Julius Andriessen

Dutch geneticist with an insatiable thirst for knowledge

0 · 800 views · located in Northern Plains of Beginnings

a character in “Star Crossed Generation”, as played by Joshman

Description

Age: 24
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Country of Origin: The Netherlands
Physical description: Long-ish blonde hair and grey eyes. 175cm and physically fit, commonly wears lab-coat.
Weapon of Choice: Classically trained with the Dutch zweihander, Julius learnt swordsmanship for the sake of tradition. After he was expelled and banned from all martial art academies for his aggression and dangerous attitude, he sought brutal techniques known as "kampfringen" under less respectable tutelage.
Personality: While his work ethic and career record show an intense enthusiasm for knowledge and improvement, his eyes are cold and calculating. As an opportunist, his friendships are based on potential helpfulness and he enjoys being needed. He's learnt to be polite to get what he wants but he has trouble controlling his anger when confronted. He will do whatever it takes to get close to those he sees as useful. Headstrong, determined and devious, he often seeks to juggle friendships with those in power through the use of flattery. Nothing will get in the way of his pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
Bio: Julius was always opposing expectations and sought to make a name for himself. He was always interested in the various forms of life and how they came to be so he stuck to learning biology and chemistry in school. During school he was known for his intensive studying and mild manners so he was bullied quite often. On the eve of his graduation, he got into a bar fight with some schoolmates and was subsequently arrested for aggravated assault and grievous bodily harm. After 2 years in prison, he was released on good behavior due to his snitch deal with the warden, something his personality helped with greatly. Under monitor and supervision, his ambition and education led to his dream job as a geneticist, suddenly an extremely promising field given the recent discoveries of alien life. Before the discovery, he was highly prized aboard the ship due to his skills in biological manipulation, enough to secure funding for his own lab.

So begins...

A considerable distance away from the camp that the humans were setting up, back towards the forest in which Connor's clan resided, a solitary figure stood atop a hill looking down at them. With his staff held to his side, Kyran looked from the gargantuan object that hovered in the sky and then back down to the tents upon the plains. There seemed little questioning that the two were connected. He could sense, faintly, the energies of the beings down there amongst the structures. Connor was one of them, and the young girl who he had been with, but the rest of the lives there were... different. He could normally tell whether someone was naturan or elven from their life-force, but these people were neither.

Some amongst the clan had foolishly suggested that they were spirits, but he could tell that was not the case. Whatever they were, they were foreign to him, something he had never encountered before. That they had seemingly taken Connor and the girl under their wing perplexed him, but reassured him that their intentions were not wholly hostile. Unless, of course, they had taken them for reasons less benevolent than he thought.

Kyran had had limited interactions with Connor in the slightly older Naturan's time with his clan, but had held more respect for him than many of the others. He had always been amiable in their interactions, but in hindsight, he had paid far too little attention to his plight. He ought to have intervened in the way the others of the clan treated him. He had to hope that it was not too little and too late to make reparations now. Whoever his new companions were, they had proven formiddable. Any open conflict would doubtless be bloody and costly.

He was content to simply observe for the moment. If he could catch Connor alone, he would see if he could speak with him about these foreign people and what they wanted, but he wanted more information before he acted in any other way. Time would provide him with that, if he was lucky. Time, and patience.

"Huh," Niala said, looking up at the sky and where the Ambition seemed to be hung against the few stars that were beginning to shyly make themselves known as the sun dipped towards the horizon. "The Ambition, our ship," She gestured upwards, "is big, really really big, compared to us. About the size of a small planet really. Oh, right, you probably don't know what planets are, umm…" She searched around on the ground with one hand, coming up with a fist sized rock and one about a eighth as big as the first. "This place-" she gestured to the surrounding landscape, "is a ball of earth floating in space among the stars. We can talk about stars later. Say your world is the size of this rock." She bounced the larger rock on her palm, the smaller kept between her pinky and ring fingers, "We are the tiniest speck of dust on the rock. The Ambition, is this smaller rock." She wriggled the fingers holding the pebble, "it's much smaller than your world, but many many times bigger than us." She smiled, still cradling Fleur against her shoulder. "Let's move inside and claim a couple of cots." the redhead lifted the smaller girl with little trouble, leading the way into one of the now lit tents.

