Gunter Hertz

Ex-member of the HJ; deserted

0 · 398 views · located in United States, Connecticut, Austria.

a character in “Seeking the Blood Flag”, as played by FalloutRomanae

Description

Age
14

Date of Birth
October 12, 1931

Gender
Male

Description
Gunter is maybe 5' 3" tall and has a medium build. He has short, light blonde hair. His skin is pale and his eyes are bright blue-grey. He typically wears short pants, knee socks, leather shoes, and long
shirts with loose vests (All mute tones).

Background
Gunter was born in Hamburg, Germany on October 12, 1929. Gunter's parents died when he was 5 in an airplane crash, and when he recieved the news of his parents' death, he did not speak for 7 years. He was sent to an orphanage, where he was taught the basics that he would have learned in school. He also obtained books on Latin, which he devoured. When he was twelve years old, he was drafted into the League of Young German People. When his soon-to-be superiors came to the orphanage for him, the possibility of acceptance from these people filled him with joy. The first words Gunter said in seven years were, "Ich bin bereitwillig." ("I'm ready and willing.") However, he soon found that he didn't quite agree with their philosophies. Though his superiors indoctrinated him into the Aryan movement, he never actually believed in its teachings. He thought he did, he wanted to, but he soon realized his true mind. At fourteen he was drafted into the HJ, and soon into the fiercest militaristic regiment. Gunter participated in many battles, most of which he wishes he could forget. He was also in the Edelweiß Piraten for a short time, and this was when he got up the courage to actually defy his Nazi superiors. On April 14th he received a letter from his cousin Albert Jurgenstern warning him of the upcoming battle of Berlin. Two days later, on the 16th he had intended to desert, but his plans were foiled by Anna (see below), who refused to come with him and delayed him long enough to make him stay for the first day of the Battle of Berlin. The second day, however, he saw an opportunity to escape and took it. From Berlin he walked and hopped trains to Salzburg, where his cousin Albert lives. There he has been hiding from the remaining Nazis and the people who are coming after the remaining Nazis. During his time in the war, he made many friends, and also fell in love with one of the girls from the League of German Girls - Anna - while she was serving as a nurse. These friends cause him to be ashamed of his desertion, and he wants to get back to Germany eventually to help rebuild and to see if they made it through.

Personality
Gunter is quiet and determined. He was traumatized by his life in the war, but he is still quite a joker, and appreciates humor and sarcasm. He is terrified of the colors red and black, but he can't
seem to stop looking at them. He keeps them nearby whenever he can by keeping his swastika armband in his pocket at all times. He knows this is dangerous, but he can't stand not having it around. This is probably a symptom of his post-traumatic-stress disorder.

Other
He speaks German and Latin natively and English with a heavy German accent. He is unusually proficient with rifles and pistols for most boys his age. He keeps his old uniform in his room at Albert's bed and breakfast. This consists of a brown HJ (Hitler Youth) drill jacket with a "Deutscher Volkssturm Wehrmacht" armband, a tie, uniform shorts, and a flak helpers cap with the HJ insignia. (HJ summer uniform) He also has a HJ knife.

So begins...

Abegail heard the bullets and a yell. On instinct Abegail ducked down on the seat. She slid down so she was on the floor. She was breathing heavily.

Abegail looked up to see if the other two, the boy and the woman, had managed to get low as the second and third shot sounded off. The second shot was followed by a yelp from the driver. The third brought no reaction from anyone. Abegail suppressed a scream as the bullet hit the woman in the head, killing her instantly.

Abegail's hand went to her mouth, tears stinging her eyes as blood bathed the back window of the vehicle. The driver yelled for them to stay down. She had no intention of moving. At least he was alive and still able to drive. Abegail hadn't heard a noise from Walter and she hoped he was unscathed.

They kept moving and Abegail remained crouched on the floor. When they turned a corner the woman's lifeless body slumped to the side and Abegail swallowed the bile in her throat.

Her hands were shaking. Turning on the floor to peer just over the front seat, Abegail looked to the passenger seat. “Walter? Are you...are the two of you alright? She is...”

Abegail couldn't finish the sentence. She was sure they had to know that the third bullet had killed the woman, the blood could not be ignored. A slight turn of her head and Abegail glanced to make sure the boy was alright.

The vehicle rounded another corner freeing its riders from any further gunfire, though Adalwolf had taken the life of one of its occupants. The driver and passengers breathed a collective sigh of relief, they were quickly approaching the edge of of the small town, though they had little hope of escaping.

Walter was at a loss for a possible safe-house, he knew little of the town having never been there before. It was therefore up to Albert and perhaps Gunter to suggest somewhere for them to hold up.

"We must find someplace to hide, at least until we can figure out what to do next."

Turning to Abigail. "I must confess that I'm not quite sure what is going on in this town. I mean Niclas knows where the flag is, its in Linz. So why has he shipped us here to Salzburg?"

