Maycenna

"Here's an easy riddle for you: If you break me I do not stop working, If you touch me I may be snared, If you lose me nothing will matter. What am I?"

0 · 318 views · located in The Forest of Meiro

a character in “Seven Roses”, as played by Skwidge

Description

Full Name: As most Sphinx names are extremely difficult to pronounce and spell, she asks everyone to refer to her as Maycenna. (May-Sin-Uh) It is the closest thing to her actual name. Nickname is May (Used only by Mira or Aoi).

Age: Unknown.

Breed: Sphinx.

Role: The Yellow Rose's Follower/Companion.

Appearance:
Image Image
^ All details are here that basically represent her. ^ Wings and basic colors, excluding the gold main.

Brief Description: Unlike the rest of her kind, Maycenna stands at a height around 28 inches; that of an Eurasian lynx. The larger bulk which the remaining species posses is distasteful to the young one herself, and she prefers to be able to get in and out of small areas easily, as well as remain obscure. It was the sphinx's own decision to become this size, and she has always found it most fitting. Although Sphinxes have the characteristics of a humanistic face, Maycenna prefers to wear a mask. Her mask is porcelain with gold trimmings. The object's outline displays tiny luminous crystals devised by both the Green Rose and the Yellow Rose alike, in order to aid her companion if need arises. The pelt of this sphinx is overall a dusty gold with ash-colored markings of an African wildcat. Maycenna's mask is of an owl, to portray beauty, grace, and wisdom. Eyes are a tundra grey with sea green flecks. Has semi-long, dark brown hair. Maycenna is one of the Sphinxes who have retained her feline ears instead of human ears. Hair is usually down, but sometimes put up by her Master for meetings and special occasions.

Personality: Maycenna is extremely graceful in the way she holds herself and walks, having it reflected by the air of wisdom she possesses. Her sight and hearing are exceptionally keen, hardly missing anything in her surroundings. However, this sphinx will never tell a person outright of any danger, they must first, as customary, answer a riddle, whereas following May will either give them the information, or the answer to the riddle will clue them in on it. As with all creatures, she also has another side. Occasionally she'll end up being sly and mischievous, taunting or even toying with others. In this phase she enjoys using sarcasm.

History: When Maycenna was born, she was relatively celebrated over. For most Sphinxes are female, the males being exceedingly rare to find, thus causing the species to be scarce. She grew up in the foot hills of the mountains by a stream, with only her mother caring for her carefully. It would be not only devastating, but disgraceful as well, should a Sphinx kit die. The Sphinx mothers are banished from the clan until the birthing and weaning is finished, and then allowed back in the group. This is for the kit’s safety only.

The way Sphinxes share their wisdom with each other is through riddles, and this is exactly what May’s mother did for her as she was growing up. Sphinxes travel throughout the entire world, including some other realms, in order to gain information so they can form riddles. The species is one that craves knowledge and are used as guardians for some areas and treasures. If you answer a Sphinxes riddle incorrectly, you will be devoured. However, Maycenna frowns upon this practice, considering all she’s ever really experienced are rogue vampires, and has only come across two humans in her lifetime so far. The Sphinx are sometimes able to capture their victims with their gaze, forcing them to remain on the spot to answer their riddle and hopefully answer it wrong so the Sphinx can gain a delicacy. Of course this is ‘most unfortunate’ for the humans.

Maycenna does share the ideals of humans being delicious, but she has never gotten a chance to actually test such a theory out.

Once she was weaned, her mother abandoned her and disappeared back into the forests to rejoin the others. Maycenna had it pretty boring afterwards, always scaring off the random little creatures with her features, and growing to despise the humanistic features she possessed. She ran across a few rogue vampires, getting the chance to play riddles on them. Honestly, this was only for entertainment, there was no possible way for her to actually eat any of them, nor would she want to either. They always got them wrong.

