"How much does this job pay?"

0 · 270 views · located in Earth, somewhere in 2913 A.D.

a character in “Shadows of the Ruined World”, as played by freemixer25

Description

Name: Caleb

Race: Cambion (half human half demon)

Gender: Male

Age: 25

Appearance: Image

Description: Caleb is very tall at 6'9" with short silver hair and golden eyes. He always wears a crystal he found on his Grandmothers corpse after she was skilled. He likes to wear white clothing with black underneath. He has a Tattoo of his Demon clan on his right shoulder reaching down to his wrist.

Equipment: A Sword forged from steel with ground demon claws making it incredibly sharp and strong. He also carries a high caliber revolver in a black holster on his thigh with a curved blade coming out from beneath the barrel and extends for about 6 inches with a slightly serrated edge.

Personality: Caleb is silent and clever, but that doesn't mean he isn't nice and it also doesn't mean he cant be downright mean. Caleb isn't afraid to tell someone exactly how he feels about them and when he does he means what he says. He doesn't like people knowing he is half demon but at times it can be hard to hide. Because of his heritage he is very confused as to what he should consider himself. At times he thinks he's human, others he knows he's a demon.

History: Caleb never knew his father because of the circumstance of how he was conceived. His mother was raped by a Demon who lusted after his Mother after she made him feel a completely foreign emotion, love. His Mother was able to escape although the damage had been done. Even though he wasn't born from true love his mother decided to keep him instead of abandoning him. Being raised by his Mother, with help from her Mother were able to keep the truth from everyone in their little village far from the large human settlement, and far from help.

One night, his village was attacked lead by the demon that ravaged his Mother. It was a night of slaughter as the village was torn apart by his Demon Father and a horde of other Demons along for the fun. Caleb, his Mother and Grandmother slipped out of the village in the midst of the chaos and ran for the nearby forest but they were never safe because Caleb's Father followed them out of the village and into the forest. Soon the Demon caught up with them and expressed how he hated Caleb's Mother for making him feel the way he did, for making him weak. Caleb watched as the Demon tore apart his only family, and it made Caleb angry. The demonic energy in the air and Caleb's anger awakened something in him, his demonic powers.

His Father was able to sense him because of his awakened energy and was able to stop an attack by Caleb by grabbing his wrist which had grown sharp claws. After coming into physical contact a tattoo began to spread across Caleb's arm similar to the one on the Demons arm, that is when the Demon learned that Caleb is his son. The Demon was once again conflicted by human emotion and hesitated long enough for Caleb to gather demonic power in his other hand that he slammed into the demon, puncturing his chest. The demon whispered "My Son." before falling the ground. Caleb checks his Mother and Grandmother only to find his Grandma was barely alive and gave him her necklace, saying that it has been passed down in her family and that it would have gone to his mother before him. Before she passed from her injuries she tells him to not hate who he is for he was the best little child she knew. He was not able to bury his family as the demons in the village began to make their way for the forest, causing Caleb to flee with a broken heart.

After living on his own for 13 years, being shunned from villages when they learned of what he was. He became a skilled swordsmen for having to fight many demons that hunted him down he now sells his skills for the highest bidder.

Other: Caleb has a soft spot for animals.

Caleb makes his way back into the town where his client lives, they have decided to meet in the local pub where the man visits nightly. The job was that Caleb had to hunt down a group of bandits that had stolen from the very successful merchant. The job had taken much longer then what the merchant wanted, but the group of bandits were vampires and he had lost their trails a number of times but the three nights before he got lucky as he caught them asleep in a cave one day.

Caleb made his way to the tavern and scanned the crowd for the merchant who was sitting at the bar with three women clinging too him. Caleb walked over to the man and when he was finally noticed the women were ushered away and Caleb took the seat next to the man. A moment of nothing being said passed before the man said "You are late, i hope you have a good reason." Without looking at Caleb. "You failed to mention the bandits were also vampires, my price has gone up by 500 dollars." Said Caleb in a clam voice making the man laugh. "Five hundred dollars? You wont even get our agreed upon amount. I never intended to pay you anyway." With a snap the four women who had surrounded the man pulled out long, curved knives. "Someone put a high price for you, i can make a nice profit off of your death."

