Return to Darkness

Return to Darkness

0 INK

Something was unleashed upon the Realm after those two months of darkness. Will you band together with a group of strangers and seek out the source?

713 readers have visited Return to Darkness since Celaradith created it.

Introduction

“The darkness has lasted for almost two weeks now. Two weeks! Our candle supply is all but starved, we’re down to relying on what wood we can salvage from the town. Everyone is scared, scared because the sun and the moon have abandoned us. There’s no stars in the skies to guide us.

The ground keeps shuddering, at first it was faint... but now. Now it’s getting stronger. The wind rarely blows in this darkness, it always seems to happen around the time of the tremors, which is when it rains and our flames go out. Even the ones indoors.

What’s going on?

When will this darkness end?”

~

“One month has passed and people are falling ill, at least we think it’s been a month. Everyone is exhausted all the time and fights keep breaking out over light sources. We spend our waking hours huddled around the small fires we have lit. Are we going to die like this? They’re all miserable and a few just seem to cry all the time. We’ve had to resort to burning spare furniture to keep the lights burning.

A few of the braver folks have taken some supplies and gone in search of some more wood from the forest, no one knows if they’ll ever return.

It’s hard to write in this light, but it’s the only thing that’s keeping my sanity somewhat intact.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Return to Darkness!

I’m a big fantasy fan, and I love creating a world to write in - which sometimes can take months. This time around, the ideas flowed like water and bam. Here we are! Sure, there’s probably countless fantasy rp’s around; but this one is my own. It’s my squishy.

*Ehem*

But yes, I’ve been interested in doing some sort of adventure story and lo and behold, an idea popped into my head. Although the original idea has evolved into what we have now from my first idea.

I’m going to welcome all characters from all walks of life in this grand adventure! Sure, we can all play the mage who can kill a cow and cook it perfectly for dinner with one spell, or the archer who can shoot a fly at 500 feet onto the head of a needle... But what about those wannabe adventurers? The alchemist whose best creation was a delightful cup of tea? Or the swordsman who can barely carry their weapon? I want these characters too! I want healers who will faint at the sight of blood! They’ll need a thirst for adventure, but we can’t all be seasoned heroes! Lose your sword? Panic and steal one from a fellow adventurer, or grab a stick and start swinging!

I’d like at least a paragraph per post, we don’t need to read how every blade of grass moves in each novella size post. Sure, they’ll probably happen from time to time - but quality over quantity here folks! If you can post every couple of days to keep things moving, that would be great; I know I get impatient once things start moving along.

I should probably introduce myself a little. I’m still sort of new to the site, but I always have ideas bouncing around in my head. Which is good, seeing as I’m a writing student! I’ve been roleplaying for around 15 years? (Yes, I’m old I know.) I live in Australia, so my posting times might be a little strange for you northern hemisphere dwellers. I also don’t bite, so if you have issues or questions: PM me or post on the OOC thread!

Races

Humans: Typically, humans are pretty numerous and are quite welcoming and hard working. They can do almost anything they put their minds to, and are employed in all manner of positions around the Realm. The bandits of Faarstrad tend to be made up of mostly humans. Their skin comes in many shades of pinks and browns, their hair can be any colour; as can their eyes. Humans can learn magic for a price, usually from a skilled Shi’lari Magus. Their penchant for greed can land them in hot water quite quickly.

Shi’lari: Long eared and fine-featured, the tall elven folk are adept at wielding magic. Most of it is glamour spells, and those with the skill for stronger magic; particularly healing magic, are trained intensively in temples. They prefer the company of their own Kin and live in large cities with delicate and intricate architectural designs in silver and golden accents. Their skin comes in any shade between black and white, and their eyes are golden. They do not tolerate weakness and are quite often haughty.

Kiireen: Diminutive and delicate, the feyfolk of the Realm flit through the skies on colourful butterfly-style wings. Long, wispy antenna protrude from their foreheads which are feathered at the tips. They are never over 3ft in height and are best known for their singing and alchemy. Their skin comes in pastel tones, and their eyes shimmer like crystals. Only a rare handful have an affinity for defensive magic. They will help anyone in need, especially if there’s a reward at the end.