Then on an evening sometime during the autumn months, she stumbled across one of the Roses. And this Rose happened to be stuck in a pitfall trap; obviously not by her own stupidity. She was extremely curious, thus causing the craving of knowledge to arouse within her. The sphinx approached her, and immediately asked her a couple of riddles. Maycenna was utterly surprised to find that she got each and every one of them correct, despite her dire condition. As custom, she assisted the Rose in every way that she could for answering the sphinx’s riddles.

She told the girl her name (what was closest to it anyway) and asked to come along and live with her. The girl, Miraiya, accepted the proposal, and thus their companionship started. May allowed the information about her despising her human face to the Rose, and requested a mask be formed for her. She was granted her wish, and the mask was formed in the shape of an owl, for beauty and wisdom, with very small luminous crystals embedded on the edges and feather tips.

Maycenna adores the Radiant Hall, as well as Mira and Aoi (although on a much lesser level; only because she is her master’s sister and her master likes her very much), and stays by Miraiya’s side at all times. She does her best to ensnare people with difficult riddles in order to bring them to her master to see if she will accept them for her goals. Though these happenings are beyond rare, having only happened twice and both ended in failure, May is still searching for a human for the Rose Mira.

~ Maycenna has an extremely horrifying side to her when a werewolf or 'more intelligent being' fails her riddle. By the laws of the Sphinx, anyone who gets their riddle wrong will be eaten. Maycenna is able to grow in size when a riddle is failed, thus giving her the ease of access to take down said prey. However, when it comes to vampires, she remains small, even if a riddle is not answered correctly. It's got to do with random magics and bindings of the Olden.

So begins...

The bedroom was dark, and devoid of sound. The many crystals that shone outside did not penetrate this empty sanctuary, the crimson curtains blocking out the moonlight just as the door and walls shut out the radiance for which the hall was named. The only light in that room came from 14 crystals, suspended by iron rods jutting from the back of the lone silhouette that lounged on a stool at the very center of the room, hunched over a small table upon which stood a platoon of tiny soldiers, awaiting only their master's command to move.

Silence. A sudden rush of air. A clattering as the last piece landed perfectly on the surface of the chessboard, the black king falling into its place. Two crimson eyes opened in the darkness, and the Lord of the Moonlight smirked, giving a quiet chuckle of amusement.

"Haha... Well, that's interesting," The Vampire said with a laugh, grinning down at the chessboard. The sensation she had just felt... It was faint, but it was there. For a moment, there had been a great rush of light not of this world. Such a thing could never escape her keen eyes. No, unlikely as it might have seemed, there was only one explanation.

"It seems the enemy king has finally made his appearance. In that case, I suppose I'll greet him with my knight." As she spoke, she moved one of the white knights out onto the board.

"Maycenna!" She called. Doubtless, the Sphinx was waiting just outside for her commands. "Our long awaited opportunity has just arrived. I want you to bring Assavar and Aoi here right away, and then head to the door in the hill. It seems someone has just done the impossible, and I would like to know the true face of this miracle."

There was a small flicker of gold, caused by the glow of the crystals descending graciously from the ceiling. Something shifted in the faint light, and a face appeared in the doorway; Though never a normal face. Two feline ears twitched, and bright eyes gleamed from behind that of an owl mask. The same crystals that were hanging from the vast ceiling were encrusted in the figure’s mask. Each feather had a light crystal somewhere on it. The lights reflecting and shining from the larger ones filtered down, almost as if they were reaching out for the smaller ones. As they did, that light got sucked up and stored, though the lighting remained exactly the same, and no harm was done at all.

The Sphinx bowed, one paw outstretched before her own self, and the other bent in the motion. Gentle ashen-colored white wings outstretched for a moment before snapping silently and gracefully in a stretch, returning back to the feline’s side, her tail sweeping along the ground. “Yes my Lady. I shall go and retrieve both the griffon and the green.” A smile flickered across what features were open to be seen, and a sweet and small purr emanated from the cat’s vocals. “And I shall make utter haste to go and seek out the black prince.” With another bow, the feline-like creature swept out of the room graciously, waiting one moment before stepping away from the room.

Her paws then began to patter along the stone of the floors as she went after the two, who, most likely, were together as they almost always were. She would just have to deduce whether or not they were within the hall, or without. Either way, the deed would be done quickly.

