Welcome to a different world - a world where the era of civilization has long passed by. War, plague, industrial accidents, and natural disasters have left their mark, leaving much of this earth bare and barren. Plants struggle for their own survival, and agriculture is an impossible goal from the infertile soil. With no electrical grid and few working generators, technology is a rare and foreign commodity. The era of skyscrapers and electronic goods are times of obscure legends. Many dangerous, mutated creatures roam this land, making life far too hazardous to those who foolishly choose to venture alone.
For this reason, most humans exist in small, highly superstitious villages. They shun all that are strange to them, frightened of the bizarre, the potentially dangerous... some, even their own children. There is one particular being, born of human parents that is regarded with greater suspicion and terror than any other: Skinwalkers.
They choose to call themselves Changers, Skinwalkers being a title bestowed upon them by terrified humans, and they are easily identified from birth or shortly afterwards. They are born with strange traits - perhaps sharp teeth, blunt claws for nails, or slits for pupils. Some have feathers in the stead of hair, and others, normal in appearance, may display oddities in their behavior. A child might chase mice, might howl to the moon... but most frightening to the humans of all, is how these Changers or Skinwalkers could change their forms, take the form of an animal... of course, which is from what both their titles were derived.
Humans could not explain why this happened, so they assumed the powers evil in origin. Eventually it came to be that these shape-shifting beings were shunned from society all together. Most were killed upon discovery, in fear that the parents would be shunned from their own society as heralds of evil. Some were abandoned, banished into the olden ruins by their family or village, and told in no certain terms that if they were seen again, no mercy would be shown. Of course, now and again, the odd human would do so tearfully, sorrowfully.....
While life was difficult for humans in this harsh world, it was all the worse for the Changers. Most died out, being abandoned too young to survive in the wastelands. Even those who grew to adulthood, being alone with few skills of their own, were quickly killed by the mutant creatures that roamed the wastes and ruins. Others lost their humanity completely, becoming nothing more than savage beasts.
However, some - the resourceful, the strong, the adaptable - managed to survive, and of them, a handful... just a mere handful banded together into packs in order to increase their chances at this game of life and death.
Now, what is our story? What is so significant about these Changers, these Skinwalkers, that we've told you so much about them now? What do they have to do with the city now known as Aethes? To put it simply, the world of this story is not all that large - it focuses on this lost city of Aethes, on two branches of Changers. The more prominent, the one that even far off human settlements have heard rumors of, is the growing empire - his empire. He bears power over the hundreds of Changers, shunned from the rest of the world, who gathered in the city ruins. They respect him and follow him for his great strength. He makes his base at the sole reservoir of Aethes - a precious site as clean water is scarce, and even the rain is contaminated. He shoulders the burden of making it last and keeping the citizens safe and well.
He is a hero to all the Changers of the world...
...Supposedly.
Despite the praises surrounding this great leader, both within the borders of Aethes and in the surrounding wastelands as well, there are a select few who do not support him, few who do not believe in this supposed 'great hero', 'great leader'.
A small band of rebels living within Aethes, they call themselves The Pack.
This 'pack' - well, it seems only they will ever know why they've chosen to oppose the leader of this growing empire. With their smaller, insignificant numbers, they have accomplished little - too little. The Pack has few accomplishments to speak of except that they have yet to be caught, have yet to die out. The Army has declared to the inhabitants of the empire that these rebels, along with any and all humans that happen to stray into the city, were to be killed on sight. For what reason? Well, what everyone's heard is that the rebels of The Pack are working to cast the Changer empire, their hard won prosperity to ruin, and bring humans back to Aethes. Only the rebels know how close or far to truth these words may be.
Once upon a time, the world was green and filled with life, and on one portion of that world, there was a great city, prosperous and grand. It was said to be a bustling capital city, a metropolis famous for its stunning lights and starry nights. An urban paradise, it was called, with at least one thing that appealed to everyone. A melting pot of cultures all set melded into one society.
That world and that city are no more.
The reason was lost in the haze of years past, but the world is barren now. The earth is dry with desert sands replacing what was once called an ocean. Trees are scarce and waters scarcer, and the creatures who depend on both are dying out. There are places in this new world that can bear no life and all who set foot there are horribly disfigured or driven mad. The old languages are lost. The old writings are lost. The old way of living is forever lost. This lifeless world, this dying world, is the present world that some say was born of greed, of fear, of anger, or ambition. This is the present world that spares no one of its suffering, yet some still struggle to live on. The humans clung together, finding settlements closest to resources to try and continue their legacy. However, it was not only the world that changed. Over the years, mutants emerged, dangerous and wilder than any existing beast. Perhaps it was the influence of this new addition to the world, these terrifying creatures, that caused the humans to hate the Changers so. It is unknown when they first called them Skinwalkers, a word that held significance in olden words, but now was said with contempt and fear.
More time passed, and more and more of these Changers, these Skinwalkers emerged, and more and more were cast into the wastelands, far from any site that could hope to sustain life. Those who managed to survive chose to wander, and many who wandered found the ruins of a city. They were the remains of what was clearly once a great settlement, but that mattered not. What mattered was this: it was a home, and the humans hadn't found it yet. Thus, survivors began to gather and start new lives, and this city came to be called Aethes.
