Zane Ravager

I may just be a Ranger "in training" but Im fairly certain that the training never actually stops.

Description

Name: Zane Ravager
Picture:Here

Description: Zane is a large, muscular young man with shortly cut hair. His skin is naturally a little on the dark side, giving him the permanent tanned look due to his shading. He's got a fair share of cuts, bruises and scars from Ranger training and a rather rambunctious childhood - it's actually rare to see him without some kind of band aid or bandage on. His being Ranger (even though he's only completed Academy training) leaves his wardrobe choice rather simple: clean shaven and the standard uniform - though he always has a set of protective goggles on hand. Unfortunately, Zane is cursed with a naturally sinister looking face and wild dragonish presence that contrasts with his usual warm smile very strongly. When he's not in uniform, Zane still wears boots and rather heavy pants - giving him something of a biker look in his own opinion. Underneath his more "civilian" style dress, Zane wears metal weights on his forearms, thighs, shins and full vest from years of practice. His justification for this is training so his gear never gets heavy and so he can quickly and easy carry a person if need arises.Rather infamously, Zane always wears a tough set of gloves and has a full back religious tattoo.

Age: 22
Sex:Male
DOB: December 21, 1993
Birthplace: Meteor Village, Hoenn
Height:6'4
Weight:225
Hair Color:black
Eye Color:violet
Body Type: Mesomorph
Voice Type: Base

Starting Pokémon: Mudkip - Crush

Owned Pokemon: Mudkip, Poliwag

Carrying: Mudkip, Poliwag

Legendary Pokémon: Giratina

Personality: Zane is a hard working and kind young man, that has his faults just like everyone else. He's also a man of faith that isn't entirely sure what he believes in yet. Among friends or people he trusts and accepts, Zane is the loud friend that's always genuinely happy when something goes well and the first to often even down to the shirt on his back when things go poorly. However to strangers, while the same kindness remains it's tempered by a patient silence as if he's the kind that slowly gets to know and trust. He's also a lover of the environment, partly stemming from his own faith and has a healthy respect of Pokemon too - dragon type in particular. The young man in unabashedly small town sheltered so he can also be a little behind on the times in some areas. Zane relies heavily on his intuition and gut feelings, with a mix of good and bad result since he'll occasionally spring into action or do something simply because ' it felt right' at that point in time. While he won't admit it, Zane's wanted to be a Pokemon Ranger ever since he heard about them despite being a little disillusioned as he's gone through Academy training.

Zane is always pushing or training himself in some form- which often results in his forgetting "small matters" like paperwork. When asked why, he will frequently try to avoid giving and answer since he tries to keep a bit of distance from everyone. He's also very quick to blame himself if something doesn't go entirely well.Zane isn't comfortable with battles, on one hand he's actually a little scared but deep down...he enjoys it - in fact it might be apt to say he revels in the exhilaration of battle. This direct clash manifests in his occasionally hesitating in key moments, giving contrary orders, or freezing entirely due to his discomfort when things get serious.Zane also has a tendency to keep his emotions bottled up - often to the point where it bursts out in a single display. Baggage aside, Zane still leads a relatively normal life and is cleared for active duty when he finishes training.

Strengths: Hardworking, Quick Thinker, Level Headed, Fit, Patient, Courageous, observant
Weaknesses: Unconfident, pushes self too hard, asocial tendencies, impulsive, paperwork

Biography: Zane was born on December 25th 1993 in Meteor Village where the elusive Draconid people dwell deep within Hoenn's Meteor Falls to parents whose names he never knew. The primary reason for this being that his parents were killed by a Salamence somewhere between his 3rd and 4th birthdays. The event was caused because the young Zane had run off to play and was eventually drawn by the sound of two dueling Salamences - ultimately the young Draconid was captivated by the display. When his parents came looking for him on the other hand, the two were unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a stray attack. In the village, this was regarded as an ill omen and while he was collectively raised by the small village as a whole he was still treated as something of a cursed child. While this didn't result in blatant shunning, Zane was still raised with the knowledge and blame of the blood of his parents on his hands among the adults. Among kids, this just made him slightly unpopular as the tight knight community didn't wish to tear itself apart due to a child because their parents didn't trust Zane. As a result, roughly one third of the time Zane ended up playing around Meteor Falls alone and in areas much further from the village than would otherwise be permitted normally for children.

As a result, Zane had many occasion of seeing the majestic sight of a Salamence in flight along with the brutal efforts of Bagon and Shellgon in their attempts to reach such heights compared to his fellows and inspired his work ethic to overcome his obstacles. He also got to see a bit more first hand to byproducts of human interacting negatively with the environment and Pokemon - something in line with the religious teachings of the Dragonids. This was flipped on its head when a ten year old Zane was inadvertently caught up in the after math of the psychic tantrum of a Solrock which effectively buried a leg under a pile of rocks. It was a passing Pokemon Ranger that got him out and deemed the kid lucky for not actually breaking anything that got Zane interested in Pokemon Rangers. In his views, the simple existence of such a person ran at odds with the evils his people decried upon the outside world. Ultimately, it made him curious and resulted in a sixteen year old Zane leaving his village to see things for himself. The village's education wasn't impressive by modern standards, but Zane's effective GED and plethora of more trade like skills allowed him to survive long enough to enlist in Ranger Academy on his 18th birthday.

During Ranger Academy Zane trained to join Rapid Response and to be precise as a combat rescue division. As he'd come to see things, eliminating large evil organizations was more efficient than simply tracking down poachers on range. His physical aptitude through years or hard training on his part left him ahead of the curve in that department. However, Zane had to really work hard to get even average results in the academics department in comparison to his pears. In regards to the Academy's specialized battle theory (having a pokemon nonlethal track, locate and subdue a criminal, shield civilians, infiltration and disaster relief) and mock battles, Zane proved to be within the top 5 of his class. As things grew difficult, Zane began to discover more and more his issues with battles and his ratings steadily dropped to average and then passing. By the time he graduated, Zane wasn't deemed fit enough to do a year in the field. As a result, his hard work and a bit of creative help on administration side allowed him to barely skimp through for the Search and Rescue division instead. While to an extent it could be considered lucky, but given the lateness of his arrival he wasn't able to actually get a mentor - effectively putting him in reserve until one can be acquired. Expecting a rather protracted period of down time, Zane filled out the application for a civilian trainer's license in hopes of acquiring some supplemental experience. His choice of Mudkip was because he believed its strength would be useful in battle, but its ability to detect people through air and water currents would be invaluable for search and rescue.

