Introduction

Image

Somewhere in-between dreams and reality lies a world beyond human imagination. A vast world of creatures lies nestled in those small places in the human mind that only dreams can reach. This world teeters on the brink, a mystical dream world brought to life by the pure energy of reality, the forces that push the Earth around the Sun, the forces that drag man through his daily routine, the forces that keep the beat in your heart. Here the magic of dreams has released the limits that such a powerful energy has placed on the realm of reality, and the spirits and dreams of all meander through in the most fantastic, beautiful, terrifying, gruesome, lovely, sickening, and surreal of forms.

This world maintains the balance of dreams and reality, guards emotion, holds the power of every human's spirit within its limitless skies. In order to maintain this balance and keep the worlds at peace, emotions in check, dreams and realities in their respective worlds, the creatures of the Middle World must be kept happy. Four sisters arose, each powerful in her own way, to keep the world in order. The oldest of the sisters created the Inn, and she shared with her three sisters the burden of keeping the creatures of the world happy. From the beginning of time to the end of eternity, the Inn was to stand and the sisters to be responsible for the safety of the Middle World, and thus the world of dreams and reality as well. They hired servants to work in the Inn, dutiful, diligent workers to satisfy the creatures as the sisters supervised.

But what is the Inn? Why, a giant multi-story hotel, spa, and bathhouse of course! How else would the creatures of dreams stay relaxed and happy? How else could the laws and order of the universe be preserved? The Inn sits in the middle of the vast Middle World, a shining beacon that calls the weary, wondering spirits and dreams that have manifested here in the form of tangible creatures. Workers are constantly rushing through, guests are always coming and going; the premises are like their own small city, a city that never sleeps… at least not all at the same time.

It is both a job of the utmost importance, and also a thankless job to be a worker at the Inn. This didn't used to be the case…

The oldest sister used to be more involved; she used to provide for her workers, she used to greet her guests personally. Now she has become too busy, and only her sisters handle Inn business. She is rarely seen.

The three other sisters have slowly lost their kindness as well, and the Inn slowly has become more and more like a business. Sure there's gold to be made, but surely the potential destruction of the universe outweighs incentive for profit… right?

Though to a lesser extent than the oldest sister, the other three sisters are mysterious and have become somewhat isolated from the guests and workers. Little is known about any of the sisters: where they came from, what exactly they do, or the true extent of their mystical powers...

NOTE: This RP is not meant to be cutesy, "girly", etc. The idea can come off as such, but in truth it can take any number of different tones, from light-hearted and funny, to dark and scary. It is a land of dreams; is a nightmare not a dream? And, though limited, there will be violence.

Gameplay Information:

This is an RP heavily inspired by the Hayao Miyazaki movie Spirited Away. No knowledge of the movie is required to participate, but it can help. The plot centers around children aged 8-15 that fall into the mysterious "Middle World" during a carnival. They are drawn to the Inn and end up working there for the spirits. And that's about where the forced plot ends.

What will you find in a world of living dreams? Will you escape? Will you want to?

Also, I would really like to let you guys use your own imaginations and really have a big impact on how this story goes. I'm going to be somewhat behind the scenes running the hotel, so progression of the plot is mostly up to you. I will try to push you, but if your character's goal is to get home, don't expect to just reach a point in the story where he gets the opportunity without working for it yourself. This is NOT a roleplay where one can just be "along for the ride". It is up to the character to seek out his or her goals, and I will just be determining if you are successful. Sometimes you might have to be a little naughty, break a few rules to figure out what comes next. Good luck!

The Middle World:

It is a world of creatures. There are humanoid creatures, and many of the workers are of a race that very much resembles humans, but you will be the only humans in the world. Creatures of all kinds inhabit the Middle World, as they are spawned from dreams of all kinds. Terrible or beautiful, the creatures are here. Luckily, most often the more dangerous creatures do not visit the Inn…

It is a colorful world, save for some of the darker places away from the Inn; flowers bloom, fairies flutter about in clouds of sparkling dust. The moon is bright and orange at night; the sun is shining and the warm winds blow in the day. Rain, snow, and Inn other such weather is rather rare, but even still it is always beautiful if it is near the Inn. Other areas may experience different weather and have less color, but the Inn is always lit up with multi-colored lanterns as the sun sets, and always covered in blossoms as the sun pours down from the blue sky.

General Information:

There will be violence, but limited. Your character will not be a warrior or adept at any sort of weapon at the beginning of the story.

If your character is a human, he or she knows NOTHING of the Middle World. NOTHING. You have not already been there, you have not heard of it in legends, NOTHING. The RP begins with perhaps a bit about the carnival and your entrance into the Middle World FOR THE FIRST TIME. Thank you.

There are no vampires, werewolves, or "neko" creatures or characters. Sorry, I'm not only sick of those, but I don't like them at all. And if you're a human, you aren't magical. You don't cast spells, you don't speak dolphin, you can't sense danger, etc. You are normal. Sorry.

Your character has not read anyone's character sheet. He or she cannot look at someone and instantly determine he or she was abused as a child.

As a worker, you will have set hours you must work. The rest of the time is yours to explore. I'm going to go ahead and give you the okay to explore anywhere within the Inn, but you must be willing to take the consequences of your decisions. You most likely won't die, but I can't make any promises depending on what exactly you've done or where exactly you've gone…

If you leave, you'd better make sure you're back in time for your shift, and you'd better be able to protect yourself. It can be rather dangerous off the Inn premises…

I will be playing a variety of NPC's, some of which will receive their own character sheets and some of which will not. Do not assume you are better than a character just because you have a character sheet and he/she doesn't! Sheet-less characters are characters, too! Don't think you can just take advantage of them!

This RP will require extremely "literate" players. We are weaving an entire new world out of our words here; the creatures and environments of dreams may not exist in a picture we could look up on Google. This RP will depend entirely upon your ability to create.

I am also looking for co-GM(s) if anyone is interested.

Rules:

1) The obvious, standard, no god-modding or meta-gaming rule.
2) What I say goes. Period.
3) Profanity is fine, but be realistic and don't take it too far. No, "FUCK THIS SHIT!" from an eight -year-old little girl unless that is somehow part of her character.
4) Be willing to edit your posts, character sheets, etc. to match my standards. Please do not take personal offense if I ask you to edit something.
5) This is not an RP for you to make a character and never post. I expect posts, and I expect quality. Joining this RP is making a commitment to stay active and post to the best of your abilities. I will hunt you down if you don't honor your commitment to stay active, and I will not hesitate to tell you what you are doing wrong.
6) Romance is fine, but again, be realistic. No passionate kisses between eight-year-olds, and don't violate the site's rules.
7) Bad things will happen to your character. Don't be that guy with the amazing character who somehow is not at all afraid of the multitude of creatures in this world and somehow knows all the ins and outs of the Inn and the Middle World. That guy is annoying. I will make that guy edit his posts.
8) You will be written out (probably in a gruesome manner) if you don't post enough, or tell me when you are going to be inactive if it is necessary.
9) Don't be afraid to ask me any questions; I know I can be unclear at times.
10) Have fun, stay active, and this should be really interesting and a great experience for everyone! I know when you read the rules I sound kind of strict, but really I'm very nice! I promise!

Character Skeleton*:

*It doesn't have to be a novel, as most of the character development and information should come out during the story anyway. Just need a good, basic idea.

