That night, the moon stained with its majestic glow. Lighting up the unusually clear night. Sitting on a wall outside of a three storey apartment was a young woman; Evie Monroe. Eighteen years old, Evie was an average young adult searching for jobs, parties, dates and fun at any occasion. Recently, she had finished college and was currently job seeking for her newly qualified and dream profession: a stage hand. Since a young age, Evie had listened to all types of Rock and Metal genre music, dreaming to someday working with bands, even if it meant simply setting up a stage! That very day, Evie received some news of a job offer down the local theatre, who held all kinds of performances everyday, from pantomimes to big concerts. Immediately, she had gotten on the phone to accept the offer before phoning her best friend straight after. "Hey, hey is Jeanette there?!" Evie had squealed down the phone with excitement to the mum of her best friend, dancing up a down where she stood. She waited impatiently for Jeanette's mum to pass her best friend over. Eventually, she heard a familiar voice on the phone. Telling her best friend all about her news, they arranged to meet up the next day; the first day of her new job. Since a young age, Jeanette and Evie had been best friends. They told each other everything. Evie had always been somewhat jealous of her friend... Jeanette was pretty, outgoing, who didn't care what anybody thought of her. Herself on the other hand, was pretty but not like Jeanette; she always had guys looking at her in all sorts of ways. Evie also had always secretly cared what others thought of her, even though she tried not to show it in front of Jeanette but she guessed she already knew. Quieter and more responsible.. They were quite opposite! But none-the-less, they were best friends.
A good hour has passed, Evie still didn't get tired of looking at the moon. She had a great view from where she sat.. The night began to get colder, making the young woman retreat into her small apartment where she slept the night away.
The morning soon arrived, a brisk fresh breeze coming through her open window. Shivering lightly, Evie got up in nothing but a small strap top and some PJ shorts to shut the window. Memories from the previous day soon hit her.. She had a job to attend to! ... But not before meeting up with Jeanette. Showering, drying, changing.. She hurried to get ready, tripping over a few times in the process. Once she was completely ready, Evie ran out of her apartment, to meet her best friend outside of the theatre. She arrived and waited patiently for her.. She had an hour to spare before she would have to start setting up the stage for the upcoming night. Leaning up the wall, she saw a band arriving with lots of instruments and amplifiers. Were they the band playing that night? .. They seemed pretty cool. As they passed, Evie smiled shyly, feeling stupid. "Why.. why are you smiling Evie.. Stop it. You are making a fool out of yourself.." She thought to herself, removing the stupid smile from her face to turn her head and see Jeanette arriving. She was late.

Leon huffed as he dragged his Orange 2x12 combo off the back of the van, with Emil the bassist giving it a helpful push into his arms. One day, he thought to himself, we'll be famous enough to have roadies. If he'd been speaking out loud there would have been a tinge of bitterness in his voice. Since playing with the band, he'd already been propositioned by a few touring bands who already were enjoying a bit of success. But Leon wasn't in any position to go off touring just yet. For one thing, he was tide in to renting an apartment with a housemate, and for another thing he hadn't made a clean break with the university just yet. So fame and fortune would have to wait. Unless, of course, the band he was currently with, Coalmine Canary, managed to strike it big within the next few months.

He hauled the heavy amplifier through the stage door which was held open by a rather rough looking Polack - perhaps one of Emil's many cousins?? - past the various utility rooms, through the wings and onto the stage. He set it down next to a bunch of other stuff that had been brought in. Hal was busily setting up his own drum kit. Leon himself was less fussy. He'd leave it to the house team to mic up his amp; the always did a good enough job.

Two more trips later, he'd brough in his guitar, a backup guitar, and his flight-case pedalboard. Not that he ever actually flew anywhere with it, but it was a heck of a lot easier than organising his rig of 8 different effects pedals each time they went to play somewhere.

Making one last trip out to the van to see if anyone needed any help with their stuff, he bumped into Kyle - the singer - just outside the door.

"Hey K," he said, stretching out his arms and flexing the tension out of his back. "You catch that doco about the Hydron Collider last night?"

"No man I didn't," Kyle replied. "I didn't think there was anything new to learn about it after you talked my face off about the article in New Scientist about it. Geez, I didn't even know you read stuff like that."

"I don't usually," Leon shrugged, "it was Steve's. He buys it every now and them hoping to see some new discovery that disproves evolution."

Kyle shuddered, "Yeah OK...just spare me alright. How that guy doesn't drive you nuts..."

"Who says he doesn't?" Leon smirked, "I'm trying to move out."

Leon's eyes averted sideways for a moment, as he noticed a girl with distinctive red hair hanging around the side of the building. Seems a bit early for people to be turning up for the show; they weren't even serving drinks inside yet. (Although Leon intended to make that change as soon as all the gear was set up.) His eyes lingered on her for a moment, before he felt a light slap on his shoulder from Kyle.