Inside were rows of cots, each with a standard pillow and blanket. Niala claimed one, allowing Connor to take a corner cot so that he'd feel safer. "As for magic, I guess we've made up for it through years of ingenuity and invention. You use magic to lift a rock, we build a machine to lift a rock. You loose a digit or two in battle. You use magic to heal it or make a new one, we replace it with machine." With this she pulled off her right and then left gloves, revealing her natural hand and the cybernetic replacement. She shrugged, nonchalant despite the somewhat unsettling fact that she wasn't completely there. "There's a quote from many many generations ago, back on my home world. What was it… ah 'It's only magic until you understand how it works, and then it is science.' or something like that." She shrugged, leaving her hands out for inspection.

As the translator did its best to help Connor understand what she was saying, it didn't help his disbelief. Something that large being able to stay in place in the sky just seemed impossible. He withheld any further questions as this talk of planets and science was enough to wrap his head around. Entering the tent with Niala, he sat down on the cot. It was comfortable enough. When Niala showed him her artificial hand, it almost scared him. He touched her hand, a little saddened by the cool surface. He didn't want to ask her what had happened to her, as he believed that would be insensitive. Outside there was something Connor wanted to check on, and he thought it would be in everyone's best interest that he checked on it on his own. Seeing that Fleur was safe with Niala, he told her "I'll only be gone for a little while Fleur. Stay here with Niala and I will be right back, okay?" he says in a calm voice before standing up.

Connor left the tent and looked around. Earlier he felt as though someone was watching him, which made him feel uneasy. Alex sees him head towards the edge of camp. He assumed it wasn't too important and walked into the tent. Seeing Niala with Fleur, he couldn't help but laugh a little "Look who's suddenly a mother." he says as he takes a cot next to them. "The perimeter is secured and we have an early warning system set up. Nothing should be able to get the drop on us, hopefully. Still gotta get my PDA from the ship. I'll take care of that tomorrow." he says. He notices that Niala removed her gloves "How'd Connor react to the arm? I doubt people here are used to seeing metal body parts."

Meanwhile, Connor ran towards the hill Kyran was watching him from. Scaling it, he stood at the top, feeling a little uneasy. He didn't know who could be here...a scout from the village? A fighter here to capture or kill him and Fleur? He kept a steady stance, making sure he was ready for whatever might happen. "If anyone's out there...come out now and speak. I would rather not fight."

"I'm impressed," Kyran stepped into view from the rock which he had slipped behind upon Connor's approach. "You must be well attuned with the spirits to have detected my presence." The wolven naturan planted his staff in the ground, taking care to apear unthreatening, and smiled to Connor. "You needn't worry. I'm not here to cause conflict. Far from it, if I can, I want to prevent it."

He cast his eyes down past Connor and to the camp below, "Who are these people, Connor? And what do they want? I understand that they are protecting you, but that will not be the only reason they came here. The clan is concerned, to put it lightly."

Julius rubbed his eyes sleepily as he stared at the monitor in front of him. Even with all this technology, there was no rushing the biological specimens. Each one had to be carefully recorded and cataloged which took time. As the sequencing was ongoing, there was sill plenty to do in the meantime. Julius had spent hours operating various machines and computers, trying to achieve as much as he could as quickly as possible. In his lab he had access to everything he could ever want, scientifically. A few lab personnel were responsible for getting everything through quarantine and Julius had the pleasure of dissecting the plants that had been gathered. So far there had been no harmful substances of note, however a few of the plants were remarkably similar to those that had been back on Earth. He knew that, being made of basically the same compounds, he could expect to find many more with similar properties, some healing, others harming.

