Upset over the way her parents had treated her, she applied to the DWMA at the age of thirteen, hoping to prove herself. Despite her lack of skill, she was accepted. When she told her parents she was leaving, they said nothing and simply left room. Heartbroken at not winning her parents’ approval, she left home early and was allowed to stay in the dormitories while she waited for the term to start.
Away from her haughty sister and overbearing parents, Mai actually looked forward to her academics. However, learning from books and listening to lectures just did not speak to Mai, and she frequently needed to be tutored. She more than made up for it during on-hands on learning, though, such as in combat training. Physically, she was a force to be reckoned with, and a few years later worked her way up to a two- star Meister.
At her school in Japan, she only had two friends who she was close to, the rest of her peers didn’t seem to like her much, and the feeling was reciprocated. At the DWMA, she generally gets along with people better, but she still only has a few close friends.

She has recently discovered that in addition to directing her soul wavelength to her feet and become attached to things, she can direct it to lift her feet up, causing her to float. She’s not very good at this yet, it’s very unstable and she can only go a foot in the air for a few seconds.
