Introduction

It all started when a child with 'extraordinary' abilities was born. To be more precise, he was pyrokinetic, which was quickly discovered as he just a few hours after his birth had set a whole hospital on fire. Although he was the first, this boy was far from the last child born with such mutations. Many, many more children with this kind of 'special condition' were to follow. In order to prevent global panic and that the children came to harm, they were taken into custody by the government. Some parents agreed to send their children away to 'safety', but some had their children taken by force.

Everything happened behind the scenes. The general public was never informed about any of this. It was a top-secret operation. Of course, this was all for the safety of humanity. Secluding the children from normal society was for the better. Not only could they pose a danger to normal individuals, but they could also possibly pose a danger to themselves.

Yet, after they were taken away by the government, what happened to these children?

A faze of testing proceeded. A secret project had been created. A new way to range war, an army that would be able to make everyone bend the knee. Children were unmercifully trained into becoming puppets hung up on strings and no one knew what was happening. But cracks soon started to show. Something had gone wrong with the experiment...

Some of the test subjects started to act different, it was like they had been possessed, nothing but bloodlust was left. Everything went wrong, the defaulting subjects massacred everyone that got in their way. Researchers, guards, and even their own comrades. No one could face them as a group so they made their way out from the facility and continued to butcher anyone that got in their way.

Now on the outside where they wreak havoc, it's now their former comrade's job to take them out in an attempt to save humanity. But under the surface cracks are still slowly forming.

Judah 1C4966
Jessie 45B6FE
Judah curled up tightly against the tree flinching at every sound and movement the others made. He was waiting for punishment. He always got punished when he did something they scientists didn't like. This time was one of the only times he felt like he deserved it. He'd hurt his team and his brother. He saw out of the corner of his eye Nana had her hand on her weapon and he knew he deserved it. She could kill him if she wanted, he understood, he didn't blame her.

When death didn't come and instead Ivan groaned he peered up from his arms to see Nana glaring at him. "What did you do?!" He flinched back from the words his back hitting the trunk of a tree. He whimpered and clenched his hands digging his nails into his palms hard enough to draw blood. He watched as Ivan looked around, probably for him, he summarised. Ivan would want to kill him like Nana. At least Jessie- Jessie! His gaze found his brother and he saw him as Jessie also opened his eyes letting out a weak cough.

Judah let out another whimper and started to mutter. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I didn't mean to. I didn't. I'm bad. I should be locked up, hurt, killed. I lost control, I'm bad... Please don't punish me. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." He let his hands fall down to his sides as he slowly looked at the ground and in a quiet voice said. "I'm a monster."

Jessie felt like someone had sucked the air out of his lungs. It hurt his chest to move but he forced his dizzy head up and moved his body onto his knees. His eyes looked around as he took in the people. His brother curled up against a tree and Nana helping Ivan up. How could he talk his way out of this one? He didn't hear his brothers words as when he stood up he felt his head swim but he stumbled over to Judah not quite making it all the way as his knees buckled as he reached Nana and Ivan. He tried to talk but couldn't find his breath as he coughed onto the ground blood spluttering from his mouth. Sadly not for the first time.

Finally, his vision returned to him, everything seemed less foggy even though it wasn't as it used to be. He looked at Nana who seemed to be furious, he noticed the sword and then he looked over at who she was directing her rage towards. It was Judah. At first, he got a bit a confused, why was she so angry at Judah? Then he noticed the dead grass around them and it came back to him. He remembered the feeling of having the air sucked out of his lungs and how it felt like something had weighed him down until he couldn't stand up anymore. He wasn't sure what had happened but he wasn't angry. He just felt tired.

Ivan removed himself from Nana feeling stronger already, he didn't feel normal yet, but he felt stronger. He took a couple of deep breathes and moved the limbs of his body to check how it felt. They felt a bit heavy but he didn't need Nana to support him anymore. So he placed his hand on top of Nana's blade and sighed, "Put that away."