So begins...

Zane was grateful to finally get off the bus as it arrived into Pallet Town. The long ride had been very uncomfortable from his point of view, and to be honest if time hadn't been an issue he would have just walked. Still the incredibly early arrival was handy in the sense that it allowed him to arrive at the lab around the time the place was opening. The lab attendants do much more than look at the Ranger uniform he was wearing before shunting him to the Professor who was even more hasty to hand him a wet Mudkip, other pertinent equipment and borderline chase him out the door.

" Guess the old man is busy in his own way, don't you think?" Zane rather lamely addressed the still wet Pokemon in his arms while affixing its ball to his left glove for faster use before attaching the other five to his waist. The entire time the Mudkip just stared at him, no nervous or anything just a simple stare as if it was waiting for him to do something. He put the creature down while walking off as the sun was coming up.

"Come on, let's get to know each other somewhere else. I imagine things will only get worse around here...mind if I all you Crush?" His question was met again with the same silence as the Mudkip followed him off quite the distance towards a rather overgrown area near the edge of town before he sat down. In response, the Pokemon simply mirrored the sitting action while the two observed each other. Well more accurately, Zane was observed skimming the information on the sheet the Professor gave him about the Pokemon until Zane stared back in return. A long time passed as the two calmly observed each other and at least in Zane's mind developed something of a silent understanding before Zane spoke again.

" So Crush, I'm Zane - Pokemon Ranger in training. I want to be a Ranger so I can see the world, help people in trouble, and protect nature from people with foul motives. To be honest I'm not capable of doing it myself but think with relentlessly hard work any obstacle can be bested and need a team to help me do things I otherwise couldn't do; I'd also like you to be part of that team I'll be relying on...partner?" Zane held out his hand toward the end - though only about half the distance between the two and waited. After a period of silence neither long nor short, the Mudkip rose and rubbed its still damp head against his hand. Zane couldn't keep the smile off his face in response to the acceptance.

" Just so you know, it won't be easy - after all humans are fragile. It's all fun as easy to say you're willing to help but we're gonna have to see if you can be gentle enough there." Zane stood up and his new partner copied him as he loped out towards Route 1. There hopefully he'd be able to see how Crush interacted with other people and Pokemon in a slightly more controllable setting than the middle of town. The fact it didn't seem aggressive or timid was a plus, but hed needed to know whether or not it was easily distracted by other people. Just because they two managed to sit and observe each other for so long in the quiet didn't guarantee the same would be true in a crowd.

Zane's plan to encounter Trainers in an attempt to socialize Crush had proven less than successful over a period of walking he'd long since forgotten to actually measure. The fact that Crush had just followed along leisurely just made things all the more awkward since he felt the failure somewhat lessened his value in front of his partner.

" Don't suppose you could find us some water do you? Something like a lake would be perfect, that way I can store up some clean water for later on the road." At this, Mudkip perked up a little before taking a low stance and slowly panned its head around. While Zane was intrigued with what exactly was going on, his best guess from what he could remember from Ranger Academy was its fin being sensitive enough for such things. Before he could take out his Pokedex and double check however, Crush took off in a direction. It wasn't fast enough to be a run, but Zane had to move a bit faster than before to keep up with the Pokemon's increase in speed. Unfortunately Zane could only inwardly grown that despite the weight he was carrying only being a bit more than usual - he was still carrying more weight than he weighed around due to his weighted clothing with the heavy travel gear.

Crush lead him for a while, and after crossing over a couple hills and passing a couple Ratatas and startling a group of Pidgeys a clear lake came into view. Zane couldn't help but smile since it was just what he was looking for in terms of gathering water and maybe even catching some extra Pokemon. Crush went to the open end of the lake first, which he appreciated since it wouldn't risk frightening any Pokemon in the reeds along the closer end of the lake. Upon finally reaching the lake shore, Mudkip walked right into the water and swamp around as if...well it was in its natural element. Zane on the other hand dropped his heavy bag down before stripping the bulky short style strapped on plates over his thighs and let the heavy metal crash to the ground. Then he reached under his Ranger vest which doubled as a form of light armor and flotation device and undid the ratchets on both his sides and his shoulders. This caused a vest with similar heavy plates stitched in to fall to the ground once more. The racket drew Crush's attention and a stare as Zane stretched and enjoyed his newly earned lightness.

" I told you didn't I, being a Ranger is hard and you won't find anyone working harder at it than me." Zane's response to the silent Pokemon came with a laugh. He understood his partner's shock since the new Search and Rescue division uniform was a bit thinner than his old Rapid Response one and a lot lighter. Zane's weighted gear brought the total bulk up to the same as his old Rapid Response gear but he designed to be heavier; both because he didn't know how heavy the uniform would be when he started training at 14 and also because he figured it'd be better to be stronger enough to potentially ease up the weight of a person too. While Zane wished he could also drop the weighted sleeves on his forearms and shins, he knew it wouldn't be possible if he wanted to maintain the insulated integrity of his uniform to keep water and such out. He did however open an inner liner of his shirt and pants which allowed water which had warmed considerably due to his efforts of the day to flow out of the suit.

Having emptied the tubing, Zane walked into the clear water. " Good thing the water is so clean, otherwise I'd have to not just filter and boil water to drink - I'd have to filter the water just to put it in my suit." Crush took to circle the young man as his suit bubbled and eventually filled with water, after which Zane closed and returned both tubes to their lining. Zane promptly put the protective goggle that never left his head over his eyes.