Thinking for a moment he continued. "Maybe he just wanted to get us out of the way first."

Gunter and Albert looked at Walter with a strangness in their expression which told the two scholars that they had no idea what was being referenced by this rather odd comment from Doctor Miller. They had a long drive ahead of them so Walter took the oppertunity to fill the others in as to what he and Abigial had come to Austria to find.

Gunter squeezed his eyes shut at the sight of Ella's blood on the windshield. He wiped some of it off of his face in horror. But it triggered something in him, something that he hadn't felt since the Battle of Berlin. A strange calm. It flooded his senses, both sharpening them and dulling them. He recognized it as his fingers started to shake. Adrenaline. His training was finally kicking in again. Sitting up, he replied to the Doctor in a disturbingly serene voice, "Cousin Albert has a cabin. It is safe and out of the city."

Albert nodded, glancing back at Gunter. "I will drive us to there."

Gunter looked at the woman to check on her, finding that she was doing the exact same thing. He nodded to her. But then the Doctor said something about a flag. Gunter and Albert both exchanged glances, then looked at Walter in confusion. Half-way through his explanation, Gunter interrupted. "Ah, yes, we know of this flag. Der Blutfahne. Hitler's artifact. But you say it has magical powers or so? That it can truly resurrect the sixteen immortals? Impossible. I still do not believe it."

Abegail listened to Walter explain to the others about the flag. She met the boy's look and then turned her attention back to the front seat.

She bit her lip slightly when Walter explained that the flag was in Linz, that it was odd that Niclas had brought them here. She shivered wondering just what they had been destined for in that inn.

Abegail focused again as Walter looked at her. She blinked, realizing he was looking for her to confirm his statement. She nodded back, "Yes, some very odd and interesting things." Her voice was slightly hushed. Her mind was still trying to figure out what sort of game Niclas was playing at by bringing them here and why hold these others as prisoners as well.

Talk of a hidden cabin only bolstered her a little. The last time she and Walter had thought themselves safe in a cabin Niclas had shown up and chased them into the mountains. It was like he knew exactly where they were no matter where they went, as if they were always being watched. "Not possible Abby, he can't see everywhere and he only has so many people who can spy for him." Abegail tried to bolster herself with this thought. Logic said that it was a reasonable thought but she knew that not all things in this world made logical sense.

Her eyes flashed as Walter told her that she could join them in the cabin but he was going to Linz. "Walter, yer a right idiot if ye think I will let ye go anywhere without me." She gritted her teeth, her temper bubbling beneath the surface and threatening to burst. It seeped out in her accent and was in danger of gong overboard quickly as she was still trying to calm from their fleeing and the shooting. Her nerves were still to raw and frazzled for her to keep her composure.

"Ye listen here...I look for ye for a year...a year of na knowin' if yer dead or alive. There is no way we are seperatin' now. We should all go, help bury the poor girl and then can head to find this flag."

Abegail huffed and glared at Walter, daring him to argue with her.

Gunter and Albert shook their heads simultaneously. They had both heard from their leaders that the flag had magical properties, but they had never believed it. But if it were true, they wanted to stop it. Walter asked Abigail if she wanted to leave him, and then the woman flamed into a rage. Gunter couldn't understand a word she said through her accent, and Albert only caught little bits. "Was hat sie gesagt?" Gunter asked Albert in a small voice.

"'Nein.'" Albert replied, almost smiling, but not really. "Where do you come from, Ms. McHugh?" he inquired, at the same time wondering about the air of... world-weariness, was it? that these two exhibited. They had to have been through a lot together.

Walter sensed that he had hit a nerve with his statement-His only concern in making such a statement was the well being of the others. Feeling the need to explain himself further, he continued.

"You must all understand, just what exactly is at stake here, the fate of the entire world will be determined by our success, or our failure in this latest mission. With all the loses each member of the allied forces suffered in man power, weapon and resources....I mean, can you imagine if every single Nazi that died in the great conflict would suddenly be risen from the dead."

Looking at each of his fellow travelers in their turn he continued. "Its not just the 13 immortals. That flag was used, if you pardon the expression, to Christian each Nazi flag. Those individual flags flew under every Nazi battalion, throughout the entire regime."

Turning his head in a final dramatic motion and looking out at the landscaping which rushed by the speeding vehicle Walter whispered one last cryptic comment.

"I fear that this will be our last great journey."

______________________________________________________

"Don't you get hot always wearing that trench coat Herr Adalwolf?" Came the derogatory comments of Niclas Elberich as he approached Gottberg at the front of the ramshackle Inn. "Do you ever get tired of being such a pompous ass Herr Elberich." The large Nazi retorted.

Niclas took a position by Adalwolf's side. "Another grand adventure together." Niclas said to his fellow officer. "Oh what bloody fun we shall have my old friend." Gottberg said to Niclas before excusing himself.