Through word of mouth and the spirit of rumors, stories of this Changer City reached even human settlements, which put them ill at ease. The Changers who heard of it, however, found hope. Yet there were still problems - shunned from society, few Changers knew of how to survive with others. Every one of them lived for themselves alone. Anarchy ensued.
Now, it is unknown for what reasons, but there was one Changer who rose above the rest of them. He united the population under him, and through him, peace was found. Did he simply decide to take advantage of a weakened society and seize power? Or was he truly hoping to unite the Changers to start their own legacy? As with a pack, his true intentions are known only to him, but the fact of the matter is this:
Now we have an empire. Now we have an army.
With these two things come rules and oppression, but whether the people accept it or not is not our place to tell.
This is where our story starts, with the great empire of a great Changer, and the small Pack of rebels who seek to stop it.
Its name and glory lost in time, this city is the empty skeleton of a once grand civilization. Although it has earned many names in myths and tales, those who know of it now call it Aethes. What it was in the past is of no importance now... because in these times, it is no longer the awe-inspiring city it once was. Now, it is simply the only place for Changers to go. These city ruins are set in the wastes, with the human-settled hills to the distant north and desert every other way. These deserts hide no wells, and rain is scarce - what little there is has been contaminated anyway. Yet, despite these conditions, within these ruins, Changers have forged a small society.
The heart of it lies near the center of the ruins - a building miraculously standing, far less weather-beaten than the others. It seems there was some misinformation in the prior passage - these deserts hide no wells... but they do hide a reservoir.
His reservoir.
It is unknown how this building survived when all others collapsed under the burden of time and contamination, and even more mysterious is how the water within it has remained pure when even rain falls like acid. Some say the supernatural is at work, that it was a gift from some greater power, and perhaps it is so - after all, when one peers into the waters at night, they'll see a thousand glittering lights like stars within their depths. However, none of the common people can see this. As stated before, ever since he united the Changers, this is his reservoir, and he keeps it guarded close. Beside it, he has constructed a makeshift fortress, large enough for him and all his officials, taking up a good third of the ruins still standing. From here, he rules over the city of Aethes.
The rest of the Changers have forged new lives in the surrounding buildings, those ruins just stable enough to inhabit. As for the remainder, although by description, it is still a part of Aethes, these ruins are little more than rubble. Only mutants lurk and thrive here in these crumbled structures... or so most believe.
What most do not realize is there is more to the debris than it seems.
In a section at the outskirts of Aethes, where the concrete fell most heavily and the dust lies thickest, there is more than just the mutants. Beneath the rubble, hidden within the ruins is a rebellion. How is this possible? Well, there is shelter beneath the debris. This shelter comes in the form of a single car of what was once some kind of mechanized, elongated form of transportation. There is not much room at all, and certainly it cannot be compared to the fortress the leader of Aethes has constructed, but this is where the Pack does its work. Perhaps it is for the best, as so far from the fortress and the populated parts of the city and buried beneath the rubble so, this base is near impossible to find. However, as mentioned, it seems to be a car of what was once an elongated machine, so perhaps beneath the layers of surrounding remains, there are similar shelters waiting to be discovered.
Changing:
Changing is a process that requires an incessant amount of willpower and energy from the changer. Varying from person to person, they might experience excruciating pain to mild discomfort to absolutely nothing at all during the shift between forms. Once starting the process, it takes about three seconds on average, and once started, the process cannot be reverted midway. Many Changers avert their eyes through the process as a courtesy, as it is somewhat disconcerting to see one's form rebel against its given nature. Changing with a broken bone or other injury is not recommended, as the process places unnecessary strain on the wound, and no one knows exactly what havoc these injuries will cause - and the pain is debilitating as well. Undoing the change partway is impossible. Many have tried to stop their transformation or manipulate the order in which their changes take place, but to this date, no one has succeeded.
As when changing from an animal to a human causes some difficulties with clothing, the Army possesses a special material. This cloth is durable yet retains an elastic quality, enabling it to shrink into a collar on an animal, and rolled down to resemble clothing upon return to human form. This material is so rare that only a few Changers outside of the upper echelon of the Army will possess it, so others have to make due with whatever they have available.
Mutants:
It is unsure why some strains of animals have morphed into these hideous, monstrous creatures. However, they are far more dangerous than any Changer. Adapting to survive in the new ruined world... maybe they've lost something as well.
The most common type is that of a deer. Not the pacifist, flighty animals from the past, they have evolved to grow large, twisted, and cruelly barbed antlers, specifically designed to rend and rip through flesh. Although they still possess their speed, their hooves have strengthened and sharpened greatly. Their eyes are sunken now, from a lifetime of hunting those that used to be their predators. Somewhere in the past, their ancestors have interbred with giraffes and horses, leaving them with a thick mane and a longer, almost swollen neck.
In the air, a large winged mutated bird flies. With blood red plumage, and a screeching caw, their very shadow can send the shivers into even bravest of the Changers. They can be seen diving down into the city, and coming up with a squirming object in their talons. There are still stories these rocs, as they are called, taking live Changers into the air before dropping them down from heights. Otherwise, the screams from their victims being ripped into pieces rock Aethes every now and then. They possess two heads, both armed with a sharp beak, and more frightening, both heads have been seen fighting in some occurrences. Their talons are sharp and black in color, and these rocs possess three on each foot, six in total.
