The Grove of the Spirits...a peaceful place that was once an elven community a long time ago. Now, nature has reclaimed this area for itself, leaving only crumbling pillars and buildings. The Naturan that settled in the nearby village of Vistara now use it as a meditative place, especially during a young Naturan's Rite of Transformation. Connor Tavarin, a young man who lost much, feels rejected by his new clan. He doesn't even remember the last time he cracked a smile.

Connor was supposed to be out gathering supplies for the village, but he decided to make a quick stop here. Placing his palm on the tree between old pillars, he sighed, pondering the reason why this clan treated him so. "Mother...Father...Grandfather...if you can hear me, I'm safe. Safe but alone. This new clan treats me like an outcast. I have done nothing wrong other than survive that ordeal...though maybe the blood I spilled during our imprisonment is the reason. I will continue to live...for all of you." he says before taking his hand off the tree. He didn't know if any of his messages even reach his family, but it brought him some comfort. He looks at an old base of a pillar and decides to sit down, resting his back against it. A gentle breeze blew through the grove, causing his long hair and his fur to sway slightly.

Unlike many little Naturan girls, Fleur liked to climb trees. At the top lie the sweetest fruit she had ever tasted. As she swiftly made her way up the tree, she heard a voice. She grabbed two of the fruit and then dropped down to a lower branch, still hidden but able to see the new person. She was always cautious when people approached her, or even came near her. She took a small bite out of the fruit watching the man from the trees. Her black hair was dirty as was the rest of her body. She was never able to take care of her personal hygiene. She studied the new person as he sat in front of one of the pillars close to the tree. She felt the breeze blow and when she moved to see the man better, her foot slipped. She plummeted to the ground, the fruit landing near the new person.

"Ow...." She mumbled, not noticing that the other was looking at her now.

Connor gasped as he heard the loud thud. He looks down to see a fruit roll his way. Picking it up, he recognized it and gave a very small smile as he really liked this particular fruit. He stored it in a small bag he carried with him so he could focus on finding out the source of the noise. He walked over to find the young Naturan girl, Fleur. He extended a hand to help her up, not saying a word in the process. There was a moment of silence before he finally said "Please be more careful." He sits down, facing away from her. After another period of silence, he turned to her and asked "Are you hurt?" Connor had no dislike for this girl, he just had issues regarding trust, which is normal for people who experienced what he did. People around the village often mocked him for being very emotional and for his refusal to test his strength against the other Naturan. Some even saw him as arrogant for it, as if he knew he could beat them all, which definitely wasn't the case. Regardless, Connor spoke very few words to anyone, but it was against his nature to ignore someone who might be hurt.

Fleur sniffled quietly as the other faced away from her. She was the outcast. The little girl with no parents. Fleur's ears flattened against her head as she tried to rub her eyes to stop the tears. She normally cried by herself, not having a parental figure to hug her and say it would be alright. She sniffled even when he turned around to her asking if she was hurt. She was always hurt. She had bruises and cuts from trying to survive after being told she had to get her own food. Most children didn't have any blemishes but Fleur isn't most children. She wiped her eyes, trying to wipe away the tears before he saw them, thinking that he would call her weak.

Connor saw the child cry and immediately knew she was like him. An outcast for some unexplained reason. This clan had no idea what it was like to be a family or assist their downtrodden brethren. He pulled out some wraps and a vial of a mixture from his bag "I made this earlier this morning for emergencies. This will sting a little, okay?" he said, applying the mixture to the open wounds on her arms and legs before carefully wrapping them in the cloth wraps. "There...they shouldn't get infected." he said, smiling at the girl. He stood up and stared at the tree for a few moments before looking back at Fleur "My name is Connor Tavarin, from a clan lost to an attack...what is your name?" he asks. For this first time in a long time, he wanted to make a friend. Connor quietly gave thanks to his family, wanting to believe they answered his message.

Fleur hissed defensively when the liquid hit the open cuts. She rubbed her arms after they had been wrpped with bandages. The bandage as soft, almost a soft as the dirty white dress she wore. "I don't know." She answered truthfully. Truly, she didn't know what her name was, she only went by a name she had read on the ruins. "I call myself Fleur..." She said, sitting up, her face dirty and all of the rest of her almost the same way. She saw something different in this man. Something that reminded her of herself.

Connor nodded "It's very nice to meet you, Fleur...if I had to guess you have no one to take care of you, huh? I'm without family, so I know how you must feel. If you have no one else, we can stick together." he said. She was a kindred spirit in the same situation. It warmed his heart to help her and decided from this day forward he would act as her older brother. He pulled out the fruit from his bag and used the tomahawk he uses to gather herbs and other supplies to cut it in half, giving her one half. "Here. Eat this. Don't worry, I've never hurt anyone with this so it's not dirty." he says as he takes a bite out of the other half.

A few moments later, a Naturan from the village sees the two and yells "Tavarin! You were supposed to be out gathering supplies! If you want to prove yourself to us you will get to work without delay! Go, or I'll tell the chief you have been slacking off!" he shouts before going back. Connor scowled and looked to the direction of the northern plains "There is not much we can do about their attitude towards us...but it's the only home we have. Come on, we'll go together." he said, heading north to the plains.

Fleur's ears perked up when she saw him offer the fruit that had fallen out of her hands. Her small pale hands went to grasp the fruit and they slightly touched Connor's hands. She took a small bite out of the fruit as she heard another's voice. It was almost instinct for her to run and hide behind the nearest person or thing, which just happened to be Conner. Her ears were flat against her head as she hid behind the new person named Connor. She noticed what she was doing and then backed up, beginning to eat the fruit, trying to act as if nothing happened.

