As the older gentleman pushed the door to the odd book shop open, a bell rang over the door, alerting the owner to their arrival. At least it would have, were he not asleep in a plush looking leather chair behind his desk. He looked fairly young to be the owner of a bookstore, but he was the only one here. Besides the cat anyway, who sat up, stretched lazily, and chirped at the three people in the door way. They were obviously to big to be citizens of "My Town", so they must have been here for books or whatever it is people bought here. The small cat stared at them for a few seconds with huge, glittering eyes before prancing over to a silver bell sitting on the desk. Apparently this was a regular thing, because the cat tapped the bell once with a paw, saw that it hadn't woken Alan up, and began slamming the bell repeatedly, filling the shop with the sharp metallic sound.

Startled, the young man quickly sat up and placed his hand on the bell to stop the noise, rubbing an eye with the other hand while he stared at the small cat. The cat merely stared back, chirped again, and sauntered off to a small town made of legos sitting on the far end of the desk. Alan sighed and shook his head.

"Sometimes, I swear that cat is smarter than it should be." He coughed a little and turned to the tree people standing in the door. "Well don't just stand there letting the rain in, come in, come in!" urged the blonde haired boy. "Now, what is it I can do for you? We just got a shipment in of..." He frowned and picked up the book displayed on the desk in its own little stand, complete with corny advertising. "The Fault In Our Stars... A real heart wrencher this one!"

Chandra blinked a few times, and noticed when another girl came in behind her. She was a little to shy at the moment to say hello, but she nodded and smiled at the girl. That's when she and her father both noticed the young man asleep on the couch behind the counter. Her father cleared his throat a couple of times trying to get the patrons attention but he was really in a deep sleep. That's when a cat hopped up looking at them with big green eyes. It was a sweet looking cat, Chandra was about to reach out and pet it when headed to a bell on the counter. The cat began to ring it.

"Why I've never seen anything like it." Chandra and her father stood there stunned as the young man began to wake from his slumber.

"Sometimes, I swear that cat is smarter than it should be."

He mumbled just before he noticed that there was a group of people in his store standing on the other side of the counter. Chandra couldn't help but giggle a little, only to stop when her father gave her the look that said she was doing something rude.

The young man cleared his throat and came around the counter.

"Well don't just stand there letting the rain in, come in, come in."
"Now, what is it I can do for you? We just got a shipment in of..."
"The Fault In Our Stars... A real heart wrencher this one!"

"I'm sorry young man but my daughter and I didn't come here for books. Now I can't speak for the other young woman, but my daughter received and odd letter you see that told her to come here." Chandra's father looked over at the other girl that had come in behind them, then leaned over and whispered to the young man. "It talks about magic and the like."

Chandra looked at the young man and blushed the looked down at the floor embarrassed at the way her father was dealing with this. It was like he was trying to make some sort of business deal, but she understood in her father's mind there was no possibility of magic being real. Now for a while Chandra might have thought the same thing. But being in the store she could feel something about it, that made her think... that maybe, just maybe there could be such a thing as magic.

Hugh shut the front door as he walked into the house, mail in hand. He began flipping through the various letters, tossing the more obvious junk mail to its ultimate demise of being recycled. Advertisements, scams, pyramid schemes, one letter from his mother's ex-boyfriend.

He was just about to throw a more bizarre looking piece of mail out before realizing that it appeared just a bit different than the others. Slightly yellowed, no trace of gloss, sealed with wax, and addressed to- Hugh? Hugh never got mail. The last time he had gotten important mail was in fifth grade when he had been invited to Jamie Albett's birthday party.

Despite the less than favorable vibes he was getting from the letter, Hugh grabbed a letter opener, tore it open, and unfolded the letter. As he read it over, though, his expression slowly became an incredulous half-smile. Someone really expected him, or anyone for that matter, to fall for this?

Well, at least he knew someone was playing him for a fool. He was tempted to crumple it and toss it into the waste bin on the spot. Then again, the letter was not exactly asking for him to send money to a foreign bank account or even go out of country. In fact, he recognized the name of the shop he was being directed to. Fairy Tales, that little local bookstore that he had passed every now and again when he had gone out into town more often. Even if the letter did turn out to be nonsense, he might just find that biography on Fritz Haber while he was there.