Eventually there was a point where his curiosity had been sated with what he had in front of him. An expedition would have to be made in order to expand the research but in the meantime Julius had to rest. As his mind was swimming with endless possibilities, sleep came slowly. There was so much more to be done and if the inter-racial encounters on Earth were anything to go by, things may not be all that smooth. Julius wondered if the locals would be willing to trade with the humans when they made contact with a substantial village or town. These things were best taken slowly and by somebody well-equipped for handling foreigners. Perhaps he would spend more of his time with the natural side of things, especially if this was to be the new home of humanity. It would be best to fully understand the nature of the planet before attempting a settlement of any duration. As he slept, Julius dreamt of new discoveries and breakthroughs in all kinds of scientific fields.

Niala spent the night as Fleur's pillow, working through codes on her tablet in between sporadic naps. She connected with the Ambition using the shuttle as an antenna, organizing the data gathered by the shuttle and transmitting it to the rest so that their AIs could make allowances for the conditions. She wrote up her own report to send with the rest, with more information on the Naturans given that she had spent the most time in close proximity to them. She sent a message in text to Julius, telling him about the Naturan's apparent ability to harness energy to perform feats that seem impossible. Magic is such a non-specific term. As far as I've seen it is telekinesis, though they may be able to do other things. She wrote.

The air surrounding the hillock where Connor and Kyran met seemed fresher than before, like the air just after a spring rain. Even the plants themselves looked greener, small flowers blooming amongst the the grass. For those accustomed to the feel of magic the atmosphere near hums with it, though instead of an intimidating pressure it is a gentle caress, a caring melody that soothes the soul. This sort of thing has been inexplicably occurring in the area over the past few months, though at times people have found a small figurine of a bird or a bowl or cup in the center. This was true in this instance as well, a ceramic bowl with a deep blue glaze sat at the top of the hill, full of clear water. Hidden from view by strong magics was the true source of the aura, an elven woman with blue-black hair stood silently, waiting, her eyes trained in the direction of the human's camp.

After lingering around the Grove of Spirits for a while, he assumed that the Naturan were probably the cause of the odd feeling was getting there, a lot of them seemed to go there and they were nearby the Grove, he wanted to avoid running into them to be honest. Yelin hadn't ever spoken to one before, of course he had seen them a few times for trade and what not but he had never conversed with them, he saw no reason to either.
The Elf decided to go back through the Northern Plains to get back home, but he found himself quickly stopping where he stood. Something wasn't right. He backed up and crouched down behind some thick, green bushes and plants. Yelin had a strange feeling again, except it was stronger this time, he had to be very careful and cautious as ever. He scanned his surroundings and noticed something odd, a camp? His eyes would stay fixed on this camp, he couldn't quite see anyone clearly or at all with all the brush blocking his vision, but he wouldn't let his curiosity get the better of him this time, no, he'd wait until he saw what or who was in this camp and what they were doing. The Elf would have to apologise to the Wood Elves, he'd be a lot later than usual with the supplies. All the meanwhile he was completely unaware of the female Elf who was also watching the camp.

As the morning sun rose on the horizon, Connor was already awake and wandering around camp. Some of the humans tried to speak to him to no avail. Whenever Connor isn't serious about something, he was extremely nervous and shy around strangers, to the point he avoids eye contact with most. At the moment he is patiently waiting for the time he is supposed to meet Kyran. He knows they planned to meet during the afternoon, but he knew he could arrive at any time given certain circumstances.

Alex yawned as he walked out of the tent, blinded by the light of the sun "Natural light..." he groaned, but really he appreciated the beauty of the sunrise. He sees Connor pacing about camp with a nervous expression on his face. "Wonder what's going on with him...probably has something to do with whatever happened yesterday." he said. He realized he had some business up on the Ambition, so he suited up and got in one of the carriers. He told one of the guards to let Niala know where he was before the ship took off.