But they aren't the worst that are out there. Frequently seen is a type of beast that resembles a mix between the lion and various other predators. With strength that rivals that of even the strongest Changers, they are spotted with faint cloud-like designs. Their bite has been known to kill instantly and many a Changer has lost their life at its feet. A thick lion's mane surrounds black eyes for both genders, and a fierce, tooth-filled maw. Luckily, these are seen much less commonly than the mutated deer, but there are rumors about how these mutants have attained a taste for Changers in particular. They normally prey upon the deer, but can be seen eating anything that moves. No longer the king of beasts, but they still possess their feared power.
However, most Changers don't get to see more than a shadow lurking in the ruins, and those who have don't live to tell the tale...
And there are even more. Other types have been spotted around the city, but with no survivors, nothing is known about their appearance. When arriving at the scene, all that is ever left are the largest blood-stained tracks that the Skinwalkers have ever seen. There is never any bodies - only bloodstains mark the final resting places of these unfortunate souls.
Technology:
Electricity? Digital? What are those? They are things of legend, so obscure that even names of such objects have been forgotten. There is no source of power in this new world, all the grids having failed far before any memory's reach. Yes, one might be able to find the shell of a battery, the remnant of that mysterious device called a camera, but they're little more than paperweights and other junk to the inhabitants of this new world. The closest thing to technology they possess are handguns and rifles. Pure mechanics - no convenient energy, but even then, the army is in possession of most of the remaining firearms, and the last remnants of ammunition are jealously stored.
This is the world they live in.
Changers are those who can shift between the form of a human and that of an animal, but there are differences and rules regarding this strange ability.
Some Changers are more animalistic as humans than others.
Some Changers are more human as animals than others.
What traits carry over to either side seems rather difficult to define, but here it is described to the best of anyone's ability.
Lupus - More common than quite a few other kinds, Lupus are the strongest and toughest of the Changers, usually being able to take several more hits and lift things far greater than other Changers. Their senses, especially their sense of smell and hearing, are increased, and they are generally good at tracking. Adversely, their exquisite sense of smell is also a weakness, with Lupus Changers having fallen unconscious from overpowering stenches. They also have a limited sense of balance compared to other Changers, and find climbing difficult to learn. They also generally have a red-green colour blindness, thought to be inherited from their changed form, which is that of a dog. Differentiation between breeds is unclear, as most tend to take the form of a mix of several different sorts with a large variation in builds, coats, and temperaments. However in general, they are larger, sturdier boned creatures with strong jaws and large muscle mass. Rather, put more simply, they tend to be mutts. They tend to be at odds with Miaos due to conflicting animalistic natures, and are naturally untrusting of Raposas.
Miao - Don't let the cutesy name fool you, these Miao Changers turn into feral cats. They are one of the more nimble Changers, at least when it comes to their feet. There are isolated occurences where there have been Miao Changers, known as Greater Miao, that have turned into smaller wildcats, such as lynxes, ocelots, and fishing cats. They are often very nimble on their feet, being good at jumping and keeping their balance in adverse conditions. They also extremely good night vision and the ability to hear a long distance, as well as able to properly hear a greater variety of frequencies, even more so than their Lupus cousins. In return, they are hypersensitive to movement, often enough to cause distraction. Their palette can also be a problem for them, with inability to taste sweetness and various obscure things being poisonous to them when they otherwise wouldn't be. Such things include Easter lilies, large amounts of garlic and various types of painkillers.
Aveis - A smaller and rarer Changer, the Aveis changers take the form of a bird - usually various songbirds or scavengers. Every-so-often, an odd small bird of prey is found, deemed 'Larger Aveis' by the local Changer population. Their human form is usually marked by features mixed in their hair or on their body. Like their changed form, Aveis possess lightweight bones, a high metabolic rate, and efficient breathing. Although this makes them lighter than a majority of Changers, this gives them have a certain susceptibility to poison, a larger appetite compared to others, and brittle bones. In their avian form, most possess the ability to fly, although the aptitude of using this form of transportation depends on both practice and the species. Aveis possess the strongest eyesight of all the Changers and are able to see ultraviolet light and a wide spectrum of colors. However, their sense of smell and taste are muted due to their dependence on sight. They tend to be scared of Miaos and Ariads, due to incombility of species.
Reban - An unusual changer, those of the Reban kind are able to take the form of a raccoon. They are the most dextrous of the changers, being naturally quick and nimble with their fingers. How this skill is used differs between individuals, but it is well known that many thieves find root in their Reban nature. In general, their changed forms have poor eyesight, but have superior hearing in compensation. They also possess an enhanced sense of smell, although it is not on par with those of Lupus or Raposas. The human forms of Reban are marked with the same dexterity and hyper-sensitivity in their hands as their animal counterparts, but often also retain physical qualities such as the blunt claws or the coarse nature or hues of their fur in their hair. In changed form, they are skilled climbers and fair swimmers, but their physical speed itself is lacking due to the shortness of their limbs. However, this is of a lesser concern, as a raccoon's stealth in the trees compensates for its lack of agility. Such characteristics overall make Rebans good survivors, particularly since most take on the diet of their changed form - anything edible. Rebans are often distrusted due to the negative associations with their kind.