"Yo, help me check the place out would you? We might find a buddy or two to help you with things like water rescue or putting out fires later on." Zane made the announcement before diving into the water that had been chest deep until this point and swam off. Crush followed close behind as Zane made his way towards the center, he also kept a close count in his head and after three minutes tapped Mudkip and pointed towards the surface before swimming up. A confused Mudkip followed close behind and upon surfacing, Zane explained. "most civilians can't hold their breath much longer than that so it's good to remember the time. Underwater, if you come across a flailing, spasming or go limp and immobile - take them up to the surface. We'll got down again, after the same time again - we'll go to the surface." Mudkip nodded before the pair went under again since they weren't far enough out yet into the water. This second trip was enough time to get to the center but not get deep enough for Zane to actually look around for Pokemon so when the three minute count was up, he again tapped Mudkip who followed him to the surface.

"This time, I want you to tap me at the time if you're on time I'll thumbs up, too early I'll shake my head, too late and I'll tap you" Mudkip again nodded before the pair dove down, and when they reached the bottom Zane began to look around. As he neared one large rock formation, he saw an orange figure round a bend, and quickly got a tap on his shoulder from his Mudkip. Zane checked the time before giving Mudkip a thumbs up but motioned for it to follow him since he saw a plant near the same bend. When he finally got up to it, Zane recognized the plant from Ranger Academy as Salveyo Weed which could be used to treat humans under the effects of Stun Spore. It also served as the food of Poliwag - an indicator species of water being very clean. Ruffling through it revealed some strands had signs of being eaten... a good sign. At this point, Zane couldn't ignore the burning feeling in his lungs as Mudkip tapped him again and sure enough he'd been under for six full minutes. Relieved at his partners attention to detail, Zane thumbs upped while doing his best to rocket towards the surface - Crush again following.

"You're the man Crush, let's get back to shore. I'll treat you to something there," The pair returned to Zane's thankfully untouched backpack, from there Zane grabbed a handful of cherries before throwing them to Mudkip and then helping himself as he quickly set up a fire before filling a pot with water to boil for two minutes - one should do at this elevation but Zane was willing to waste the extra just to be sure. It took a couple trips and the better part of an hour for him to keep the fire going, restart it once for going out and fill up his canteens with the boiled water.

"well Crush, rest up for another hour or so and then we're going back in the water - we're going to get ourselves a Magikarp and a Poliwag." Zane also made a note to spray the repel he brought to Pallet with him on his bag. Since he'd opened it and brought out food, he couldn't guarantee its usual airtight sealing would work...after all the cherry pits from before would be enough to get a Ratata over.

Zane ended his rest period sooner than expect with Crush - though not before the Pokemon had managed to use the shoreline as a bathroom. The duo slowly crept up on the tall reed area, and sure enough a few Poliwag came into view. Zane watched the group for a few minutes, secretly glad that he was downwind from the group so he could watch in peace. This allowed him to pick out one in particular - one that didn't seem overly active or idle to be his catch. Zane picked up Crush to point out his quarry.

"According to the professor you know Curse so you can more reliably move heavy loads and take hits. While Im not sure how it works, the name sounds like you pay something for it - so Crush sneak up on that one and Curse Tackle to drive it over here. Then I'll catch it, finally we'll head back closer towards the main road before setting up camp for the night. After thinking on it, Im not comfortable removing two Pokemon from this part of the ecosystem." Zane placed Crush down and it slowly crept towards the Poliwag he'd set his sites on. When it got close enough, he saw Crush twitch a bit as if it was experiencing some discomfort before it began moving stiffer than before. Just when he began to wonder the ramifications of his order, Crush moved into action and forcefully leaped over the smaller Poliwag before tackling right into it. The Poliwag ended up rolling towards Zane from the collision while the others scattered and responded with a burst of water from its mouth while Crush again bowled into the Pokemon - seemingly unbothered by the water. As the Poliwag seemed to struggle up from its back from the previous collision Zane threw an empty Pokeball from his belt and hit the Pokemon. He unconsciously held his breath until the Pokemon confirmed a complete capture, at which point he strode forward and retrieved the ball - putting it on his wrist next to Crush's.

"You're the best buddy, you need anything? It looked like that woulda hurt quite a bit from my view point." In response, Crush shook its head, and Zane wasn't going to call it on being a tough guy while it walked back towards him. " In that case, I'll have you rest up until I set up camp and prepare dinner. Zane stated while returning the Mudkip to its Pokeball. He quickly dashed back to his bag, and finding it undisturbed, put it back on and secured the pack to his body before setting off with as much he could manage back towards the main road - even drawing a light out on the way. Given his previous route had been more off the main road than further in, he found himself emerging not too far from a group of what he assumed to be teenagers. The Ranger (in training) honestly found it a little odd for the kids to be out at this hour - after all they were too close to town to honestly consider camping. Especially with the location being rather unsuited for such a thing. From what he recalled, they'd need to walk another mile or seven if they wanted a good spot.

The more he thought about, the worse the expression on Zane's already less than friendly face as he made his way towards the group. As he grew closer and the light he'd originally mistook as a fire turned out to be a Charmander, Zane slowed...rookie trainers actually made sense. In Ranger Academy it was actually joked that without a good map (i.e. one that read itself with GPS directions) rookie trainers could waste an entire day discussing just where they were going - assuming they could even figure out where they were if they could even figure that out. Zane's expression softened at this, but his natural visage still left him far from friendly looking when he got within shouting distance.

" You kids lost?" Zane shouted to get his voice across the remaining distance while switching his hand land around enough to help illuminate his uniform in the low light. Given the state of his team, if the kids ran he couldn't give much chase - but if they were honestly lost he saw no reason to not offer a hand.

Miki gave another light bow of her head to their new arrival, miss Aria.

"The pleasure is mine," she said earnestly.

Not long after listening to miss Aria make introductions Miki heard a shout from nearby. When she turned, she saw a rather imposing figure approaching them. But when she thought about his question, she could only smile.