The women all rushed Caleb, who still hadn't moved from his seat. When the first girl got close Caleb shed his cloak and blinded her before swiftly getting up from his chair and grabbing the woman by the head and slamming her into the bar hard enough to knock her out. He retrieved his cloak from underneath the women and wrapped it around the hands of the next assassin, tying them together. Caleb then picked up a partially full beer bottle and smashed it over her head causing her to crumple to the ground. The last two assassins rushed him from both sides and he back flips into the air and cracks their heads together. After taking care of the assassins he turns to the man still sitting at the bar, dumbstruck as Caleb walked over and took the large wallet from his coat pocket and counted out his payment plus the five hundred and the rest he gives to the shocked bartender. "For the damages." He picks the merchant up by his shirt. "Don't even think of trying to come after me, next time you wont just lose what money you had on your person." Caleb shoved the man towards the door and he runs out without looking back. A few cheers erupt around the bar for the entertainment and Caleb took his seat at the bar and paid for a small meal.

Raven saw the oncoming fighting done by the strange man in a black cloak fight against several assassins. She smiled as she observed his skill and pondered about how his abilities in combat would best suit her needs. She observed the unconscious human females on the ground and noted that one of them had a more serious injury and may not survive but she didn't care.

For the moment her attention was on the man who unwittingly took the seat next to her. She slowly drank her drink and looked at the mirror that was behind a shelf behind the bartender and prepared herself accordingly through make up and smiled when it was what she thought would be her liking.

She then turned to face this interesting individual who may be just what she was looking for. "Well. A man with strong arms and good mobility skills would be able to take down three highly skilled assassins." She said, letting the last word come out in a purr. "I could use someone like you."

"You see," Raven stated. "I am on my way to a very important meeting. Even though I can fully take care of myself, I feel the need of an extra person to look behind me to make sure there's no trouble." As she said this she pulled a sack from one of her pouches. "This is a small down payment for a much, much larger reward which will be given to you, provided we reach the meeting place and leave there very much alive. What do you say tough guy, interested?"

-----

When Jonathan was finished ringing the bell and was walking back to the chapel, he heard the main doors closing. He walked steadily towards the room and walked down the large walkway towards the door. He was certain he wasn't alone, his long peace had at long last been disturbed.

It was then he saw her. She wasn't human that much was for certain. He also heard her mention something about looking like a woman she once knew. Could she mean his mother? Impossible, he never heard of any of his mother's peers from his father. Although, his father didn't want the vampire influence to cloud his judgement of the world.

He didn't answer right away at whether or not he would speak to her. He simply turned to the side, so that his left shoulder would show her the mark of the dhampir tattooed upon it. He then turned to look at the small woman yet again as he slowly sighed. "Who are you, and what do you want from me?" he asked. "Why have you come here to disturb my silent and lonely existence? More importantly, how did you know my name?"

Caleb begins to dig in to his food when not even three seconds after his first bite a women begins to talk to him, complementing his skills in fighting and trying to charm him. He listens to what she has to say in silence and when she was done talking he looks at her out of the corner of his eye and looks at the coin purse. He looks at her for a few moments in silence and after studying her says "My price for helping Demons are steep, that down payment wouldn't even cover a quarter of the cost." He turns back to the person behind the bar and pays for his meal. "Also, it was four assassins, not three."

The assassin whose hands are still bound by his cloak begins to stir and he lifts her up and takes his cloak back from around her wrist and puts it on in one movement. "This is your only chance, leave now and don't try anything." The Girl stares at him and nods before turning around and heading for the door when she picks up a knife from a table, but before she can even turn around Caleb swiftly draws his revolver and shoots her in the back. He spins the still smoking gun and replaces it in it's holster. "I warned her." He begins to walk towards the exit.

"I never said I was a demon, you have sharp skills indeed sir." Raven stated to the cloaked man as she saw him wrap up a final bit of business. It was not until he was starting to walk out that she realized her offer was initially denied. "Hey wait a minute you little pain in the butt! The Down payment may not be good to you now! But- Oh now he's got me to chase after him." She angrily mutters as she got up and tipped the bartender and follow him.

"The mission is a very serious one, it'll delegate the future of the world as we know it! Please just hear me out!" She said in an almost angry shouting voice before slowly trying to calm herself down and lower her voice to a whisper. "Besides, the total payment is around five million dollars in gold if you help me out. All you gotta do is help me with this vital mission, travel with me and watch my back, and ensure I get there, go through the meeting, and then back home alive, and you get your gold. Understand?"

---

Jonathan watched as the Vampire called Chou sat down on an old chair and explain thoroughly how she knew his name and more importantly how she knew he was a dhampir. He had thought his mother left because she was afraid of what he may become in the future, what she's saying sounded like she was afraid for the consequences of being what he is and how it would affect him. Chou even stated that his mother wouldn't have wanted him to live isolated from the rest of the world.

