Introduction

Prologue

Mankind's home, Earth, has finally reached its limits. Centuries of exploiting resources and polluting the air have finally rendered Earth a husk of its former glory, and the last vestiges of mankind need a new home. Around the year 2250, humanity took to the stars in hope of finding that home. They had to make some sacrifices, like leave behind most of the old technology, including most firearms, deciding instead to go back to the way of the blade. Generations pass and it seems that humankind is doomed to float in the cold void of space for the rest of its days. However, one day, a strange anomaly drew the ship in and enveloped it in a blinding light. When the crew, the third generation of this particular vessel, awoke from cryostasis, they saw what they could not believe. A planet that was potentially inhabitable; A planet called Neryas. However, the ship's sensors detected that sentient life already exists on the surface, but there technology level was unknown. The crew used the ship's scanners to verify that the air is clean, so there were no pollutants from cars and factories, leading them to assume the world was not industrial yet. The energy readings also detected something strange never before seen by the human history and the crew could not verify what it was. Regardless, the humans sent engineers, scientists, and the defense force down to the planet in order to collect soil samples and get a close scan on the air. Even though initial scans showed the air to be clean, they went down in protective gear just to be safe until they can get a full reading of Neryas' atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Neryas' native beings, the Elves and the Naturan, witness something massive above their planet, just barely above orbit. The Elves, which were like those in ancient Earth's fantasy novels, read their tomes and researched to find out what this massive metal structure in the sky could be. They speculated it could be a vessel for the Spirits, finally arriving on the physical plane. Other's believed it could be a new form of magic that someone far off had perfected. The Naturan, a race of tribal, humanoid animals, simply looked on in curiosity. Were they gods? Were they benevolent or cruel? While the two races argued over what it was, the humans came down in small drop ships. This is where they story of humanity begins anew, alongside the two races of Neryas.

Lore (Please read)

Humans: The current humans have abandoned the use of firearms and have instead taken to the use of melee weapons, such as blades. On their ship, the human crew consists of engineers, scientists, and a defense force who resolves disputes through diplomacy or violence in extreme situations. Their leader is as old as their journey, having frozen himself in cryosleep and hooked his mind to the ship's mainframe, essentially becoming the ship. He can even communicate with the crew through communicators. Other than the captain, the rest of the humans have no idea what living on a planet is like other than what they've read in old books are watched on recordings. The humans on the ship are varied, as their ancestors hailed from different regions of Earth. Despite their situation, they still have a solid educational system for their children, teaching them language and the essentials needed to function in the future.

Elves: The elven civilization has two distinct civilizations around Neryas. One is grandeur and elegant, with towering marble statues and heavily artistic architecture. White and gold seem to be the most common colors used in architecture. Their buildings are often shaped with rounded archways for doors, a large dome at the top, or maybe even a spire, the latter especially true for cathedrals and other places to worship the spirits. Fine art and sculptures are the artistic choice of the city elves. Grand statues and finely designed paintings are the common works one will find in their cities. Their religion focuses on the worship of spirits, celestial beings that are said to watch over all of Neryas. Who the spirits are is left up to the interpretation of different cultures. Their weaponry, when they’re not using magic, consists of slim, long blades similar to rapiers, sabers, and epees. These weapons may be pretty to look at, but they’re efficient in combat. Their magic is primarily control of the elements, shielding magic, and life magic. Life magic is extremely difficult to use as it draws on the life energy of the caster. There is also no known spell to bring someone back from the dead.

The other group of elves is more akin to wood elves, living amongst nature and making sure their interference does nothing to harm it. Their buildings perfectly compliment their area, making it difficult for outsiders to even realize where the cities are. They’re nestled around or in the trees, and their people worship the nature spirits, who in turn give them a good hunt. With their lifestyle, they are more likely to get along with the Naturan than the city elves. Their artwork consists of clay and practical wares, not gaudy statues. They prefer to leave that to the city elves. These works again help strengthen the relationship between them and the Naturan due to trade. The Wood Elves also worship the spirits, but mostly those governing nature and natural order. Their weapons consist of bows and daggers, but they are capable of harnessing magic as well, but not as efficiently as the city elves.