Qu-ornn: At first glance, the tall, muscular Qu-ornn may seem somewhat terrifying; until you get to know one. The average giant stands around 9 feet and has dark, tanned skin and green eyes. They live in the mountains and are in fact, known for their connection with animals which gives them an advantage as farmers. They have no affinity for magic and are gentle, unless provoked. You don’t want to provoke something that can lift boulders now, do you?

Genn: The Genn are a race of nomads who only get together once a year, they spend the rest of the time alone - mostly in the wilds. They’re well-known as hunters and traders, and rumoured as thieves. Adapt at bows and daggers, the Genn shun any magic at all; but do embrace alchemy. If they are required to stay in a town or city, which is rare, they trade for their bed; having no real need for money. They excel at working with hides and living from the land. Genn are usually around 6 feet in height with green skin and brown hair in any shade. Their eyes are always a shade of red.

Toggle Rules

1: The most important rule? Have fun and don't be afraid to think outside of the 'perfect hero' box! We all have flaws, some are just bigger than others.

2: Please no godmodding. If you control/kill etc somoene elses character without their express permission - you may be asked to leave.

3: No Mary Sues/Gary Stus. What fun is there with the perfect noble who has the power of the cosmos in her pinky? None. So please don't do it. Sues will be declined.

4: Please try and post at least once every couple of days, and try for a paragraph at the least. Spelling and grammar is also important, it helps us understand what''s going on.

Jonathais watch as the group broke apart, before anyone could get to far he thought of his parents stall "I know where we can get some good food for the trip. If anyone wants to go." Jonathais said as he turned to head towards the market. He knew one hundred gold would do his family great good. The young halfing put his hood back on and walked in silence before reaching the stall.

It was covered with all kinds of food. He hugged both of his parents and handed them the bag of gold. "You'll need this more then me." He said, his parents looked inside and his mother broke into tears. I'll be alright, where we'll be going, goes right by the Shi'larian village. I'll just drop by there and get some food. It will also let me tell my grandfather of our trip. I still have enough food to last me until there." Jonathais said and kissed his mothers cheek and hugged both his parents before walking off with his horse.

Once he had room, he threw his bag on the back of the horse. He looked at the horse as she nudged him. "We'll be taking a trip. You keep me safe and I'll keep you safe. Plus some carrots. I know you like carrots." Jonathias said, then sat down in the courtyard, waiting for everyone to meet back up.

Gonlur extended his hand as the jingle of coins alerted him to the fact that someone was offering him gold coins. He took the bag, and offered the man a smile, hoping that he wasn't facing away from him. Slowly, he turned around, and tapped his finger against the bag of coins as he thought. With each gentle tap, the coins clinked once.

He had brought all he needed. Mostly, he didn't eat much, and didn't wear much. Perhaps it was because he was blind and clothes of different colors made no difference to him. Perhaps it was that he was happy with just his simple attire. Whatever it was, he pocketed the bag of coins and made his way out back into the courtyard.

The different sounds assaulted him as he stepped out; the whinny of a horse, and the sound of something that sounded like a reptile, or a bird with a long neck. The sound was thin, as if the creature which had emitted it didn't have a big chest, but a long neck. He was trying to identify this strange creature when the sudden, high-pitched sound of someone made him jump.

A fey. Definitely.

"Hi," he said, offering a smile back at her, revealing the tips of white, perfect teeth. He chuckled at the question—such a nice imitation of his own words—and said, "intense training, mostly, and hatred. Hatred helped me focus my energy on something. I wanted to hurt someone, and I was a child. Worse, I couldn't see. So, I started being miserable all the time!"

His retelling was cheerful, detached, as if the events were long dealt with and brought into the open. He was also feeling the fey's infectious mood. "So, this man came to me and practically made me stop sitting around and told me that I could use my body, my fists and feet, and that he could teach me how. Afterwards, it was just repetition: practice, learn, practice, learn, practice, learn." He laughed softly and said, "The same thing over and over for nine years!"

He stepped back to allow someone to pass between him and the fey, then stepped forward again. "What about you? You should pardon me; I don't know your name or where you come from. I was late to the... introductions."

There was a big smile on the blind man's face, and even his eyes seemed cheerful and happy. For him, this was not the calm before the storm; it was more likely to be the surge of adrenaline in running, before your feet get tangled and you go down.