Aoi gracefully stepped down the vast rooms of Radient Hall. Lights of every which color shimmered from the ceilings and walls, casting blue and greens across her pale, and delicate skin. Her long, ink black hair cascaded down her back, as her soft blue eyes gaze about in curiosity. Each step she took echoed across the massive, yet empty, room. "Dear me..I can't seem to find my precious Asavar..I wonder where he could be..." Aoi mumbles with as a soft frown across her pink lips. She loved her pet, Asavar. At least, that was what she saw him as. Her beloved sister's pet...well..she got treated more as a slave, but the sphinx never seemed to complain...

With a shrug, Aoi brushes the thoughts away, hearing the pitter patter of foot steps behind her. Turning on her heals, her eyes sparkle against the lights, and land on the sphinx in which she had just been thinking of. "Aah, hello there lovely~ Did my sister send you?" She asks, twirling a thick strand of black hair between her hands. As she stepped forward, however, Aoi tripped up over her own two feet, and fell flat against the tiled floor. "Oof!" she grunts out, laying there silently for a a short while...Aoi slowly pushes herself up with her hands, standing and brushing some dust from her clothes. Her knees stung, but she ignored it, forcing a huge grin on her face. "Oops! Haha!" She laughs, rubbing at that back of her head embarrassingly.

The sphinx bowed once more, a mischievous smile on her face. "But of course, my little flower source." Her ear flicked, and she stretched, yawning. "Please get Asavar and go to Mira's room." The feline nodded softly, hopping nimbly onto the railing. "You really must be careful, little thing. I'm sure your knee probably stings. It looks pretty scraped up. You can easily get tile-burn from these floors." That same smirk reappeared, and she jumped from the railing, using her wings to catch the air underneath as well as the propulsion of her back legs as she sprung from her previous point, coming to a rest on a small outcropping on the very large wall.

The feline's eyes then narrowed, and she slipped down from the wall, opening up the door and slipping out into many hallways towards one of the doors leading to the outside. Her foot pattering resounded in the empty halls, and she then pounced up, landing on the doorknob and pressing down on it, the door coming open and the faint light filtering in. She then spotted Asavar, and she grinned widely. "Well, hello good-looking~" She purred, obviously toying with the proud griffon. "You and Aoi are both required by Mira, please be so gracing as to come into my Mistress' room. There is some interesting news." And with that, she disappeared into the underbrush, her ears perked and very alert, her mouth slightly open as she took in the scents, and using the very faint tug in order to get to the door in the Forest of Meiro.

Asavar snapped his head around in the direction of the intrusion. Good Looking? While yes, he supposed compared to whatever this lowly creature had ever seen, he was good looking, but her compliments would get her no where. He was not a servant nor did he jump up and down when her mistress said so. Her mistress could require all she wanted, Asavar was going no where. A Griffon did not move to the bidding of a vampire. Perhaps in time, the vampire would learn some manners and ask... but more importantly, learn to come herself and not send her servant. Until then, Asavar was more then content to remain where he was. Also, interesting usually meant something interesting to their kind, not to him. Did they find some lowly prey they wished to feast upon? Did something happen to one of the other members of their little flower party? Either way, It did not concern him.

The sphinx had ruined the atmosphere, so it was time for a change in scenery. Snapping his wings out, he beat them a few times and sent himself soaring into the air before tucking his wings back in and shooting at the roof of Radiant Hall. Snapping his wings back out once more, he broke his rapid decent and lowered himself onto the top before laying down once more this time a little higher then the rest of the creatures of the forest. It was only right that they have to look up to him. Content with the change... although now all he saw was a depressing view of a dull forest and a black sky, it would do.

Aoi giggles softly as the Sphinx said what she already knew; that her knees had stung. But she wouldn't let that bother her. It was as if she was more immune to pain now, being that she experienced it plenty of times in her clumsy ways, than when she was younger. "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. I heal fast, anyways." Aoi coos, as the scrape seemingly disappeared after a few minutes. There was still a little blood left on the pale skin, giving it a nice color for a change, but otherwise, it was fine. Her eyes seem to sparkle in excitement at the apparent summons of her sister. She loved her twin sister dearly. Although they didn't look much a like, they had been born at the same time. They had always been there for each other...

