___Biography

Nikolina was born to her mother Maria Parto and her father Andrew Barfield. Her father worked in a winery in Italy and was very famous in Italy while her mother was an Australian local. He was visiting on business and met her mother. There she and him made love and conceived Nikolina. Her father ended up moving down to Australia and was working through his brother as manager. She was never really much with her father as he was always working while her mother was always busy taking art classes and different stuff in town. Her mother had no job but enjoyed to be doing stuff.

By the time Nikolina was of five years old her parents decided that they should get married. She was a flower girl at the time and remembers the event very well. And that was when her power begun. Her mother was always teaching her new things and by the second time around she was already really good. Her mother thought that she just had a natural journey for it all. While her father thought it was weird and didn’t like her doing that.

She continued to read and learn and when she began to go to school she got worried that she was losing herself in it all. She was losing herself in the facts. That all that information was drowning her and she wasn’t being free. Around the time she turned six or seven her parents really began to not care anymore or pay lots of attention to her. They really became careless. He was always working and she was always busy leaving her alone to spend time for herself.

She tried to stop herself from remembering so good. But it just didn’t happen. She stopped going to school and that made her father pay attention. By the time she was ten and her father realized it wasn’t going away he took her around the country going to top neurologists. Doctors who deal with the brain. When they went to every meeting and every appointment and every test the doctors all said the same thing. “Your daughter is perfectly fine.” That’s when her mother suggested an idea that would hurt her forever.

Her mother always believed in the paranormal activities and that stuff and since they did have a religion of the Christian faith she wondered if maybe she was the devil or an alien trying to learn about human stuff. Her father began to believe her mother as time went on. Doing research when she came to the age of 14 she then had a life changing event. Her father sat down with her in his office. And her mother was standing in the corner crying. Her father sat there folding his hands and looked at Nikolina. He told her she would be moving to an academy for people with different abilities and he came upon it during his research.

She didn’t want to go but he said they would go. She knew from then on that this was just something of hers but he just wanted to send her to a school of people who thought they were “special” have her locked up and not deal with her anymore. She didn’t care being a bit crazy in it all she went and thought it was terrible she hated it but slowly as time went on she was getting better at it all. And she couldn’t wait till she left and she would make sure to visit her parents first.

ImageImageThe silence in the room spoke volumes. The five of them sat around the wooden table made of harsh grain, like scars carved into a wizened face. The table itself was indeed old; so old none of the people currently sitting around it could remember a time the table had not been the centerpiece of the room. It had been at the academy since the building had been erected, through every renovation and update, and its weathered surface almost out of place among the slate gray concrete of the new walls. And yet, throughout every modernization, the table had remained. No one even questioned it anymore. No matter what happened, the table would always stay. It was a little island of comfort, provided some sense of ease to the people seated at its rickety chairs. Whatever bleak situation was approaching, at least the table would always stand.

This time, however, they weren't so certain. What they were about to be confronted with could topple everything the board had been working towards for centuries-- including the table. All the members sat in pure silence, not a sound uttered. The thick air of unease was palpable.

"We have to fight," the board director finally said, shattering the fragile web of quiet that had laced the room.

"With what army?" came the quick retort from a wiry female with silvery hair.

A new voice chimed in. "You act like we don't have very capable fighters on our side, Patricia."

"Not nearly as many as they have," Patricia responded immediately.

The bulky male opened his mouth to speak, but was quickly cut off by the director.

"George, Trisha, that's enough from the two of you. If we don't have sufficient numbers, we'll create them. We have a school full of talented young souls just waiting for a purpose."

George and Trisha glanced in each other's direction, the same look in both their eyes: uncertainty. The two were used to bickering-- they did so frequently-- but theirs was a friendship that could last through the ages. The many years spent working together had solidified their relationship long ago, and while their friendly rivalry never faded, their connection bordered on telepathic.

They directed their skeptical gazes to the director, who responded with a cool stare. There were several moments of uninterrupted silence before any more was spoken.

"That's ridiculous."

The director focused his gaze on Patricia. "How so?"

There was an edge to his voice like she had never heard before, something akin to serrated glass. So this was the voice of desperation.

"These children are terrified. Shaping them into capable soldiers in under a year? It's, well, frankly, it's impossible," George chipped in while Trisha was busy examining the harsh lines of the director's aging face.

