Alex Garcia

Under normal circumstances, this would have been Alex's favorite night of the year. He'd spent months working on his costume, sewing and re-sewing pieces, hand stitching details, giving up on the mask and buying it online; all while trying to maintain some sort of historical accuracy, even with his Abuela's constant "Alex, who cares how historically accurate it is? It's creepy. That's all anyone's going to notice." He cared if it was accurate! So, normally, he would be absolutely thrilled, but tonight he was more worried than anything. "You just gotta get the dreams out of your mind, Alex." He mumbled to himself, "I know that hunters are almost certainly getting too close for comfort, but nothing bad ever really comes of it. It'll be fine." Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that he should just climb into bed and skip the festival entirely.

Instead, he got ready; layer by layer, piece by piece. At least I'll stay warm. He thought to himself, trying to put thoughts of fire, death, destruction, and hunters out of his mind. "Alex," he turned when he heard his name. This was the first time his Abuela had seen all the pieces of his costume put together, "my god. Don't you think you've taken the 'melancholic ghost boy' thing a little too far?"

He looked down at himself, "No that's not- it's not... It's a plague...." He sighed, "I am not working out my reasoning with you." She rolled her eyes, mumbled something about scaring children, and the two of them set out for the festival, originally together, but they split up pretty quickly once they hit the crowd. A short wave of panic hit Alex, but he swallowed it down, adjusted his hat, and kept an eye out for friendly faces. He would certainly feel better around friends; instead, he felt swallowed by a mob of vaguely familiar faces, and some he couldn't place at all. The mask didn't help, and he was already considering ditching it for some piece of mind, but he decided to take it a step at a time, everything was going to be just fine.

ImageThe fall festival was perhaps one of Aurora's favorite times of the year. The treats, the decorations, the costumes. It was an absolute delight to the fae. She had a small both set up with an array of fall flowers, from colorful mums to big sunflowers. Aurora had enlisted the help of her brother Lynn to help her run the cart for the night (also allowing her to leave and find her friends) granted she was paying him good money. While the idea of family had always been a touchy subject for Aurora, the Carsons took her in with opens arms five years ago and treated her like she was their own. The older kids in the family, Megan and Peter had since left Greythorne both seeking a normal life outside the town's magical walls. Lynn, however, was the youngest and only a sophomore at the local high school where her adoptive mother taught. It took Aurora a little convincing to get him to help her considering he was still just a teenage boy, but after the promise of money and the idea that flowers most definitely attracted the girls he agreed. "Alright, just text me if you need me or anything goes wrong okay?" "Aurora - I'll be fine" "Okay, but seriously just" "Aurora" "Fine, fine, I'll leave you be. I'm going to go get some apple cider and try to find some of my friends" Lynn nodded at her comment and she took one more glance at her flowers to make sure none of them were wilting before disappearing into the crowd.

She quite obviously stood out amongst the others in the crowd with her costume. She had spent a week putting together the pastel witch ensemble and managed to find the perfect mask at the local costume shop. Aurora was pretty proud of it, and had been holding in her excitement all week. She couldn't wait to show Phoenix, Jaiden, and Alex. After she ordered a warm cup of cider she weaved through the crowd, trying her best to see through the costumed people around her despite her small stature. She grinned after she noticed the familiar form of Jaiden making her way over to the witch. "You look, amazing!" Aurora spoke from behind her, "You pull off steampunk perfectly".

Cassiel couldn't believe he was still here. He had stayed in Greythorne longer than any other town in the past 50yrs. Every night, he told himself he was going to leave and every morning he got up and walked to Phoenix's cafe for a blackberry scone and coffee. At this point his order was already ready for him before he had even got there. And the even bigger problem - Phoenix. After some digging Cas concluded the man was a witch, he hadn't encountered many in his life time. Most angels were taught that witches were in cahoots with the devil but Cas didn't really get the 'satan-worshipper' vibe from him. Cas would know, he had actually met quite a few of those during his time on Earth. Regardless, Cas had begun to explore the rest of the town during his extended stay, finding it quite charming. Maybe he could stay for just a bit longer, it couldn't hurt too much.

He wouldn't have even known about the festival if it hadn't been for Phoenix himself, inviting him to experience a little bit of what made Greythorne, Greythorne. Cas had politely declined, dressing up for fun wasn’t really his thing and he was rather afraid of getting too involved in the lives of those in the town. If he hadn’t already. But, as he sat in the small bed in the room of the Mom and Pop bed-in-breakfast staring at the white ceiling Cas began to wonder what would be the worst that could happen if he went. He didn’t actually have to talk to anyone, and in costume, it would be harder to recognize him. Even though he stood out quite distinctly from the natives of Greythorne. So he mulled on it for half an hour and then finally decided to at least check it out. Cas promised himself he would just walk around, maybe get some treats and then hurry back to his room, pack his things, and leave.

Cassiel didn’t have much of a costume so he sifted through his things before settling on a dressed up version of himself, putting on his silver cross necklace. The second he stepped out into the street he was overwhelmed with the sheer amount of people all dressed up, and the decorations the town had put together. There was live music, lights, booths with any kind of snack you could think of, carnival games, and even a small ferris wheel. A small smile appeared on his face just at the sheer sight of it all. For some reason everything made him just a little sad.

As he made his way into the outskirts of the festival he realized that he was missing a key part of his look - a mask. After scouring around he finally found a small vendor selling all types of masks and picked up a rather ominous skeleton one, shoving a few fives into the man’s hand. Now feeling a little more concealed he moved into the thick of the crowd, not entirely sure as to what he was looking for.

One of Phoenix's favourite things about this was the sheer variety of costumes. There was some who were wearing their own clothes and a mask, some who had clearly put most of their effort into one bold, aspect, and others who had gone entirely overboard. And none of them were out of place. Some kids ran over and touched his wings, and Phoenix bent down and bent them towards them so they could feel them properly. They giggled and ran away again, their dad shooting him a thankful look as he jogged after them.

Phoenix did a double take as he spotted one costume, before grinning to himself. Even if he didn't see their face, he only knew one person who would wear something like that. "Alex!" he called as he jogged up to him, already grinning. "Your costume is amazing! Seriously, dude, I was genuinely freaked out!" He gushed. He decided not to mention that he could see at least one kid who appeared to be generally terrified of Alex. "Is your abuela here? Please tell me she dressed up too," he said.

There was a figure standing a few metres away. Phoenix would have immediately recognised that figure anywhere by this point. The only reason he hesitated was because he'd said he wouldn't come. But sure enough, it was Cas, wearing a skull mask and a very, very flattering suit. "Cas!" He called, waving and beckoning Cas over, his grin widening as he did so. The small, sensible part of his brain that he had left sighed dramatically, but it was too late. He could just say hi, he told himself. He could show Cas around a little. He could just be a friendly face. It didn't have to mean anything.

Evelyn was new in town, and quickly realised that she didn't exactly know too many people. She bought a chai latte and a slice of brownie and ate them as she wandered around, stopping to buy some sunflowers from a stall. The range of costumes endeared her, from kids dressed as ghosts and skeletons and cats to... someone apparently dressed as a plague doctor? And there was everything in between.

As she strolled through the stalls, she fell in love with the people. She spotted two girls talking to each other, one dressed in steampunk gear, and another in a, frankly, adorable pastel witch outfit. "Oh my god, I know this is weird, but I love your outfits! You guys look so cool!" She gushed as she passed, but didn't stop to talk.

She spotted a familiar figure, dressed in a costume that made her smirk. She made her way over to him. "Ahoy there, matey. Glad to have a first mate on this journey of ours." She teased, tipping her hat at him. "Didn't realise this was exactly your scene. Good to know you're not too grumpy to have a little fun." She added. The fact that the two of them had basically worn the same costume made her smirk. "You know, people are going to talk about us wearing the same costume. They might even think we're friends," she teased.

"Did our mutual friend diverge any more information about what's going to go down?" She asked lightly, but the weight behind them was real. They couldn't ignore it, despite how much she wanted to just ignore it all and have a good evening.

Jaiden was casually strolling about the town, smiling away as she saw everyone in their costumes, clearly, some had been worked on for months as they were incredibly detailed, and others were, well...Last-minute projects most likely are thrown together with whatever they could find. Even those had their own campy, cliche charm to them and made her smile. There was anything from the cliche witch costumes, to werewolves and vampires, to even angels, with the halo and wings. All of the cheesy and cliche costumes caused her to roll her eyes a bit and shake her head as they were simply stereotypical costumes you'd see. But that didn't stop her from having fun and enjoying the night, as seeing normal humans joining in on the fun made her heart flutter a bit, as it was all too peaceful and happy.

She was happily enjoying the festivities when an all too familiar voice came from behind her, complimenting her outfit and how it fit her as well as it did. A small smile and blush covered her face as she heard the compliment, for once she was happy to be masked, otherwise the look on her face would have been too tall of a tell tale sign. "Heh, thank you, Rory. I spent, a bit of time on this, I'm glad you think it turned out well!" she said with a smile and awkward chuckle as she tucked her hair behind her ear, looking at her friend's costume. It was more on the cliche end of the spectrum, but it fit her and was fitting as it helped increase her usual cuteness. Jaiden was going to reply when a woman dressed in a pirate's outfit walked past them, complimenting them on their costumes, all Jaiden was able to do before the woman disappeared out of sight was being able to yell out a thank you, doubting the woman even heard it.

The witch turned back to look at Aurora and gave an awkward chuckle as she spoke, "Uhm, sorry about that. Y-you look really cute! I uh,I mean your costume is really cute. Not to say you aren't, I just mean that it looks great on you, as does everything really." she rambled out, trying to ease the awkwardness and unease she felt, but the more she spoke the more she realized how awkward she was making things, she just hoped Aurora hadn't assumed anything, she was simply just trying to return a compliment back to Aurora, that was all. At least that's what she kept internally telling herself.

Markus had been enjoying himself a bit as he strolled through the town, enjoying the sights and people, which he usually didn't. But it was Halloween after all and he usually loved this holiday, one of the few things in life that still gave him a bit of relief in his otherwise monotonous and boring life. He was silently enjoying things as he heard an all too familiar voice call out to him from the crowd, stopping in his tracks with his back turned, Oh come on, she already found me? Fuck.., he thought to himself as he slowly turned around to see the woman that called out to him. Sure enough, it was Evelyn, and to his utter shock, and some may even say his dismay, sure enough, they had managed to completely and utterly match costume ideas.