"Hey, mom, I'm gonna head out for a while!" Hugh called to the kitchen.

A brief moment of what must have been confused silence before she yelled back, "We need milk, bring some back!"

"I will!" Hugh assured her before leaving the remaining mail on its appropriate pile, and opening the door. Milk, milk, milk, he repeated in his head. He liked his coffee with milk so to forget would be as detrimental to him as it would be to the rest of the household.

***

As he strode into the shop, Hugh was hit with the distinct scent that came with most old interiors. The smell of pages and musk and dust. It reminded him of the natural history museum that he used to love visiting when he was younger. He would not have been surprised if he looked around and saw a taxidermied

Beyond the smell, there already seemed to be a few others talking with the shopkeeper. He could swear that he heard the word "letter" a few times. So he was not the only one.

"I really hope I'm not the only one who thought that letter was suspicious." Hugh said, loud enough to be heard. "Because I'd be very disappointed if everyone who got this letter about magic and wizards other nonsense showed up."

#, as written by Ricci
The morning was off already, her mother was biting her lips containing a smile that made her want to send her to a psychologist. At least her sister seemed to sport the same puzzled look on her face, what a relief. The cold of the wooden floor on her bare feet sent shivers up her spine as she slowly made her way to the breakfast table. Quietly slipping into her seat, her fingers wound around the little pink coffee mug, that when she saw the thing. A letter, its impeccable surface to clean to have been sent by that post office. She had seen them, they weren't exactly delicate with the packages. It was addressed to her, the was no mistaking the green printed letters on that piece of paper. But this wasn't anything she had dreamed of; she wanted an entrance to Harvard or something, not this junk.

The letter seemed to keep on spilling strange rubbish, like if this was some sort of joke. Yes it was all a joke, her gaze moved on to the trash can, not to far from the table. Then her mom came spewing more nonsense, "Oh we are so happy! I remember when I received my letter, I was just as exited as you are."

"I'm not exited! This is a joke, why would you do this." Sarah stood from the chair, with such speed it made her feel a little nauseous.

"No it's not, I can't believe you don't understand. With everybody saying is she ready all the..."

"Wait, that's it! I thought I had a disease and it's a stupid letter saying I'm a wizard!" It seemed a storm of rage followed her a she went upstairs.

"Get dressed honey, we shall leave for the bookstore." Her mother's call were drowned by the slam of the door.

Now no escape, at her left flank was a smiling mother readily driving with this smile that anyone could confuse for drunk. At the right was a door that if she opened at jumped it would be an untimely end. All these thoughts made her sink into her jacket, like a pile of oozing black tar. Lips moved, but no words came or no words were heard. It was all a blur, she was relief she wasn't diseased, mad because they had always kept her doubting, and confused because she was supposedly a wizard.

The crowd, oh she didn't like crowds, today was starting to tank the worst days ever. Her mother pushed her slowly forward but she couldn't speak, hopefully in her happy stupor she would get impatient and let her leave. "Hello." It was finally pushed out of her as she was pushed even more towards the crowd. Now she should be a wizard so she can disappear.

Alan could only blink and stare at the mob of would be wizards gathering in his doorway. Even Salem seemed shocked, staring at the group with wide eyes as he climbed a scale lego replica of Big Ben. "By all the... they promised to keep you guys somewhat separate..." Alan sighed heavily and stood up, waving his hand. The letters they held vanished momentarily, only to reappear on the desk. He pulled his chair up behind him and sat back down, pulling a drawer open as he explained.

"Yes, magic exists, and yes, all of you, save the elder gentleman here, are wizards. You always have been, it just took us some time to find you." A stamp floated up from the drawer, followed by an ink pad. The stamp dipped itself in the ink and came down on a letter, leaving an ink seal of crossed wands under an owl. Alan pulled the letter away, and put another one it its place, so the stamp could repeat the task.

"Each one of you has earned yourself free admittance to The Unseen University." He smiled up at them as Salem sauntered over to the letters, a small lego citizen dangling from his mighty jaws by a leg. "What, were you expecting Hogwarts? Sorry, but that's just a story, though the series is on sale if you're interested!" He pulled the letters into a pile and pushed them under his desk. There was a sound much like a *gulp*, and then a belch. "Of course, you'll have to finish high school before you can attend, it is a university after all." He scratched behind the ears of his cat and smiled as he began to purr.