Nana looked up at Ivan surprised to his action, she was about to question him when Judah started to talk, she looked down at Judah. She hadn't noticed that he had retreated into a ball, somehow he seemed so small and pitiful now. Just a moment earlier she had seen him as a monster. He had been so scary earlier but now Nana almost felt shameful for acting the way she did. So even though she felt a bit hesitant she did let go of her katana and clenched her teeth.

Just as she did so Jessie landed in front of her feet, startled she bent down to help him just as she had done with Ivan but she stopped herself and hesitated when Jessie started to chough. She felt how her puls were racing once again, she saw how the blood painted the dead grass red. She understood the reason why she clenched her teeth once more while she dug her nails into the palms of her hands. She wasn't sure why no one else seemed to be angry with Judah, but she still was.

As softly and carefully as possible she tried to assist Jessie this time while mumbling, "Why do you let him do this to you?" It wasn't her business, she knew that, but she felt so disappointed in everyone for taking the situation so lightly. Judah could have killed them all and somehow it was Nana who was treated as the one in the wrong. She felt angry at Jessie for letting his brother do this to him but she shouldn't nag right now. He seemed to be in pain already and she didn't want to make it worse.

Judah 1C4966
Jessie 45B6FE
Jessie felt the deep-seated worry for his brother fill his mind as he tried to pull air into his burning lungs. The sharp katana in Nana's hands that was scarily pointed towards Judah made him try and sputter out a defence but he didn't have to. "Put that away." Relief filled his mind as he gave Ivan a very grateful look. He didn't have to convince one of their team not to turn on his brother at least. As he was assisted to his feet he took note of his body. The dizziness had all but faded into mild nausea and the headache was bearable. Judah hadn't taken much from him he summarised as he wiped the blood from his mouth.

He was almost so lost in his thoughts that he almost didn't notice Nana's mumbled words. "Why do you let him do this to you?" His first reaction was anger that all but escaped his mouth as he flinched away from her the rage evident in his eyes before he pushed himself to calm. He had to see it from her point of view and glancing around at the devastation his brother had caused he understood the fear and anger she must be feeling. His gaze softened and he looked over at his scared brother. "Because he's just as scared as you are. Not all of us can control our mutations. Myself included. I've seen humans treat him, me and others as monsters I'm not going to add to it. Besides, it's those bastards and keeping us inside that caused this. You try and imagine 3,000 people screaming at you all at once and tell me how'd you feel."

He pulled away from her and went over to his still muttering brother and pulled him into a hug knowing the power lash out was over. "No one's punishing you, Judah. Now give the energy back we need to go." It took a few minutes before Judah's ramblings stopped and he got to his feet. He lifted a hand and visible to all three of them, thousands of tiny strings wrapped around his hand leading to the living things in the area. Including the four of them. The strings glowed and energy raced back into Ivan and Jessie's bodies leaving them feeling like they could run a marathon and the grass at his feet turned a healthy green. Flowers bloomed around Judah's feet and except for a dead animal or two the wildlife was healthier than it was before they arrived. Judah dropped his hand and the strings disappeared from visible view but judging by Judah's gaze they hadn't haded from his.

Judah turned back to the others and slowly with his head still hung let out a small whisper. "I'm sorry. I believe we should continue with the mission. I would still be happy to explain your gift wolf but I understand if you both fear me." Jessie snorted and moved over to Judah putting his arm around his shoulder. "Don't bore them with that mumbo talk. Sides we need to understand how to work as a team. Explain powers and all that stuff." He started to walk with Judah glancing back at the other two with a grin. "We need a team name."

"Because he's just as scared as you are." Nana sighed, what he said was true she understood that but at the same time, it was a hard pill to swallow. She wasn't sure how she should react or what she should say, so she just looked down at the ground as Jessie continued to speak. Not saying anything more, she silently continued to grind her teeth as a way to keep quiet. It was obvious she was the odd man out right now so there was no need to keep trying to convince the others to change their mind.