Prologue

It is said there are times when the realms of dreams and reality overlap.

The carnival was intoxicating. The scent of candy, fun, and sweat. The taste of the air. The blaring sound of rides clanging, people laughing, screams of excitement and terror all mixed together like the cotton candy spinning in its machine. The lights: blinking, neon and bright in an unnatural way- colors that aren't supposed to exist. The world loses all order; in this twisted, beautiful fair chaos reigns supreme and the dreams begin to flutter out of the mind and manifest into something more. Neither dream nor reality, the thoughts and feelings swirl and gather...

It is said there are times when the realms of dreams and reality overlap.

In the excitement of the carnival, the portal to the Middle World, the world of secrets, the world of impossibilities, flickers open ever so briefly...

Colour everywhere was the first thing that met Tomasu's eyes as he turned the corner on his bike. They screamed at him with vibrant yellows, deep purples, silky blues, seductive reds, playful greens and other shades that he couldn't even put a name too. Mouth slightly open in wonder, eyes drinking it all in, the little eight year-old boy hopped off his bike without taking his eyes off the carnival for a second. And then he grinned that mischievous grin.

Sound came next. Squeals of delight, and some of terror. Excited chatter as people rushed by in faceless blurs, holding hands and hugging each other, others jumping and running around in delight. There was enticing music coming from each ride, triumphant blares as someone won a game, carnival men shouting encouragements to people walking by to "Ride this one and I'll bet ya you won't want to ride it again after! It'll make ya stomach churn, this one's a monster!" then laughing wholeheartedly as friends dared each other to take the challenge.

"AKIII!" Tomasu called his friend without looking around, his mouth still hanging open. "Come OOON!" He knew Aki was a slower rider but she couldn't be too far away. Tomasu still didn't want to tear his eyes away and grinned when he could finally hear his friend panting behind him.
"Oh...wow.." She exclaimed as she clambered off her bike and stood next to Tomasu. Her eyes were feasting on the huge Ferris wheel, all the carriages lit up a different colour, going up and up until she strained her neck to see how high it went. "Let's go on THAT one." She said, nudging Tomasu and pointing at the wheel. He looked up as well, unable to see the highest point either. Without another word, they both got back on their bikes and sped along to join the queue at the wheel.

"What about our bikes? Think we can take them on the ride?" Tomasu asked as he looked around the people in front of him to see how long they would have to wait.

"Um, do you think we can go on the ride? Look... there's a height thing.. Think we're tall enough?" Tomasu glanced at the chart that Aki had nodded at and shrugged. He grabbed Aki's sleeve to indicate that she should follow him as he moved through the gaps of the queue, still pushing his bike alongside him. It wasn't that he knew he could take advantage of his age and that the tall adults around him would let him by with a chuckle; he simply wasn't used to playing 'by the rules' and anyway, queues were boring. As they reached the front, a hand that seemed as though it was the same size as Tomasu's bike's wheel stopped them before they could clamber aboard the next carriage.

"No bikes, kids. Give 'em to your mum, alright?" The giant said, then frowned as he looked down at them. He had a sea captain's hat and jacket on, and his face sported a scruffy, black beard. "And did you check your height at the chart? How old are you anyway?"

"Yes!" Tomasu said defiantly, not bothering to answer the second question. "And my mum's already up there so she can't take my bike. C'mon, it's small, I can fit it in there!" Tomasu's mother was, in fact, at home listening to the radio and fixing a hole in one of his shorts. She also believed that her son was fast asleep in his bed. Aki's mother was currently on the phone, desperately calling around to see if anyone knew where her daughter was; she had not yet been told by Tomasu's mother of his tendency to sneak out so she had not thought to call there first.

"If you don't think we're tall enough, go get the chart, we'll show you." Tomasu said, his eyes flashing in the brightness of the Ferris wheel.

The giant blinked slowly as he towered above them, then nodded and wandered down the queue to get the chart. Without skipping a beat, Tomasu raced towards the carriage that was already slowly making its way back up the wheel. "Aki, let's go!" He shouted behind him as he threw his bike into the open door and moved out the way to let his friend in. They both stood there laughing as they watched the giant's head turn up and, blinking slowly again, cross his arms as they floated slowly upwards, up towards the cloudy sky, up until the people below looked like ants and air was so fresh that it filled their whole lungs, up until they thought they couldn't possibly get any higher...

The blonde girl gazed at the ground timidly. Her cheeks were rosy red all the way up to her ears and she held her mother's hand but her sleeves were so long that they covered her hands, making it seemed like she was younger. Her mother cast about for a moment before glancing down to the little girl, tugging her along crooning soothing sounds. "Come on. It's okay Koume."

The little girl wrung her other hands in front of her and slowly made her way forward. They duo proceeded for a while like that before a man approached with a wide grin. “Mariko. There you are, how is she?” The man referred to the girl and the woman, Mariko chuckled. “She’s stopped crying. I think this is just a bit much for her. Jean? What’s that?” Mariko squinted at the plushy in his hand.

Jean squatted and held out the soft, fuzzy blue doll to the girl, Koume. She raised her gaze warily then let out a sharp gasp. “Dad!” She reached for the doll and cradled towards her chest as she smiled. Some of the uneasiness faded away visibly and the girl held out the doll to scan it over. It was a bunny with long floppy ears, and sharp eyes. Koume’s smile brightened even more and she held the doll up to her mother. “Here!” Mariko took the doll and smiled gently. “What?” Mariko asked as if in surprise. Koume waved her arms, making the sleeves go every which way. “You can have it. You looked worried, mommy.” Koume remarked. Mariko nodded and laid a hand on Koume’s shoulder. “Thank you, Koume.”

The family then moved on, Koume prancing in front but never going to far before glancing back nervously. They went to the different rides, which Koume could get on. All the lights, scents, and sights overwhelmed her. It was as if she were in some sort of fantasy world where the people could play forever. Eventually they stopped for funnel cake. Koume laughed when the white powder got on her cheeks. She had never had friends to go to places like this. All she had ever been to was picnic. Her parents stopped at a game booth and she stood off from them reluctantly. The Ferris wheel drew her attention, towering over the entire carnival like a beacon. Her brown gaze followed the pods around one cycle before a thought occurred to her. What if she could stay forever? In this place where you could forget your worries.

She bounced back over to her parents and tugged on the tip of her mother’s blouse. “Not now sweetie. Hold on. I’m about to win!” Mariko exclaimed proudly. Koume watched for a moment before wandering back to where she could see the Ferris wheel. Somehow, she wanted to ride it to the top and then scream at the top of her lungs. She chuckled; it was just like a kid. She glanced back at her parents before shrugging and giving up on the idea for the moment because the laughter from a large group of kids caught her attention. She watched them joke around, pushing each other to get to the next ride. A sharp pang ran through her and she skipped over to where her mother was whooping for glory. “Mom. I want to go on the Ferris wheel.” Koume tugged on her shirt again and the woman quieted regaining her breath with a laugh. “Oh, sorry. We’ll go now. C’mon Jean. Koume wants to ride the Ferris wheel”…

Koume grinned. There was one piece left to complete the fantasy

Sena vigorously pushed her way through the barrier of ecstatic individuals, drunk with the excitement that carnivals were famous for bringing. She rushed through with a large, stuffed teddy bear clutched tightly to her chest, keeping her eyes peeled for a place to hide. Behind her she could hear the desperate yet faint cries of the word "Thief!" It was a good, but foolish try to even think that even one person in this adrenaline-pumped crowd would break out of their delightful trance and chase after her.

