Description

Image
Physical description

Height: Average, roughly 5"9
Hair: Shou has dark-ish, unkempt blonde hair.
His hair comes down to just above his eyebrows at the front, reaches the bottom of his ears on both sides, and is almost shoulder length at the back.
Eye Colour: Brown
Shou is 16 years old, and is usually seen wearing headphones as a fashion accessory and is rarely seen without them. He normally wears a white shirt with another white
t-shirt that has an orange trim underneath, and has orange glasses that he sometimes wears to protect his sensitive eyes.

Personality

After being alone for most of his younger years, Shou has gotten used to being on his own and has developed a slight degree of autism and tends to stay away from people he doesn't know, and feels uncomfortable around large groups. He tries to avoid making friends as he has a fear of saying something that would make them leave him, so he tries to make it look like he is fine on his own.

Shou has an obsession with music and admires guitar players as out of all of the members of a band, he thinks the guitar player looks the happiest, and often broke into his old schools music department to experiment playing the guitar. Although he mainly listens to band, Shou enjoys all sorts of genres. For example, he loves it when people use the guitar or piano add impact to electronic music, and when he is tired he often listens to peaceful music using pianos, violins etc. to put himself to sleep.

Equipment & Abilities

Shou is completely attached to his headphones because of his love for music, and only ever takes them off on rare occasions such as swimming. He feels insecure when he is not wearing his headphones because of events in the past. He keeps his glasses in the breast pocket of his shirt and only wears them when he needs to, e.g. outside on a sunny day, or when he first steps outside and his eyes are adjusting to the light. Shou usually keeps a lock-pick with him just in case he finds the opportunity to play a guitar, but can't get in through the windows, although he prefers not to use it as he is a novice at unlocking doors and normally breaks the lock instead of opening the door.

Historical Background

When Shou was 4 years old, he awoke one night to the sound of banging downstairs. When he went down to see what was going on, the living room was a mess, the tables were flipped over, the leather couch had tears in it, and after checking his parents room, Shou discovered his parents were gone and he didn't know why. He was discovered hiding in his wardrobe the next day by police who were responding to a complaint about noise made by the neighbours. Since the incident, Shou has been floating from house to house, meeting new people, then moving on and forgetting all about them.

One day, a care worker who had been following Shou decided that instead of being fostered again, it would be more beneficial to keep him in an orphanage where he could get the chance to make friends and be reintroduced to a normal life.

After a few months in the Shigoto Orphanage, Shou started to get on the bad side of Miss Green because of some of the habits he developed. Miss Green noticed that even if he wasn't listening, Shou would have music playing on his headphones nearly all the time, and when it got loud in the orphanage or when she shouts at him, he would put his headphones on and walk away.

Helen noticed that Shou doesn't get along with other children, and barely speaks to adults unless there is a question they direct specifically to him, and started to try encouraging him to talk to other people. Helen tried to make him start eating with the other children instead of taking his lunch to his room, but even so, he eats on his own, ignores the other children when they speak to him, and often stares into space as if he is thinking of something. The care workers that have previously worked with Shou all think that he is keeping the emotions he has been feeling bottled up inside of him, and likes to release them through playing music, which is why he never misses a chance to play.

Shou is one of the newest members of Shigoto Orphanage, and after 3 months of staying there, has managed to avoid every performance. He is modest in saying that he can't play very well, but truthful when he says he can't read sheet music as he taught himself to play. Most of the time, he sneaks out of practise and hides somewhere during performances. He has yet to be discovered hiding and claims he would join in if he learned how to read sheet music, but says he can never find the time, which is starting to get old.

The only time anyone has ever seen Shou smiling, is when Helen went to check on him in his room, and caught him singing along to his music, which was is also one of the only times he uses his voice. Most of the children in the orphanage think Shou has an unhealthy obsession with music, but Helen understands that he uses music to protect himself from falling into sadness and sorrow, and to cover his sad thoughts and memories. He believes that he if he learns so many songs, that the knowledge of playing or singing each song will make him completely forget about what has happened to him in the past, but sometimes doubts that as it has had an influence on who he is and how he acts. To Shou, music isn't something you simply listen to, but part of life itself.

So begins...

Dahlia

Image

Dahlia looked up from her coloring book and out the window, only for her eyes to meet a grey, rainy day. She scrunched her nose; it wasn't that she didn't like the rain, but she surely didn't want to be cooped up in the orphanage for 24 whole hours! She let out a impatient sigh, closing her book and letting her crayons scatter across the floor. The brunette knew she was going to be scolded for making such a mess, but she didn't really care. She thought she could just... clean it up before anyone sees! That is, if she made it to her room before they came in.