Reevis's eyes widened slightly as he felt the weight of the coins when he received his bag. When he had become a paladin, he had quickly learned that the moniker of his order as poor knights of Kha'nashi was not an exaggeration. He followed the others out of the keep and to the marketplace, pausing at a few stalls to purchase food and waterskins for the road. After that, Reevis broke off from the group and made his way towards the local temple to Kha'nashi. He took a handful of coins from the bag, dropping them in a donation box as he approached the altar. The now much lighter bag of coins was stuffed back into his pack.

Removing his helmet and cradling it under his arm, Reevis muttered a quick prayer. "Lord of the Sun, grant us strength and determination in this endeavor, that we may strive to do your work and spread your light." The warm, confident feeling Reevis felt in his heart was all the reassurance he needed. He pulled his helmet back on and went to the courtyard to wait for the rest of the group to assemble.

Jonathais watched as the paladin walked up. He nodded some. "So what do I call you, Sir Paladin? I'm Jonathais by the way. I hope that we can be friends and work well together." He said, trying to be friendly with the Paladin, hoping that he wouldn't be mean or rude. Jonathias understood that most people looked down on halfing, but for some odd reason, his families got along. He then though for a moment. "You know the Shi'larin city is on the way, we can stop there and get some more supplies. Plus I would like the blessings from the Shi'larin elders. Would you mind if we stopped there for a day or two?" He asked, thinking that the Paladin would probly be the one to take charge.

Caliond took the heavy coinpurse from the armoured man with a small smile and a bow, following the others out of the castle into the marketplace. They broke apart and headed off on their own directions, he headed to find some food for the journey as he'd eaten the stuff he'd bought with him on his travels here. He followed his nose and bought some fresh baked bread, oh how good it smelled!

As he turned, he bumped into a small child who was dirty. Her clothes were ragged and she peered up at him mournfully, her eyes locking onto the food in his hands.

Guilt washed over the Shi'Lari and he looked from his food, to the child. He remembered the time when he was in need and those fae had helped him, it had saved his life.

"Here." He crouched down in front of the girl and gave her the bread, and a handful of coins. He instantly regretted his action, but no. This was the right thing to do, right?

The girl stared at the elf for a long time, before smiling and attacking him in the biggest hug she could manage before turning and racing off through the market. Caliond stood slowly and watched her as she left. Yes, that was the right thing to do. He counted his remaning money and set about buying some more food to bring along before he headed back to the courtyard to await the others' arrival.

Aanri went through a mix of expressions while Gonlur answered her question. She felt somewhat sad as he told his story, but his cheery tone kept her from showing that.

She nodded with a loud 'Mhmm!' as he asked for her name, "I'm Aanri! No last name yet. I'm a fey." She held her wide smile and fluttered her wings as she stood there; mostly for herself and not the blind man she was speaking to.(Fey pride!)

"I can brew you up some uhm... stamina or energy potions if you want! For training or when we start... Fighting things." She was physically irked at the idea of fighting a giant monster in a forest still shrouded in the darkness. The little ones, however, she was fine with bopping with her staff until they flopped over. "It might take me a little while though because most of my potions tend to... Well, explode." Aanri quietly laughed,

"Oh, right! We have to buy things!" She reached back to find the weighted bag of gold she tied to her belt. "Right so, I'll be back in a bit!" She giggled again, taking a few steps back before spinning around to find a suitable shop.

Maybe I should find a gem for my staff. I lost the last one aaaages ago and never replaced it. She thought, trotting around from shop to shop until she finally found a small stall selling magical odds & ends. She quickly chatted with the owner before he pulled out a palm sized magenta coloured gem. Aanri nodded happily and fetched her small sum of money. Handing over the sack of gold she quickly took the gem, as well as several herbs the shop keep decided to throw in, and placed them into one of her pouches. She thanked the man, offering a shallow bow as she roamed the market some more in search of gossip. She eventually found her way back to the group and wandered back to Gonlur with a smile.

Reevis looked to Jonathais, nodding politely as he was greeted. He didn't bat an eye at the man's halfling nature, if he even noticed at all. "I would prefer we take the most direct route to our destination, and if your city is on that route, I see no reason not to stop there for supplies. But we should not tarry there longer then the night. We have a sacred duty to perform and the king has entrusted us to see to it swiftly and thoroughly."

