"I see you."

0 · 289 views · located in The Labyrinth

a character in “Spitting Out the Demons: A Selfish Gene”, as played by VitaminHeart

Description

Name: Birdie Reid
Age: Eighteen
Gender: Female
Reason for admittance: Birdie was afflicted with a genetic autoimmune disease that caused degradation of her organs and muscle tissue over time, and had caused her to lose her sight, and ability to walk in the months leading up to her admittance.

Time in Labyrinth before mutations: One Year

AppearanceImage

Mutations: Birdie appears to have developed a large, monstrous third eye that had appeared in the cavity of her jaw, and which takes up the majority of the lower half of her face. Her mouth appears to have changed into a sort of twisted, modified eyesocket, lined with the occasional lamprey-like tooth. The eye appears to be fully functioning, though behaves and moves in odd ways that are not consistent with her normal eyes, as if it were seeing entirely different things.

Several of the digits on her hands and feet have fused together, and her finger bones on some of the unfused have elongated into sharp, potentially dangerous point.

Skills: - Despite seeming fairly unimpressive physically, Birdie apparently possesses a decent aptitude for survival, having managed to stay alive within the dark recesses of the Labyrinth complex for some months while the other subjects were in stasis.

- Birdie's third eye, being of some sort of demonic origin, gives her visions into things that others cannot see. As Birdie cannot communicate, it is unclear as to how far her knowledge extends, but it is quite possible that the powers of clairvoyance bestowed upon her by the eye have allowed her to gain a greater understanding of the nature of what is going on in Labyrinth than any other surviving individual.

- Birdie has a certain degree of artistic ability, something she attempts to put to use to convey her thoughts and ideas, though she tends to struggle to articulate things.

Weaknesses:

-With her additional eye taking up the bottom half of her face, Birdie is left mute, with her jaw forced open and immobile. She tends to communicate by notes and bizarre pictograms.

-The changes appear to have taken a large toll of Birdie, both physically and mentally. She is rather easily overpowered, tires quickly, and has little skill in a fight. Mentally she seems to be more than a little...off..prone to peculiar behaviour and inattentiveness regarding her surroundings.

Personality: Prior to the outbreak in the complex, Birdie was a subject who seemed nice enough, and remained very co-operative with the staff. In general she tended to be quite friendly, if rather quiet, tending to have a preference for spending time on her own. She had gotten rather accustomed to her own company when growing up, and as a result wasn't left craving social interaction. She was never a particularly wilful sort, tending to go along with the crowd, and abadnoning her own opinions in favor of a quiet life.

The mutations have had a considerable effect on Birdie's persona however, the changes leaving her somewhat unstable. She has the distinct look of someone who has seen things that nobody should have seen, and has become more withdrawn and distanced from others. Despite this she feels a strong sense of purpose that drives her to find the others...though whether this purpose is for good or ill...it remains to be seen.

History: Birdie's background is grounded in the unremarkable. The disease she'd been afflicted with was genetic, and meant that she had never really enjoyed good health. She spent much time alone as a child, and took to solitary pursuits like reading and drawing in order to keep herself amused. She was admitted to the program through her connections, with one of the researchers being friends with the girl's parents, who had more or less reached their wits' end by the point of her admittance.

Birdie was one of the earlier group to receive the cure, and it preceded a remarkable recovery. Within two months, all the previous symptoms had reversed themselves, and tests showed Birdie as completely healthy, her scores of stress tests coming out as even better than average. Tests continued into the nature of the protein, and when they weren't taking place, Birdie tended to wander the complex in areas that were permitted, attempting to keep herself amused.

As the first outbreak of mutations began, Birdie began complaining of acute pains in her stomach and jaw, accompanied by very vivid nightmares. The nightmares and the pains increased in intensity as the days wore on, but soon after, the complex went into lockdown, and any tracking of Birdie's condition was abandoned. What happened beyond that is left nebulous and unclear.

So begins...
