Georgie can, at first, come across as somewhat intimidating. Pretty much always dressed in black, multiple piercings in each ears, and, depending on what she’s wearing, sometimes multiple tattoos on show. She swings between having two notches shaved into her eyebrow and letting them grow in full, depending on her mood and impulsivity at any given time. She’s got a bad case of resting bitch face too, making her look scarier than she is. But the minute she engages in conversation, her whole demeanor seems to change. Her smile lights up her entire face, and there’s pretty much always a twinkle in her eye. Her personality also shines through in fun and cute graphic t-shirts and her tattoos. If she has to go into the office for anything, she sticks to button down shirts and slacks with a blazer, but day too day she tends to wear more punk and rocker influenced outfits, usually with ripped jeans and combat boots. All of her tattoos are in places that are both easy to cover up and easy to show off, depending on her outfit. She has a phases of the moon tattoo on her spine, some cute space symbols on her ankle, a panda on the outside of her right wrist, arrows on the outside of her left forearm, and a rainbow bar just below her right elbow. She’s got her fair share of scars, both from her childhood and teenage stupidity.

P E R S O N A L I T Y:
Georgie is the type of person that seems to have unlimited reserves of energy. She works full-time as a social media manager and content creator for an up-and-coming company based in the city, while also managing her own blog and YouTube channel and occasionally making her own short films. She’s that person who’s almost annoyingly chirpy in the mornings, no matter how little sleep she’s had. Even after a long day, she’s still down for going for a few drinks or out clubbing. No matter how busy she is, if a friend asks a favour of her, she’ll always do it, and she’ll always do it well and perfectly on time. Nobody’s quite sure how she manages it, but she does.

Given that her whole brand is “your gay mom”, it’s no surprising that she’s fiercely protective of everyone she cares about. She’s been known to step in and fight their battles for them because she can’t bear to see her friends struggling and getting hurt. She tries not to interfere as much as possible, but sometimes does so unintentionally in order to protect her friends. Seeing people getting hurt because they dared to simply be themselves breaks her heart especially, and she’s been known to step in to protect complete strangers. In these situations, she has a tendency of getting in over her head, letting her mouth get the better of her, and talking with her fists, but she usually comes out alright.

Truth be told, a lot of her persona is an act. Her dating life has been a disaster from the start and shows no signs of getting any better. She’s across the country from her family and usually only sees them once or twice a year. She’s desperately lonely, even if she won’t admit it, and her busy lifestyle is just intended to distract her. For the most part, she genuinely is just that energetic and enthusiastic, but she’s also been known to use prescription drugs to give her a boost when she needs it. It’s a habit she’s trying to kick, but there are days when resisting it just takes too much energy.

Georgie never knew her birth parents. They were killed in a car accident days after she was born, and she was put into care. She was in care until she was six, when she was adopted by a gay couple. They had already adopted three kids and were emergency foster careers, so Georgie grew up in a chaotic, but loving, household. Her parents made sure to tell each and every one of them how much they were loved on a regular basis, and supported them in everything they did. They didn’t care who their kids were or who they loved, which meant Georgie never felt the need to come out to her parents.

She was sixteen when she first discovered the world of blogging. A few of her friends already had blogs so she mostly started hers to see what the fuss was about. But her witty, charming commentary on her household and her life quickly became popular, and she showed a huge affinity for social media and content creation. Her parents bought her a good camera and a lighting set up for her eighteenth birthday, and she began her YouTube channel. When it came to going to college, she knew that her grades were good enough to get her into most colleges. But she wasn’t ready to move away just yet, and chose to live at home and attend her local community college to major in media studies with a minor in film and screen studies, while balancing her blog on the side.

Immediately after graduating, Georgie was offered a job in New York. A tech start-up was looking for someone to run their social media and make occasional content, and one of the founders had been following Georgie and her online presence for a few years. He reached out to her and offered her the job. It required moving across the country- but it was her dream job and the money was good. At first, she lived in a tiny studio apartment, barely big enough for her and all her equipment. But when the company got a big contract, it came with a pay rise for Georgie, and she moved into a nicer apartment. She wasn’t sure what to expect when she placed the advertisement for a roommate, but Viv was better than anything she could have imagined. They clicked right away and became friends. Georgie’s ignoring the feelings that the other girl evokes in her. She doesn’t want to ruin things between them, and anyway, Viv has a boyfriend.

So begins...

It was always dark when Vivian left for her dance practice in the mornings. She tried not to be too loud, leaving Ray snoring in her bed as she tip-toed over to her en-suite. Dousing herself in a cold shower was the only way Viv could wake up this early every day, even though she felt like she was freezing to death every morning. She still wasn’t used to the New York weather after a couple of years in the big city, thanks to a life in the Mississippi heat. She always trusted the hot coffee that would be in her hand in a few minutes to heat her up, as well as comfy layers so she could walk over to the dance company.

After shivering her way into her leotard, a pair of sweatpants, and a baggy sweatshirt, she silently moved from her room into the communal space for her and Georgie. The opportunity to move into a nice two bedroom apartment for such a good price was something Viv wasn’t able to resist, even if it meant she and Ray weren’t living together anymore. He still managed to sleep over most nights like he did last night, but most days she saw him when she was working at the restaurant and it was usually just her and Georgie at the apartment. Being alone with her roommate was nerve wracking at first, considering Georgie was one of the most beautiful women she ever met. But, they clicked instantly and Viv enjoys it more when it’s just the two of them rather than having Ray around, which was definitely something she needed to figure out but had pushed away for the time being.