He didn't change his expression, but inside his heart was beating fast as all his restrained emotions bubbled up. Chou then spoke of a mission, a mission that seemed like a hotly debatable one. One that would bring peace to this world, or destruction. It was then that Chou stated that's why she needed him. Apparently some members of this council she said that kept tabs on him disapproved of the whole thing and may send killers after her.

Jonathan's hands tightened to clenched fists, he wanted to yell at her, to tell her to find someone else, to make her leave him alone. But for some reason he couldn't. There was something about her that seemed to draw him towards her, like an invisible thread that pulled against him. He had no way of fighting against this pull for long.

"If you want me to come, then I will come. But I'm doing this because it seems my mother asked you to ask me. Also," He said as he looked at the Vampire directly at her. "I'm doing it for them." He finished, his meaning obvious, he'd do it to fulfill his father's promise to ensure humanity survives a little longer.

"When do we leave?"

Caleb ignored her angry shouting as he walked out of the bar and onto the street. He was about to slip into the crowd when she ran out yelling about how her job could change the future of our world, he's heard this a thousand times before, and every one of those times ended in failure.

Her angry shout to listen to her makes him stop and listen as she says just how much the job pays. He turns around, now clearly interested. "Five million?" He asks, with that much money he could do almost anything, go anywhere. "I will take the job but if it turns out that this actually is a plot to hurt the humans, i wont hesitate cutting your throat." Although he will take jobs from anyone, he is careful with jobs from Demons.

He accepted. That was good enough for Raven for the time being. her face however turned to a very angry one when he said he'd kill her if this was all a plot to kill the humans. "Kill humans? Me? I'm not the kind of demon you know sir. I come from a part of the world where demons understand humanity's place in the world and are scared of what'll happen if they all ended up killed off or something."

Raven sighed, knowing that it might not get through his brain completely. "My Society is kind of dwindling in the numbers, why else would they stay in Japan and hold the fort down?" she thought to herself before sighing again. "Anyway, we'll each get our seperate supplies we need for the journey and meet on the outskirts of town at dusk tonight. We got a long journey ahead of us and so little time to get there, I assume."

---

Jonathan froze as Chou asked if she should let his mother know how he is. He only sighed and simply stated. "As you wish." He then waited for her to leave. He had preparations to do before the morrow's journey, he had to get right on it immediately.

Next day, at dusk

Jonathan rang the Bell for the last time. He knew that when the sun started to set, he'd leave the safety of the monastery forever. It frightened him, yet it also relieved him. His father gave him a sword for a reason, and staying here wouldn't make it much use. He smiled silently as he knew this would be an ample opportunity.

He finished the ringing of the bell and picked up a bag that contained several things he carried with him when he left home, a bedroll, essential supplies, etc. He then made his way towards the main doors of the monastery to go through them. Before he opened the doors, however, he turned his head towards the altar of the monastery, and muttered a silent prayer of guidance and wisdom, before finally opening the doors, and exiting the building, hoping that Chou would meet him outside.

Caleb snorts in response to her statement of belonging to a group of demons that cared about humanity. "Demons that care about humanity is like Humans that care about ants, there are none. We don't think twice when we step on ants, the same way Demons don't think twice about how to terrorize Humans." Even though she doesn't seem malicious, all demons are masters of deception. But five millions dollars is a lot of money, and in Caleb's eyes worth the risk of accompanying her. Caleb did not have much to bring because he just came back from a long mission, but decided to let the Demon get her stuff together. Caleb walks away. "I'll meet you on the outskirts then." He says over his shoulder to the Demon.

Although Caleb had most of his traveling gear on him from his last job, he still needed to buy some more bullets for his revolver. He makes his way towards the Metal smith where he makes his purchase and tucks the metal into an ammo belt around his waist for easy access. After his purchase he makes his way towards the outskirts of the town where he sits and waits for the Demon to make her way to the only gate in the village. As he waits he watches little children running around in the field just outside the gate carrying wooden swords and play fighting each other and imaginary demons. He watches them until the sun begins to set and they are called back within the city gate, smiling at their care free laughter.

Raven sighed as she walked back to the Inn to get her personal items, mainly her weapons and supplies given to her before she left her home in Japan. She knew that any human would laugh off the fact there are demons who want humanity to survive. What can she do but take it? She can't convince them so she just ignores them. But she decided that one day, she'll learn something about her new companion and ridicule him for it, just for payback.