A small sigh escaped his lips as he knew he should be nicer to her than he normally wouldn't be, he wasn't entirely heartless and cold. Besides, while she did tend to ramble, a lot, he had to remind himself that she didn't mean any harm or annoyance, she simply wanted to know more. A small smile spread across his lips as he spoke giving her a small bow, "Aye aye, Cap'n." he teased, his smirk lasting a little more than normal. His normal expression soon overcame his face when she mentioned him being grumpy and old, simply rolling his eyes he dismissed the tease. "I for one love Halloween, and I'm not grumpy, I just simply don't have the mindset for human things anymore. I'm sorry I let my age get the better of me sometimes. I may look young, but I don't always feel it." he gave her a bit of a teasing smile and wink, walking a bit as they resumed talking.

His eyebrow twitched a bit at the mention of the Hunter, it was too exposed and out in the open where they were. People could possibly overhear them and that was the last thing he wanted. To cause mass hysteria and panic in a large crowd like this. He simply gave her the side eye until they managed to walk somewhere more private and less people focused. It was an area with a few benches and tables, clearly set up if large groups or family's wanted to sit and eat together. When he was sure they weren't being watched or followed he thought about what had transpired after Evelyn left his house. How the silence was welcoming.

Markus shot her a look before he spoke, "Not much of anything useful, really. Just that an attack would be coming, sometime soon and that if we weren't careful or got out of here innocent people would be put at risk. But we can't evacuate a whole town of people like us, too obvious and glaring, ontop of dangerous and questionable." he said, speaking quietly, making sure his senses kept him aware at all times of his surroundings.

"I don't know how many are here, if any more, but I doubt there was only two. I suspect more will be coming eventually. Don't trust or talk about this to anyone you don't know or is new here, we don't know who we can or cannot trust. Except for other people like us, but not everyone is open about it." he said with a solemn and urgent tone. His expression changed as did his voice as he gave her a look as he stood up, "It's Halloween, and you need to enjoy yourself. As well as it really being your first time here and seeing the town, you should go make some friends, I think I know some you may end up liking." he said as he gave her a small smile, as if being genuine. He was, she needed some friends, but this was also a last ditch attempt on his part to get her off of his back and give him some peace away from her. She talked too much for his liking, he put up with her as much as she could, it was just the talking...

Alex was spending most of his time trying not to run into people, and wishing he'd worn a half mask, at least. He could've done with better visibility, and the ability to, you know, actually have something to eat or drink. The few people that stopped to ask him questions about his costume were met with much more information than they really wanted, and he was once again reminded that most people just didn't care about historical accuracy when met with modern costuming techniques.

Alex heard his name, and before he could even see the other person called back, "Hey, Nix!" As Phoenix gushed about his costume, he took a quick step back so he could actually see Phoenix's. He nodded slowly, "Hey, thanks. I kind of ran out of time in the end, didn't have time to work out the mask how I wanted. Speaking of; around March next year, remind me that I should absolutely not go with a costume that requires a full mask." He cleared his throat, "Those wings are sweet. I'm gonna need to get a better look later without the mask. I'd do it now, but once I take this thing off, I doubt it's going back on." When asked about his Abuela, he shook his head, "She and Louise are... bats? I think. That's what they said, but the likeness isn't that great. Mostly I think they're trying to be sexy, which..." He sighed, "Don't get me wrong- I'm all for that normally, and it's not even that they're in their 60's... But, you know, there is the whole 'my grandma is wearing that.' Anyway, she ditched me, apparently I cramp her style. She's probably off trying to get drunk." He rolled his eyes, also tossing his head back semi-dramatically.

Then Phoenix spotted Cas, and Alex nodded, more to himself than anything. This guy was new in town, and Alex knew nothing about him other than he was very attractive, and tall, and apparently really liked jam. Alex leaned in closer to Phoenix, and quickly said, "Okay, what's the plan? Should I flirt with you, make him jealous, maybe he'll make a move. I could flirt with him, make him feel like he has to make some sort of a choice- I won't blow it for you, don't worry." He shrugged, "I could be myself, which, honestly, is the most dangerous option here. He's very pretty." He was mostly joking, and was pretty sure that Phoenix would catch on to that, even without seeing the mischievous grin on his face.

Imageβ€œIt turned out amazing! I wish I was that talented” Aurora said with a small sigh but a smile on her face. β€œLucinda helped me with most of the putting together - I just got to pick the colors” She giggled, as she remembered sitting at the Carson’s dining table while Lucinda stitched the skirt. Lucinda was amazing, but the more time she spent with her the more Rory missed her own mother.

Rory turned to face Evelyn just as the vampire was already making her way back through the crowd offering her a small smile and gratitude. Evelyn was one of the most conflicted people she had ever met, besides Alex, but she was a sweetie deep down. Aurora made a mental note to talk to her more.

As Jaiden rambled on Aurora giggled, placing a hand on Jaiden’s shoulder in a friendly β€˜I know what you mean’ sort of fashion but also eased a bit of comfort her way through touch. β€œThank you! You look great too as always” Rory could sense the crowd was making Jaiden a little nervous and decided to divert to a more comfortable topic. β€œHave you seen any of the others? Alex told me he was dressing creepy” She rolled her eyes slightly. β€œI tried to get him to be a sunflower, but he wouldn’t budge. Can you imagine how great that would’ve been? I had my Gardner outfit all planned out”.

Cas was glancing at some Talismans from a Shaman’s small booth when he heard his name being called. He froze in place, his face blushing a faint rose as he recognized the voice instantly. Cas turned slowly hoping - praying that the voice didn’t belong to Phoenix and he was simply just hearing things. Shit. As he locked eyes with the witch he felt a mix of instant regret and something else - excitement? No, that couldn’t really be right. Phoenix was standing next to another man, one he recognized faintly from the cafe the first time he had ever walked in. Cas had seen him around a few times since then, but never stopped to chat. He found that he subconsciously walking towards the two, a charming smile on his face. Talking to Phoenix would most likely make leaving in the morning much more complicated. He hadn’t planned on telling anyone, his stay was getting suspicious nonetheless. Not to mention he knew he was getting way too attached to the people in this town.

As he got closer to the two, he began to make out their costumes. A- Al, Alex. Alex. That was it, was wearing some morbid plague doctor get-up which frankly matched the dark cloud that Cas always felt surrounded him. He then turned to Phoenix his smile faltering slightly as he looked at the midnight black wings attached to his back. Cas shoved his hands in his pockets to keep them from shaking as he felt his face pale. Of course, of course this would happen. He cursed the heavens in his mind as he coughed slightly to break the awkward tension, the smile reappearing on his face. β€œSorry, I think there was definitely something else in that Apple Cider” His laugh was curt and a bit strained. Cas turned quickly to Alex thinking about offering a hand to shake but decided against it. β€œI don’t think we’ve been properly introduced I’m Cas Davis. I’m sure you might know me as the man who has been buying up all of Woods’s jams” He nodded in Phoenix’s direction with a slight wink.

Phoenix laughed as Alex asked him to remind him not to wear a full mask the following year. Frankly, the thought of one just seemed outright claustrophobic to Phoenix, but Alex had seemed excited about it at first. And Phoenix didn't exactly have room to judge- had he had time, effort, resources, he might have put a little more effort in to his own costume. But he was happy with how it had turned out, even still. Phoenix grinned as Alex complimented them.

Alex's questions about what he should do as Cas approached, and Phoenix barely had time to respond. "Just be yourself, okay? That's more than enough," he said with a grin. But he didn't have time to dwell on it. There was something... strange in Cas' behaviour. At first, he seemed that perfect flawless figure he always was, cool and calm and collected. And then, suddenly, he paled, seeming panicky for just a moment. He recovered quickly, but Phoenix could see the few cracks in the perfect mask for the first time. But the slight wink made Phoenix grin and blush a little.

"Cas, this is Alex. Alex, Cas. Alex and I have been friends since we were kids. And Cas' purchases of jam have probably bought my food for the rest of the month. When you combine that with the charming conversation and company, it's an absolute delight serving you," he said to Cas with a beaming smile. "So, has the Fall Festival made you fall completely in love with Greythorne yet? It's probably my favourite time of year, if I'm being honest," he said. He decided not to dwell on Cas' momentary discomfort. It was probably just Alex's costume. It seemed to unnerve everyone. There was a small voice in his head that reminded him that Cas had only paled as he'd turned to look at Phoenix, but the reasoning behind that was a place that Phoenix didn't want to go right now.

Evelyn just smirked as Markus rolled his eyes. She'd discovered that calling him an old man was an effective and satisfying way to irritate him just a little, and she seemed to get mileage out of it every time she used it. This time was no different as he explained himself more than necessary. "Sure thing, Grandpa," she retorted with a smirk as they began to walk. She knew exactly what that look meant. No hunter talk in somewhere as public as this. But she hadn't actually said the word hunter, and he had room to be as vague as he liked. He was the one who said the word "attack", in her defense, although he did wait at least until they were away from the crowds.

The change in his tone made her raise an eyebrow, as he went from making plans to telling her to go make friends, essentially. "Figured that figuring out this whole hunter problem is probably a better use of my time right now. Especially because I've got all of eternity to make friends," she said. The words were out before she realised how she'd let the venom seep in to them, her hatred at the thought of living and living and living forever. She'd wanted to live a long life, but never this long. Not with all of the unpleasantness it brought.

"How did you reconcile yourself to this life?" She asked suddenly, not looking at him. "The thought of... living forever, and ever, the only end in sight brought about by someone else. Like, I wanted to live to a hundred, just because that's a really cool achievement. But like, vampires live for hundreds of years. And hundreds of years is way longer than I ever anticipated. How do you even... make friends if you know you're going to live that long? If they're mortal, they're just going to die. If they're immortal, surely you're just eventually going to get fed up of each other. And then they've also got to deal with the whole... drinking blood to survive thing," she said. "With their friend being a monster."

Jaiden smiled as Aurora explained that she had help with the costume and that she was happy that it turned out as well as it did. She blushed when she complimented how well her own costume looked and that Aurora wished she was as talented as Jaiden in costume design. Jaiden chuckled awkwardly as Aurora placed her hand on her shoulder, giving a small smile, "I could always help teach you how to make costumes if you ever had the time? It's rather easy if I'm being honest." she stated plainly. Finally looking around to see if she could find anyone else that they knew when Aurora changed subjects, it was obvious she tried to help ease the awkwardness that Jaiden was feeling. As of right now she didn't see anyone else of note, "I don't think I see anyone else, and if I do, I don't really recognize them right now. And of course Alex would do something scary, he's always going overboard with the whole thing." Jaiden said with a small smile and chuckle, trying to see if she could find anyone, but with everyone in costumes, it'd be harder to find them.