Little did Niclas know, he and Gottberg were destined to meet only one other time from this point on. Niclas was determined to seek out the fugitives, he knew where they were going and what exactly they were after. Gottberg on the other hand was out of the loop as far as the particulars were concerned...or so Niclas had thought.

"Soldier my car, fuel it up. We are bound for Linz." Niclas called out to the American Neo-Nazi soldier that had been assigned as his personal chauffeur."

Abegail tooked at the man and the boy. She realized her accent must have been very heavy, they seemed genuinely confused as to what she had said to Walter.

Breathing deeply, trying to clam her anger and regain her composure, Abegail spoke to them. It was slow and measured, her accent drifting away as it did when she was teaching.

“I am sorry gentlemen. My temper tends to bring out my accent. I come from Ireland originally.” She tried to offer them a smile.

She rolled her eyes at Walter. “Every time we go on the search for something the fate of the world ends up in our hands. Last time or not, this is no different. We tackle it one problem at a time and we get to things before Niclas. I fought giants and the fair-folk, what is so scary about a flag?”

Abegail tried to chuckle, it came out as more of a nervous laugh than true amusement.

“I think we need to stay together. The fate of the world is heavy for one person alone.”

Albert nodded. Ireland. That explained her fiery personality. It was a stereotype, he knew, but it fit. Gunter and Albert were both disturbed by Walter's speech. He was right, to a certain extent. If the Nazis came back into power, who could tell what would happen? Abigail seemed unimpressed, however. Since she had been with Walter for a while, they would take her unimpressed air as truth. Walter was probably over-exaggerating. A little.

"I am called Gunter." The boy said. "And this is my cousin Albert. I want to come with you. I will do anything so that the Nazis are kept down."

"Gunter," Albert interrupted, "Es gefärl-."

"I do not care." Gunter shot back. "We must stop this." Then to Walter and Abigail, "I will help you."

Albert sighed. "In that case, I will come too. I must care for you, Gunter."

Both turned to the two professors for their responses.

Walter listened to their prompt responses, though he sensed some resistance from Albert and wondered if he might prove to be a hindrance at some crucial point. Walter also sensed that perhaps the others were taking this too lightly.

Their expectation to receive a glowing statement of approval from Walter was met instead with silence coupled with a slight smile of acceptance. The back of Walter's mind was cluttered with worries and concerns which were the complete opposite of his outward expressions, the professor still had the nagging feeling that this adventure would take its greatest toll relationship wise. Finally Walter spoke.

"Okay, if we are going to do this, we are going to do it right. I have no intention of going up against that psycho Niclas unaided. By the way, that large German man is Gottberg Von Adalwolf. He was Hitler's master executioner. Forget about Josef Mengele, Adalwolf is far worse. Mengele experimented from an aloof scientific perspective, Adalwolf worked directly with the flesh and all the ways it could by mangled and mutilated. In Occult circles his cruelty and fanaticism is legendary."

Walter looked down his elbow to the leather bag hanging from the car door, feeling its contents he knew immediately what lay within, pulling the pistol from the bag he turned back to the starring and concerned eyes of his compatriots.

"We need to defend ourselves at all costs, leave your civilized attitudes behind. If we are going after the flag we must be prepared to do what is necessary."

Abigail looked into Walter's eyes and remembered what he had told her several days before about him having to do certain things which went against his nature-She still did not know the specifics of these actions-Though she was now getting a sense of them.

"Where can we secure more weapons?"

Abegail shook her head. The tension was thick and there was no point trying to keep things light. The oppressivness of it all was gong to be stifling. Walter began to talk about Gotterberg, the man who had shot at them and killed the poor girl. The idea that the man was so brutal and sadistic made Abegail's stomach turn. It also made ehr happier that they had escaped from the inn and the men. There was no telling then what the man might have done to them.

Walter mentioned defending themselves and he pulled a pistol from somewhere that Abegail could not see. He looked at her and Abegail met his gaze. There was a hardness there that had not been there when they first met. He had mentioned that he had done things in the year he was away, in the year she had been trying to find him. Now, in the depths of his eyes Abegail got a glimmer of what those things might be. She could never fully comprehend what had gone on in the time since they had departed from Ireland but whatever he had done had changed him.

"Walter, I understand that we need to defend ourselves. I understand that there is some urgency with this. It will be a last gasp attempt by Niclas, by the nazi's to rule the world but we cannot forget that we are practical people. We cannot let our emotions sweep us up. He has done many terrible things to us and while I hate him I will not lose myself in my anger."

Abegail's words were careful and measured. The tone was calm and she was trying to keep him from drowning in a sea of fear and hatred. "This is no more the end of the world than the quest for the sword was. We will do what needs to be done to the best of our ability, that is all we can do."

She knew that her temper was going to be an issue. Abegail would just have to do a better job of controlling it. Niclas raised her blood pressure by his meer presence. She had never hated anyone in her life the way she hated him.

