Julius Andriessen

Dutch geneticist with an insatiable thirst for knowledge

0 · 801 views · located in Northern Plains of Beginnings

a character in “Star Crossed Generation”, as played by Joshman

Description

Age: 24
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Country of Origin: The Netherlands
Physical description: Long-ish blonde hair and grey eyes. 175cm and physically fit, commonly wears lab-coat.
Weapon of Choice: Classically trained with the Dutch zweihander, Julius learnt swordsmanship for the sake of tradition. After he was expelled and banned from all martial art academies for his aggression and dangerous attitude, he sought brutal techniques known as "kampfringen" under less respectable tutelage.
Personality: While his work ethic and career record show an intense enthusiasm for knowledge and improvement, his eyes are cold and calculating. As an opportunist, his friendships are based on potential helpfulness and he enjoys being needed. He's learnt to be polite to get what he wants but he has trouble controlling his anger when confronted. He will do whatever it takes to get close to those he sees as useful. Headstrong, determined and devious, he often seeks to juggle friendships with those in power through the use of flattery. Nothing will get in the way of his pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
Bio: Julius was always opposing expectations and sought to make a name for himself. He was always interested in the various forms of life and how they came to be so he stuck to learning biology and chemistry in school. During school he was known for his intensive studying and mild manners so he was bullied quite often. On the eve of his graduation, he got into a bar fight with some schoolmates and was subsequently arrested for aggravated assault and grievous bodily harm. After 2 years in prison, he was released on good behavior due to his snitch deal with the warden, something his personality helped with greatly. Under monitor and supervision, his ambition and education led to his dream job as a geneticist, suddenly an extremely promising field given the recent discoveries of alien life. Before the discovery, he was highly prized aboard the ship due to his skills in biological manipulation, enough to secure funding for his own lab.

So begins...

Connor was amazed at this technology. It took some of his words and translated them into their language. Smiling, he nods "Yes. It's correct." he said. He still didn't notice the disk attached to his temple, but he was glad he could help. He went over some of the other words, practicing them "Stars...child...grandfather." he said. This new language was strange to him, but he found himself grasping it rather quickly. Looking at Niala and Alex, then back at the tablet, he said a single word "Friends." He considered Niala and Alex such after what they have done for him and Fleur that day. He took three fruits from his bag, handing one each to Niala and Alex. He began eating the one he got out for himself.

Alex, on the other hand, was struggling to say the words in Naturan. "This is going to take me a while." he said, sighing. He saw Connor offer the fruit and realized he never had the one he gave him earlier. Since he didn't know where he put it, he accepted the new one "These things are safe to eat, right Niala?" he asks. Before getting an answer, he takes a bite out of it. "Hm...not bad." he said, chuckling before he takes another bite.

Small white petals fell around the young girl, her bare feet brushing against the soft green grass beneath her. She laid down on the ground, watching the blades move back and forth through the wind, small bugs hanging onto their homes. She kept watching wondering why this was so interesting, until she smelled danger. She smelled burnt wood and burnt wood means smoke, and that means fire. Fleur got up and ran from her current spot, trying to get away from the smell but soon the fire had circled around her. It seemed as if it was talking to her. She was frightened, stiff to the bone with fear. The fire crackled like an old witch cackling through the night. The fire engulfed her and she jolted up in Niala's arms. Her body was sweating and she was frightened, fearing that it had been real. She clutched the Niala's shirt with her small hands in fear.

Connor sees the fear in Fleur's eyes and sits closer to Niala so he could be next to her. He held Fleur's hand "Fleur...don't be scared. No matter what, I'll be sure to protect you, okay?" he says, wanting her to believe him. "Fleur...do you think that the chief needs to be fought? If he stays there he'll hurt more people, not just you and me...but I don't think I can do anything about it. I don't think I'm strong enough to fight him, but I don't want him to hurt anyone else. At the same time I don't want you to be sad if anything happens to me. Fleur...should I fight? Should I keep him from hurting anyone else?" he asks. He knew Fleur was a shy child with a traumatized past, but he had hoped for an answer that would be for the good of everyone in the future.

Niala held her tight, shushing her as she rocked back and forth. "Fleur? Fleur? Shhh, safe, you're safe hun." She had dropped her tablet when the girl had started squirming in her sleep. She had seen old videos of people doing this, but was utterly lost doing it herself. The tablet translated a bit of what Connor was saying, "scared - protect - leader - fight - hurt - fight".

