Retha: Machines and Magic

Magic and technology compete with each other to win the approval of the people of this world. This roleplay begins in the Kingdom of Anastoria, but who knows where it will end?

763 readers have visited Retha: Machines and Magic since MidnightFlight created it.

Introduction

Updates and Notes

This roleplay has many characters. I'm not going to stop accepting characters, but when you join, keep in mind that because there are many characters, you won't always get the spotlight.

If you're having trouble working your way into the roleplay (I know it's hard with many characters), drop me a PM and we'll work something out.

If there is a religion/deity/group/location or otherwise that you wish to add to this world, please PM me. I left it mostly blank so that players and other people could contribute.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but I do want around two paragraphs minimum post-wise. That's about twelve lines, not including the page break or empty line. If you're having trouble reaching this posting minimum, try describing your character's actions, emotions, and mannerisms along with their dialogue. What gestures does your character normally make when they speak or want to emphasize? Things like that. A little scenic description never hurt either.

Setting

This is a steampunk/fantasy roleplay set in an alternate Earth that we’ll just call Retha to save us infinite confusion. It will have a TV-series like plot, that is, one short plot after another within a general, open plot, some of which can be suggested by players. There will also be “events” to keep things interesting. The events will be directed by NPC’s as played by me, but the characters will have the freedom to do what they want. There is always room for character plots and unexpected twists. I expect lots of humor, drama, and action. Emphasis on the humor!

This may or may not eventually become a humongous fantasy world, but for now… the sprawling, prosperous kingdom of Anastoria is located in the province of Corbele, which is surrounded by the Loperian Sea on three sides. All of this is located on the continent of Paldona, which rests in the Kunel Ocean and serves as part of the dam that forms the Loperian Sea. Naturally, detailed information on the locations in the Kingdom of Anastoria will be revealed in the places tab. Other places in Corbele include the Kingdom of Ciredia, other Kingdoms, several cities, towns, and villages, but we won't focus on those just yet.

The time is early spring, while the wind is still a bit chilly but the flowers are blooming and the sun's warming the earth. The Month is, more specifically, May.

Image

Here is a close up of Corbele. I only marked the most important locations on the map, so there's more to it than what's there.

General Plot

The main plot revolves around the conflict between magic, technology, and religion, and how people interact with each other based on these three subjects. It’s also about the conflict between the Kingdoms of Anastoria and Ciredia. This is just the plot in general; I’ll be focusing more on the smaller chapter/episode esque plots and events that will happen as the story progresses. The main plot can only end in one of three ways; it’s up to the characters to decide which fate will fall upon the two Kingdoms.

Events and Other Plots

This section will be edited as the story progresses.

Event 1: Every building has been swathed in colorful decorations; every person has baked, cooked, and pulled out their best wines and ales; everyone has exchanged their normal clothes for more colorful ones created just for the occasion. The market located in the center of the Kingdom’s main city, Anastor, is much more colorful than usual. It’s even rumored that gypsies will perform for money and pirates will set up their shops in the market and sell foreign plunder. People from all over the land have been invited to attend the festival, regardless of their status in relation to the kingdom, and everyone is in high spirits. The annual festival is one of general celebration; celebrating the King and Kingdom’s good health and prosperity; celebrating the Kingdom’s tolerance for outsiders, forming new allies, gaining more citizens as people who like the look of the city settle down permanently.

The only problem is, amongst these strangers lurks an assassin who tried to kill the King only a week prior to the festival. The only thing known about the assassin was that he was a native Anastorian and a magic user, as told by the clues he left behind. Everyone expects the assassin to attempt another strike, but despite the danger, the King has insisted on attending the festival. His personal guard has greatly increased and a magnificent bounty has been offered to anyone who can bring him the assassin, alive. A smaller fortune has been offered to anyone who can bring him important clues as to the assassin’s identity, mission, or whereabouts.

History

The Kingdoms of Anastoria and Ciredia were once one kingdom, before steam-powered technology was well-known and used. The young King had just married a Princess from a neighboring Kingdom to form a peace treaty; they existed for ten years in peace and prosperity, their lands joined. And then steam-powered technology began to make its debut all over Paldona. The King had what is known as a mechanic’s mind, he liked to make things and take things apart to see how they worked. He fell in love with steam-powered technology and immediately introduced it into his Kingdom.

The Queen, who believed strongly that technology was a sin against her Goddess, Cire, implored her husband to remove the creations from the kingdom and thus cleanse it of all sin. Her husband simply laughed. While he believed that other people’s religions and deities did exist, he didn’t believe IN them, and thus, did not fear their wrath or believe that technology was a sin. The tension between the two grew within a matter of months; eventually, after many arguments, the King finally told the Queen to go make her own Kingdom and wallow in her hate. So she did.

