Introduction

Image

Somewhere in-between dreams and reality lies a world beyond human imagination. A vast world of creatures lies nestled in those small places in the human mind that only dreams can reach. This world teeters on the brink, a mystical dream world brought to life by the pure energy of reality, the forces that push the Earth around the Sun, the forces that drag man through his daily routine, the forces that keep the beat in your heart. Here the magic of dreams has released the limits that such a powerful energy has placed on the realm of reality, and the spirits and dreams of all meander through in the most fantastic, beautiful, terrifying, gruesome, lovely, sickening, and surreal of forms.

This world maintains the balance of dreams and reality, guards emotion, holds the power of every human's spirit within its limitless skies. In order to maintain this balance and keep the worlds at peace, emotions in check, dreams and realities in their respective worlds, the creatures of the Middle World must be kept happy. Four sisters arose, each powerful in her own way, to keep the world in order. The oldest of the sisters created the Inn, and she shared with her three sisters the burden of keeping the creatures of the world happy. From the beginning of time to the end of eternity, the Inn was to stand and the sisters to be responsible for the safety of the Middle World, and thus the world of dreams and reality as well. They hired servants to work in the Inn, dutiful, diligent workers to satisfy the creatures as the sisters supervised.

But what is the Inn? Why, a giant multi-story hotel, spa, and bathhouse of course! How else would the creatures of dreams stay relaxed and happy? How else could the laws and order of the universe be preserved? The Inn sits in the middle of the vast Middle World, a shining beacon that calls the weary, wondering spirits and dreams that have manifested here in the form of tangible creatures. Workers are constantly rushing through, guests are always coming and going; the premises are like their own small city, a city that never sleeps… at least not all at the same time.

It is both a job of the utmost importance, and also a thankless job to be a worker at the Inn. This didn't used to be the case…

The oldest sister used to be more involved; she used to provide for her workers, she used to greet her guests personally. Now she has become too busy, and only her sisters handle Inn business. She is rarely seen.

The three other sisters have slowly lost their kindness as well, and the Inn slowly has become more and more like a business. Sure there's gold to be made, but surely the potential destruction of the universe outweighs incentive for profit… right?

Though to a lesser extent than the oldest sister, the other three sisters are mysterious and have become somewhat isolated from the guests and workers. Little is known about any of the sisters: where they came from, what exactly they do, or the true extent of their mystical powers...

NOTE: This RP is not meant to be cutesy, "girly", etc. The idea can come off as such, but in truth it can take any number of different tones, from light-hearted and funny, to dark and scary. It is a land of dreams; is a nightmare not a dream? And, though limited, there will be violence.

Gameplay Information:

This is an RP heavily inspired by the Hayao Miyazaki movie Spirited Away. No knowledge of the movie is required to participate, but it can help. The plot centers around children aged 8-15 that fall into the mysterious "Middle World" during a carnival. They are drawn to the Inn and end up working there for the spirits. And that's about where the forced plot ends.

What will you find in a world of living dreams? Will you escape? Will you want to?

Also, I would really like to let you guys use your own imaginations and really have a big impact on how this story goes. I'm going to be somewhat behind the scenes running the hotel, so progression of the plot is mostly up to you. I will try to push you, but if your character's goal is to get home, don't expect to just reach a point in the story where he gets the opportunity without working for it yourself. This is NOT a roleplay where one can just be "along for the ride". It is up to the character to seek out his or her goals, and I will just be determining if you are successful. Sometimes you might have to be a little naughty, break a few rules to figure out what comes next. Good luck!

The Middle World:

It is a world of creatures. There are humanoid creatures, and many of the workers are of a race that very much resembles humans, but you will be the only humans in the world. Creatures of all kinds inhabit the Middle World, as they are spawned from dreams of all kinds. Terrible or beautiful, the creatures are here. Luckily, most often the more dangerous creatures do not visit the Inn…

It is a colorful world, save for some of the darker places away from the Inn; flowers bloom, fairies flutter about in clouds of sparkling dust. The moon is bright and orange at night; the sun is shining and the warm winds blow in the day. Rain, snow, and Inn other such weather is rather rare, but even still it is always beautiful if it is near the Inn. Other areas may experience different weather and have less color, but the Inn is always lit up with multi-colored lanterns as the sun sets, and always covered in blossoms as the sun pours down from the blue sky.