The Orphanage offered a meager amount of toys, almost none at all. In the 6 years that she had lived there, she had never once gotten a doll of any sort. Sena was aware of the hungry stares her sister always adopted whenever she spotted other children with dolls swinging carelessly from their hands.

Sena would always say "Do you want one?", her sister would reply "No...", and Sena would respond with "I know you do."

Sena really would have preferred not to steal, but seeing as she had no money, and would never have such a heaven-brought chance like this again, she had no choice. Oh, one more thing, she wasn't supposed to be out. Sure, she felt a pang at having deceived even her own sibling just to sneak out, but it would make her sister happy in the end...wouldn't it?

She slowed her pace down to a jog, running her hands through her hair. Even with her green tank top and jean shorts, she was still drenched with sweat. She wondered how all these crazed people could even stand to stay in the sweltering heat for so long. Spotting a red-and-white striped tent that practically seemed to be shouting "THE CIRCUS!", she made her way to the "Performers Only" entrance. Lifting the flap, she casually made her way in. She could hear the elated cries of the crowd, murmuring "ooh"'s and "ahh"'s in unison. The darkness enveloped her, as her heart beat slowly went back down to it's normal pace. Suddenly, everything went silent. Sena blinked in confusion as she lifted the flap to see what was happening.

A blinding light filled the tent........

It felt more like flying than falling. There was such a gentle breeze, it tickled his cheeks as he slowly descended down through the clouds until he reached simple pastel-blue sky. He wasn't entirely sure how long he was there, feeling as light as a feather, as though he were simply floating on water. Slowly turning his head to the right, he saw with a smile that his bike was falling alongside him too. And all of a sudden, with a jolt in his stomach, the image threw him back to reality. Why is my bike falling..? Why am I falling?!

Tomasu screamed as he felt his body's weight dragging him back to the earth, no longer as light as a feather, but as heavy as a truck or an elephant, or even a house. He was falling faster than his bike, tumbling through the air, catching glances of the ground below. A building was looming and he prayed he wouldn't be slammed into it. "HEEEELP!" He screamed, his mind too full of fear to recognise that he would not find help here, in the middle of the sky. Despite the wind bashing into him, tears were still leaking from Tomasu's eyes and being swept away in an instant. The ground was so close and the little boy realised he wouldn't hit the building; despite everything, he felt a tiny piece of relief at that fact. With a soft FLUMP!, he landed head first into the prickliest bush he had ever seen, or rather, felt.

But he was alive. It seemed like a miracle, like magic, but he stood up and patted himself down with his hands. Nothing's missing. Nothing's broken... I made it! Tomasu climbed out of the bush that had saved his life with deep scratches in his arms and legs exposed by his shorts, but he was used to those at home and they didn't bother him. In fact, the minor injuries were the least of his worries. Just as he stepped out of the bush, his bike landed in it with another soft FLUMP! But Tomasu didn't move to retrieve it. Shock was beginning to take over. He looked up at the sky, blinking in the sunlight.

"Aki?" He called out tentatively. "Momma?" He said more softly, as though not expecting a reply. Before he could help it, more tears were leaking out of his eyes. He rushed back into the bush and grabbed a hold of his bike, as though it were alive and stopped him from being all alone in this strange place. There was no one around, no one to ask for help. Just a few yards away was the entrance to the building, which Tomasu had initially not taken interest in, as though he were fearful to even look at it. Once he did, however, he could not look away. Like the Ferris wheel, it disappeared into the clouds before he could tell how high it went. He took a few more steps towards it, pushing his bike alongside with him. Tomasu knew by instinct that this was not a dream - dreams had dinosaurs and adventures in them, while this building filled him with fear. "Maybe it's just another adventure..." He said to himself, suddenly feeling very small and insignificant.

Sayo bounced excitedly in the middle back seat of the car, eliciting stares and jabs from her older brothers. Easily ignoring them, Sayo whined, "Are we close yet?" To which her dad responded, "If you ask again, I will kick you out of the car and make you walk there." The irritation in his voice was plain, but there was also a note of teasing. Sayo said nothing, continuing her bouncing and looking excitedly out the windows for a glimpse of the carnival. A moment later, the tall, colorful shape of a Ferris wheel rose into view. Sayo could just barely make out the figures of people high above. A squeal of delight rose on her lips. This was only her second time at the fair. The first time she had been too small to ride anything, but this time her mother assured her she would be able to ride several of the rides, maybe even the teacups!

As the car slowly slid into a parking spot and ground to a stop, Sayo immediately leapt out of the car after Kori, hopping excitedly while impatiently waiting for her parents to get out of the car. A swing ride started up, the happy squeals and laughs of children reaching her ears, and she began to dash off toward it. Her mother quickly grabbed her arm, then her hand, gently swinging it as they walked. Sayo smiled brightly up at her mother before beginning to pull and urging her to go faster, frustrated by the sedated pace.

Eventually, as they entered the garishly painted gate and paid the entrance fee, Sayo was amazed at the amount of color, noise, and people that surrounded them. Everywhere Sayo looked, there was something interesting to see. After riding a few rides, some two or three times, the family stopped to eat. Most of the family was tired, but Sayo was still bursting with energy. As soon as her mother reached in her purse to pull out the money, releasing the girl's hand, a small flash of light from a coin glinting in the sun caught her eye. She dashed away, the cries of her mother falling unheeded on her small ears, her gold hair bouncing as she ran. She wove her way between the cords of the tents, her eye fixed on the coin. Suddenly she tripped.

Closing her eyes, Sayo expected to feel the hard earth knock the breath out of her. Instead, as she opened her eyes again a moment later, a large puddle of water was beneath her. She was on the edge, balancing on the toes of one foot before losing her balance and falling forward. She flopped in with a screech and a small splash, immediately sitting up and coughing out the muddy water. She ran a hand over her tongue to get rid of some of the dirt with a loud, "Bleech!"

Sayo looked around in confusion, standing and sloshing out of the puddle. This wasn't the fair at all. It was still bright and sunny, only a few clouds dotting the pale blue sky, but something seemed off. Maybe it was the bright, almost neon pebbles sporadically flung over the dirt path beside her, the way the clouds looked cartoon like with definite shapes. She didn't even have to use her imagination to say that one looked like a stallion, mane flying in the wind, and that one looked like a large dragon, wings spread wide. The trees seemed vividly green and conspicuously brown. Cicadas and crickets chirped everywhere, and the sun, at least to Sayo's eyes, seemed happy enough to smile.

As she observed her surroundings with total fascination, the realization that she had no idea where she was slowly began to sink in, making her increasingly nervous as she stood shakily by the road. Tears welled up in her eyes as she uncertainly yelled out, "Hello?" She saw a large building to her left, just down the road. With nowhere else to go, tears now streaming freely down her face, she walked uncertainly toward the massive building. Every few minutes, she called out, wanting someone, anyone, to answer. The lgiant structure drew her like a moth to a light, and soon even her crying halted as she stared in wonder.