Markus found himself giving her a bit of glare when she called him old, especially grandpa, maybe telling her his real age was a mistake, one he was beginning to regret. It was obvious she wasn't going to let it go, as well as he could tell she was doing it to simply piss him off a bit, mainly testing the waters. He took a deep breath and composed himself, it would be best to not start something in such a public place, as well as over something as trivial as a small tease. "I'm not that old, ya know." he said as he gave her a small and quick grin, looking over the crowd as they continued talking. He looked at Evelyn when she began speaking again, bringing back up the talk about the hunters and how it would be a better way of her time than enjoying the festival.

He could understand that, it made sense, and in all honesty it's what he should have been doing. He should have stayed home and kept his eye on the Hunter in his basement, but he shook that thought out of his head as he looked back up when she began asking how did he ever learn to accept a life like the one they had, never aging, seeing people grow old and pass on, or become one like them. It was something he hadn't thought about in a long time, if he was being honest with himself. He sat there with his arms folded as he thought. Markus thought to himself, his jaw remaining clenched as he was in deep thought, he could easily tell her what she wanted to hear, or at least bullshit and lie his way and give her false hope, but he knew he needed to be honest with her. "The thing is, you don't." he said softly and plainly as he finally looked her in the eyes, his dark eyes showing as much needed emotion as he would need to.

Markus sighed as he stood up, his arms crossed over his chest as he continued talking, "I could easily lie and give you false hope and make it seem like it isn't so bad. But that would be the worst thing I could do to someone. The thing about this life, is that it's not an easy one. Some are born into it, like myself...others..." he spoke as he looked from Evelyn and into some members in the crowd, seeing an older Lycan in a tuxedo and mask. "Others like you are turned against your will, and are forced to accept or live in denial. It's a life you learn to live with and accept as those you love move on and grow old while you stay young forever or grow at a much slower rate than others. It's just something you have to accept." he said with a tone of sadness in his voice as he looked away, realizing his emotions were taking over him a little. He shook his head and cleared his throat, looking out into the crowd if he saw anyone, finally seeing an all too familiar face and one he didn't mind seeing he waved and called out to her in the crowd, "Hey, Vio! There's someone you should meet!"

Violet had spent much of her time wandering around the crowded streets, seeing vendors and shops all around the town. Seeing different people in costumes made her heart flutter a bit, this was her favorite time of the year in Greythorne, that and Christmas if she was being honest with herself. She found herself eating a few churros as she was walking down the sidewalk, looking at all the lights and people. This was the one time of the year where she could in a sense be "human" again and she was going to take full advantage of it.

Violet was busily eating as she heard someone call out to her from the crowd, at first she was taken off guard, as she didn't usually hear him yell, unless he was yelling at her, but she turned to see Markus talking with a woman she had never seen before. She gave him the hand signal of just a moment and made her way to him. The closer she got to the two, the better she recognized the other person, even with the mask she could tell it was that new woman, what was her name...Eve...Eva? No, no, that's what it was, Evelyn, right. The new girl to Greythorne, and if she could remember, she was a vampire? Finally she made her way to them and gave a hardy smile to Markus, "Hey, Markie. Glad to see that you decided to show up, especially dressed up, and who's this? Your date?" she asked with a mischivious grin as she gave him a wink, looking at Evelyn she stuck out her hand for a handshake as she introduced herself, "Don't let him fool you, he isn't as grouchy or old as he may seem. Kind of a big ol' bear. I'm Violet by the way, or Vio, whichever you prefer." she said with a small chuckle, she knew full well that Markus was going to let her have it later, or at least he'd try to.

Alex- momentarily glad for the full mask- raised an eyebrow at Cas' awkward entrance, and took a moment to scan his appearance as he introduced himself, and found himself momentarily focusing on his necklace. A brief, but intense, flash of panic hit him. Calm down, Alex, he thought to himself, it's probably some part of his costume. His knowledge of history and time outside Greythorne as a teenager had made him slightly sensitive to religious icons, and his overall sense of dread- along with the risk of hunters- didn't help to soothe his anxieties. He nodded at the introduction, "Yeah, I've heard all about your, uh..." he gave a short pause, some humor in his voice, "your jams."

As Phoenix spoke about the festival, Alex absently looked around, almost as if he was already growing bored of the conversation. "The fall festival is the highlight of the year, I can't think of a better time to stumble upon the town.” He looked at Cas as he continued speaking, ”You’ve really brought your own charm with you, though. If you’re thinking about sticking around- please do. It’s been a little while since someone so... interesting came through town.”

Image"Really? I honestly might have to take you up on that offer sometime" Aurora always liked learning new things, and often spent some of her free time gaining knowledge in random skills such as how to cook an egg twenty different ways or make wreaths. After being confined to the same town for six years you really start to get creative. She didn't really mind the sameness, Greythorne was home. Standing on her tiptoes she gazed around for a few moments with a small chuckle, "I don't even think I can see over the first line of people" Rory shrugged slightly peering at the Carnival booths just a few steps away. Each booth lined with a multitude of prizes her eyes lighting up. It was no secret that fae were hoarders, not as bad as dragons of course, but shiny, interesting objects were so enticing to her. "Could I interest you in a friendly game of Ski-ball? Or darts? If I don't leave her with one of those oversized, stuffed unicorns - I might cry".

Cas bit the inside of his cheek slightly to stop his wide grin at Phoenix's introduction settling instead for a softer smile. He wondered for a brief moment if the Witch knew how adorable he was, and for a fleeting moment what he would think if he knew Cas's real indentity. It was a dangerous thought and he quickly buried it among the rest like he always did. Cas could think of two people on this planet who knew who he actually was, the rest were dead.

As he turned to Alex with a smile, chuckling at his comment. "I believe at this point half the town knows about my jams" He shot a small look in Phoenix's direction, almost teasingly. Normally, Cas turned off the little angelic abilities he had but some minds were stronger than others. It took him a small moment to decipher the jumbled mess of thoughts, but he finally realized Alex was thinking about his necklace. He hadn't even given it a second thought putting it on, it was like second nature to him most of the time. Now he realized how incriminating it might've looked surrounded by a multitude of witches. It took quite a bit of his will power not to mess with it then and there, he realized how much that small gesture might've given away. "Well it's certainly nice to finally meet you, I've heard a bit about you" He grinned out of the corner of his mouth before turning back to Phoenix.

"Greythorne definitely has caught my eye, I might need a little more convincing before I jump to love. Out of all my years traveling I have to say it's perhaps one of the most charming towns I've ever encountered. Certainly has the most charming individuals". The two would most likely think nothing of it, but Cas was getting too comfortable with the things he was saying. In a situation like this he normally turned cold and abrasive, but he couldn't - he couldn't bring himself to that, maybe not yet.

He turned back to Alex, briefly forgetting of the other witch's presence as he had gone silent. ”You humor me. I promise you that I'm the least interesting customer you've probably had.” This would've been a perfect time to casually bring up his leaving, but again he shoved it under the rug as if that would help him at all. Instead he lied, like always. "Perhaps I might, so far everyone's been so welcoming. Not to mention I couldn't leave without a years worth supply of everything in Phoenix's cafe - and there's no telling how long that might take him".

Phoenxix just blushed and grinned a little awkwardly as Cas remarked that it seemed half the town knew about the jam and shot him a teasing glance. It wasn't that he was telling everyone. It was more so that he was gushing to all of his friends, and sometimes got a little carried away. He knew he shouldn't let himself get so carried away, that he should be a little more guarded. But then he saw that grin and couldn't stop himself.

Phoenix raised an eyebrow as Cas said that he might need a little more convincing before he would say he was in love with the town, almost taking that as a challenge. Perhaps Phoenix was biased. But despite having his heart broken countless times there, despite knowing that leaving mightn't really be an option for him, he had never felt the desire to leave. Everything he needed was right here.

Alex's comment about Cas being interesting made Phoenix glance at him, a little confused. Alex seemed to be trying to figure out more about Cas. However, the costume just made things seem ever more absurd. But Cas didn't seem to dwell on it, instead reassuring them that he was entirely uninteresting. Phoenix didn't believe that for a second. There was something about Cas, something that deeply intrigued Phoenix. The fact that he seemed to appear from nowhere and seemed to be lingering made him curious. He knew that if there were hunters about, there was a chance that that mystery was just danger. But Phoenix didn't get that impression. Surely someone that beautiful couldn't be that dangerous.

He raised an eyebrow as Cas seemed to imply he'd be sticking around for a while. "Oh, you made the mistake of telling me now. Because I'll just pretend that I'm working on the order and refuse to ever finish it, trapping you here with the promise of more baked goods. Like the evil witch from some children's story," he said with a wicked grin, leaning in a little. "Or the brave and witty hero, depending on what part you're going to play."

Jaiden smiled as Aurora took up her offer for learning how to make costumes, it would not only be able for her to learn something knew, but it would help Jaiden as well. Going out of her element wasn't something she did very often, but she felt like she should, for a friend. Right? She shook her head to get out of her thoughts, now wasn't the time for that, she needed to focus on the friend she was with, finally when she listened she managed to pick up the last part which was about wanting to know if Jaiden was up for a game of ski-ball or darts. The young witch was one for healthy competition, especially at the fair. The games they had were fun, she knew they were rigged, but they didn't cost much and it would give the two the opportunity to finally have some fun.

A smile spread across her face as she over dramatically cracked her knuckles, "I am so down for ski-ball, or anything else you might wanna do. Just know, I won't hold back from kicking your butt." she grinned as the two began to walk past the crowd of masked people, "Also, you are so going to get one of those unicorns tonight, or so help me if we have to play all night." she said with a small chuckle.

xxxwhat do you want from me?

Evelyn had at least been hoping for a few words of comfort, for something about "it gets easier!" She probably should have known Markus was the wrong person to ask for it. But at least he was honest. That much she could appreciate. But even if she was a monster, even if she had no intention of staying this way for the rest of eternity, she couldn't see herself doing what Markus did and basically closing himself off, not really having any friends. It was just she'd much rather be the one to grow old instead of the one having to watch.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow as Markus stopped and waved somebody over. It was a girl in her late teens, wearing a frankly adorable costume. Despite herself, Evelyn's face brightened a little. It lit up entirely as the girl also started teasing Markus. Teasing Markus by herself was fun, but doing it with somebody else? Even better.

"I'm Evelyn. And god no, he's not my date. He wishes," she said, lowering her voice into a mock whisper at the last part, before her face cracked into a grin. "So, Vio, how did you meet our mutual friend here? Do you know all of the fun stories about him? Because frankly I'm just dying for material, calling him old constantly just goes so far." She gushed, getting to her feet and looking between the two.