As he approached to within a range for her to speak instead of shout, she answered his question.

"Actually, we are far from lost good sir." She said with a light bow of her head.

"I've lived here for the past two years or so, and I know the area rather well. If you were to ask me that between Viridian City and Pewter City, I'd have a different answer for you. But at the moment we were just preparing to move on and find a suitable camp ground to spend the night. If you'd like to accompany us you're welcome to as far as I'm concerned. The more the merrier, as they say." She said as she offered him a sweet smile.

Aria looked in the direction of -was that a ranger?- the man that had asked if they were lost right after she finished introducing herself. After Miki had finished talking, she replied.

I don't know about the others", she replied cheerfully, "But I'm exactly where I want to be."

She send the others a guilty look, "That is, if you guys would allow me to camp with you in the spot you'll choose." Something she hadn't gotten around to asking yet.

But what she had said was still true. She thought of this rough area as a good place to camp out on her first night. Not only were they close to a town, which meant the pokemon population was not nearly as thick as it could be, but they would also have the advantage of being in a group.

She knew their current location was far from perfect for camping -aside from being close to rather clean water-, but she figured she might as well get the practice in and get used to unfavourable conditions, as she would have to survive in much worse places and circumstances at some point.

As the man came closer she was able to take in his features. Hmm, he wasn't the prettiest pea in the pod, but she still though him quite handsome under all of those scars. And even with those it wasn't too bad. It gave him a rugged look.

'Wait, where had that thought even come from?'

She really wasn't the type of girl to go googoo over beautiful men -or women for that matter-

"In the probable case you didn't hear my earlier introduction, I'm Aria d'Argo nice to meet you.". For good note she added, "Might I see your identification? One can never be too careful after all."

This situation, after all, had some resemblance to some of the nightmarish stories she heard from trainers when she was younger. New trainers were seen as easy prey, ones with valuable 'goods' at that. One would hardly be able to meet the starter pokemon in the wild after all. Especially not the ones not native to this region, those often sold for good money to breeders or aspiring trainers who wanted to start with a full team.

And to be approached by an authority figure in the middle of nowhere... It was rather suspicious...

Ofcourse she hoped she was just being paranoid, but it's better to assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised, than to assume the best and come out worse for it. A leason they had hammered into her. She thought of it as sound advice.

Zane was relieved when the first girl claimed to be a local - but then it occurred to him that he hadn't quite thought things through when the white haired one gave her name as Aria but still gave him a funny look and asked for his ID. After all the kids might be not actual kids - or worse think he's not an actual Ranger since they actually asked...and it'd be really awkward if things came to a battle since Zane knew he'd be outnumbered. That was of course accounting for the Chicorita probably having the reach to snatch him with a vine before he could do much anyways. All-in-all this left Zane keeping a healthy distance between himself and the group while patting himself down for his Pokedex.

"Here it is," Zane finally found his Pokedex in one of pockets before pulling it out and hitting a few buttons and holding it forward. The screen displayed his Ranger ID - rather convenient since it wouldn't say directly that he was fresh out of Academy...or in reserve before hitting a button to 'ping' share the information to nearby devices. Also since his profile was still being sorted out because of his last minute change the ID still had him listed as Combat Rescue division of the Rapid Respond Department instead of Search and Rescue Department. A month previously, he'd been told that such an update could take up to three months to settle everything so he'd be officially in two departments until that time.

" Zane Ravager, and you can understand why I'll also ask for yours." Legally speaking Zane wasn't in much of a situation to act if it turned out these kids were breaking any laws. He didn't have a way to detain them for one and at this point an arrest by him would essentially be a citizen's arrest so it'd be difficult to hold up any real law enforcement.

" If you're going to camp out, I'd advise some hustle - depending on if you want fresh water readily at hand or if you're looking for specific Pokemon it's easily up to two hours on foot for a good spot." Zane made a rather lame attempt at small talk using what little knowledge he could infer based on the map he'd looked at on the trip to Pallet. Such information would probably be rather pitiful to a real local but until he got valid identification to support their alleged intent he could only try to feel them out with conversation- and watch.

"So I see it's your first day - how's everyone and their Pokemon getting along?" Zane pitched a rather baseless statement that came from a lecture factoid of 'Rookie Trainers tend to keep their Pokemon outside their Pokeballs'. Naturally the same general statement could be applied to many different trainers of different backgrounds. But Zane was mostly trying to see how the Pokemon and respective Trainers would react to the accusation.

Yuu was quiet for the time being. She didn't feel it necessary to say anything, until the man showed his ranger ID to them. Yuu slowly retrieved her Pokedex from where she kept it in the side pocket of her backpack. She was a little choked up at the moment due to the small amount of people-which was big for her. She brought her ID up on her Pokedex and held it out a little to show him. She was a little more timid now, considering this man looked pretty intimidating in her eyes. But she couldn't assume anything yet. At the ranger's last statement, she spoke finally.

"Oh, Well I've had Fennekin for about five days so far," she said. "We've gotten along pretty well as far as first encounters go. He did nip at me a few times at first, but I think he's opening up now that he's out and about." With her free hand, she held her other arm while holding her Pokedex.

Meanwhile, Fennekin was now on to sniffing the new arrival. He bounded around him and pawed curiously at his feet. "You smell funny, did you go swimming?" He yapped at the man and went back to exploring him.

Miki withdrew her Pokédex from her pack and opened it up. Pressing the "Trainer ID" app's icon, it opened up the page with her image and information for their new arrival, Zane, to see as she held it up for him.

"I just received my Charmander, Blaze, today. He and I are already getting on very well. Thank you for asking," she said pleasantly.

"And about camp, I believe we have a solution for that." She said with a smile.

She brought out her map again and held it down so everyone could see it.

"There's a spot right here," she said as she pointed to a location not far from where they were, " and it's only about twenty minutes away at a brisk walking pace. I found it last year and made it my secret picnic spot. It's perfect for a one night camp site." She said with a giggle as she recalled a little mishap with a Pidgey she had during her last outing.