Ariad - Perhaps the strangest of all Changers, the Ariads are able to take the form of spiders, more often venomous than not. Stranger still, many retain much of their animal advvantages in their human form. Some are able to scale walls, while others retain weak venom in their teeth, and a rare few can spin silk as a human. For these reasons, most Ariads are reluctant to change into their tiny, vulnerable, but more deadly forms. However, these retained advantages mean that they also retain the disadvantages of their changed form. Ariads, be it in changed or human form, lack a clear sense of balance or speed, and they rely solely on eyesight to determine orientation. Without their vision, they are unable to tell which side is up, but they also have rather poor eyesight in general.
Raposa - Another rare and unusual Changer, the Raposa can take the form of foxes of many kinds. They are naturally independent and cunning, inheriting the reputably sly nature of their changed forms. This, coupled with their agile form and keen senses, make them skilled hunters and accomplished survivalists. Their eyes are sensitive to movement, although not as much as Miaos, and a sensitive nose, although lacking in comparison to those of some kinds of Lupus. They are stealthy in their own right and can navigate with ease in the dark, but their physical strength is diminished compared to humans and some other Changers. As an instinct inherited from their changed form, Raposa are naturally wary of Lupus.
Murin - The Murin have the ability to change into a mouse or a rat. For this reason, they are quite possibly the most mistreated of all Changers. They are often deemed prey by animals and other Changers alike, and also bullied for their minute stature. In general, the humans resemble their changed form - small, frail, and physically unimpressive. However, their lack of natural defenses give them one great benefit: they have no equal when it comes to disappearing. Their small form and agility give Murin the ability to hide from predators, from all enemies, and if they choose, easily keep watch on others should it come to that. Understandably, most have an aversion to Miaos.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 13 authors
Kiarna's attention was barely on the speech. Why should it be? Yes, it was 'exciting' and 'uplifting' (Tenko was doing surprisingly well today), but it was nothing new. All the information presented in it was common knowledge. 'Brilliantly' phrased, perhaps, but still common knowledge.
But then again, all speeches were common knowledge. Interesting stuff was never shouted from a platform for the city and whoever else might be around to hear. Interesting stuff was picked up when those speaking thought nobody else was listening. Not that she went looking for that information; delirious mumblings of the sick or wounded, whispers outside her tent while she stitched a soldier up and his companions waited to see if he was okay and discussed the mission he was hurt on or their newest assignment, people talking because they either thought she wasn't paying attention, or didn't care.
She was no spy, though. Not for either side. Any interesting tidbits she picked up were stashed away to be used only for her own private purposes, which was usually as small as asking for extra bandages or salve during a week she knew many changers would be on special missions. Honestly, she could do without the data, but since she had it, why not make it useful?
Realizing by the applause about her that the speech was over, Kiarna gave a polite bit of clapping herself, and was then startled by a figure leaping from a roof and beginning to speak. After recognizing the changer, she immediately wrote this off as normal behavior. Such things could be expected from Bell. She crossed her arms and watched his performance with carefully measured amusement and apathy in her expression.

He stopped, looking at Artemisha, Leila and Kai. He smiled slightly, though it didn't even look like a smile. He hided his hands behind his back, biting his tongue so the pain wouldn't show through. He needed to be strong. He needed to show he was strong. Pain wasn't allowed at all for him and so he wouldn't show it. Slowly, he walked passed them but stopped, hesitating. He wasn't sure wether to tell them or not but he knew they would find out anyway. ''Hello.''
The awkward smile. He was hiding his hands, his jaw moved...possibly biting his tongue.Right...very shifty.
Artemisha clucked her tongue a little.
"Hello" Okay...at least he was speaking.
"Seems like you didn't find anyone...Darvo.Did anything happen?"
She wasn't normally this straight-forward,but the lack of companions and the fact that Darvo might be hiding something...was like a thorn in her side.

He raised his head and looked back at Artemisha, his smile now gone and showing, for the first time, pain. Slowly, got his hands from behind his back to Artemisha so she could see. He didn't want to remove the piece of fabric and hesitated at that point, thinking wether to remove it or not. He dediced to remove it after a while. Slowly, he removed it before looking away again, not wanting to see the big gash on his palm. And the blood still dripping from the wound, now on the ground. He didn't want to look. He wasn't scared of blood or for the wound, but for the respond of the others.

"Kai...hand me the bandages,if you don't have them,my bag's down back in the sleeping quarters.And...do we still have enough clean water to wash his wound clean?"
She looked at the gash on Darvo's hand again.
"It won't be serious as long as we clean it up and prevent it from getting infected." she assured him gently. This was the only time she could actually talk to Darvo normally, when he was a patient.

Artemisha asked and Kai shook her head. "All I have is some clean cloth. I didn't bring any water with me either." she replied blankly. "But we could wrap it up and then when we get back to the base do something more for it." She suggested. It would be a ten minute walk to and from the base if she ended up going back for some bandages. Kai looked at Darvo, who seemed to be in deep thought. How can you just stand their silently while Artemisha is helping you? Why would you try to hide something like this from us? Your own pack members? How stupid and arrogant can you get!? Kai wanted to yell at him, but she kept a calm, doll-like appearance as she looked at him, her eyes moving down to where the wound on his palm was. You're such an idiot sometimes.., she thought to herself, then pulled out a brown piece of cloth and handed it out to Artemisha. "I could go back for the bandages, but this will keep it from bleeding too much." She said, glancing back at Darvo before walking past him, making her way back through the ruble towards the base.