Part of this was an act. To convince everyone else that she was fine, that the loneliness had just been a momentarily blip and that she was back to her usual happy go lucky self. Part of it was to convince herself. Dwelling on loneliness wouldn't be healthy. And, besides, she'd get this figured out. She'd find a way to claw back her mortality, her humanity, no matter what.

Almost immediately regret hit Markus. The fact that both Evelyn and Violet began teasing and poking fun at him caused regret to fill him. Was it too late to call it off and just leave? But no, if he did that Violet would just give away all of his secrets and embarrassing stories to Evelyn, who could then turn it into even more teasing, something he was already growing tired and old of. He looked at the two girls that were conversing, easily poking fun at him in almost every way. A low and small growled passed his lips as he shook his head, finally deciding to break up the chaos that was slowly unfolding before his very eyes, due to his part really. Markus looked at Evelyn and rolled his eyes before he spoke, "Trust me, Evelyn. You aren't my type." he rattled off with first before turning to Violet, who he gave a very stern look for only a moment before a smile creased his lips. He had known her for a very long time and she was one of the few people he could tolerate, mainly due to their past, which to Markus was a special one.

Markus turned back to Evelyn when she asked how they met, a small sigh escaped his lips as he thought it would be best to break it to Evelyn before Violet did, as he knew it was hard for her to talk about. And seeing the look on Violet's face after she was asked, he knew he had to be the one. He looked at Evelyn with a rather solemn and sad expression as he spoke, his voice was soft and filled with a tinge of sadness, "I've known her for years...She's been in this town for ages, literally." he started, he slowly moved closer to Evelyn for a moment as he spoke low, knowing full well Violet didn't like the topic of what they were discussing. "Violet used to be human, but on nights like this, she can be in a sense, alive again." he put an emphasis on the word alive, hoping Evelyn was able to pick up what he was implying. His relationship and past with Violet was a long one, and he knew her better than anyone, and visa versa.

Violet gave Evelyn a smile as she introduced herself, and chuckled as she asked if Violet knew any embarrassing stories. Covering half of her mouth with her hand that she flattened out as if Markus wasn't allowed to hear, "I know all the stories about Markus, so I got you there." she said with a mischievous grin and chuckle. But her once happy and bubbly attitude all but faded as Evelyn had asked how they met, their past was something that was incredibly important to Violet, and talking about it in great detail caused her to form some anxiety and uneasy feeling in her stomach whenever she was asked about her past. She remembered everything in her past life as a human as the years dragged on, slowly they all came back and she was filled with a void of sadness and emptiness, as something was missing. Her literal mortality and humanity, something she wanted back, she wanted to be human again all the time and be able to live a life again like everyone else in Greythorne, but she knew it was impossible, right? Once you die, you're dead and there's no way to bring you back from that, at least that's what everyone thought.

Violet was taken back from her thoughts when she saw Markus talk to Evelyn, explaining that she was a ghost, trying his best to not use the word around her as she knew he didn't like using it, especially around her. "it's okay, Markie. You can say the word ghost, it isn't going to kill me or anything." she said, her morbid humor showing a bit, not having intended it, but it happened and she went along with it. "Besides, it isn't so bad, especially on nights like this, just wished it lasted forever, ya know? Anyway, do you guys wanna go and do something, or are we just gonna sit around here like wallflowers and continue being hermits as everyone else has fun?" she questioned, as she didn't want to stand around and do nothing for the remainder on the night of her being able to be as human as she possibly could be.

Alex listened to Cas, and he listened to Phoenix, and he looked at their faces as they spoke, listened to their tones and inflections, and suddenly felt like he was in high school again; always some sort of third wheel to some possible relationship that didn’t even exist, because Phoenix seemed to fall in love with every guy who looked his way. At the same time, Alex felt a certain level of protectiveness over Phoenix. He knew Phoenix didn’t need anyone protecting him, and he also knew that out of everyone in town, Alex was not one to be talking about being cautious and taking things slow, but he’d seen Phoenix through some dark times, and Phoenix had seen him through dark times as well, but Alex especially didn’t ever want to see his best friend hurt in the ways he’d been hurt before.

Still, he felt the need to give the two some privacy, if only for a moment. There was definitely something the two of them needed to work out, and he didn’t particularly want to sit around and wait to see if they would get around to it. He waited for a lull in the conversation before turning to Phoenix, β€œHey, I’m gonna go see if I can find something to drink. Want anything?” The offer was more about telling Phoenix that he would be coming back than it was an actual offer, because he had been known to use similar tactics to escape uncomfortable situations and never return. Although, if Phoenix said he didn’t want anything, it was entirely possible that Alex just wouldn’t come back, and he would be telling himself he was giving Phoenix some privacy.

As he turned to walk away, he leaned in and added, β€œBe careful, okay?” Over the years, Alex had said those words to Phoenix more times than he could count, and he wouldn’t be surprised if they’d lost all meaning. Most of the time, he couldn’t even tell Phoenix why he needed to be careful, just that he’d had an ominous dream or a gnawing feeling in his gut, and neither of those had ever proved to be particularly accurate. Still, Alex appreciated that Phoenix took him seriously, still. He knew it would sometimes be easier to brush him off as a man with persistent nightmares and an anxiety disorder. Sometimes he wondered, himself, if that wasn’t all there was to it. If it weren’t for the occasional waking vision, he might be convinced of it, himself. No one’s future, it seems, is set in stone.

As he walked away, he felt a familiar ice cold sensation on the back of his neck; someone was trying to get his attention. He looked around briefly, but saw nothing out of the ordinary, so he brushed it off. Spirits tended to mess with him more, this time of the year. He knew the veil between the living and the dead was thinner, and he also knew that a necromancer was sort of a beacon in the night. They all knew he was there, knew he could easily perceive them- even if no one else could. Sometimes they warned him of things, but without opening up to let them speak to him, it could be difficult to discern just what they wanted.

He was stopped a few times, first by a little girl who’s mom assured her that Alex’s costume was, indeed, just a costume, but she needed some proof. So he briefly took off his mask- and was met with another chill down his neck (which he ignored)- so he could talk to her for a moment, bent down at her level. With the mask off his head, she suddenly wasn’t so scared of it, and wanted to inspect every piece. As the girl and her mother walked away, Alex thought he heard a faint, look up! And while he wasn’t entirely sure if it was an audible voice or not, he listened. A small flock of ravens flew overhead, and Alex found himself quickly counting them. Thirteen. He quickly reminded himself that everything in life is not an omen, and that birds fly over the town all the time. He bought a cup of hot chocolate, was stopped by someone wondering if they had to buy tickets for the games (they seemed to swap out their methods yearly), and his response of β€œI don’t really know. I’m banned from playing them, so I didn’t bother to check.” was apparently unsatisfactory.

He took off one of his gloves to check his phone, partly because he wanted to text Phoenix to let him know that he’d be heading back soon, and also to make sure that nobody needed him. He started typing out a quick text when someone bumped into his shoulder, causing him to fumble and hit send on a text that read ”Hey, I” just before he dropped his phone to the ground, and simultaneously spilled hot chocolate all over himself. Swearing under his breath, he turned to see who had run into him, but whoever it was had disappeared into the crowd. He bent to pick up his phone, but someone managed to kick it just right so it careened just past the booths and vendors, not so far that it was out of sight, but far enough to make Alex wonder if that had even been accidental.

He pushed those thoughts out of his head and walked over to get his phone, intending to check it over for damage and head straight back to his friends. As he did that, he heard a small commotion from a nearby alleyway. Nope. Not doing that. Not going there. He started to turn to leave, but found himself face-to-face with someone he didn’t immediately recognize. β€œOh, um-” he started to apologize and slip past the man, but he was interrupted.

β€œSorry to bother you, but my friend came this way, and I haven’t seen him in a few minutes. Going to look for him by myself kind of freaks me out, would you mind helping me?” Alex didn’t know why, but he agreed. Maybe it was the charming smile, maybe it was the way the man grabbed his arm and started leading him along before he had even chosen.

It didn’t take long before Alex found himself in that alleyway, surrounded. He sighed, almost defeated, β€œLook, I don’t know-” A fist to the nose shut him up quickly, and he suddenly understood exactly what was going on. Five against one was the farthest thing from fair, and he suddenly felt very small.

β€œWhat do you think he is?”

β€œDoes it matter? Let’s make it quick.”

”You need to try to run.” Said a voice in his head. Alex agreed; he needed to get out of this situation. Everyone in town needed to know what was going on, but he didn’t know how he was going to make it out of here. He started to yell, β€œHelp! There’s-” They started to come at him, and he tried to run, he did his best to fight back, but quickly enough he felt a white-hot flash of pain. He cried out in pain, sounding almost more like a wounded animal than a person.

I’m going to die… He thought to himself, as he suddenly started feeling very cold.

Imageβ€œOh you are so on Price!” Aurora said with a laugh as she grabbed Jaiden’s forearm essentially dragging her off to the multitude of carnival games. Rory couldn’t hold back her excitement as she eyed one of the large unicorns at the ring toss. At Jaiden’s comment about the unicorn she grinned, β€œyou would undeniably be my favorite for the rest of my life if you won me that unicorn”.

The two played carnival games back and forth, Jaiden winning nearly all of them. Aurora liked to think it was because she was just going easy on the witch. Still in about ten minutes the two had wracked up nearly ten different stuffed animals - so much so that Aurora had given at least three to a small pixie girl that was eyeing their hoard. It had all lead up to the perfect moment, Jaiden’s eyes trained like a hawk on the ring toss, Aurora clutching the fabric of her skirt so tight she thought it might rip. The toss seemed to happen in front of her in slow motion, so that when the ring landed perfectly on the blue bottle it was like a moment out of a movie. Rory squealed in delight, throwing her arms around Jaiden in a hug nearly knocking the witch down in the process. β€œYou did it! Oh Jai you’re amazing!” Her voice was slightly muffled as her face was buried in Jaiden’s shoulder from the hug.

Aurora only turned away when the Satyr behind the counter unhooked the giant unicorn and handed it to her. She took the thing into a giant hug, relishing in the fact that it smelled kind of like raspberries.

Phoenix’s comment earned a chuckle from Cas, his eye softening slightly as he glanced his way. Cas matched the witch’s distance, leaning in himself β€œI don’t quite mind playing the Damsel in Distress Woods, if that’s what your implying. Although I like to believe I fit much more into the role of the fire-breathing dragon”. With a smirk on his face he leaned back to look at Alex, who certainly wasn’t enjoying the flirtatious banter happening before him. Cas didn’t have much time to talk to him however, as he made no haste in offering to get Phoenix a drink before being swallowed whole by the masked crowd in front of him. A small sigh bubbled out of the Angel’s lips and he angled his head slightly towards Phoenix but kept his gaze trained on the crowd in front of him. β€œI hope I didn’t scare him away, I’m not that intimidating, right?” If you didn’t see the coy smile on his face the statement almost sounded sincere.