After getting her personal items she went to the market to get at least three weeks worth of food and supplies. That should cover them until they needed to hunt any local creatures on the way. She then made her way towards her newfound companion who was waiting at the gate. "Let's go, If we stay too long it's only a matter of time before those idiots who serve that so called 'demon lord' find me." She stated before looking at her bodyguard straight in the face. "This isn't the part where you ask questions or make snide remarks about this all being some sort of set up, you watch my back, I watch yours. Because if I don't make it, and I hope the other representatives make it too, the future that those children will see will be the imaginary game they're playing. Only worse."

Raven started walking away from the gate and out onto the open road. "Let's go Mr. Wanted Man."

---

Jonathan nodded his head in understanding of the dangers involved and started to walk in front of Chou, and that's the way their travel together started.

---

After a few hours of walking, Jonathan turned to Chou with a questioned look and sighed before asking very plainly, "So," he said, "What is my mother like? I haven't seen her since I was, what, a child or something, barely a year old. Is she still the kind woman I imagine her to be?" It wasn't a random question, it was a question in an effort to get to know his mother from another's perspective, and through that question, he'd learn a bit more about Chou if she said anything about her life and if his mother affected it.

Caleb looks at the kids, thinking about what she said if she doesn't make it to...where ever she needs to go. He stands up and silently follows her out onto the gate closes behind them for the night.

As he walks behind her he begins to think about if this really was a big fat lie. If it was he would complete it, get the payment, then slay every single demon that was part of it and hers would be the most painful. He begins to think what he would do with five million, he could even start his own town, or fix a village but he would most likely find somewhere away from it all.

He begins to watch his demonic employer, watching how she walks, silent and graceful. "What are you hiding demon? I hope you understand i am not one that is easily cheated." He thinks to himself.

After a few hours of walking he becomes aware of sounds in the forest around them, twigs snapping and muffled crunches of leaves, silent enough to where if you weren't listening you wouldn't hear them. At first he shrugs it off as animals but when they continue, he glances at the forest from the corner of his eye and spots a shadow slide behind a tree. They were being followed. He doesn't tell the demon, thinking he could surprise them when they tried to jump them. About after thirty minutes of walking in continued silence the stalkers make their move.

One person jumps out of the tree above the Demon and begins to plummet towards her. With lightning quick speed, Caleb draws his revolver and unloads into the man, the man falls next to the female demon. Caleb's nose wrinkles when he smells the blood of the fallen man. "Vampires." He says as he reloads his gun. He walks over the figure lying on the ground and takes out a sword that was hidden by his cloak, the design of the hilt is simple with black and white snakes wrapping around it. The pommel of the sword is a claw griping a chain that is about six inches long. The cross guard are straight and ending with an upward curve. The blade is about four feet long with a dim silver glow. The tip the blade flares out slightly, making the tip wider then the rest of the blade with the parts that extend out curving sharply downward.

He stabs the man in the chest to ensure that the Vampire is dead right as three more burst out of the bushes around them two flanking them and one behind. "You really thought, that after what you did, we would let you go?" Says a Vampire that drops silently to the ground in front of them. "After you killed ten of us?" The Vampire tilts his head slightly at the question. "I took out ten of you, do you honestly think four of you can stop me?" He walks forward a little and twirls his sword. "You must not be very smart."

"You kill us and you insult us. I don't plan on making your death quick anymore." Says the lead vampire with a hiss. The Vampire behind them cocks his weapon and Caleb spins around to shoot the gun out of his hand and pulls out his sword as the one vampire on his left charges. Caleb slices with his sword, catching the Vampire in the shoulder causing it to stumble back and Caleb follows up with a stab to the heart. The Vampire behind them has retrieved his gun and Caleb move the impaled Vampire in between him and the other Vampire as he begins to shoot, using the dead vampire as a shield. He pulls out his revolver again and shoots the Vampire on the right two times in the heart. "Two down Vampire! You still feeling confidant?" With the dead Vampire still hanging on his sword, he charges the one Vampire with the gun and impales it with its brethren.

Caleb viciously yanks his sword to the side, cutting through the flesh of the impaled Vampires. He turns around and walks towards the last Vampire who backs up. "What are you? No Human can take down so many Vampires by himself!" The Vampire says, the fear in his voice causing it to raise an octave. "You so sure Humans can take out Vampires? Are you that egotistical? Human are the ones that make the Impossible possible because they never give up, and it would serve your kind well to recognize that." The Vampire falls backward as Caleb gets closer and he spots an exposed part of Caleb's arm where a bullet took away some of the clothing. "You are Cambion..." The Vampire couldn't get anymore out before he is stabbed in the chest.

Caleb wipes the blood off his sword on the dead Vampires clothes, when clean he stands back up. "I hope you don't mind not getting any of the action." He says as he wraps his exposed arm with white cloth. "But if my job is to protect you, then i guess you can understand." He tucks his sword back into his cloak and reloads his Revolver. "Lets keep moving." He begins to walk down the path once again.