General Information:

There will be violence, but limited. Your character will not be a warrior or adept at any sort of weapon at the beginning of the story.

If your character is a human, he or she knows NOTHING of the Middle World. NOTHING. You have not already been there, you have not heard of it in legends, NOTHING. The RP begins with perhaps a bit about the carnival and your entrance into the Middle World FOR THE FIRST TIME. Thank you.

There are no vampires, werewolves, or "neko" creatures or characters. Sorry, I'm not only sick of those, but I don't like them at all. And if you're a human, you aren't magical. You don't cast spells, you don't speak dolphin, you can't sense danger, etc. You are normal. Sorry.

Your character has not read anyone's character sheet. He or she cannot look at someone and instantly determine he or she was abused as a child.

As a worker, you will have set hours you must work. The rest of the time is yours to explore. I'm going to go ahead and give you the okay to explore anywhere within the Inn, but you must be willing to take the consequences of your decisions. You most likely won't die, but I can't make any promises depending on what exactly you've done or where exactly you've gone…

If you leave, you'd better make sure you're back in time for your shift, and you'd better be able to protect yourself. It can be rather dangerous off the Inn premises…

I will be playing a variety of NPC's, some of which will receive their own character sheets and some of which will not. Do not assume you are better than a character just because you have a character sheet and he/she doesn't! Sheet-less characters are characters, too! Don't think you can just take advantage of them!

This RP will require extremely "literate" players. We are weaving an entire new world out of our words here; the creatures and environments of dreams may not exist in a picture we could look up on Google. This RP will depend entirely upon your ability to create.

I am also looking for co-GM(s) if anyone is interested.

Rules:

1) The obvious, standard, no god-modding or meta-gaming rule.
2) What I say goes. Period.
3) Profanity is fine, but be realistic and don't take it too far. No, "FUCK THIS SHIT!" from an eight -year-old little girl unless that is somehow part of her character.
4) Be willing to edit your posts, character sheets, etc. to match my standards. Please do not take personal offense if I ask you to edit something.
5) This is not an RP for you to make a character and never post. I expect posts, and I expect quality. Joining this RP is making a commitment to stay active and post to the best of your abilities. I will hunt you down if you don't honor your commitment to stay active, and I will not hesitate to tell you what you are doing wrong.
6) Romance is fine, but again, be realistic. No passionate kisses between eight-year-olds, and don't violate the site's rules.
7) Bad things will happen to your character. Don't be that guy with the amazing character who somehow is not at all afraid of the multitude of creatures in this world and somehow knows all the ins and outs of the Inn and the Middle World. That guy is annoying. I will make that guy edit his posts.
8) You will be written out (probably in a gruesome manner) if you don't post enough, or tell me when you are going to be inactive if it is necessary.
9) Don't be afraid to ask me any questions; I know I can be unclear at times.
10) Have fun, stay active, and this should be really interesting and a great experience for everyone! I know when you read the rules I sound kind of strict, but really I'm very nice! I promise!

Character Skeleton*:

*It doesn't have to be a novel, as most of the character development and information should come out during the story anyway. Just need a good, basic idea.

Sexual Orientation:
History: (a long history is optional, but you must put a little something)
Family: (or whoever he/she is closest to)

Fears: (what is your character afraid of? Unless it is a debilitating fear that causes him or her to fall to the ground trembling in terror, do not only put "spiders" or something of the like. Everyone is afraid of something.)

Additional Information: (anything else you want to tell us about your character)

“You two promised to behave! And literally seconds later you start screaming and..and throwing yourself all over the place!” Sena cast angry glares at Sayo and Tomasu, who snapped his eyes open and glared right back.

"Whaddya mean?! That thing was coming right at us!" Tomasu shouted, frustrated at Sena and not a little hurt that he wasn't praised for getting them into this room safely. He looked away from her, promising himself that he wouldn't forgive her any time soon, and glanced around the room to distract himself. He muttered under his breath about how it wasn't fair, when a voice emerged from the shadows.

"Guests aren't allowed on this floor, especially not in this room." Tomasu was reminded of Sena's tone just a few moments ago and frowned as the person came into view.. but it wasn't a person at all. Tomasu's jaw dropped open and he backed away towards the girls. Not daring to take his eyes off this new creature, his hands groped around behind him in search of his companions. Trying and failing to breathe calmly, he clutched at Sena's arm, all annoyance at her forgotten.

