, as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it. With agility that rivaled that of an angry toddler, Squirtle snatched the cigarette from Josh's mouth and started, to Joshua's great astonishment, smoking it.

"You... you... you've got to be kidding me." Joshua stuttered, completely off-put by this turn of events.

"Squirt, squirtle squirt." The small Pokemon responded, in what Joshua could only assume was a smug manner, before coughing on the smoke.

"Fine, Soup. You want to smoke, you can walk. We're heading for Viridian city, and that means we're walking up route one." Josh said, shouldering the bag that he had been carrying in one hand since exiting the Lab.

"Squirtle *cough* squirt!" Soup replied, initially not following Josh as he walked away. A few seconds passed before Soup waddled after his new master.

After walking a ways out of town and smoking another cigarette (this time not stolen by Soup), Josh heard some speaking up ahead. Not wanting to interrupt, he approached but didn't say anything, waiting for the two ladies to finish their conversation before introducing himself. Instead, Joshua lit a second cigarette and handed it to Soup, who surprisingly took it in stride. Soup accepted the cigarette and smoked it in the same manner as Joshua, albeit slightly less dexterously due to his lack of fingers.

"Great." Joshua thought, "I've got the only Squirtle who smokes as much as I do."

Yuu observed the map as Miki explained it to her. "I see," she said. "I wouldn't mind a bit of sight seeing on the way there. It could be fun." She smiled as Miki put the map away. Listening to her once again, Yuu nodded every so often. When Miki mentioned being from Jhoto, Yuu's eyes lit up. "Oh, Johto? I'm from there too! Violet City, to be exact. But my family moved to Kalos eventually and that's where I lived for the rest of my childhood." She shifted her weight on her legs, her left knee bent a little each time weight was put on it to relieve stress. Her crippled shin was a little weaker than her other leg.

"I wouldn't mind heading there with you. It seems like it would be a nice experience if Fennekin and I went along with some others." She looked down at her fox Pokemon, who was happily running back and forth from the side of the road to where they were standing, creating a small pile of twigs in front of the Charmander. She let out a little chuckle. "He's usually so skittish, but I guess he's happy he followed you out here."

Soon enough, the Fennekin's ears twitched and he hesitated in mid stride with a few twigs in his mouth. He looked toward two newcomers. A Squirtle and who seemed to be his trainer. Yuu caught her Pokemon's abrupt halt and followed his gaze to see the stranger with the Squirtle. And she squinted in confusion when she noticed the Squirtle with a cigarette in its mouth. Fennekin didn't seem to mind at all. He dropped the twigs and trotted over to sniff the Squirtle and the man that accompanied it.

Miki was pleased that Yuu agreed to travel with her. It would make the time pass so much faster.

But then she noticed that Fennekin running over to a Squirtle with... a... cigarette?

Miki was more than a little shocked to see the Squirtle smoking a cigarette. Honestly it was more than a little put off by it. The sight of a Pokemon smoking a cigarette was so foreign. It was... almost aggravating to see something like that. But it was not her Pokemon so she didn't really have much of a place to speak.

... Still...

Miki chose to remain silent as she observed the Squirtle and its cigarette.

"'Yo." Joshua said, looking at the two people and their Pokemon. "Trainers..." Joshua thought, considering the idea of a battle but quickly dismissing it. Soup probably knew only one offensive move, and even if he was a water type, he and Soup wouldn't have a great chance at the moment.

Soup looked back and forth between the new people and Pokemon, hesitantly waddling up to the Fennekin. "Squirt?"

"My name's Joshua. This is Soup. Well, only if he misbehaves, that is." Joshua said, giving a sideways glance at the water-type pokemon.

"Squirt? Squirtle!" Soup retorted, angrily returning the glace with what seemed to be an unspoken threat. Joshua could only assume Soup was cursing at him.