By this time, some of those that had been originally wary of technology had already decided, like the queen, that technology was a sin against nature and/or their various deities; there were very few religions who accepted technology as anything other than a sin. Magic was widely incorporated into religion, so those who disdained technology were, for the most part, magic users. There were also those more practical magic users who would lose their respect, power, and jobs if certain types of technology took the place of magic.

All these people the Queen took with her when she left the Kingdom and claimed her Father’s lands, splitting the Kingdom neatly in two. It’s been that way for ten years.

Kingdom of Anastoria

Colors: Golden and bright Green.

Insignia: A dragon with it's neck and tail stretched out to form a circle, wings half extended, with a cog gear in the center of the "circle" made by it's neck and tail.

Flag: Yellow and green striped shield, with the kingdom insignia in white in the center of the shield.

Culture: Just a little bit about the culture, in case you guys aren't sure. The view on the equality between men and women varies in the world; some religions state that they're more or less equal, while some people simply view them as more or less equal. In the Kingdom of Anastoria, men and women are considered equals. Women can do what they like; men can do what may be considered women's chores without being spurned by others. People can do what they want. Also, when it comes to "Noblemen" and "Peasants", there ARE those who are clearly Noble born and take pride in their blue blood, but it does not make them superior or inferior to anyone else, as much as some of them wish it did. Servants and etc are paid well to do their job, and while they may suffer verbal abuse from unappreciative people, they don't HAVE to. They can quit and get a job somewhere else if they wish with no stains on their reputations.

Besides this, the kingdom is a mixture of religious views, cultures, fashion, etc, with Victorian (naturally) being most prominent, and strangely, Arabian/Hindu fashion being second most prominent. (No, this doesn't mean you have to dress according to this. Wear what you want.)

As for the rules of the kingdom, use common sense. No killing, thieving, invading one's home or abusing another. No harassing. Although, unfortunately, people are allowed to be verbally rude with no repercussions.

Groups

Druids (Cire's Followers)

The term was once applied to mages who dealt solely with elemental and “nature” magic, but now when people hear the term “Druid”, they think of those who faithfully worship Cire, the Goddess of Magic, or more commonly known as the Divine Enchantress. They are feared throughout the kingdom, because only Druids with great skill are accepted as Druids; any weaker person who dares to go by the name comes to a mysterious end. They are also feared for what some believe is their over-zealous devotion to Cire. They deal in all types of magic and firmly believe that technology is a sin against Cire and life itself. Why they decided that technology was evil is unknown; it may be that they misinterpreted Cire’s desire that they toil with their own two hands and avoid laziness at all cost, as technology tends to make work and life easier for people and supposedly demean the value of honest work.

Druids normally wear apparel with the color royal purple in it somewhere, which is the color commonly associated with magic. Somewhere on them, either in their clothes, on their skin as a tattoo, or their jewelry, they will have Cire’s insignia, which is a single eye superimposed over a crescent moon. There are many variations of this insignia, but it’s always unmistakably Cire’s.

Techpriests (these guys worship Tesla) (Created/Submitted by CoordinatorKurita)

The Techpriests appeared shortly after the advent of steam technology. These men and women are all gifted engineers and have an almost inborn understanding of technology. They are nether feared nor loved by the average people. They are rarely seen outside their temple-factories as they only leave to investigate technological developments that their own artificers have yet to uncover or if some factor is so important that they must leave the temple to deal with it. They have a deep reverence for information and see its destruction as a sin. They have no love for magic seeing it as an obsolete institution that only the select few can wield and will pass into obscurity as technology allows the average man to ascend over his limitations. As for their dealings with Cire's followers they would prefer to exist peacefully and advance technology to it heights, however they will defend their temple-factories and themselves with lethal force if necessary.

Techpriests attire themselves in crimson/red robes. They also wear a bronze twelve toothed gear the symbol of their god around their necks. They also standout from normal people due to the mechanical enhancements to their bodies.

Deities

Cire

Known as the Goddess of Magic, or more commonly as the Divine Enchantress, in many religions she reigns over magic, but in some she also reigns over magical creatures and beings, and/or nature. Her appearance varies, but she is most commonly portrayed as wearing deep purple and possessing silver or white hair. In every religion involving her or variations of her, she has a third eye on her forehead which is the source of all magic, everywhere. In some cultures she is considered to be a form of "Mother Nature", dealing only in natural magic.