"Wow. It's rare enough to see a half breed." Raven complimented, hand at her sword and remaining slightly alert. "I always wondered how many Cambion wander the earth thanks to that faction of barbarians near Budapest and Moscow."

She chuckled at her own joke as she followed this man further down the road. "I should probably introduce myself. I am Raven Michealis. The fact of this mission is crucial because of this meeting. One of each major civilization on this world today will meet and discuss boundaries across all lands to give humans some stability and not make the Vampires and the Demons squabble over territories." She stated. "It's a few steps closer to peace, if all goes well. But the other demons of my society think I'd be slain before I get there... along with the other two. That's why each of us had to get bodyguards. Dunno the other guys but I could handle some situations myself. You're just someone to watch my back in a scrap. But now that I know what you are makes me, intrigued, tell me, what demon spread your mother's legs to spawn you?"

---

Jonathan pondered about the things that were said to him. Chou describing his mother to him, almost sounded just about the same as his father told him in the past except for one detail that bugged him constantly. He kept walking down throughout the dark night lit path that seemed to lead to an abandoned cabin. The cabin seemed remote with another path leading to a village. "Is it true she freed my father from slavery? I saw a remnant of a chain hiding in his bedroom closet the day he gave me my sword. When I asked him about it he just said that was the action that made him fall for her." he said.

He approached the cabin and approached the door, he opened it and inspected the insides of it very carefully. It's one window still had it's curtains, which made it easy for when the sun came up to close them. a suitable place for Chou to rest for the day. "I think it's safe to pass the daytime here for the night." He stated.

Caleb ignores the comment about the half breeds and continues walking, only half listening. Why must she talk? Caleb thinks. She could end up attracting more vampires especially if they hear how seemingly important she is. he thought. Caleb truthfully wasn't interested in what they planned to accomplish from the gathering. He knows that Vampires and Demons will take whatever they want, no matter what rules or boundaries are in place. He continues to ignore Raven but can't help but turn around and face her when she asks about what Demon had his way with his Mother.

"Do not say anything about the Demon and what he did to my Mother so casually." He says to her. "It doesn't matter anyway because that filth is dead...."He was about to say more on the subject but decided to not further the conversation. "You are also on a mission that will not work, Demons aren't known for keeping their words and Vampires are parasites who think too highly of themselves to follow any agreements." He turns back around and continues to walk. "We have a long way to go, we'll rest at the next town."

Raven stopped in her tracks when Caleb said that the mission won't even work, the meeting wouldn't be good at all. The insults he gave on demons and vampires, whilst he left out the humans entirely. It both hurt and insulted her to think that her companion feels that humans are not flawed people.

"Humans are flawed too, we all are." She stated in a soft, yet forced emotionless tone, she would not allow herself to cry in front of him. Until he earned her respect and also she with him, she won't let the burden of the whole mission she has in store entirely on her shoulders show. Besides, she knew that most likely the other two representatives have it rough as well.

She continued to follow him to whatever town the road ends up in.

---

Jonathan stiffened at the fact he was asked about his life. He watched as Chou took off her cloak and loosed her hair from it's state, watching it fall down her back and onto the floor in a flood of black. She looked almost like a beautiful statue of a woman. He closed the door and sighed. Where should he begin, or even say to her about his life? He remembers most of the first few years of his life, but the parts she was interested in were more painful.

"I lived with my father till I was eighteen years of age. Then he gave me a sword, and told me to go out into the world to live my life the way I wanted to be." He stated. "Then, until I was twenty nine, I wandered the world aimlessly, not knowing my purpose for existing. Why? Because I am a dhampir, I can't have a normal human life. Not allowed. For a time I was a bounty hunter killing wanted people for money. Also during that time I tried to find and experience love every chance I got, but every woman I encountered, once they saw my true nature, ran."

He sighed. "I found the monastery at twenty nine. I decided that, if neither human or vampire, even a loving and caring woman on either side of those spectrum, would not accept me for what and who I was," Jonathan closed his eyes whilst shaking his head. "Then I would isolate myself and be left alone. I've been living there till now."

Jonathan opened his eyes again and stretched his arms. "When it gets to daytime I'll see about trying to get some nourishment for the both of us."