"I'm Alan, Alan Kalle. I will be your... advisory is the word they've started to use. I'm here to answer any questions you WILL have." He smiled and pulled a few lego airplanes from the drawer and tapped them. Their little motors whirred into life and they took off for the lego city. Salem went bug-eyed and ran across the desk after them, scaling Big Ben in true monster movie fashion.

"So then, any questions?"

Hugh's face scrunched up in discontent, processing what had just been said and now done. The letters had disappeared and reappeared. Converted to energy and moved to another location, certainly. No device could do that on any scale yet. A beam crossed his face briefly, and he was about to practically squeal asking the shop keeper how he pulled such a feat off. Before he could, though, his more rational mind kicked in, holding him back from embarrassment. Doubt, he reminded himself, doubt was always key.

So, according to this book shop owner, magic existed, and he was a wizard. The bastard inside Hugh wanted to laugh at the idea. These were the words of madmen coming out of this boy's mouth. The skeptic inside of Hugh, on the other hand, simply was not buying the idea. Any observable miracles, voodoo, witchcraft, magic, or the like had been staunchly disproved by simple natural phenomena running its course or human psychology running wild. What is magic anyway? Hugh wondered. A simple question any decent scientist would ask, he realized.

"One primary question, Alan, on top of several others." Hugh started, vocally exasperated. As he spoke his eyes occasionally drifted to the cat playing with Legos in a very un-cat-like manner. Hugh was no animal behaviorist, but he was fairly sure that most cats would not react to artificial toys in such a manner. Maybe the cat had been trained to behave as it was.

"Would you mind defining "magic" for those of us who are unfamiliar? It's not a word that means, well, anything solid in my mind, outside of parlor tricks and such. If you're trying to tell us what I believe you mean, my guess is that there would be a variety of laws and theories surrounding "magic" as there is in the cases of almost all known natural forces." Hugh asked the question in earnest, though, a condescending ring to his tone shined through. While he was open to new possibilities, magic seemed, in his mind, highly suspect. He cleared his throat before speaking again, "Put simply, what is magic exactly?"

He looked over to the inquiring boy, according to the letter his name was Hugh Jackman. He leaned back in his chair and entwined his fingers. "Well yes, there are hundreds of theories and thousands of laws surrounding the workings of magic. Hmmm..." He tilted his head, trying to think of a definition that they would understand without any previous knowledge of magic. Finally, he came to a decision. "Magic is, in layman's terms, the manipulation of energy, generated by our realm traveling through the Realm Stream." He picked up two pencils and held them before the group. "When two things bump or rub against each other," he explained as the bumped the two pencils together, "They generate force. The same is true of our realm. When our world bumps against another, it generates its own force. Magic."

He put the pencils down and smiled. "So I guess you can think of Magic as the energy produced by "world friction". Wizards are simply the people in this world capable of harnessing said energy. Does that make sense to you?"

Hugh was at once horrified and fascinated. On one hand, his entire perception of the world was slowly being picked apart. On the other, magic, a method of effortlessly manipulating the world around him, was a reality, and he was a wizard himself. Worse still, his number of questions was growing exponentially as the boy spoke. What were the foundational laws of magic? What were these realms and the Realm Stream? Why were wizards the only people capable of harnessing magic? Why did everyone not know about magic? And all these questions assuming that what this shop keeper said was, indeed, factual. Were he less used to multifaceted thinking, his head might have hurt.

"Not quite." Hugh admitted "Quite frankly, all of that still seems all but ludicrous to me. After all, something so groundbreaking like actual magic couldn't possible have stayed in secret for so long. Why would-?" He cut off as he turned to look at the excited girl crying out about her letter from behind him. He tried not to roll his eyes at the exclamation.