"Dude focus," Kyle teased. "You gonna be ready to soundcheck in fifteen."

"Don't worry about me man," Leon grunted, "as long as Emil finds the jack socket on his bass amp instead of his own butt-hole, we'll be ready."

A muffled, thickly accented protest came from the back of the van; "I heard that."

Jeanette must have been a good five minute walk down the road, taking her time as she usually did. Sighing, Evie shook her head with a light sigh, her eyes caught one of the band member's who gazed at her for a few moments before his friend caught his attention once more. What was he looking at? Was she in the way? .. Surely not. Looking down at the floor as she waited for her friend, she saw a guitar lead which had been left on the floor. No one seemed to have noticed it laying there. It wasn't exactly hard to see... the cable was bright red like the rest of their leads. Walking over slowly, Evie flicked a red strand of hair from her pale face, making both of her blue eyes visible as she bent over hesitantly to pick up the fancy looking red lead on the floor before standing back up straight to walk over to a band member.

"Excuse me, you seem to have dropped a guitar lead.."Evie said quietly, yet loud enough for the man closest to her to hear. The man she addressed herself to was the one who had been staring at her a few moments ago. Advancing a little towards him, she kindly extended her hand with the lead in it so he could take it. "Do you want it or would you like me to take take it in for you... I'm heading in there soon to set up your stage." A small but warm smile formed across her pale pink lips, her teeth gently chewing on the inside of her lip piercing. Was she nervous? 'Get a grip... He isn't going to eat you.' She thought to herself as she waited for an answer.

One of the other band members, the one who had been named as 'Emil' came out of the van with a jack socket in his hand. He seemed pretty pleased with himself as he jumped out of the van and head towards the the theatre doors. As he passed, "Oi oi!" could be heard as he shouted teasingly without a moments thought before entering the theatre. Evie's cheeks immediately went a shade pinker, soon vanishing as he disappeared out of sight. What was wrong with her... She wasn't normally this nervous around people. Maybe it was just the stress of starting a new job... Yeah; that was probably why.. She hoped.

Jeanette was just sitting in her room watching wizard of oz. She loved movies that creeped her out, and it just so happens that the witch was the creepiest person she had ever heard of. She usually ended up screaming when the flying monkeys came, so now she was terrified of monkeys. When she looked at her clock she noticed she was soposed to be with Evie. "SHIZ!" She put on some sweats over her boy shorts and slid on a jacket over her pink tank top. She ran out of the door not even realizing that she was still in slippers. Soon she was in sight of the theatre and stopped running, because she started getting pains in her stomache. She grasped her stomache and breathed heavily. When she looked around she noticed that everone was staring at her.

"Tootsie!" She yelled and hugged her best friend Evie, who she called Tootsie.

As Kyle went back into the building, Leon pulled a leather wristband out of his jacket, which had a slitted patch on it for holding guitar picks. He was fastening it onto his wrist when he heard someone approach, and the girl's voice. Looking up, he saw that it was the girl who'd been standing a little further down. From close up he could now see that she was astonishingly pretty, and seemed to be trying to be nice. Of course, she wouldn't be the first person to hang around by the stage door to try to 'get in with the band' to earn kudos for the night ahead. But of course that theory went out of the window when she announced, to Leon's surprise, that she was going to be setting up the stage. Really? She was one of the crew? He certainly hadn't seen her around any of the times they'd played at this venue before. He would definitely have remembered...

"Hey thanks," he said, taking the lead and looping it over his shoulder, "you really on crew? I usually make a point of meeting the team before we set up, make sure we're on the same wavelentgh set-up-wise, y'know? I'm Leon."

He cringed as the bassist cannonballed past with his instrument slung and a few pieces of pro audio gear in a carrybag.

"Yeah and that graceless Polack is Emil." he added, wincing. "Pounding strings is about all he knows, so dialing a decent tone into his amp is gonna be all up to you...hell we'll be relying on you to make sure it's even switched on. Mine's the Orange combo, I usually just take a single mic off-centre to the cone."

He looked at her, trying to figure her out initially. She didn't have the cocky, 'I could be the one on stage if things had worked out differently' attitude that a lot of stage-hands had. In fact if anything she seemed slightly timid. But then, she also seemed young. So perhaps it was just because she was new, and hadn't been jerked around by enough wasted rock junkies to put on a tough front with the bands she worked for.

"It's a pretty basic rig," he finished with a shrug, "I'm sure you'll get the feel for it quickly enough."

He didn't notice the second girl come in from the side and grab the first girl in a dramatic embrace. Tootsie...?