Breathing deeply, attempting to curb the rising tide of anger that came on whenever she thought of the nazi she looked at Albert and Gunter. "I would not know where we could find weapons." As much as it was no in her nature to defer to anyone, Abegail was smart enough to know when she could not help.

Albert nodded when Walter mentioned having to do uncivilized things. "I understand. For instance, we do not have time to bury Ella. We will have to drop her off at the cabin." he said this coldly, and Gunter's eyes glazed over with the same look that they had in the war. "The only place I know to secure weapons would be back in town. We would have to steal them, and it would slow us down." Albert continued. "I'm not certain the pros outweigh the cons. Do we really need weapons immediately?"

It didn't take long for Walter to mount up a response to Albert's slightly snide challenge. "No Sir, weapons first." Walter had no desire to abuse anyone, but he knew that if they managed to get away from Niclas again, as they surely had, they would be shot on sight the next time they met.

He understood the danger of turning the vehicle around and heading back into town for weapons, but these items would be crucial to their success. The answer to the dilemma soon presented itself to the four renegades. "What is that!!" Walter exclaimed loudly.

The vehicle was quickly approaching the last guard post which stood just outside Salzburg.

The post consisted of two small white buildings on either side of the road, and a long white wooden pole which had been lowered to connect the two structures. The stations were manned by two Austrian guards-One to each booth.

"Pull the car over!!" Walter commanded. Albert reluctantly pulled the vehicle over to the side of the dirt road.

"Why are we stopping here professor?" Albert said with a hint of sarcasm and accusation in his tone. The two of them exchanged harsh glances before Walter climbed into the drivers seat of the VW truck.

"Those guard stations are usually stocked with weapons in case someone tries to break through the blockade. Take the girl's body out of the back."

Walter turned to the others. "I don't intend to drive through the post.....Well, not exactly." Turning to face the road ahead Walter stepped on the accelerator. Like a shot from a gun Walter drove the vehicle at top speed toward the booth on the left side of the road.

The two soldiers attending the post ran out of their buildings with their riffles in hand. The two men ran to the center of the long white pole-Obviously thinking that the driver intended to run their post. To their surprise the man driving the vehicle turned to the right and went up on the small embankment.

Then Walter turned the steering wheel to the left with the intention of crashing into the small structure. The vehicle was just about to jump down from the small incline when Walter ejected himself from the driving seat, the truck crashed into the rickety structure; destroying it completely.

Walter had jumped from the vehicle and rolled down the small hill with weapon in hand. The soldiers lost sight of the driver in the confusion, allowing Walter to gain the upper hand.

Abegail frowned as she listened to Walter talk of uncivilized actions and weapons. A lot had changed in him over the last year and she wondered just what he had gone through while they were apart. Her stomach turned as Albert discussed not burying the woman's body, simply leaving it at the cabin. The tone of the conversation in the car changed and Abegail remained silent.

Her legs ached from where she remained crouched on the floor. She could not bring herself to sit back in the backseat. Her eyes shifted to the lifeless body that lay there. Corpses she could handle but Abegail could not bear the thought of the body slumping over onto her as the vehicle turned. The woman's name was Ella. One of many dead women she and Walter had seen perish at the hands of the Nazi's.

As her mind drifted to thoughts of those people the men talked of the weapons. It wasn't until Walter shouted asking about a building that Abegail once again came out of her thoughts. She looked out the windshield and frowned at the structures.

He then yelled for the car to be pulled over and the passengers exited to stand on the side of the dirt road. Abegail wiped her brow and raised her hand to shield her eyes as she stared towards the guard booth.

“Walter, what is it you are thinking of doing?” She listened and bit the inside of her cheek. For once she managed to keep her temper and outspokeness in control. There were enough harsh looks and tenseness between the others, she wouldn't add to it.

Abegail didn't argue with Walter as he told them that he wanted to sort of drive through the outpost. She shook her head. There was no point in arguing. He was going to do it, regardless of what she said.

Abegail remained on the side of the road and she watched Walter drive off towards the buildings. Her heart jumped into her throat and she held her breath as she watched the car plow into the structure and she could barely make out the figure rolling down the hill.

“Saints alive Walter....” She took off in a run towards where he rolled in hopes of helping him.

Walter's rolling body kicked up enough dirt and debris to shield his movements from the stunned guards, after stopping his free-fall down the small incline with his arms Walter crawled several feat to hide behind some fragments of the former guard post. Looking to the left he discovered Abigail rushing to his position, Walter signaled with a hand gesture for her to crouch low to avoid being spotted.

Walter was concerned for Abigail's safety, now more then ever, having grown particularly fond of her over the last year-The thoughts of being in her company again was all that kept him sane through the last several months-But now he would need her to serve as a decoy so that he might gain the upper hand in an extremely dangerous situation. Walter also signaled for Gunter and Albert to lend their assistance.

Walter opened fire on the two Austrian guards, with the hope that Gunter and Albert might use this as their opportunity to strike.

The guards returned fire.