A small movement caught her eye, and she noticed a boy standing near the entrance with a bike. She immediately began running toward him, her arms waving to catch his attention. "Hey, you! I'm lost, can you help me?" A moment later, she arrived a few feet away from him. "Where are we? Can you help me? I don't know where my mom is! What is this place?" The words flew out of her mouth, abruptly stopping as she waited for him to answer.

…Something cool was tickling her ankles...it was peculiarly similar to grass….GRASS!? Sena’s eye’s flickered open in alarm, as she let out a gasp. She was immediately overwhelmed by the sight of a massive building that resembled a temple of some sort. A countless amount of lanterns embraced it, unlit yet still enticing. The building was painted a vermilion color, the paint cracked and peeling.

There were numerous balconies, with sliding doors that were made of paper. They also looked as worn as the building’s outer walls. It gave you the impression that it had been long abandoned; yet thick black smoke was rising steadily in the sky, an obvious statement that it was still occupied. An arched wooden bridge established a pathway to the building, its railings painted a dark shade of red. Despite its worn look it was magnetic, giving off an illusion that it was gently coaxing you to enter. Sena took a step forward, her eyes glued to the building...

“Where are we? Can you help me? I don’t know where my mom is! What is this place?”

The light, youthful voice cut sharply through the air, snapping Sena out of her trance. She turned around, realizing she wasn’t alone. She spotted two young children, one a girl and the other a boy. The girl had bright, almost radiant skin, and blonde hair. The boy had strong, rebellious looking eyes and disheveled brown hair. Though they appeared to be complete polar opposites, she decided against making any quick assumptions. After all, they could be best friends for all she knew. She walked cautiously towards them, raising a hand in the air. “Hello?” she questioned nervously.

Tomasu spun around, quickly swiping away the tears that had been silently streaming down his face. A little girl, around his age, was racing towards him asking him a multitude of questions. He could have hugged her as the relief of not being alone flooded through him. Despite being in this surreal land, Tomasu couldn't help but grin. All of a sudden, this didn't seem so bad - he had someone with him. Maybe this could be an adventure!

"I just got here! I was at this carnival with my friend and then we were on the Ferris wheel and then I was falling and my bike was falling and I was here!" He said excitedly all in one breath. His hands relaxed their grip on his bike handles and he lay it down on the ground. He closed the distance between himself and the girl, as though being closer to her would make him feel even less alone. The small amount of time Tomasu had spent watching the building, wondering what to do, had almost paralysed him with fear. He had felt abandoned, yet a calmness swept through him as though he could feel the warmth of the girl running through him now. He pointed up at the strange temple and was about to suggest exploring it when he heard a small "Hello?" Whipping his head around again, Tomasu watched another girl wander towards them. Aren't there any boys here?! He thought, inwardly rolling his eyes.

Unlike the round-faced girl next to him, this girl seemed much older and in any case, was taller than Tomasu. He eyed up the teddy bear swinging from her arm and wondered out loud, "Did you come from the carnival too?" He waved at her to come closer, "We wanna go in there, do you know where we are?" Then he grinned again, he couldn't help it. The breeze was warm and the sun was blazing down on the trio as they stood in a little circle. He could feel the spirit of an adventure coursing through his veins and, come what may, he had at least the girls to help him on the path back home... Once they'd finished exploring, of course. "What's your names? I'm Tomasu."

Sayo was pleased when the boy turned, beginning to speak to her. In a place like this, she was relieved that he didn't simply disappear through a wall, or something like that. The relief on his face was plain, but Sayo's own face fell slightly when he told her he just got her as well. It seemed she was not the only one that fell into this strange place. She looked around uncertainly once more, her eyes inevitably drawn again to the building in front of her. The boy let go of his bike before coming closer. He pointed back at the colorful building and she looked back up at the massive structure. It seemed to touch the sky.

Suddenly, another voice came from behind them. Sayo immediately whirled around, new hope surging through her at the thought of someone who could maybe help them get home. It was an older, dark haired girl. In her hand was a rabbit, and Sayo eyed it curiously. She seemed cautious, walking slowly toward them. Sayo hoped she knew where they were, and could help them get home, or at least back to the fair. When the boy beside her wondered out loud if she come from the carnival too, Sayo scowled briefly at him. If she also came from the fair, she probably wouldn't be able to help them either. Her face still pouting, she said, "I'm Sayo. What if I don't want to go in there?" There was a note of whining in her voice, and she knew that going in the building was definitely what she wanted to do. She just did not want to be ordered around by this boy. She didn't even know him!

Her eyes widened in surprise. "They came from the carnival as well?" she thought to herself.
"I don't get it..." She turned her attention back to the boy who she now identified as "Tomasu". She nodded her head. "What were little kids like you doing at the carnival all alone?" she asked. Seeing as both children's parents weren't here, she suspected they weren't with them at the carnival as well. "It's dangerous to be by yourself In someplace like that, you know. No matter how much of an adventure it may seem..."

"In our case whether we like it or not, it looks like we'll have to take on this particular adventure" She walked up to the bridge, running her hands over the chipped railings. She smiled at the pouting girl. “Even If this place isn’t safe, we have nowhere else to go, do we? Or anywhere to sleep when night falls. I'd like to sleep in a proper bed, wouldn't you?” She stuck her hand in the pocket of her shorts, groping around for a piece of candy she could give them. She found two, and held them out victoriously. "Here, have some candy. You've always gotta have candy for an adventure!" she said, putting them down on the bridge.

To her own surprise, she was actually taking this in quite well. In a situation like this, she figured that a person would be feeling much more worried than how she felt right now. Sena glanced back at the two children. “Well, let’s get going shall we?” She crossed the bridge, setting the teddy bear down at the entrance. Raising her fist to the door, she grinned back at them. “I’m knocking on the door in One…Two…”

"What if I don't want to go in there?" Sayo wasn't looking at Tomasu in the most friendly way. If she were a friend, he would have punched her lightly on the arm and dragged her into the building. He wasn't exactly used to people disagreeing with him... or if they did, he'd bully them into doing what he wanted anyway. It was somewhat surprising that Tomasu was a popular boy in his class. This was most likely due to his sense of adventure and the fact that he wouldn't let anyone put him down or make him feel like he wasn't good enough. He enjoyed having friends around him, life was always more fun that way.

"What were little kids like you doing at the carnival all alone?" Sena was looking from Sayo to Tomasu. He grinned that mischievous grin and said in a very matter-of-fact way, "My momma thought I would try to run away from her if she took me... So I snuck out my room and went with my friend Aki... but she's not here. I guess she got stuck back at the carnival." Any normal child would have thought that he was the stuck one, but Tomasu was only enjoying this place the longer they were here. He was itching to get into the building and started hopping excitedly from one foot to the other when Sena suggested that going in there was their only option.

"Here, have some candy. You've always gotta have candy for an adventure!" Sena placed it down on the bridge and, all of a sudden, Tomasu was suspicious. He might enjoy adventures but taking candy from a stranger was a no-no. On the other hand, Sena wasn't an adult and she didn't look very harmful. He shuffled towards her, frowning as though he were approaching a dangerous creature who might turn on him at any moment. He picked up his piece and looked at it carefully.

"Hey! I know these!" He squealed, delighted, and unwrapped the little piece before gobbling it down. "Thanks! Hey, try this, Sayo!" He left the other piece there for her but skipped back to the entrance to this magnificent place, reaching beyond the heavens it seemed to him as he craned his neck to look up at it. All thoughts of being suspicious of Sena had rushed out his head.