"How about we move along? I think the temperature is going to be dropping soon so we'd best get a move on." She said as she packed the map away.

She made sure Blaze was by her side before she turned towards the road.

"Shall we?" She asked with a smile over her shoulder to the others.

Aria sagged in relief as he offered them his ID. So it was just a case of her being paranoid...

Either way, it was fair enough for him to ask the same in return, and as the others brought out there pokedexes, and in Miki's case a map too, she too got her pokedex out and showed her ID to him.

"I apologize for my paranoia", she said, "But there are way too many people that prey on new trainers, and I merely though meeting a ranger here, when we only just got our pokemon, was a bit suspicious."

She continued, "As for Chikorita, I just met her today too. I like her, and think she might like me too, although it's still too early to say.", she looked to see if Chikorita was out of hearing range and whispered. "These are just my first impressions, but she seems both headstrong and shy at the same time.", in a mutter she continued, "Somewhat prideful too, so I would like for that statement not to get back to her."

She frowned, as something niggled at the back of her mind at that description. Headstrong, shy, prideful. Her eyes widened in realization after a bit, and she giggled and groaned at the same time, resulting in a somewhat strangled noise.

"I seem to have landed myself a Tsundere..."

Miki had just finished folding her map out, and said there was a nearby place.

She then asked, if they would like to go.

"If you'd have me...", Aria agreed.

In the meantime a slightly miffed -but mostly confused- Chikorita followed after her fellow pokemon and asked them, "What's a Tsundere?"

Zane panned over the groups ID's quickly - not quite skimming but not genuinely reading either. In truth, just enough to get a name in case anything came up later. In terms of actually being answered, he hadn't expected the rather bountiful responses he'd gotten to his accusation...way to go Ranger Academy lecture. On a personal level, he was glad that everyone seemed enthusiastic...but he didn't actually know these people so he ended up being rather taciturn during the whole affair.

He was however rather caught off guard with how well everyone seemed to have their heads on...he hadn't been this mature at their age. Zane returned his Pokedex to his pocket while the realization sank in... he wasn't too sure how he felt about that. Just like the Fennekin that had been running around his legs while sniffing him and yipping - he wasn't too sure if he was being praised, accused or interrogated by the thing. He'd completely gotten caught up within the group's own pace before he was aware of it. As a result, inadvertently ended up replying when the local girl, Miki, mentioned hurrying to the campsite she'd mentioned on the map. Zane made a mental note to mark it on his map later if it actually turned out to be a good spot.

" How cold is it expected to get?" He stepped over the little fox that had been keen on his person to get a bit of space. His uniform was rather well insulated so short of some extreme cold that'd freeze all the water in his suit despite his weights trapping his body heat...Zane was pretty sure he'd be fine. After all, he didn't know much about Pallet's local weather - but in his home town a sudden drop to well beneath freezing wasn't too unusual. Since a sudden cold snap had killed a person or two while growing up, so he was rather diligent in matters like this. Another rather familiar detail was injuries: the quiet girl, Yuu, he'd seen such weight shifting a couple times before. IF he had to guess, it was a nasty fracture which meant if speed was really important he'd end up carrying her. But Zane silently doubted he'd have to deal with such a weather extreme here.

As they began walking together Zane, the Ranger, asked how cold it would get.

"Well this area doesn't get too bad, thankfully. Not like some. But it does get cold enough to cause discomfort when trying to sleep if you haven't already warmed up in your sleeping bag or what have you by the time the nips come calling." She replied.

She pondered the recent weather patterns before offering an estimation.

"I'd estimate that tonight the temperature will drop to around 30 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit. It's right around freezing but my spot is right on the tree line with plenty of flora so we should have some decent protection from wind chill which will make it a bit easier to deal with. We'll have better spots as we continue on tomorrow." She assured them with a smile.

Blaze, meanwhile, heard Chikorita's question but had no reply because he didn't have the first clue as to what a Tsundere was.

Zane kept his ears perked while the group walked and sounds of growling from the Fennekin got him to look back as it tugged on Yuu's leg. Despite his gut telling him this wasn't a good thing he opted to go back to normal walking...and heard a fall sound followed by the Pokemon in question doing a quick circuit up and then back to its trainer. Zane debated whether he should intrude at this point, but Yuu got her Fennekin back and continued walking on her own again without question. He still decided to watch for a bit just in case - old habits dying hard and all that in regards to potentially dangerous situations. However before he could full dissuade himself of the notion of being paranoid...Aria proved to be their second gravitational casualty via book. Truth be told, Zane wasn't sure if he should be concerned or annoyed with this display.

"These people would be nothing more than Bagon food back home," Zane muttered under his breath before speaking in a louder tone. The frustration of the past couple months slowly beginning to boil.

"Matters of time and place aside... do either of you require assistance - I understand pride and such but realize I am able and willing to carry someone if necessary; two if we get creative with a harness." Zane's sentence came out in a flat tone since he didn't have any actual intent behind the sentence. If anything this was a case of Zane opening his mouth without think about what could come out - much less about interpretation. In the same breath, Zane quickly released his Mudkip from its ball on his glove. The Pokemon in its usual laid back manner looked around at the group before turning back to Zane.

"Sorry buddy, I'm going to need you to be my second set of eyes for a while before I can make good on my earlier promise. Zane's voice dropped in volume while addressing Crush, and in this case he was sincerely apologetic.

kaaaay~ in rather stark contrast to how high strung Zane was, Crush's relaxed answer was a direct contrast. However it still fell in line next to Zane as it also weighed the situation - offering again a stark contrast with its relaxed figure next to Zane's ramrod straight posture. At the same time it took the time to address everyone in its usual unhurried manner.

Aria flushed, both at falling and the ranger's following question.

She muttered something illegible, before repeating it louder, "I'm fine. Sorry."

She bit her lip and continued, "It's just... Chikorita seemed to be unhappy with something, and I wanted to try and ask what caused it..." She trailed off in embarassment, looking like she wanted to find some hole to hide in at being put in the spotlight like that.