Both cultures of elf are tall and slender and are known to being very polite and courteous. However, some have a tendency of being extremely pompous and get insulted when one points out a mistake. That is an extreme example though. City Elves usually take on an artistic career or hobby, such as painting, sculpting, or architecture. One of the most important days of the year to the elves, city elves in particular, is what is known as the Day of the First Spark. This was the historical moment when elven kind first tapped into the phenomenon known as magic, which was a major turning point in their cultural development. They spend this day to give thanks to those who discovered magic, whose names are lost to history. As such, they are called The Ideal, as they are who every elf tries to become one day. They set up events, activities, and use their magic to create spectacular shows of wonder to captivate and remind their people what magic has done for their culture. Wood Elves celebrate this day as well, but not to the same extent. They're more subdued and subtle. They gather flowers and artifacts to pray to and give thanks. This lasts only one night as apposed to about a week.

------------------------------

Naturan: The Naturan live in a tribal community most of the time, though there have been rumors of them creating permanent settlements lately. These supposed cities tend to be near rivers and river valleys. There are still some semi-nomadic Naturan clans that live in plains and forests. Their artwork primarily consists of carvings, trinkets and paintings, the style of which varies from realism to abstract. Their weaponry consists primarily of axes, clubs, spears, and are slightly proficient in the use of bows. However, their natural curiosity allows them to learn other skills. They can learn magic, but mostly magic pertaining to nature, such as control over plant-life and the earth.

The Naturan are physically fit and most are expert fighters as well as hunters. The Naturan celebrate grand hunts several times a year. Their best hunters go out and kill the largest prey they can find and compare it to other hunters. The winner gets a bounty of food and the honor of being celebrated for the next few days as a hero. They also participate in annual tournaments to see who's the strongest. They take pride in their strength and live by a code of honor. As such, Naturan always repay their debts and are likely to pledge their lives to those who save theirs. Arguably the most interesting aspect of their culture is their tradition known as the Dance of Scattered Blossoms. This is a Spring event where Naturan throw petals into the air and dance as the wind blows the petals away. It is common for marriages to be planned for these days, as the flying flower petals symbolize a couple's new journey together. This symbolism is thought to bring good luck to the newly weds.

When they come of age, Naturan go through what is known as The Rite of Transformation. This ceremony typically occurs when a Naturan reaches the age of 18. By connecting to the world on a spiritual level, the Naturan can learn to transform into a large, feral version of their animal. It's very exhausting to use, so it's mostly saved as a last resort. Some clans at war, however, use transformed Naturan as the vanguards in battle. It has other uses as well, such as moving items that are usually too heavy for one person to move.

------------------------------

Magic: Magic is a strange power found on Neryas. It allows the trained to control the elements and the very earth itself. However, without a catalyst, such as a specially made sword, a tome, gauntlets, or other items, magic has the potential to backfire on the user with varying severity. All across the planet is an unseen web of energy that allows the use of magic. One's natural talent in magic is determined at birth, depending on how much energy currently resides in the air. However, this does not mean they are prodigies if they are born at the right time. All practitioners of magic require much training to take advantage of their power.

Small white petals fell around the young girl, her bare feet brushing against the soft green grass beneath her. She laid down on the ground, watching the blades move back and forth through the wind, small bugs hanging onto their homes. She kept watching wondering why this was so interesting, until she smelled danger. She smelled burnt wood and burnt wood means smoke, and that means fire. Fleur got up and ran from her current spot, trying to get away from the smell but soon the fire had circled around her. It seemed as if it was talking to her. She was frightened, stiff to the bone with fear. The fire crackled like an old witch cackling through the night. The fire engulfed her and she jolted up in Niala's arms. Her body was sweating and she was frightened, fearing that it had been real. She clutched the Niala's shirt with her small hands in fear.

