Personality

Harold J. McCurry, aka Ralph Caldwell is an extremely intelligent
character, cunning and crafty and very much a chameleon (quick change
artist) and impresario ( very adapt at dropping one persona and
picking up another). He has had extensive training in police
procedures, interrogation and investigation and was always at the top
of his class. Caldwell is also a quick- draw artist and trick
shootist without equal and very often stacks the deck against would-be
adversaries, by arming himself with specially made, often experimental
types of firearms, frequently catching more scrupulous gunmen quite
unawares. He has his code of ethics and personal set of principles,
but when push comes to shove, Caldwell is not above leaving alot of
dead men in his wake. Accused of heinous crimes he did not commit,
Caldwell has been on the run both from law enforcement officers and
man-killers for a very long time. He is both physically tired and
weary to the depths of his soul of running and hiding, and somewhere
along the line he lost his faith in all but a handful of men, and
women, in the world. He is closer now than ever to clearing his name,
visiting justice on his antagonists and all their henchmen and hired
gunmen, and returning to claim the love of the woman he believes could
be the true love of his life, Madelaine "Maddy" Church. He also has one boot in
the graveyard already, but he won't go to meet his Maker alone, by any
means....In short, he is a very tragic, and very deadly, customer.

History

Harold James McCurry received formal collegiate education Back East at a time when he might have otherwise have been made to serve in the Confederate Army (albeit he was a tad young, but than alot of very young men were indeed enlisted, or volunteered to serve in the Confederate Army. But Harry came from a very wealthy southern family and his mother and grandmother did not wish him to become directly involved in the War Between Nations).

It was at this time he met and shared in some type investigative work with Reid and Gordon. "Harry" was an avid reader and aficionado of the fictional work of an English author named Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and showed an appreciation of field investigative work and forensic investigation early on. Harry has a keen sense of observation and is astonishingly good at ferreting out the truth; and he knows the procedures used by the Civil War Era Boston Police Department, as well

Furthermore, when as a young adult his family got into a dispute with the Railroad and the Pinkertons after the Civil War, Harry was again shunted off from the family to the Frontier, where he was enlisted into the Texas Rangers by a man of no small repute with the Rangers. The man found Harry McCurry to be extraordinarily proficient with all types of firearms, horseflesh and investigative work and was more than willing to sponsor the young man to the Texas Rangers.

Harold "Harry" J. McCurry might well have made a lifelong career of the Texas Rangers but early on he want out on an assignment in New Mexico ( with the brash and headstrong Ranger who had first sponsored him) But due to a fatal mistake of identity McCurry and the four brave men with him were forced to shoot down and kill an entire townful of people, who had mistaken them for a gang of blood thirsty bandits who had been terrorizing the region. The same men 'Kid" McCurry and the other Rangers had been sent to New Mexico to try and bring to justice.

But if the complete massacre of the townspeople of Purgatory, New Mexico wasn't horrendous enough, McCurry and his fellow Rangers were also forced to shoot and kill five US Marshalls who also took them for the same bandits the slain townspeople had mistaken them to be....

In so far as he knows, only McCurry himself survived the debacle and he was forced to flee north, as he was assumed by the US Marshalls to have slain in the massacre- shootout along with the other "corrupt" Texas Rangers who had allegedly given their alliance to the leader of the gang of bandits he and the other Texas Rangers had slain. Or he had survived and fled away thereby becoming a fugitive from justice.

Now Harry was/is a survivalist and a pass master of masquerade (and an accomplished escape artist) and he was successful in evading both the Texas Rangers ( who presumed his was one of the many bodies[ or the ashen remain of one of those bodies] found in the massive funeral pyre and conflagration that left Purgatory, New Mexico little more than a smoking head of ashes.). And the US Marshalls, didn't want to have to admit that five of their own could even have been a part of such an enormous travesty visited against the Texas Rangers, so they closed the case.

Tortured by nightmares for the part he himself had unwillingly played in the Purgatory Massacre, Harry survived by taking whatever job came to hand for a man always on the move. For while the town formerly known as Purgatory New Mexico was restored, re-named (Promise City) and re-populated, one member of the US Marshalls refused to let the matter of the Purgatory Massacre rest in peace. So, Harry continued to flee and would have left the country altogether, but his wealthy and well-known southern family convinced him to remain in the United States. He finally stopped running and took up residence; under an assumed name and identity, in a small mining town in Montana.

he has spent the last few months
being coached in the proper procedures and protocols practiced by the
Pinkertons, because he has received training by two allies who are
themselves field agents of the newly re-established Department of
Defense. I wrote Department of the Treasury earlier, but that might
have been a slight oversight on my part. The fact of the matter is
these two men are far and away the most effective secret field
operatives of the United States government, answerable for their words
and actions to the President of the United States, alone.