Fleur's eyes were petrified in fear but she soon calmed down with Connor's words and Niala's gestures. She nuzzled her face into Niala's shirt, her ears flattened against her head. She had a grip on Niala's shirt with both hands and she shook her head no. She didn't want to lose Connor and Niala. They were, nice. They were friends. Fleur didn't understand many common things in this world. Like love or the concept of family but she had heard of it. She felt safe and she worried about Niala and Connor. They were... family. Fleur pulled her face away from the shirt and said a word that she had never been able to say.

"Mama, please... please don't go away." She whispered quietly, speaking to Niala.

Niala, looked up at Connor, worried and confused, having no idea what Fleur said. But she hugged her close anyway. "Shh, Little one." She felt around with her right hand, catching on to the second neural scanner. A quick twitch of the fingers disconnected it from the tablet and as she smoothed back Fleur's hair she pressed it to the girl's temple. Multiple info sources would make the translation efforts much quicker by referencing between the two.

It was at this point Connor made his decision. If he didn't do anything, many more children would be in the same situation as Fleur if that tribe manages to gain more power. It wouldn't be today, as it was almost evening, but soon Connor would have to stand up and fight. He didn't want to endanger the humans, but he felt that he would have no chance on his own, especially since he can't transform and no doubt the chief could. It was frustrating...he was supposed to have been given the Rite of Transformation by his grandfather before the incident several years ago. He noticed the tablet on the ground and noticed the tablet registered new words. He picked it up as Niala comforted Fleur. Struggling to figure it out on his own, he lightly pressed against the words on the tablet, hearing them play back. He recited them to himself before trying to speak "Niala...Alex...help me fight leader. Protect Fleur. Protect more from getting...hurt." he said, pointing in the direction of where the Naturan ambushed them earlier. "Please...help, friends."

Alex listened to Connor's words, amazed he could form such a coherent sentence. He sighed, pondering if this was a good idea "Niala, if we agree to help, we could be getting involved in something big. We're getting involved with the natives here and that could bite us in the ass one day. On the other hand it could give us better relations with them. You seem pretty close to the kid now, so...I think you should make the decision if this is the right thing to do or not."

Niala looked panicked between the two men, "What?!?! I am in no position to make this decision, Brullen!" Mismatched eyes were blown wide as she clutched at Fleur, "What are you even talking about? I mean, sure they're friends and I don't want them to get hurt, but it's been all of three hours since we've hit surface. I cannot be making major diplomatic decisions three hours in!" She breathed hard for a moment, with wild eyes, before taking a deep breath. "Okay, okay, okay. Whew. O-K. Lets step back for a sec. Let's set up a defensible base camp and get some more information. Lets not do anything before we get our translation programs down, nothin' good will come outa going into this without knowing what people are saying."

She sighed, petting Fleur's hair. She tapped the tablet before saying in simple terms. "Fleur, Connor, Nia, Brullen. All stay. Protect all. Talk. Learn. Then, fight." The tablet took and spat out most of the words in Naturan, helped along by a couple of hand gestures by Nia.

Alex grinned "Good! I think you made the right decision there. We shouldn't get involved until we can get the general idea of what they're saying." he said. Some of the builders called Alex over to help out. Alex waved as he went over to help with the building. Connor nodded "Okay...thank you." he said. It was too soon to do anything about it now, so he decided he wanted to spend this time getting to know these humans and spend time with Fleur. He picked up a small pebble, tossing it up a few times before it suddenly suspended itself in the air. Minor magic like this was no issue to use without something to cast with, though this was really all Connor knew how to do. He simply let the pebble float around before letting it drop into his hand. Hoping the translation would pick up on what he says, he asks "Niala, what are your people called? We are called Naturan."

Niala shook her head with a sigh, watching Brullen leave. He really needed to read some of the old earth e-texts, they had tons of situations like this in them. With a quick sweep of her fingers she forwarded a few to his comm-tablet before remembering that the stupid man had left it on the ship in his room like he always does. She shook her head again, looking up at the sky, before turning to Connor as he began to talk. "Oh, dude, I'm sorry Connor, I thought I had said before. We-" she gestured to the camp, "call ourselves Human." She smiled, before her eyes caught sight of the stone that hovered in the air for a few moments longer than it should have, before dropping to the naturan's palm. She stared blinking, too bemused to say anything. That was physically impossible. This planet's gravity works just like the Ambition's anti-gravity did. You can't just toss things up and have them stay there. Macro-physics doesn't work like that.

