Dreams
[*] Jesse dreams of saving reality from destruction. Not only does this include what Maya Virtuele has done to society, but it also includes ridding the world of poverty, hunger, war, and depression.
[*] Jesse also dreams of finding his perfect soulmate and building a life with her. He knows that she'll be funny, selfless, loving, and beautiful inside and out.
Fears
[*] Jesse's biggest fear is losing someone close to him, possibly because it has happened to him before, and it took away a big part of his life.
[*] On top of this, he fears losing control of himself and his sense of humor. If depression were to ever hit him, if he could no longer laugh and smile, he'd probably take his own life.
Personality
Jesse is selfless, point-blank. He feels as if his purpose in life is to cut the tension and provide comic relief. He'll crack a joke, do something funny, or sing a song when needed. People often love him for making them feel better. However, he is as serious as a person can get when a situation calls for seriousness. He can work well and think fast under pressure. He also knows when silence is necessary and will turn off his humor for the time being. Otherwise, he just can't stand to see someone suffering. He is afraid that if someone starts crying, he will start crying as well, and no one has ever seen Jesse Kent cry. To make sure it stays that way, he will distract himself and the struggling person with humor. It's just the way he functions, it's the way he has been, ever since his little sister passed away.
History
As many lives are, Jesse's life was difficult growing up. His father was abusive towards him and his little sister, and especially towards his poor mother. Finally when Jesse was sixteen, after years of abuse, his father just walked out of their lives. The problem was that he was the major breadwinner in the family. When he left, he took his money with him and found all sorts of ways around paying child support. Jesse's mother picked up as many jobs as she could get, but couldn't keep many of them as they were only temporary, part-time jobs. The Kent family was suddenly hit with poverty. Of course, Jesse didn't hesitate to throw himself into the work force. His beloved little sister Allie, being only five years old at the time, obviously couldn't do much for their situation...besides, she was beginning to get extremely sick.
Allie's fever continued to spike multiple times. Jesse and his mother weren't even sure what she was being plagued with, as they couldn't afford to see the doctor. Nor did they have much time to take care of her with all the jobs they had to work. At night Jesse would go to Allie's room and hold her, praying for her health to improve. She would feel hot and sweaty, and it scared him immensely. Finally a night came when Jesse entered Allie's room to find that she wasn't breathing, her heart failing to beat. He picked her up, but she felt cold this time. She was dead.
The experience of losing Allie scarred Jesse for the rest of his life. She had been undeserving of her fate. Poverty had done this to her. He needed to block out this depression he was feeling. He needed to help his mother cope. He needed to stay strong. So instead of crying, he laughed. He made his mother laugh. He would go out to the streets, spot a homeless person, and strike up a conversation to make them laugh. It was his calling, to make people feel better. He wanted everyone to stop hurting, because he suddenly understood them all. He understood their pain. And he wanted it to end. Instead of blaming someone, instead of hating the world for his sister's death, Jesse decided once and for all that he was going to change the world for the better. Somehow. He'd end poverty, he'd end hate and war and hunger. He didn't know how, but one small step makes a huge difference. Eventually his mother landed a good job, and Jesse was able to quit his. He enthusiastically started doing volunteer work in and around his community. This was about when Maya Virtuele really started to take off.
Jesse heard about the invention multiple times, it seemed like everyone was into Maya Virtuele. He rarely paid much attention, he was far too busy with volunteer work. But as more and more people became addicted to this virtual reality world, including his own mother, Jesse began to see the real world crumble. It really was an addiction. He had to wonder just how selfish people really were to be spending all of their time in a fake realm instead of doing something worthwhile in the real world. It was ridiculous to him. Jesse vowed never to set foot in the virtual reality that everyone else was addicted to, because obviously the physical world needed people like him to save it. He would save it, he decided. In the name of Allie Kent.
