She's 16. And yet she's been seeing them for as long as she can remember. Figures that follow her, that laugh at her, that taunt her and tell her to do things she doesn't want to do. She doesnt' know how to make the voices stop. She just wants them to stop! After so many years, she's grown depressed. She hurts herself in an attempt to release the pain she feels every day. But it's never quite enough.

5'6, skinny, not a very large chest. She has thick lips and dull blue eyes. Her hair is black and is often messy. She doesn't pay much attention to her appearance. She doesn't have the energy to. She's unfocused. Confused. Constantly hurting. She doesn't have friends because everyone sees her as strange, and even if she were to have friends, she'd probably push them away.

She lives with her mom and step-dad who both think she's making up her illnesses. She's not allowed to get treated for it. They don't give her medication. She avoids them at all costs. They don't pay attention to if she's gone, so she runs way a lot. She has a lot of strange habits, such as picking her fingernails and clawing herself.

Really, she's just a mess.

So begins...

Refusing to give up on what he'd set out to do, Kade followed the girl through the crowds of students. He kept a hand on her backpack so she couldn't get lost in the crowd, but made sure not to touch her; physical contact was obviously a no-no for her and the last thing he wanted to do was to scare her off.

Pendley's stomach did a backflip when he grasped her hand. She nervously eyed the sleeve of her cardigan, worried that it would drop low enough to reveal the bruises beneath. Heart racing, she glanced down at the floor, embarrassed and nervous, and above all else scared. "It's room 104," she said quietly just as the warning bell sounded. They only had two more minutes before they'd be late.

When they arrived at her next classroom, she glanced around anxiously to see if the figures had reappeared despite the brief break they had given her. She leaned close to the boy, so her mouth was close to his ear. To do this, she was on her tiptoes, but still.

"I just want you to know that you really shouldn't help me. If you drag me into your life your life is going to be a hell of a lot more confusing. I'm just a burden. I bring tragedy and confusion. I'm kind of crazy." Her voice was dark, with a hint of sadness. She didn't want him to leave. But she knew he had to. This wasn't fair to him.

"Okay," He said, his voice filled with as much warmth as he could muster. He really just wanted her to feel calm. He figured the only way to do that was to show her repeatedly and without a doubt his good intentions. If she was scared of him bailing, well, she'd be disproved eventually.

He led her to her class, her grip on her hand enough to keep their hands locked together but hardly putting much pressure down at all. When they got to her class with a minute to spare, he gave her an easygoing smile. "I really am here for you. I won't pressure you into anything, and if you really are dead set on me leaving you alone, I will. But just... think about it, okay? I'm right down the hall. Catch you later." He finished his mini speech as the bell rang and he quickly dispersed so as not to miss his class.

Kade was surprised that she made such an effort to speak into his ear. The fact that she'd raised herself up on her tiptoes was unbelievably cute and he had to chew his lip to keep from smiling like a creep. But as she began to speak, the smile itching at his lips faded and his heart gave a hefty, sad beat.

"I like crazy," he said with a gentle yet confident smile. "And I like being confused so I can figure everything out," he added and gave her a little wink. Releasing her backpack, he took a step back and gave her the best smile he could. "I'll see you after class," he said and headed for his own class, which was on the floor below.

Pendley watched as Carter headed back down the hallway towards his own classroom. She put a hand up to her chest, surprised by its wild beating. Biting her tongue, she slipped through the doorway and sat once more in the back of the room, hoping not to be noticed by anybody. Her hands played under her desk, her fingers dancing together in a habitually nervous way.

She looked after him out of the corner of her eye, head tilted to the side slightly. She found she had to hold back tears. She had a feeling this wouldn't end well. She just wish it never would have happened. She wish she didn't like him.

Because her heart was going to get crushed, and that was going to be the thing that finally made her kill herself.

He was smiling throughout his entire second period. Girls liked Carter before they knew about the cancer. Just like his mom, they didn't want to stick around long enough to get hurt. But Pendley seemed different. He liked her for so much more than her looks. There was something simply enticing about her. He wanted to figure her out. He wanted to be there for her.

And damn, he'd stick around long enough to help her.

Second period flew by fairly quickly. The teacher seemed more interested in telling her life story and squealing with all the cheerleaders than actually starting a lesson. In the back of the room, Kade chatted quietly with one of his friends, though his mind kept flickering back to the girl from first period.

Pendley doodled in her notebook while the teacher preached about the importance of history and how it would someday save the world from a third world war. Every now and then, she found herself drawing Carter - surprised by her subconscious, she kept scribbling him out, though instantly regretted the action every time.

After class, she found herself waiting outside the door for Kade. Her plan had been to cut him off completely and ignore him until he gave up, so why was she doing this? What was it about him?

He was at her class in a flash the minute class was out. He tried to look as casual as possible, and hide the fact that breathing was even more of a challenge than usual from the action. He didn't want to seem creepy or anything. He just also didn't want her to get away.

Yeah, that did sound kind of creepy.

Kade jogged up the stairs as quickly and as normally as possible. He tried to greet everybody who said hello, but the truth of the matter was that he was a bit too preoccupied to care. He made it to the classroom a minute late due to the crowds, but his breathing at least showed that he'd made an effort. He approached her as cautiously as possible so not to scare her.

"I just realized," he said between pants, "that I never got your name."

Pendley was the last to leave the classroom and was surprised to see Carter already there. Guilt pinched at her stomach, noticing that he was a little out of breath. "Don't push yourself too much," she said quietly, blushing as she spoke.

She looked at him for a long moment. She found herself smiling. A giant, real smile. It felt like forever since she'd smiled like that. "Annabelle. I'm Annabelle Carousel."