Jessie hugging Judah just cemented that belief, she had no idea what it was to have a sibling but she understood enough to understand that she had no chance to win this argument. She sighed once more and hugged herself, not in pity but in irritation. She tried to hide it but it was hard. Some annoyance did slip through. Although something beautiful happened in front of her eyes, she couldn't appreciate it. So, in the end, she just looked away and ignored it all.

Ivan watched with fascination as strings formed from nothing, he hadn't been able to see it before when only Nana was awake. But he understood that it was the base of Judah's power, that these strings that most of the time was invisible to Ivan probably made Judah able to tell what power everyone has. In the end, he finally started to understand how someone else besides himself could describe his power better than Ivan could. Sure, it was a bit scary but fascinating at the same time.

"I'm not scared. I don't see why I should be scared," Ivan was truly honest. He didn't see any reason to be scared of Judah. Perhaps it was biased, it was a huge possibility since Ivan always had pictured himself as a monster so he understood. He still felt that he was a monster so perhaps it was suited that he was placed in a team of other monsters?

"We need a team name."

Nana was still facing in another direction and ignored the comment. Ivan slightly nodded as he started to walk towards the others, "Sure, do you have any suggestions?"

Judah 1C4966
Jessie 45B6FE
Jessie had seen a few 'soul-strands' as he had dubbed them, but never this many. Even to him eyes wide they looked beautiful the colours filling his vision. To think his brother could see this, could see this beauty made him smile. He noticed Nana's irritation and frowned for a second. Not out of ill-will towards her but it made him sad to see someone feel left out. He made a note to talk to her later when things had died down slightly. Maybe there was something he could do to explain, as for now, he let her stay out of the conversation but made a note to pause every so often so that she had the option.

"I'm not scared. I don't see why I should be scared?" Jessie grinned at the question and opened his mouth to answer but was surprised as Judah spoke. The shock evident on his face as his usually silent brother and shown interest in Ivan. "Because your healing factor regenerates at a rate which is slower than the level of energy I can collect. Based on what happened before it's clear that you use your life energy to produce more. As the healing is quicker the more energy you have. if I were to remove all energy your body would cease to function." He paused as if processing what he had just said and from the confused look he explained. "Basically, I can kill you. Not that I intend to. Jessie couldn't help but burst out laughing. "I've known him his whole life and that's the most I've heard him talk in one go. He must like you, Wolfy."

Jessie lead the conversation as they walked whilst Judah focused on regrowing the two roses he had killed every so often he looked up at Ivan as if to check something and went back to his 'work'. Jessie paused for a long second before he said. "Do we even know where this boy is? I don't know about you guys but my powers don't help with finding people." He looked at Nana who would, in his opinion have the best chance.

"Because your healing factor regenerates at a rate which is slower than the level of energy I can collect. Based on what happened before it's clear that you use your life energy to produce more. As the healing is quicker the more energy you have. if I were to remove all energy your body would cease to function."

Ivan scoffed at what Judah said first, he thought that Judah was joking but after a while, he understood that Judah was serious. He frowned at first while he tried to put the pieces together. "Basically, I can kill you. Not that I intend to." Once again Ivan scoffed still not understanding the graveness of Judah's words. But once more he frowned just after and turned silent once more because he really couldn't picture that. He knew that he wasn't invincible but at the same time he felt invincible because he wasn't scared of death, he had no reason to be, he always seemed to be able to cheat death. But now Judah said that he could kill him that easily?

He wasn't sure how to react so in the end he shrugged, "So is that's why I feel so light now? Um no... I don't know if I would call it light. I feel... like I'm bursting with energy?" It was true, the moment that view had been playing out in front of his eyes he had suddenly started to feel how every muscle in his body had started buzzing. He felt hyper. He wanted to unleash the sudden burst of energy but couldn't, it was pleasant but at the same time painful. He felt powerful like he could conquer anything or anyone but at the same time, it felt like he was burning up from the inside. Was it because Judah had returned his energy even though his own body had already started to recreate what Judah had taken?

