Introduction
In a world departed from what we know, there lurks the need to survive. Survival is the singular shining star in a world that has gone dark. Will you listen to your instincts or give in and die?
It is the year 2029, and much of the planet is in destructed chaos. Many people have perished, leaving about 30% of the populace. Life has changed from a technological comfort to a daily fight to stay alive. Gangs have sprung up and taken control where government has failed to do so. Former Business me have become sadistic 'Kings'. Slaves and black market goods have become a normal form of trade. You can buy anything, if you can pay the price. This all started in the year 2013...
Early in 2013, reports of whole colonies of honeybees dying were made. This was the beginning of the end. Within the next five years, the bees went into a devastating decline and were soon so scarce that crops and plants began to die. Even with the European efforts to ban pesticides, and other likely factors that were contributing to the deaths of the bees, it made little difference. Entire food crops were lost and the world went into a terrifying food crisis. A brief unity was created around the globe in effort to try and save their food supply. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done. The Damage had been done and the world paid the price. In the years following, the world population began to decline. Further resources were robbed from around the globe to try and save each countries population, but nothing seemed to work.
It was in the year 2023 that the global Unity was disbanded with the usage of nuclear weaponry. War quickly ensued and each country was out for themselves. Europe suffered terrible casualties from this new war, as did China, Canada and the US. Japan was obliterated from the map in the year 2024.
By the following year, civilization began to collapse. The US was the first country to fall into Marshal law and the rest followed shortly thereafter. Government lost its grip and the remaining citizens took back what was theirs, plus some.
This Is where our story begins. The United States has become a Wasteland full of highway robbers, murderers, and Military (trying in vain to restore government). Little civility is left to be found. Food and goods can be found, but at a price. Usually a very high price. A few cities remain, but they are run by warlords and waring gangs. Will you choose a side, or take your things and risk it in the desolate barrens of the Midwest? It is said that even the Military bases are no longer safe.
Electricity is rare, and if someone has it, it is usually not for very long. Batteries are worth their owners weight in gold. Some groups have been trying to reestablish their power but so far, only a handful have been able to. For a very high price, you can enjoy electricity and running water in the Denver City Ruins. Beware though, you may not live long enough to tell the tale.

He had walked into the small town they occupied suspicious, he had ran out frantic. He had even let off a few shots from his rifle at some of them before he got out, and he knew he at least got one of them good. One of them good in the head. They had taken shelter in an old fast food restaurant, 'Fiends of the golden arches' he dubbed them. He chuckled aloud at that one.
They had chased him for about half a mile or so, before the appeal of his flesh had run out. "So much for fast food" he had thought. He laughed at that one, too. He had thought about lighting up a piece of cloth on a stick, to give at least a little light on his journey, and he almost had, until he heard a few lonely bird calls 'sun will be up soon' he thought to himself, 'might as well save the fluid for a better use..'.
He came across a road sign as the sun began to illuminate the land around him. 'Mclean'. An old town, obviously not a big one. '2 miles', he read. 'Not too bad, might be I'll find an old house to sleep in'. Fred had adapted to travelling at night very early on. Most of his dangerous encounters had been during the day, and he had not seen half as many people about during the darker hours of day. Much safer. But it made hunting for food a lot tougher. He learnt to be creative, he had learnt to look for clues to where the feral animals would be sleeping, to where they scavenged most, to where they hid from the roving bands of raiders and cannibals who might fancy a tastier bit of meat. They was usually chewed boxes, turds warm and cold. The smell of a felines urine was unmistakable. And if he smelt it, that meant more than once of the little pests. Why would a cat mark his scent unless he felt threatened?
He came across a cat almost as soon as he entered Mclean, it was basking in the morning sun. There was not much meat on the creature, he could see that through the scope of his rifle. The poor thing had a ruined ear, and a few seconds later, with the squeeze of his index finger and the sharp crack of his gun it had a ruined skull as well. He picked the animal up by the hind legs, and carried it over to a red barn he spied just south of the interstate. An empty field lay next to the barn. The weeds among the whole estate had grown unruly, thick and tall. He made shelter under a tree in the middle of the field. He skinned the creature, and indeed saw there was not much meat on the animal. Nevertheless, meat was meat.