Connor sees the fear in Fleur's eyes and sits closer to Niala so he could be next to her. He held Fleur's hand "Fleur...don't be scared. No matter what, I'll be sure to protect you, okay?" he says, wanting her to believe him. "Fleur...do you think that the chief needs to be fought? If he stays there he'll hurt more people, not just you and me...but I don't think I can do anything about it. I don't think I'm strong enough to fight him, but I don't want him to hurt anyone else. At the same time I don't want you to be sad if anything happens to me. Fleur...should I fight? Should I keep him from hurting anyone else?" he asks. He knew Fleur was a shy child with a traumatized past, but he had hoped for an answer that would be for the good of everyone in the future.

Niala held her tight, shushing her as she rocked back and forth. "Fleur? Fleur? Shhh, safe, you're safe hun." She had dropped her tablet when the girl had started squirming in her sleep. She had seen old videos of people doing this, but was utterly lost doing it herself. The tablet translated a bit of what Connor was saying, "scared - protect - leader - fight - hurt - fight".

Fleur's eyes were petrified in fear but she soon calmed down with Connor's words and Niala's gestures. She nuzzled her face into Niala's shirt, her ears flattened against her head. She had a grip on Niala's shirt with both hands and she shook her head no. She didn't want to lose Connor and Niala. They were, nice. They were friends. Fleur didn't understand many common things in this world. Like love or the concept of family but she had heard of it. She felt safe and she worried about Niala and Connor. They were... family. Fleur pulled her face away from the shirt and said a word that she had never been able to say.

"Mama, please... please don't go away." She whispered quietly, speaking to Niala.

Niala, looked up at Connor, worried and confused, having no idea what Fleur said. But she hugged her close anyway. "Shh, Little one." She felt around with her right hand, catching on to the second neural scanner. A quick twitch of the fingers disconnected it from the tablet and as she smoothed back Fleur's hair she pressed it to the girl's temple. Multiple info sources would make the translation efforts much quicker by referencing between the two.

It was at this point Connor made his decision. If he didn't do anything, many more children would be in the same situation as Fleur if that tribe manages to gain more power. It wouldn't be today, as it was almost evening, but soon Connor would have to stand up and fight. He didn't want to endanger the humans, but he felt that he would have no chance on his own, especially since he can't transform and no doubt the chief could. It was frustrating...he was supposed to have been given the Rite of Transformation by his grandfather before the incident several years ago. He noticed the tablet on the ground and noticed the tablet registered new words. He picked it up as Niala comforted Fleur. Struggling to figure it out on his own, he lightly pressed against the words on the tablet, hearing them play back. He recited them to himself before trying to speak "Niala...Alex...help me fight leader. Protect Fleur. Protect more from getting...hurt." he said, pointing in the direction of where the Naturan ambushed them earlier. "Please...help, friends."

Alex listened to Connor's words, amazed he could form such a coherent sentence. He sighed, pondering if this was a good idea "Niala, if we agree to help, we could be getting involved in something big. We're getting involved with the natives here and that could bite us in the ass one day. On the other hand it could give us better relations with them. You seem pretty close to the kid now, so...I think you should make the decision if this is the right thing to do or not."

Niala looked panicked between the two men, "What?!?! I am in no position to make this decision, Brullen!" Mismatched eyes were blown wide as she clutched at Fleur, "What are you even talking about? I mean, sure they're friends and I don't want them to get hurt, but it's been all of three hours since we've hit surface. I cannot be making major diplomatic decisions three hours in!" She breathed hard for a moment, with wild eyes, before taking a deep breath. "Okay, okay, okay. Whew. O-K. Lets step back for a sec. Let's set up a defensible base camp and get some more information. Lets not do anything before we get our translation programs down, nothin' good will come outa going into this without knowing what people are saying."

She sighed, petting Fleur's hair. She tapped the tablet before saying in simple terms. "Fleur, Connor, Nia, Brullen. All stay. Protect all. Talk. Learn. Then, fight." The tablet took and spat out most of the words in Naturan, helped along by a couple of hand gestures by Nia.