"Shut it, or you're the entrée." Josh said, smiling devilishly, right before ducking a torrent of water not quite strong enough to cause serious damage. Soup stuck his tongue out, mocking Joshua.

"As you can see, our partnership is... a work in progress. What're your names, if I may ask?" Joshua spoke with as much sincerity as he could muster, which elicited something between a laugh and a grunt from Soup.

Fennekin bounced around the new Pokemon. he ran back and forth between the Charmander and the Squirtle, starting to drop twigs in front of them. Yuu watched him for a moment, still confused by his odd behavior. She looked back up at Joshua.

"My name is Yuu," she said. "And that is... well, Fennekin. I haven't named him." She clasped her hands together in front of her chest. Her Fennekin barked in a high pitched tone, confirming that Yuu was right. He then plopped down in a random place and started scratching behind his ears again.

Yuu rocked back and forth on her feet and looked between Miki and Joshua. She then looked at Soup, her nose scrunching a little as the smell of cigarette smoke tickled her senses. Although she wasn't very accepting of smokers, she stayed quiet. "Are you heading to Viridian City as well?"

Miki couldn't get over the Squirtle's cigarette. How and why would it be doing something like that? Did it really, despite its seeming distaste for its Trainer, have the same personality? Miki didn't have any answers. Only questions. It was so foreign to see something that she saw as an animal, a pet, a companion to be smoking a cigarette. So unnatural.

She just couldn't get over it.

But she saw more in the end than just that. There was a bond beginning to form. The two argued like siblings, in a way. Perhaps there was more to their pairing than she originally thought? The professor wouldn't have gifted him the Squirtle if he didn't think there was a good reason to put them together. She trusted the professor, so she decided not to question the relationship these two had. She still didn't like the Squirtle smoking like that, but it was not her Pokémon so she had no right to judge.

Instead, she shook it off as best she could and gave the pair a small bow.

"My name is Miki Saegusa. It's a pleasure to meet you both." She said pleasantly.

Blaze was curious about the cigarette as well but made no moves to investigate. He was going to stay with his Trainer.

Fennekin looked at Soup, and then at the cigarette it had tossed to the ground and had spit on. He sniffed it, and then out of nowhere, let a small flurry of flame out of his mouth and set the discarded cigarette on fire. It wasn't a big enough flame to cause any trouble.

"What was that? It smelled funny! Like smoke!" Fennekin yipped back at Soup.

Yuu looked at Miki when Joshua asked to travel with them. She was sure they were both older than her by a few years. It was something she learned while growing up; younger people had no right to make decisions for anyone else. That didn't mean it was what everyone believed though. Personally, she didn't mind. She looked down a the Pokemon. It seemed like they were talking to each other. But about what? There was a tiny flame on the ground where the Squirtle tossed the cigarette. Yuu looked up at Joshua.

"I suppose you could," she said quietly. "Though I'm not entirely sure if it's my decision to make."

"A stick of smoke? How bizarre." Blaze remarked as he observed the cigarette.

Miki, in the meantime, looked to Joshua.

"I don't have any real objections to you coming with us." Miki said.

She looked back to the Squirtle for a moment but then let out a soft sigh.

"Anyway, I think it'd be best if we got moving. Night falls fast in this area due to the mountains and the tree line. We should move ahead and see if we can find a good place to set up camp for the night." She suggested.

Yuu nodded in agreement. She took off her backpack and took out a jacket. it wasn't very cold out, but since it was nearing the evening, it was presumably going to get colder. She put her backpack back on and tied the jacket around her waist for better accessibility. "I'm excited," she said. "I wonder if we'll be lucky enough to meet any new Pokemon."

At her statement, Fennekin's ears perked up. He was loosening up a bit since they were away from a crowded area. "New Pokemon? New Pokemon!?" He bounced up and down a few times, squeaking happily. "Yes! New friends!" Fennekin jumped around Yuu's feet and she giggled a little at the sight.