Tesla (Created/Submitted by CoordinatorKurita)

Known to by the masses as the Machine God. He is the patron of engineers and scholars. His appearance is that of a human male made entirely of clockwork and a massive steam engine. Deep inside him is a massive twelve toothed gear that controls all his movements. Inscribed on this gear are all the knowledge of technology including what has been and all yet to be built. His body is a deep crimson color.

Magic

You can do what you want with it, I only require four things, which are listed below. Note that necromancy is allowed, but only on animals, not people. Whoever brings an animal back to life, controls that animal.

--Your eyes glow when you use magic.
--You must be within hearing and/or seeing distance to use magic on a person/object/thing.
--You can’t control someone with magic. (A.K.A Powerplaying)
--Using magic drains your strength. Using more than you have kills you.

Otherwise, you have freedom to use it how you want. IIf you’re not sure what you’re doing with magic is appropriate or not, PM me before you do it and I’ll tell you.

Technology

You can’t really make rules for this, but here are some guidelines.

There are no computers, cellphones, etc, because that’s considered “advanced” technology, and we don’t want advanced technology. =D

Guns are around, but they’re not common. At least, not as common as traditional weapons. You won’t find them in a market stall; you’ll have to search for them and be willing to pay a lot for them. Unless you can make them yourself, then there’s no problem.

I’ll add more here as I see fit.

Races

You can be any race you want; you can be an existing race, like an Elf, or you can make your own. I only require that:

--They fit within the roleplay universe. No aliens, sorry.
--They aren’t ridiculously over powered.
--If they’re hybrids, they’re only the offspring of TWO different races/species. Not three, not four, not twenty.

Rules

--Follow RPG’s rules.
--Don’t Godmod; it’s lame.
--No explicit or r-rated material please.
--Your character must balance out. You must have at least one physical weakness, but I expect more. D:<

NPC's

Harpy (Bar Owner)
City/Royal Manor Guards
Etc.

[Sariyah Azani; Screeching Harpys Inn and Bar, Anastor]

Finally merging unto the streets after exiting the dim lighted alley’s they had trudged through, Sariyah and her companion forcefully waded through the growing crowd of merry drunks and drinkers. Unknowingly blocking their way, a large group of onlookers had gathered to watch the gypsies dance in their bizarre ways. But seeing as there was no luxury of time to spare, these two shady characters could only push and shove their way towards the end of the narrow road –hoping to get across without much incident or attention.

While the intricate moves of the performers were entrancing enough, the ways of gypsies was never something Sariyah could ever find herself getting into. Caught complain about the overwhelming noise of strange brass like instruments and rising incense, she found herself unable to think out-loud but continuing nonetheless. -Swift footsteps readily turning into sluggish strides with each man pushed aside until they had freed themselves from the large mass of bodies.

Given a brief moment of respite, the constant hurried pace these two strangers were in hastily declined as they approached the venue of another meeting. –A modest tavern and inn run by a shrewish harpy who catered to the rowdier folk in town. Being within earshot of the bar, every step they took away from the crowd deadened the foreign noise –which was instead replaced by a more familiar sound, the fighting of bitter men. And overpowering the smell of scented smoke was hard liquor –lingering among sticky cobblestone floor.

“Is this really the place?” Sariyah questioned the man but somehow, already knew the answer she would receive.

“Just follow my lead and act accordingly.” The Dark Hooded man spoke to her as they casually waited outside the tavern to talk. “Now, before we enter, I want you to take off that turban and veil of yours to avoid suspicion –I don’t care how ugly you are.” He jested but somehow managed to carry the same serious tone of voice.

In but one fluid motion of her hands, Sariyah had removed the veil shielding her face from all –and no one who looked upon this girl would ever know of her as a druid.

“Do you require anything else before we continue stranger?” She spoke coyly, knowing that her stunning features would catch this man off guard. Aside from the grotesque scar that ran from her cheek to ear, she was still fairly beautiful in an eerie sort of way.

“Y-Yes,” The Dark Hooded man spoke slightly amazed, “Refer to me as Mathias and don’t mess things up.”

Propping the heavy wooden door open, the two made their way inside the tavern –looking happier than even the drunkest among these patrons. Taking a few empty seats beside the bar, the Hooded Man raised his hand in slight gesture to the barmaid –who immediately caught wind of him.

“What will it be this time?” The rather hulking woman spoke with a slight brutish tone fitting that of a hardened man.

“Honey and milk for the lady, and a glass of worm-weed on me.” The man forced a sheepish smile, though little of it could be seen behind his hood.

Moments later, the woman from the bar handed them their drinks –along with a key to the upper floor which read “12”.