Letting go of the lead, her hand fell to her side before retreating into her black loose cardigan sleeve which she wore over her v-neck gray 'Megadeth' sleevless shirt. Smiling, her nerves began to slowly vanish... He didn't seem too bad. In fact, he was being nice to her. She had heard many stories of bands being drunk snobs who didn't care for anyone but their guitar, their bottle and theirselves. She had already met a few who fit that theory well at band signing's. Surprisingly, this didn't put her off the job. Music was her passion, not so much the bands; though nice band were a bonus!

"That's alright." Evie said with a continuous small smile on her face. "I have just arrived and I'm new, that's probably why you haven't met me yet. I'm Evie. Nice to meet you, Leon."

Quickly, Evie glanced over her shoulder to see how far Jeanette had got up down the road. In a way, she was glad her friend was taking her time. Interested about how things worked and what the set up was, Evie looked back at the guitarist Leon in front of her and listened on. As she did so, she couldn't help but also observe him from her angle. Immediately, his dark rugged features jumped out to her. If he took off his sunglasses, she imagined him to be really quite handsome. Even with them on, it gave him a 'mysterious rocker' kind of look; if she had to put it in her own words. Under his shirt and jeans, he seemed to be pretty lean.. maybe toned! But that didn't surprise her.. Most guitarists were unless they were old and never moved around the stage.

Laughing lightly in a sweet chuckle, Evie nodded. "I'll remember to set up Emil's first then before checking everything else if it isn't already set up."

Knocked a little to one side, Evie almost jumped out of her skin as Jeanette arrived to dramatically embrace her. 'Why.. Why call me Tootsie now..' She thought to herself, rolling her eyes a little before hugging her back.. "Hey Jeanette.. You're late. What kept you?" Gently, she removed herself from the embrace before straightening herself back to her original state. "I need to head in soon to begin... Oh." Quickly, she turned to Leon, realising he must have no idea what was going on... Though it was pretty easy to guess.

"Sorry Leon, this is my best friend. Jeanette. Jeanette, this is Leon. He shall be performing tonight." Her small smile turned into one of awkwardness, realising he probably didn't care. After all, why would he? She was just working on the stage. "Umm, would you mind telling your friend Emil I shall be in to set up his amplifier and guitar in a minute, please? I won't be long." Biting the inside of her lip piercing one again, Evie gently pulled her best friend to one side. Why was she getting slightly grouchy? Was it the nerves again? Sighing; she closed her eyes and remained silent for a short second before reopening them and smiling a little to Jeanette. "So, explain yourself." Giggling a little, she waited to hear what excuse she had for being late this time.. It was pretty obvious why as she looked down to see her slippers.

So Leon was right, she was new to the venue. The gaffer, Jez, obviously knew what he was doing when he hired her...hopefully it had something to do with sound-tech knowledge. He raised a hand in greeting at the new arrival, somehow getting the impression that 'Jeanette' was not part of the crew. But it wasn't unusual for members of the crew to get their mates into the venue backstage and that sort of thing. And he was content to let the whole Evie/'Tootsie' thing go unexplained for now.

"Yeah I'll tell him." Leon said, "Cool to meet you, I'll catch you later OK?"

He raised his hand again and backed away, leaving the two girls to talk. There was nobody in the van so he assumed all the big stuff had been moved out. So he walked back through to the main stage where Hal and Emil were bantering about something.

"Hey and here he is!" Emil jeered. "Bit early in the day to be fishing for groupies compadre?"

"Who's fishing?" Leon retorted, "You been spending too much time in you're mama's kielbasa deli; got sausage on the brain."

"So why didn't you invite them in?" Hal said with a wry grin, spinning a drumstick in between his fingers and tapping his heel.

"That redhead's on the stage crew dipstick." Leon grunted, "If she hears you calling her a groupie then you might end up with a mysterious grounding issue in your rig and finish the night as a pair of smoking trainers."

"Man if I don't finish a night that way then it hasn't been a good night." Emil laughed.

"Well I tell you what," Leon said, "go as 'em to open up the bar and I'll buy you enough drinks to end the night however you like. Oh and she said she's comin' through to get you all set up so hey you don't even need to feel bad that you don't know your arse from your elbow when it comes to equipment."

Emil shrugged. "I know that you turn volume knob until testicles vibrate...what more there is to know?"

"Case in point." Leon chuckled, "Now get to the bar, and make mine a Jack and coke."

The bar was already opening up by the time Emil had arrived to ask. Stood behind was a six foot male, probably in his late teens. His name was Lucien. Dancing around behind the bar, he placed many glasses on the bar top, ready to fill them. "A'right men!" He yelled to the band members across the floor. "We're open if you wanna start drinkin'! T'will be on the house for the main preformers!" A large grin appeared across his face as he thew bottles up in the air to catch them before shaking them. "Aye, Petey!" Lucien yelled to the back on the bar. "Switch the radio on, will 'ye?" Before he knew it, the radio was on and he began dancing on the spot again until Emil arrived. "A'right mate, what can I get you?" He served him, putting on a little show before retreating away from the bar. No one was there yet.