Nana was dragging her feet behind the others not feeling the vibe the others felt. She heard laughter and discussions but didn't pay much attention to it. She was busy sulking and thinking about what had just transpired in front of them all. She couldn't come to any real conclusions about it but the thoughts still continued to spin inside her head. It sure gave her a headache. But she couldn't stop obsessing over it.

"Do we even know where this boy is? I don't know about you guys but my powers don't help with finding people."

"Mine neither. Not that it surprises anyone..." Ivan looked over at Judah and Nana, not sure if any of them could help. "You can't see like their... lifeforce, Judah?"

Jessie noted the scoff that Ivan let out. It concerned him slightly, that Ivan had no concept that he could die. Jessie couldn't comment on it he supposed, it made sense. He didn't know the extent of the wolfs power but surely he could die right? He didn't have time to process this as Ivan spoke and he again opened his mouth to explain only for Judah to speak up. Jessie narrowed his eyes again, his brother didn't even talk to him that much. With crossed arms, he backed off slightly and watched as his brother met Ivan's gaze and engaged with him of all people. In the quiet that his absence caused he couldn't help but hear it. He'll abandon you. Jessie shook his head and turned to Nana.

"Hey you okay? You're kinda quiet. Penny for your thoughts? He gave her an encouraging smile knowing that talking through her feeling might make things better. He did note on Judah's and Ivan's conversation and noted that he too felt energized.

Judah smiled slightly at Ivan keen to answer his questions he nodded eagerly. "Partly yes. Your body was already making energy when I regave the energy I took. So instead of your body being full your holding 110% or something along those lines. As for sensing Decay that's harder. I've never seen his life-force so I don't know what I'm looking for and unless he lost some on his way I have nothing to track. If I've touched his soul-thread I may have a chance but I haven't."

Jessie nudged Nana slightly and cleared his throat. He'd noticed she hadn't been paying attention and he wanted to bring her back in. Remind her they were a team, she shouldn't feel left out or alone. "What about you Cat? Have you been given tracking skills? We have no way of finding Decay. You're the one who has the best luck I'd think. Not that I know your power. We should probably explain our gifts to each other."

"Hey you okay? You're kinda quiet. Penny for your thoughts?"

Startled, Nana jumped backward when Jessie suddenly addressed her. She hadn't even noticed that he had approached her, she had shut down completely. But now she stared at Jessie while opening her mouth just to shut it again while nervously fiddling with the edge of her skirt. Her cheeks were burning a little but this time they just took a pinkish color instead of the tomato red she had displayed earlier the same day.

Her eyes were acting like pinballs, jumping all over the place never really slowing down at one place for even a second as she forced out a weak whisper, "I don't know... Or well, yes, I do know... It's just hard to describe it..." She turned quiet again as she tried to sort out her thoughts to the best of her abilities but sighed in the end. "I just don't understand... I can't see why you're not sharing my concerns about what happened. I can't picture how you can forgive so easily... or how you can't be mad about it at all. It's not just you, it's Arctic Wolf as well which means it's me whose in the wrong. But I can't comprehend why I'm the one in the wrong... The only thing I can see is how everything will go wrong and everyone will end up dead."

She let out a burst of sad laughter and shook her head, "Let's just say I'm a bit confused at the moment. Nothing more, nothing less."

"110 percent sounds about right because I feel like I would be able to crush stones with my bare hands if I tried. Not that I'm going to try! I'm not that stupid to make a fool out of myself." But at the same time he was a bit intrigued, but he wasn't curious enough to try it out. He glanced back towards Jessie and Nana, no he didn't feel like losing face in front of Piper. He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of anyone but especially him because he rubbed him the wrong way.