Connor looked up in awe as the ship flew into the sky towards the Ambition. "Wow..." he pondered just how much the humans could do compared to the Naturan and the Elves. Were they insignificant to them? Were they inferior? Questions like that worried him and actually had him question if the humans really are here peacefully. He shook his head, knowing that with all species there will good and bad people. He felt comfortable with Niala and Alex, for they protected him and taught him. There was no way they would do anything bad to him or Fleur. Comfortable with that thought, he went to a remote location where there weren't many people around and started practicing what looked like martial art forms. Most of his strikes were kicks and knee strikes, along with a few basic punches or elbow hits. Some of his movements also seemed to indicate counters and throws as well. As of right now he was unaware of the elves watching the camp.

"And we should be, after all the time spent altering our own bodies." Julius said as he entered the tent. "It's human nature to try and be the best we possibly can. Sorry, am I interrupting?"
Julius was geared up and ready for an expedition. He had his PDA and field kit with him as well as his sword in case things got nasty. "What I'm interested in is these guys' nature. From what I've been able to deduce, they're not what they seem. Thanks for the update on the so-called 'magic', Niala. I have some theories about the way their bodies work but I'll need to run some more tests and perhaps observe a few demonstrations later on."

After hearing Niala's story, Connor fully understood the reasoning for the artificial limbs. There were many old warriors who have lost the use of a limb and something like that would allow them to fully live their lives again. However...he didn't approve of replacing a perfectly working limb with a fake one. "I'm sorry to hear what happened to you, Niala...though what you have is amazing. I would never be able to imagine working body parts being made out of metal or whatever else you humans might have. I just...don't like the thought of someone choosing to sacrifice a limb if it is still working. It seems a waste." he says. He hears her mention of ships and boats "Oh, yes we have those. Naturans tend to stay close to where the tribe lives. Even nomadic tribes like to stay to the land they are comfortable with, though I have heard of some who brave to vast waters. If you want to talk about larger ships, the elves of the city will be the ones to speak to." he says. Come to think of it, this was the first time he had even mentioned elves. "I failed to mention before, but the Naturan are not the only people of Neryas. There are the elves of the wild and the elves of the city as well." he explains. He wanted to hear more about human culture and tell them more about his culture. This was fascinating to him and these were the first people in a very long time he would consider friends aside from Kyran and Fleur. He knows there are matters to attend to, however, so he decides to wait for a more opportune time to speak.

Alex, meanwhile, was speaking to Julius "Looks like you're all good and prepared. You couldn't have picked a better time either since we got two locals here who can be our guides if they want." He looks to Kyran "You there...I'm not sure what your name is, but would you be willing to show us around the immediate area? We saw those ruins yesterday...I think Connor said it was called the Grove of the Ancients or something like that. Are there any other places of note we can possibly see?" he asks, hoping that the translator caught all that. He turns back to Julius "About those tests...make sure it is purely voluntary. I don't want to catch word of you promising them some kind of compensation or tricking them, alright?" he said in a stern tone. He was less harsh to Julius than he was before, but wanted to make sure he wouldn't do anything extreme.

Kyran raised a curious eyebrow when Niala spoke on the subject of the humans coming from another planet. "Another planet? Which one?" he queried, assuming that she meant one of the planets that could be seen at some times of the year, those within Neryas' solar system. Their point of origin could mean any number of things, in accordance with the beliefs the Naturan people held about each planet and its associations with mythology and religion. "A ship that can fly as high as the stars... the prospect is unfathomable, but having witnessed your flying metal craft, I'm finding myself easily believing things that I would have thought impossible yesterday."

As Niala's replacement limb was discussed, Kyran let his eyes run over it with a slight frown. It was unnerving, that they had replicated their own bodies in metal - and more unusual still that it was functional. An image of metallic soldiers ran briefly through his mind before he pushed it away with a suppressed grimace. "If not magic, how is it that such a limb functions?" he asked, "Is it a trait of your people to be able to meld with metal, and shape metal into these flying ships?"