Evie let Jeanette explain her reasons for being late, her eyes continuously glancing down at her watch on her wrist. Giggling at Jeanette's reasons, she thought it funny that anyone could get caught up by watching Wizard of Oz. Though she seemed perfectly normal talking to her best friend, her mind seemed to be else where. Ten minutes soon past and Evie raised a hand.

"Listen Jeanette, I really need to head inside to work. Come in later if you like, I'll try and get you in for free. Anyway, you should probably go home and change your shoes..." Looking down at her slippers, she laughed and gave her one last final hug. "Catch you later!"

Leaving her friend, Evie made her way inside the theatre to find her new boss waiting for her. "Ah! Evie, just on time. If you make your way to the stage, one of our other crew members, John shall show you what you need to do. You shall soon get the hang of it." Smiling, her boss left her to it and that's how Evie liked it. Swiftly, the young woman made her way through back stage until she made it to the main stage to find the band members talking and having a laugh. Leaving them to it, she walked past them and other to the guy who must have been John.

"Hey, you must be John.. I'm Evie. I'm guessing I'm just setting up the amps and mics?" Evie asked, smiling to her new work colleague. John seemed friendly enough, turning around to face her, her hugged her playfully. "Ah! Finally help is here!" he said cheerfully. "Yes, I shall leave you to do that whilst I do the lighting."

Knowing what to do, Evie began to do her job. Dodging in and out of wires and leads, hoping over them before plugging them, she made her way around the stage like it was the back of her hand. As she set up the microphone, she tapped into it. "Testing, testing, one, two. Arm, leg, elbow, knees." She spoke clearly down it before setting it back down. She seemed good at her job.

Emil raised an eyebrow as the rather spritely bartender. He seemed way to cheerful considering he was probably looking at a full evening shift. Perhaps he just loved his job. And in any case, Emil certainly wasn't going to argue with the offer of free drinks for the band...

"Very kind," he grunted with a not, "for now I think just one bier blonde and a Jack and cola."

He stretched his broad arms and twisted the stiffness out of his back, watching as the drinks were served.

"You are here all night yes?" he said, a crooked smile forming, "We come to bar and we ask for you yes?"

Leon found the spot on the stage where he’d be standing, and pushed his pedalboard along the floor into position. He then hoisted the mix stand around just behind it, extending it over the pedalboard and adjusting the height. There was no mic in it yet; the house team would provide those. He took the guitar lead that was on his shoulder, plugged it into the input of the first pedal on the board and trailed the other end over to the guitar stand. And that was pretty much his part of the set-up done.

He heard Kyle mumble a greeting to John, one of the crew, as he walked back onto the stage from the other wing holding a few sheets of paper and a bottle of water.

“Sorry,” Leon called out, “you missed the drinks order.”

“S’ok.” Kyle shrugged, holding up the water, “I’d better just stick with this for now. I’ve moved the set-list around a little, think it might work better. Just swapped Riptide and Trails around. Think we can still flow the second three songs together that way?”

“Not easily if you’re moving them around like that,” Leon frowned, “means I gotta put my guitar in drop D, then back to regular, then into drop D again.”

“Well we’ll give it a tryout when we soundcheck,” Kyle grinned, “you’ll just have to be quick on the tuning pegs.”

Leon rolled his eyes and paced up and down the stage a few times, trying to hear how the three songs could be blended in the different order. Suddenly there was a gentle pop from one of the amps as it was switched on. He looked back and saw Evie darting expertly back and forth between the different bits of gear, connecting leads and fastening cables together with ties. She was doing a pretty neat and efficient job of it. He’d rather expected to see her floating around behind John watching how he did it all. Guess you never can tell, he thought to himself.

His eyes wandered to the right where he saw Hal sat at the drum kit, picking at the tip of one of his sticks and blatantly staring at the girl as she went about her work. Rolling his eyes again, Leon sauntered over to Hal, approaching him from his blind-side, slipped a stick out of the bag hanging from the kit, and swiftly struck the crash cymbal. Hal jumped out of his skin, distracted as he was by his ogling, and almost fell off the chair.

“Yo lead-head.” Leon grunted, “Emil’s getting drinks, you better get down there if you want something.”

“Damn it man.” Hal said, recovering his composure. The drummer stood up and started to make his way down to the bar. As he passed Leon he murmered quietly in his ear, “Hope you don’t think that just because you saw her first it gives you any privileges.”