“It’s on him.” She spoke, her long thick fingers pointing towards the solitary man in the corner.

“Then I suppose we should thank him.” Nodding his head, the Dark Hooded Man looked back to Sariyah and signaled for her to move.

In but a negligible amount of time, she had made her way from the bar to sit at the table of the Arl –sliding the rickety chair back and propping herself atop of it.

“Jared Borkin, I presume.” Though but a whisper, her sweet silky voice could still be heard in the clamorous bar of hooligans.

“If I remember correctly, you have something that belongs to me?”

(Bartolomeo, Mad Fashions, Anastor)

"Agnok, Bombur! If it isn't my two favourite gnomes. The apples of my eyes, the best customers I've ever had. Come in come in, who's your new friend."

“Lawd above! Always a pleasure, Emily. We have spent a fair amount of funding, back in the day, here haven’t we Agnok? Are mate here is called Captain Bartolomeo, or something of the sort.”

“But you can just call me Bartolomeo” A thin smile was on his face as he moved to take the lady’s hand. That is until she saw the rifle that he had hanging from his side.

"Ooooh is that the new Grietchen clockwork model 38 rifle? I've been dying to see one, may I?"

Emily then escorted the two gnomes to the armour clothing section, pointing out numerous items of interest before returning her eyes to the rifle.

“Aye it is shoots twenty two times in a minute, but for that to happen it has to be in good condition. And for it to be in good condition requires ALOT of maintenance. I don’t use it often and I have to clean it once a day, at least. But it’s silent, deadly, far reaching, and fast. Cost me a small fortune it did.”

He handed over the gun and pointed the fine series of clockwork and springs that enabled it to do its job. They chatted about how to improve it, and other models they have seen. But Emily soon got carried away and started sketching ways to improve it and Bartolomeo listened with great interest.

Emily reverently held the rifle in her hands. "Grietchen is a genius, but a little conservative for my tastes, don't ya know?" She looked down the barrel examining it. "He never lets these things shoot too fast, but any engineer worth their salt can modify one of his to shoot at least twice as fast, unfortunately that tends to make the parts wear down at least three times as fast." She quickly sketched the gear system out and pointed out the changes that needed to be made. "Still, it's a might handy to have more speed when you really need it don't ya know?"

She looked over at the gnomes. "Hey! I told you to stay away from the cuff links! I blew a mannequin's hand off the other day!"

(Astaron Gethalan, Astaron's Office, Anastor)

Astaron sat behind his desk, waiting for the tech priest and the fellow from the University to make their way around the building, but for some reason they didn't seem to be coming.
Ah, well, they must have thought better of having an interview with a vampire. I'll just give them a little more time, in case they got sidetracked, and then I'll head to bed.

Astaron pulled the cord again, to close the door to his office, and waited... and slowly, dozed off.
After a small amount of time, there was a knocking on his door, which caused him to jerk awake.

Ah, that must be them.

From his seat behind his desk in the darkened room, he pulled the cord which caused the door to swing slowly open, and peered out at the three figures in the street. Two of them appeared to be children, by their size, and one was somewhat taller.

What. That is not them.

In a tired voice, again without specifically inviting them inside (one could never be too cautious), Astaron asked, "What are you children doing, knocking on my door? I think you must be at the wrong address."

Chris bowed to the man as humbly as he could. "Ahh Master Astaron, a pleasure to meet you. I am Christopher St. Claire," he gestured to his seven foot brother/bodyguard, "this is my brother Malcolm, and our associate Mr. Nobbs." He patted Nobbs on the back in a friendly manner.

"In my home town I'm an engineer of some repute but have recently taken to wandering. Nobbs here lives within this fine city and has designed a marvelous machine. An instant likeness machine he calls it, alas, he has neither money, space, or the ability to assemble it, and while I have space for basic assembly and money for parts, I do not have the machines needed to make the parts it will need."

"This is where you come in, we'd like to do business with you, and while Nobbs obviously has control over to include you in our business venture, I was thinking I might be able to pay you for the use of your workshop and machines. Perhaps we could come in and discuss our business in more comfortable surroundings?"

Hm . . . looks like I'm not needed here, was the final thought of The Elder before he proceeded to recede away into deep thought, curling his branches around him and bunching up his roots.

Meanwhile, at the fair, a figure was entering from the side opposite the king’s castle; this figure wore a large, silken white cloak with red lining, covering his entire skinny frame, and shadowing his face. He walked with a short, nervous (but determined), silent and unobtrusive stride, and occasionally glanced around, to find . . . nothing. He was heading towards the castle, which was still quite a ways off. Once he reached there without a disturbance, he would find the princess and present her a gift; a very fine gift, indeed.