"I never said Humans didn't have flaws, they are painfully obvious." He says over his shoulder without breaking stride. "The way they turn on each other when it benefits them, the way they look upon an orphan who has a strange.... Never mind, lets just go." Why did he say so much that was private? Yeah, he didn't out right say it was him but anyone with a brain could figure out who the orphan was. After another half hour of walking they came up to a small town without a walled defense. A little discouraged at the lack of a defense but he was hasn't had a decent nights sleep in over a week and decided here would be a good resting point. "We can rest here for the night. We will rent rooms right next to each other that way if anything happens i will hear it." He walks into the little town towards the Tavern.

When he walks into the tavern he scans the room and notices that the only persons in there is an old man and the tavern keeper. Caleb walks ups to the inn keeper. "I need two rooms, right next to each other." The man looks up and regards Caleb for a moment before saying "It's not like many patrons are visiting, two rooms up stairs on the left for 25 dollars." Caleb fishes out the money and places it on the counter and takes the two keys handed to him. When Caleb turns and walks towards Raven the old man speaks. "Although why you would want to rest here, i will never know. This town is cursed." Caleb shrugs off the old mans words and hands Raven her key when the old man speaks again. "Demons have come with increasing frequency, taking our children in the dark of night." Caleb sighs. "I'm sorry to hear that, we are just passing through." He says to the old man and he turns to Raven. "Lets get rested up, i want to continue at day light."

Raven took the key she was given by the innkeeper of the place she and Caleb were going to rest in for the night, she was about to go upstairs until she stopped, hearing the Old Man speaking about demons stealing children from their beds at the dead of night. Her face turned into one of immediate rage and anger. How can she not afford to ignore such a heinous deed that seems to repeat itself?

When Caleb told her that they were going to rest she gripped his shoulder hard. "How can you ignore that? Huh? It's a despicable act!" She stated sharply. "I don't care if you want to go and sleep for all I care, but whether or not you come with me, I'm looking in on this village's demon trouble! I won't sit by whilst innocent lives are just stolen from their families noses!"

She felt like saying more in her rage, but she looked around to see a lot of people staring at the two of them, fully realizing that further anger might bring out her demonic traits, which would lead to an even bigger problem. "They'd think I'm the one stealing the children if I go all out." She thought as she shook her head at her companion.

She let go of his shoulder as her seething rage faded. "But, if you don't care that's fine too. But I won't let the demons have their way." As she said this she slowly walked to the door leading outside the inn, slowly drawing out her ninjato sword as she walked out through the door.

---

Jonathan sighed as he thought over what Chou said. He only walked to the window and closed the curtains and rested near the door and sleep for the few hours in the night that were left.

....

Jonathan awoke to the sound of birds chirping. He got up and walked out the door closing it as he got out and headed towards the town to pick up food for him and then hunt several large animals to drain for blood, he had several empty bottles to store it in. He had to hurry and be quick about most of it too. If Chou had enemies they'd probably want to attack her whilst she rested during the daytime.

He walked through the streets of the town quietly, without talking to a lot of people, and went into the store and bought several supplies needed to make a month's worth of food, along with several more empty bottles. He paid and left the village as he took the supplies meant for his satisfaction of hunger and walked into the woods and performed his hunting skills.

...

He managed to kill a large moose and a bear, and got as much blood in several bottles as he could before heading back to the cabin. Right as he was about to go in there, he felt a large pull on the back of his shirt sending him towards the ground and seeing a human as the source of it with a wicked looking sword with several runes upon it.

"It's been awhile hasn't it, Son of Death?" The human stated. "I heard you took on an interesting job. I also heard that the employer I have now hates your client at the moment and wishes for her immediate demise. Why not move outta the way Jonny-boy?"

"Get out of here now Blade of the Seeker." Jonathan stated to the human fully, "My bounty hunting days are over, you saw to that the last job I had."

"Oh yes didn't I?" The bounty hunter snickered, before he sliced through the air at Jonathan's face. The Dhampir dodged and pulled out his own sword to combat this former comrade in the Hunt. The two fought each other for several minutes, through slices and parries and thrusts that almost hit their marks, one of the cuts managed to hit Jonathan in the side of his stomach.

"This almost feels similar to what happened when I killed her I think." The Blade stated in an amused chuckle. "I remember that's what set you off Jonny-boy. But I doubt you even loved her. For a Dhampir, your wishes to be a human will never come to light. You're no warrior. So just give it u-ggh!" The statement was interrupted as Jonathan sliced into his abdomen and then a well aimed stab in the shoulder.

"You always talked too much Blade. Maybe the next time we meet, your employer might have turned you in order to help get you back on our trail. Now leave." He watched as the Blade of the Seeker walked away, gripping his side as he sheathed his sword and picked up the bags of food and the sack of bottles filled with blood before walking back into the Cabin.