Again, a tense silence permeated the air. Then, a sudden scraping noise as the director pushed back his chair and stood. "Figure it out," were the last words he spoke before stalking out of the room. The two members that had been silent the entire exchange followed his suit, leaving George and Patricia in the suddenly much colder room. A shiver ran through Trisha, and she rubbed her arms to ease the goosebumps.

This time, the silence was blissful as the two stewed in their own thoughts and worries. It was George that eventually broke it.

"Our job starts tomorrow then."

"You know we can't let them know what's happening."

"You're not suggesting we just go on pretending everything's the same as it always was, are you?"

"That's exactly what I'm suggesting. We should delay the pandemonium for as long as possible."

"I agree, but... should we really be keeping them all in the dark about this?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Alright. Fair enough. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Tomorrow," she agreed.

A moment of mutual sympathy and self-pity passed between them. Then, they went their separate ways, dreading the very next day where they'd tackle a task that was sure to fall harder and faster than Goliath himself. They could only hope their students would find a way to overcome their worst fears.

She hated her gift sometimes. It was a pain. Who ever wants to be really smart? She wanted to not get caught up in the small things. And knowing a lot. Was getting caught up in the small things. Making her hate to use her power.

She awoke with a major headache. It most likely was her book she read last night. Sometimes I don't understand why I read.

She loved this school. She really did. Even though she hated that her parents wanted her to go here. It was an okay place. They had really nice teachers and some of the students were really cool.

She got out of bed and looked through her closet. Her dorm was with three other girls. She hadn't really talked much to them. But she planned on making it her duty to get to know them better.

She grabbed out a dress and a jean jacket with a belt and some boots. She changed into her outfit. She went to the table and sat down. With her laptop she began zooming through her facebook account.

Reese reached out a pale hand to brush her fingertips along the silky texture of a grayish-white down feather, hanging lightly from a dark leather cord that was tied to a handmade dream catcher. The net was made of a brown hemp string, a complex spiderweb design tied into it, two red glass beads and a single yellow bead were spread randomly throughout the net. Of course she hadn't made something so beautiful, it was a gift from her grandmother several years before. The old woman thought they would disperse Reese's nightmares, or at the very least, lessen them. Every year since she was seven until she was thirteen, her grandmother sent her a new dream catcher in the mail on her birthday. Reese displayed them proudly on her side of the dorm room. They varied in color and size and material and each one was special.

And none of them worked.

Reese had never expected them to work from the start, but the thought they could was... reassuring in a way.
"Another morning," she murmured under her breath, her voice rough from disuse. The morning sunlight was streaming in through the thin curtains and landing on Reese's sketchbook that was propped up on her knees that were drawn to her chest. In her right hand, she twirled a graphite art pencil lazily before setting it down on the desk in front of her. The past night had not sparked any creativity in her being so she eyed the blank page in front of her, frustrated. A small sigh and she flipped the cover closed and set that down on the desk too. For some, it might seem that sitting in silence and darkness for hours doing nothing is rather difficult and maybe even pathetic to an extent, but this routine has become all too easy for Reese's brain. Staying awake was much better than the alternative.

The girl swiveled around in her chair to face the opposite side of the room where her roommate, Joseph, slept (or more often than not, didn't sleep). However, not wanting to disturb him in any way, Reese did her best to be silent as she crept to the bathroom door and slipped inside with her arms full of clothes. As soon as she flipped the light switch on, her heart jumped in her chest and a tiny gasp escaped between her lips. Reese leaned forward to stare at herself in the mirror. She ran her fingers over the prominent purple circles under her eyes. Even the sight of them reminded her of her lack of sleep and exhaustion crept into her body. Reese's reflection was beginning to scare her, probably not a good thing. The girl hunched her shoulder over and she let out a huge yawn, setting her clothes down on the counter and shoving a toothbrush in her mouth as she began her morning routine.

"Well," Reese thought to herself, "I've been feeling half-dead all summer, at least now I look it." Even the thought made the girl smile at herself. After she had brushed her teeth and ran her fingers through her wild hair, Reese tugged on a huge black sweater since she had already taken a shower at three in the morning. The sweater itself could've easily been used as a dress on Reese's petite frame, but the girl pulled on some capri jeans underneath them and slipped on a pair of black Nike sneakers. Reese opened the bathroom door and left the room as quietly as she could, escaping into the rest of the dorm room. To her surprise, Nikolina was already awake, browsing on her laptop.