“Pish posh madam, we know EXACLY what we’re doing with these...um... did you say these were explosive?”

“Aye she did, but Emily the point of the rifle is accuracy, if you want speed, Bartolommeo’s pistols are the fastest in Corbele! But if you put a stronger main spring wouldn’t you be able to make it stronger? Bombur! We could put in on of the crystals in the clockwork!”

“That’s brilliant! A magic gun! Old chap were going to be rich!”

“You are not putting your magic crystals in my guns!” Bartolomeo slung the rifle on his shoulder” You two can’t even keep your engine from blowing up, why would I trust you with my guns?”

“That’s beside the point Bartolomeo, combining magic and technology has never been tried before on the scale! And the only reason it isn’t getting any better is that we’re lacking the right kind of energy! Or so we think. Now anyways Bartolomeo, me and Bombur must really be getting back to Thorin, god knows what he done with the Carriage” *shudders* “It’s been a pleasure once again Emily and we will call upon you again soon”

“Alright then, you two go ahead, me and Emily still need to alter the rifle and I want to look at some of the clothing she has here.”

(Nobbs, Astaron's Workshop, Anastor)
((Sorry for the delay; it's been a while since I've been able to log on to this site))

Nobbs peered awkwardly at the vampire and his dark office. Frightened and thoroughly unsure of what to do, he resorted to nodding vigorously and agreeing with all that Chris has said, and clutched his precious tablecloth. Though, after hearing the disdain in the vampire's voice, and seeing their lack of options, he decided it would be in his interests to share his treasure instead of guard it.

"I have the plans for the likeness machine right here, if you could take a look... It makes instant drawings, you see? Only they're much faster... you can get a lot of detail, too, if you play with the curvy glass bits enough. It's all I've ever wanted, really, out of all my ideas..." He trailed off. In the back of his head, their was a buzz of discontent; a vampire And an engineer, two blasphemies in one... though being so close, so close to seeing that special little box he'd dwelt on and fussed over and rescued from the elements time and again, he could barely hear anything besides his nervous breathing and the calculating silence of the vampire's den. He fidgeted, and faltered; his nerves, shot from anticipation, gathered instead to brace for whatever response would come his way. His face slowly melted from panicked to his usual doggedly hopeful, faintly curious, and distinctly pathetic silent stare; all that he was thinking could easily be read by the down-turned puppy eyes and slightly pouted though very grimy lower lip.

Emily turned around and motioned to the back, her hips swaying from side to side as she laughed internally. Men are so easy to control.

"So I can increase speed you shoot at, oooh, I could re-drill the barrel and increase the size of your payload, but we'll need to be careful, otherwise it won't be so [i]long and hard[i] anymore. After all, we wouldn't want it being all wobbly and useless, would we?. We'll need to change out the clip of course." Emily turned around and stared at him. "You coming or not" She grinned at him as she reached down and adjusted her belt, pulling her robe a bit more closely to her rump than normal even as she picked her words carefully.

After all, she'd yet to meet a man who could think with more than one head at a time.

“Well, my dear girl, I’m more than happy to have you at my side. Between you and me, I’ve invited the gypsies to dance and perform for us today and the circus tomorrow, so it should be full of excitement. The ringmaster assures me that we’ll not want for entertainment when he brings out his crew.”

“Gypsies?” A smile formed on her lips. Gypsies were wonderful people in her eyes for they had a love for dance, music, art and nature. Strange yet fascinating people who saw more things then she could ever dream of. When she looked at her father, she saw him beaming with pride at his achievements. He looked so much younger now then the last time she saw him or maybe... she had just forgotten?

The sound of footsteps drew their attention to her companion and friend, Ysabel, who seemed rather displeased. Oh no, she must have forgotten to do something but what? With a call, the young maid spoke, “Lovely girl, where have you been? I did not expect this rendezvous to take as long as it did. Come, you must...do something other than sit here, reflecting. It's so unladylike!”

“She’s right, you know, Estelle. It’s only a scant two hours until the festival starts and you should have time to rest, relax, and prepare for it. I myself am running a bit behind on schedule. I’ll never hear the end of it from Luxon.”

As she opened her mouth to speak as her father walked off, the fair girl closed it, unsure as to what to say.

“By the way, Estelle. Keep in mind that your Mother has been practicing magic for at least twice as long as you have. Naturally, hers would be stronger. It takes practice, experience, and time to perfect the art. I’m looking forward to escorting you to the festival.”

Her face beamed with reassurance as he waved off, “Thank you father.” she whispered as Ysabel took control of the situation. “I'm coming,” she stood up. “Back to our room we go?”