Once her coffee was brewed and ready to go in her travel mug, she left a note telling Georgie and Ray when it was brewed and wishing them both a good day. She’d be wrapped up in warm ups and practice for long enough that it’d be well into the day before she could make it back home. Today was different than most days because she and Georgie had decided to throw a party tonight. Viv’s team had just done really well at a competition and they’d decided to celebrate. Of course, their dance instructor would be unaware of the full details, as they weren’t supposed to drink during competition season, but Viv and her team liked to have as much fun as possible.

Dance practice was a blur, and it was obvious that the party later was on her mind. Though when her instructor asked what had her all distracted, she blamed in on a poor night's rest rather than the upcoming party. She would rather be lectured for having a fictitious poor sleep schedule than being a bad influence on the rest of her team. In reality, it was her teammate Jessica's idea to have a party, considering most of them placed first in their divisions, but Viv's apartment was the only place that would really allow for a party fit for dancers and their friends.

She made sure that Georgie was cool with it, and told her that she could invite anyone she wanted to celebrate with them. Ray invited all the restaurant staff without asking, which wasn't surprising to Viv; Ray had always been the type to act without asking, or thinking, ever since they met in high school. It was one of the biggest things they fought over. She wasn't going to let him ruin the party for her, especially when he was already trying to make her feel guilty for not spending time with him while she was focused on the past competition. It was like dating a child, but he was the only thing she had from home. And they had their good moments, there was a reason they started dating in the first place. Reasons that seemed insufficient now that she'd met Georgie.

She shook the thought from her head as quickly as she had thought it. It was becoming more frequent, the thoughts of her roommate. As she walked home from the company to take lunch, she hoped that Georgie was working from home today so they could chat before the party. She knew Ray was already at the restaurant, as he had to deal with the brunch-goers wanting bottomless mimosas, so it would just be the two of them. Viv went inside of their apartment, shrugging off her coat and beanie and started walking over to the kitchen. "Hey Georgie, you here?" Viv called out, noticing her roommate's door ajar but unable to find the blonde.

The joy of working from home most days was that, theoretically, Georgie could sleep in. But she usually had so much to do that she didn't indulge in that luxury, and that morning was no better. In theory, she was supposed to be working from home that day, but she was needed for a meeting and had to film in the office at some point this week. It was easier to go in today, get everything done, and hopefully be home by lunchtime instead of dragging it out over a few days.

She dragged herself out of bed and showered, taking the few blissful minutes in the shower to properly wake up. Getting properly dressed up for the day still felt odd, she usually preferred to spend the morning in a t-shirt and leggings and film in the afternoons and evenings once she felt properly awake. She was fully intending on making herself a proper breakfast- but on seeing who was already sitting on the couch, she decided against it. As far as she was concerned, Ray was an asshole. She'd tried to be nice and pleasant with him from the start, but something about him just didn't sit right with her. She also got the impression that the feeling was entirely mutual.

"Morning," she said flatly as she walked across the apartment. He just nodded in return, his attention entirely on his phone and his coffee. He wasn't planning on leaving any time soon, then. He had, at least, left enough coffee for her. She emptied the pot into her travel mug, stirred in a few spoons of sugar, and tipped in some milk, before heading straight out of the apartment.

She really didn't understand what Viv saw in Ray. She'd found herself pondering that more and more lately. She told herself that it was just Ray's behaviour lately. She hadn't dared say anything, but the fact he'd invited people without clearing it with her or Viv just seemed like the final straw. But they had the space so they didn't really have any reason to object.

The meeting and filming session went well, even if they overran a little bit, and Georgie was satisfied as she headed back to the apartment. She was only back in the door a few minutes herself when she heard someone calling out. Viv was back. She grinned and pulled off her coat, sitting on the bed to kick off her shoes. "In here!" She called back. "How were rehearsals?"

Georgie grinned almost instinctively at the energy in Viv's voice, her smile widening as Viv mentioned the party. She really was looking forward to it and couldn't wait to let off some steam. She rolled up her sleeves as she followed Viv out to the kitchen at the mention of food. "No, I'm just back in the door myself. Meetings and a shoot and all that jazz," she said. "So lunch sounds really good." She always loved the hour or so when they both took lunch, when it was just the two of them in the apartment. Being around Viv when it was just the two was like an instant source of stress relief.

"It was good. Meeting was positive, just monthly check-ins and all that. And we got some good footage for the promo videos, so editing it and putting it together shouldn't be too bad." She said, climbing to sit on the counter a short distance away from Viv. "Should be able to finish up early this afternoon to get everything set up for the party," she said, grinning widely. "I can't wait. It's been way too long since I've been at a good party and even longer since I threw one." She had only thrown one or two when she was living back at home, and they were with her dads' permission and were pretty small.

She raised an eyebrow at the constant buzzing from Viv's phone and the way she only glanced at it. "If you need to check any of them, I can take over the veg," she said, nodding at the phone. From where she was sitting, she could see Ray's name on quite a few of the messages. "It looks like it could be important." There were times that she had to remind herself that Ray was, in fact, still Viv's boyfriend and not just an annoying mutual friend, and so had to bit her tongue to stop her from saying anything harsh.

Viv was glad to see Georgie join her in the kitchen. It was one of the few times that they had alone time, between Ray being over and their hectic work schedules. Lunch hour had become their time to get to know each other, and it had become a cherished time in Viv’s day where she could relax and just enjoy Georgie’s presence. She was an almost addictive person to be around, and Viv was reminded every day how lucky she was to find a roommate like this in New York City. She made sure to add extra ingredients to her board so that there would be enough for the both of them. Viv was happy to listen along to Georgie's day as she cut up the vegetables, grinning wider as Georgie mentioned how excited she was for the party. "I think it'll be a killer party. And I can't wait to meet all your cool tech industry friends," Viv adds the last part as a tease, though she found Georgie's job to be extremely interesting.