“Dude,” Leon chuckled, “with bandmates as ugly as you to compete with, who needs privileges. How about we let her get on with her work so we can be set up ready to do what we actually came to do, eh?”

Hal snorted and continued down towards where Emil was ordering the drinks. Leon rubbed his head thoughtfully, and glanced back over towards Evie. He had to admit she made quite an impression. It was almost a shame that she clearly knew exactly what she was doing; giving her a few pointers would have been an excellent excuse to strike up a conversation...

So instead he wandered back to his guitar, picked it up and plugged it into the lead running to the pedalboard. His amp wasn’t on yet, but even so he ran a few scales, planning how to link those three songs in the new order whilst also re-tuning his bottom string. That was the only downside to having a band front-man who didn’t play guitar; they sometimes made near impossible demands.

Looping ties around cables, Evie found herself on her knees on the stage having difficulty snapping off loose wire. Having been so focused on such a small task at hand, she completely forgot that the band members and John were present in the room. A loud crashing made the stage hand look up from her wire, to see Leon and the drummer talking. Smiling a little, she couldn't help but stare at them both for a moment or two as she observed their body language. Was it her or did she see slight conflict in their eyes before the drummer hoped of the stage to grab a drink. Shaking it off, her eyes returned to her bit of wire. 'This is useless..' She thought to herself, abandoning the pointless task to move onto something useful. Evie wondered around the stage, looking for the simplest of things to do. Surprisingly, she found hardly anything to do... Well, not anything she could do at that moment of time. She seemed to have done almost everything she was told to do. Quite shyly, the young female moved towards the only band member on the stage Leon, who seemed to be busy running scales on his guitar. She smiled as she advanced towards him, listening to his scales as he ran his finger quietly over the non-amplified guitar.

"Hey," Evie said a little shyly, standing near enough to him to hear his guitar. "That's a nice guitar you have there..." She found herself staring and smiling at the guitar for a few moments, examining it with lustful and amazed eyes as though she had never really spoken to someone who owned such a guitar. Snapping quickly out of her gaze, her eyes focused on his, returning to their normal friendly state. "Sorry.. I mean, I was going to ask you if you wanted your amplifier switched on. Maybe you guys could do a sound check? It's all set up as far as I know."

At the mention of the sound check, Evie noticed the drummer and Emil turn around from the bar across the floor with drink in their hands. How did they hear? Maybe her voice had echoed in the almost empty hall without her realising.

Leon looked up, suppressing an uneven grin as he saw Evie had come over to talk to him again. What a perfect time to have sent Hal away to get a drink. He straightened up slightly so she could get a better look at the guitar.

"Yeah that'd be awesome," he said, "I think Kyle's keen to get a sound-check in good and early, plus he's been dicking around with the setlist so we gotta adjust to the new goal posts. Fun stuff."

He looked down at his black Lace Helix Maya, and stopped played, taking his hand away from the fretboard to show her something.

"Yeah I should give you the heads up about this," he said with a grin, "in case you ever need to give the guitar's an intonation set-up during a gig. This is a Lace Helix, you don't see many of them around. It's the only guitar which has a deliberate 30 degree twist in the neck. Throws a lot of roadies who haven't seen one before, makes 'em think the wood had warped drastically or something."

He looked at her taking the information in. He could see from her eyes that she had a fertive mind and a keen interest in music technology. When Kyle had said fifteen minutes to sound check, Leon had though 'yeah right in your dreams', but actually Evie pretty much had everything to the point where they were just about ready to go. The only thing from preventing sound check from going ahead was Hal and Emil coming back with the drinks.

"So you planning to head off, come back and dress down the stage later," Leon said to her, "or you gonna stick around for the show? Maybe even work sound desk? I mean John's good on desk but when he's having a good time it's a little difficult getting his attention if we need something hiked up or down, y'know what I'm saying."

Amazed by his guitar, Evie listened to everything she told him. A 30 degree twist neck... Now that sounded familiar. Tilting her head to one side slightly, she got another good glance, taking in the beauty of the guitar.

"I've only ever read of such guitars in magazines.." Evie said with a small chuckle, twirling her thumbs around her index fingers absent mindedly. "I shall keep what you said in mind, thanks."

Glancing down at the two dand members down by the bar, Evie giggled a little as she shook her head. "They are certainly keen to start drinking... " She said quietly, hopeing this time they wouldn't hear her. Her eyes moved back to gaze at Leon, her right hand moving towards her hair to remove it from her face. Everyone had always told Evie that her eyes stood out the most, being bright blue they contrasted with her pale skin and red hair. They were certainly her best features, even though she didn't think so herself.