As the young girl thought about what she could do, a thought crossed her mind. Dahlia hasn't seen Shou around the orphange all day. Sure, he's normally one to keep to himself, but he wouldn't skip breakfast normally. Then again, no one really would, meals were small these days. "Maybe he's still asleep..." Dahlia mumbled to herself, getting to her feet. "I should wake him up, he's going to miss the whole day! The young girl said, running out of her room.

No more than 2 minutes later, Dahlia creaked open the door and peaked in to see Shou, resting soundly. She could hear his music from across the room, meaning that he is most likely not able to hear anything. She pouted, and rushed over to his bedside. Dahlia then crawled onto his bed and sat on top of him, pulling off his headphones and bouncing herself. "Get up, get up!" She said, frowning slightly.

Shou

Shou woke up as he felt something heavy bouncing on him. He slowly opened his eyes and leaned upwards to find a small girl with a familiar face before him. After leaning upwards, Dahlia started sliding off him and fell backwards, dropping his headphones. Still drowsy from waking up, Shou tried his best to comprehend the situation. "Are they.. Who are.. What?"
Finally starting to realize she had come to wake him up, he rubbed his eyes and got out of bed. He gave a large stretch, then reached to put his headphones on, at which point he noticed they were gone. He thought to himself 'I could have sworn I was wearing them when I went to sleep' He then turned and noticed they were on the bed next to Dahlia. He got a little angry about her taking them, but didn't want to shout because she had good intentions. "Thanks for waking me, you can go now" Shou grabbed his headphones and put them back on, turned to face the window, and waited for her to go.

Dahlia frowned as she watched the somewhat stranger reach for his headphones and slipped them back over his ears. As he tried to shoo her away, she nodded no. "I woke you up, so now you have to pay me back for doing a good deed!" She said, a smirk growing on her face. The young girl has seen the male around the orphanage for quite some time now, however, she never had the chance to actually... talk to him like she's doing now.

She tugged on his sleeve, "Everyone else is busy, and that's boring! I wanna play!" She said, trying to get his attention.

ImageTurning to look at the girl, Shou took a few seconds to process what she was asking of him. He took a step back in shock of someone wanting to play with him. "Say.. I don't mind playing if i have to, but why of all people are you asking me? I bet the cook isn't busy, or maybe Helen.." As much as he didn't want to play, Shou also didn't want to turn this little girl away. "Hey, do I know you?" He asked after giving up on trying to remember her name. "Sorry, I'm not good with people.." Shou looked away from the girl and scratched the side of his face with his index finger, awkwardly waiting for a reply.

Dahlia let out a slight giggle, watching this guy's confused expressions was entertaining. She then shrugged at his question. "They are all busy! Plus, I don't wanna play with the other kids, they're playing games I don't like..." She said in a slightly sadden tone. Dahlia shrugged once again at his next question. "Of course! Well, sort of. Maybe a little.... nope." The brunette said with a entertained smile.

"I'm Dahlia, who are you?" She asked, sitting up and sliding off the bed.

ImageSeeing that he's not getting out of this, he turned around to answer Dahlia's question. "Shou. What kind of games do you like?" Shou took off his glasses and put them in his pocket, then thought back to the last time had had to play with someone. Giving off a sigh, he looked back at Dahlia. "I won't be any good at playing unless music is involved. And I'm not playing any sports, got it?" He sat down at his desk, looked out of the window to see what the other kids were doing, then spun around to face Dahlia again. "One more thing, I'm not going out in the rain. I'm not gonna risk these babies getting water damage." He said as he readjusted his headphones for a more comfy fit.

Dahlia didn't even bother to listen to Shou after he introduced himself, just letting her mind wander. "Hmm... we can play tag, or hide and seak, or color, or go out in the rain, or hop s...." The little girl continued on and on, naming off all the things they can do, only stopping to take in a deep breath. Of course, after she did so, she continued on! I guess you can say making a 'new friend' hyped her up.