β€œWell, I guess it’s just the two of us - I hope you don’t mind that I’ve seemed to scare everyone else away” Cas fully turned to face Phoenix his eyes tracing the curves of the dark wings that he wore on his back. It seemed that his heart began to beat a little faster now, and he was definitely feeling nervous. He couldn’t exactly understand why however, there was nothing to be nervous about. Yet as he found himself staring into the witch’s steely grey-blue eyes, Cas just knew. β€œPhoenix, I - ” His eyes darkened suddenly as he abruptly stopped his sentence, his eyes frantically searching the seemingly normal crowd of festival goers around him. Cas gripped Phoenix’s upper arm, probably too tight, and pulled him to his side his eyes not leaving the crowd. β€œSomething’s not right” His voice came out as a whisper, so quiet it seemed to fade into the noise of the festival. This entire time, Cas had been quietly filtering out the thoughts in his head bouncing around from those near him. He was glad he finally decided to listen to what they were saying. β€œYou need to leave, now” Cas turned to Phoenix his eyes dark and his tone commanding. He wasn’t offering the witch a choice, he was telling him what to do. Cas knew it was abrupt but he needed to get Phoenix out of here, he refused to acknowledge why he cared so much. Even though he already was beginning to figure out the answer.

A massive grin formed on her face when she has pulled ahead to the area for where all the fair games were held, in a small little area away from most people were, so no one would be hurt or get in the way of people playing. Jaiden chuckled at Aurora's comment that she would be the fairy's favorite person if she managed to win the stuffed unicorn, which was always such a hard prize to win in past years, "What? You mean I'm not already?" she sarcastically retorted with an overly dramatic look on her face with outstretched arms. The two played a multitude of games, going from ski-ball to darts, to one of those strength tests, to the oh so very cliche and obviously rigged ring toss game. Jaiden had more or less become a professional at the other games, but the ring toss is where she always lost, always due to that one bottle in the center. She glared heavily at that one, it was always her downfall. Always that one pesky thing to ruin her winning streak at the carnival.

Jaiden looked up at the Saytr that stood behind the counter, eyeing her with a grin. "Still think it's your year, Price? Or are you just going to embarrass yourself again this year?" he mused as he looked at the young witch. Jaiden gave him the thousand-yard glare as she huffed, slamming down a five-dollar bill on the counter to get the five rings for the games. The saytr smirked as he handed her the rings and stood back as he planned to watch the show that would unfold. It was going to be the same thing as always, she'd land the first four, and fail on the last one. Jaiden took a deep breath as she eyed the layout in front of her, the same as every year, but this time, she was going to win and get Aurora that damned unicorn, even if it killed her. The first four rings were an easy win for her, they always were, now, now it was time for the real test. That pesky blue bottle in the middle, her eyes made that her target as she grasped the last ring. With a small pop of her neck and a deep breath she tossed the small ring, seemingly in slow motion in left her fingertips, flying through the air until there was a soft metal clang of the ring landed around the neck of the bottle.

Her eyes widened as she saw it land, a large grin appeared on her face as she looked at the saytr behind the counter, quickly giving him the bird before she felt herself being forced into a hug by Aurora who squealed with happiness and delight, almost having been taken to the ground as she wasn't expecting to be hugged so forcefully or suddenly. Jaiden smiled and hugged the fairy girl back, fixing her hair a bit after the hug. Turning to the man behind the desk she motioned with her hand, "C'mon, give the girl the damned unicorn." she said as the saytr chuckled, handing her the stuffed prize. Jaiden turned to Aurora and with a flush and flurry, she handed her the stuffed prize with a smile, "For you, m'lady." she said with a small smile. As the two finally walked away from the booth she turned back to the saytr and mouthed out "suck it" with an overdramatic way, turning back she beamed back up with a happy tone, "So, now that you have your prize, what's next-" she stopped in her tracks as something felt...Wrong. There was no other word to describe it, it was just the feeling one gets before something bad happens, or already happened and you just get that sinking feeling in your gut. Jaiden looked around for anything out of the ordinary. There was nothing, until her eyes scanned down a small alleyway, there was a group of people and someone was on the ground, it took a moment, but she knew who that was. Even in the costume, she knew who it was. It was Alex, just something in her gut told it was him.

It was then that reality hit her, they weren't safe here anymore. A random group of people, more than likely Hunters were now here, and were already starting to attack people. She had to act fast, and so she did. Jaiden turned to Aurora, and with a solemn look on her face she spoke quietly, "You need to get out of here, it isn't safe anymore, Rory. Just, trust me, okay? I'll see you later, you just need to find our friends and get out of here, now." she said as she turned her back on the young fairy and began her walk to Alex, dodging and weaving between people, people that were so unaware of what was going on. Finally she made her way passed all of the people, standing in the entrance to the alleyway she could feel that sensation coming back, that small voice in the back of her head. It was something she hadn't felt since the day of the accident, but here it was again, and this time, it was louder. More demanding, and angry. She found herself forming a small spark at the end of her fingertips as she finally felt even the smallest ounce of courage to finally make her presence known. "You douchebags, leave him the fuck alone." she called out, her voice not sounding as threatening as she had originally planned.

The men stopped for a moment as they looked up, eyeing her. They all laughed when they saw the costume, that sure as hell wasn't helping. One of them, the larger one in the group spoke up, "And what are you going to do?" he called out as he took a large metal pipe and began walking towards her. Jaiden's face was next to emotionless as a large orb of fire slowly formed in her hand, holding it up infront of her she took a step forwards, "Don't make me, because I really don't want to hurt anyone else." she muttered, the man smirked as he continued walking forwards. Jaiden cracked her neck quickly as she watched the man close in on her, "Alright, but I warned you." she said as she caused a large pillar of fire to abruptly appear in front of the man, causing him to jump backwards as it came near centimeters from frying the hair off of his head and face, "I said, fuck off." she said coldly, slowly walking towards the group, forming large pillars around the men. Panic and fear formed on their faces as they finally gave up their cause and began to make a run for it, leaving the two witches alone, but before the man with the pipe spoke up. "You shouldn't have done that.." was all he said as he turned and left, fleeing into the woods with the others. Jaiden quickly ran up to Alex as the pillars of fire were extinqushed, kneeling down she gently touched Alex's shoulder, "Alex? Are you okay?" she questioned with immense worry as she removed her mask, not wanting to deal with it anymore. She knew it was no longer safe for them to be there, and they'd need to leave.

Phoenix had been so lost in his complete and utter delight that Cas seemed to actually be flirting back that he almost missed Alex's awkwardness. It wasn't the first time he'd been in this scenario either. As a teenager, Phoenix had dragged Alex along when he'd been going to talk to whoever Phoenix's latest crush was, mostly as back-up or so somebody with a bit of sense could drag him away if things went south. He shot Alex an apologetic grin as the other man walked away, nodding ever so slightly as Alex warned him, as always, to be careful. At this stage, it could have meant a number of things. Be careful, this man is still a stranger, you don't know that he's not dangerous.

Or possibly just, "be careful, don't get your heart broken again, I can't face having to watch disney movies with you as you sob into your ice cream. again."

But then Alex went, and Cas made a comment about scaring his friends off, and Phoenix was lost in the conversation all over again. "They scare easily. But I've never been afraid of fire breathing dragons," Phoenix retorted, smirking a little. He suddenly became acutely aware of how close Cas was to him, close enough that he could smell his aftershave. Subtle, sophisticated, and entirely unfamiliar. Phoenix met those shocking blue eyes and he could feel his heart pounding, his breath almost catching in his throat. Somewhere, feeling as though it was entirely disconnected, his phone buzzed.

And then there was a change in Cas' expression, and he grabbed Phoenix's arm and pulled him slightly out of the crowd. Cas' voice was barely a whisper, but Phoenix heard it. He could also hear and see that... fear. Not fear for himself. But fear for what was about to happen. He glanced at his phone to see if anyone had texted him, but just frowned at Alex's half text. Cas told him to leave.

"Cas, what the hell is going on? I can handle..." Phoenix trailed off as the pieces clicked in to place. The text. The sudden panicked faces of those around him. And that awful feeling that something was wrong.

"Something's happened to Alex." He didn't even realise he was saying it until it was out, and then he was running, shoving his way through the crowd. He saw Jaiden a few hundred feet in front of him, saw the distinctive light of flickering flames, and followed them down an alley, where sure enough, he found Alex and Jaiden. Alex was on the ground, with Jaiden kneeling beside him. "Oh my god. What happened?" He asked, taking a few steps closer.

He didn't know how he heard it when he did. He didn't know how he noticed or how he reacted fast enough. But he heard footsteps behind him and turned to see a glint of something silver heading for his heart.Vines erupted from the earth beneath them and abruptly dragged the man away, but not before the knife had a chance to tear a ragged cut along Phoenix's shoulder. He cried out in pain as the cut burned far more than its shallow depth should have allowed. The knife had to be pure silver. The vines had pinned the man to the ground, and Phoenix kicked away the knife. "Greythorne isn't going to survive much longer," the man swore, struggling against the vines. Phoenix could feel the reflexive increase in energy as they tightened around him. "You'll all burn in hell. You have no idea what's coming," the man added. Phoenix just stared, terrified as he realised he had no idea what to do next. He turned around to see Alex still on the ground, and Phoenix swore he could see blood. His own shoulder felt like it was on fire. And apparently this was only the beginning.

xxxwhat do you want from me?

Evelyn just playfully raised an eyebrow as Markus grumbled that she wasn't his type. She almost immediately picked up on what Markus meant. Violet was a ghost. Literally haunting the town. She nodded knowingly, but Violet confirmed it. Ghost. Evelyn wondered what that had to be like. At least she had some hope of a... a cure. What did Violet have?

But Violet clearly seemed eager to brighten the conversation up, and Evelyn went along with it. Talking about how terrible her life was had never been her style, and she didn't plan on starting now. So when Violet asked if they were going to go have some fun, Evelyn beamed. "Can't speak for Mr. Grumpy there, but I want to play some games. Ooh, or did you see the carousel? All the horses are painted to look spooky, it looks so cool."

But as Evelyn looked back towards the fair, she felt something... off. Some people around seemed tense and worried, and they hadn't been a few seconds beforehand. Something was off. She shot a knowing look at Markus. Perhaps the information they'd gotten had been right after all.