"You're especially hyper today, I wonder what's gotten into you. You're never like this." Fennekin put his front paws on her leg and she picked him up carefully. Instead of staying still, he squirmed around and climbed onto her shoulder. He was a little too big for her shoulder though, so he supported his back paws on the backpack she had on. He put his front paws on her head, and Yuu touched her knees together to keep her balance. It might not have seemed so difficult to support the twenty pound fox, but it was actually pretty uncomfortable for her neck.

"And you've never done that before either," Yuu said quietly.

It was a frazzled Aria that got of the boat in Pallet Town. While it had admittedly been a nice ride, being more of a small cruise ship than anything, the company left something to be desired. Not the crew, they were flawless, but the other passengers were rather... eccentric...

It wasn't that she didn't have a good night's sleep -despite her 'noisy' neighbours-, as her antiquated Ipod drowned out most of the noise. She was truly grateful towards the small piece of technology, a memento of when she still lived in Lumiose City. But back to the topic on hand: It was just... Everything onboard kept her on her toes. By Arceus, she didn't even get the peace she needed to read, and she could ignore quite a lot when she was off in her own world.

So yes, despite realizing it was probably the most luxurious part of the trip she would get for a while, she was glad to be on solid ground again.

Pallet Town wasn't overly large and it was relatively easy to navigate. So with the directions she asked from a dock worker, she made it to the laboratory. It was rather quiet when she got there, was she late? She hoped not.

She knocked on the door, but didn't hesitate to walk in, as it was slightly ajar. It seemed to be empty of human life.

"Uhm... Good afternoon, is someone there?"

She startled when a man suddenly stood up from behind his desk. "Yes", he chuckled, "Someone is here."

Ah... This really wasn't good for her heart it seemed.

Nevertheless, after she had composed herself again, she asked him, "Are you the professor I was supposed to meet?"

He raised an eyebrow, "I assume I am, as otherwise you'd be very, very lost..."

She flushed again, what was up with this man? Why couldn't he just give straight answers.

"I came here to get my partner, a Chikorita, professor Leingod.", she said plainly, trying to not let his demeanor affect her. It wasn't working very well though.

He waved it off, "Yes. Yes, one Chikorita coming up."

Aria flushed, this time out of anger. She had been around her sister's pokemon long enough to know they were every bit as sentient as you and I. To hear him be this dismissive about entrusting a young one to someone he barely knew... It was criminal.

The professor stilled, "Ahaha... Forgive me, it seems I took the joke too far... You do seem rather easy to tease though, and I couldn't help myself..."

"Either way, let's not dally in getting you your pokemon."

She followed him to the back of the room silently. After watching him move around for a while, he came back with a pokeball. He pressed the button, and the red light escaping it formed itself into a Chikorita. The pokemon looked up to her with curious eyes and approached her. The Chikorita gave her an imperious sniff, before apparently deeming her worthy and trotting to her side.

Aria was a bit overwhelmed by all of this, but just as she was about to voice this, professor Leingod spoke up.

"Don't worry", he said, "While this pokemon might seem a bit mean at first" -at this the Chikorita send the professor an affronted look- "She can be a real cutie once she gets to know you". The affronted look -if anything- grew, and despite herself Aria found herself barely holding back a chuckle.

After this she was soon hostled out by the professor, who claimed he wanted to join his assistants for their belated lunch. The entire encounter had left her a bit off-kilter, and awkwardly she glanced down at the Chikorita.

"Shall we head out then?"

The Chikorita began trotting towards the entrance of Route 1.

"An answer if I ever saw one...", she muttered to herself, before starting to follow after the leisurely walking pokemon. It wasn't that hard to catch up, seeing how she had longer legs. She pulled a book from her back as she was catching up, and after a few minutes of reading she absentmindedly asked, "Would you like a name?", and after a moment of deliberation, the Chikorita nodded.

"How about Lily?", she asked, but Chikorita shook her head. The next names she thought up were met with the same fate.