Kyran turned to Alex when he was addressed, inclining his head. "Kyran." he informed him, "And aside from the Grove of the Spirits, the closest places of note are our village and the elven city of Ifanriel. There are also elven settlements within the forest, and other naturan clans, but they are deep within the forest, and many hold ill will towards those of our clan due to past conflicts with the Chief and his warriors."

Niala shook her head, "We are from a planet called Earth, but it is far far away from here. Here, one sec." She tapped away for a few seconds on her tablet, "Oh, nice, you can see our sun from here." She flipped the tablet and pointed out a small star that was part of their summer sky, "That star there? That's the sun our planet is orbiting, or was. Time is weird and wibbly wobbly when you get to great distances. And I could say the same for you! Your magic as of yet defies our understanding of physics." She smiled with a laugh, "We connect to them because we understand our bodies in a different way. Electricity powers everyone at a very small scale, same goes with our replacement limbs. And they work mechanically as well, it's basically like a series of levers and pulleys at the most basic scale. They're actually made just using physical force and heat to shape them." She shook her head, realizing that she was starting to ramble. "It would take a long time to explain it. Very few people are actually augmented as far as me."

Nia reached over and nudged Brullen with a foot, "You're being an ass again." She said, not looking at him, instead focussing on Julius. "Did you bring an EMF detector? It's not something I thought to put into my tablet, and would probably be useful. That would be my hypothesis, but hey, I'm just a tech." She shrugged.

Turning back to Kyran, "But from what you said your village's chief, Goliath was it? Do ya have a little guy named David too?" She laughed at the reference but shook her head when they didn't get it. "Sorry sorry, human thing. He seems to be on the outs with the rest. Will the other settlements still hold you guys in with what he did when he's no longer chief?"

Connor listened with interest when Niala explained where the sun was "So...all stars are actually suns that are really far away?" he found this a little difficult to think about considering it contradicts with his belief that they're supposed to represent spirits. "This is a little hard to accept but...if you're right then there's just so much about life we don't understand." he said. He would continue to believe that stars represented ancestral spirits out of respect for tradition, but would not deny fact if shown to him regardless of how hard it was to believe. He smiled when Niala spoke of the parallel between magic and technology, how both are just as confusing to the other. "You should see what some can do. Masters can make amazing things happen with a snap of their fingers. Much more than just lift a pebble." he seemed really upset about the fact that he wasn't very specialized in magic. "One thing about our magic is that it depends on when we're born. Anyone on Neryas can train, but some are born with stronger magical potential because of the time of the year. I was born on one of the best times, but I never grasped it for some reason." he explains. Hearing Niala's attempted joke about David and Goliath made him interested "You'll have to explain that one to me later. It sounds interesting."

Alex groaned as he got scolded by Niala....again. He continues his conversation with Kyran "I'm not entirely sure if going to another settlement right now would be a great idea...we've already got one situation we're dealing with involving Connor. We'll just scout around the wilderness and gather some of your flora and see some of your wildlife. It'd be nice for you to come along and let us know if anything out there will kill us if we mishandle it." he said. He figured it would be a good idea to have information on any plants that might be poisonous or any animal that could be aggressive.

Kyran frowned, his mind boggling slightly at the prospect of each star being akin to their own sun, with planets and all. "Electricity?" he queried, "I... well, I can't say I understand. But I grasp that you are from beyond our knowledge of the world."

The young mystic shook his head, running over the information internally a few times. He wasn't going to outright reject the explanation, but it would take him a while to reconcile it with what he knew about the spirits. Talk of magic brought his attention back to the conversation at hand. "I would be happy to demonstrate some magic for you. It is my speciality, as a mystic, to commune with the spirits and utilise their strength. As for the other clans... I cannot say whether they will be receptive to a clean slate should Goliath be unseated. They have plenty of reasons to hate our clan due to his actions. Wounds like that will not heal quickly."

He glanced across to Alex then, "I can do that. Though as some plants affect us and the elves in different ways, so too may they affect you differently."