"How about we go take a walk around the fair first? See what's happening, what there is to do, just... really take everything in?" She said, hoping he'd get her meaning. She wanted to have a scout around, see if there was anything... strange happening. Just to check.

Alex was having a hard time focusing, even still, he heard Jaiden's voice. He couldn't quite make out what she'd said, like he was underwater. He felt the heat (he welcomed it. It was getting colder by the second), and he heard her ask if he was okay. Hand pressed to his lower abdomen, he managed, "I think they stabbed me?" He felt tears welling in his eyes, "I- I couldn't... I didn't..." He couldn't seem to form a coherent thought.

Suddenly, he felt something that could only be described as feeling like diving face-first into an ice cold lake, except nothing like that at all. He gasped, and shot to his feet, moving straight through Jaiden as if she weren't there at all. He first instinct was that he had died, but when he turned to look, his body wasn't there. He wasn't in any pain, and he couldn't decide if that was a good thing or not. Instead of blood, some sort of glowing white substance was leaking from his wound, and floating up into the sky. Weird. "Do you-" He started, but he quickly realized that Jaiden couldn't see him, he turned to see Phoenix, he hadn't even noticed he was there before.

Alex turned and tried to see if there was anything he could do to figure out what was going on, and he quickly found that movement was going to be an interesting task. The alley, which moments ago seemed appropriately scaled to the town, now seemed to stretch on forever, as if purposely built to be daunting. He started looking into his pockets, found his phone was there, briefly thanked the universe that he'd been able to get it there. He tried to see if he could send out a quick 'hey, no worries, I'm probably okay' text, but most of the features didn't seem to work. The flashlight was functioning, and while he didn't know what good it would do, he did flash it a few times- as it did make him feel a little more grounded. "Great. I have a flashlight. That's exactly what I need. That's really going to help."

If he was being honest with himself, Oliver really didn't want to be on festival duty. His mother had insisted he work First Aid, but Oli knew it was a simple attempt to get him to socialize more with the townsfolk. What good that was doing too. He didn't understand why she cared so much about him putting himself out there. They'd only be in Greythorne for a couple more months like every town. When his mother first started opening up clinics he tried branching himself out only to find

A. He was a horrible conversationalist.
B. People were scarily unpredictable.
C. A couple months was not enough time to make friends. Good ones at least.

Yet, here he was surrounded by a few small children's rides while his parents were out enjoying the festivities. So far he had patched up three small cuts, a few hot apple cider burns, given out sixteen icepacks, and even pulled a splinter out of a child. Not that he minded helping others, he was actually quite good at it, Oliver just detested being placed in unpredictable social situations. It was so out of his element. Besides, if the worst thing he was going to see was a tiny splinter then it was going to be a pretty boring couple of hours.

So when the (crazy) fairy girl came running up to his booth and grabbed him by the collar he knew he was in trouble. God, she was tiny - but so scary. After moving to town Aurora had been in the clinic a few times, and talked his ear off with each visit. His mom loved her. Recognized her too the moment she walked in, apparently the news of her congregation's death spread fast and since the Elves were rather close with the fae they were amongst the first to chat about it. Oliver felt bad for her, yet at the same time could never understand how a person with her baggage could seem so happy.

Holding a ridiculously large unicorn in one arm she grabbed him swiftly by the collar with her other and yanked him down to her height earning a small yelp from him in the process Her eyes were frantic, he'd never seen her so upset (or even upset for that matter) "Oliver, I need you help-" She really didn't seem to be hurt anywhere as he gave her a once over "my friend is hurt. Really, really bad and I need you- please you have to do something". Oliver paled slightly at the request, how could someone get seriously injured at the festival? Perhaps the most dangerous thing here was the tiny Ferris wheel. "Well, uhm - yeah but-" He sputtered out as she barely gave him a chance to process the situation, yanking him out of the booth and through the crowd. Oliver tried to apologize to disgruntled festival goers as Aurora mowed through the crowd taking him with her. "Can you explain the injury? Broken bone? Concussion?" He called to her, of course she didn't respond. The fairy stopped abruptly pointing in the direction of a poorly lit alley. "There?" His tone was entirely afraid. She nodded before shoving him in that direction, and by the time he turned to ask her about the injury again she was gone.

Oliver stared at the alley, his mind thinking of all the horrible scenarios that could go down. Still, if someone needed help he had to. So he placed one foot in front of the other towards the dark, scary alley trying not to think about how he just took instructions from one of the greatest tricksters on the planet. When he reached the alley, Oliver did not expect the scene before him. Two people, a man and woman were hovered over another man on the ground - he really couldn't get an apt look at his face yet. And another was... well, yes, tied to the ground with vines? Oliver wasn't going to ask any questions. He had never seen any of them before, they must've never visited the clinic. The man had a particularly nasty gash in his shoulder and Oliver quickly noted the injury in his mind like his mother had taught him. The woman looked fine, just... pissed. Very pissed. Aurora never said anything about two injuries. Damn fairies. They were both too focused on the person in front of them to even acknowledge his presence so he cleared his throat awkwardly his face aflame when they finally noticed them, afraid they might pounce on him too. "I'm here to help!" He thought that was the best thing to start with, considering the woman looked murderious. "I'm uh, Oliver. Sorry erhm, Aurora sent me" He bounced on the balls of his feet suddenly wishing his mother was here, she was much better with the talking. "I- I can heal him... I think" Maybe he should've left off the last part. Sure the worst thing he'd ever healed was a broken femur but this couldn't be that bad right?

Oliver just let the healer in him take over and he kneeled to the ground next to the two hovering over the body finally glancing at the face of the person on the ground. Oh dear. Alejandro Garcia. Twenty-Three. Male. Witch. Oliver could never forget his chart. He was quite impressionable when he came in for a cold. Oli barely recognized him, he had been beaten bloody. This was no kiddy-ride accident. This was targeted. A wave of fear washed over him, and he realized that he had probably gotten in way over his head. Come on Oliver, just do your job. Oliver placed a hand at Alex's wrist. Cold, he was terrifyingly cold. For a fleeting moment he thought the man was dead. Finally he felt the faintest of a pulse, and let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. Digging into his pack he grabbed his small flashlight and briefly checked Alex's eyes, they were almost completely rolled back and dilated. Not good. Oliver quickly dug into his pack again pulling out a roll of gauze. He shoved it into the hands of the woman and pointed at the other man's gash in his shoulder. "You need to pack and apply pressure with that with guaze to stop the bleeding. I- I can't do two things at once, and Alex will die if I don't do something now" That was the only explanation Oliver offered the strangers before grabbing his small pocket knife out of his bag. There had to be internal damage. Oliver had never healed someone to this degree, this might even be a challenge for his mother. His hands were shaky as he used the knife to cut through the top of Alex's costume - he sincerely hoped he didn't mind, but it was either that or let him die. Oliver placed one hand over the other, and placed his hands directly over Alex's heart. And he closed his eyes, and pushed every ounce of magic he had into Alex's body.

Markus growled under his breath slightly at the comment of him being grumpy, he admitted he wasn't always the nicest person to be around but grumpy? That was a bit of a stretch, for him anyway. He shook his head trying to not let the comment get to him too much, she was teasing and that's all it was. He began to nod in agreement when Evelyn asked if they wanted to go have some fun and play some games, but after a moment of merely scanning the area, a chill ran down his spine. All of the small hairs on the back of his neck bristled, standing on end, as well as the tips of his ears twitched as if his wolf senses felt something before he could. It was then that he realized what it was that he felt, dread, and a primal fear he hadn't felt in some time. They were all in danger. Everyone here was at risk of being in danger, he didn't know why, not until an all too familiar smell wafted his way through the air. He knew what it was, and the scent caused him to be even more unnerved.

Blood. Someone was hurt, and by the strength of the smell, it was multiple people. If he let his wolf side take control, it would become a feeding frenzy, like a starved shark drawn to blood in the water. He knew where the target was located, "That, that would be a good idea, Eve." he mumbled, his mind elsewhere but was still able to understand what she meant. He nodded at the both of them and began to make his way towards where the scent came from, slowly shedding off his costume, dropping the hat and mask behind him as he walked, stalking the scent. Finally, he came to the scene of the smell.

Markus immediately knew what had happened, the scene before him was evident enough. Hunters were indeed here, specifically Branded ones. They were no longer safe, Greythorne was no longer safe if it ever was. He looked down at the scene before him, Alex was laying on the ground, his heartbeat was barely audible, and as he scanned the area, Jaiden was already at work on bandaging up Phoenix, the local witch with the cafe. He grunted, his skin crawled as he looked at the man trapped within the vines, "You'll be mine next." he said with a deepened voice as the wolf within was slowly crawling its way to the surface.

He looked at the others and sighed, picking up a few more scents that led into the forest, knowing full well who it was. It was the other Branded ones. Three to be specific, one smelt slightly burnt, clearly having been attacked by Jaiden, a smile formed, she did well to scare away three hunters by her own, he thought to himself. But scaring them away wouldn't do enough to keep them away forever, they would come back, with more men, heavily armed, and would slaughter everyone. He took a deep breath and stalked his way into the forest as he cracked his neck, closing his eyes for a moment, when they opened they were of his wolf's side, mimicking eyes of wolves, as well as his jaw and canine teeth elongating. He was now a predator on the hunt for its prey and he was going to track it down if it took him all night. The further he went into the forest, the stronger a smell he picked up, but this time, it was blood. Lots, and lots of blood. Markus kept to the shadows as he slowly prowled about until he saw a form in the darkness, hunched over something.

Violet picked up on what the two were trying to say, they were in danger and would need to get out of here, but not without making sure the others were safe as well. Violet too felt something was off, watching as Markus got into a trance-like state, waling away and into the crowd. She knew what that meant, and proceeded to follow after him, grabbing onto Evelyn's wrist and practically dragged her along through the crowd. Bobbing and weaving through the mass of people until they made their way into a small alleyway, where a horrific scene awaited them. Alex was on the ground being tended to by someone Violet had never seen before, but how he was acting and what he was saying showed he was there to help, clearing helping Alex. Jaiden was also there, tending to a wound on Phoenix' shoulder. A man was wrapped up in vines, clearly one of the people responsible for this attack. The aura she got off of him, as well as the one she saw radiating off of him was pure dread and malice. She growled under her breath, finally going over to Alex, seeing he was still out cold, she knelt down beside the man who was tending to him, "I-I'm a friend of his." she stuttered, gently placing her hand on him she could feel his soul slipping further and further away as his heart rate slowed more and more as time went on. "C'mon, you asshole. You can't die yet, that's my job and mine alone." she whispered softly into his ear as she looked down at Alex, there was nothing she could do, well, there was one, and it wasn't safe and would more than likely end with Alex dying. She couldn't take that risk, all she was able to do was stay there and keep her eye on him as he laid there, motionless.