"I shall probably stick around, I'm interested to hear you guys play... Besides, it's not like I have anything else planned," Evie said, suddenly moving to her tiptoes to get a better look at John on the far side of the stage, doing something no one could see, which sent sparkes flying until it finally stopped. Raising an eyebrow, Evie let out one short chuckle as the corner of her lip lift once again into a smile. She had no idea what he was doing. "...and I doubt John would let me anywhere near the sound desk yet. Don't get me wrong, I would love to work on it, but.." Evie returned her gaze to Leon, giving him her full attention. "I'm still an amature in their eyes, which is fair." Feeling slightly stupid for no good reason, Evie looked down at the stage floor though her smile still remained, "Hah, anyway, I'll check with John if we can do a sound check soon." Quickly, the young stage hand made her way across the stage, towards her colleague.

Lucien slammed his hands down onto the bar top as his grin widened as soon as Emil ordered his first drinks. "And one biere blonde and a Jack n' cola you shalll get m'friend!" He exclamed before reaching down to grab a large pint glass to pour the beer into it, making sure the was plenty of froff ontop. Instead of getting an already made can if Jack and Cola, Lucien grabbed another pint glass and placed in onto the bar top. He bent down for a few moments behind the counter to stand back up with a big bottle of Jack Daniels and a bottole of Cola. "Now m'friend, let's make this night a gooden'." Lucien poured just over one quarter of the glass with Jack Daniels, filling the rest with coke. It was enough to make any man drunk. "I'm 'ere all night. You ask for me and I'll let'chu 'ave what ever you want free.. On one condition." Smirking he leaned across the bar once more, pushing the drinks to Emil. "You've gotta play good. Real' good." Regaining his posture behind the bar the bartender gave him one nod of the head and got back to work: placing glasses on the bartop.

"So you've read about it?" Leon said with a small smirk forming, "Well that's more than most stage techie's have done. Good."

He placed his hand back on the neck and played a little legato, continuing to loosen up his fingers from all the lifting and shifting. Looking up briefly, he noticed Evie looking at him, pushing a little hair out of her face daintily. For a crew member she sure seemed friendly and interested; at least, he found himself liking imagining that she was interested. Even among the band it was rare that he could have a conversation about the intricacies of guitars and pro audio with anyone who had any insight. Kyle was a fantastic singer but never saw the need to learn about mics and amps, Emil was a steady bassist but was also as blunt a tool as they come, and Hal only had his drums to worry about; the house team always mic'ed them up. So when there was no house team, Leon was really the only one with the first clue of how anything worked.

Evie, on the other hand, was clearly bright and on the ball. He only hoped that being so easy on the eye she wouldn't get too much harassment from the clientele of these sorts of venues. Then again, this was a theatre, not some sleezey club.

It was while their eyes met momentarily that he realised he was still wearing his sunglasses, which was rediculous as it was relatively dark in the hall, so he looked down and removed them, setting them on a stool nearby. He looked back at her and gave her a slanted smile.

"No problem," he said, "well it's always handy to have someone available in the wings in case something goes wrong stage side. I'm sure you'll do great."

He gave an a-ok gesture when she indicated she'd go off and get things ready for a sound-check, and watched her as she left. For a split second every now and then he glanced to see if Hal and Emil were looking at him looking at her. He couldn't hack any more of the banter. I mean heck they'd all seen a great many good-looking girls coming to their gigs and trying to hang out with the band afterwards. But this Evie stood out somehow; not just because of her striking looks, but because of how she provided such a breath of fresh air from the usual shower of air-headed groupies.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emil's eyes grew bigger and bigger as he watched the bartender serve the drinks in a manner he'd never witnessed before. A quarter of a pint of whiskey? What a generous guy.
"Well I play fantastic for sure," Emil said, nodding appreciatively, then pointed at Leon up on the stage, "but whiskey is for him so I make no promise, ah?"
Hal turned up just slightly too late.
"Hey amigos." he trilled, "Too late to at another beer to that order?"
He too took in the flamboyant bartender, watching how he theatrically served the drinks, and for the first time ever feeling a tinge of regret that he wasn't on this side of the stage tonight! If the bartender was going to be like this with everyone, there was a real risk the audience would be divided between watching the band and watching the show begind the bar!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Before long Hal and Emil were heading back and getting a little too close, so Leon averted his eyes back to his hand and continued practicing some song links. As he was halfway through a legato scale his amp came on, and the last half of it sounded across the stage with a satisfying crunch.

"Hey," he called over to Kyle, who was still analysing the set list, as if there was anything to be achieved from doing that. "looks like we'll be good to go for a soundcheck any minute now after all."

"John..!" Evie called as she moved away from Leon towards her fellow crew member. "Is it okay if they do a sound check pretty soon? I think they are pretty much all set up."

