Introduction
The human mind is more powerful than many realise it to be, and can create both wondrous achievements and terrible disasters. In Persona, that isnβt just some metaphorical or philosophical statement, but a literal one as well.
Just on the fringes of this world there exist beings known as βShadowsβ, initially shapeless monsters given form through all the emotions and inner darkness that humans try their hardest to keep hidden away in the depths of their mind. Born from despair, envy, anger or nastiness, the Shadows seek to find a way back into our world proper, to return to and destroy the very humans that unknowingly created them.
The existence of the Shadows may be a tightly kept secret to the normal world, but thereβs no doubt they exist. Standard human abilities rarely have any effect against them, but fortunately there does exist a special power able to stand against them.
Called βPersonaβ, this is the ability to manifest a spiritual being created from within your mind, taking the appearance of a well-known figure from history or mythology. With the powers it wields a human can find themselves on equal footing against the Shadows.
The Shadows have struck at least twice before: In 2009 it was at the city of Tatsumi Port Island, where through a hidden hour in the day they began to sap away human consciousnesses while awaiting the end of the world. In 2011 it was in the countryside town of Inaba, where they infested a world on the other side of a TV and preyed on anyone who was thrown inside.
But both these times they were defeated by the combined efforts of Persona-users, whether they were an official group put together by a higher authority or a team of vigilantes who had stumbled onto everything by themselves.
Yet fast-forward to 2015 and once again the Shadows are regrouping and gaining power, this time in a series of parallel dimensions called βPrediction Worldsβ. Prediction Worlds are created by the thoughts and guesses of humans as to what the world of the future will be like, and can range from looking at a smaller and more personal fate to a more serious and global vision.
Prediction Worlds canβt last however, as each one represents a particular idea of the future only a small handful of them have the chance of being the real future. Once it becomes clear that a Prediction World wonβt be the real future, it is erased from existence, but in the meantime they can serve as a spawning ground for new Shadows.
However itβs not only the Shadows that inhabit these parallel Worlds. Humans, or rather possible future humans, live here too, oblivious that they exist only in a fleeting and ill-fated universe.
Seemingly of no relation to any of the above, Mikoto Kobayashi is a shy and nervous 24 year-old currently living with her older brother Haruhiko. It was only a few months ago that they moved up to the mountain town of Yamaeshin, where Haruhiko said he had gotten a job as a journalist, and now finally pressuring Mikoto to get out of the house and move on with her life he has signed her up as a teacher at Tenmei Gakuen, a prestigious Christian high school just to the north of town.
Automatically Mikoto is incredibly reluctant to take this job, but ultimately accepts so as to not disappoint her older brother.
What Mikoto has no way of knowing is that very soon she will be given a power she knows nothing about, that power being Persona. Entrances to the Prediction Worlds may be found all over the world, but a suspicious number of them are beginning to appear around Yamaeshin. Mikoto doesnβt have long until she will up against not only the Shadows, but also those who wish to release the Shadows on to our world and even people that will strive to vanquish the Shadowsβ¦ using any twisted or extremist means possible.
Her hidden idealism may shine through, but will it be a light that leads to salvation or destruction? After all, what man or woman can truly predict the future?
-Yamaeshin-
Yamaeshin is the main town in this game, located near the mountainside in Northern Japan. It is no small rural village, considered a primary hub for many of the surrounding towns, but at the same time it is no urban metropolis either, paling in comparison to places such as Kyoto, Osaka or Sapporo, let alone Tokyo.
Attractions include Tenmei Gakuen, a senior Catholic high school in the north of town, which has already gained a prestigious reputation despite only being around for about twenty-five years (practically nothing compared to many of Japanβs distinguished schools), the Sutamine Observatory on the solitary mountain to the southeast of town and the Sunokaben Gardens located at the townβs approximate centre.
To the north of town the mountains only get higher, while a forested valley lies to the east. To the west lies an expanse of parkland, rivers and wetlands while plains and farming lands dot the south.
Weather is not one of Yameshinβs more positive attributes, both heavy rainfall and snowfall are common throughout the year.
For more information on Yamaeshin please see the location threads, and remember that it will not be the only non-Prediction World location in this game.