Being bombarded with names of games to play, Shou tried to think of ways to make Dahlia stop. "Um.. Stop... Stop?... Hello?..." It was almost like she was thinking so much about games that she couldn't hear him at all. Since Dahlia couldn't hear him, or just wasn't listening, he tried waving his hand in front of her face.. Nothing. He tried shaking her, pulling funny faces, and dancing, but no matter what he did, she kept on listing games. Eventually, he realized how stupid he must have looked and gave up. Shou waited for Dahlia to take another deep breath, grabbed her by the shoulders and shouted "We are going to play hide and seek!" at her. Great. This way he could find an unfair hiding spot, and listen to his music in peace. Not somewhere she can't go, he wanted to give her a bit of a chance, but the place she would least expect him to be...

"Gah!" Dahlia let out a startled cry as Shou suddenly grabbed her shoulders. As he shouted one of the hundred of suggestions, her eyes lit up. "Sure! Let's play, let's play!" She said, jumping up and down. "Okay, me first! Count to ten, ready, set, go!" The little girl ran out of the room to search for her hiding spot.

As she did so, she saw another unfamiliar face approach the orphanage. Although she wanted to greet him, Shou might of reached 10 by now! And so, she continued her way.

Yui finished the song right as Miss Green barged in, knocking the tiny girl off her stool and onto the hard wood floor. The other children raced off to other parts of the building. "You insolent child! You KNOW you are not allowed to lock the door! You should be ashamed! Helen told me that you haven't been leaving your room for over three months, and that is going to change THIS INSTANT!" The lady screamed. She dragged Yui out of the room by her wrist, dumping her in the hallway and locking the bedroom door. "Now, go and be useful!" Miss Green slipped the key into her pocket and stormed off.

Yui rubbed her reddened wrist and stood. Glaring daggers at the tall woman, she silently walked over to a room that had been empty for several years. Much to her surprise, she opened the door to find a tall boy with blonde hair and headphones. Yui had never seen the boy before. She contemplated leaving, but something about him seemed different than the other children...

Image As he searched for Dahlia, Shou ran into another younger girl who appeared to be studying him. As he stood there being looked at by this girl he had never talked to before, he recognized her as Yui who was always fighting or just generally causing trouble. Shou had always heard Miss Green shouting her name, or other kids talking about her, but had never got the chance to see her in person. Shou didn't want to talk to her, but felt like he couldn't just ignore her. "Something wrong?" He asked trying not to sound too aggressive. "Is there a reason you keep staring at me like that?" Although trying to engage in conversation, Shou wasn't expecting an answer, after all he had heard that Yui never spoke. He closed his eyes for a second, opened them again and started to walk past.

Yui continued staring at the boy, shocked that he was actually talking to her. "...no reason..." She whispered, so quietly she didn't even think he could hear. Yui blushed lightly and raced off to the opposite side of the house. She slid under the kitchen sink and pulled the cupboard doors shut, the enclosed space providing comfort.

Dahlia smirked, closing the door to the closet and burying herself under Miss Green's coats. Honestly, she always saw Miss Green walk in with coats and over-the-top jewelry, but she'd hardly wear any of them. The brunette didn't understand why, they were brilliantly made, but that was the last thing she was thinking of right now. Shou surely couldn't find her here, right? No one else has before!

No more than 3 minutes passed by, and she heard footsteps. Dahlia let out a giggle, muffled by the coats covering her. But that playful expression quickly faded away quickly as one of the coats was pulled off her head, only for her eyes to meet Miss Green.

The woman frowned down at her. "Honestly, I had to deal with that other trouble maker, now you?!" The older lady grabbed Dahlia by the hair and pulled her out. She then crouched down to her height and started whispering vulgar things into the 6 year olds ear.

After Miss Green gathered what she needed from the closet, she left Dahlia in tears. She quickly made her way up to her room.

Yui heard muffled crying coming from outside. Creaking open the cupboard doors, she peeked out to see a little brunette girl crying. She didn't know what to do. Picking up a sponge from the pile she was sitting on, Yui tossed it at the girl to get the little her attention. She scooted over and waited to see if the 6 year old would come over. Her confidence slowed and she quickly shut the doors as she noticed the tall blonde boy come around the corner. Pulling her knees to her chest, Yui sat in silence as the other children screamed and ran around. No one ever noticed where she was when she hid. The only times she had ever been found before was during Spring Cleaning when Cook and Helen found her hiding in an empty trash bin. Yui hated the other children. Why, she didn't know, but there was something about the other children that she hated. But those things didn't matter.