Chikorita felt just as bad as her trainer to be singled out like that. "I'm sorry...", she stuttered, "It's just...", she blushed, before mumbling almost illegibly, What happened to my ride?"

Aria, who had turned to Chikorita at the pokemon's words, was a bit confused however. Chikorita was clearly trying to tell her something, but it seemed the little pokemon had forgotten humans couldn't understand her. Still, her expression softened, as the pokemon obviously felt bad about it.

Chikorita, in the meantime, had clued into her faux pass. And decided on an another method. She carefully took the book that had fallen down on the road with one vine and shook it a little, while gesturing towards Yuu holding her Fennekin with the other.

Even to a little slug like Aria it was pretty clear what Chikorita was trying to say.

"You want to be carried?", she clarified. Inwardly relieved that it was something this simple.

In a softer voice she continued, "I'm so sorry... It just seemed like you didn't have a problem with walking beside me at the start of our journey, and you pretty much immediately jumped out of my arms the one time I did carry you. Although, in hindsight, I can see why... It's just... I... It's...", once more she trailed off, burying her face in her hands.

"I'm a horrible trainer...", she whispered forlornly.

Zane was taken aback at the reaction he'd gotten from Aria and it wasn't until Crush threw him a look that he registered his words may have been a little harsh. When Miki stepped up to play comforter,Zane motioned for Crush to give him some space and the Mudkip gave him a bit more room that he required. Zane still used the period Miki spent talking to drop his back and Ranger vest - revealing the plated vest he wore under it and while he undid the sides - in order to not interrupt Miki he hoisted the monstrous load off his shoulders and onto the ground. Zane only just managed to undo the sealing on his gloves by the time Miki finished talking.

"One of the first things they tell you in Ranger Academy," Zane made a point to look at everyone's face before continuing. "Is that the first time something goes wrong: you fail, you identified a problem. If the same thing happens a second time:you solved a symptom to the actual problem. If it happens a third time: you misunderstood the problem. However if it happens a fourth time: you fundamentally failed to understand the problem - it also goes without saying of course that accidents do happen."

Zane made a point to get closer to the main body of the group this time since he didn't intend to do this kind of talk a second time.

" The second thing, is communication - the biggest mistakes are a Trainer or Pokemon not paying full attention to what's going on, and the second is not clearly getting their point across. Usually the two happen at the same time and result...accidents like this."To punctuate his sentence, Zane took of the glove that didn't have Pokeballs attached to it and held out his palm to be seen. The hand in question was obviously heavily burned, scarred and was clearly permanently damaged beyond full repair. With his other hand, Zane slowly worked open the front of his uniform while letting his injury sink in. When he got his uniform open, he slipped the ungloved hand out of the sleeve - baring the metal forearm guard and a heavily scarred torso. In particular one on his side stood out due to a strange color. Zane promptly pointed at it.

"This one I got during a supervised outing in my second Academy year. The senior used a new Pokemon to act as guard while giving a lesson on plants and other ecosystem stuff. While we had our noses in notebooks, no one caught it signalling a Seviper in the brush. I got nicked by the tail blade for this... after it tore through the upperclassman like paper." Zane made a second attempt to look everyone in the face again for his conclusion.

"Point being: be careful and pay attention to those little details now since you're just getting started to form good habits. Contrary to popular belief: the best trainers aren't the ones who win every battle or make no mistakes. The best trainers are the one who can make sure everyone gets home safely despite everything going wrong." Sadly, the environmental sealing wouldn't let Zane simply slip his arm back into his sleeve to finish. Instead he had to undo the sealing on his waist, resulting in the top falling slack enough to bare half his back; baring his tattoo of Arceus and the other 'Legendary' Pokemon all within massive draconic frame...and a clear thin cut going straight down his spine. However the slack let him get his arm in the sleeve, reglove his hand and reclose the environmental seals in proper order before he began to put the rest of his gear back on.

Yuu watched everything go on in front of her but said nothing. Her Fennekin slept as she carried it. She frowned a little while she listened to the ranger talk. It seemed that everyone had at least some kind of scar, even Yuu had one- in a way. She was quiet for the time being, considering that she didn't know what to say or she just didn't want to say anything.

Fennekin was rather warm, and his body heat gave Yuu warmth as well. She kept her empty expression on the ground as she continued to listen to whatever the ranger was talking about. She thought for a while, and it came to her that she has had her Pokemon longer than anyone else in the group so far. But that didn't necessarily mean she knew any more than they did. Fennekin hadn't battled yet, so he was most likely still as experienced as the other Pokemon.

While carefully holding Fennekin with one arm, she reached a hand up and removed her glasses. Her vision worsened at this, but she wasn't too worried about it, even though everything she looked at was fuzzy. She slipped her glasses onto her head and continued walking, now holding Fennekin with both arms.

Aria stiffened a little when Miki hugged her. She was really not used to them, aside from some playful tackle-hugs by the twins. What was the last time she had been comforted this way? She couldn't remember... Her father was always busy, the relationship with her sister too bitchy and the twins were too young.

She didn't say anything to Miki in return, her words lost for the moment.

After that Zane started talking. Aria winced at what he was describing. Even though she's heard such horror stories before, with him showing his scars like that, it became more real.

"Okay", she said softly, although she was still slightly uneasy that she had caused this much trouble for anyone.

Chikorita in the meantime, watched these proceedings with wide eyes, not sure as to what to say. How had it turned out like this? She had merely wanted a ride... She was uncomfortable with this blatant showing of emotion. This was a mon-eat-mon world, had even been back at the breeder's place. To show weakness like this...

On one hand, it was inconceivable. On the other the companionship seemed... nice?

While she had never needed anyone before, she, for a moment, wondered if she could create such a thing too.

Miki listened to the Ranger's lecture on the matter of being aware and paying attention to the details. She also listened silently to the bit towards the end where he said that the best Trainers were the ones who made sure that everyone got home safely despite what may have gone wrong.