Ivan looked over at Judah when he described the restrictions of his powers, he silently nodded before adding, "Too bad, but it would've been too easy that way, huh?"

"What about you Cat? Have you been given tracking skills? We have no way of finding Decay. You're the one who has the best luck I'd think. Not that I know your power. We should probably explain our gifts to each other."

"Oh..." Nana looked over at the others, no one knew anything about tracking? Obviously, that made sense. But she hadn't thought about the possibility yet. "Yeah, sure... Let me... look around a little. It may take a bit more time because of... that thing earlier." She didn't feel like getting into it more than that at the moment. But she wasn't sure what Judah's ability could have done to any traces left by Decay and the group. The rampage could have erased them completely if that was the case she had to work in a bigger area to be able to find any traces.

She stood still for a minute with her eyes closed as she slowly breathed out and in, when she finally opened her eyes she focused on the ground. She stood still at first and just silently watched every single strand closely, looking for traces of disturbance. She started walking towards something, bent down to look closer and touch it, but moved onwards. In her mind she could see every little detail that seemed wrong, it was like every single footprint was slowly illuminating themselves. And she followed them, looking at them one by one to see if she could find anything that resembled something left by a child. Everything else was deemed useless.

She walked around like that for a while until she finally saw a clutter of prints lit up further away, she walked over and bent down once more and started to scan what had been left. She crawled on the grass as she discovered what seemed to be two adults and... one child. That should be right, there was three of them who left together. She stood up once more and brushed the dust from her clothes as she turned around towards the others, "I'm quite certain that they headed this way."

Jessie couldn't help but genuinely smile at the girl in front of him. She was nervous, he could tell, but despite all of that she was sticking with them and he felt like he was slowly understanding what she was going through. The dusting of rose on her cheeks made his face light up with colour and he decided he liked that, she looked pretty. "I don't know... Or well, yes, I do know." He couldn't help but chuckle as she spoke not from not feeling for her but because he couldn't help it. He supposed this was one of the first times someone asked her how she was feeling. The thought made his smile fade for a second.

"Firstly, you're not the one in the wrong, but neither is Judah." He paused understanding how that could hear and decided to backtrack. "I get it. I honestly do. From outside eyes, he looks like he's more dangerous than useful. I suppose I am as well. See we're not like you Cat. We don't have as much control on our gifts as you. I... have to constantly hold mine back and even then...." He drifted off with a dark look and decided, no, he wasn't going there.

He was about to talk again but she had started to track and he didn't want to interrupt whatever her work of art was. He watched her eyes wide and impressed as she looked around the area and saw what none of them could. He found he appreciated her subtle and powerful gift more and more. It wasn't like his or Judah's or even Ivan's, it was quiet and easy to depend on and he realised that yes, the woman had chosen well, they needed someone as reliable as Copy Cat to depend on.

"I'm quite certain that they headed this way." Okay. Jessie trusted her he didn't even hesitate to grin
and start heading in that direction. "Okay great! Let's go!" He headed off ahead of the others eager to set off. Judah watched his brother go off and with one glance to Ivan slowly started to follow.

Ivan quietly watched as Nana was searching their surroundings, he wasn't sure what she was doing but he had to admit it looked a bit funny. At the same time, he questioned the intelligence of their 'team leader', why didn't they have someone better suited for hunting. There should be someone with a better or stronger power that could lead them towards the child. Like, someone who could smell them or anything at all. He wasn't able to finish the thought because then Nana told them that she had found something. He shrugged away the thought but still stood by it, he still thought it was a strange decision.

"Okay great! Let's go!" Nana nodded quietly and pointed in the direction the footsteps were heading, "We better get going so we can cover some ground before nightfall..."