Carrie had found the shop after despite a few distractions along the way but was put off by the number of people in the shop ".....These must be some popular drugs...". She considered simply dropping this and walking away as she was prone to doing but was strangely compelled to see this through. She reluctantly entered the shop and examined it's interior. "1,2,3,4....6........Cat!". Completely distracted Carrie walked over to the replica city and held her hand out to the feline "....Cat". She had not realized the disappearance of her letter and only caught peaces of what the shopkeeper was saying but did catch the part about her being a wizard "A wizard?....Neat" and casually returned her attention to the small black feline "...Cat". While she appeared to have lost interest she was wondering what the implications for going to such a place would be for a dropout like her. While she had doubts about this whole wizard thing she was simply too bored not to go with it. At least until she knew enough about it to lose interest. When the shopkeeper offered to answer questions she half raised her hand and stood perfectly still as she waited for a response ".........".

"Zzzz... ZZ- AGH!" His head hit the desk as the books were knocked aside and he sat back up, rubbing his eyes. Salem hissed at the man as he walked by and swatted at him from his perch atop "Little Ben". He fixed his hair and put the books back into a pile. "I would ask you got here Jakob, but the question is rather redundant with you." He sighed and pulled out another drawer full of books, all bound in deep red leather and covered in strange glyphs. He snapped his fingers and they simply appeared in the hands of the young wizards crowding the entrance of his book shop. "Yes, you need to finish your normal schooling here in Sherfield before we can send you to the University. If we simply pulled you out and sent you off, we'd arouse a good deal of suspicion." He picked up a copy of the red leather book and held it up.

"Pay attention people, cause this book is your new best friend. This is A Guide to the Arcane. Anything and everything you need to know to control your magic is within this book, as well as contact information for every Wizard and advisory in our region."
He put the book down as Salem leaped down from his tower of legos and into his lap. He smiled and stroked the cat affectionately. "Now then, with all that settled, please get out of my store. Now." He snapped his fingers and willed his magic into being, gripping the young wizards and pushing them out the door and into the the rain, which seemed to be clearing up.

Alan turned in his chair to the Time Wizard Jakob Rothchild, Salem's hair standing on end at the mans presence. Cats were not fond of time magic, they seemed to have some sort of affinity for disturbances in time. That and Salem didn't seem to like Jakob. "Now then Jake, what can I do for you? Another book on time theory? Some more 20 sided dice perhaps?" he frowned and rested his hand on the cat. "Or did you goof again?"

Hugh blinked and looked around. He was outside in the rain again suddenly, slightly nauseous, with a book in his hands, and flanked by the other teens. Had that shopkeeper booted them out? It had happened so fast and his mind had been occupied on the thousand questions spinning around his mind. Alan must have used magic to force them out his store. If that was the case, though, and other lifeforms could be gripped with magic, what else could one do to a person? Hugh decided to shelve that particular question for the time being. Macabre possibilities did not need to be scrutinized too soon.

"What the hell?" he said, a little too loudly. It was the only exclamation he could think of that perfectly fit the situation. Within no more than a half an hour, he and the other teens had been hit with far too much information in far too little words. He still had questions and he would not be surprised if the others did as well. Glancing down at the book, he realized that Alan likely expected their questions to be answered by its pages. Still, that was no excuse to kick them out into the rain, questions heavy on their tongues and shock weighing down their minds.

"Someone please tell me that I'm not the only one who's completely flabbergasted by all this." he invited to none of the others in particular. Hugh shook his head, trying to clear away the muddled thoughts.

Xavier was at his computer once again. He was browsing through the internet. Nothing had caught on to be interesting right now. It was as boring as watching local news. Soon, through his headphones, he would hear knocks. He looked over at the digital clock in the corner of the screen; it wasn’t time to take his medicaments. Then what would it be? He turned around and walked up to the door. There was then a letter that slipped under his door. Which parents it was, it seems that they were interested in the letter. He tilted his head; who would send him a letter anyways? He was actually surprised that there was a use in hand-written letters. He slowly picked up the envelope and walked back towards his computer. With the light on his desk, he would shine light upon the envelope. The letter was sealed with wax, and with a symbol which he doesn’t know of the origin. He wondered, but he would then open the envelope, starting to read…

Sir Xavier Teratus,
You have been accepted…

Xavier frowned a bit at the letter. First of all, they didn’t even have his family name right. Teratus? It was like the name that we would give to a monster or something. Then the rest was just… unbelievable. Him? A wizard? What kind of trickery this was? He would then look further in the letter. Ah, now it might explains it; the Fairy Tales bookstore. He had been there a couple of times trying to find a gift for either his mother or father, but he never saw something that would interest them. Now it seems logical; it was just publicity. He set the letter aside into the bin, going back on the vast internet trying to forget about this trash.