-Shadows-
Dark, often nonsensical yet highly dangerous beings created from a humanβs suppressed emotions, such as anger, hatred, fear, insecurity, envy, sorrow, loathing or desire. Though they have never been able to fully enter the normal world, they are a constant threat and seek to achieve nothing less than its destruction.
It is important to understand that Shadows arenβt simply normal monsters. As beings ultimately of the mind, they can only be fought against with the aid of other beings of the mind, I.e. Personae.
-Daemons-
Shadows and (possible) future humans are not the only inhabitants of the Prediction Worlds. Daemons are mysterious creatures based on the myths and legends of humanity. Often they can be violent or destructive, however unlike the Shadows they have personalities of their own and can be reasoned with if you know how to act around them.
If you manage to make a daemon sufficiently happy or interested, it may offer you special items, money or even a tarot card from which contains a new Persona. A frightened daemon however will flee and an angered one will refuse to listen to you and force you to fight. Different conversational skills will work better on different daemons, and characters can combine their Conversation Skills to trigger new responses.
Unlike Shadows Daemons are currently able to appear in the normal world, though as of now their presence isnβt too highly known.
-Personae-
Personae are aspects of oneβs mind that they have learned to manifest and gain control over, whether through the choice of a higher being such as Philemon or through their own mental accomplishments.
Like the aforementioned daemons, they often take the form of beings from mythology or legend, although this is not always the case.
Each Personae is divided into one of the twenty-two Major Arcana in the Tarot, and grants their wielder special abilities that are able to ward off and destroy the Shadows.
Personae can be summoned in a variety of ways, the most common way is βcard-crushingβ, I.e. visualising your Personaβs respective tarot card in your mind and then shredding it apart with your weapon. A more graphic way is through the use of βEvokersβ, which involves using a fake gun to create a shock to drive your Persona out. Evokers are normally only used by those who have not had their Persona bestowed upon them by a higher being.
Yet Personae arenβt always under a personβs complete control. There have been incidents concerning those who werenβt able to fully handle their Personae, resulting in them either trying to destroy their own mind or reverting back into Shadow form.
Please note that when I talk about βmultiple Persona-usersβ, Iβm referring to those who can switch between Personae at will, not those whose Persona eventually evolves.
-Prediction Worlds-
Possessing no official name, the Worlds of Prediction are strange pocket universes that reflect the theories, worries, beliefs, estimations and/or outright random guesses as to what the future of the world is going to be like. They can range from only a year in the future to the very ends of the earth itself, and can also be based on a rather personal scale or a more global vision.
Like Shadows and Personae, Prediction Worlds are divided up into Arcana, although none exist of the Fool or World Arcana, which are instead aligned with the present day and the actual future of the world respectively. Though many Prediction Worlds are said to exist, this game will only focus on one for each Arcana.
There is no single entrance to the Prediction Worlds, instead there are many different doorways scattered all over that lead into them, each taking a different form from gateways to books, mirrors to cupboards, waterfalls to stairways.
The Shadows have turned the Prediction Worlds into their new nesting grounds, feeding off the beliefs and ideas of humanity stored there. Demons are also attracted to theses places to, as they are also based off the human mind and its thoughts as well.
However the Prediction Worlds are also inhabited by human beings as well (well, depending on the world anyway) as naturally future representations of the world will need future representations of the worldβs inhabitants. Humans living in the Prediction Worlds are rarely aware of the true nature of their world or of the Shadows and Daemons that infest it, unless of course their world is based around future knowledge of these beings.
It is also known that anyone native to a Prediction World is unable to leave it back to the present world, and that anyone not native to the Prediction Worlds can only stay there for a limited time before being warped back to the present day.
-Philemon-
A benevolent figure that resides in the Collective Unconsciousness, he has the ability to grant the power to use multiple Personae to those he deems worthy or who need it the most.
Though reportedly a force for good, for the most part he acts only as an observer to events, not intervening at all beyond giving people the ability to use Personae. However, his attendants in the Velvet Room will assist those with access to that place to the fullest of their abilities.