Passing by Leon's Orange Combo amplifier, she clicked the 'on' the switch which automatically amplified his guitar within the theatre hall. Evie couldn't help but look over her shoulder quickly to get a glance of Leon and his beautifully made electric guitar. He seemed like such a nice guy, Evie thought. He seemed to know what he was on about, unlike a lot of guitarist she knew who seemed to always make out they knew loads... When in fact, they knew very little. Being the type of girl Evie was, she generally tended to nod her head and pretend she was interested in pointless conversations. But with Leon... It was actually interesting! He didn't seem like a snobby kind of guy, who liked to show of his knowledge and ability. No, he seemed down to earth with a friendly touch which pleased the young female stage hand greatly. Something else intrigued Evie... Leon's eyes and face in general. Maybe she was just crazy, but she felt as though there was a lot more too this guitarist that met the eye. His dark rugged features seemed there for a reason.. His eyes held his mysterious side. Hell no, Evie seemed to be going insane. He was a normal man.. That was all. Maybe the stage lighting had sent her a little bit... 'cuckoo'.

"Yeah, all is ready to go!" John called back to Evie, straightening up as he kicked a bit of wire out of the way. Very unprofessional, Evie thought. "Oi! Guys! Make sure you are careful when moving to the back of the stage! There are a few loose wires.. They should be fine as long as you don't stand on them or mess with them, you hear me?!" He shouted across the theatre, making sure each one of the band members heard him.

A little shyly, unsure whether or not John would be insulted by her upcoming offer, Evie advanced towards the wires raising an eyebrow. "...Would you like me to look at those wires for you..? They seem a little unsafe..-" She was interrupted by her crew members loud overwhelming voice.

"Nope, I don't want your pretty little hands touching those wires, alright? They'll be fine-" He was cut off by Evie's quiet voice.

"I really think you should let me check them out.. They simply need rewiring-" Evie was once again interrupted, as she glanced over to the wires, knowing exactly what the problem was. They were dodgy, only because this so called expert in front of her had wired them completely wrong, allowing them to send the odd spark or two flying making them very dangerous.

"I said no, Evie." John said firmly, making his decision clear and final. Walking past her with a light frown on his face, he called the band members together. "Come on men, put your drinks down for two seconds and lets do this sound check. Shall not be long until people start arriving."

Evie couldn't help but sigh at her fellow colleague... He was making such a huge mistake. Unable to touch the wires without getting in trouble with John, Evie remained on the side of the stage to see if any changes in equipment or settings were needed. Quietly, the red-head sat on an amplifier to the side and watched how the band came together on the stage. She felt quite upset that she had to question John's judgement on her first day... She didn't want him to get a first impression of a "little wannabe know-it-all"... But she knew how dangerous those wires were. Just by looking at them, it was so very obvious. Trying to take her mind away from it, Evie sighed and watched the band do their sound check.

The bartender chuckled at Emil. He simply loved bringing happiness to people even if it involved simply giving them free drinks for the night. It wasn't like he was paying for it anyway. "I'm sure you'll be great t'night m'friend! Give the crowd what they want.....Get those fan girls screamin' for more and I don't just mean ye' groupies!" Lucien spoke energetically as he moved up and down the bar to gather glasses and clean them. He looked up at the stage to the man who ordered the whiskey talking to a pretty young lady. Lucien grinned and leaned in close to Emil as if he was to tell him a secret. "Who does he think he is; does he expect to get that girl or somethin'?" Lucien sniggered and stood up straight his eyes now on Evie. "He ain't got a chance in hell." Seeing Hal, the Bartenders full cheerful smile returned and began to prance around the bar. "Never too late m'friend!" He energetically poured Hal a beer to watch both men walk away contently back to the stage with their hands pull of beverages. This would be a fun night, he was sure to see some sights enter the theatre with that band playing.Most of them were probably going to go home just as drunk as the Band themselves.

Emil inclined his ear as the barman murmered something to him, so happening in doing so to turn his head towards the stage, seeing Leon talking to Evie.

"I think he was cunning plan sending us to get drinks." Emil huffed. He chuckled at Lucien's suggestion that he didn't stand a chance, and added, "Maybe after his drink his chances stand not so good."