"Pfft, I'm fine," He said nonchalantly. "Don't worry about it. I was just excited to see you." He got a little red in the face at the last sentence, embarrassed that had slipped out.

Oh god. She was so cute when she smiled. Kade chewed his lip, knowing that color had risen in his cheeks. "I'm Kade. Bennet." He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to shake off the sudden jitters.

His words made her heart race a little faster. Pendley played with the scalloped collar on her blouse, trying to distract herself long enough for her pulse to stop racing. "Where's your next class?" she asked, her eyes on the floor. Her face was slowly filling with color and the thought of him noticing embarrassed her.

And so, classes passed like this. The pairs met up between each class. Annabelle found herself opening up more to Kade as the day went on, and Carter found himself falling more and more for Pendley.

Then lunch came.

Annabelle wandered into the lunch room, carrying a bag lunch. She had no idea where to sit. She normally just sat in the bathroom.

He found Pendley when lunch began. He'd learned her name last period, and had been playing it over in his mind over and over. It was a lovely name. "Pendley!" He said with enthusiasm. He loved saying her name.

Kade was eating a sandwich near back of the lunchroom. His mom always made an effort to make him something delicious to eat - he was never disappointed in her work. He looked up from his sandwich just in time to see Annabelle walk into the lunchroom. Lips curling into a small smile, he raised his hand up high and waved towards her, hoping she'd see him.

Pendley flinched at the sound of her own name. She spun around, scared, but then immediately relaxed at the sight of Carter. She gave him a little wave, color flooding her cheeks, but otherwise remained silent.

Annabelle took no hesitation in making her way towards him. He had become somewhat of a save haven for her. In a world where nobody understood or liked her, there was a boy who was trying to do both. It was nice. Really nice.

She sat down next to him, only about an inch of space between them. That thought made her suddenly slightly shy. She withdrew her sandwich slowly, eyes focused down.

He was absolutely overjoyed that he no longer made her nervous, but instead calmed her. That's exactly what he wanted to do. "So, milady, where would you like to sit?"

Kade didn't say much. He himself was a lover of silence, despite his popularity. Besides, she seemed more comfortable when he wasn't blabbering away at her. He ate his sandwich happily, his eyes surveying the rest of the lunchroom. Near the doorway, he noticed Carter standing with a small, feeble looking blonde. Having always liked Carter, he gave him a wave as well.

From the other side of the room, Pendley noticed the waving of a boy in the back. The movement distanced her thoughts from answering the question presented to her. She glanced up at Carter, assuming the boy was waving towards him. "A friend?" she asked quietly, head tilted to the side.

Carter waved back. "We've talked a few times. I think we just found a place to sit, though." With a smile he made her way towards the table, looking back to make sure Pendley was following him. Just because he could, though... "Come on, Pendley." God, he just loved saying her name!

Pendley followed quietly, avoiding the eyes of the two they were going to sit with. She found the boy at the table attractive, but there was a difference between looking and touching. Touching was bad. Touching hurt. Embarrassed by her own thoughts, she cast her gaze upon the ground, and then to the table when she sat.

"Hey, Carter!" Kade greeted warmly. "You two looked a bit lost; glad that you'll be keeping us company." His eyes flickered to the small blonde. He vaguely recognized her from middle school, but he couldn't place a name to a face.

Annabelle grew very quiet when the two arrived at the table, gaze flickering nervously to Kade.

"Yeah, thanks for that, dude," Carter said with a large smile. He smacked one hand down on the table as if declaring something and then leaned in so all his friends could hear. "Alright, team. Let's try to strike up a conversation." With the two girls, that might actually be a challenge.

Kade let out a laugh, already enjoying Carter's company. He judged Annabelle's knee with his own under the table, hoping to convey his comfortability with the situation; perhaps his feelings could flow to her and allow her to relax. He took another bite of his sandwich while eyeing each member of the group. It occurred to him that the blonde girl hadn't produced any sort of lunch, nor did she seem keen to join the quickly growing line of people waiting to buy something to eat.

"You don't eat lunch?" he asked, cocking his head to the side.

Pendley flinched under his gaze, her cheeks heating. "I'm fine," she said quickly, quietly. In all truth, her father refused to allow her to buy lunch at the school because it was too expensive. A bagged lunch was out of the question, especially because the family never had leftovers or snack items in the house. She twiddled her fingers underneath the table, eyes low. She'd become accustomed to not eating; she hadn't even considered that she could be hungry.

Annabelle glanced at Pendley. Being someone who hid her feelings, she could detect when someone else was. "You can have half of mine," She offered quietly. As if to emphasize this, she nudged her lunch bag towards the blonde. She actually wasn't planning on eating at least most of her lunch. Annabelle had a lot of problems, along with starving herself.

Carter kept his eyed fixed on Pendley, worry for her clouding his gaze. He was grateful to the noirette for offering her lunch, and he deeply hoped she'd accept it. She felt a strong urge to protect Pendley.

Pendley glanced up at Annabelle, surprised by her offer. She chewed her lip for a moment before reaching out a small hand and excepting some of the food. Flushed lightly, she chewed slowly, her eyes on the table. She wasn't entirely hungry, but she didn't want to offend the girl; if she ate just a little, perhaps she'd be satisfied.

"So Carter, anything new and interesting in life?" Kade asked after swallowing a bite of sandwich. "I haven't talked to you a lot, but you sure seem in high spirits today."

Annabelle gave a small smile to Pendley. She was glad she could help, or at least, she thought she was helping. There was something really satisfying about it.

"I met a really awesome girl today," He commented idly. "I'm hoping to get closer to her. What about you?"