"True, we've wasted enough time already." Nana looked over at Ivan and nodded silently before she started walking in the direction as the group before them. She focused her energy at the ground and looked towards the distance as the surrounding started to get out of focus, all she could see was the small footsteps of a child who had trampled the grass days ago. Everything else got blurred out. She was placed somewhere in the middle of the past and the present, she knew that she had her team with her behind her but at the moment the only thing she could see was the small mutant child walking beside her.

Silence, darkness, an illuminated child walking slowly by himself and Nana followed, watching every step he took, but something was picking at her attention and the world showed itself as she tried to locate the source, looking around and finally, her eyes landed on Jessie, "...you're not the one in the wrong, but neither is Judah."

She furrowed her eyebrows, slightly confused, "I get it. I honestly do. From outside eyes, he looks like he's more dangerous than useful. I suppose I am as well. See we're not like you Cat. We don't have as much control on our gifts as you. I... have to constantly hold mine back and even then...." Oh! Oh... Now she understood what he was talking about.

She looked over at him and tilted her head, waiting for the continuation but it never came so she nodded slightly and looked down at the ground once more to watch were Decay was heading. But she didn't lose herself all the way this time, so after a while of silence, she glanced towards Jessie once more, "I think I understand what you mean... Well... This is the first time I've ever got to talk to anyone who is considered to be powerful... Everyone, or my friends in the cafeteria, are all like me... We know that we're not powerful. You could substitute me with any one of them and most likely get the same thing. It only exists one Arctic Wolf and Blue Rose... They are special... You are all special. No one could take your places."

She stopped talking, she could say much more but she stopped herself. There was no need to talk about this. They already knew all this. She sighed and gave Jessie a sad smile, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say so much. You can ignore half of it."

Ivan snorted and rolled his eyes, "That's for sure. No one is interested so just shut your mouth and focus on tracking that kid. I don't feel like wasting time getting lost because you are not a true tracker. There should be plenty of better options." His voice was cold and he didn't look at her even once, even a child would be able to detect the scorn in his voice.

"We know that we're not powerful." Jessie stared at her shocked. Is that what she really thinks? That she was less powerful? Jessie couldn't help but laugh despite the annoyance in his face he hated those scientists for making those like her think that way, that they were lesser, for making Judah think he was a freak for- what they did to him. "Powerful? Do you think I'M powerful? All I can do is talk well. Out of the 4 of us my powers are the least useful. What am I going to do? Talk him into coming? Let him obsess over me?" Jessie laughed quietly to himself.

They know you're weak, how useless you are.

"You know how weak I am. I know it. The strongest person here is Judah. Then you then Wolf then me."
"There should be plenty of better options." He narrowed his eyes at Wolf about to rip him out before he stopped himself. This wasn't going to make things better. Stepping away from his own head he looked around, tried to understand how the group dynamic was shifting. This was what he was good at, people skills and it was why he was picked. His eyes landed on Judah, the quiet boy was paying minimal attention but his eyes rested on the wolf. The wolf was glaring at everyone and everything particularly at him. Cat's eyes scanned the ground but he got the idea even if she wasn't tracking that's where they would be. He needed to get them all to know but how?! He was unsure what to say but a quiet voice beat him to it.

"Copy-cat. Explain to us what you see. How long ago was Decay here? What can you tell from the tracks?" He looked up at Ivan like a shot puppy sad at his anger like he'd directed it towards him instead of Nana. "She was picked because she is reliable she is the only one of us who is consistent and constant she is stronger than me." End of conversation in Judah's eyes he went back to his flower not open for arguments.

Jessie cleared his throat. "Judah's right. She has control and she is finding decay. As far as I can see she's MVP. If you have an issue with that puppy take it up with me or better yet Judah. I'm sure he'd love to show you how mortal you are." Jessie's eyes flashed dangerously and he looked crazied as he put a hint, just a small hint of his power into his words. Not enough to fully take Ivan but enough for him to get an idea of what he could do, that he didn't have free will here when it came to threating anyone, Jessie wouldn't allow it.