ImageAurora nearly ran face first into Jaiden's back as she stopped abruptly and Rory glanced over her shoulder slightly. "What? Is something wrong?" Her face paled as Jaiden grabbed her shoulders and told her to run. "Jaiden, what do you mean? What's going on?" The witch didn't respond as she dashed off through the crowd, leaving Aurora terrified and confused. She ran after Jaiden, catching glimpses of the witch as she pushed through the crowd before seeing her break through and run into one of the side alleys. That was when she saw the crumpled form of her friend laying on the pavement and also when all hell broke loose. People began screaming and running in all directions, swallowing up the small fairy whole. She fell to the pavement scrapping her knee and ripping her tights as she was stampeded by a group of terrified townsfolk. Her unicorn plush was kicked from her grasp, and she soon lost sight of it after a few moments. Aurora managed to crawl to the side of one of the booths, using the railing to hoist herself upright. It was the same booth that she had bought cider from earlier that evening. Except the smiling Sylph that had served her was now crumpled in the corner her apron stained red with blood. Aurora's eyes widened in horror, and she tried to scream but nothing came out. Instead she stumbled backwards in fear and was only snapped out of her trance when someone running almost took her out again.

Lynn. Oh god, her baby brother. She had left him to take care of her booth. The thought of him was the only thing propelling her legs to move as she tore through the crowd to where she had set up her booth. But. Her friends, someone was hurt. It could be any of them. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed the flaming red hair of the elf that she knew worked at the clinic. The fae made a beeline for him, and allowed no questions asked before she shoved him in the direction of her friends. Oh for the love of all things good she hoped they were okay.

Aurora sprinted back to her booth, her heart sinking as an array of pots and plants were smashed and destroyed. "No, no, no" She repeated to herself as she got closer, she couldn't lose them again. Not again. A horrible sob racked her body as she neared the cart with Lynn nowhere in sight. "Lynn! Lynn where are you?" She yelled at the top of her lungs, her eyes frantically searching the crazed crowd around her. "Aurora!" She was afraid that his voice was merely a ghost until she spotted him a few booths down, cowering behind a cardboard sign. Aurora sprinted over to him, wrapping him in a hug, silent tears falling down her cheek. "Oh god, Lynn. I thought- I really-" "Aurora it's okay, I'm fine. I promise. Aurora, the hunters-" "I know, I know. You need to leave now. Tell Lucinda to lock and board the doors, okay?" Since Nymphs were Earthen spirits, they could travel by tree. It was a fascinating thing to see, and Rory had always been a little jealous of her adoptive family. "But what about you?" Lynn looked at her with pleading eyes. "I'll be fine, I promise. I just need you to get home okay. I just need to make sure you're safe." She smoothed a lone piece of hair out of his face and guided him to the small oak behind the booth. "Go" She said ushering him to it. He gave her one last sorrowful look before he faded into the tree and was gone. Aurora let out a heavy sigh of relief, wiping the tears away from her face and turning back to the chaos ensuing in front of her. Her friends. She had to find them.

Aurora tore through the crowd, as much as a girl of her stature could. She could just see the alleyway in the distance before someone grabbed the back of her dress, knocking her down onto the asphalt. Aurora promptly had the breath taken out from her as a woman brandishing a scary looking scar on her face wrestled her to the ground, pinning her arms to her sides. Rory screamed and tried to squirm but the woman had a grip of iron. "Well, what do we have here?" She spat as Rory continued to struggle in her grip. "Let me go!" The woman simply chuckled at her attempt, "how cute". Aurora knew there was no way she was getting out of this. She tried to glance around her but everybody seemed to be running and not paying attention to the small fae on the ground. As Aurora turned her head the women got a good glance at her ears and her eyes widened slightly. "A fairy huh? You know I always heard you lot were useless but I never actually believed them. Such a shame really, what a waste" The woman switched her grip to Rory's throat and squeezed. Aurora screamed in instinct but it simply came out as a choked wheeze. She desperately tried to claw at the woman's face but her grip was made of iron, and it wasn't long before Aurora's vision began to blur. Is this how her family felt? Is this what it feels like to die? Aurora struggled on a few moments longer before she eventually felt her body relax, she desperately tried to think of her friends in the moment. Of Lynn. Lynn was safe. That's all that mattered.

Cas saw Phoenix’s expression change in an instant and he knew he should’ve just been quiet about the whole ordeal. Should’ve just offered to take him home. β€œPhoenix! Wait, Phoenix stop!” Cas called after him as the witch sprinted off into the crowd leaving him in a crowd of confused festival goers. They were being ambushed. Hunters, seemingly hiding under the guises of townsfolk just waiting for the most vulnerable moment to pounce. It was clever and calculated. Humans, such troubled, mindless creatures yet so profound. Cas had been watching them make mistakes for centuries, and they only seemed to get more chaotic and messy as the years went by. He should walk away. This event would be the perfect escape for him, to leave and never come back. Cas thought about it, as he ran after Phoenix. He was getting more lenient as the years went on maybe colder, but maybe he was just tired. Tired of it all. The moving, the hiding, the lying. Or maybe it was the guilt. So many times he slipped away when he could’ve helped, so many lives lost. Sure he wasn’t the heavenly angel he once was, but Cas still had morals, he still had a heart.

By the time he reached the alley, he feared he was too late. His gaze shifted from Alex’s seemingly lifeless body to Phoenix. Cas’s eyes fell instantly to the dark maroon that had begun to bleed through the shirt on his shoulder. He wanted to go to him, heal him, comfort him, berate him for being foolish, but he kept his distance and instead held Phoenix’s gaze. It seemed that his witch friend had already begun to help patch him up. A shout at the end opposite end of the alley caught his attention. His eyes darkened. It seemed that the hunters had come looking for their friend. Cas briefly glanced to the others then to the witch helping Phoenix, β€œDo not let go of that gauze, and do not move” He didn’t need anyone else getting caught up in the violence.

Cas sprinted towards the end of the alley, his blue eyes a now steely grey. Four of the men slowed to a stop in his presence and he heard the thoughts filtering through their head. What was he? Or better yet, what could kill him? He really didn’t want to break the bad news to them. It seemed that the men didn’t want to stop and chat either as the all four charged him. For Cas it seemed as if time slowed to a stop and with the fluidity and grace of a dancer he avoided the men’s blows, knocking two off their feet and punching another square in the jaw. The fourth came up behind him and attempted to grab him from behind but Cas flipped him over his head hard on the pavement with a sickening crunch. It was then one used the distraction to stab him in the slide with a rather wicked looking blade, but Cas felt nothing at all. The man was astounded at his reaction backing away slightly. Yes, that’s right, leave Cas thought as he stared the man down. He didn’t want to kill anyone, at least not if he had to. Of course, these buffoons couldn’t take the hint. Cas had merely been putting on a show, at least to scare them off. It hadn’t seemed to work. So when two came charging at him, Cas flicked his wrist in the general direction and the mens’ neck snapped in an instant both dropping like flies. He flinched slightly at the sight, it wasn’t pretty. The man on the ground had begun to stir after being knocked out and the other one looked in horror at his two friends. β€œYou- you’re the devil!” He shouted backing down the alley as the corner of Cas’s mouth shifted up in a slight smirk. β€œSomething like that” He called after the man took of running. The angel sighed walking over to the man on the ground, crouching to his level. β€œI’m sorry” He said quietly before slowly closing his hand into a fist, the man’s neck snapping with a small crack.

Cas wiped his hands on his jeans and stood back up glancing back down the alley. It was when he finally assumed that the hunters were gone when his shoulders hunched and he fell sideways against the brick wall of the alley. His skin was so pale it had become practically translucent, and his hands were trembling. It had been years since Cas had used his abilities, as even the smallest bit drained everything from him. It was at this point he became practically, human. He coughed, wiping his hand on his mouth smearing blood on the back of his hand and no doubt his face. He probably looked like a vampire. Not to mention the wounds on his back had begun to sting. No doubt they had reopened, as if his wings had been tore off yesterday. He began to shuffle back down the alley towards the others, trying his utmost to regain his composure but felt like he had been to hell and back.

Jaiden nodded as the stranger instructed her on what to do, keeping the gauze tightly placed on the open wound, doing her best to keep it from bleeding any farther, if not being able to slow it down enough. She looked up as Violet moved from Alex to Phoenix, putting pressure on the wound as she looked past Jaiden into where the carnival was, "Go help, Aurora. She needs someone, I can sense it. I got this. I have enough time left to help.." she said softly as she nodded, Jaiden looked at her and nodded, quickly sprinting to her feet as she got up and made her way back to where the fair was, people were scattered and almost everyone had left in a mass panic. Great, people panicked, she thought to herself as she walked through the panic torn remains of the festival. She looked around and saw torn remains of damaged goods and toys, torn down booths, trambled chairs and stools. It was a mess, all because of those damned hunters. She groaned as she continued her search for Aurora, finally seeing two figures off in the distance. She kept to the shadows and alleyways, making sure she was out of sight and out of mind with whoever it was, if it was another hunter, she'd have to be careful.

She felt her heart and stomach drop when she got close enough to realize what was happening, it was some stranger holding someone up by their throat, slowly squeezing tighter and tighter, their will clearly fading fast as they were limp. It was Aurora. A small growl escaped her lips as she needed to act fast and careful, she couldn't attack the hunter and put Aurora in danger, and she couldn't be slow in case the hunter outright killed her. There was nothing she could do that would prevent the latter from happening. She shook her head as that same small voice came back in her mind, it was above a whisper, but she could hear it. She knew what it was saying, what it was trying to get her to do. It was the same voice she heard the day her parents died, well, murdered...And it was the same voice she heard earlier. It always said the same thing in a haunting whisper, Burn them. the voice said. It sent a chill down her spine, she wanted to give in and make them pay, make all the hunters pay, it would be so easy. She could do it with a snap of her fingers, and burn everything down around her. But it would make her the same monster she was years prior, nothing would have changed, she would have only gone back to letting her instincts take over, it was something she couldn't afford. Not now.

Jaiden slowly had a plan form in her mind as she slowly stepped out from the shadows, hands behind her back as she slowly proceeded forward towards the hunter and fairy. "Let her down, and we'll give you whatever you want, okay? No one else has to die." she said softly, fear was evident in her voice as she spoke. The hunter snapped her head in the direction where Jaiden came from, a small, chilling grin formed on her face, "And why would I do that?" she questioned, her voice was cold as ice and chilling to the bone. No emotion, no feeling, no humanity. As if she was a puppet on strings. Jaiden took a long sigh as she slowly moved forward, stopping as the woman took out a small silver blade, placing it right to the fairy's stomach. "Move any further, and I'll gut her." the woman stated coldly, her eyes as dark as an empty void, seeming to pierce her very soul.