Her eyes were fully focused on the bleeding gash,as was her attention. She didn't even feel the tension in the air between Kai and Darvo. That wasn't of any concern to her at the moment.'Emi,wounds should be tended to first, and other things later.'That was what her 'father' used to tell her when she got injured. She remembered him braving the snowy winter day while dealing with her scrapped knee, without getting any warm clothing on at all.
'Stupid, stupid Misha, you're an idiot. Why are you thinking of things like that?' she thought, mentally slapping herself.
Kai handed a piece of brown cloth, telling her to use it to keep the wound from bleeding. She looked at Kai and smiled before she walked away to get the bandages.
'She's more thoughtful than I am at this...she really should've been the Medic.' Artemisha thought silently to herself.
She heard Darvo heave a sigh, and looked at him.Their eyes met,and almost instantly,Artemisha glanced away.
"...There's no water to wash your wound. So just bear with this for a minute." she told him with a reassuring smile before starting to lick away the blood.Sure, saliva had bacteria, but it also worked as a minor blood stopper. That was the best she could do,clean the blood, while preventing too much bleeding.Once most of the blood was cleared, she spat the red, metallic tasting liquid away before dabbing the wound with the brown cloth Kai gave her. When she was sure that the bleeding wouldn't start again, and that most of the saliva had been wiped away, she used the back of her hand to wipe her mouth.
"Um...I..."
Artemisha had just realized what she had done and was now wondering if Darvo approved of it or not.She didn't dare look him in the eyes.
"I...sorry..."

After a few minutes of watching the upper echelon straggling in to the scene, it ought to be time for the speech to start. He caught a glimpse of a taller individual wearing a hat, in their city of shorter Aveis and Murin. Perhaps it was one of the Miao or Raposa that had been denied entrance to the Army. It was in Quadrant III, North corner, he noted.
Tenko began his speech, and still, nothing happened. The speech was better than he had thought, and it certainly was inspirational. Liron was getting a little bored of circling up in the sky, but the Pack might just appear - his coworkers were all too exposed up there on the stage of theirs. He banked again to the right, before scanning the horizon. It was just like a mutant to appear in the middle of this gathering to pick up some of the easier prey. It wasn’t everyday that Murin were gathered outside in the open - they were just making a target out of themselves.
Just to see Hiibel - his spy who was supposed to be on lookout duty - do some sort of half-fall half-leap onto the stage. He nearly forgot to flap his wings and for a few seconds, his wings locked, and he fell down towards the ground. What in the world was that Miao thinking? He was supposed to be there if anything happened - not being the one that they needed to stop. He - he certainly took things to extremes.
Liron caught himself just in time to escape becoming a mass of shattered bones on the ground, but even then, he was too far to the ground for comfort. Hiibel was on the stage with his normal cheery attitude, and started to mock Tenko’s speech, “Ladies and gentlemen, an appendix I do give.” Liron could already tell that this would be a disgrace to the Army and his other spies. A few minutes of his mindless drivel later, and when Liron was attempting to curtail the murderous intent in his eyes, “Applaud once again for our leader.” the idiot Miao started to clap.
He could’ve murdered him right then and there. Or at the very least, gouged his eyes out. Liron would be getting in so much trouble… he would be lucky if Tenko decided to keep him alive after this. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he realized that this would be the best time for the Rebels to do something - there was nothing better than adding injury to insult after all.
Regaining his aerial grace, he swooped upwards, before affixing his subordinate with a glare. A glare that foretold of a lashing or other such punishment in the future. Ah, Liron was going to be killed… His subordinate’s action was a mar on his record… If they thought that he harbored rebels, then he would end up fighting in the pit for the rest of his life.
Maybe if he was lucky, he should not die in the first fight - but maybe not. Probably not.

"But!Darvo!We haven't bandaged up your wound!Wait!" Artemisha yelled out,following him quickly.He was quick...and he had a headstart.
'Stupid! What do you think you'll accomplish if you can't even let that hand of yours heal?Every little thing matters!' she thought angrily as she chased after the white haired leader.

A knife slowly cut into his face, and blood started welling out. Another cut followed. Then the knife slowly approached his eye.