Alex grinned "Good! I think you made the right decision there. We shouldn't get involved until we can get the general idea of what they're saying." he said. Some of the builders called Alex over to help out. Alex waved as he went over to help with the building. Connor nodded "Okay...thank you." he said. It was too soon to do anything about it now, so he decided he wanted to spend this time getting to know these humans and spend time with Fleur. He picked up a small pebble, tossing it up a few times before it suddenly suspended itself in the air. Minor magic like this was no issue to use without something to cast with, though this was really all Connor knew how to do. He simply let the pebble float around before letting it drop into his hand. Hoping the translation would pick up on what he says, he asks "Niala, what are your people called? We are called Naturan."

Niala shook her head with a sigh, watching Brullen leave. He really needed to read some of the old earth e-texts, they had tons of situations like this in them. With a quick sweep of her fingers she forwarded a few to his comm-tablet before remembering that the stupid man had left it on the ship in his room like he always does. She shook her head again, looking up at the sky, before turning to Connor as he began to talk. "Oh, dude, I'm sorry Connor, I thought I had said before. We-" she gestured to the camp, "call ourselves Human." She smiled, before her eyes caught sight of the stone that hovered in the air for a few moments longer than it should have, before dropping to the naturan's palm. She stared blinking, too bemused to say anything. That was physically impossible. This planet's gravity works just like the Ambition's anti-gravity did. You can't just toss things up and have them stay there. Macro-physics doesn't work like that.

"Humans..." he repeated. He tilted his head at Niala's bewildered expression "What is it?" he asks. He looked to the pebble and threw it into the air again, suspending it "This? It is magic. Do humans not have this?" he waves the small stone around in patterns before lightly tossing it away. It was such a normal thing to people on Neryas, that it was strange to find someone who was surprised by magic, let alone small scale abilities like lifting a pebble. The idea that humans didn't know how to use magic just amazed him even more, especially when thinking about the contraptions he found on the medical ship. He knew the elves could conjure magic light to light up pathways in the dark, but if magic didn't create those lights, what did? It was awfully confusing to him.

Alex was setting up a fence with some of the others. One of them asks if Niala will be okay with the Naturans. "Yeah, she's fine. They haven't done anything to hurt us yet, and she can handle herself. She's probably the best fighter in the combat sims back on the Ambition, even better than me." he said humbly.

Fleur clutched onto Niala, listening to the conversation. She mumbled as they spoke. Words like 'no' and 'mother'. She felt safe in Niala's arms and she wanted to stay there. Fleur tried to grab onto Niala even more, afraid that she would just vanish into thin air. It was beginning to be sundown and the labors of the day had tired everyone out. The sunset was pretty but everyone set to his or her own bed and tried to get some rest. For the humans, there was research ahead. But what was held in the future for the Naturan?

Here in the Wood Elf city, the weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful. The air felt clean and refreshing to inhale and the people were all smiling and greeting one another. Here is Yelin's home, where he felt most comfortable.
"Yelin! Could you go get some supplies please?" A familiar voice called out to him. He turned to face them after leaning against a tree outside for the past half an hour, admiring his home. It was who he saw as a mother figure to him, he gave her a firm nod and was off. "Be safe! Don't get back too late!" Even though he was old enough to take care of himself, she still worried about his safety, which felt nice to be cared about.

The male Elf wandered through the forest area of the outer sides of the city then decided it was time to actually do what he was asked to do and not waste anymore time. The docks for the ferry wasn't too crowded, not as crowded as it would get for the other higher class city elven area. He casually hopped on the ferry and noticed a few kids staring at him in awe, he glanced at them; startled they quickly looked away and his eyes returned to the view in front of him. He was used to being stared at, he looked much different from the other Wood Elves, and most of them knew his name because of this, he could see the curiosity in their eyes each time they stared at him, they wanted to ask many questions but someone like him, armed with weapons, known for using a little magic, and always lightly armored and never smiling, he didn't look very approachable.