"Chou, Im back." He stated, closing the door behind him.

Caleb grimaces when she grabs his shoulder so tightly. "Ow! Geeze woman! You look like a girl but you have the grip of a man!" He says before sighing when he hears that she is going to help the town with they're problems."I can ignore it because it always happens. You kill these demons more will eventually take the place of the old ones." He yells after her as she walks out of the bar. "Why do it when there is nothing in it for us?" He mutters under his. He begins to walk up the stairs but stops half way up them. "Oh for the..." He turns around and stomps out of the Tavern and walks up next to her. "Whose to say they will even show up tonight?"

"Not too deep." Jonathan stated as he took of his vest and then his shirt to let Chou have a better look at the wound. "And he's not a friend. Competitor, yes. Bounty hunters never acknowledge friends."

He then went for one of his packs to get medicine out of it. "He's not even a friend to me. He took something precious away from me." He said calmly, his voice thick with emotional restraint. "It was the day I gave up on bounty hunting. It was also the day I isolated myself from the world." He sighed as he pulled out some type of medicine bag as he started to administer it on his wound, which seemed to be nothing compared to some of the wounds on his back that have now faded away to mere scars.

"It was an occupational hazard to get battle scars." He stated with a soft chuckle.

----

"Good." Raven said. "I know where they might roost in an area such as this. Just follow my lead." as she stated this she wandered through the empty streets and alleys.

"We probably will find them soon if we work fast and work hard." She stated as she started to pick up the scent of one of a demon. "Hmm, it seems to be a hunter type. Best stick together."

Caleb sighs as she tells him to follow her. Her seemingly random wondering makes him question her. "Do you even know what too look for? We've going in and out of alley ways for the past ten minutes." He says before she says that we will find them by working fast and hard. The next thing she says makes him stop in his tracks. "Hunter Demons wont go for two people who look like they can fight, they're too smart. We are better off finding someplace to sit and wait then make our move when they do. Have you ever hunted your own kind before?" He asks with a questioning tone." Besides they are going after children, not adults." He thinks for a moment "Okay here is what we should do, we will follow them but not engage until they start to leave the village, there may be more and it will lead us to the rest of them, then they wont bother this village again." He says. "It will be tricky we'll have to move fast but its the best way to ensure they all die."

"Who she was no longer matters. She's dead and it was my fault. I was too lost in my own pursuit of love," Jonathan stated with a sigh. "I forgot to warn her of my bounty hunting ways."

He waited for Chou to be finished before putting on his black shirt with the dhampir mark on the back of it laced in white. "The Blade of the seeker found out that little affair and used it to blackmail me to not get important bounties on my list. Sooner or later, she found out about the whole thing and confronted the Blade. You don't confront him on anything, unless you want to die."

He closed his eyes bitterly. "He killed her with one strike. I was a fool. I swore then and there to not let my actions affect humanity or the world anymore. That's when I found the church, the monastery. A place where no being, whether vampire or human or demon fight upon."

"Now you know. I isolated myself because I can't find joy in the world." He stated to Chou. "I never will."

---

Raven shook her head at Caleb's question. She never hunted demons, only smelled them and followed her nose and instincts like the demon she was. "Alright, we'll do it your way. You track the demon so that we'll help the people with their problem." She stated, her black ponytail swishing in the winds as it played with said hair.

She just wanted to get the demon and end the village's suffering, she'd seen enough of that in Japan to last her a thousand years.

Caleb nods when she accepts that he take charge. "Good, follow me and be quite." Caleb jumps on top of a crate and scales up to the top of a house. Caleb finds demon hunting easier then hunting vampires. He doesn't understand why but he assumes it has something to do with being a Cambion, it's like he has some kind of telepathy where he can sense which way they are but not an exact location. He looks down at Raven and motions for her to climb up before he stands and walks across the roof in the direction he thinks the demon is in. He leaps across to another roof, the only noise is his cloak rustling in the wind. After a few more jumps and wall climbing he crouches in the shadows atop a three story building.

Caleb closes his eyes and listens. If there is going to be any real clue as to where the demon is, it will be the noise it makes getting to the child and the cry of fear it will make. The only thing to do is wait, and because of how late it is they wont have to wait long. He doesn't open his eyes as he sits there, listening to the sounds of night when the sound of cracking wood and shattering glass fill the air. Caleb's eyes snap open. "Let the chase begin." He climbs down from the building onto houses and runs and jumps across the roofs towards the sound of shouting and pleas for help.