As they continued, they eventually saw a group up ahead. Aria hesitated, should she go talk with them?

Miki was feeling pretty relaxed by this point in time and was rapidly warming up to her new companions. The Squirtle smoking still had her wondering about a few things, but otherwise she was ready to move on.

She gathered her stuff and made sure she and Blaze were set to head out before beginning to wander down the path. Blaze trotted along happily at her side and kept a lookout for nearby Pokémon. She kept an eye out as well and was eager to find her first one. The Professor told her that she had to battle and weaken them first, so that meant sending Blaze into combat. She wasn't really a fan of the idea, but at the same time it was just how things worked.

Battling would be scary, but Blaze seemed ready for it so she had to put her faith in him if and when it came down to it.

She walked slowly down Route 1's path hoping the others were keeping up. Night was already beginning to fall with the sky turning a faint orange hue as the sun began to set beyond the horizon through the trees. Finding a good campsite would be priority 1 very soon. Miki wasn't really one for camping so she'd have to ask the others to scout a spot for them.

Chikorita impatiently poked Aria in the side with a vine whip. Aria winced. While the strength used in the action was undoubtedly gentle by pokemon standards, that was definitely going to leave a bruise on her human self. She didn't vocalize this though, as it seemed Chikorita had already picked up on her discomfort by her facial expression.

Unknown to the girl, this visible reaction strengthened the pokemon's resolve. This human might be a weakling, but the professor had said the human was hers, so she might as well make sure no harm befell her. It had absolutely nothing to do with Aria's tender expressions and the admittedly delightful dried berry mix the girl had given Chikorita while waiting for the professor to finish the last formalities. Even the professor must have been jealous, as he had claimed to want lunch soon after and rudely hostled them out!

Aria in the meantime, having made a decision, picked the thinking Chikorita up to Chikorita's momentarily distress. It soon faded though, and the pokemon made herself comfortable. She might even get used to this, free rides!

Aria had made a decision and made her way to the group, and greeted them.

"Good evening, did you just meet your partners at professor Leingod's too?"

Aria shifted a little, though taking care not to jostle Chikorita to much. Had that been too direct? She hoped not...

Fennekin seemed to enjoy riding on Yuu. It did slow her down a bit, since she had an odd walking pattern due to her crippled leg. She limped oddly. It wasn't just any limp, it caused her to sway slightly as she walked. Fennekin didn't seem to notice, as he was busy looking around at the tall trees. Yuu held the straps to her backpack as she followed Miki and Joshua. Though upon hearing someone's voice, she looked behind herself just as Fennekin bounced back to the ground and trotted over to an adorable Chikorita to say hello.

"Hello! What is your name? Did your trainer give you a name? Do you like twigs?" He was happily bouncing around.

"Oh, hello there," she said, "I've actually had my Fennekin for about five days. I flew in from Kalos this afternoon with him."

Miki's head turned just in time to see a new arrival. It was another young woman with long silver hair. She was quite lovely, Miki had to admit.

She smiled warmly at the girl.

"I have indeed just gotten my Charmander, whom I've named Blaze, from Professor Leingod this morning."

Miki gave the girl a polite bow.

"My name is Miki Saegusa. It's a pleasure to meet you." She said.

Chikorita jumped out of her trainers arms. She was a bit taken aback by the energetic nature of her fellow pokemon but nevertheless replied, "Hmm, vines are better, although I guess I can see why one would be attracted to twigs."

Aria smiled upon hearing that one of the other girls was from Kalos. "I used to live in Kalos too until I was seven. Lumiose City to be exact. It was a bit of a culture shock when we moved to Cerulean City for my father's job though."

"As for the name, My human has been trying to find one I like for the past few hours, but has only just cottoned in to the fact that I don't like flower names, so she hasn't been succesful yet. My mother has named me 'Leaf dancing to a summer's breeze' [Chikorita], but that would be a bit of a mouthful when translated to their silly human speech though. Has your human given you a new one yet?"