Abigail was safe, they hadn't yet discovered her position, but then Walter called out her name and turned his body in the direction of where she lay hidden. This gave the two gaurds a focal point from which they could open fire on the second enemy.

Gunter and Albert, not liking being ordered around, grudgingly got out of the vehicle and stood next to Abigail. Gunter watched what followed with horror. Walter was still in the car!... Wasn't he? Gunter's eyes darted frantically around for the professor, but Abigail found him first. She ran after him, then crouched. Gunter saw Walter then, relieved that he wasn't dead. But then he saw Walter open fire and the guards return it. Then he realized - Abigail was in danger! He liked Abigail, though he disliked Walter, and didn't want her to get hurt. She was in the perfect situation to get hurt. Gunter took off at a run around the left of the destroyed outpost, flanking the guards. Drawing his Hitler Youth sheath knife, he sneaked up behind the closest one - the one furthest from Abigail and Walter - who didn't even notice him due to the noise of the gunfire. Then, holding in a cry of terror, the boy pulled back his arm and jabbed the knife into the man's neck. The man tried to scream, but couldn't due to the knife. His gunfire whipped up to the sky as he fell back, jerking in pain. Gunter allowed the now-dead man to fall on him, shielding him from the eyes of the other combatant. Then he waited.

Albert watched Walter's actions with a sort of respect. The man had guts, he had to give him that. Then he looked about for Walter. Where had he fallen, in that madness?... There. On the embankment. And he was signaling for them to help. There was gunfire everywhere, but the guards had not noticed the two Germans standing where the car used to be. Albert had an idea. "Gunter-" he said, turning, but Gunter was gone. Now quite worried, Albert's gaze whipped around trying to find his little cousin. One of the guards fell backwards, twitching. Albert, recognizing the glint of the Hitler Youth knife on the man's neck, just barely saw Gunter under the man's corpse. Panicking, Albert just ran toward the second guard - he would notice Gunter any moment! The man turned to check on his buddy, saw Albert, and fired, hitting him straight in the chest. Albert fell to the ground, wounded. The guard assumed that it was Albert who had thrown the knife and went back to shooting at Walter, the only other opponent - or so he thought.

Abegail could not see where Walter had landed or in what condition he was in. She knew approximately where he should be but there was no telling for sure with all the dirt and bits of things in the air.

Then his face appeared through the dust and relief washed over her but he began gesturing at her to get low. Abegail realized just how exposed she was and did as he asked. She crouched down, finding some shrubbery to shield her and took a few calming breathes. Her eyes watched Walter for a sign of what to do next. She was sure none of the guards had seen her yet as shot began to ring out in the air.

Abegail watched, her brow knotted in worry as Walter began to shoot at the guards. In response, shots began to impact the ground around where Walter had taken cover. She heard bullets hit wood, splintering it and sending the pieces into the air.

Walter called her name and he turned as if he was going to move towards her, turning to face where she crouched. Abegail blinked when she realized he wasn't moving but now the guards were shooting at her instead of at him.

Abegail fumed, torn between anger and fear as a bullet lodged itself into a nearby tree. Abegail began looking around for another spot to hide. The shubbery would not give her enough cover for very long. A look to her right and down from her just a short distance was a pile of rock. It was just large enough for her to hide behind, if she could get to it.

With a deep breath and one last look down the small hill, Abegail half ran, half rolled towards the rocks. Her arm contacted the ground as she moved, bringing a grunt from her. She slid the last little bit into the rocks her side bumping the rocks and knocking the wind out of her.

Abegail gasped in pain as she huddled behind the rocks. The bullets had continued as the guards had tried to fire on the moving woman and now they targeted the rocks. One gestured to the other, signalling to keep firing as he moved up the hill and towards the rocks.

Looking around she tried to see Walter. She also, from this position could not see Albert or Gunther. She suddenly felt very alone and very vulnerable. "Stupid move Abby..."

Albert struggled on the ground, trying to get up, but it was useless. Some of the shrapnel had pierced his stomach, and there was no surviving a stomach wound without serious medical attention. He knew that he was going to die. He rolled over so that he was looking up at the sky. "Gunter!" he yelled. "Gunter!" the fighting stopped. "Gunter!"

Gunter waited until the fighting stopped, then tried to push the guard off of him. After a few tries, he managed to wriggle out from under the man. He pulled his knife out of the man's neck and began to wipe the blood off on the grass. But then he heard someone calling his name. Albert. Gunter looked about for him, and after a short while saw him lying on the grass maybe 15 meters away. Gunter gasped and ran over to him. And then he saw the blood. It was everywhere, covering Albert's whole body. "Nein..." Gunter breathed, horrified. This couldn't be happening. Albert couldn't be dying. Albert was strong, stronger than Gunter. He deserved to live. "Albert..." Gunter's voice choked in his throat, then he fell to the ground, holding his cousin's head in his lap. Albert began to cough on his own blood. Gunter recognized the kind of wound from the kind in Berlin, and he knew that nothing would help. But he felt helpless. With Albert going away, who would take care of him? What would happen? "Professor!" Gunter shouted, holding back tears. "Professor, you must help! He is dying!"