Allenora glanced at the man - more specifically, human - walk in the room, holding numerous large bags. She rose and eyebrow, walking swiftly behind the group and collected her rather weighty bag of gold. Usually she would be excited to accept such a large amount of gold, but she knew it should be well spent. She followed the group of people out to the now empty courtyard. She was surprised at how large it seemed now with all the people gone. They walked further onwards down into a street lined by many stores, selling a variety of items. What Allenora was craving the most for this trip was food and matches - lots of matches. It's not that she's afraid of the dark, but she feels a lot safer with a warm light near her eye.

Allenora smiled at the people who looked her way, asking if she'd want to buy anything, and a lot of the time she politely shook her head. I should probably pile up on bandages too, she thought to herself. She kept her eyes closely to the ground, making sure her hair covered her rather embarrassing sized antenna's before coming across a stall that seemed to sell packet ready-to-go meals. She smiled as she was greeted by the marketers, asking what she was after. She glanced briefly over the ready-to-go packets before asking for whatever 50 gold pieces will buy. The shop keeper beamed, pleased by the sale he was making. Allenora almost blushed, feeling flattered for helping someone, in a sense anyway. The shop keeper got busy, choosing a variety of meals, and soon Allenora was handed 20 ready-to-go packet foods. She grinned at the shop keeper and opened her own sack of goods before placing the packet meals in her bag. It was starting to feel rather heavy, but she knew soon she would be on the road and it would be the last of her thoughts.

Allenora walked a little further down the road, stopping every so often to look at the stalls, looking at the interesting products on offer, until she came across a little "Health" tent. Biting her bottom lip, she walked into the tent, and standing there was an elderly woman sitting in an old wooden rocking chair in the corner of the green tent. Allenora bobbed her head, smiling. The lady wobbled to a stand and smiled, "Hello deary, what can I get you?" She asked, the corners of her mouth turning upwards. Numerous lines cornered her eyes, giving the old lady no justice of age.

"I'm looking for bandages?" Nora replied quietly. She put her hands behind her back, biting her lip again. The old lady was nodding and waved a hand to the further side of the tent.

"Over there are lots of bandages, different sizes..." The lady rambled on the good uses for the sizes. Allenora nodded politely, not really caring about what the lady had to say.

"I'll get as much as I can with 30 gold coins," Nora handed the lady the 30 gold coins and in return got three large rolls of bandages. She smiled at the lady before she left the tent, putting the goods in her bag. She had 20 coins left, but she figured she might need more again on her trip later, and it was best to save them.

Allenora was outside of the green tent, and noticed a few people gathering together and speaking. She dipped her head low again, and starting walking towards the group. She came upon a decision that she shouldn't make things hard for herself, and should rather get to know the people that she would be working closely with.

Jonathias listened to Reevis carefully. "I do believe that the city is along the route. And i understand about not staying for more then the night. They will welcome us with open arms. I know they will." Jonathias replied. His thoughts went back to the city that his grandfather was the elder to, and how they were fairing. A little worry grew in the young halfing's eyes, but quickly disappeared. Jonathias wasn't they time to let people see I'm in a state of worry.

While the fey stepped away from him and he nodded farewell to her, Gonlur began thinking. He was not sure how he would do in a group, and how the group would take to his presence. In the darkness, he wasn't really sure how much people could see and how fast they will be. Yes, they might be able to see vague shapes, but would they be able to stick a sword in that shape? And, how would they know it's not one of the group?

He sighed thoughtfully, and stepped back, pressing his back against a wall. All right. So there was a fey in this group. Energetic, probably good with herbs too, if he was guessing right. There was also a paladin. Not much help. For some reason, he had the feeling that the paladin would stand beside him only as long as what he did was aligned with the paladin's God.

He tilted his head, pursing his lower lip, drawing more into himself. What else was there that he could use to keep himself alive? He didn't know much about any of these people, and that needed to change. But he wasn't good with people. Shit, shit.

Might as well try, he thought and stepped forward -- only to have the fey materialize in front of him.

He jumped.

"Found what you were looking for?" He asked, taking note of her quickened breathing. He wondered how she breathed if she moved so fast all the time. Would her heart ever slow down? Would she ever relax into sleep? Would she pant in-

No, not there. Don't go there.

In an effort to pull his thoughts into line, he let his ears pick up bits and pieces of conversation going on in the courtyard, while waiting for the fey to respond.