Why was he going by ferry? Yelin wanted to visit the Grove of Spirits, it was a place he found himself deeply connected to and it felt strangely familiar. So that was where he was headed, it wasn't too far and he would make it back in time before dark, just a quick visit then he'll get the supplies, which was no biggie for him.

Niala stared wide eyed. "Um, no." She blinked a couple of times then an excited grin stretched across her face. "You mean all Naturans have magic? Does it take energy? Wait of course it does. It has to, otherwise it would be breaking thermodynamic law. Do you make the stone light? Or just hold it there with like an invisible hand? Can you do other things? How focused can you do it? Grain of sand? Boulder?" She babbled excitedly, the forgetting the tablet that was spitting out translations as well as it could.

Connor leaned back, intimidated by the sudden barrage of words. Trying to grasp what she said to him, even with the translations, Connor spoke "No...not all of us." he shook his head. "I can only lift a pebble. But...it is hard to explain. The magic just holds it there. I am sorry that I don't know more...I have never had a teacher." he says, a little ashamed. The thought of a teacher depressed him, as it reminded him of his grandfather. "How do humans make such...things?" he says, gesturing towards the ship. "If you have no magic, how is it possible? How big is it, truly?"

Alex was on the outer parts of the base, setting up a sort of early warning system that uses sonar to detect possible threats and can be viewed at all times from any PDA "That reminds me...I left mine of the ship. Oops." he said. He just shrugged it off and continued placing the sonar detectors in the area.

A considerable distance away from the camp that the humans were setting up, back towards the forest in which Connor's clan resided, a solitary figure stood atop a hill looking down at them. With his staff held to his side, Kyran looked from the gargantuan object that hovered in the sky and then back down to the tents upon the plains. There seemed little questioning that the two were connected. He could sense, faintly, the energies of the beings down there amongst the structures. Connor was one of them, and the young girl who he had been with, but the rest of the lives there were... different. He could normally tell whether someone was naturan or elven from their life-force, but these people were neither.

Some amongst the clan had foolishly suggested that they were spirits, but he could tell that was not the case. Whatever they were, they were foreign to him, something he had never encountered before. That they had seemingly taken Connor and the girl under their wing perplexed him, but reassured him that their intentions were not wholly hostile. Unless, of course, they had taken them for reasons less benevolent than he thought.

Kyran had had limited interactions with Connor in the slightly older Naturan's time with his clan, but had held more respect for him than many of the others. He had always been amiable in their interactions, but in hindsight, he had paid far too little attention to his plight. He ought to have intervened in the way the others of the clan treated him. He had to hope that it was not too little and too late to make reparations now. Whoever his new companions were, they had proven formiddable. Any open conflict would doubtless be bloody and costly.

He was content to simply observe for the moment. If he could catch Connor alone, he would see if he could speak with him about these foreign people and what they wanted, but he wanted more information before he acted in any other way. Time would provide him with that, if he was lucky. Time, and patience.

"Huh," Niala said, looking up at the sky and where the Ambition seemed to be hung against the few stars that were beginning to shyly make themselves known as the sun dipped towards the horizon. "The Ambition, our ship," She gestured upwards, "is big, really really big, compared to us. About the size of a small planet really. Oh, right, you probably don't know what planets are, umm…" She searched around on the ground with one hand, coming up with a fist sized rock and one about a eighth as big as the first. "This place-" she gestured to the surrounding landscape, "is a ball of earth floating in space among the stars. We can talk about stars later. Say your world is the size of this rock." She bounced the larger rock on her palm, the smaller kept between her pinky and ring fingers, "We are the tiniest speck of dust on the rock. The Ambition, is this smaller rock." She wriggled the fingers holding the pebble, "it's much smaller than your world, but many many times bigger than us." She smiled, still cradling Fleur against her shoulder. "Let's move inside and claim a couple of cots." the redhead lifted the smaller girl with little trouble, leading the way into one of the now lit tents.