After a few minutes, he would hear some knocks on his door against his door. He would look over as he found his mother entering into his room.

“Hey, my boy,” she said with her so delicate voice as she approached. Her smile would make every spirit calm, if that would be possible. Xavier looked back at his monitor, blankly staring at it as he leaned on his hand.

“Hey, mom,” he responded.

“So, did you open it yet?” She asked. Xavier pointed at the bin which she promptly glanced at. She let out a small sigh. “Well, what was it about?”

“Oh, some propaganda for this store called ‘Fairy Tales’. They even got my family name wrong,” he answered, unfazed by the problem. He would then feel his mom’s arm wrapped around him, holding him into a hug. She smiled down at him.

“Well, maybe you should look what it was about. Besides, I need you to make some errand. I’m missing a few ingredients for dinner and I’m helping your father with something.” She looked outside of the window which was always half-closed. “I know it is not especially, so I let you have the umbrella.”

Xavier let out a sigh. “Why don’t you go make the errands? I can help dad.” She shook her head.

“No. I think you should get outside sometimes. I mean, aren’t you bored of that internet of yours?” Xavier looked over his monitor. Yes, it was quite boring, and his only friend was still sleeping. He sighed and stood up.

“Fine.” He only said.

“Oh, by the way, you should go check for your pills. They should have arrived as well.” She added as they exited the room. Xavier quickly took the letter back into its enveloped so he doesn’t forget about it.

“Am I not supposed to be with you or dad for those kind of things?” He asked, tilted his head slightly to the side.

She giggled a bit. “You’re 17 now. You are, and legally, in the rights to get those.” Xavier would look at her for a moment, then nodded.

“If you say so. After all, you know more about the laws here than I do.” He replied as they were in front of the main door. He was given everything he needed to make the trip over there. They lived a bit away from the stores, but fortunately the buses were still operating in this weather. Once Xavier was done preparing, which didn’t really took that long, he walked outside with the umbrella protecting him.

His mother smiled, slowly closing the door behind him.

…Damn this, damn this fragmented life
How long have we spent on wasting time?
For centuries, our lives have been damned
Forever meant to suffer in this Neverland

My brain will short out, Kaiba-sensei
while staring at these hands that have been scraped
I know I can make it alright
Just press this button to reset our lives…

Xavier never thought how much awkward he was in the real world. With his disease, he could really do much but wonder what was real and what was false. His mind often break into fantasy and horrific visions. While other people could only see the boy stand calmly, his eyes was seeing something else. He could see beings that aren’t supposed there or seemed to be out of place, and he sometimes felt like he was falling in a hole. Even more, which the medication, moving around was a bit of a pain. Only, it didn’t matter now because he didn’t take them since he received his new ones today.

On his way to the bookstore, he could swear that the singer of the music he listened too was walking with him. When he passed in front of the shop, he would see that there was other people. Soon, his music came to a stop as he could swear that he felt breathing over his right ear. There was also a whisper.

“Go with them…” He heard in a deep, growl-ish voice. Usually, when he heard these sort of things, bad stuff happened. Not because he obeyed, but he often stood there in danger. Xavier shook his head. No, this time, he won’t play the dog. He took the letter and threw it away. He also took out his medication and quickly took a pill down. Soon, there was relief. The voice that tried to order him to get back the letter drowned into silence. He put back the music on, trying to forget about it as he walked back to his house instead of taking the bus. He tried to make it longer so his mother thinks that he really went to it. Besides, it seemed to get clearer.

… Can you see all of me?
Walk into my mystery
Step inside and hold on for dear life

Do you remember me?
Capture you or set you free
I am all, I am all of me
(I am, I am all of me!)…

Xavier finally got back to his house. The first thing he noticed was that his parents were talking loudly. It was a very rare thing, but it is usually good to ignore what they are saying. He set the bags on the counter and walked up the stairs into his room. The last thing he heard from his dad was:

“Teratus…. Teratus! How they even thought that he would be one of them!? It is ridiculous!”

It was an interesting question which Xavier didn’t have the answer. He was glad a bit that his father was on the same side as him. He set back into his chair and went back on his computer. His friend was still not there…