Kuril opened his eye. It was that damn memory again, the day he lost his other eye. He sat up and put one of his paws over his empty eye socket, trying to rub an itch away that was non existent. He'd seen Kirian about it before, but there was nothing much she could do, or for that matter anyone could do. As he slowly woke up, he also realized a pungent, rotting smell was filling up in his cave. Glancing over at the other side of his cave, he saw the rotting, decomposing of his kill. Of course it would be rotting, it was sweltering outside, and it was little better even in the relatively dark cave Kuril had made for himself just outside the Fortress. Growling, Kuril padded over to the rotting corpse and dragged it out into the sun, temporaliy blinding him as he adjusted to the bright light. Kuril dumped the corpse into a random pile of rubble and he changed into his human form. Even in his human form, Kuril was still sweating like a pig, if pigs could sweat. Oh well..beats fur, he thought. There was a general commotion as he approached the Fortress, something big and important. Ah, right. There was a big speech by the Leader today, and apparently it was going in full swing. The guards let Kuril in as soon as they saw him, having heard enough stories about what he did than to follow through with procedure. Kuril ran through the crowd, trying to make it onto to the stage. Hopefully he still had time to get on there without looking like too much of a fool. When he got close enough through, he realized that the speech was ending, and one of the spies was making a fool out of himself, well more of mocking the Leader. A smile started to curl up on Kuril's face under the mask. Such mocking talk was typically punished, and sometimes they got really unlucky and were landed with a session with Kuril. After much screaming and pleading, they were released and typically refused to speak about what had occured and typically never cracked such a joke again.
Quietly, he skirted the now departing cloud and quickly got onto the walkway, giving a disapproving look at the spy. He'd forgotton his name, but he did remember that he was a very... interesting person from his talks with the Spymaster. Walking up to the so called "inner circle", he apologized saying. " Sorry I'm late and I missed the speech, I had some business I needed to take care of." Honestly, there wasn't any reason Kuril felt that he needed to apologize for, but it seemed needed , and it was some common courtesy and respect Servin had drilled into him. Kuril knew he couldn't get away with much, not being that high on the totem pole, and with a section leader who could get most secrets out in a heartbeat.
The setting changes from The Fortress to Aethes
The morning sun was approaching the peak of its daily journey, bathing Aethes with its light and warmth. Even though most of the city was gathered near the fortress to hear the Tenko's speech, some eccentric citizens took the opportunity to search the ruins with hopes of finding a hidden treasure amid the ruin. One unfortunate soul had picked today to search in the wrong place at the wrong time. One man was searching through a small pile of debris when he heard faint clicking noises from a tunnel made from the walls of a building that had long since collapsed. The scavenger, a Miao, gazed into the passage, straining his ears to hear what was approaching. The light of the day prevented his gaze from piercing the darkness as well as it normally would have. It would turn out to be his demise. The incredibly faint sounds of breathing could be heard as the thing drew closer. The clicking sound grew louder and louder along with the sound of heavy footsteps. Had he been able to see into the passage, he would have noticed two white eyes that glinted in the darkness. "H-h-hello?", the man stammered. No reply came from within the darkness. His hair stood on end. Every instinct told him to run, and yet he stayed. Silence. The footsteps had stopped. A roar exploded from the tunnel. The man had no time to flee before a massive mutant charged him and knocked him to the ground. A short scream was all that he could manage to get out before the massive mutant ripped out his throat with its massive claws. The mutant began to dig into its most recent victim before it stopped to smell the passing wind. Food... That one thought crossed its mind before it stood upright to find the source of the scent.
The shambling mutant closely resembled a grizzly bear, but that was a stretch. It easily stood at nine feet tall on its hind legs. Its short dust-colored coat was stained red with the aftermath of its recent victim. It's long paws (more similar to hands than paws) were covered in blood and its three inch long claws were eager to draw more blood. The massive canines that protruded from beneath its lips had a faint sheen from the creatures saliva. The creature was born to end lives.
The beast had managed to follow the scent trail all the way to the open ground where the majority of citizens had gathered for the speech. As it entered the area, only one woman noticed its entrance. Her eyes widened in terror as they met with the white eyes of the mutant. It was a moment that seemed to last for an eternity. The moment was shattered as the beast roared and the woman screamed at the same time, sending the crowd into a panic. The crowd ran in every direction possible, trying to flee as fast as they could from the monstrosity while at the same time trying to not get trampled. As they scattered, the mutant dropped to all fours and charged into the crowd to claim its meal. Those unfortunate enough to be caught in its path were knocked over and maimed. Darvo was one of the unfortunate ones. As the crowd scattered, he had just enough time to turn around to see the mutant charging towards him. Before he could flee, the massive mutant slammed into him, launching him a short distance before falling flat on his back on the ground. There was no time to properly recover before the mutant returned. One swipe of its paw left four ragged gashes in Darvo's midsection. Shock set in immediately as Darvo saw his blood spray across the dirt in an arc. Two more swipes to the stomach and chest sent more blood splashing in the dirt. An oppressive weight seemed to settle over Darvo's limbs. He knew death had come to claim him. The mutant's roar sounded muffled and far away, as if it was at a great distance. The last thing he could feel was the creature sinking its massive jaws into his neck and twisting sharply. Then blackness...
The mutant roared in triumph at its successful kills. It eagerly ripped chunks of flesh from its most recent victims and began to feast. Blood smeared its front and dyed its light brown fur a dark crimson. Another triumphant roar was sounded as it moved onto the next victim. The only sounds that could be heard were the wet squelches as chunks of flesh were eaten by the mutant.