Turning her head slightly to watch as the Sphinx seemed to run into her deer pet, Aoi gave a soft sigh, while smiling at the same time. She knew Asavar was the type that liked his peace. She also knew that the Sphinx would only be wasting her breath if he did not feel like coming...His golden feathers were quite the sight for her eyes. They were beautiful, and sometimes, Aoi would collect any in which fell off, hoping to one day make a necklace out of them...Or some sort of fabulous item...With a soft shrug, Aoi turns on her heals, heading towards her sister...If Asavar wished, he would join them...But she would not make him...Although she did enjoy his company...

The large doors of her sister's room creek open, light slowly leaking through. This caused a large shadow to cast over her, leaving only her figure to be seen. "Eep!" Aoi yelps, as she trips over the slightly-raised floor while trying to step into the room. The familiar clumsiness and voice of the shadow would tell the yellow rose right away who it was..."Ah, sorry sis...I came as fast as I could..." Aoi states, slowly closing the doors behind her. The light was soon cut off, so that they were now alone, in the shadow covered room.

The Sphinx's claws silently dug into the dirt, kicking up clumps of dead grass and leaf-litter as she ran. Luckily, Radiant Hall was located in Meiro Forest, so it should be fairly quick to reach the door and begin to investigate. The underbrush here was beginning to catch in her fur and it even ripped out two feathers before she finally decided to take to the trees. The feline crouched down, tail twitching ever so slightly and pushing the litter about before she kicked off of her back legs, springing forward and up towards a branch. She landed relatively nicely in her crouched position, then rose, her head swiveling on her shoulders as she examined the surroundings.

Maycenna nodded silently to herself before latching her claws into the trunk of the tree, a small scraping noise resounding as she used the bark as leverage, pulling herself up to a higher point within the tree. Once she was satisfied and very high up by now, she began to hop forward, her wings acting to catch the wind and allow her to move upwards as well as forwards quickly. So she went from tree to tree, her lips upturned in a smirk as the feathers of her mask shifted a bit in the eerie wind.
She only had about fifteen trees left until she was in the vicinity of the area, and she quickly closed that distance.

A branch swayed downwards before pushing back up into its original position. However, the Sphinx who had caused the disturbance had already been deposited on the lower branch before it snapped back up. Her eyes flicked to and fro, scanning the door before her. Her nostrils flared softly as she took in the recent, and very strange, scents. There was definitely a new human. Her eyes dilated momentarily as she zoned out, her thoughts completely shifting to such a long time ago. It's happening again. That scent... it's familiar. But I can't place my finger on it. It's been too long....

They've moved on. That bloody Black Rose. Such a pain, must she do these things? A smirk twisted her lips, and she jumped onto the next tree, following the much fresher scents of the human male and the Rose. May made quick work of the distances, and she rested along a top branch her eyes boring into the blond one's head. A wicked smile cascaded onto her visible features, and she silently slithered down the tree, making sure to keep her scents in check, and her ownself behind leaves. But, there was another boy? Her eyes narrowed. Oh wonderful, the Purple Rose's little slave. At least he's- Ope, nope, there he goes, falling over himself again. She tilted her head, her ear flicking silently as she watched his pathetic flailing.

Maycenna hopped down onto the grass, immediately approaching the boy, her ears back gently, and her claws half out. "So it is you." Her voice was soft and easy flowing, her eyes scanning over the back of his blonde head, waiting for him to turn and make eye contact. One claw dug into the earth momentarily, and she sat down, her eyes widening, yet hidden. That's where it's from. What are the odds? "Let's play a game, little human. You'll like what I have to offer, I promise."