-Nyarlathotep-
Considered the most powerful of all Shadows, Nyarlathotep is a complete representation of all living beingsβ suppressed darkness and torment. He (or she, or it, Nyarlathotep can assume the appearance of practically anything) is Philemonβs dark counterpart, but unlike the neutral observer that Philemon is Nyarlathotep is an active meddler and manipulator, though rarely making a direct appearance. As Nyarlathotep can only see humanity for their sins and failings, he is filled with nothing but disdain for them.
Like Philemon, Nyarlathotep can also grant people Personae, though rarely the ability to have more than one at once. However, much unlike Philemon, Nyarlathotep can also use Personae to gain control over people, even possessing them if he wishes.
-The Velvet Room-
Neither dream nor reality, neither mind nor matter, neither our world nor a Prediction World, the Velvet Room is available to anyone with the ability to switch between multiple Personae at will. The occupants include the "librarian" Rhuo, the "doctor" Mutien, the "guide" Descon and the long-nosed Igor, who assists in Persona Fusion.
-Knights Of Future Past (Protagonist Group)- (Currently a placeholder name till I can think of something better, unless everyone really likes it)
The main protagonists of the game. Not really an official group, but a team formed by Mikoto and some of her students and fellow teachers after finding their way into the Prediction Worlds in-game. Their main goal is to stop the Shadows gaining enough energy to break into the real world, but still trying to protect and defend the Prediction Worlds.
Despite both being Persona-users fighting against the Shadows, this puts them into direct conflict with Luminescence, whose leader believes that destroying the Prediction Worlds is necessary in order to stop the Shadows, if only this once.
Most of the characters in this group will consist of the students and teachers at Tenmei Gakuen, though being from the school is not a requirement in itself. Unless returning P3/P4 characters and/or ex-Luminescence, all characters will have received the ability to use Persona from Philemon, and will likely have had no prior knowledge of Personae, Demons or Shadows.
I will only be accepting nine characters total for this allocation (including Mikoto), though more than that can help out.
-Tenmei Gakuen Student Council (Antagonist Group)- (1 out of 5 spots taken)
The main antagonists (apart from the Shadows) in the beginning of the game, the first Story Arc (though that does not mean they wonβt have any effect later in the game). Their Personae have all been given to them by Nyarlathotep, meaning that while they cannot access the Velvet Room they can gain extra powers from having their Personae βdevourβ the shadows they come across, at the risk of having their personalities warped until Nyarlathotep controls them entirely.
The Student Council Presidentβs goal/consequences of his or her actions is the breaking of the barriers separating the present day from the Worlds of Prediction, allowing the Shadows fully out into the real world. How this will be accomplished and why Iβll leave to his/her player.
Similar to Persona 3, major encounters against the Student Council will occur on specific dates, what dates exactly though may vary depending on the pace of the game.
I will only accept five characters maximum for this group, including the President and those loyal to him/her or not.
-Luminescence (Antagonist Group)-
The main antagonists (apart from the Shadows) in the second Story Arc, that being the main bulk of the game until about the halfway point (the antagonists of the Third and Fourth Story Arcs, besides Nyarlathotep, would be spoilers).
After numerous incidents, including those at both Tatsumi Port Island and Inaba, more and more people have been becoming more aware of the threat of the Shadows. Luminescence is an organisation formed from various people, Persona-users in particular, dedicated to fighting against the Shadows and halting any further attacks from them.
While their aims may be noble, under the command of their leader Etsumi Kamikouei the organisation has taken a rather extremist approach in exterminating Shadows, willing to even blow up the Prediction Worlds to destroy them, Etsumi saying that since their existence is only temporary anyway these Worlds may as well be sacrificed for the sake of the true future.
Etsumi plans to destroy the Prediction Worlds by implanting giant, crystalline objects called βApocalypse Fangsβ within them at their βcoreβ, which will eventually begin to distort the world until after some time finally destroying them. To stop the Apocalypse Fang you must locate it and destroy it before this happens, giving you a time limit like in Persona 4, though remember that it will be guarded by a powerful Daemon bonded to it.
Luminescence is further divided into Agents and Elites. Agents are the normal members of the organisation, specialised in many fields but mostly fieldwork and combat. The Elites are the six highest-ranking members directly under Etsumi herself.