"Humans..." he repeated. He tilted his head at Niala's bewildered expression "What is it?" he asks. He looked to the pebble and threw it into the air again, suspending it "This? It is magic. Do humans not have this?" he waves the small stone around in patterns before lightly tossing it away. It was such a normal thing to people on Neryas, that it was strange to find someone who was surprised by magic, let alone small scale abilities like lifting a pebble. The idea that humans didn't know how to use magic just amazed him even more, especially when thinking about the contraptions he found on the medical ship. He knew the elves could conjure magic light to light up pathways in the dark, but if magic didn't create those lights, what did? It was awfully confusing to him.

Alex was setting up a fence with some of the others. One of them asks if Niala will be okay with the Naturans. "Yeah, she's fine. They haven't done anything to hurt us yet, and she can handle herself. She's probably the best fighter in the combat sims back on the Ambition, even better than me." he said humbly.

Fleur clutched onto Niala, listening to the conversation. She mumbled as they spoke. Words like 'no' and 'mother'. She felt safe in Niala's arms and she wanted to stay there. Fleur tried to grab onto Niala even more, afraid that she would just vanish into thin air. It was beginning to be sundown and the labors of the day had tired everyone out. The sunset was pretty but everyone set to his or her own bed and tried to get some rest. For the humans, there was research ahead. But what was held in the future for the Naturan?

Niala stared wide eyed. "Um, no." She blinked a couple of times then an excited grin stretched across her face. "You mean all Naturans have magic? Does it take energy? Wait of course it does. It has to, otherwise it would be breaking thermodynamic law. Do you make the stone light? Or just hold it there with like an invisible hand? Can you do other things? How focused can you do it? Grain of sand? Boulder?" She babbled excitedly, the forgetting the tablet that was spitting out translations as well as it could.

Connor leaned back, intimidated by the sudden barrage of words. Trying to grasp what she said to him, even with the translations, Connor spoke "No...not all of us." he shook his head. "I can only lift a pebble. But...it is hard to explain. The magic just holds it there. I am sorry that I don't know more...I have never had a teacher." he says, a little ashamed. The thought of a teacher depressed him, as it reminded him of his grandfather. "How do humans make such...things?" he says, gesturing towards the ship. "If you have no magic, how is it possible? How big is it, truly?"

Alex was on the outer parts of the base, setting up a sort of early warning system that uses sonar to detect possible threats and can be viewed at all times from any PDA "That reminds me...I left mine of the ship. Oops." he said. He just shrugged it off and continued placing the sonar detectors in the area.

A considerable distance away from the camp that the humans were setting up, back towards the forest in which Connor's clan resided, a solitary figure stood atop a hill looking down at them. With his staff held to his side, Kyran looked from the gargantuan object that hovered in the sky and then back down to the tents upon the plains. There seemed little questioning that the two were connected. He could sense, faintly, the energies of the beings down there amongst the structures. Connor was one of them, and the young girl who he had been with, but the rest of the lives there were... different. He could normally tell whether someone was naturan or elven from their life-force, but these people were neither.

Some amongst the clan had foolishly suggested that they were spirits, but he could tell that was not the case. Whatever they were, they were foreign to him, something he had never encountered before. That they had seemingly taken Connor and the girl under their wing perplexed him, but reassured him that their intentions were not wholly hostile. Unless, of course, they had taken them for reasons less benevolent than he thought.

Kyran had had limited interactions with Connor in the slightly older Naturan's time with his clan, but had held more respect for him than many of the others. He had always been amiable in their interactions, but in hindsight, he had paid far too little attention to his plight. He ought to have intervened in the way the others of the clan treated him. He had to hope that it was not too little and too late to make reparations now. Whoever his new companions were, they had proven formiddable. Any open conflict would doubtless be bloody and costly.

He was content to simply observe for the moment. If he could catch Connor alone, he would see if he could speak with him about these foreign people and what they wanted, but he wanted more information before he acted in any other way. Time would provide him with that, if he was lucky. Time, and patience.

"Huh," Niala said, looking up at the sky and where the Ambition seemed to be hung against the few stars that were beginning to shyly make themselves known as the sun dipped towards the horizon. "The Ambition, our ship," She gestured upwards, "is big, really really big, compared to us. About the size of a small planet really. Oh, right, you probably don't know what planets are, umm…" She searched around on the ground with one hand, coming up with a fist sized rock and one about a eighth as big as the first. "This place-" she gestured to the surrounding landscape, "is a ball of earth floating in space among the stars. We can talk about stars later. Say your world is the size of this rock." She bounced the larger rock on her palm, the smaller kept between her pinky and ring fingers, "We are the tiniest speck of dust on the rock. The Ambition, is this smaller rock." She wriggled the fingers holding the pebble, "it's much smaller than your world, but many many times bigger than us." She smiled, still cradling Fleur against her shoulder. "Let's move inside and claim a couple of cots." the redhead lifted the smaller girl with little trouble, leading the way into one of the now lit tents.