Kuro rose from where she was kneeling beside the river and scanned the trees. Itami was right. There was somebody out there and she could tell from the smell that it was human. She only spotted the dark-haired man for a moment before she heard him call out 'maybe another time' and then run off into the trees. With the sound of crushing leaves and a few breaking twigs, it was easy to tell that the man had fallen down. With a light sigh, she started walking towards the trees where the sound had came from. She wasn't too worried about him but if by any chance word got out that she had a contractor, she'd have some problems. If the man had seen the rose on either her or Itami's hand, she'd had to get rid of him. Just before she reached the tree line, she heard a voice behind her. Turning, she took a couple of quick steps forward and grabbed the collar of Itami's shirt and pulled him backward onto the ground beside him. She reached her left hand over her shoulder and, unsheathing her sword, pointed in in the direction of the sphinx sitting in the grass. "This little human belongs to me." she said stiffly, her gold eyes glaring. "I know he looks stupid but that's why I'm here. We aren't interested. Why is a stray sphinx out wandering around in this part of the forest any who?" Kuro asked, her tone of voice clearly cross. Though she was still worried about the human from before, the sphinx was a little more to her concern. So annoying...his blood must be pretty strong smelling if a sphinx is interested. Then again he does have that helpless look to him. No doubt he would easily get caught up in such a tricky creatures silver tongue. Even so, it was still rather suspicious this sphinx would come out of nowhere with an offer straight for Itami. Something wasn't right about this situation. There was also the faint smell of blood in the air but Kuro brushed it off.

"Hey wait a minute you don't have to go!" Itami called out as the person in the trees turned and ran, only to hear the sound of him falling. He watched as Kuro stood up and began walking towards the trees. He hoped she wasn't going to do anything to harm the person. He had barely spent anytime with her but she was already really intimidating. "Let's play a game, little human. You'll like what I have to offer, I promise." He turned around at the sound of another voice and his eyes widened a little at the sight a few feet away from him where an animal was sitting in the grass. Though, he couldn't really tell if it was an animal or a human. He was a little dumbfounded at first, wondering if the creature had really just talked to him or if he had imagined it and it was about to turn him into its next meal. "Wh-What?" He managed to stamper just before he felt a rough tug on the back of his shirt and he fell back onto the grass with a loud hmph!

It took him a moment to regain himself and he sat up from where he was laying beside Kuro and rubbed the back of his head. When she finished talking to the creature in front of them he looked up at her. "What the hell was that for!" he growled, not bothering to pick himself back up off the ground in fear that Kuro would probably just knock him back down anyway. He turned his eyes back on the creature in front of them. A sphinx? Like in those weird mythical stories? he thought to himself as he looked at the creature. Now that he got a better look at it, it seemed to have a female face, yet, the body of a lion. It also had a pair of feathery wings and ears on the top of its head. The girls face, he had to admit, was rather attractive but the body was really strange to him. "Kuro who is that?" He questioned, though keeping his eyes on the sphinx. All thoughts of the person in the forest from earlier simply left his train of thought.

The Sphinx bared her fangs at the Rose. She had left her mask on the tree branch in order to not set off anything. "You know better than to mess in the affairs of the Sphinxes. It's obvious that the boy is yours, Rose. But I have some information that will actually answer some of his questions. I'm making a proposal, boy. It's a simple game we will play, very fun." Albeit, Maycenna despised to go without her mask, but it would be worth it for Mira. "Besides, I wonder how much the boy likes you, Rose."

She stretched out, her eyes flashing up and locking with the boy's. She smirked prettily, her ear flicking. "Do you accept my proposal, or do you not? I have the answers to some of your most important questions. You need not worry about the outcome. It's mostly win win. It will be an easy game, I promise~" Her head tilted to the side, but her eyes remained with the boys. It was important to keep it, besides, humans usually had a hard time breaking the gaze between a Sphinx when they begin their riddles. It was an old magic to ensure that there would be no outside complications when the game began. However, there was always the point, if said prey got the answer wrong, when the shift begins for the smaller Sphinxes, that the outside forces can defend. She smiled, her lips turning up faintly and smoothing out attractively. The dim light caught the sea-green flecks of her eyes, the orbs flashing once more. "It'll be fun, don't worry!" The feline closed her eyes in another smile, her tail curling cutely along the dead grass. Maycenna eagerly began to paw at the grass in front of her, acting much like a small kitten.

