These days though, he tried to take it easy.
History:
The Other Pate's:
Thomas "Tommy" Pate ~
Tommy got a reputation fast for the way he ran things in his world. He was harsh mouthed, strong willed, and a fighter to the end. He and Forrest Johnson get along really well, and while people will never fully understand their friendship, no one can doubt that they do good things for each other. However, while Forrest tends to bring out the best in Tommy, Tommy tends to bring out the worst in Forrest.
He's the oldest Pate left after the flu epidemic, only thirty years old, married with a kid at eighteen.
He's also well known to be a chauvinistic pig.

Mary (Beugard) Pate ~
While Mary still holds some natural beauty, she's generally seen as being very tired and washed out, usually only thrown together for the day. In her youth she known for being a free spirit and generally benevolent. She was kind hearted but somehow always knew Tommy Pate would be her undoing. But for a good girl like Mary Beugard, anything that Daddy didn't like sounded like a good idea to her.
None of Mary's immediate family members were touched by the flu, but after being pregnant at sixteen she was no longer claimed by her family. She married Tommy alone, and finds it easier just to pretend the rest of her family is dead.
Mary fits Tommy's vision of women without a problem, but hopes that one day her daughter will be a stronger person.

Lucinda "Lucy" Louise Pate ~
Lucy is the apple of her father's eye and the only person who he truly treats well. She's never been fully aware of the danger they live in, save knowing that if anyone ever tells her to run, she has an exact place to go and never leave until she's fetched from her spot.
Despite the arrangement her parents have, and the lack of money, Lucy has never felt anything but loved. When asked, she claims she wouldn't change a thing.
People who even utter her name that Tommy doesn't like usually find themselves with a bullet in their brain.