Viv sighed as Georgie mentions her phone; she was hoping to finish lunch before checking in, but Georgie mentioned it could be important. She let Georgie take over and grabbed her phone, immediately dialing Ray. "You know this is my lunch hour, what's up?" Viv stepped into her room, hoping to keep the conversation quick but ready to isolate herself if they started an argument. Ray blew up her phone quite frequently and somehow it was always her fault that she didn't answer, even though she had perfectly good reasons to not answer him whether it was her lunch break or dance lessons. The conversation dissolved into Viv having to come up to the restaurant to help Ray get everything for the party. On one hand, she didn't want to go up to the restaurant when she already had to see her coworkers later. But, she knew they were offering booze and food for free, so she felt obligated to come help, especially with Ray guilting her.

Viv sighed and started grabbing her coat and beanie. "Hey I'm sorry Georgie, I gotta go down to the restaurant. They need some help with the food and drink for tonight," Viv felt bad for leaving Georgie to make lunch by herself when she was the one that was originally cooking. "Do you have any special requests? I can make it up to you by making sure we have plenty of whatever you want tonight!" Viv offers in what she hopes is a consolation prize for leaving her during their lunch hour. She knew Georgie still had some work to do so it wouldn't be until they were setting up for the party for her to see Georgie again, but thankfully with the restaurant coworkers coming, they would distract Ray enough that she could have some proper time with her roommate.

Georgie laughed at the reference to her "cool tech industry" friends. Her friends were pretty cool for the most part, but she wasn't sure they were as slick and as polished as that term would cause one to imagine. But they were nice, and good fun, so she was sure that they and Viv would get along well. She hoped they would anyway. It was always a little nerve wracking having friends meeting for the first time.

She took over chopping the veg as Viv stepped away to call Ray. She knew that things count devolve into an argument pretty fast, and she resolved not to ask too many questions whenever Viv came back. She'd overheard the arguments before, even though she always tried not to. The apartment was small and it was hard not to accidentally overhear conversations, but Georgie tried to ignore it or tune it out where possible out of respect.

She nodded as Viv said she had to go in to help sort stuff out for later. She tried not to feel too disappointed that their hour together was cut short, especially given it was for their own party. "You can make it up to me with some of that whipped cream vodka," she teased. She knew that she'd be seeing Viv again later, but it was never the same when there were other people around.

Georgie finished making herself lunch and headed back into her room to finish work for the day. It took a little longer than she'd anticipated, and her laptop crashing in the middle of it didn't do much to help. By the time she finished for the evening, she was more than ready for the party and to just let loose for a few hours. She changed into something less formal and strapped on a pair of heels, heading out into the apartment to finish tidying up and making sure everything was ready.

Vivian gave Georgie a grateful smile as she made her way out of the apartment, making sure to get plenty of the vodka that Georgie had asked for as a consolation. She knew she shouldn’t let a request from her boyfriend sour her mood so much, but she really cherished her lunch hour with her roommate and having to cut it short made her more upset than it should. Viv let the walk to the subway clear her head; there were a lot of things about Ray that made her love him, but it seemed that it was matched with plenty of things that made it difficult to love him. The thing that always made her focus on the positives and stay in a relationship was based on two reasons: he was the only person she still talked to from Mississippi, and a strange need for validation from her family by dating a man, even though she hadn't contacted them in years. The horrified look on her mother's face from when she kissed Laura was still plastered to her mind anytime Viv thought of her.

Viv's mind wandered to Georgie, wondering what her family was like. They hadn't been roommates long enough for Viv to notice anything about Georgie's sexuality, Viv was the one that always had her boyfriend over. She seemed like the type that was pushed by her family to be who she was no matter what she was, based on her personality and the life she lived. Viv was envious, even if she didn't know if that was true. She wanted to know more about Georgie. As much as they knew about each other, she still felt like she didn't know anything. Most of the time, other than lunch hours, Viv spent either at the restaurant or with Ray. Her thoughts were consumed with her own life and the life she perceived Georgie had that she almost walked right past the restaurant.

Ray was able to drive them back to the apartment after they stocked up on alcohol and food for the party. When Viv grabbed the whipped cream vodka, Ray turned up his nose. "Didn't think you liked stuff like that." Viv rolled her eyes, packing a couple bottles with the rest of the alcohol they'd gotten. "It's for Georgie. This is usually our time to hang out but you called me away." Like most conversations, this dissolved into an argument on whether Georgie was more important than him and that he was only getting the alcohol and food to make her happy at the party tonight. Viv was losing the energy to fight, every argument just seemed pointless. Viv let Ray ramble on and on as they made their way back to the apartment, staring out the window and ignoring every jab he sent her way. She just hoped their restaurant coworkers would keep him occupied tonight so she could actually enjoy the party instead of finding another thing to argue about.

Viv made sure they had smoothed things over by the time they were walking into the apartment, and was greeted by Georgie tidying up the place and looking stunning as ever. "Damn G, who are you trying to impress?" Viv teases, hanging up her coat and hat and helping Ray get everything inside. He was already dressed for the party, so that only left Viv to get ready. "I need to get ready. You two play nice, okay?" Viv said it in a joking manner but part of her really hoped Georgie and Ray could get along until she finished up. She was aware that they weren't necessarily fond of each other, but they were the two closest people in her life and she wanted them to get along. Forcing them together while she got herself dressed was the easiest way for her to try and force them to get along as well.