Astaron gave a long, cold stare to the two small creatures, before his gaze drifted up to the larger. Despite the hint from the younger sounding one, he does not invite them in. He is very tired. It's getting on well into the afternoon now. No respectable person should be up this late.

"I'm sorry, allow me to see if I understand correctly. You, ah.. Christopher, was it? You were an engineer of.. some repute. To someone. But you are... penniless. Hm. And your... associate. Mr. Nobbs. I have seen him near here before."

Well, I've smelled him near here before, but it's close enough.

Astaron cleared his breath, examining 'Mr. Nobbs' rather carefully.

"And the two of you wish to.... use my workshop, for a.... recording device, of sorts. St. Claire, you said? That is your family name?" Astaron asked, changing subjects suddenly.

"Far from penniless Master. Gethalan, what I do not have is the machines to fabricate the parts needed. Some of them will need to be made specially. and even then I'll need to go see a lensmaker to grind the lenses correctly. But besides that yes."

Chris smiled at him merrily while thinking to himself. He doesn't seem to be very pleased. Of course, vampire, this is really quite late for him.

"And yes, my family name is St. Claire. But I think we've taken up enough of your time for now, I've just realized with your aversion to light this must be quite late for you. I apologize Master Gethalan."

This is getting ridiculous. A common child off the street treats the fact that I'm a vampire as if it's common knowledge? As if it's nothing to be afraid of? As if I just.. have a condition? Courtesy is one thing, but this is pushing it.

"Yes. It is getting rather late. You may return if you wish to continue the discussion, on the condition that you bring your.... brother, and wash your friend first. Several times. Thank you, good day."

Ysabel frowned at the King's apparent words of encouragement. She knew that Estelle had been feeling self-conscious about her magic, but the young maid had seen much worse that the princess rise to join the ranks of the best magicians and healers in the country. All it took was practice and dedication. But the King...The King was a man of science, and though Ysabel had no doubt of Estelle's abilities, the fact the King seemed to be so unbiased ruffled Ysabel's petite wings. She fluttered the restlessly, then turned her attention back to Estelle. "Well, dear, you do need to get dressed."

Turning around on her heels and gesturing Estelle forward in an almost maternal way, Ysabel led the girl through the garden and into the labyrinth of the castle. After the escapade of her last trip through the halls, finding their room this time was a cinch--as it turns out, they weren't far from the garden at all. As they reached their ornate door bearing markings of blasphemous gears and wheels, Ysabel cleared her small throat and turned to look at the princess with warm eyes. "Estelle, you know how much you've progressed with your magic the past six months. You might not be able to tell, but you're skills are rapidly growing stronger. It just takes a while to reach the level of experts like your mother. Please know that no one is doubting your ability, love." Here she opened wide the door, blinking a little as her eyes got used to the brightness. The sun was now even with their window, bathing the room in rich, warm light that gave the entire area an unearthly glow. Really, the decorating was superb.

Ysabel quickly walked over to Estelle's trunk, opening it up with a creak. After rustling through some of her more homely dresses, the maid pulled out a startling green gown. It was Ysabel's favorite on the girl--it really made her seem queenly. She held up the shimmering fabric to Estelle, grinning as she asked, "I was thinking you could wear this, lady."

(Christopher St. Claire, Astaron's workshop, Anastor) (sorry for the wait, internet issues)

Chris quietly nodded as he gathered himself to leave. "Mr. Nobbs, I do believe our friend here would like to get some sleep today. We should go."

Holding out his hand to the man. "We will come later tonight, any preferences?"

Listening to the man he nodded.

"Very well. Also, I have things I wish to purchase from you later, but we can discuss that later."

Chris turned from the door and spoke to Nobbs. "Well, let's go my friend. Things to do, miles to walk and all that jazz."

It seemed that time had gotten away from him.

King Marcas had been so busy with his own little tasks that he hardly realized that it was time to attend the festival until his Butler had informed him in a displeased tone that he was going to be late.

He put the finishing touches on a painting he’d been painstakingly working on for the past week and set the brush down, checking his outfit for any stray splatters of paint.

“Your hair, sir,” Luxon deadpanned.

“What about it?”

“It has a bright red splotch of paint in it.”

“Ah, well, I’ve always thought my hair was a rather dull color anyway,” the King said dismissively, turning to stride out of the room.

“Please inform my Daughter that we’ll be taking the horses to the festival instead of an airship, and that I will be waiting out front for her in ten minutes.”

“Very well, sir,” Luxon said and swept regally from the room after the King.