As he turns the corner, he spots the house where the demon struck. The mother of the child is standing in the street crying and being consoled by other woman. Caleb quickly glances around and spots a shadow jump onto a roof then vanish from sight. Without a second look at the woman, Caleb jumps onto the roof and gives chase to the demon. Caleb spots the demon and takes off without waiting for Raven because the demon was moving so fast.

After a rooftop chase, Caleb ends up at the end of the village and he watches as the lizard-esque demon run head for the wilderness and Caleb runs after him, hoping to have it lead it to its friends if it works in a pack so he can kill them all.

Raven observed Caleb quietly as he listened for any signs of the demons that were plaguing the town. She sighed knowing that once one of these demons saw her then something bad will happen. She pushed the idea from her head as she saw Caleb bolt off and had to quickly follow after him before she lost sight of him.

Raven saw the women comforting the one who lost her child. She tried to not look but every ounce of pity welled up in her to simply give a small glance before rushing onto Caleb's trail into the woods. She knew that once there, it'd be a different type of hunting altogether. "Wait for me you crazy boy! You're fast..." She muttered to herself.

---

Jonathan opened the pack and pulled out a bottle of blood and gave it to Chou. "Drink up. It's still fresh. I filled about three bottles worth of blood. The bottles I used are treated for the consumption of blood as to maintain it's freshness for several days. It'll do till I have to hunt again." He stated as he pulled out a bit of meat and chewing on that, wincing from the pain of his wound every now and again.

He mulled over Chou's words and slowly formulated a plan of the next move. "Knowing the Blade, He'll be pondering whether whoever hired him or no should get a report on his first attempt on us. He's a stickler for details on how things can affect his pay. The next town over is several miles and would take us up to three to four hours on horseback if we had horses. doubled that if on foot. if we leave exactly thirty or so minutes after the sun sets, we should get there before dawn and into a hotel."

All the while he pondered about how and where he would try to find joy in the world.

Caleb was on the trail, he wasn't for sure where Raven was but that was of little concern to him right now, he only cared about saving the child and killing the demons. The reptilian demon was quick and agile but years of hunting demons have made Caleb just as fast. The demon, now aware of it's pursuer, lets out a cry and Caleb hears other demons echo it's cry and Caleb sees two shapes that seem to teleport short distances and stop on a branch in a tree high above Caleb.

"Jumpers..? I wasn't expecting to fight them. " He looks at the demon that is getting away. "I don't have time for them!" Caleb looks at the two demons before taking off after the hunter demon. After a few steps one of the teleporting demons appears in front of him and a knife made of dark energy flies out of it's hand and Caleb barely dodges it as it slices his cheek. Caleb jumps back from the demon with a sneer on his face, with a lighting quick move Caleb draws his revolver and fires at the demon who quickly vanishes as it's friend jumps at Caleb from behind, Caleb senses the attack and jumps up and over the demon and tries to shoot it with the same results of the first demon. "Damn you." Caleb lands and looks around for the demons and he hears the whistling sound of a spell flying at him and he dodges it but the other demon takes the advantage to attack and the demons claws rip away the sleeve covering his tattooed arm, tearing his skin and causing him to drop his gun.

Caleb kicks the demon away and it teleports away mid flight, his face contorted into a scowl. The veins on his right arm become pronounced as the tips of his fingers grow into black claws and black scales grow over his hand and partially up his wrist. "You're in my way!" He yells at the demons. He senses another magical attack and without even looking he catches the dark, magical blade in his demonic arm and tightens his grip until it shatters into shards of dark energy. From beneath his robes Caleb draws his sword and leaps with inhuman speed at the spellcasting demon and he impales it on his sword, when he pulls the blade out the demons falls from the tree and fades away before hitting the ground. Caleb senses the other demon appear behind him and spins around and delivers a backhand to the demon causing it to plummet to the ground and it fades away after it's body relaxes.

Caleb looks off in the direction where the hunter demon ran off to and he quickly picks up the trail again and is moving even aster to catch up with it.

Raven had to catch up to Caleb but she was aghast at the sight of the presence of the other demons that he disposed of using his powers. "Oh crap." She muttered, reminding herself not to get on his bad side. She rolls her eyes as she hurries along to catch up to him. "He better not end up getting his butt whopped."

---

Jonathan sighed as he took the bottle and observed the sunset fading away into the darkness. "Let's go then, We got a lot of ground to cover tonight." He stated as he opened the door and bade her to follow before walking, ever knowing she was behind him. He just kept silent and walked for as long as it needed to be.

But his mind was still on that dreadful past he had mentioned to Chou... of the woman he'd never hold in his arms again, and of the fact he never truly met his mother. One day, all of his problems had to be solved somehow.