Georgie laughed as Viv asked who she was trying to impress. "Wouldn't you like to know?" She retorted with a sly grin. Part of her would have loved it if some cute girl showed up, someone she could flirt with and tease and maybe even go a little further. Just to prove to herself that her feelings for Viv were just a dumb crush. But those feelings also meant that Georgie would feel weird just flirting with someone while Viv was right there. She knew that it was irrational, she knew that there was no way anything could happen. Viv was with Ray, that was that, and it probably was for the better that she tried to move on.

Georgie forced a smile as Viv told her and Ray to get along, nodding a little. Every time, she told herself that she would make more of an effort with him. But as he once again took his position on the couch, blatantly ignoring the fact that Georgie was tidying around him, Georgie found herself becoming more and more irate. "You could help, you know." The comment slipped out, but she honestly wasn't sorry that she'd said it. It didn't, however, seem to have much of an impact.

"Not my apartment, not my party, not my problem," he said, not even looking up from his phone. Georgie had to almost physically bite her tongue to stop herself from saying anything else. She wasn't going to ruin things for Viv by starting an argument right before the party started. Instead, she just glared at him and finished tidying up.

Once she was happy with how things were, she retrieved a bottle of the requested vodka, and poured a shot of it into two glasses, before topping it up with Sprite and deliberately walking past Ray on her way to Viv's room. "I brought drinks!" She called as she let herself in.

Vivian left her door cracked as she changed for the night, hoping to step in if things became less friendly between Ray and Georgie. Viv's mind was stuck on Georgie's reply. She wondered if there was someone that Georgie was inviting tonight with that kind of mindset. She didn't want to be honest, but there was a part of her that was jealous by that thought. She had no right to be, and yet the feeling was still there. Viv didn't want Georgie to flirt with anyone else, but she was with Ray and Georgie could flirt with anyone she wanted to flirt with. The only person she actually wanted Georgie to flirt with was Viv herself, and that thought alone made her want to drink every bottle they'd brought back for the party.

Viv focused instead on getting herself ready, changing into the t-shirt and skirt she'd bought once they'd decided to hold the party. She stood in front of the mirror for a while, making sure the slit was in the right spot and the t-shirt was tied right in the middle. Ray had bought her a new belt she wanted for the outfit, and once she added her gold hoops, she felt confident in her outfit for the night. She always enjoyed showing off her legs due to the time she spent on them with dancing, and she thought it would be an outfit that both Ray and Georgie would enjoy seeing her in. It was unhealthy how much she thought of her roommate, but at the same time, she did want to be friends with Georgie and wanted to impress her friends as well. A good outfit was always the key to a good first impression.

Viv could hear Ray and Georgie talking but she couldn't quite hear what they were talking about. She was hopeful that it was at least a good conversation, she knew Ray had a habit of going to his phone when he wasn't comfortable. It was a habit he'd had since they started dating in high school, and while Viv was a social butterfly and adapted to most situations, he used his phone as a crutch to get him out of talking to people he didn't want to talk to.

Georgie came into the room as she was changing, deciding to change the white t-shirt into a black one. She was pulling the t-shirt over her breasts as the door opened, and grinned as her eyes connected with the drinks. "You're my hero, G," Viv calls out dramatically, giggling as she takes the drink and downs most of the drink in one go. After letting the taste settle on her tongue, she starts to feel the fire in her stomach straight away. "You knowhow to pick your liquor, I really like that. What all did you put in it?" Viv asks. She notices Ray standing up from the couch, his eyes finally moving from his phone to the girls in the room.

She gives him a pointed look not to cause any drama, and sits at her vanity to start getting her makeup and hair done. She takes small breaks to sip on what's left of the drink after she drank most of it, inviting Georgie to sit on her bed to chat with her. "Some of the dance girls have told me they won't be able to make it, but most of my team should be here tonight. Oh, and the restaurant guys, they'll come just for free booze," Viv comments, making a slight dig at her coworkers. The moment she could quit the restaurant she would take the chance, but she still needed money for dance.

Georgie had to suppress a blush as Viv was just pulling her top on as she entered, but grinned as Viv thanked her for the drink. Georgie raised an eyebrow as Viv downed most of her drink in one, laughing a little. She took a long mouthful of her drink. “Just some of that vodka you got me. It’s amazing for mixed drinks and shots. Best and tastiest way to get as drunk as possible as quickly as possible,” she said. She had to try not to let her eyes linger on Viv’s legs and how toned they were, how the skirt showed them off.

At Viv’s invitation to sit on the bed, she sat, crossing her legs and watching Viv applying her makeup. Her own makeup was basic, just eyeliner and eyeshadow smeared around her eyes as neatly as she could with a layer of foundation and a nude lipstick. But Viv seemed so much better at it than Georgie was, always being flawlessly up to date with the trends and able to keep up with them. She was pretty first thing in the morning with bed head and no makeup, but she was stunning when she dressed up like this.

It took her a moment to realize that Viv was speaking to her, and also that Ray was now watching them from the door. “I’m really excited to meet the rest of your team. And the staff at the restaurant, it’ll be nice to see what other talented wonderful people you spend your time with,” she said, draining her glass. “God, I’m so excited for this party, I think we all need a good time,” she said.