"Anyway, it's nice to see a Kalosian and her Fennekin here. You too, Saegusa-san, Blaze, and your silent companion and his partner ofcourse."

She felt a bit bad that she was adressing someone standing next to her in the third person, even while a bit put out that the boy in question seemed to be ignoring her.

"I'm Aria d'Argo. It's a pleasure to meet all of you too."

The duo slowly crept up on the tall reed area, and sure enough a few Poliwag came into view. Zane watched the group for a few minutes, secretly glad that he was downwind from the group so he could watch in peace. This allowed him to pick out one in particular - one that didn't seem overly active or idle to be his catch. Zane picked up Crush to point out his quarry.

"According to the professor you know Curse so you can more reliably move heavy loads and take hits. While Im not sure how it works, the name sounds like you pay something for it - so Crush sneak up on that one and Curse Tackle to drive it over here. Then I'll catch it, finally we'll head back closer towards the main road before setting up camp for the night. After thinking on it, Im not comfortable removing two Pokemon from this part of the ecosystem." Zane placed Crush down and it slowly crept towards the Poliwag he'd set his sites on. When it got close enough, he saw Crush twitch a bit as if it was experiencing some discomfort before it began moving stiffer than before. Just when he began to wonder the ramifications of his order, Crush moved into action and forcefully leaped over the smaller Poliwag before tackling right into it. The Poliwag ended up rolling towards Zane from the collision while the others scattered and responded with a burst of water from its mouth while Crush again bowled into the Pokemon - seemingly unbothered by the water. As the Poliwag seemed to struggle up from its back from the previous collision Zane threw an empty Pokeball from his belt and hit the Pokemon. He unconsciously held his breath until the Pokemon confirmed a complete capture, at which point he strode forward and retrieved the ball - putting it on his wrist next to Crush's.

"You're the best buddy, you need anything? It looked like that woulda hurt quite a bit from my view point." In response, Crush shook its head, and Zane wasn't going to call it on being a tough guy while it walked back towards him. " In that case, I'll have you rest up until I set up camp and prepare dinner. Zane stated while returning the Mudkip to its Pokeball. He quickly dashed back to his bag, and finding it undisturbed, put it back on and secured the pack to his body before setting off with as much he could manage back towards the main road - even drawing a light out on the way. Given his previous route had been more off the main road than further in, he found himself emerging not too far from a group of what he assumed to be teenagers. The Ranger (in training) honestly found it a little odd for the kids to be out at this hour - after all they were too close to town to honestly consider camping. Especially with the location being rather unsuited for such a thing. From what he recalled, they'd need to walk another mile or seven if they wanted a good spot.

The more he thought about, the worse the expression on Zane's already less than friendly face as he made his way towards the group. As he grew closer and the light he'd originally mistook as a fire turned out to be a Charmander, Zane slowed...rookie trainers actually made sense. In Ranger Academy it was actually joked that without a good map (i.e. one that read itself with GPS directions) rookie trainers could waste an entire day discussing just where they were going - assuming they could even figure out where they were if they could even figure that out. Zane's expression softened at this, but his natural visage still left him far from friendly looking when he got within shouting distance.

" You kids lost?" Zane shouted to get his voice across the remaining distance while switching his hand land around enough to help illuminate his uniform in the low light. Given the state of his team, if the kids ran he couldn't give much chase - but if they were honestly lost he saw no reason to not offer a hand.

Miki gave another light bow of her head to their new arrival, miss Aria.

"The pleasure is mine," she said earnestly.

Not long after listening to miss Aria make introductions Miki heard a shout from nearby. When she turned, she saw a rather imposing figure approaching them. But when she thought about his question, she could only smile.

As he approached to within a range for her to speak instead of shout, she answered his question.

"Actually, we are far from lost good sir." She said with a light bow of her head.