Abegail stayed ducked behind the rocks. Gunshots rang out still some fast and others slow. Abegail frowned. There was still dirt around her disturbed from errant lead so she remained crouched. She did a not lot of impulsive things but coming out from behind the rocks would be plain stupidity. There was a cry, a man yelling in pain but the words were German and relief came quickly as Abegail knew it wasn't Walter that had been hit. Then a sickening thought crept in as she thought of the boy and the man who had been in the car with them.

"No....no..." Abegail brought her hands to her face and silently prayed that it was a guard who had yelled and not one of the others.

Then a single shot went out and was followed by silence. Abegail removed her hands from her eyes was waited. The quiet didn't last. A man's voice was calling for Gunter. Abegail's stomach dropped. They had shot the boy. Tears welled in her eyes. Slowly, on her hands and knees Abegail crawled to the edge of the rocks and looked. She surveyed the scene. With slow sickening dread she saw that the man was calling for the boy but it was he that was shot. The driver, Albert was laying on the ground and there was far too much blood escaping his body.

Abegail watched the boy appear and scramble to the man. He cradled him and yelled for Walter. She heard the boy yell that Albert was dying. "Saints in heaven." Her voice whispered prayer for the man that had helped them. She then looked for Walter.

He was walking towards the outpost. His movements were almost mechanical. Abegail looked to where he was walking from and saw the guard on the ground. There too was blood. Walter didn't appear to be hurt but she couldn't be sure he wasn't just in shock from all that had gone on. There were so many bullets flying she couldn't be sure at that moment that she herself was not hurt and just not feeling it as of yet.

Standing on shaking legs, Abegail moved down the remaining slope towards where Gunter and Albert were.

"Walter! Walter...come..." She ran the last little distance and slid to her knees. She looked at the boy. Her face was full of sympathy. She had no experience with wounds but she could tell the injuries were severe. "I...I don't know what to do."

Abegail felt helpless. She reached out and took Albert's hand. She could think of nothing else that she could do. Abegail looked down at the injured man. "Thank you for waiting for us...thank you...." It felt almost hollow and empty but she wanted him to know that his kindness had been appreciated.

Walter was scavenging through the second guard post for much needed supplies, and after hearing the cries of Albert and then of Abigail he grabbed a medical kit. Exiting the gaurd post Walter walked at a quickened pace over to where Abigail knelt as she held Albert's hand.

The closer Walter got to the bleeding man the more he knew that there was nothing that could be done for him, he had seen many people die in the last year; being killed in nearly every grisly way imaginable.

Walter did something at that point which he hoped Abigail nor Gunter would catch onto, he had called them over as if he wanted to discuss the options that they had concerning Albert and his wounds, allowing enough time to allow the inevitable to occur-A few seconds later Albert was dead.

Abegail heard Walter come over to where the small group waited. Albert nodded to her. The boy and the man began speaking in German and Abegail simply knelt there and held the injured man's hand. They seemed to be in a disagreement about something. Albert coughed, blood welling onto his lips. Abegail bit her lip to hold in her tears.

Walter asked them to join him. Abegail gave Albert a small smile, squeezed his hand and then stood. The boy followed as well. Walter was talking but the words rang hollow. Her gut told her that there was not much that they could do without help.

By the time they had finished Albert lay peacefully on the ground. Abegail felt helpless and she hated that feeling. She was also very sad. Another person had lost their life helping her and Walter. Her hands clenched into fist but Abegail turned pressed her face into Walter's shoulder. Tears fell, leaving a wet stain on his jacket but she couldn't help it.

After a short time, Abegail regained her composure. “I am sorry Walter.” She stepped away from her colleague. Wiping her face she watched the boy head off into the structure to look for weapons.

Abegail turned to Walter. “I'll go look for keys and a vehicle, ours is in no condition.”

Abegail knelt beside each deceased officer and began feeling for keys. Her hands trembled slightly as she sorted through the dead men's pockets.

She eventually turned up a set of two keys and pocketing them she went in search of the vehicle they belonged to. Abegail found a military jeep. She sighed. They could only get so far in it before someone would question why they were driving it when they were clearly not soldiers.

“It will have to do.”

Abegail climbed in, started the engine and pulled it around to where the other two would see her. She turned off the vehicle and waited. Looking down at her hands she saw blood where Albert had taken her hand. She hastily wiped it on her pant leg and then turned her eyes to where Walter and Gunter were moving around.

Abegail's eyes narrowed slightly at Walter's joke. She smiled and shook her head. He was trying to lighten the mood and she couldn't blame him for that. Everything had been quite bleak the last couple of days and they could all use something to ease their minds. Unfortunately, the next part of their journey was unplanned and they were embarking into the unknown. Abegail could feel it in her gut, things were going to get more stressful and scary before they got better, if they improved at all.