Tomasu stuck his tongue out at Sayo then went to pick his bike up before following Sena back to the door. He wasn't sure why she was leaving the teddy bear outside... He thought it might get lonely but had his own hands full with his bike.

“I’m knocking on the door in One…Two…” The knocker was a beautifully ornate object in a rusty gold. At first, Tomasu thought it was a lion's head but as he looked more closely, it seemed to shift its shape. He stepped closer but before he could take another look, the large door opened with a creak. Tomasu pushed his bike in past Sena and Sayo, gasping as his eyes took in the exquisite staircase, which led up and off in two opposite directions. The banisters were a dark wood and carved with intricate details that he couldn't see from this distance. The expanse of the floor was so large, Tomasu was eager to hop back on his bike and ride around in a circle. He wished he had someone to race with.

"What are you?" A boom of a voice echoed around the hallway but Tomasu couldn't tell where from. He backed away, a little fearful, regrouping with the girls. His brown eyes glanced in every direction, trying to fathom where the voice had come from.

"Where is he?" He whispered to Sena, grabbing her hand, his red bike left abandoned a few feet in front of him.

“My momma thought I would try to run away from her if she took me…So I snuck out of my room and went with my friend Aki… but she’s not here. I guess she got stuck back that the carnival” Tomasu said, a wide grin on his face. Sena frowned slightly, she didn’t approve of him disobeying his mother, though she wasn’t exactly in the best position to correct him. Afterall, she had also snuck out as well.

“Here have some candy. You’ve always gotta have candy for an adventure!” she said, placing the candy down on the bridge. But the moment she put the candy down she had feared that she had made a mistake, though she took care not to show it. What if they took it the wrong way? She had offered it to them out of goodwill, but that wouldn’t strip her of her “mysterious and possibly untrustworthy girl” position. She felt her body tense as she examined Tomasu as he studied the candy carefully.

“Hey! I know these!” he announced delightfully, as Sayo followed behind him with a bright smile on her face. Sena relaxed, smiling to herself as she watched the two children take the candy. She made her way across the bridge, putting the Teddy bear down at the door. “I’m knocking on the door in One…Two..” she began, glancing back to see that Sayo and Tomasu were making their way over. She grabbed the peculiar knocker that she could see was ruined by the rain, for it was covered by a heavy coat of rust. She thought the knocker to be peculiar because no matter how hard she stared at it, it appeared to keep changing shape…But never mind that, it wasn’t a big deal anyway.

She watched as Tomasu took a step forward, when the doors suddenly burst open. She poked her head in, expecting to see someone there. Though she found no one, she did get a chance to get a decent look at the inside. It looked much, much bigger than it had from the outside – and even then it was huge. The floor was almost empty, other than two enormous staircases that glided down from opposite ends. From its outer appearance, Sena knew that there would probably be many more than just two floors. The building was at least five stories high --- no, more than that even.

“What are you?” a loud female ( or is it male ) voice demanded, filling the room. Sena jumped, goosebumps appearing on her arms and legs. She saw that Sayo had been startled as well. “Where is he?” Tomasu questioned, grabbing her hand. “I…I don’t know…” Sena answered, knitting her eyebrows together. Squeezing his hand she carefully walked inside, standing next to the bike that Tomasu had left in near the middle of the room. “We don’t know how we got here. We need a place to stay!” Sena called out, cupping an unoccupied hand to her mouth so that the owner of the mysterious voice could hear her. ( Do we let Queen do the talking here? Or are we supposed to narrate the voice ourselves? )

( Edited it a bit. -- Hope you guys don't mind that I repeated a lot of the stuff! I thought It would make more sense that way. )

Sayo's pout only increased when Sena assumed that she had been at the carnival alone and had the nerve to scold her for it. She defensively crossed her arms over her chest, irritated even more that the girl hadn't even introduced herself before acting like an adult know-it-all. "I was not alone, my mom and dad and brothers were there too, so don't act like you're my mom or something! And don't call me a little kid either, you're not that much older than me." Altogether, she wasn't too surprised that Sena was right about Tomasu.

When Sena smiled at her, Sayo's pout lessened a bit and she began feeling guilty for acting like a brat. Not that she would have admitted it. "I guess I don't wanna sleep outside," she admitted shyly. A quick glance at their strange surroundings caused the young girl to shiver slightly. She looked back at Sena curiously while the older girl dug around in her pocket for something. When she pulled out some candy, the pout on Sayo's face instantly disappeared, replaced with a happy smile. As she set the candy on the bridge, Sayo's smile faded into a look of pure curiosity. Why didn't she just hand it to them? Her pondering was interrupted by Tomasu's delight, and she grabbed the candy as well, studying it for a moment before putting it in her pocket for later.

Tomasu stuck his tongue out at her and she stuck her tongue out right back, leaning forward slightly. She then hurried off after Sena, not wanting to be left behind. She stood hesitantly behind Sena gazing open mouthed at the large red door. The paint was cracked, worn, and faded, but it was still an impressive sight. Grey wooden studs made three vertical, even lines on each door. After craning her neck up once more, she found her view blocked by one of the overhanging balconies, supported by old, flimsy looking grey supports.

Sayo jumped back, her head snapping back down when the door opened before they knocked. It opened seemingly by itself, exposing a vast open room. The floor was made up of thin strips of bamboo, each strip so close to the next, you could barely see the seem. It was immaculately clean and seemed recently polished. Directly across the room was a large, dark staircase. Sayo took only a moment to take all this in, Tomasu pushing past them with his bike, before she rushed forward and peeked around the door, bewildered when there was no one there.

A loud voice startled her, her head jerking up to locate the source of the voice. Again seeing no one, she backed up next to the other two. This was starting to seem like some sort of fairy tale. She looked back out the door and wondered if that wasn't safer after all.

Tomasu was extremely glad for his company, as their eyes explored the mass expanse of the hall. He shivered slightly, not exactly fearful of the voice, but feeling uneasy that this person had not shown themselves. As he glanced back at the staircase, he noticed the patterns he had spotted earlier were shifting, just like the knocker outside. It made his head feel dizzy looking at it.

“We don’t know how we got here. We need a place to stay!” Sena called out. Tomasu felt the warmth of her fingers spread through his and keep the fear at bay. He reached the Sayo's hand and grabbed it, as though he could pass on the feeling. It was almost by instinct, as though he felt they would all be separated if they weren't physically touching. A strong breeze was blowing in from the door behind them that scared Tomasu more than the voice. It wants to keep us apart... His young mind thought illogically, as though a wind would be able to do such a thing.

"HEYYY! Why don't you show your face, huh?" Tomasu shouted out, but even as he did, the wind was getting stronger and almost drowned his voice out. He wanted to go close the door but was afraid of letting go of the girls' hands. Instead, he urged the girls closer to the staircase, abandoning his bike for the meanwhile. "Let's go up and look for him," He told the girls, pulling them along despite their resistance.

"You have entered this sacred place without any invitation." The voice boomed once more, but was very slightly softer, as though this was a fact that they must face. It sounded ominous to Tomasu's ears and he stopped trying to climb the stairs. For once, he was unsure what to do. This wasn't feeling like an adventure anymore.