The setting changes from Aethes to The Fortress
Sevrin stood there, a tight smile on his face and his arms casually folded behind his back. He respected the leader, yes, but right now didn't seem like a time to be stiff and stoic. He listened to Tenko speak to the crowd briefly before they lit up in approval. Upon hearing Atra's comment, he didn't plan on responding, mostly because his mind was kind of tuned into the speech (he liked speeches, for more or less obvious reasons), and secondly because there wasn't much to say. No matter how much it seemed to offend Lorelai, he had the feeling Atra's comment was at least partly true. The majority of them don't know what work goes into making the Fortress run the way it should. What it takes to keep them, at least, somewhat comfortable. Then again, with all they do for the soldiers and other changers underneath Tenko, Farren, himself, even, the least they could do was cheer for their leader when he made a speech.
That's what Sevrin would do.
And that's why he put on his best smile when their leader came back, relieved to have had his speech go over so well. Did they cheer out of obligation or a genuine like for their dear Tenko? It could be a mixed bunch, but it didn't matter. With that pack possibly planning a move, any Army soldiers who didn't particularly like Tenko could also try something with all the confusion.
"Mhmm, it went very well, sir," Sevrin nodded approvingly. At least Tenko got up and made a speech. Didn't falter or stutter. God, being who he was, he hated when changers did either of those.
Just after saying that, he heard the sound of someone speaking again - loud enough to address a crowd - and then start clapping. Who was idiotic enough to do that? Sevrin didn't want to think about that. Surely, someone would deal with him. Maybe not right now, though. It was a good enough distraction for someone to spot some pack members hanging around.
Or maybe hurl something at the speaker's head from a high distance. Sevrin wanted to go up to the railing and see who it was, but a very familiar voice turned his head in the other direction. So his one-eyed friend had made it to the party after all. His face turned into a grin as he walked over to the second interrogator and looked him over. He didn't look like he had been busy, he looked tired. He'd ask him later. "Morning, Kuril," Sevrin gave him a quick nod, then looked around him. "Glad you could make it, though, you should really work on your timing. You missed a brilliant speech from Tenko." Most would probably realize his teasing words towards the end, but he couldn't help but make a joke amidst the many distractions and less-than-serious behaviors. Like an unconscious thing. He glanced at Lorelai for a split second.
He was still waiting for that clapping to cease. Now that he remembered it, it kind of annoyed him.
After the crowd quieted down, Tenko heard a singular person still clapping after his speech. The possibility of a rebel boldly taking such an action in public was unlikely at best, but still possible. He considered stepping back up the ladder when the individual started speaking, but instead asked about the speaker's identity a sentry that was currently in charge of overlooking the crowd.
"Sir, the identity of the individual remains known, but he did leap down from one of the vantage points where we typically station a lookout. I'd rather not think it to be true, but it's possible he's one of us, sir."
"You have my gratitude, soldier.", replied Tenko curtly. The tone of voice combined with the actual dialogue was at the very least insulting. He was almost sure of the fact that it was a rebel trying to incite discontent in the crowd. Grinding his teeth, Tenko ascended a few steps so that he was able to see a majority of the crowd. And the individual that was clapping. His eyes narrowed in displeasure behind his sunglasses. He knew the man. And as unfortunate as it was, he was indeed part of the Army. A subordinate of Liron's if he remembered correctly. He waved the same sentry over again.
"Sir?", came the woman's reply along with a salute.
"When the Spymaster returns from his mission, give him this message: Get that moron in line or he goes to the ring. Against me. And there will be no mercy in that." Tenko's tone was as cold as a glacier.
"Y-yes, sir!" The woman was slightly distressed at the menacing aura surrounding Tenko, but returned to her post.
Tenko was about to leave the stairs again when a terrified scream split the air. And then a terrifying roar. Wasting no time, Tenko leaped up the last few steps just in time to see the crowd scatter before a massive thing. It's very appearance made his stomach clench as his body wrestled with the decision to fight or flee. Barely a second passed before the monster charged the crowd, slaughtering those misfortunate enough to have been in its way. It's last victim, who was most assuredly dead, was the beast's midday meal. The sight nearly made Tenko sick. Attracting the attention of the other soldiers in the area, he issued the thought that was undoubtedly on all of their minds.
"Soldiers! Destroy that abomination before it hunts down more civilians! Now!"

Out of breath by the time he stumbled onto the scene, it probably wasn’t Clive’s brightest idea to stop breathing when he saw what happened. Or maybe it was that monstrous roar that set his ears ringing that did the trick, but it was most likely the sight of Darvo being so easily mauled to death. His potato-stuffed shoulder bag slipped from his arm as he tried to utter an intelligible sentence. Only one colorful word made it out properly. It was followed by another – his body wasn’t able to catch up to what his mind was starting to grasp. Their leader was dead?
Even from his distant position, he could see the crimson liquid dye the mutant’s teeth, stain the dark fur of its front… some of it was Darvo’s. Clive grimaced, and subconsciously took a step away from the sight, but he couldn’t pull his gaze away. He vaguely recalled something he’d once heard about the morbid fascination humans have with death. It seemed that it remained true with changers as well. However, be it fascination or shock, he was grateful to it for one thing – his rapid pulse was drowning out the painful screams of the other citizens. He vaguely registered some idiot dashing towards the beast. It wasn’t until she morphed into a black fox he realized who it was and regained his senses. Kai was charging straight towards that monstrous mutant.