Yui heard a knock on the cupboard door and jumped back. At first she thought it was just one of the older children messing with her, but a kind voice slipped through the silence. Yui opened the door enough to see who it was. Before her sat an older boy she had never seen before. She couldn't see the little girl or the blonde boy in the background. Yui looked quizzically at the boy in front of her, not sure how to react, and closed the door. She had been seeing so many new faces in the last half hour that she felt as if she were in a new place altogether. Yui hid her face in her knees and waited silently for the boy to leave.

Shou started to feel hungry doing all this running around looking for Dahlia, so decided to raid the kitchen in hopes of finding something to eat, but noted Miss Green does notice when her chocolates go missing. As he entered the room, he noticed Dahlia on the floor, thinking she wasn't very good at hiding. "They call it hide and seek because your meant to hide while the other person seeks you" As he approached her, he began to hear her crying. "I bet it was Miss Green wasn't it? I swear one day someones going to take her down a peg... Wait.. A sponge? What exactly did she do to you?" Shou crouched down in front of her and turned around. "If you want, I could carry you to your room? Don't get used to it though" Shou didn't know how else to cheer her up, after all, Miss Green can be brutal at the best of times.

As Dahlia wiped the tears from her eyes, she heard something land behind her and jumped a little. Through her blurry vision, she saw a... sponge? The brunette looked up the the cupboard and tilted her head slightly. Rats? No, a rat can't toss something that far. However, before she could investigate, she saw the male from earlier and stepped aside.

He approached the cupboard and knocked on it. Although this was confusing to her, she didn't make anything of it. Right now, all she wanted was her mother. Dahlia didn't even care about he game anymore. She looked up at Shou with red eyes and sniffles. "..." The little girl outstretched her arms, as if she was allowing Shou to pick her up.

ImageWhen Dahlia was on his back, Shou headed towards the door out of the kitchen noticing Yui charging out in a rush. 'It's hard to get a read on that girl' He though to himself thinking back to their previous encounter. "I didn't think about it before, but doors are going to be a major obstacle with you on my back. Nothing I can't handle though." He crouched down, and pushed down on the handle with his chin, giving a slight grunt as he used his forehead to push the door open. "You sure are heavier than you look, my backs already killing." Shou tried talking with Dahlia, but it seemed like she was to upset to say anything back. "Don't worry about Miss Green. Won't be long before that hag is pushing daisies" Although he felt harsh for saying it, he soon regretted saying it aloud as he found himself running to Dahlia's room after hearing "What was that about me!?" coming from one of the nearby rooms. Worried about missing dinner, Shou let Dahlia down in her room. "I'l bring you back dinner once things have calmed down. If I don't its because Miss Green caught me, ok" He said as he left the room and ran to the dining room.

Dahlia rested her chin on Shou's shoulder as he carried her up to her room. Normally, she'd adore having rides like this, but right now, Miss Green's words really got to her. What do you think that does to a child's mind? Surely Dahlia hasn't heard the half of it, but she sure did hope she wouldn't have to. She did nod along to Shou's words, but only half understood what he said. As he set her down and told her he'd fetch her a meal, she didn't look up at him. "... You didn't come find me in time..." Dahlia choked out, her eyes burning with tears once again.

As Shou left to do what he promised, she crawled onto her bed and buried herself in her blanket. As she laid there, she thought about the sponge from earlier. Who did that? Why? She hoped she'd find out sooner or later.