Inside were rows of cots, each with a standard pillow and blanket. Niala claimed one, allowing Connor to take a corner cot so that he'd feel safer. "As for magic, I guess we've made up for it through years of ingenuity and invention. You use magic to lift a rock, we build a machine to lift a rock. You loose a digit or two in battle. You use magic to heal it or make a new one, we replace it with machine." With this she pulled off her right and then left gloves, revealing her natural hand and the cybernetic replacement. She shrugged, nonchalant despite the somewhat unsettling fact that she wasn't completely there. "There's a quote from many many generations ago, back on my home world. What was it… ah 'It's only magic until you understand how it works, and then it is science.' or something like that." She shrugged, leaving her hands out for inspection.

As the translator did its best to help Connor understand what she was saying, it didn't help his disbelief. Something that large being able to stay in place in the sky just seemed impossible. He withheld any further questions as this talk of planets and science was enough to wrap his head around. Entering the tent with Niala, he sat down on the cot. It was comfortable enough. When Niala showed him her artificial hand, it almost scared him. He touched her hand, a little saddened by the cool surface. He didn't want to ask her what had happened to her, as he believed that would be insensitive. Outside there was something Connor wanted to check on, and he thought it would be in everyone's best interest that he checked on it on his own. Seeing that Fleur was safe with Niala, he told her "I'll only be gone for a little while Fleur. Stay here with Niala and I will be right back, okay?" he says in a calm voice before standing up.

Connor left the tent and looked around. Earlier he felt as though someone was watching him, which made him feel uneasy. Alex sees him head towards the edge of camp. He assumed it wasn't too important and walked into the tent. Seeing Niala with Fleur, he couldn't help but laugh a little "Look who's suddenly a mother." he says as he takes a cot next to them. "The perimeter is secured and we have an early warning system set up. Nothing should be able to get the drop on us, hopefully. Still gotta get my PDA from the ship. I'll take care of that tomorrow." he says. He notices that Niala removed her gloves "How'd Connor react to the arm? I doubt people here are used to seeing metal body parts."

Meanwhile, Connor ran towards the hill Kyran was watching him from. Scaling it, he stood at the top, feeling a little uneasy. He didn't know who could be here...a scout from the village? A fighter here to capture or kill him and Fleur? He kept a steady stance, making sure he was ready for whatever might happen. "If anyone's out there...come out now and speak. I would rather not fight."

"I'm impressed," Kyran stepped into view from the rock which he had slipped behind upon Connor's approach. "You must be well attuned with the spirits to have detected my presence." The wolven naturan planted his staff in the ground, taking care to apear unthreatening, and smiled to Connor. "You needn't worry. I'm not here to cause conflict. Far from it, if I can, I want to prevent it."

He cast his eyes down past Connor and to the camp below, "Who are these people, Connor? And what do they want? I understand that they are protecting you, but that will not be the only reason they came here. The clan is concerned, to put it lightly."

Julius rubbed his eyes sleepily as he stared at the monitor in front of him. Even with all this technology, there was no rushing the biological specimens. Each one had to be carefully recorded and cataloged which took time. As the sequencing was ongoing, there was sill plenty to do in the meantime. Julius had spent hours operating various machines and computers, trying to achieve as much as he could as quickly as possible. In his lab he had access to everything he could ever want, scientifically. A few lab personnel were responsible for getting everything through quarantine and Julius had the pleasure of dissecting the plants that had been gathered. So far there had been no harmful substances of note, however a few of the plants were remarkably similar to those that had been back on Earth. He knew that, being made of basically the same compounds, he could expect to find many more with similar properties, some healing, others harming.

Eventually there was a point where his curiosity had been sated with what he had in front of him. An expedition would have to be made in order to expand the research but in the meantime Julius had to rest. As his mind was swimming with endless possibilities, sleep came slowly. There was so much more to be done and if the inter-racial encounters on Earth were anything to go by, things may not be all that smooth. Julius wondered if the locals would be willing to trade with the humans when they made contact with a substantial village or town. These things were best taken slowly and by somebody well-equipped for handling foreigners. Perhaps he would spend more of his time with the natural side of things, especially if this was to be the new home of humanity. It would be best to fully understand the nature of the planet before attempting a settlement of any duration. As he slept, Julius dreamt of new discoveries and breakthroughs in all kinds of scientific fields.