(Both Agents and Elites are playable. While it may sound like Agents would be fodder or βred shirtsβ, itβs actually more likely that the Elites may end up dead since theyβre typically Boss characters)
Remember that, unless in the case of returning P1/P2 characters, it's very likely that Luminescence members will not have received their Persona from Philemon (Etsumi being an exception due to her high status and past).
Not accepting players for the Elites until later on in the game. Thereβs no set number for how many Agents can be in the game, but Iβll generally allow no more than the current number of Knights of Future Past.
-The Tarot / Major Arcana-
Taken from Edogawaβs lecture in Persona 3:
The first card, numbered 0, is The Fool. It represents the beginning and suggests infinite possibilities.
The next card, The Magician, represents action and initiative...but also immaturity.
The Priestess represents contemplation and inner knowledge.
The Empress represents motherhood and the life it brings forth.
The Emperor is an opposing card. It represents fathering and relates to leadership and decision-making skills.
The Hierophant represents formality and knowledge, and stands for religion.
The Lovers represents choice. Here, the individual's consciousness has finally surfaced.
The Chariot represents victory for the individual, but only a momentary one.
Justice represents the knowledge of what is right and what is wrong.
The Hermit represents the individual's search for answers by looking inward, deep inside his heart.
Fortune represents fate, and the opportunities that come with it.
Strength represents both passion and self-control. It is depicted as power with reason.
The Hanged Man reflects the individual's inability to take action.
Spiritual death awaits the individual with the thirteenth card, which is aptly named Death. Death is considered a transitional card: the old ends, and the new begins.
Now let us continue along the path, following the transition.
Temperance is the balancing of opposites. Opening his eyes to the world allows the individual to grow...
...and as The Devil represents, he then faces temptation.
At The Tower, his values collapse on him. It seems as if he no longer has anything to believe in, but...
...he then finds a glimmer of hope, represented by The Star, and he is suffused with a serene calm.
This bliss makes him vulnerable to the illusions of The Moon. Fears arise, and he follows the dim path in his heart with trepidation...
...but he is rewarded with a bright future, represented by The Sun, which signifies true achievement.
Judgement awaits the individual at the end of his journey, as he looks back on the path he has travelled.
The final card is The World, which represents the individual's full awareness of his place in the world.
-Currency-
In-game currency is divided up into Yen (used for interacting with humans) and Macca (used for interacting with demons). Every character regardless of status will start out with 3,000 yen, teachers will be paid 5,000 yen at the end of each week (though this total pay will be lowered for any time off), while students or other characters can earn extra money by performing jobs or quests around town. You can also earn yen by selling items to human shopkeepers.
Aside from buying things obviously, yen is also needed to travel to places other than Yamaeshin in the present day, whether by bus, train or car. Note that travelling, unless for a field trip, will also consume time as well as money.
Macca can be earned by conversing with Daemons or defeating them and Shadows, or by selling objects to demon shopkeepers, though note that demons will assign different values to items than humans.
Also note that a few shopkeepers wonβt accept either, asking for rare gemstones in exchange for objects.
-Elements-
Physical Elements:
- Slash
- Strike
- Spear
- Shot
Magical Elements:
- Fire
- Ice
- Wind
- Lightning
- Earth
- Water
- Almighty (Non-elemental, cannot be weak to or resist)
Status Elements:
- Curse
- Nerve
- Mind
- Expel
- Death
-Calendar-
Time itself should gradually pass in the game, from morning to afternoon or from week to week. As this game centres around a Japanese school remember that the school week also extends to half a day on Saturday. Also take note that travelling to anywhere outside Yamaeshin (that isnβt a Prediction World) will also use up time, and that Apocalypse Fangs must be destroyed (if youβre part of the Knights of Future Past) before a certain time.
-Social Links-
Your relationships with the other characters in the game. As you interact more with those of a certain primary Arcana, your Social Rank for that Arcana will increase. However, if you end up annoying or insulting (whether accidentally or not) a character your Social Rank can decrease.