The witch took a deep breath, calming her nerves. Raising her hands above her head, exposing empty hands to the woman. "You said it yourself, right? Fairy's are useless, they have no point. What you really want, is a witch. Someone useful and powerful, someone that could be on your side or give you the information that you want. So, drop her, and I'll let you have what you want." she said as calmly as she could, trying her best to sound as confident as she could. She knew what she said would hurt Aurora's feelings, but she needed to say it, to make sure she was safe and untouched, at least as much as she could help it. The woman's gaze fell from Aurora for a moment, and up to Jaiden. Eyeing her silently, a grin formed as she dropped Aurora into the hard, cold cement below. Slowly walking forwards towards Jaiden.

Perfect, she thought. With a flick of her wrist the hunter was surrounded by pillars of fire, walling her off from escaping as well as attacking her or Aurora. The woman let out a sharp hiss as she eyed the witch that stood before her, who slowly began walking. The closer she got, the smaller the pillars of fire got to her, slowly boxing the hunter in. The woman glared at jaiden as she felt the heat of the fire get closer, and closer. Her skin was slowly heating up and began to blister, as Jaiden's anger rose, the heat and power of the fire grew. Jaiden looked to the side for a moment, seeing Aurora was on the ground, her chest rising and falling, but slowly, she would be okay for now at least. Jaiden snapped her attention back to the hunter, slowly closing the distance between the two, Jaiden reached through the wall of hellish flames, latching onto the woman's wrist, squeezing tightly with a seering pain, which left a small burn on the hunter's wrist. "Let that be a warning. Get the fuck out of here, before I change my mind and burn you where you stand." she said coldly, any emotion or empathy had all but left her in the moment of when she locked eyes with the hunter.

Just as quickly as the wall of flames appeared, they were gone, the hunter looked away, cursed the witch and made a run for it, disappearing into the treeline. Burn them..., the voice sounded once more in her head. Jaiden shook her head, "Leave me alone." she mumbled under her breath. Snapping back to reality, Jaiden quickly ran over to the fairy, kneeling down beside her she checked her breathing once more, it was raspy, but she would be fine, until further notice. Jaiden gently placed her hand on the woman's shoulder, she was there, but not fully coherent. With as much strength as she could muster she gently picked Aurora up and carried her in her arms, back to the group of the others, she'd need help and Jaiden wasn't going to risk any more of her friends being hurt. Not tonight. "You'll be okay" she said softly as she neared the group still in the alley, tending to the others.

This was their home. This was supposed to be safe. They were supposed to be safe here. And all of a sudden, they weren't. All of a sudden, one of Phoenix's friends was bleeding out in an alleyway and he was clutching his own injured shoulder, able to feel his energy rapidly depleting with the energy of holding down a hunter. It felt as though the vines had wrapped around his own chest, making it harder to breathe. If he wasn't safe here, where would he be?

He only seemed to pay attention to reality again as Jaiden suddenly appeared in front of him, pressing something against his shoulder to try and slow the bleeding. It was silver, Phoenix wanted to say. It would need more tending than that, the skin would be burned, but somehow, he couldn't find the words. Cas' appearance stopped him from slipping in to the depths of his own mind again. The concern written all over his face might have flattered Phoenix at another time, but he just nodded numbly. And all of a sudden it was Violet that was there. Phoenix frowned.

"Violet, go back to Alex," he said, surprised by how steady his voice came out. Gently, and wincing slightly, he pulled her hand away from his shoulder and held the gauze in place himself. "He might need you right now." Despite the fact that he'd known Alex for what felt like forever, he had never claimed to understand his best friend's power. He'd never wanted to. He didn't even know how the hell or if it would even work in these conditions. But... Violet saw things differently, and she might be able to...

Well, worst case scenario, she couldn't do any less than Phoenix himself could.

Which was a big fat nothing.

Activity down the other end of the alleyway caught his attention. He turned just in time to see one of the men drive a knife into Cas' side. And, for a moment, Phoenix's vision went black. At that moment, it seemed his brain couldn't handle any more. He felt a release somewhere within him, one that only drove the anxiety higher. And sure enough, when his vision reappeared and he turned to look at where the man he had pinned to the ground had been, he'd somehow pulled himself out and had vanished. But he hadn't attacked any of them, having apparently realised that he was outnumbered and that one of him didn't stand a chance against even one of them. So Phoenix turned and, still clutching the gauze to his shoulder like a lifeline, almost ran down the alley to where he could see Cas, ghostly pale and shuffling towards them.

"Where did they get you? Where are you hurt?" Phoenix blurted out, searching desperately for some injury, for blood on his shirt but... despite the fact he had seen the knife go in, he couldn't see anything. Phoenix's mind couldn't quite comprehend it in it's exhausted state. "Cas, I saw them stab you," he blurted, still not quite... understanding.

She could immediately see the shift in Markus as they made their way back towards town. Good to know it wasn't just her being paranoid at least. But as she got into town, an all too familiar scent reached her. Blood. A mix of supernatural, and the sweet, metallic, addictive scent of human blood. She hesitated, but Violet grabbed her wrist and pulled her further in towards it. Evelyn instinctively held her breath for fear she'd lose control.

But Markus and Violet dragged her to the site of an attack, where the smell of blood was overpowering and intoxicating. She pulled her wrist free of Violet's grip and pulled away, but Violet didn't notice, her attention on one of the injured. Two injured, one bleeding profusely, one who appeared to just have a wound to his shoulder but who seemed completely out of it, staring at his surroundings and not reacting to any of it. Witch blood wasn't as good as human blood, but it would do. She shook the thought from her head and paced back a few metres, still able to smell it despite her holding her breath. She could feel that... that monster in her, wanting to attack one of them, wanting to drain them, wanting to feel satisfied for the first time in months.

And then suddenly, a hunter who had been pinned to the ground seconds ago seemed to wiggle himself free and scramble to his feet. Having seen the powers of those gathered, he decided to run instead of taking any of them on alone. But he apparently hadn't spotted Evelyn. In a millisecond, she had him pinned to the ground, fangs a hair's breadth away from his throat. But something made her hold back. Apparently the impact of a vampire hurling herself in to you and causing your head to hit off the ground was enough to knock you clean out. Thinking on her feet, she pulled the belt from around her waist to form a makeshift set of handcuffs and tied her jacket over his head to act as a blindfold. Ideally, she would have had something to bind his legs away too, but this was the best she could do for now. And gritting her teeth, she dragged him back to the alleyway, that smell of blood still overpowering. But what else could she do? She wasn't strong enough to drag him anywhere else by himself, so this would have to do. And then she stood, hovering as far away as she dared get, holding her breath and hoping that somebody would tell her to go somewhere else, somewhere away from that sickening, addicting smell of blood.

A lot of things were happening, and all at once, it seemed, to Alex. New people were filtering in and out almost faster than he could place them. Really, he seemed more concerned by the fact that whatever glowing white substance flowing from his body was clumping together above his head, almost resembling a cloud. Whatever was going on had left him almost in a daze, and he just didn't seem to fully grasp most of what was happening. He heard Phoenix say... Something about Violet? Was he talking to Violet? Wait. Violet!

He quickly found himself saying words he never thought he would say, "Violet? Thank god!" Then he added, "Please tell me you can hear me. See me? I'm real, right?" He wasn't fully convinced that he wasn't dreaming the whole thing, "Phoenix is right. I think I might need your help." He took a short moment to think, biting his lower lip as he did so, "Clearly, the intuitive- and intelligent- thing to do is probably to stay here. And... I know that." He sighed, "But, instead, I think I have to go do something stupid." He smiled, weak and halfheartedly, "Will you help me? I figure if it goes horribly wrong, well, at least I won't be alone."

With that, he started to walk out of the alleyway, "I'm a little worried I might get lost," he explained, assuming Violet had followed him, "things are a little different on the this side, aren't they?"

He looked around the town briefly, there were occasionally building where he knew none existed, in some places there were multiple buildings sharing the same space, it was both confusing, and it made perfect sense. "There's a clearing in the woods, my Abuelo used to take me there when I was a kid," he explained, "and I feel this intense, burning need to go there." He started heading towards the woods, "I know it's not exactly safe, but..." He shrugged, "What if life, or death for that matter, without risk?" The farther from his body he went, the more he could hear a sound in the distance... Like a faint drumming. It struck him that it had always been there, it was just growing. Barely, but there it was. He thought to ask Violet if she heard it, but somehow he knew she couldn't.

Every ghost and spirit Alex crossed paths with stared at him, because they knew he wasn't quite dead. They could tell he didn't belong, and he knew it. He walked silently for a while, through the town, straight up to the entrance to the woods, then he stopped, and listened. Everything was eerily quiet here, "Is it always so quiet?"

Zada wasn't one festivals, or holidays. She wasn't sure she would ever fully understand them all, and didn't usually enjoy herself. Instead, she had elected to spend the evening in the lake. It was cold, but not frozen over yet, and she wanted to take every chance to be immersed in the water while she could. She truly felt herself, there under the water, and she knew that is where she would always feel most at peace. She surfaced once, to look at the moon, and could hear a commotion coming from the town. Yelling. Her skin prickled, despite not feeling cold, and she could feel it in the air: danger.

She sank back down, so that only her eyes and the tops of her ears were out of the water. There were hunters in the town, there had to be. She would stay in the lake. Any hunter would be a fool to approach it on purpose.

It didn't take long, however, for her to hear the rustling of them within the woods. Humans had always been terribly loud, it was a wonder they'd survived for so long. She emerged more from under the water, and began to sing. Her song had no words, just a simple melody, and she didn't have to sing very loud for it to carry to the ears of men. She didn't want it to carry too far, anyway, one or two would do just fine. More than that and she'd be in over her head. As she sang, she swam as close to the shore as she could get and still be able to swiftly swim back into the depths.

As she had hoped, a hunter walked slowly, almost as if in a trance, to the edge of the lake. He was likely more used to vampires and witches; you don't usually find mermaids this far inland. Zade almost felt sorry for him. She stopped singing for a moment and smiled seductively at the man as he started wading into the water. Before he knew what was coming, she snapped, grabbed his ankles, and pulled him under the water with her. He screamed, only audible for a moment before he went under. No one would ever hear from him again, though. She tore him apart, ate his flesh, crushed his bones. What she didn't finish, she left for the fish. If she had her way, they would feast tonight.