Inside were rows of cots, each with a standard pillow and blanket. Niala claimed one, allowing Connor to take a corner cot so that he'd feel safer. "As for magic, I guess we've made up for it through years of ingenuity and invention. You use magic to lift a rock, we build a machine to lift a rock. You loose a digit or two in battle. You use magic to heal it or make a new one, we replace it with machine." With this she pulled off her right and then left gloves, revealing her natural hand and the cybernetic replacement. She shrugged, nonchalant despite the somewhat unsettling fact that she wasn't completely there. "There's a quote from many many generations ago, back on my home world. What was it… ah 'It's only magic until you understand how it works, and then it is science.' or something like that." She shrugged, leaving her hands out for inspection.

As the translator did its best to help Connor understand what she was saying, it didn't help his disbelief. Something that large being able to stay in place in the sky just seemed impossible. He withheld any further questions as this talk of planets and science was enough to wrap his head around. Entering the tent with Niala, he sat down on the cot. It was comfortable enough. When Niala showed him her artificial hand, it almost scared him. He touched her hand, a little saddened by the cool surface. He didn't want to ask her what had happened to her, as he believed that would be insensitive. Outside there was something Connor wanted to check on, and he thought it would be in everyone's best interest that he checked on it on his own. Seeing that Fleur was safe with Niala, he told her "I'll only be gone for a little while Fleur. Stay here with Niala and I will be right back, okay?" he says in a calm voice before standing up.

Connor left the tent and looked around. Earlier he felt as though someone was watching him, which made him feel uneasy. Alex sees him head towards the edge of camp. He assumed it wasn't too important and walked into the tent. Seeing Niala with Fleur, he couldn't help but laugh a little "Look who's suddenly a mother." he says as he takes a cot next to them. "The perimeter is secured and we have an early warning system set up. Nothing should be able to get the drop on us, hopefully. Still gotta get my PDA from the ship. I'll take care of that tomorrow." he says. He notices that Niala removed her gloves "How'd Connor react to the arm? I doubt people here are used to seeing metal body parts."

Meanwhile, Connor ran towards the hill Kyran was watching him from. Scaling it, he stood at the top, feeling a little uneasy. He didn't know who could be here...a scout from the village? A fighter here to capture or kill him and Fleur? He kept a steady stance, making sure he was ready for whatever might happen. "If anyone's out there...come out now and speak. I would rather not fight."

"I'm impressed," Kyran stepped into view from the rock which he had slipped behind upon Connor's approach. "You must be well attuned with the spirits to have detected my presence." The wolven naturan planted his staff in the ground, taking care to apear unthreatening, and smiled to Connor. "You needn't worry. I'm not here to cause conflict. Far from it, if I can, I want to prevent it."

He cast his eyes down past Connor and to the camp below, "Who are these people, Connor? And what do they want? I understand that they are protecting you, but that will not be the only reason they came here. The clan is concerned, to put it lightly."

Connor felt a little more at ease when he saw that it was Kyran, but still kept his guard up. "Kyran...I'm glad it's you out of everyone else. And...I just had a feeling someone was here. I do not have a strong connection to the spirits...I haven't even gone through my Rite like you have." he looks down to the camp, then back towards Kyran "They call themselves humans. They wield no magic, yet are able to create things like that thing in the sky. They call it the...Ambition. One of them, named Niala, claims it is the size of a small world. Communication has been....strange, as they do not speak our language, but they have this item that takes my words and turns them into their language somehow. As for what they want...I am not quite sure." he waits for Kyran's reaction before continuing "Why should I care what the clan wants, Kyran? You know as well as I do they do not treat me or Fleur like equals. They threatened to take Fleur away from me to use her as...I don't even want to repeat it!" he shouts angrily. "It does not matter. I've already told one of them to tell the chief I'm coming for him. I'm going to challenge him. He does not deserve his position as chief!"

