The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 2 authors
In the bathroom, Pendley was carefully running her hands through her hair, working to hide the bruises and scars that lined her neck.
Annabelle entered the bathroom and walked right past Pendley, disappearing into a stall where she changed her bandage. When she emerged again, she washed her hands next to the blonde. "You okay?" She asked softly.
Pendley jumped at the sound of Annabelle's voice and whipped around, her hands flying to cover up what she hadn't yet concealed. "I'm fine," she said quietly yet sharply. "Really." Turning from her, she pulled her hair down to cover her neck, flushing lightly.
Annabelle, not stable enough to pursue the girl after being rejected so sharply, simply nodded and turned to exit the bathroom, tugging at her shirt sleeves. She jumped when she saw one of the figures blocking her exit. Its mangled body was right in the middle of the door, and as tall as it, too. It was a black, but such a deep black that it shouldn't have existed. It was like the night sky, or space itself, and there was a strange blurred effect around the edges that looked as if it was swirling. Like it was getting ready to suck her in. She was frozen in place, staring at it with her mouth hanging open slightly.
"Annabelle~" It sang in a voice she recognized, a voice she never wanted to relive, but continued to almost every day. She collapsed, hitting the floor with a frighteningly loud thud. She curled up on herself, the figure gone once her eyes were closed but she could feel it. And still, the voice ran through her head, "Annabelle, Annabelle! Just relax, I'm not going to hurt you... Just enjoy it..."
Pendley flinched and turned at the thump. Alarmed by the sight of Annabelle on the floor, she scurried over, wide-eyed, unsure what to do. Only when she realized that the girl was cowering did she look around, unsure what was scaring the girl. "A..Annabelle?" she said softly, panic evident in her voice. Then, a little more boldly, she looked around, innocent face portraying something of fear and anger. "Whoever is scaring Annabelle, go away!"
Annabelle couldn't hear Pendley, or sense her presence. The voices got louder, like someone was shouting in her ear, and then stopped completely. She laid there, dazed for a moment. Her throat felt sore. Her arms felt sore. Why... why did it leave? It never just left like that.
Surprise and alarm set Pendley's lungs racing. She took a step back, uncomfortable that she'd spoken in such a way; at home, she'd never get away with such a thing. Shaking lightly, she crouched down beside Annabelle, placing a hand on her arm and giving her a light shake. "You okay?" The girl was so pretty up close it almost embarrassed her to be so close. She shifted slightly, unsure with her closeness.
"I'm fine..." Annabelle's voice was hoarse. She pulled herself up, hair a mess. "Um. Thanks. You helped a lot more than you realize." What was it? When she was with Kade, and now Pendley, they didn't bother her. They bothered her any other time, regardless of who she was with.
"You're welcome," Pendley replied, though it was more of a question than a reply in her book. What just happened? Deciding to leave the incident to itself, she reached up, smoothed Annabelle's hair, and took a step back. "Still hungry?" she asked, eyes focusing on the lunchroom down the hall.
Annabelle nodded, feeling warmth rush to her cheeks. Having someone like Pendley caring for her felt like having a mom. She wasn't lying about being hungry, but she knew she wouldn't actually keep the food down.
Feet shuffling slightly, Pendley led the way back towards the lunch room, glancing back every now and then to make sure Annabelle was following along alright.
She shuffled close by her back, like a baby duckling following its mother. She instantly felt better when she saw Kade, and she hurried ahead to sit by him. This time, she left out the distance between them, so her side was against his. He felt so warm, even through his clothes. It felt so comforting.
"Hi," Pendley said shortly, her cheeks pink. Noticing how Annabelle sat so close to Kade, she decided to follow suit, though she still placed a few inches between her and Carter.
Carter tried to casually cover his mouth with his hand, Ugh, do guys do this? Does it look cool?, in an effort to hide his enormously dorky grin from the blonde. Just having her sit closer to him made his insides flutter. "Hi," he said softly.
Carter was behaving different - not that Pendley was complaining. She blushed and looked back down at what was left of the food that Annabelle shared. "How much longer is lunch?" she asked quietly.
When the bell rang, and to her own surprise, Annabelle stuffed the rest of what she was eating in her mouth. Her cheeks puffed out like a chipmunk. She was probably hungrier than she'd even realized.
Kade gave a laugh at Annabelle's chipmunk cheeks. "You're adorable, you know that?" he said with another laugh.
(shall we skip to the end of the school day soon?)
Annabelle's inflated cheeks turned pink, and she chewed and swallowed quickly.
[TIMESKIP!]
Carter had been pondering his entire last hour how he was possibly going to invite Pendley over without sounding like a creep. Truth is, he was full-frontal flipping out. He was tapping his pen and foot all throughout class, much to the dismay of his peers and teacher who chastised him, though he found himself doing it only a few moments afterwards. When the bell rang, he very nearly knocked his desk over.
On the other side of the hallway, Kade was escaping the hordes of people with little trouble - his height and popularity seemed to make people get out of his way. His eyes fell upon Pendley as she struggled out of the class across the hall. Wading through the students towards her, he provided a shield against the streams of people.
"Looking for Carter?" he asked, leaning in closer so he could speak above the noise.
A simple nod was her response.
"I'm sure he's heading this way. Don't worry too much," he smiled and placed a comforting hand on the top of her head. "I'm going to go collect Annabelle. You stay safe, alright?" Ruffling her hair, he navigated around her and headed towards Annabelle's last class.
Her last class was on the opposite side of the building's as Kade's, sadly. She was also slow in navigating through the hallway, mostly because everyone would simply bump into her without caring.
Kade finally found Annabelle's dark hair in the swarm of students. Picking up his pace, he weaved through the students and finally caught up to her, his hand finding her shoulder. "Hey, sorry I'm late," he said with a huff.
She smiled instantly when he came into contact with her. They had begun to return while he was gone. "You're not late," She reassured him. "Right on time."
Kade let out a sigh of relief. "Good," he replied wholeheartedly. "By the way, did you drive here? Or do you want a ride home? I've got nowhere to be and I'd love to give you a lift back to your place."
"I normally walk," She said, a large smile spreading across her face. "But, um, we don't have to go to my house right away..." She trailed off. She had no idea where she was going with this, and this was so far out of her comfort zone, but she didn't want to leave him.
"Oh, okay," Kade said with a grin. "Well, we could go to the park, or to the library, or my house," he listed, searching for something that would perk her interest.