Shou

Image Shou sat in the dining hall long after the other children left, thinking about why Yui attacked Miss Green whilst she was shouting at him. The more he thought, the more confused and angry he got. Now two people who were trying to help him had fallen victim to Miss Green. It made him so mad that he wanted to put her in her place. Just as he got up to go to his room, Shou heard a voice from behind him. "Its late kid. Go to bed now or don't sleep at all." Of all times, she had to be there now? Miss Green stepped forward into the light of the nearby door as Shou turned around, pure hatred in his eyes. "Leave them.." Shou didn't know what he was saying, so focused on wanting to hit her, he couldn't think of what he wanted to say. "Leave my friends alone!" He said in a deep tone. "Are you telling me what to do, boy?" Miss Green grabbed him by the collar and started yelling things at his face, that he really didn't care about. All he could see was Dahlia crying, and Yui biting her ankle, pushing him to the edge. "Look at you..." Shou thought now is as good a time as any, so said things that would make Miss Green make him more angry, letting it build up to his breaking point. "You get all hot and bothered, then shout at people and beat them over the smallest of things. It's pathetic." Seeing the rage in Miss Green's eyes, Shou thought it wouldn't be long until she started beating him. "Aren't you seventeen this year? Wont be too long until I kick your scrawny ass out of here and you have to fend for yourself in the real world!" Starting to see red, Shou knew it was now or never. "Shut up!!" He yelled at the top of his voice, grabbed her coat with one hand, and threw a punch at her face with the other. Shou was never a strong kid, so his punch barely knocked her back, and before he knew it he was throwing another punch her way. Unlucky for Shou however, Miss Green had longer arms, and pushed him back before he could reach her. He stepped backwards and slipped on a plate that had been left on the floor. As he fells, he reached for the table next to him with his left arm, trying to grab something to hold on to, but ended up scratching himself on the cutlery. When he had fallen to the ground, a knife fell from the table, and landed sharp side on his hand. Not feeling it through his anger, he tried to get back up, at which point he felt an intense pain as the knife slid out of the wound and let out a loud cry. Miss Green turned and walked away leaving him with some parting words "You had that coming, little brat." The knife had gone all the way through Shou's hand. He needed to stop it from bleeding out, but didn't know how so quickly ran to the nearest first aid kit, holding his hand the whole way and poorly wrapped his hand with a bandage. It wasn't great, but it was the most he could do. He started to make his way towards his room, but started slowing down, going light headed, and was loosing vision, about to collapse. Shou started leaning on the wall to take the pressure of his feet, but is wasn't enough and fell to his knees against the wall without noticing he had walked past Yui and Solomon, leaving a trail of blood.

Yui heard footsteps on the stairs, and didn't care until she smelled the distinct stench of blood. Yui flipped around. Ignoring the taller boy, she saw the blonde boy sneak into his room, a trail of blood behind him. Yui gasped. She knew something was wrong. Running to the other side of the hall, she ripped the First Aid Kit off the wall and raced after the blonde. She tried to get his attention but her silence was failing her. So, for the first time in years, she spoke. "Hey!" She yelled at the blonde. She waited for him to respond. She didn't realize that the boy couldn't respond.

As Solomon was next to the little girl, he noticed an older boy walking past them clutching his hand with a pained look on his face. Solomon watched the boy for a few moments until the little girl rushed out into the hallway after the boy. Solomon was confused as to what was happening until he noticed the trail of blood spilled onto the floor. Solomon raced down the hallway wide eyed and eventually he made it to the side of the boy who was losing blood very fast. The little girl soon joined Solomon at the side of the injured boy with a first aid kit. Solomon opened the first aid kit to try and patch the wound which appeared to be a knife cut that dug all the way through the boys hand, but there were no linen wraps to be found inside of the first aid kit. The only material that was of use were his clothes because they were new and clean. Solomon took off his shirt and tore it to pieces so that he could wrap the wound.

Squinting his eyes and taking deep breaths, Shou slowly regained consciousness and carried on making his way up the stairs with the aid of Solomon and Yui. Upon reaching the top, Shou saw a blur of green as yet another person Approached. All Shou remembered thinking was 'I wish people would stop saying life is an adventure, because I'v had enough..' As the stranger got closer, they appeared to be holding a little kitten. As the trio and the girl passed each other, Shou muttered out the word "Cute." However, he wasn't sure whether she heard him, or for that matter whether she knew he was talking about the kitten.

As Solomon and the little girl carried the boy down the hall to his room, he felt the boy shift in his grip. Solomon looked at the boy and realized that he was conscious again and raising his head to look around. Down the hall there was a girl passing them, she was wearing a lot of green and holding a kitten. The boy looked at the girl and said something that Solomon could not really make out. Solomon assumed that the care takers were probably making a room for her right now. Solomon looked down at the girl helping him with the injured boy and said, " could you show that girl to her room for me please. I'll take care of him". Solomon helped the boy into the boys room and onto the bed. Then he pulled over a chair from a nearby desk and set it down in front of the window and sat down.

Feeling a lot easier laying on his bed, Shou felt like he could talk a bit more clearly. "Shouldn't you be heading off back to your own room now? Greeny will hunt your ass down if your not there by the time she is." As much as he didn't like having a stranger in his room, Shou figured the guy helped him out so tried to be nice. He pointed at Solomon with his good hand and said "Your coming with me tomorrow. I'l show you how to get out unnoticed.." He then tried to raise his wounded hand and declared "Besides, I owe you a shirt." He dropped both hands and stared at the ceiling, thinking he needs a new poster whilst he's out.