"You don't need to have gone through the rite to be close to the spirits," Kyran noted with a smile, "While it is an important ritual, it merely reaffirms what is already there. You may be closer to them than you think."

His smile faded as they moved back onto more current matters. "No magic, and yet..?" he repeated with a frown, "It's difficult to believe that. Even with magic, I can't see us managing something like that. What have they been asking you? Are you sure you're safe with them?"

Kyran's expression became sourer as Connor went on, "I know that there are those in the clan who have mistreated you, Connor. And I'm sorry. If I had been more aware... well, I should have been, but it's too late for me to try and take it back now. But there are others as well, innocents -- children. If these people are a threat to us you have a duty to tell me. Not for me, not for the Chief, but for them."

He sighed, resting his hand on his forehead. "Be careful, Connor. A bloodthirsty and foolhardy leader he might be, but the chief is a formiddable warrior. There's a reason he's still the chief. I don't want you to get yourself killed."

The young Naturan girl hung onto Fleur and talked to the woman. She didn't know the woman's name though. "I'm Fleur." She began starting out shakily. "What is your name?" She asked as the translator spit out the words 'your name'. She looked at the tablet with her ears standing erect, curious about the object. She touched it lightly and it made a noise as the screen changed. She jumped, hanging onto Niala, believing that the thing was going to bite her.

Connor seemed a little guilty when Kyran mentioned the innocents in the tribe. He was right, there were still those with good hearts in the tribe...he had just let himself be blinded by his hatred of one man. "I'm sorry, Kyran, but I assure you, these people are not a threat. The most they did...was...well they examined my body and took some of my blood with some strange needle. One of their own had it done to himself as if to show me it wasn't dangerous, so I went along with it. I am safe with them. They have not done anything threatening and have protected me on more than one occasion." he says, hoping it would be enough to convince him. Connor seemed a little hesitant to continue speaking "I...I don't know if I have the strength to win...but what else can I do? I will not let someone else be in my position. If he continues his rule, who knows how many more will suffer because of it? If no one else is going to stand up, I will!" there was an intensity to his voice. A voice of a man who is sure of what he is saying and the voice of one who wants to protect others.

Alex laughed at Fleur's reaction to the tablet. He picked it up and pressed the translation icon "It isn't gonna hurt you, kid. You just turned off the translation on accident. I know you asked for her name, but I might as well introduce myself. I'm Alexander Maximus Brullen. You can just call me Alex." he says, grinning his usual grin. He gives the tablet back to Niala. "Well? The little lady asked for your name. I'm sure you said before, but the poor girl was probably addled with fear at that point to really get it."

Kyran lowered his eyes when Connor spoke, his expression conflicted. "I have disagreed with the chief for a long time, but I've always hoped to try and divert his actions through words as opposed to force. But for him to sanction..." he trailed off before speaking again, "What he was going to have done to the child... I hadn't realised it had gone so far."

Sighing, he shook his head. "I failed the both of you. And I'm sorry. But I don't want you to get yourself hurt. I don't doubt you are a capable warrior, but the Chief is ... a lot more experienced. And he's gone through the Rite of Transformation. You would scarcely stand a chance. If anyone should be challenging him, it should be ... well, someone else."

The word 'me' hung unspoken in the air where Kyran had bitten it back. He did not think that it was his place as a mystic to take such a step. But if Connor was otherwise going to... "Let me speak to him. We might still be able to solve this without bloodshed. If not, then..."

Kyran sighed again. "If it should come down to it, I will stand at your side. Not his. But please reconsider challenging him to a duel yourself. I don't want to see you hurt without need."

Niala shrugged with a smile, taking the tablet back. A quick few clicks and it was translating again, this time spending equal processing time on each language. "My name is Niala, little Fleur. You can call me Nia, though. And don't be scared of Brullen, he may look scary, but he's a big ole softy." She punched him on the shoulder, just a love tap. "Connor went off to walk through some understanding I think. Hey hey, they have freaking magic! Like levitated a stone above his hand magic. Ain't that cool!"