"Take not one more step!" the voice boomed out at three children once again. "You dare taint these hallowed grounds with your presence? You dare enter the home of spirits?" The voice crescendoed as the accusatory questions continued, until it became an almost deafening roar in their ears. "YOU DARE TO DEFY THE VERY BALANCE AND ORDER OF NATURE AND EXISTENCE ITSELF? THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS SHALL BE MOST DIRE! YOU SHALL-"

"Kikiri, please! Would you stop scaring the guests like that?" The voice of a young woman rang out most melodically, cutting off the sonorous speech of the invisible speaker, her light, high-pitched tone contrasting sharply with the deep, powerful one. "I have asked you a thousand times, to please let me greet all guests and simply alert me of their presence without talking to them." The body of the feminine voice appeared, bustling toward the children with quick little clacks as her heels hit the bamboo floors. The woman stood a good deal higher than them of course, but it was clear that she was quite tall by anyone's standards. Her hips swung unnaturally as though she had been practicing walking this way, but even from under her maid uniform they stood out clearly. The black against the frilly white lace and her soft pale skin gave her a bold, strong appearance, as did her full, bright red lips and flowing, dark, gently curled brown hair. She had air of confidence and strength, but a forced, tired smile as she approached the children, simultaneously holding out a finger as a perch to a small orange bird.

The bird took in a breath, the red plumage on its belly puffing out, then sighed. "You never let me have fun, Madeleine." It was softer, but the voice from before had surely come from the tiny creature.

"Alright," the woman continued, ignoring the bird on her finger. She pulled a feather duster from her side and removed part of the handle with her teeth to reveal a pen. She then pulled out a pad and looked down to the children. "So what kind of spirits are you? What floor would you like? Are you all together or separate?" She rattled off questions faster than the children could answer, writing things down as she went along. "And your names? How many rooms will you require? Are you elementals? Which plane are you from? What kind of spirits did you say you were again?" She stopped and stared down at them expectantly.

Sena gaped unattractively at the strange woman, her mouth wide open. She had to strain her neck just to see her face, and she suspected that Sayo and Tomasu probably had it far worse. The woman's attire gave Sena the impression that they were in a cosplay-cafe of some sort; she had read about them in magazines before. Apparently older girls work in a cafe, dressed as maids serving their "masters". Sena decided to assume that whoever owned this place was running a business.

She then turned her attention to the bird on the woman's finger. There was absolutely no way that thing could have been what was talking to them. According to Sena, with the exception of a parrot ( that only repeats what it's heard ) birds DO NOT TALK. End of conversation. But nothing here was normal, she realized.

"Alright," the woman said, as Sena once again tilted her neck to meet her eyes. "So what kind of spirits are you? What floor would you like? Are you all together or separate?" the woman began. "Spirits? Why would we be spi--" Sena stuttered, but the woman continued asking question after question without break. By the time the woman was done, Sena found that she herself was out of breathe. "We're not spirits" Sena stated meekly "We're....ah...we're kids. We wanted to see if we could stay here for a night. I-if that's alright with you, of course". She had wanted to appear brave in front of Sayo and Tomasu, but the woman gave off a particular aura that seemed to be saying "Don't mess with me". Sena rubbed her fingers together, a habit she adopted whenever she was nervous. Would the woman yell at her? Order them out? Maybe even.....kill them..? Sena shuddered, she didn't even want to think about it.

"N-not spirits?" Madeleine stammered as she looked down at the children. "Are... Oh my, you're... you're human!" Her hand shot up to cover her mouth as though she'd uttered some sort of secret she wasn't supposed to have revealed.

"HUMANS?" the little fire-colored bird cried, only to have its beak pinched tightly shut by the maid. It fluttered wildly, it's stifled cries coming out as angry muted murmurs. The woman rushed over to a vase and trapped the struggling creature underneath as it tried to scream out, then rushed back over and huddled the children around her.

"Listen to me," she began in a rapid, hushed whisper, "you must go immediately to the 37th floor. Take the elevator over there; it should be late enough that no one is on it. When you get to the 37th floor, you must go into the big red door that will be down the hall to your right. Do not enter the purple door to the left. Go inside there and find Kamaya. Demand a job from her. Do not accept 'no'. And whatever you do, whatever you see, don't scream. Now go!" The woman bustled off, snatching the entrapped bird as she passed by it. She looked back but once to give them a frantic look, her face silently screaming "Hurry up!"

Sena called out to answer the voice, explaining they needed a place to stay, and Sayo reluctantly turned her head back to the large room, vigorously nodding her head. It was getting late out there. Hopefully whoever had that terrifying voice would turn out to be nicer than they sounded. Tomasu grabbed her hand, and she was thankful for the bit of courage it seemed to impart. The wind suddenly picked up, howling about their heads as if to drive them in. Sayo's hair blew frantically around her head and into her mouth, and she ineffectively tried to pull it back.

Tomasu yelled for the voice to show itself, and Sayo quickly looked at him with wide eyes. The wind increased, pushing the small girl and she stumbled forward. The voice only seemed to get more angry and ominous until it was screeching at them, causing Sayo to cringe, tears filling her large eyes. She gripped Tomasu's hand more tightly, her knuckles showing white. Suddenly, the voice was cut off by another. Sayo was grateful that this voice seemed much more kind, like a babysitter or something. The tall woman swept toward them. She was the tallest person Sayo had ever seen! She looked really pretty, if tired, and her brown curly hair bounced against the fabric of her maid uniform as she walked toward them. A small, orange, and rather fluffy bird flew to her and perched on her outstretched finger.

Sayo's eyes widened when the bird spoke. So that was who was behind the voice! Sayo peered at the bird curiously, noting his fiery plumage. She then stared at the woman's strange feather duster-pen. 'OH! I want one of those!' she thought, eyes wide and eager. Her expression quickly turned to confusion when she asked them what kind of spirits they were. She tried to think of what the answer to that sort of question would be, missing most of the woman's chattering.

Sayo was glad Sena was with them. She seemed to know what to say, and Sayo emphasized her words with nods of her own. The expression on the maid lady's face provoked her to stillness, however. The maid looked like she had just said a bad word. The bird shrieked again, quickly quieted by the maid's hand over its beak. She then caged it under a vase, and Sayo gaped wide eyed at the spectacle, still able to hear muted screeches. The maid whispered to them in a conspiratorial manner, talking quickly. Sayo nodded and quietly repeated random phrases. "37th... elevator... red door... no purple...Kamaya... job... don't accept no... no scream. Got it!"

Sayo's excited gaze darted to the golden door of the elevator that the maid had told them of, and, at a look from the maid, excitedly said, "There!" Without waiting for the other two to respond, she jerked around, still holding tightly on Tomasu's hand. Immediately began running, dragging Tomasu and Sena behind her and up to the door. Pressing the button labeled 37, Sayo sprung into the door, pulling the others inside. She muttered to herself as the doors closed and they steadily rose. "37th... elevator... red door... no purple...Kamaya... job... don't accept no... no scream. 37th... elevator... red door... no purple...Kamaya... job... don't accept no... no scream." Total focus was on her face. When the doors opened, however, she stopped her muttering and gaped at the ornate hall in front of them. Immediately, she pulled her hand out from Tomasu's and ran noisily down the hall, standing in the middle between the red and purple doors.