Knowing how to get someone’s attention on her what a skill Vivian had perfected. Other than being a performer and needing the attention to get her into prestigious dance programs and future careers, she naturally enjoyed being the center of attention, especially when said attention was coming from her pretty blonde roommate. Viv always envied how Georgie always seemed to pair her makeup and her outfits so effortlessly, rocking an alternative style that Viv thought looked best on her. Viv knew that her thoughts about her roommate’s appearance shouldn’t be so frequent, but she couldn’t help herself. She was lucky to find such a friendly and welcoming roommate in New York City, and the view was nice whether it was the city skyline outside or the roomate in question.

“I’m excited too. Our first apartment party. Better not go too crazy on me, G,” Viv teases Georgie with a giggle. She found the bottom of her cup soon after that, but she was finished getting ready so she could go to the kitchen for another one and make sure everything was set up for the guests that would be arriving soon. She rose from her chair, giving a little spin and striking a pose so that Georgie could judge her look. "So, am I party ready?" Viv asks, adding a few extra poses so all of her outfit is on display.

There was a knock at the door, giving Viv a chance to go into the kitchen and grab a drink after letting their first guests in. When Viv opened the door, she was greeted by loud yelling from her restaurant coworkers, who she honestly expected to arrive late. "Damn Viv, I knew you'd be drinking early, but save some for the rest of us, okay?" One of her female coworkers teased her as they came into the room, causing Viv to blush and glare at the girl as she went for another drink. she tried to brush off the veiled insult, teasing back as she poured another drink, "Well with coworkers like you, can you blame me?" Once she had another drink to aid her liquid courage, she immediately sought out Georgie again as Ray had taken to joking around with the same coworker that had been teasing Viv, the new line cook Kelsey.

Georgie laughed as Viv told her not to go too hard. In reality, she was barely halfway through her drink while Viv had mostly finished hers, so Georgie found herself draining her own glass to keep up. The burn was intense, but not unpleasant or unwelcome. She grinned as Viv stood up to better show off her outfit, asking if she was party ready. “Hell yeah. You look awesome, Viv,” she said. Her roommate left soon after to go let some of her colleagues in, and Georgie hung back awkwardly, sending a text to some of her friends to see where they were. Confident that they’d be there before long, she headed back out to the kitchen in search of another drink.

She had just poured herself another drink and had spotted Viv making her way over to her, when she felt a tap on her shoulder and spun around. “Is that for me?” Hayley asked with a laugh, stealing Georgie’s glass and taking a mouthful. “Piss off, Hayley, get your own,” Georgie laughed, snatching her glass back, but wrapped Hayley in a one-armed hug. “Glad you made it.” She turned back just in time for Viv to reach them.

“Oh, Hayley, this is my wonderful housemate Viv. Viv, this is Hayley, she’s one of the programmers on our team. Absolutely brilliant and far too intelligent for me to keep up with,” she added with a laugh. “Viv’s dance team just freaking killed it at a competition so we’re celebrating, hence the party. She’s crazy talented,” she said, turning back to Hayley. Hayley raised an eyebrow and smiled at Viv. “Nice to meet you, we’ve heard plenty about you. All good, of course.”

“So, come on, Georgie, are we gonna turn this into a party? Shots. Kick things off with a bang,” she said. “Oh, hell yeah. Viv, you in? Shots contest, me, you, Hayley, and anyone else you want to rope in. Some of the guys are here too right, I can probably drag them in too. We want to let loose and have fun, right?” She said eagerly, turning around to look at her housemate with excitement.

Georgie grinned with satisfaction as Viv agreed to take part and told them all to prepare to lose. Between them, Georgie and Hayley managed to rope in some of the others from the company and some of Viv’s coworkers also decided to join in. Georgie just rolled her eyes as Ray asked if Viv could handle it. “She’s a big girl, Ray, she can look after herself,” she teased as she took her first shot from Viv. She tapped her glass lightly against Viv’s and once everyone else was ready, knocked it back with ease.

Some of their coworkers bowed out early after only two or three shots. Viv made it to five. Every subsequent shot seemed to take out more and more people, until it was just Georgie and Hayley left. The room was swimming around Georgie but she felt good. Or at least she did, until shot eight finally took her out. Hayley downed her shot with triumph and threw her hands in the air. Georgie joined in in the applause and laughed at Hayley’s reaction.

“Alright then, what’s my prize?” The woman asked, sitting on the stool beside Georgie. “Fame and glory and… this,” Georgie said, reaching over and grabbing another bottle of the vodka. Hayley grimaced before laughing. “I get the impression neither of us will want to see this again in the morning.” Georgie laughed. “You probably have a point there, but I am far, far too drunk to come up with any good ideas right now.” She glanced over at Viv to make sure she was doing okay, knowing she had to be feeling the alcohol by now.

“You know… I’m with you on not having good ideas. But I do have one really bad idea,” Hayley said, with a grin and something in her expression. Georgie’s attention was still distracted, but feeling a hand on her knee snapped her attention back to the woman in front of her. There was a moment when she wasn’t quite sure how to react- and then the alcohol kicked in and she smiled, leaning in a little and resting her chin in her hand. “Oh really?”

Hayley was pretty and looked good with Georgie, that was the only thought that stuck in Viv’s head as they held the shot contest. They were obviously good friends, and Hayley started to give off vibes that Viv was sure everyone in the room could read. She was probably staring too much, watching Hayley and Georgie take down shot after shot and giggling with each other once Hayley finally won. The room went silent around her as she zoomed in on the two girls, right onto that hand on Georgie’s knee. It made Viv… too jealous. She wasn’t supposed to be this jealous when she was the one with a boyfriend, but after a dangerous amount of alcohol considering the lack of food that she’d eaten beforehand, her thoughts were consumed with her roommate.