Please keep in mind though that here Social Links will not increase the power of your Personae, as this would only discourage links with people of Arcana you are incompatible with. Instead, having a higher Social Rank will increase how long you are able to spend in a Prediction World of the matching Arcana, and will open up more areas in that world.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 1 authors

Mikoto Kobayashi would've given anything though to have that night last forever, anything to not have to face this particular day. She had been strolling, or could it be called shuffling, around in her garden since she-didn't-know-what-time, but easily very late in the night, as she had been completely unable to sleep.
Having, let's say, a 5 year-old being moody about having to go to school is one thing. Having a 24 year-old being moody about having to go to school is another. Not that Mikoto was to be a student or anything, a gimmicky comedy film her existence was most definitely not. About a week ago her older brother Haruhiko had signed her up as a teacher over at Tenmei Gakuen, a prestigious High School in the north of town, in order to at least make some improvement to her social skills. Though she had agreed to this, it was only really because she did not want to see her brother disappointed in her anymore, being anything but a people-person Mikoto was incredibly reluctant about the whole thing.
"How long have you been out there?" a tired voice, though not necessarily from lack of sleep, said to her from over by the back doorstep.
Mikoto slowly turned around, and quite bluntly answered "I don't know. For hours". Usually she was a lot more polite and open with her brother, he was the only person she was ever open to really, but this time her voice only sounded cold and harsh.
Haruhiko at the door did not reply, but his facial expression said just about everything. "...You know, since you're going anyway, sleep-deprivedness is not going to make a good first impression for your students" he finally said, giving Mikoto a rather unpleasant reminder of the upcoming day.
Mikoto in return made no reply, she just folded her arms and turned to look away from him. Haruhiko just sighed and began to walk back inside , but said one last to thing to her from over his shoulder.
"Could you at least be back in by 8 o'clock, okay?" he called out, halfway expecting her to place her hands over her ears to block him out. Mikoto however just hesitated and looked downwards.
The thing about being up since the middle of the night is that you at least have a head start when it comes to getting there on time.
The morning having progressed further now, shaping up to be a sunny day with the occasional cloud cover, Mikoto walked her bike, a not-to-sleek and slightly old-fashioned thing with a basket at the front, out on to the street pavement and carefully got up on it. Haruhiko had told her he would be coming along with her to the school to at least see her settled down for the day, however not having the problems with public transport that she did he'd be taking the regular bus.
The morning wind felt cold on the back off Mikoto's neck, but she quickly shook herself to through the chill off and started pedalling along. She'd have to head northwest to get to Tenmei Gakuen, past the Sunokaben Gardens, across the train-tracks and even slightly uphill, and to be honest she didn't feel like she had the energy, or even the desire, to achieve half of that distance.
Oh, but she finally got there, even if she was forced to walk her bicycle uphill when her leg muscles got too tired of all that pedalling. Panting for breath, she was about as sleepy as Haruhiko said she'd be, Mikoto tried to shake herself awake and turned around to look at Tenmei Gakuen, the place she'd be teaching at for about a year.
She didn't like the look of the place much when she had first been here for that signing-up business, and her thoughts had hardly changed since. The white colour to the walls made it look all sterile to her, and the place had so many buildings she was certain she'd get lost. I guess the place does look 'prestigious', she thought to herself, though all the more uninviting because of it.
Just then she saw Haruhiko coming up wandering to her. "Got here first", he muttered, mockingly taking the tone of someone more immature, "by about eight minutes, I'd say".
As Mikoto again chose not to reply, Haruhiko then said "The opening ceremony starts in a matter of time. Look, if you're embarassed about me being here or anything, I can just enter the hall from round the back while you find somewhere to sit".
"...I'm not embarassed" Mikoto softly replied "It's just - it's just - that I don't..." she began, but it was obvious she was having difficult finding the words.
"Look, things are going to be alright" Haruhiko tried to reassure her, but as that seemed to have no effect he just said, with a mild bitter tone, "Please, don't make a fool of yourself".
'Fool eh? No, that attribute doesn't look quite right for you, not now anyway. I'd say you're more of a...' a voice coming from... what looked like nowhere suddenly said, though for some reason Mikoto did notice a strange, purple-coloured(?) bat flying quickly overhead before disappearing.
A bit unnerved, though trying to shake the memory of the voice out of her mind, Mikoto took one last look back at Haruhiko before going inside the School Hall to find a place amongst the teachers' seats.