It was the beak that Tomasu couldn't tear his eyes away from. It was so shiny and pointy, completely drawing attention away from the small eyes which were almost drowned behind it. But as Tomasu's eyes drifted downwards, he gasped audibly at the neck, putting a hand quickly over his mouth. He was almost paralysed with fear and confusion. He shook his head, trying to absorb what was in front of him. The vines were bad enough, but at least this... thing... wasn't trying to attack them. It was strange to match the voice of the creature to its body.. it was almost was though it didn't know what it wanted to be. All Tomasu could think was that it was extremely ugly.

"Go on! Get out! Kamaya has no time for the likes of you! Kamaya is very busy!" Tomasu folded his arms across his chest, as he would if his mother told him he couldn't do something. He could be extremely stubborn when it was called for, and he thought that now was the perfect time. Despite his heart still pumping loudly in his ears and his knees shaking, Tomasu remembered the instructions of the tall lady - Go inside there and find Kamaya. Demand a job from her. Do not accept 'no'. Tomasu had accepted the challenge and was not about to give up without a fight.

"We're here to see Kamaya! We want a job!" He said clearly, his voice filling the room from ceiling to floor, his outward bravery not betraying his squirming insides. Feeling Sayo and Sena's presence, he was emboldened to go on, "We won't leave until we get a job!"

Sayo gave a small gasp as Tomasu jerked Sena around by the hand, jerking them both up and into the red door. As they were spun around, Sayo's legs drug on the carpet for a moment, and she could feel Sena stumbling for balance as they were pulled roughly through the red door. Sayo tried to get her legs under her and stumbled back a few step still holding on to Sena. Just before the red door slammed shut, she caught another glimpse of the purple door. The menacing, thorny vines had extended outward, each thorn dripping a greenish, poisonous looking fluid. The flowers continued to grin a toothy grin, eager to capture the children. Sayo was immensely relieved when the door slammed shut with a resounding bang.

As they entered the room, Sena fell to her knees, causing Sayo to fall flat on her behind. She let go of Sena, using her hands to keep herself from falling backwards, and sat on yet another carpet with her legs straight ahead of her and feet toward the door. When Sena began scolding them again in an annoyed tone, Sayo's eyes darted to her Sena's face, wide with confusion. Did Sena not realize how much danger they were in? How could she act like she had not seen anything at all?

"The door was attacking us. Didn't you see it?" she said after Tomasu. When she saw Sena's attention shift to the room, she turned and looked as well, kneeling with her hands on her knees. The whole room looked like it was made from one fabric, and everything seemed to blend and complement the walls and floor. Sayo's attention immediately went to the shadows that the fire made, entranced by the faint changing scenes. Slowly, she rose to her feet, eyes studying the flickering shadows. This whole experience felt like a dream.

Abruptly, she was jerked from her reverie by the slamming of a door in the corner. It was one she had not noticed before, and she realized the door was covered in the same fabric. Tomasu's hand groped for hers and she grabbed it, giving a small squeeze. Her gaze quickly shifted to the shadowed figure as her raspy voice roughly but clearly came to them. Sayo watched, fascinated, as the firelight fell upon the figure's face. The flickering scenes seemed interrupted by her presence and parted far around her, as if not willing to touch the strange figure. Sayo forcefully wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand, leaving them faintly red and puffy.

She had the general form of an old woman, but instead of a mouth and nose, her features seemed overwhelmed with a large, black beak. Small and beady eyes blinked at them disinterestedly behind overly tiny, thick glasses. Her neck was scaly and snake like, scales dully gleaming in the light as her neck bobbed. The only normal thing about her head was a wrinkled forehead and grey hair pilled tightly into a bun, seeming to slightly straighten some of her wrinkles. Sayo's eyes quickly went past the woman's dull, boring clothing to the large talons protruding where toes should have been, producing a small clack with every step she took. Every motion seemed more bird-like than human-like.

At the mention of Kamaya's name, Sayo figured the odd bird woman must be referring to herself. This was the person they were supposed to come see! Echoing Tomasu's demands, Sayo said, "Please, Ms. Kamaya, we have to have a job. Please?" She hopped anxiously from one foot to another, closely watching Kamaya's face and those small, dark eyes.