Viv shook her head and snapped herself from her inappropriate staring, turning to her boyfriend with a drunken grin and walking straight over to him to pull his face down into a sloppy kiss. She wasn’t really sober enough to keep herself steady, but Ray’s arm wrapped around her waist and she clutched onto him. Hoots and hollering came from their coworkers until they finally pulled off of one another. ”I think you’ve already had enough to drink,” Ray teases her, though he’s finally had enough to drink to be looser than his normal self.

Viv rolled her eyes, taking his drink from his hand and ignoring his protests. ”You’re not the boss of me,” she giggles back at him, also ignoring the look of concern on his face once he sees just how drunk she is. She stumbles out of the kitchen when she hears a knock on the door, and squeals as she’s greeted by her dance team joining the party with even more alcohol. ”Vivi, you couldn’t wait on us? You’re the worst team captain,” Her teammate Monica laughed as she was pulled into a drunken hug by said team captain. Viv just giggled more, dragging her team out to the living room and turned the volume up on the music they’d put on.

The dancing dissolved from their usual structured routines into their clubbing moves. Viv dancing with her team to the latest rap music that was popular distracted her from her roommate and the woman she was getting very cozy with. She didn’t want to feel this way, but the longer she stayed in New York, especially with her new roommate, the less kept her connected to Ray. He didn’t even join her on the dancefloor when some of their coworkers came out to dance with her team members. Viv decided to forget about both Ray and Georgie for the moment and lose herself in the music and the rhythm of the bodies pressed up dancing with her.

Georgie was completely ready to go along with Hayley, to have a little bit of fun and make a dumb decision. That had been the whole point of the party, right? But then Georgie felt Viv's gaze on them, and suddenly it felt... wrong. She knew it was ridiculous. Viv had a boyfriend. She probably wasn't even attracted to girls. But there was something in that gaze, something that made Georgie reconsider. Hayley seemed to pick up on it too, and moved away slightly.

"You know what? Maybe not tonight. I think that vodka's hitting me pretty hard too," Hayley said lightly, and Georgie shot her a grateful look. "We just can't drink like we used to, huh?" Georgie joked, and Hayley laughed. "How about we go dance it off for a while?" She got to her feet and held out a hand to Georgie, and Georgie took it enthusiastically, running to the sitting room where they had their dance floor set up. Viv was dancing with the rest of her team, although they'd left behind the structured routines for just looking like they were having fun.

"This music is shit!" Hayley yelled as they reached the dance floor, and Georgie laughed, nodding. "I think Ray picked it! I had nothing to do with it!" She yelled back. Georgie took Hayley's other hand and they began dancing, crammed together on the crowded dance floor. Even if the music wasn't exactly what Georgie usually liked, there was something almost hypnotizing about the beat and the heat of the dancefloor, the movement of bodies, the glow of the lights they'd set up. They danced together for a few songs, before Hayley's grip tightened on Georgie's hand and she leaned in to her ear. "I need a smoke and some air. Wanna come?" She asked, and Georgie nodded, following her out onto their fire escape. The night air was cold, and Georgie pulled her cardigan around her a little tighter.

"So... you like her, don't you?" Hayley asked, leaning against the balcony as she lit up a cigarette. "Your roommate, I mean." Georgie had to fight back a blush.
"I... yeah. But I don't even think she's into girls, and even if she is, she's got a boyfriend."
"Yeah, I think we've all been there. Is she... okay with you being gay?"
"I... It's never come up. I forget sometimes that I actually have to come out to some people." Hayley laughed at that, and a comfortable silence fell between them, before Hayley spoke again.
"I know what it's like, trust me, I've been there. But... don't let it stop you from having some fun. Whether she's into girls or not, it doesn't matter. She's got a boyfriend, so... you've got to get over her somehow. It doesn't have to be with me, but... the only way you're going to properly get over her is to try and move on. And also if there's another woman in the apartment, saves you having to have the 'i'm gay' conversation. Two birds and all that," she said, and Georgie laughed. Out here, the alcohol seemed to be hitting a little harder. She knew that Hayley had a point, and she seemed especially pretty out here, half lit by the streetlights and her breath making small clouds in the air. Georgie was aware this probably was a bad decision and knew she'd probably regret it when she was sober, but god, just once, it felt nice to be able to make a stupid decision like this.
"You know what? I think you're right." Georgie leaned in to kiss Hayley, the other woman's lips tasting like the cigarette that was still in her hands and the burn of alcohol. And then Hayley was kissing her back, her hands wrapping through the belt loops on Georgie's shorts, pulling her in.

Dancing always helped. It had always been her escape from reality and all of its problems. It was the only thing from her old life that truly made her happy. Dancing drunk made it even easier to forget that she wasn’t happy in her relationship anymore and was crushing on her roommate. Her dance team was the closest she had to family in the city, and her girls always knew how to make her happy.

But everything came to a stand still when Viv looked towards the balcony and saw Georgie and Hayley, kissing each other with a passion she hadn’t felt herself in a while. She’d never seen Georgie kiss someone before. In a twisted way, she was relieved that Georgie was into girls, as it had never actually been discussed between the two. But that small sense of relief was crushed by a sinking feeling, the feeling that she’d lost any chance to be with Georgie. It was wrong to feel this way, considering there was never a chance to begin with if she was going to stay with Ray. Watching them kiss confirmed that she had a very real crush on Georgie, and that brought up all the bad memories of her family and what had happened when Viv had kissed a girl before.