“Back roads is fine by me.” The engine was started and Abegail began to drive along the dirt road. She relied on Walter to help navigate, having never been here before she had no clue where she was going.

Abegail, focused on the road for the first part of the journey slowly began to realize the world around her. The mountains were majestic to say the least and even while trying to keep the jeep on the road she admired the beauty around her.

“I wish I was here on vacation...and could enjoy this...” Abegail's thoughts were still clouded with sorrow for death of those around them. Guilt marred the beauty around her as well, guilt that they had left both the woman and Albert where they were slain and had notified no one. Stress for what they would find in Linz made her feel ill. Walter must have realized that she was not alright. When he offered to take the wheel, offered to rub her shoulders a little Abegail nodded almost absentmindedly.

She pulled the jeep over and the two switched seats. Abegail looked at Gunter. A quick check calmed her slightly. At least the boy was alright.

Abegail climbed into the passenger seat and tried hard to focus on the sights that passed them by. She looked front as Walter announced their arrival in Linz. Her eyes met his. “Now what? We need to get rid of the jeep but then we have no transportation. I have no money for a hotel....my briefcase...everything.” Anger tinged her voice and tears began to sting her eyes. Her fingernails dung into her palm as she clenched her hands closed.

Taking a deep breath, Abegail tried to let it go, even just a little bit. She disliked feeling unprepared and mildly helpless. “What is the plan Walter? Where do we need to go and what exactly are we looking for?”

Her mind was glad to have something to focus on, a goal was helpful in these sorts of situations.

Gunter returned, his arms full of guns and ammunition, to find that Abigail had found a Jeep. Walter had just made some wry remark, and Abigail seemed slightly uncomfortable. Gunter was almost beyond caring how they felt. They were just strangers. He numbly got in the Jeep and waited to travel. As they started to move, he could tell that both the Irish woman and the American were astounded by the scenery, but he couldn't care less. Albert was gone. He was gone and he would never be back. Looking down at himself, Gunter felt sick. Albert's blood was all over his grey-ish shirt and vest, making them a disgusting purplish color. He tried to shake thoughts of Albert from his mind, but it was hard. Now he was totally alone in the world except for these two people Albert had rescued. No parents, no brigade, no cousin. He almost longed to go back to the army just so that his life wasn't so complicated anymore. He just rested his head in his hand, his elbow against the side of the car, and fiddled with a loose string on his vest. He looked so strikingly like a normal boy at that moment, bored and fidgeting, that he was quite shocking to look at - all childish and covered in blood.

'We're here.'

Gunter looked up to see the city of Linz around them. There was a sinking feeling in his gut as Abigail began to worry.

'Now what? We need to get rid of the Jeep, but then we have no transportation. I have no money for a hotel....my briefcase...everything...'

Gunter hated to see her suffering like that. She was one of the only two people in the world that... what? That he could trust? That he was connected to in any way? He wasn't sure, but now they were in this together, and so, not sure what to do, he reached out and patted her arm.

'What is the plan Walter? Where do we need to go and what exactly are we looking for?'

Gunter looked to Walter for an answer to Abigail's question. Now Gunter realized that in order for this relationship to work, he would have to treat Walter as he would Albert. He would have to trust him completely, even with his life if need be. The situation demanded it. Clamping his jaw, he took a deep breath. This was no easy task they were undertaking. It was very possible that Gunter would die as well, or Abigail, or Walter; he would have to be prepared for that.

Abegail stepped out of the van and stretched her arms a bit. Every part of her was knotted and tensed but simple stretchng wasn't enough to alleviate it. There was too much unknown in their future. She followed as Walter began to head down the to the main road into Linz. Gunter followed as well.

Abegail was thankful she wasn't carrying a gun but the sight of the boy with them put her on edge. It seemed so wrong for a child to have to act so grown up. It was a shock to her system. At his age she was running wild in the pastures of her family's farm in Ireland, not fighting a war or comforting adults. Abegail softened as she remembered the way the boy had patted her arm when she was distressed about not having money. He was far more hardened than she was and again that saddened her.

"What has he seen and been through to be so..." Abegail shook her head. She knew enough that in the brief time she had known him the boy had seen more than many adults ever would.

"Oh, Walter...Walter wait..." Abegail realized that Gunter was covered in stains. Blood, Albert's blood. "He is covered in blood, we can't just go walking into town with him like that." Abegail waited for Walter to stop in his trek to the main road. She bit her lip, brushing her hair from her face and considered the problem. "One shirt, we just need a new shirt for him."

Abegail looked down. She too had stains. Her pants, from where she had knelt next to the dying man while she held his hand, showed remnants of his life. "And a pair of pants." Abegail gave Walter an apologetic look. She knew he wanted to get moving to push on and into Linz but a man travelling with a blood stained woman and boy was sure to provoke interest that they did not want or need.