The red door looked menacing, a painting of a fierce dragon covering it, its long tail circling around the doorknob. The purple door, however, looked rather inviting, with lifelike, large flowers on the bottom and top, long vines crisscrossing in the middle. Without meaning to, Sayo took a step toward the purple door. It was as if it drew her in, and her curious mind wondered why they weren't supposed to go inside this door. Seconds later, she was close enough to the door to touch it, her small, pale hand slowly raising until it was inches from the door. The purple looked soft, almost velvety, and Sayo was entranced by the need to at least touch it.

"Kikiri, please! Would you stop scaring the guests like that?" A woman with a gentle voice swam into Tomasu's view. He had shut his eyes tight as the voice had grown horribly louder and was now peeking between his fingers at the Amazonian figure and the little bird on her finger. His heartbeat seemed out of control as he craned his neck up and tried to calm down by breathing regularly. He hadn't realised until then that he had been holding his breath. After finally being able to focus, Tomasu's mouth dropped as he gaped openly at the bird, never taking his eyes off it. Everything else seemed to pale into insignificant compared to this tiny, fiery creature. It was ethereal and majestic, and so very small, with a lovely golden plumage. Tomasu was almost hynotised by it, finally snapping back to reality as it exploded, "HUMANS?"

Tomasu closed his gaping mouth at last and frowned at the woman as she trapped the bird under a vase. He immediately made to go free it, only to be stopped by Sayo who was still fiercely holding onto his hand. He tried to twist it out, but her grip was surprisingly strong even as she concentrated on what the maid lady was telling them.

"And whatever you do, whatever you see, don't scream. Now go!" As suddenly as she had appeared, the lady was gone again, along with her feathery companion. Tomasu had an extremely strong urge to run after the bird who didn't seem too impressed at being trapped under a vase. Maybe he can come home with me... Tomasu thought ruefully. Before he could think about stepping in their direction, however, Sayo had yanked his hand causing Tomasu to stumble alongside her on the way to the elevator. She was chanting something under her breath as both he and Sena were forced into the golden elevator.

"Hey, WAIT! My bike!" Tomasu shouted but it was too late. The sliding doors shut with a soft sound as Tomasu's red bike lay abandoned in the middle of the expansive floor and they started moving smoothly upwards. "You could have waited just a little bit, Sayo!" Tomasu swiped angrily at the tears that had leaked out of his eyes at the sight of his beloved bike, but she was too busy chanting to notice. That bike had almost been a companion to him for one whole year and was his favourite possession in all the world, joining him on all his adventures around town. He vowed silently to go back and look for it after they had met this Kamaya person.

Sayo released her grip on Tomasu's hand as the elevator doors opened on the 37th floor. He was tempted to stay inside it and stood there with his arms folded across his chest as Sayo ran out towards a red and purple door. The elevator's carpet looked luxuriously soft and fluffy, and the wooden panels surrounding three sides were gleaming. Patterns could be seen in intricate grooves which had been carved out, images of the ocean and forests as well as strange creatures that Tomasu had never seen before. He glanced out at Sayo and saw her move to open the purple door.

"Hey," He called out, "I thought she said the other door." Before thinking about it, Tomasu had stepped off the elevator and it immediately shut its golden doors and left them. Tomasu looked back and said "I'll be back for my bike," as irrational as he knew it was to talk to an elevator, but he was saying it more for his own peace of mind. He walked down to where Sayo was reaching up to the purple door.

"Are you stupid?" He demanded rudely, grabbing Sayo's hand away from the door. "She said the OTHER one." He was still slightly upset at being dragged up the elevator, yet the feeling faded away as he glanced at the purple door. It was not wooden or glass or any material Tomasu could think of, it was simply purple and gorgeous. He had let go of Sayo's hand as his own drifted up to touch the door, just to see if it would sink right through or whether he would be able to touch the soft, cloudy purple door.

Sena shrugged, It was the only thing she could think of to do. What was she supposed to do in a situation like this? Kids were one thing, adults were another. "HUMANS?" the mysterious bird screeched suddenly. Yes, Sena wasn't exactly the violent type, but she was under enough stress already. The moment they entered the building, Sena was suddenly hit with the realization that this wasn't a situation that could be taken calmly. Why are we here? How do we get out? What do we do now? Sena struggled not to just reach out and smack the noisy little bird.

She watched with some satisfaction as the woman hurriedly shoved the creature under a vase, muffling it's fuming and obviously infuriated cries. The woman hustled back to them, giving them a mental list of what they were to do. Though as exasperated as Sena was, she knew when something was important. Sena murmured the words once to herself, completely putting aside the fact that they were going up to the thirty seventh floor -- that meant it was at least thirty-seven stories high. 37th floor, down hall to the right, red door. Got it.

Suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her right limb as she realized that Sayo had literally just dragged the both of them into the elevator.
"Don't worry, we can go back for the bike later -- It'll still be there" she said reassuringly, patting Tomasu's head.

The elevator doors opened, letting a large hallway into their view. She looked down slightly in surprise, as she realized that the floor was carpeted. "Are you stupid? She said the OTHER one." Tomasu's voice cut through the air, as Sena realized that they were already at the door. "Isn't it the red door?" She said quietly to herself, watching as Tomasu stretched his hand out. "Wait!" she called out, running over. "TOMASU. STOP!" she tugged the young boy's hand away, grabbing Sayo's collar with her other hand. She pulled the both back so that they were no longer facing the door. " WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING? She said the red door! SAYO. You especially should have known that! What were you two thinking!?" she said in a hushed, yet threatening voice. She ran a hand viciously through her hair. "I can't leave you two alone for even five seconds!" She began shoving them towards the red door, continuing to scold them. "Who knows what would have happened if you two went in there! It could be dangerous! Even the kids back at the orphanage behave better than you two!" She let out a long sigh. "This isn't like home, you can't go around doing whatever you want. Do you understand?" She knelt down in front of the pair, waiting for a sign that they were listening.

Suddenly, the spell was all but broken when Tomasu jerked Sayo's hand from the door and called her stupid, pointing out that they were supposed to go in the other door. Anger filled the young girl and she burst out with, "Don't yell at me!" Her anger faded as she watched his face, intrigued by the odd way his mouth went slack and his eyes clouded and drooped as he came under the spell of the door. She wondered, vaguely appalled, if she had looked the same way a moment ago.

Suddenly, Sayo's contemplation was interrupted by a hand on the back of her shirt, roughly pulling her back away from the door and pulling out some of her hair on the way. A loud and dramatic, "OWWWW!" rang through the hall, the sound seeming to be soaked up before it could travel very far. When Sena let go, Sayo fell hard onto her rear with another whiny, "Owww, meanie. I just wanted to touch it." A scowl again contorted Sayo's face, her bottom lip stuck out and her brows furrowed as Sena again scolded them. Again, though, Sayo felt knew deep inside that she had deserved it, but she was not ready to admit it. Yet. Sena shoved Sayo up and toward the red door, paying no attention to her 'injuries'.

When she mentioned the orphanage, the scowl melted from Sayo's face. She all but ignored Sena's question, instead asking, "Do you live in an or-pin-age?" She pronounced the word with care. "Does that mean you're an orpin?" Sayo's eyes went wide at the thought, her small lips making a little "o". She had seen one movie about an orphanage. It was a bad orphanage with a mean lady in charge. The orphanage only had girls though, but one girl got adopted and taken away from the horrible orphanage to a rich lady's house. Sayo wondered if that had ever happened to Sena. Curiosity filled her dark blue eyes, as she gazed at Sena's face like it held the answer to her questions.