”Vivi, you alright?” Monica tugged gently on her arm, ripping Viv’s focus from the two girls to Monica. she laughed and nodded at Monica, trying to wipe her eyes before anyone could notice that she’d started to tear up. She pulled herself from the dancing group, making her way back into the kitchen to find Ray. He was still with the same group, though Kelsey was leaning in very close and giggling at something Ray had said. Viv interrupted the group without a care if she was being rude or not, grabbing onto Ray’s wrist and pulling at him. ”Why don’t you come dance with me, baby?” Viv says as she tries to pull him out to the dance floor, but he slips his wrist from her grasp. ”Oh, you finally want to pay attention to me now?” Ray replies with a scoff, folding his arms over his chest.

Viv glared, mimicking the folding of her arms over her chest, but she was not as steady as he was and much more drunk. ”What’s that supposed to mean? You’ve been hiding in the kitchen all night,” Viv snapped back, her raised voice capturing the attention of the people dancing even with the blaring music. Ray rolled his eyes, stepping closer and growling at her, ”Vivian, you’ve been ignoring me the entire night. These people probably think that Georgie’s your girlfriend with the way you follow her around like a lost puppy.”

Viv’s eyes widen, stunned by his words. She was just coming to terms with some feelings for her roommate, but he was calling her out in front of the entire party. ”We’re hosting the party together, of course we’re going to hang out. But she’s just my roommate-“ ”Yeah, and Laura was just your study partner.”

The conversations died down around them and all the attention was on them. It would’ve been silent if not for the blaring music. Viv hadn’t thought about Laura in a while, but she felt like she was eighteen again and everything was exposed all over again. As the tears started to brim again, this time for a very different reason, she stepped back from Ray and he realized that he messed up. ”Vivian-“ ”Fuck you,” Viv spit out, her voice gravelly as she stomped over to her room and locked herself inside. She slid down against the door, ignoring the knocking on her door from several people as she pulled her knees up to her chest and started to cry. She’d lost her chance with Laura a long time ago, and tonight she’d lost her chance with Georgie too, left with a boy she didn’t really love.

The argument happening inside the apartment completely bypassed Georgie. The music drowned out the shouting, and besides, she was far more focused on Hayley. Their bodies were pressed together, her arms resting on Hayley’s shoulders, her cigarette lying abandoned by their feet. It had been a while since Georgie had done anything like this and for once, she wasn’t thinking about what would happen in the morning or what Viv would think or about... anything other than there and then. They stopped for a moment to catch their breath, and Hayley whispered something about bringing it inside. Georgie just nodded, grasping Hayley’s hand in hers. As they snuck back through the party, the mood seemed to have changed, people looking around a little awkwardly and speaking in hushed tones. She got the impression the party was more or less over- but she didn’t care. Once her bedroom door closed behind her and Hayley, their lips collided again, and Georgie forgot all about the party and about wondering what could have happened.

She slept soundly, and was only awoken by the all too cheerful chirping of her alarm. She groaned as she slapped it, but she was already unfortunately awake. Covering her eyes with one arm, she used the other hand to retrieve some painkillers from the drawer in her bedside table, swallowing them with a mouthful of day old water from her water bottle. It was only then she became aware of the other person in the bed, as Hayley sat up. “Painkillers?” Georgie said by way of greeting, holding out the bottle to her. Hayley nodded and took two, swallowing them dry. “That much vodka always seems like a good idea at the time.” She said drily. Georgie laughed. “You want coffee?” She asked and Hayley nodded. “Always. I’ll pretend to cover my eyes while you get dressed.” Georgie just shook her head and laughed, slipping out of bed and pulling on clean clothes.

Georgie appeared to have the kitchen to herself. The apartment was a bit of a mess, not really cleaned up from the night before, but things didn’t look too bad. Her and Vivian could manage it when their respective hangovers wore off. She wondered how the rest of the party had gone and if Vivian had enjoyed herself. She’d been pretty drunk last time Georgie had seen her, so Georgie just hoped she was okay. She made sure there was enough coffee in the pot for Viv and Ray as well. Hayley emerged from the bedroom just as the coffee had brewed, and Georgie handed her a cup. “Bless you. So... we were both pretty drunk last night and if... you wanted to just write it off as a drunken hook up, I won’t be too badly hurt, but-“
“No we should grab a few drinks sometime. Just us. And... what happens happens?” Georgie said, and Hayley grinned and nodded at her. “Sounds like a plan.”

Vivian didn’t come out of her room for the rest of the party. Her friends tried to coax her out, Ray had almost slept at the door before a coworker finally took him to one of their apartments, and she waited until the music died out to move from the door to her bed. She was already starting to get a hangover after the fight sobered her up some. She slowly changed out of her party outfit into her pajamas, and made a visit to the toilet to get out some of the vodka before finally falling asleep. It wasn’t a restful sleep, and she felt even more sick when she woke up.

After another trip to the bathroom, she finally decided to brave the outside of her room. The only other person would be Georgie, and though it hurt to see her kiss another girl, it would just be the two of them now. Except when she came into the kitchen, Hayley was still in the apartment, and it sounded like the kiss had dissolved into much more. Viv almost back tracked straight into her room hearing the two discuss future plans, but she reminded herself that she was the one in a relationship, and Georgie had every right to see this girl and hook up with her. It was still hard to keep walking into the kitchen, greeting the two girls in a raspy voice and immediately heading to the coffee pot.

Viv didn’t want to be awkward with Georgie. She was the best roommate Viv had ever had, and this Hayley girl seemed to be an amiable person to be around. The newly realized feelings for Georgie were swallowed down with Viv’s coffee as she sat at the counter and enjoyed the hot drink. ”Thanks for the coffee, G,” Viv mutters, looking at her coffee instead of her roommate.