“Kai, don’t be stupid!” he shouted, but clearly he wasn’t heard over the noise of everyone else. All the screaming and the roaring grated at his ears and it was difficult to form a coherent thought. “Kai!” he tried again when the mutant slammed a giant paw into her form and sent her flying. That idiot raposa! She was determined to get herself killed! He watched as she tumbled and slowly rose back to her paws. She was going to keep fighting. Conflicted, Clive tried to think… should he run forward to help? ‘And do what? Give the mutant a better meal?’ He could try to drag her away from the beast, ‘but it doesn’t look like she’s gonna listen…’
When had she entered the city, anyway? She’d been at the base when he left… did she come after the mutant had arrived? Before? The monster had come from the rubble…
… Were the others okay?
“Fine! Get yourself killed on your own,” Clive shouted, grabbing his bag before clamoring down from the concrete block he’d scaled earlier. From the rubble, he leapt onto the main path. Following suit with several other civilian changers, he dashed away from the mayhem. Fortunately from past experience, he knew how to navigate a crowd. He could easily slip through the breaks in the flow of people. He didn’t have to worry about Kai too much. She knew her limits well enough… ‘Let’s hope for her sake.’
He didn’t worry too much about some soldier or something tailing him back to the rebel base – all forces were probably focused on that blasted mutant. All the civilian changers were too preoccupied in getting away that Clive was able to break away from the main path with relative ease. From there, it was simple to find the easiest route back to the base. His frantic pace slowed, until he was just ambling across the terrain. Then all of a sudden, the city scenery turned to one of dust and pebbles – it wasn’t a gradual change. The Ruins to the Rubble. As he rounded the corner of one particularly weathered building, suddenly all he saw were mounds of concrete dust and metal fragments. To anyone else, this terrain would be impossible to navigate… but Clive wasn’t just anyone. He was a part of the Pack.
“Leila! Artemisha? The mutant didn’t get’ya, did it?” he called, climbing over one of many piles of debris. He was slowly making his way towards where the base was buried.“Hey! Answer if you’re alright!”

Lorelai almost twitched as she heard the mocking voice of the little spy. Tenko would kill him. The young woman shook her head slightly. She had talked to Hibel a few times and he was quite amusing. She would have to try to calm Tenko down. It was very insulting and she didn't blame him for getting angry... but Hiibel was still a good spy that did his job fairly well. She glanced sharply at the Liron at the sky. No doubt he would be almost as angry as Tenko.
She was about to head back inside when the most gruesome noise stopped her in her tracks. The noise made her cringe in pain as the loud sounds invaded her skull. She looked up and clenched her fists as she saw a large beast devouring the remains of its last kill. Who had it been? Was it one of them? She wasn't sure and that made her nervous.
There were children down there. The thought put her in action and she climbed down the ladder. The soldiers would surely be able to take the beast on. They had done so numerous times. But the young ones were defenseless. They weren't trained and were weak from malnourishment. It would be cowardly to watch safely from above when she could be down there helping. As she went down, she glanced at a couple of the younger soldiers around her.
"Get the young and the elderly away." She ordered, her usual gentle voice ringing with authority. The crowd was starting to panic and they would end up trampling themselves to death if they continued. As soon as she touched the dusty ground, she scooped up a small boy and handed him to a healthy looking woman. Children had to be protected. They were the future.

Kora leaned against one of the supports, folding her arms and regarding the rest of the leader's inner circle. Apparently no-one was going to acknowledge her.
"Nope. Don't strain yourselves or anything. I'll just stand here and talk to myself shall I? Hey there Kora, what're you doing running late? Oh well I managed to catch a lizard today. Wow, a lizard? That's pretty impressiv-" she was interrupted by the carnage that erupted down in the crowd. Some variety of large, nasty mutant that was tearing one individual to shreds.
Before she'd even fully registered, she'd begun to change, her outfit tearing and shredding along the joints as her chest cavity and shoulders expanded, and thick fur burst out of the pores of her skin.
Moments later, the huge canid leapt down and broke into a charge in the direction of the animal, barreling towards it at a charge before leaping upwards to latch her teeth into the beast's jugular. Normally she might have dragged it out a little longer, maybe taken the opportunity to showboat, but it was a bit of an emergency, and everyone was watching. It wasn't time for messing around, though it had never really entered her mind that the beat might prove to be anything of a challenge....then again it never did. The concept of danger didn't really seem to be something that Kora was familiar with, and she simply dived into any sort of combat situation, regardless of the opponent.
She endeavored to lock her jaw around the thing's throat, and remain there, hoping to sever a major blood vessel. It seemed like the best way to go for a kill, and put her head out of reach of the thing's jaws, which was always a plus.
Caddie Hallow - The Fortress
The dove on the wire had managed, very much to fade into the background, something she was rather pleased about. Apparently the assembled Skinwalkers that made up this group weren't really on the lookout for spies.
Things started to go wrong however when some of the pack showed up in the crowd. Why hadn't she heard anything about this? No-one had told her that anyone else was going to be there... The dove shifted from foot to foot, confused by the turn of events.
This got even worse however when the beast arrived, and she looked up in time to see one of the pack members getting torn to shreds by the mutant. The pigeon set out a panicked shriek of a noise and fluttered from its perch, flapping its ragged looking wings in shock, sending out a small flurry of loose feathers. It was, unfortunately, a very un-dovelike reaction to the situation, but it was hard to retain her composure considering.