Falling in beside Walter she listened to his plan as she considered what to do about their clothes. It was fortunate that the Nazi's had been moved. With the war over and Hitler dead she had heard many stories of troops being moved into areas where they could be disbanded or reassigned with a new goal. Abegail wasn't sure exactly how it was all working out between the allied forces and Germany, she kept up on the basics of the current news while her mind immersed itself in the past.

Abegail winced. Plans were never that simple and Walter knew that. He had to know deep down in his gut that they have never had anythign go easy and just when they thought they could breathe again Niclas showed up or they ended up in a cave or being shot at....

"Walter, I think that will work for a basic plan but we canna just waltz into Linz, covered in blood, steal the flag and think we will be scott free. Even if the rest were tha simple the blood is goin' ta make the people here nervous." It was making Abegail a little nervous and with her mind preoccupied and her fears getting the better of her, her accent began to slip again.

"We need ta steal or barrow some clothes."

Abegail watched as houses started to appear on the edges of Linz. She spotted people's laundry, last loads attempting to dry in the fading daylight. Indicating with her head towards one house Abegail crept up and crouched into some underbrush a few metres from the house.

"So...beg, borrow or steal?"

Gunter sighed when it was time to get out and walk. He wanted to be alone with his thoughts. He wanted to just sit and think and think and think. But there was no time for that now. They needed to move. So he clambered out of the Jeep, banishing all thoughts of Albert from his mind. He tried to focus on the task at hand - get to the museum and steal the flag. Walter said it would be easy, that the absence of soldiers made it simple. But that was wrong. Nothing was easy. Abigail's voice interrupted his thoughts.

'Oh, Walter... Walter wait... He is covered in blood, we can't just go walking into town with him like that.'

Gunter looked down at his shirt and remembered that he was, in fact, covered in blood. He started to feel sick again and could feel the congealed blood sticking to his skin. They did need to find clothes soon. Her other words washed over him along with a wave of heat, and then a wave of cold. He couldn't quite hear her. It was like he was trying very hard not to fall asleep. He recognized the feeling from after a battle: he was going into shock. He often got this way after a particularly traumatic confrontation. Post-combat shakes was what most people called it. He numbly followed Abigail over to the house and heard her say something. He couldn't really discern it. It echoed to him a million times until he finally heard,

'So...beg, borrow or steal?'

He liked none of the options. Thinking was hard to do, but he finally managed to mumble in a garbled voice that was almost impossible to understand combined with his heavy accent, "Shteal. Bu' shomone else should do it. I am not feeling vell."

Abegail crouched in the greenery and waited for an answer. The first one to answer was Gunter but it was garbled, heavy accented and weak. She turned to look at him, concerned about the boy. The sight that met her eyes made Abegail gasp and forget about needing clothes.

Gunter was pale, a slight sheen of sweat and green tinge to his skin. Abegail was able to make out the end of what he said. “I am not feeling vell."

Moving closer to him she reached out and gently held him up. In her softest, most comforting tone she whispered to him. “It's alright now...ye'll be alright.” She gently brushed the hair from his forehead, feeling the clammy skin under her fingertips. He had been through a lot and Abegail was worried now about keeping such a young boy with them on such a dangerous task.

Walter looked back at them, pointing to a house. He started walking again and Abegail did her best to help Gunter move slowly towards where Walter had pointed. The pair followed the professor but Abegail did while only half paying attention, her focus was on Gunter and making sure the boy made it to some place where he could sit down. She understood that Walter was eager to get moving but she felt they needed to ensure that this boy, now in their care was looked after.

They stayed in the shadows as Walter requested. Abegail kept talking to Gunter as they walked. “We'll get ye some clean clothes and some water.”

She began humming softly to him as they walked, not sure what else to say. It was a song her mother used to sing to her when Abegail was young. It was all she could think to do.

Walter stopped at a house and knocked on the door. The figure that appeared made Abegail pause. She pushed Gunter slightly behind her, wishing to keep the boy from sight and possible harm as the tall man welcomed them into his home.

Abegail was used to friendly neighbours but something about this felt off to her. He seemed alright, white beard and black hair but he did not question their appearance, how they had ended up walking to his home, the lack of baggage or even asked if their travels went well. He did not enquire as to why Walter had brought people with them or why one of them was a young boy.

They were escorted in, seated in a livingroom and concerned looks passed between Walter and Abegail. She sat Gunter near her, still concerned for his well being.

Time passed and Abegail managed to most basic of conversation, cordial and concise but the whole thing still felt very off to her. Anders, as he was introduced offered his car to the group to head ot the library. She realized he was a friend and contact of Walter's but that he knew what they were planning to do stay poorly in her stomach.

“Before we go, may I have a glass of water for our young friend. He is not feeling very well.” Her accent was gone again, vanished behind her careful sentence. Abegail was standing now, waiting for Walter and Anders to make the next move.

“Water...car...museum and flag...”
She repeated the thought over and over again but somehow it did little to comfort her.