She assumed Georgie had no idea of the fight that happened last night between her and Ray. They’d never had a public fight like that, and it would take time for Viv to recuperate. She had wondered why Georgie didn’t even bother to check on her, but it looked like she was preoccupied with Hayley’s lips, so it was safe to assume she was clueless. Part of her didn’t want to tell Georgie because it would only ruin her opinion of Ray further, but another part of her wanted Georgie to know about Laura, and how she did like women too. How she liked Georgie, a lot, and now she wanted a chance with her. But, with Hayley here and plans of further romancing in play, she couldn’t bring that kind of confusion into her roommate’s life. Their previous teasings and friendly flirtations would only make things harder, so Viv kept quiet. ”I’m gonna take a smoke,” Viv announced and stepped away to go out to their balcony.

Georgie smiled at Viv as she came in, looking a little worse for wear and heading straight for the coffee. It seemed that Viv wasn't in much of a talking mood, so Georgie figured she had to be feeling the effects of the vodka even harder than they were. Georgie just nodded as Viv said she was gonna go for a smoke. Hayley drained her cup and got to her feet. "I better go. Give me a text about those drinks sometime," she said with a grin. "Hey, Vivian? It was nice meeting you, great party!" She called out towards the balcony, before quickly kissing Georgie lightly on the cheek and grinning, heading out of the apartment and leaving Georgie and Vivian alone. Georgie watched Vivian for a moment, before stepping out onto the balcony to join her housemate.

"Hey, how are you feeling? You want anything to eat? I'm trying to decide if one of those almond croissants from Marco's would be a good idea or not," she said. All of a sudden, she felt the need to explain herself. She knew that she shouldn't have to, that it was her apartment as much as Viv's and she was entitled to do what she wanted, but there was something weird in the air between them. She didn't dare let herself dwell on it any more than that. "Hey, I, uh... Hope things aren't weird now. You seemed chill enough that I never thought I needed to tell you that I'm gay, but also now I kinda get that getting up to find another woman in your kitchen might be a little... weird." She realised that she had no idea what Viv's stance on the whole thing was, and suddenly prayed that she would be fine with it. Georgie had been so wrapped up in her own feelings that she'd never even really considered how Vivian would be about the whole thing, and there was a sudden twist of anxiety that Viv mightn't be okay with it at all.

Viv was in her own world out on the balcony. Even though Georgie was developing some sort of relationship with Hayley, she had to think about whether she wanted to stay with Ray. She was starting to realize it wasn’t just her feelings for her roommate that she’d finally accepted last night. She didn’t know if she dated him because she loved him or if she dated him to hold onto that last shred of her life back in Mississippi. He was the only one that knew the little church girl that loved to dance, the girl outcasted from her family because she wanted to love another woman. Having that part of herself exposed without her consent made her feel violated, and she didn’t know if keeping Ray in her life would bring more of that feeling. He only reminded her of the ugliness of her former life.

Viv jumped when Georgie joined her, she hadn’t expected her roommate to come out to the balcony, especially not so soon. Hayley must have had something to do and left after Viv came out to the balcony. She’d also been consumed by her ocean of thoughts, so she just welcomed Georgie’s presence. ”I’m definitely not touching alcohol for a while. Puking all night sucked,” Viv answers with a small chuckle, running a hand through her hair and taking a long puff of smoke from her cigarette.

Before Viv could ask Georgie of her own night, only out of courtesy as she had an idea of how it went, Georgie mentioned that she didn’t want things to be weird. Viv felt a sense of satisfaction from Georgie officially coming out to her, but it quickly deflated as she remembered the reason why she was coming out to Viv. ”It’s cool, I don’t care. Hayley… seems cool.”

Viv was still too afraid to admit she was into women, years after leaving her family and finding her place in New York. It was even harder to say anything nice about Hayley when all she wanted to do was take her place. She took another hit from her cigarette before adding, ”My mom… she was one of those conservative Christian ladies. She would never approve of anything like that. That’s a big reason why I left Mississippi a few years back.” Viv wasn’t sure she told Georgie where she was from originally, but this was the closest she could get to admitting why she left and who she really was. Bisexual was a term her mother would never accept, and Viv never really explored before diving head deep with Ray. But Georgie brought out so many feelings in her, and she wanted to explore a new side of herself, even if it wasn’t with Georgie.

There was still something a little off with Vivian, but Georgie was willing to write it off as just being a bad hangover. She’d definitely had days where she hadn’t wanted to look at another human being, let alone talk to them. The morning after a party was never a morning to read too much into things, she reminded herself. She looked up as Vivian admitted that her mom was conservative and never would have accepted anything like that. She sighed, running a hand through her hair. If she’d grown up in an environment like that, it could also explain why something seemed... off.

“Yeah. I grew up in a bubble of love and acceptance and... It was a bit of a shock when I got into the real world. Like... I knew that there were people like that out there but I’d never really encountered any of them.” She said. She knew that she was incredibly fortunate to have had a smooth a path as she’d had, and thanked her lucky stars for it every day. “Hey, you know if you ever want new parents, mine would probably adopt you in a heartbeat,” she joked.

“Do... do you miss home? Mississippi I mean?” She asked, taking a long sip of her coffee. She wasn’t sure she missed California as much as she missed being near her family. Only seeing them on her birthday and Christmas was hard, but it also made the time they did have together more special. She realised that she didn’t even know that much about Viv’s family. She didn’t tend to talk about them all that much, and Georgie realised she’d never really asked either.