"I've lived here for the past two years or so, and I know the area rather well. If you were to ask me that between Viridian City and Pewter City, I'd have a different answer for you. But at the moment we were just preparing to move on and find a suitable camp ground to spend the night. If you'd like to accompany us you're welcome to as far as I'm concerned. The more the merrier, as they say." She said as she offered him a sweet smile.

Aria looked in the direction of -was that a ranger?- the man that had asked if they were lost right after she finished introducing herself. After Miki had finished talking, she replied.

I don't know about the others", she replied cheerfully, "But I'm exactly where I want to be."

She send the others a guilty look, "That is, if you guys would allow me to camp with you in the spot you'll choose." Something she hadn't gotten around to asking yet.

But what she had said was still true. She thought of this rough area as a good place to camp out on her first night. Not only were they close to a town, which meant the pokemon population was not nearly as thick as it could be, but they would also have the advantage of being in a group.

She knew their current location was far from perfect for camping -aside from being close to rather clean water-, but she figured she might as well get the practice in and get used to unfavourable conditions, as she would have to survive in much worse places and circumstances at some point.

As the man came closer she was able to take in his features. Hmm, he wasn't the prettiest pea in the pod, but she still though him quite handsome under all of those scars. And even with those it wasn't too bad. It gave him a rugged look.

'Wait, where had that thought even come from?'

She really wasn't the type of girl to go googoo over beautiful men -or women for that matter-

"In the probable case you didn't hear my earlier introduction, I'm Aria d'Argo nice to meet you.". For good note she added, "Might I see your identification? One can never be too careful after all."

This situation, after all, had some resemblance to some of the nightmarish stories she heard from trainers when she was younger. New trainers were seen as easy prey, ones with valuable 'goods' at that. One would hardly be able to meet the starter pokemon in the wild after all. Especially not the ones not native to this region, those often sold for good money to breeders or aspiring trainers who wanted to start with a full team.

And to be approached by an authority figure in the middle of nowhere... It was rather suspicious...

Ofcourse she hoped she was just being paranoid, but it's better to assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised, than to assume the best and come out worse for it. A leason they had hammered into her. She thought of it as sound advice.

Zane was relieved when the first girl claimed to be a local - but then it occurred to him that he hadn't quite thought things through when the white haired one gave her name as Aria but still gave him a funny look and asked for his ID. After all the kids might be not actual kids - or worse think he's not an actual Ranger since they actually asked...and it'd be really awkward if things came to a battle since Zane knew he'd be outnumbered. That was of course accounting for the Chicorita probably having the reach to snatch him with a vine before he could do much anyways. All-in-all this left Zane keeping a healthy distance between himself and the group while patting himself down for his Pokedex.

"Here it is," Zane finally found his Pokedex in one of pockets before pulling it out and hitting a few buttons and holding it forward. The screen displayed his Ranger ID - rather convenient since it wouldn't say directly that he was fresh out of Academy...or in reserve before hitting a button to 'ping' share the information to nearby devices. Also since his profile was still being sorted out because of his last minute change the ID still had him listed as Combat Rescue division of the Rapid Respond Department instead of Search and Rescue Department. A month previously, he'd been told that such an update could take up to three months to settle everything so he'd be officially in two departments until that time.

" Zane Ravager, and you can understand why I'll also ask for yours." Legally speaking Zane wasn't in much of a situation to act if it turned out these kids were breaking any laws. He didn't have a way to detain them for one and at this point an arrest by him would essentially be a citizen's arrest so it'd be difficult to hold up any real law enforcement.

" If you're going to camp out, I'd advise some hustle - depending on if you want fresh water readily at hand or if you're looking for specific Pokemon it's easily up to two hours on foot for a good spot." Zane made a rather lame attempt at small talk using what little knowledge he could infer based on the map he'd looked at on the trip to Pallet. Such information would probably be rather pitiful to a real local but until he got valid identification to support their alleged intent he could only try to feel them out with conversation- and watch.