The King stopped long enough to get the paint out of his hair –what would his Kingdom think if he actually attended the festival with paint in his hair?- and swept out the front doors of the palace, where his chestnut horse waited, along with his Daughter’s horse and six horses with armed guards already mounted and waiting.

Jarvest fidgeted in his seat and downed his whiskey in one quick gulp, trying to blend in better. He’d never tell his noble acquaintances, but he was rather fond of whiskey. He glanced up, being sure to wipe his mouth on his sleeve, as two people approached his table.

“That would be me,” He stated carelessly in response to the woman’s inquiry, scrutinizing both of them. His gaze rested on the woman for more than the hooded man, however; for an assassin, she wasn’t bad looking at all.

Apparently satisfied with what he saw, the disguised nobleman reached into his pocket and produced a bag bulging with coins, with the vial of poison slipped in as well for the sake of subtlety.

“I think 10,000 gold coins will be a fair exchange. I will also be paying all your expenses, as you already know,” He said, sliding the bag across the counter. “The item you’ve been looking for is in there.”

He stared expectantly at the two, his gaze sliding between them.

(Estelle's room, Anastar)

"Well, dear, you do need to get dressed."

Estelle followed wordlessly as Ysabel guided her. It was always like this, her being more of a mother then a friend. How strange. As they walked, Estelle looked about and saw various paintings, mainly of animals and cities. She didn't realize they had reached their rooms until Ysabel cleared her throat and spoke, “Estelle, you know how much you've progressed with your magic the past six months. You might not be able to tell, but you're skills are rapidly growing stronger. It just takes a while to reach the level of experts like your mother. Please know that no one is doubting your ability, love."

A flush crossed the girl's face as she stammered a thank you. They both entered the room and watched the scene for a moment. Removing her cloak, Estelle placed it neatly across the bed and headed towards the bathroom to begin washing her face. From there she could hear Ysabel shuffling about, getting their things ready. Looking down at herself, Estelle realized she had to change clothes. Taking a small cloth towel, she dried her face off and returned to the main room.

"I was thinking you could wear this, lady."

Holding up the beautiful gown in her hands, Ysabel was waiting and Estelle couldn't help but smile. “This is perfect!” She said, and it was. The dress was a story of it's own value. Made to be a little garden of leaves growing from the helm of the dress and disappearing in the creases to reappear elsewhere. The top of her dress was not low enough to reveal anything unladylike, and the arms opened up to reveal her fair skin beneath. It was a favorite of hers.

“I'll change now.” She smiled. And she did, with the help of Ysabel as a knock came to the door. Upon opening the door, they saw Luxon, who bowed to the girl as she too returned his greeting. “I am to tell you, my lady, that your majesties is to take horses to the festivities instead of the usual airship. Your father has requested your presence out front within ten minutes.”

“Thank you, Luxon.” Estelle bowed graciously to him, he was always kind to her. “We shall be ready shortly.” When he left, Estelle put on a few simple pieces of jewelry and with Ysabel's help fixed her hair. Then they were ready to leave.

(Leila, Queen's quarters, Anastar)

Twisting a dark locke between her fingers, Leila stared at her reflection contently. Soon, there will be no one to challenge her power or her beauty. This thought seemed to calm her greatly as she smiled a bit deviously. She wasn't to go riding out with the King and his daughter, no, she had to go separately but in the end, it was all right. None of that would matter, once he was born.

(Nobbs, Streets, Anastor)

Nobbs blinked at the still bright sunlight after leaving the musty workshop. Reflecting on his day as he went, he was quite thrilled. The usually quite aimless man found a life of interest and worth all fall into his lap in a single afternoon, leaving him in quite a happy daze as he ambled down the pleasant streets of Anastor. The festival was about to begin, the people were all out and cheerful... Nobbs smiled, surveying the scene in blissful contemplation. There were two beggar children playing with a bright green ribbon and a small lively puppy by the side of the road, a vendor with brightly colored clockwork toys and ornaments giving out tiny mechanical butterflies for free, a young lass singing a popular verse to a small crowd that joined her happily each chorus, and- there down the road was a ragged man running with a group of burly men and shouting obscenities.

Nobbs blanched. The good feeling, needless to say, left him along with perhaps a few other things in his already disgusting trousers. Turning to Chris in a panic, Nobbs managed to blurt out "L-Lord Rasten fortune lost here to kill me down the road got to go!" before he dove into a vacant fruit stand and dashed into the alley just behind it. Lord Rasten and his goons were causing quite a fuss as they ran along; the lord wasn't too polite in his pursuit, leaving an angry trail of festival goers in his wake. Sod-off was very sorry, in retrospect, as he sped away... Not for what he did to Rasten, though. That fruit stand's owner had little hope in selling any of his wares with the smell of Nobbs still lingering in the air.