'Oh! Good morning!" Reese declared pleasantly, brushing her wild hair over her shoulder to keep it out of her face. She looked over at the small little kitchenette in the corner, her heart sinking slightly as she remembered one of the Academy's rules.

"Sure would be nice to have a coffee maker in here, huh? God knows I need it, right?" she joked happily before drifting over to the couch and plopping down on it, drawing her knees up to her chest. It was a habit of Reese's to try to take up as little space as possible, it was like she was just trying to shrink into nothingness, drown in the fabric of her baggy clothes. She was quiet for a few moments, her chin resting on her knees. Finally, her bright green eyes slid over to Nikolina, staring slightly at the girl's beauty before she broke out of it and finally asked about the final roommate.

"Is Gwen up yet?" Reese inquired hopefully, turning her torso to look over at the door of Nikki and Gwen's room.

──────────────────────────
Light filtered into the room in thin, vertical lines from the slits in the window's curtain. Originally he'd wanted blinds but his parents insisted that he not have too much liberty in decorating the room. Then again, if it had been up to Joseph's discretion he'd have left the dorm a mess. He rolled over at a vague murmuring which must have come from his roommate, if not a ghost. He wasn't entirely sure when he'd slept the night before, likely around two or three ante meridian (read: A.M.) which meant he'd gotten less than his recommended (but rarely followed) eight hours of sleep. Often times his issue was not getting to sleep but staying that way.

He knew that Reese was doing her best to let him rest but it wasn't always so easy. Now that he was awake his body wouldn't allow him the privilege of falling back asleep. Instead, the back of his mind called for his cellphone and whatever news there might have been about his incoming package.

Your AmazonSmile order of "Innovation First Hexbug..." has shipped!

Hm, he was hoping that it'd be at his door by now. He was even using his brother's Amazon Prime trial! Well, beggars couldn't be choosers. Joseph propped himself against the wall as he slowly sat up and exited the warm covers of his bed. Reese already left for breakfast which meant that he had the room to himself, a feeling that he relished. It wasn't to say that he disliked Reese (quite the opposite honestly) but being alone in the mornings felt great compared to the hustle and bustle of the mental power department and even the suite's common room. They all seemed much more social compared to him and he barely knew anyone.

He lumbered over to his desk, opening the drawer and frowning when he only found empty chip bags. No more food in the not-so-secret stash? This day was bad already. He closed the drawer and walked over to his closet where he fished for a gray t-shirt and some jeans (he wasn't one for fashion) before heading to the bathroom. Some face washing to wake him up, teeth-brushing to prevent cavities, and some Egg Machine rolls to disappoint himself. It was all routine during the day but moreso now that it was Player's Choice God Fest.

Figures I'd get another Ronia, Joseph thought as he wiped his mouth with a wash cloth.

He left for the common room with a bowl of instant noodles, making a beeline for the sink before sticking his breakfast in the microwave. It seemed that both Nikolina and Reese were there, his roommate on the couch and the other woman browsing the computer. He decided on a seat one space away from Reese, silent for a few (awkward) moments before speaking.

"Uh morning."

Nikolina, was such a difficult name for some. She didn’t mind it, she went by Nina, and many other abbreviations but she wondered if half her Facebook friends, people she had met on the internet or befriended her of her blog. She wondered if they knew how to pronounce her name. She liked blogging in her spare time. It was a made up blog about what her life would be like if this happened or that. It was more like a dreaming blog.

She had noticed one of her roommates spoke to her and she looked up from her computer and smiled at Reese. “Morning Reese, no I haven’t seen her yet, sorry.” She said with a small smile before looking at her computer when she heard her male roommate that she thought was always very good looking she looked up at him and smiled. “Good morning Joseph.” She said with a smile before looking back at her computer.

She looked at her news feed from the different posts. “Does anyone know what they had planned this morning?” She asked before typing blogger.com into the url. Her computer was a sanity mechnisom she hated learning because she didn’t want to get lost in the little things. But here she didn’t need to be smart. Or try to say hey I remember every single thing. God forbid if I did end up acting like that they would sent me to the mental home. She smiled at her thoughts.

Oh…Wait I already am.” She said then typing the beginning of her post.