"So I see it's your first day - how's everyone and their Pokemon getting along?" Zane pitched a rather baseless statement that came from a lecture factoid of 'Rookie Trainers tend to keep their Pokemon outside their Pokeballs'. Naturally the same general statement could be applied to many different trainers of different backgrounds. But Zane was mostly trying to see how the Pokemon and respective Trainers would react to the accusation.

Yuu was quiet for the time being. She didn't feel it necessary to say anything, until the man showed his ranger ID to them. Yuu slowly retrieved her Pokedex from where she kept it in the side pocket of her backpack. She was a little choked up at the moment due to the small amount of people-which was big for her. She brought her ID up on her Pokedex and held it out a little to show him. She was a little more timid now, considering this man looked pretty intimidating in her eyes. But she couldn't assume anything yet. At the ranger's last statement, she spoke finally.

"Oh, Well I've had Fennekin for about five days so far," she said. "We've gotten along pretty well as far as first encounters go. He did nip at me a few times at first, but I think he's opening up now that he's out and about." With her free hand, she held her other arm while holding her Pokedex.

Meanwhile, Fennekin was now on to sniffing the new arrival. He bounded around him and pawed curiously at his feet. "You smell funny, did you go swimming?" He yapped at the man and went back to exploring him.

Miki withdrew her Pokédex from her pack and opened it up. Pressing the "Trainer ID" app's icon, it opened up the page with her image and information for their new arrival, Zane, to see as she held it up for him.

"I just received my Charmander, Blaze, today. He and I are already getting on very well. Thank you for asking," she said pleasantly.

"And about camp, I believe we have a solution for that." She said with a smile.

She brought out her map again and held it down so everyone could see it.

"There's a spot right here," she said as she pointed to a location not far from where they were, " and it's only about twenty minutes away at a brisk walking pace. I found it last year and made it my secret picnic spot. It's perfect for a one night camp site." She said with a giggle as she recalled a little mishap with a Pidgey she had during her last outing.

"How about we move along? I think the temperature is going to be dropping soon so we'd best get a move on." She said as she packed the map away.

She made sure Blaze was by her side before she turned towards the road.

"Shall we?" She asked with a smile over her shoulder to the others.

Aria sagged in relief as he offered them his ID. So it was just a case of her being paranoid...

Either way, it was fair enough for him to ask the same in return, and as the others brought out there pokedexes, and in Miki's case a map too, she too got her pokedex out and showed her ID to him.

"I apologize for my paranoia", she said, "But there are way too many people that prey on new trainers, and I merely though meeting a ranger here, when we only just got our pokemon, was a bit suspicious."

She continued, "As for Chikorita, I just met her today too. I like her, and think she might like me too, although it's still too early to say.", she looked to see if Chikorita was out of hearing range and whispered. "These are just my first impressions, but she seems both headstrong and shy at the same time.", in a mutter she continued, "Somewhat prideful too, so I would like for that statement not to get back to her."

She frowned, as something niggled at the back of her mind at that description. Headstrong, shy, prideful. Her eyes widened in realization after a bit, and she giggled and groaned at the same time, resulting in a somewhat strangled noise.

"I seem to have landed myself a Tsundere..."

Miki had just finished folding her map out, and said there was a nearby place.

She then asked, if they would like to go.

"If you'd have me...", Aria agreed.

In the meantime a slightly miffed -but mostly confused- Chikorita followed after her fellow pokemon and asked them, "What's a Tsundere?"

Zane panned over the groups ID's quickly - not quite skimming but not genuinely reading either. In truth, just enough to get a name in case anything came up later. In terms of actually being answered, he hadn't expected the rather bountiful responses he'd gotten to his accusation...way to go Ranger Academy lecture. On a personal level, he was glad that everyone seemed enthusiastic...but he didn't actually know these people so he ended up being rather taciturn during the whole affair.