(Christopher St. Claire, Streets, Anastor)

Chris blinked as he listened to his friend's babbling talk as he ran for it. Chris looked horrified when he finally managed to decipher that the men were trying to kill him.

His mind immediately sparked into action. "Malcolm! Right through them, stay with Nobbs! Take him to the hotel!"

Malcolm didn't even acknowledge his master as he bolted through the men knocking them over. (He's with you for now, you have control of Malcolm)

Chris strode over quickly to the still recovering men and put his walking stick to the throat of the best dressed man.

Chris spoke in his most menacing voice, it usually didn't work, but when two prongs are digging into your throat with even a child towering above you, it became quite effective. "Speak now, speak quick, and pray I like what I hear. Nobbs said you were trying to kill him. Explain!" he barked out.

The finely dressed lord explained of the contraption while his men slowly circled around them. "Stay your hand or your master dies."

He turned back to the lord.

"Idiot! You should have tested his skills with machines or hired a partner for him. Your loss is the result of your own brazen incompetence." He stepped away from the man and the others circled in. With a flash of his stick he touched the end to a metal pole next to him leaving scorch marks on it's surface.

"You can try me if you want, but I guarantee, you won't walk away from it."

He watched them silently.

(Lord Rasten, Streets, Anastor)

Lord Rasten had turned a sickly sort of purple; the color of a face attempting paleness and a deep blush at the same time, torn between extreme fear and extreme embarrassment. As the street crowd shuffled in it settled into a light pink of indignation, and he pulled himself up while dusting off his ragged finery. Looking around, he curtly, though shakily, responded, "Y-You should know better, than t-to speak that way to your elders and b-betters; I shall let it slide today, given the, erm... circumstances." With that, he gestured to his men; though over the scene that had taken place here in the street, a realization had dawned among the thugs. While working for the miserable little lord was often quite draining, fairly generous wages had long made up for the chore; but just now, Lord Rasten had explained quite clearly that the collective damage Nobbs had caused had wiped away his funds in entirety. Gesturing again, then a third time, growing all the more panicked, their realization began to dawn on Lord Rasten and the rest of the crowd. In a variety of smirks, solemn nods and rude gestures, the men began to announce their resignations and go their separate ways, and Rasten, thoroughly humiliated and hot red in anger, turned sharply on his heel and marched off into the crowd, walking swiftly away from Chris and the audience that had grown from a mob of interested festival attendees.

(Nobbs, Streets, Anastor)

Now much further away, the clanking and small splashes of metal boots on wet cobblestone framed the void between two figures moving through the dank alley. A slightly stunned though grateful Nobbs hung over Malcolm's shoulder as he trudged though the silence. Moments before, a quiet, one sided conversation had tentatively entered in to fill the divide; but comments like "Where are we going?", "Where is your brother?", "Do you speak, do you feel?", all rose up and fell back, unanswered, and the conversation fell away with a final whispered "Thank you...." The gaping silence had now enveloped the two again, but Nobbs was content; this realm, though barren and bottomless, remained a safe haven. He trusted Malcolm to lead him and defend him in this darkness, even despite the still and lifeless barrier underlying, that he in his humanity could never bridge.

Re: [OOC] Retha: Machines and Magic

I've been absent for a while but now I'm back... hopefully the RP isn't dead. xD Ummm, let's see. We lost Kama, so I need someone to fill in for the healer that will eventually cure the King of the poison... whenever he is poisoned. I'll be making my post soon of the king joining the festival.

If anyone wants to fill in as a healer, basically a group of however many people is supposed to search the lands near the kingdom for a healer who can cure the king. It was planned that the healer would be found in a dangerous cave... you know, adventure and all that, but Its not set in stone. If you have any ideas, feel free to announce them.

Re: [OOC] Retha: Machines and Magic

I'll help out, but you're gonna have to help me out, I just exhausted my entire combat capability in one post.

Too bad I don't keep a squirrel on me.

Re: [OOC] Retha: Machines and Magic

I can't say that'd be enough of a commotion... But it's a start, yeah? Help me out, let's start a fray worth getting other characters involved :D

Re: [OOC] Retha: Machines and Magic

Considering I've been sitting here waiting on you, I'd say liven it up.

Re: [OOC] Retha: Machines and Magic

Is this RP dead? Or do we just need to liven it up?

Yeah... I'm stumped. I don't know where to go from there. Maybe after events start up with the festival we'll have more direction, but I just can't think of anything to do.