While fundamentally that was true depending on one's perspective, Miki believed it was a bit flawed in its direction.

"With all due respect, Zane, you said your name was?" She asked calmly.

"I believe your vision of what the best Trainers do is being confused with your opinion of what the best Rangers do. While Rangers are Pokemon Trainers as well, after a fashion, they are very different in mindset and purpose than the average Trainer like us. As Trainers we're at home no matter where we are so long as our Pokemon are by our sides, so making sure everyone makes it home safely doesn't really apply to us. I believe our job, as the best Trainers we can be, is to learn and grow alongside our Pokemon as well as to take care of one another in times both good and bad."

She spoke calmly the whole time so as not to entice any kind of hostile or frustrated response.

"While similar in basic concept the fundamental principle of what we do and what the best of our respective lifestyles do is quite different. We, as Trainers, are not here as a rescue squad or part of a team that needs to ensure everyone gets home safe. We're here to live alongside our Pokemon to the best of our ability and to make sure that we create the future for ourselves that we've always dreamed of." She said with a smile.

She was hoping that this difference of opinion wouldn't cause too much of a stir, but she did think that as a Ranger Zane was a bit biased. Average Trainers like her weren't rescuers or protectors, so "getting everyone home safely" was a bit of an extreme and unneeded philosophy for Trainers like her and the others. A Ranger's job was definitely to make sure that everyone got home safely. But as a normal Trainer her job was to ensure that she and her Pokemon lived side by side

Zane nodded when Miki sought clarification on his name and his expression didn't change throughout the girl's presentation of her opinion - though fundamentally he found himself unable to understand such an idyllic method of thought. But rather than pursuing the point, he opted for just a soft reply.

"Would that we lived in such a world...but wild Pokemon don't exactly follow Regulations and won't simply attack your Pokemon if you're an easy target. While in practice, you're not wrong -on a fundamental level it's too easy for someone to decide the rules don't apply. After all, if everyone followed rules - there would be no need for law enforcement. So while keeping everyone alive may not be completely in your face - best of luck growing alongside your Pokemon if one of you doesn't pull through." His tone was actually a little envious since he'd never gotten such a gentle view of things.

Zane returned Crush to its ball before setting off at a faster pace - tired of talking.

"I'm goin' on ahead..." Start to finish, Zane's voice had been void of genuine warmth or gentleness after - he didnt know them. To that end he didn't even see the need to finish the thought as he left the group behind. Sure he'd handle campsite prep, but that was the current limit to his kindness.

Miki smiled but was a bit confused by the Ranger's sudden change of pace. He began walking ahead rather quickly. Miki hadn't even told him where she planned on going. If he was going to stay with them walking ahead at a quickened pace like that wasn't going to help him any. Still she let it go and patted Blaze on the head as they walked on.

Twenty minutes passed by very quickly for Miki and before they knew it they had arrived at what she called her "picnic spot."

It was a near perfectly flat clearing in the trees around 30 meters across. The trees were just tall enough for the sun to cast a shadow on around half the clearing at any one time while the rest was open sunlight. A small creek was nearby and could be heard, but not seen. Soft and short grass coupled with a few scattered flowers gave it a sweet aroma when the wind picked up every now and then. And lastly were a few well shaped boulders with flat tops which would be perfect as makeshift tables for eating meals. Nearby in the promised tree line was a rather thin albeit dense line of underbrush which would create a perfect wind break to help them avoid the chills of the night air.

Miki made her way towards the clearing's gathering of boulders and sat down in front of one of the smaller ones where she set her pack down and turned towards the others.

"I'll get started on gathering firewood. I've never made a campfire that was meant to last through the night though so I am afraid I have to ask one of you to make it in my stead." She said with an apologetic bow.

"Well, I'm off! We'll be back in a few minutes." She said as she and Blaze took off into the nearby trees.

Zane spent the trip to the camp site doing something of a sweep of a large arc in front of the other trainers. It was a way of getting a view to spot potential Pokemon while somewhat extending his view a bit further from the group for landmarks and somewhat allowing a view behind the group. When they finally got to the spot, he was forced to admit that the place was much butter than the location he'd intended to use. At Miki's words of not knowing how to do a long term fire...Zane wasn't overly shocked since the knowledge was rather lacking to the inexperienced.

"Easily done," however he wasn't certain how much the girl actually heard when she ran off. Somewhat sighing, Zane turned his gaze to the rest while again dropping his pack and taking up his axe. He faced the rest of the group while flipping the handle over for someone to take it.

" If you know how, good - anyone that doesn't gets to learn now. At any rate, one of you take this and try pushing the handle to the ground and stand straight without the head attached. If you can't, it'll change how we set up the fire a bit. Rule of thumb: you want two logs per person from standing dead wood ideally of 3 feet to 3.5 feet in length per person using the fire. The logs in question will be about 1 inch of thickness per hour you intend to have the fire burn. Long burning low maintenance fires aren't the same fires you typically see during camp outs." Zane flatly yet quickly recounted a bit of knowledge of the fire he intended to use. Considering he had no intention of holding everyone's hand their whole journey so Zane intended to explain and demonstrate more than actually do all the work himself despite it being faster.

Yuu wasn't paying attention for the time being. Fennekin was still sleeping in her arms and she had found somewhere to set her backpack and sit down. She gently placed Fennekin onto the ground and opened the front pouch of her backpack and pulled out a small blanket that was perfect for one person to use. Fennekin was on his back and he snored quietly, making Yuu smile in amusement. She put her glasses back on and stood up to untie her jacket from around her waist so she could put it on.

She draped the blanket over her shoulders and sat back down with her back against a stump and she carefully picked up Fennekin and put him in her lap. She looked down at him and pulled the small blanket around her shoulders a bit tighter. But to her shock, Fennekin jolted awake, and squirmed around on her lap to get to his feet. Yuu was a little shocked at this and let out a tiny yelp. Fennekin bounded off her lap and proceeded to run toward the path and away from the group. Yuu stood up frantically and dropped the blanket to the ground.