After a breath Sayo said, "Fine, I won't go through the door. I won't even touch it." Her brows furrowed again as she turned to look back at the purple door. Her eyes widened in surprise when she saw that the cheery flowers on the door seemed to be wilting in response to her decision. The hole door now seemed dark and menacing, each flower now sporting harsh, jagged fangs. Each vine had long, cruel thorns and the soft, satiny look to the door faded, leaving a threatening harshness that desired to destroy whatever touched it. It felt like those cruel flowers would soon reach out and latch on to her.

Sayo gave out a small screech and fairly flew into Sena's arms, crouching next to her and burying her head in Sena's shoulder. Her arms latched around Sena's waist, and her whole body trembled, her eyes squeezed tightly shut. After a moment, muffled sobs could be heard coming from the frightened girl.

"TOMASU. STOP!"

He could have easily ignored Sena's demand if she hadn't yanked his hand away from the purple door, snapping him out of his deep reverie. Her voice had come as though from a great distance away, and his hand was still not fully registering her touch, as though he were completely numb. He shook his head, trying to come back to himself. It was a strange feeling... as though a part of him had tried to eagerly pull away and get through the door - its soft fuzzy surface beckoning, tugging at his heart.

Slowly, as though it were taking days rather than seconds, Sena's voice became clearer, "...whatever you want. Do you understand?" Tomasu frowned at her and was about to dispute that she couldn't tell him what to do when Sayo's voice came into focus.

"Do you live in an or-pin-age? Does that mean you're an orpin?"

"It's orPHAN, Sayo," Tomasu explained but his expression was mirroring Sayo's curiosity as they both stared up at their elder. Tomasu watched Sena's face carefully as she knelt to face them eye-to-eye. He liked her long, flowing hair, not seeing how far down it went, and was tempted to run his hand through it. He didn't think he had met anyone without parents before and felt suddenly sad for Sena. He didn't get to see his own father much, as he was often away with the army but Tomasu was fiercely proud of him, thinking of how he protected those who couldn't protect themselves. Emotion filled him as he looked from Sena to Sayo, feeling protective of his new-found friends all of a sudden. The young boy had been told he looked like his father many times, and he wondered if he could emulate his bravery as well. Despite his itch for adventure, and the purple door hissing softly at his back, Tomasu decided to listen to Sena... this time.

"Fine, I won't go through the door. I won't even touch it." Sayo promised and Tomasu nodded in agreement. Sayo looked behind and Tomasu saw her eyes widened in horror; she let out a scream and ran into Sena for protection. Before he could even contemplate stopping himself, Tomasu spun round and had to drop to the ground. Something had flew out of the surface of the purple door and whipped past his head. He whimpered as it headed back towards the door, afraid to raise his head to see what it was but unable to resist. It was a strange type of vine, pure white with green veins running through it. The head reminded Tomasu of a Venus Flytrap, yet it seemed so much more... demonic. Its jagged teeth were bared in a sort of grimace and it looked ready to strike again.

"Let's go!" Tomasu grabbed Sena's hand, Sayo still wrapped around her. He ran towards the red door, which was looking more inviting by the minute. He ignored the knocker, another shapeshifter like before, and turned the handle. Running through, he made way for the girls before slamming it shut. He panted as he collapsed against the door, squeezing his eyes shut in the hope that this was all a bad dream.

"Do you live in an or-pin-age? Does that mean you're an orpin?" she heard Sayo question innocently. Sena flushed and looked away, a lump forming in her throat. She hadn't wanted the pair to know, fearing that they would start to pity her. They looked so suddenly forlorn, their eyes boring into her. She thought of all the adults who would visit the Orphanage, pity shown obviously on their faces. Children such as herself, or Adults ( she despised the fact that she would become one someday ), Sena never did very well with pity as she could never figure out how to react to it.

Sena forced herself to look back at them, clearing her throat. “Yeah, there's lots of other children there! I'm never lonely either! It's like having a huge family!” she said grinning, dragging out the word “huge” in an attempt to make the orphanage sound better than it actually was. Though she wasn't exactly lying either. Everyone back at the Orphanage was like family to her, and she cared for them just about as much as she did for her sister. It literally was just like a huge family in Sena's opinion – just without any parents. "But who needed parents anyway?" she thought to herself. "They were irresponsible and selfish, no one needed them.
"
“Fine, I won't go through the door. I won't even touch it.” the younger girl nodded, Tomasu following suit.

Sena smiled with relief, not only because the two agreed to behave, but also because they were able to switch to another topic. She heard a yelp as Sayo abruptly and without warning jumped into her arms. Sena cradled the girl, staring curiously at the purple door. She hadn't had a chance to look at it very closely yet, and noticed that there was nothing strange about it. She started at the girl with a baffled look on her face. It was just an ordinary purple-coated door for heavens sake! There was nothing out of place at all! She was even more astonished by the fact that Tomasu had started acting peculiarly as well. She watched with alarm as he threw himself to the ground, a panicked look on his face.

“Let's go!” he shouted at them, grabbing her hand as he dragged them through the red door before shutting it with a loud bang. Sena tumbled after him, struggling to keep Sayo from falling off. She fell to her knees, turning her head towards Tomasu.
“What.Was.That.” she asked, her voice laced with annoyance. “You two promised to behave! And literally seconds later you start screaming and..and throwing yourself all over the place!” She glared at the ground, and started to look around the room....

The carpet and wallpaper seemed to be a pair, as they both had the same design. They were both a dark red shade with a design of golden swirls branching out from one another, with leaves sprouting from them. Actually as a matter of fact, the entire room seemed to follow this design. There was a couch in the far end of the room near the area that they had entered with golden handles. It was near a lit fireplace that was surrounded by smooth marble. With each flicker of the fire, a blurry and barely visible scene appeared. A room of a group of people wrapped soundly asleep, then a room that was empty, with thick paper walls and a plain wooden floor, a series of more scenes like this continued on and on. Finally she focused on a neat desk, it was obviously tidied and looked after with care...

A door slammed violently, ripping the children from their admiration of the room. An elderly-looking figure hobbled from the shadows toward the startled young visitors. A female voice, thick and raspy like a smoker called out to them, "Guests aren't allowed on this floor, especially not in this room." Clearly annoyed, the figure came closer to them. As it emerged from the shadows, its true form could be seen in the crackling firelight. It had the expected body of an old woman, cloaked in dull, worn clothes and shuffling in sandals. However, emerging from the sandals were not toes, but talons like those of an eagle. She had a grayish blue, serpentine neck, scaly and in constant, albeit slow, movement. Her hair had faded to gray and was drawn up tightly in a bun on top of her head. Her squinty, beady little eyes peered at them from behind tiny spectacles, darting around somewhat shiftily. Rather than a nose, her glasses rested upon a giant beak of a dark ebony hue that protruded out from where the rest of her face should've been.

The creature squawked at her unwanted visitors. "Go on! Get out! Kamaya has no time for the likes of you! Kamaya is very busy!" She moved over to the desk and slowly lowered herself into the seat as she began to sort through her papers.