Hal thanked Lucien for the drink, raising it in a toast gesture, and followed Emil back towards the stage.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Awesome!" Kyle exclaimed, clapping his hands together and stepping up to the microphone. "Let's just do those three songs; more than we need to sound-check but it means we can figure out the links at the same time."
"Whatever you say." Leon replied with a mock salute. He looked over at Emil and Hal arriving back onto the stage. Emil was shaking his head with a dumb grin on his face, trying to make reference to Evie who was now on the other side of the stage. Leon shook his head in return and shrugged, 'What?' He took the pint glass which was passed to him and looked at it quizzically. "Jack and coke?"
"Right." Emil said, "That's what you've got."
Leon raised an eyebrow and gave the drink a sniff. Yep, definitely whiskey in there...in good proportion too.
"What were they running some sort of promotion at the bar?"
"No, just crazy happy barman." Emil grinned, slinging his bass over his shoulder and taking his position on the other side of Kyle. He plucked a few notes and ramped up the volume on his bass until he could hear himself.
"OK, John?" Kyle called out, unable to see if John was actually up in the sound desk yet. "What do you want, she we just start running through a few songs and let you do your thing while we play?"
John had made his way to the sound desk, sitting at his stool. Twiddling with 'the patch bay' and the 'chanel strips', he called from where he worked to the lead singer, Kyle. "Ready when you are, play your songs and I'll adjust the settings. Shout if something doesn't sound good, alright guys?" Lowering his head once again, he got on with his job as the band began to play.
Evie watched intently to the band playing, feeling the amplifer she was sat on vibrate underneith her. Her eyes glaced every now and then to the dodgy wiring at the back. It was funny that something so 'unsignificant', as John put it, bothered her so much. 'Ignore it, Evie.. It won't hurt.' Repeating those words in her hand, she tried to convince herself to ignore it. By doing so, Evie tried to give her full attention to the band as they played their first song. It was good, very good infact! Kyle's voice was amazing; a very talented singer. The drum was also great, she couldn't pick any faults and besides, percussion wasn't her forte. The bassist Emil was also very talented as he strumed on his bass, energetically bouncing up and down. But Leon's guitar playing stood out the most. His riffs and picking were pitch perfect, his hand seemed to glide up and down the fretboard as if he had been doing so his entire life. He seemed perfectly at ease with his guitar, as though she was something he loved and cherished her... Treating her by stroking her long neck with the tips of his finger like she deserved.
Snapping out of the trance their sweet music made, the first song ended and Evie stood up from the amplifier. Discreetly, she made her off the stage and towards the back of the hall, where she listened to their next song from the audiences point of view. It always sounded different off stage. Their next song made Evie's left foot begin to tap, allowing her head to casually bob to the beat. Now this was definitely her kind of music.
She couldn't help but the notice the bartender watch the band with a wide grin on his face. The grin never seemed to leave his face. It made her chuckle in a way, how someone could enjoy their job so much. Her eyes tore between the bartender and the band... Both of them were entertaining.
Lucien watched the Band up on stage play their songs from behind the bar. The radio in the background was unhearable as the massive amplifiers streamed out music from their instruments. The bartender headbanged to himself whilst with with a spring in his step he walk out the back to switch the 'muted' radio to return back behind the bar where he got a good view. As the first song finished and the second began; the girl who had caught most of the guys attention walked across the hall. Lucien could understand why everyone had their eyes on her. She was certainly pretty yet she didn't seem the type to show off her looks. Infact she seemed a little quiet and shy. The young bartender continued to dance on his own behind the bar and glance at the pretty stage hand with the corner of his eye. His dancing seemed to have caught the girls attention a little. Grinning foolishly he continued but only to give her a crazy smile and a few more moves to show off. He loved the attention of pretty ladies.
By the time the first song was well underway, Leon was starting to get into the performance frame of mind. The first of the three songs was the first of the original set, so it was in it's usual place. But by the end of the song, he was so carried away that it wasn't until the last note was struck that he remembered the next two songs had switched. Thinking quickly, he ran a scale up to the top open 'E', struck it, then thumbed the bottom string lightly and tuned it up to match. The transition was barely noticeable.
Looking up at Kyle and seeing the singer nod, he struck the first chord of the second song; a slightly pacier rock progression in a major key, to follow from the first song being a bit moodier. Hunching down into the guitar, he started to pace back and forth a little, getting into the groove. Even though there was no audience, he figured showmanship was something that needed to be practiced as much as musical technique.
As they broke into the chorus, he stepped up to his microphone to provide the backing vocals, and saw Evie standing in the middle of the hall listening. He smirked discreetly; she may not have been invited onto the sound-desk, but she was down there doing half of the sound-desk operator's job; listening to the sound from the audience's point of view. Hopefully she'd pass on her thoughts to John...and hopefully John would listen.
Leon also noticed for the first time the bartender going a little bit crazy. Suddenly the unusual serving of Jack Daniels made a bit more sense.
The chorus ended and went back into the riff, and Leon marched over to Kyle and posed with him a little. It was safe to say that for a sound-check, he was starting to enjoy himself. It also amused him to notice Emil grimacing in concentration; evidently the change in the order of songs had thrown the bassist more than the other members of the band...
Moving back into position he looked back out over the imaginary 'audience', but his eyes returned naturally to the only person standing there; Evie. Caught up in the moment he couldn't resist throwing her a smooth wink as they played on.