"Fennekin! Don't run off!" Yuu called out softly, somehow still unable to speak as loudly as she wanted to. She followed him, trying to keep up with the strange little fox as he bounded away.

"More friends! Fennekin yipped. Yuu was puzzled, only to think that he was asleep not that long ago. Her leg made it difficult for her to keep up with the now energetic Pokemon. She was only able to jog after him.

"Fennekin!" Yuu seemed to whine in annoyance as her companion slowed down. He jumped up and down as another trainer and his Pokemon came into view.

"Look, trainer, friends! Fennekin barked playfully at Yuu, seeing that she had followed him.

Zane had intended to go further into explanation about what he'd described was a gapfire - which while great for keeping warm in essentially any form of weather wasn't exactly good for cooking. At least that was the plan until he noticed Yuu and her Pokemon run off as well. Given his good will wasn't being appreciated, Zane lost interest in the endeavor. After all, he wasn't on duty so it wasn't his job at this time and he'd be faster without the kids.

"Guess we can just forget it then," Zane reflipped the axe handle back into his palm before throwing it blade first into the ground with extreme familiarity. Having grown up far enough into the boonies where he'd grown up without running electricity, Zane felt he'd be of some assistance but since the kids were leisurely as is...he took it as a sign of being unneeded. In a rather defeated manner, Zane mumbled his admission of defeat his voice carrying a bit more than he intended.

"I'll just make sure she doesn't go hurt herself, bring her back and then leave," unfortunately Zane couldn't keep emotion from his voice with such an admission. Rather pointedly, he still cast Aria a quick glance before setting off, "For cooking, single long - same thickness, cut three quarters down the length to make an X. Light the center - warmth and cooking, doesn't hold up to weather." His voice was a dull monotone with the instruction before he loped off after the recent runaway. After some distance, Zane switched to a full on run to quickly close the gap as he tracked and followed before eventually a man who seemed about his age came into view. At least that was the feeling Zane got based on how...at ease he seemed in contrast to the carelessness of the teenagers he'd been with so far.

"Well, would you look at that...it's like we all just spring out of holes in the ground." Rather uncharacteristically Zane found himself somewhat joking at the scenario while pulling out his Pokedex with another ID ping.

"Ranger, Zane Ravager - and you are?" Zane rather flatly made his inquiry of the new guy. If like the kids, the guy checked out well enough Zane was just going back to camp. As for if things required he metaphorically clock in...Zane cut the line of thought before it could go any further.

"Stranger danger, you understand right?"

Alden's made his approach toward the unnatural noises slowly. As much as he wanted company, he knew better than to rush headlong into danger. As he approached he started making out a light, and a few figures were able to be made out around said light. He was prepared for a fight if need be, but it quickly became apparent that most likely wasn't going to be needed.

A small Pokemon whom he was unfamiliar with ran In his direction It seemed friendly enough, so Alden crouched down and put out his hand towards the small friendly Pokemon as he approached. The fox like Pokemon didn't even bother sniffing it or trying to familiarize with him, and pushed itself into his hand, making noises of obvious content. Alden smiled at its friendliness, and stood up to look up at the figures approaching him.

One was a young woman, who seemed to be the small Pokemons trainer. She had a strange walk to her. She was dressed in black, and a blanket draped over her shoulder. She didn't seem comfortable with the outdoors. The strange walk seemed natural in a way. It was something she'd probably been with for a while. Maybe that's what led to her seeming discomfort with the outdoors. The other figure was a man much larger than himself, but seemingly of a similar age. He had darker skin and short hair, practically shaved. Alden was proud of his toned body, but this man very obviously was stronger than him. The man approached first, after "pinging" him as he'd found out it was called. He introduced himself as Zane, a Pokemon Ranger, and apologized for pinging him, chalking it up to stranger danger.

"Alden. I started my journey today. You folks the trainers Leingod told me about?" Alden asked, as he lowered his latern and dimmed it. He looked around Zane to get a look at the rest of the group, who he couldn't quite make out yet.

Fennekin seemed to like this person, but it puzzled Yuu. She frowned a little at him as he was so friendly with the stranger. Zane approached too, and Yuu felt a little guilty and shied away slightly as he approached. Fennekin zipped back to her and she held out an arm and he jumped up, but quickly squirmed away and got back on the ground. Yuu let out a small sigh at his sudden energy. It was starting to be a little much for her. As Alden and Zane got acquainted, Yuu walked backward a little, hoping Fennekin would follow. But he just ran back and forth jumping up on Alden's leg and then he ran around in circles. Soon, he bounded over to her and started to tug on her pant leg again as he had done earlier that evening.

Yuu shook her head at him, but he kept tugging. I wasn't a very forceful tug and Yuu didn't move an inch. "Fennekin, not now," she said softly. The fox let go and whined at her before sitting in front of her patiently. Which wasn't something he had done recently. Yuu looked up at Zane and Alden and adjusted her glasses. Maybe she should introduce herself as well. She waited for the appropriate time to speak. "My name is Yuu Aikayama."

Miki spent almost fifteen full minutes gathering firewood with Blaze by her side. Hopefully the others would have built the fire so all she had to do was load the wood and let Blaze light it up. She was not very good with outdoorsy style things like this. Camping in a pre-built camping shelter? She could do that. Build her own fire, set up her own tent, find food growing in the wild? Not so much.

She was grateful to have others around. At the very least the Ranger would know what to do. They were trained for that right?

Once she and Blaze had gathered enough firewood they made their way back to camp and found an interesting sight along the way. Another Trainer had wandered through the area and was asking about them. With her arms full of firewood and Miki just barely able to see over the pile, she tried her best to move her head so she could see and speak while being heard.

"Good evening!" She called.

"Some of us are fresh from Professor Leingod's lab, as you guessed. My name is Miki Saegusa! It's nice to meet you!" She said, turning her body so her whole face could be seen as she smiled sweetly at the newcomer.