He was however rather caught off guard with how well everyone seemed to have their heads on...he hadn't been this mature at their age. Zane returned his Pokedex to his pocket while the realization sank in... he wasn't too sure how he felt about that. Just like the Fennekin that had been running around his legs while sniffing him and yipping - he wasn't too sure if he was being praised, accused or interrogated by the thing. He'd completely gotten caught up within the group's own pace before he was aware of it. As a result, inadvertently ended up replying when the local girl, Miki, mentioned hurrying to the campsite she'd mentioned on the map. Zane made a mental note to mark it on his map later if it actually turned out to be a good spot.

" How cold is it expected to get?" He stepped over the little fox that had been keen on his person to get a bit of space. His uniform was rather well insulated so short of some extreme cold that'd freeze all the water in his suit despite his weights trapping his body heat...Zane was pretty sure he'd be fine. After all, he didn't know much about Pallet's local weather - but in his home town a sudden drop to well beneath freezing wasn't too unusual. Since a sudden cold snap had killed a person or two while growing up, so he was rather diligent in matters like this. Another rather familiar detail was injuries: the quiet girl, Yuu, he'd seen such weight shifting a couple times before. IF he had to guess, it was a nasty fracture which meant if speed was really important he'd end up carrying her. But Zane silently doubted he'd have to deal with such a weather extreme here.

As they began walking together Zane, the Ranger, asked how cold it would get.

"Well this area doesn't get too bad, thankfully. Not like some. But it does get cold enough to cause discomfort when trying to sleep if you haven't already warmed up in your sleeping bag or what have you by the time the nips come calling." She replied.

She pondered the recent weather patterns before offering an estimation.

"I'd estimate that tonight the temperature will drop to around 30 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit. It's right around freezing but my spot is right on the tree line with plenty of flora so we should have some decent protection from wind chill which will make it a bit easier to deal with. We'll have better spots as we continue on tomorrow." She assured them with a smile.

Blaze, meanwhile, heard Chikorita's question but had no reply because he didn't have the first clue as to what a Tsundere was.

Zane kept his ears perked while the group walked and sounds of growling from the Fennekin got him to look back as it tugged on Yuu's leg. Despite his gut telling him this wasn't a good thing he opted to go back to normal walking...and heard a fall sound followed by the Pokemon in question doing a quick circuit up and then back to its trainer. Zane debated whether he should intrude at this point, but Yuu got her Fennekin back and continued walking on her own again without question. He still decided to watch for a bit just in case - old habits dying hard and all that in regards to potentially dangerous situations. However before he could full dissuade himself of the notion of being paranoid...Aria proved to be their second gravitational casualty via book. Truth be told, Zane wasn't sure if he should be concerned or annoyed with this display.

"These people would be nothing more than Bagon food back home," Zane muttered under his breath before speaking in a louder tone. The frustration of the past couple months slowly beginning to boil.

"Matters of time and place aside... do either of you require assistance - I understand pride and such but realize I am able and willing to carry someone if necessary; two if we get creative with a harness." Zane's sentence came out in a flat tone since he didn't have any actual intent behind the sentence. If anything this was a case of Zane opening his mouth without think about what could come out - much less about interpretation. In the same breath, Zane quickly released his Mudkip from its ball on his glove. The Pokemon in its usual laid back manner looked around at the group before turning back to Zane.

"Sorry buddy, I'm going to need you to be my second set of eyes for a while before I can make good on my earlier promise. Zane's voice dropped in volume while addressing Crush, and in this case he was sincerely apologetic.

kaaaay~ in rather stark contrast to how high strung Zane was, Crush's relaxed answer was a direct contrast. However it still fell in line next to Zane as it also weighed the situation - offering again a stark contrast with its relaxed figure next to Zane's ramrod straight posture. At the same time it took the time to address everyone in its usual unhurried manner.