As the sphinx spoke to Kuro he let out a small sigh and picked himself back up off the ground, figuring that there wouldn't be much point for the vampire to push him back down anyway. Plus, she was a little occupied at the moment and didn't look like she was much enjoying the sphinxes company. This made Itami a little nervous too, but something about the lioness in front of him made him want to trust her and go with her instead of staying with Kuro. She seemed much more friendly anyway. Itami;s eyes moved from the sphinx to Kuro's face. She was glaring at the animal/human with her sword at the ready. The hostility she was giving off even made him want to take a couple of steps back so if she did decide to attack he wouldn't be in the way of her swinging blade.

"Do you accept my proposal, or do you not? I have the answers to some of your most important questions. You need not worry about the outcome. It's mostly win win. It will be an easy game, I promise. It'll be fun, don't worry!" Itami looked back at the sphinx, a little confused at how he should answer. The part where she said that she had the answer to some of his questions was really tempting, but the game thing, he had to admit, sounded a little suspicious. Still, the only thing he could think of right now was finding a way to get home. He glanced down at the ground for a moment, hesitating, before clutching his hands into fists and taking a step forward so that he was standing a little bit close than Kuro. "What's the game?" He asked the sphinx curiously, completely ignoring the suspicious feeling he was getting.

The feline then spread her form along the grass, stretching before coming into a position on her stomach, laying down. She tucked her paws under her chest, and then smiled back up at the boy, her tail curling around her haunches. "The game is quite fun and pretty simple! All you have to do is answer a riddle. Every right response, I answer any question you have to the best of my ability. And, being a sphinx, my knowledge is very well off. Now, the riddles will start off extremely easy, then they will progressively get harder. Supposedly anyway, it depends on my mood, of course!"

Maycenna tilted her head to the side. "But, if you get any wrong... then I'll probably have to eat you." She smiled cheerfully at him. "Just kidding! I'm sure you're a super smart kid, much like your-... well, I'm sure you're very smart!" Her ear flicked, and she locked eyes with him once more. "There will be five to ten riddles, the last most likely having the response as answer to something that will reveal a lot more about me and my knowledge. So, what do you say? Want to play with me?" Her tone was very easy-going and childlike, eager to play a game with this boy and enjoy herself. The only problem was really the Black Rose staring her down, but she ignored her.

A bright smile spread across Itami's face and he gave a small chuckle. "Riddles huh? Sounds kind of fun!", he exclaimed, relaxing a little as he plopped down into the grass sitting Indian style. Like my what.. the boy thought to himself as he went over what the Sphinx had told him. "If you really do have the answers I'm looking for, then sure, I'll play along." he said casually with a smile. He was happy that at least someone in this dull world was nice and not confusing. Well, the sphinx was a little confusing but at least she was friendly. Apart from his so called 'contractor' and the random person earlier who just ran off and might even still be laying on the forest ground not too far off behind him, the sphinx seemed to be the only one who seemed to know what smiling was and knew how to talk to him right. "I am a little curious though. If you aren't going to eat me, what does happen if I happen to guess a riddle wrong? oh! that's right I didn't ask what your name was!" Itami said quickly leaning back a tiny bit and supporting himself with his hands behind him in the grass. "I'm Itami and the rude one is Kuro." He said, instantly regretting calling Kuro rude.

"I know who the Rose is boy." May smiled once more, her gaze keeping with his intently. "Now for our first riddle. If I say 'Everything I tell you is a lie,' am I telling you the truth or a lie?" The sphinx splayed one paw over the other, a pretty smirk on her face as her ear twitched. "Five to ten riddles, if you get one wrong, we start over. The riddles will get harder and harder. Oh, and Kuro cannot interfere." Now a wicked smirk cascaded onto her face, her eyes remaining on Itami. "My name must remain a secret for now. Though I shall probably give you a riddle with the answer to my nickname." A wind blew through the surrounding trees, causing them to creak and groan. "It's truly a shame that it's so dull and boring here."