When the male began to walk north, Fleur followed. He was different. Unlike all the other adults who would throw things at her, he actually helped her. She followed behind him, looking at her surroundings. They passed a river and other fruit trees until they came to the vacant bathing hole that the Naturan used.

As they came across the bathing hole, Connor set his bag down. "We should stop here for a few moments, Fleur. I don't mean offense, but you really must bathe. All of the dirt, leaves, and twigs can't stay on you forever." he said with a caring tone. "I'll get in too. So just turn around for a moment." Connor began removing his clothing and hung them on a branch before stepping into the water. "Alright, you can come in." he said.

Connor, even though most of his body was in the water, had visible scars. Bite and claw marks were seen on his shoulders, torso, and back. He earned these scars by surviving against his own people, serving as a permanent reminder of the people he had to kill just to keep living. Facing away from Fleur, Connor splashed some water on his face and through his hair.

Fleur looked at the man then turned as she was told. When she was told she could turn around, she did, looking at Connor in the water. She was hesitant. She had never done anything but drink from water. She didn't know that she could walk in the water. She walked to the edge of the pond, the water touching her foot. She yelped at the new feeling then backed away shaking her head. She was afraid of the new concept as her animal instinct told her to be.

Connor, concerned, turned to look at Fleur, who was still dressed "Have you...never bathed before, Fleur?" he said in disbelief. He couldn't help but laugh a little "It's not dangerous at all! It's good for you. If you don't feel comfortable getting in, at the very least take some water in your hands and clean your hair and face, like this." he said, cupping his hands in the water, splashing his face and running his fingers through his hair. "Quickly now, before someone else from the village decides to rush us." he said.

For the past few days, he and others have noticed a strange structure high in the sky. At first it confused and amazed them, but after the first day of it not doing anything, they went back to their daily routine. Still, Connor couldn't help but wonder what could be up there. Of course, the identity of the structure was the human ship, the Ambition, but no one on Neryas' surface knew that yet.

Fleur knelt beside the small pond and put her hand in the water. It felt weird, the slippery feeling on her hand. She pulled her hand back then sniffed at her hand, not smelling anything different. She licked her hand lightly and then looked back to Connor. She didn't understand the concept behind this whole bathing thing. She looked at the light brown dress that had once been white and then started to take the dress off, leaving the small girl naked as she slid her foot in the pond and slowly over a few minutes, she had made her way over to Connor. She was shivering at the feeling though and was scared to move, not used to the water.

Connor smiled "There you go. It's cold now but your body will get used to the water. We'll stay for a few minutes, but then we have to get going." he said as he started to wash up. He had faced away from her out of courtesy. It was strange, as earlier this morning he felt completely alone, but now he had someone to take care of. He never had a sibling, so this was new to him, but he did his best. He eventually turned around to show her how to wash her hair and get anything out of it. It was difficult as her hair was a mess and slightly knotted. After a while, he said "Alright, time to get out. See? It wasn't so bad." he said, heading to the tree branch he hung his clothes on and got dressed. He waited for Fleur to get dressed before they continued in the direction of the plains.

Meanwhile, a scout reported to the village chief back in Vistara, telling him about Connor and Fleur. The chief, a bear Naturan in his 30s, scoffed "So the weaklings stay together, hm? Typical of them. My father used to let anyone join this clan if they were strong, but he was blind. Certain Naturan are only good for labor. The strong Naturan are the wolves, the bears, the lions! Weak races like the squirrels and the rabbits have no chance to be part of our perfect warrior clan, though they are a good source of labor. However...if those two are together, the older one will be distracted from his work because he is taking care of her. That won't do. When the come back...separate them. They are not to interact." he said. The scout bowed and awaited the return of the two.

Fleur looked at Connor then slid the small dirty dress over herself and then stood beside Connor. She looked up at him and when he finished dressing, Fleur grabbed his hand. She looked at him and smiled lightly but then looked ahead waiting for them to begin moving. They walked out of the Grove of the Spirits and towards the clan's camp. They walked together, Connor talking to her and telling her stories as they walked. They were had no idea what was going to await them when they entered the camp.

As they walked inside, Connor stopped talking and kept aware of his surroundings. Fleur yelled when she was grabbed from behind and yanked from Connor, her small hand slipping out of his. The person holding her held her face and kept her from screaming again. Her long, wet black hair was all over and her ears were down in fear. The man holding Fleur spoke to Connor.

"You are to go on with your work and not have any contact with this one." He said, still holding Fleur. He pushed his bear like claw against the girl's face, drawing blood. "She'll be a good little rabbit and behave herself for the Chief."

(Continued from The Northern Plains.)

Connor was amused by Niala's tablet. He picked up a few key terms from it before Fleur decided to lead them to the Grove. It was a little close to the village, but hopefully the humans being there would deter the other Naturan. Alex thought it would be a good idea to survey the surroundings, so he decided to come with. Passing by the old elven ruins, they eventually reached the tree Connor frequently visits. He smiles and places his palm upon it. "Thank you, everyone..." he said, referencing his family. He leaped up to the top of the trees and picked a few of the fruits before jumping back down. He gave one to each of the people there, even Julius. Going back to Niala and Alex, he looks back at the tablet Niala always carries around with her, wondering what else it could do besides help teach language.

Alex looked around at the ruins "Well now, this is interesting. Looks almost like...gothic architecture? It's all in ruins though." he said. He examines the lettering on some of the walls "We should get the linguists down here at some point to take pictures and sketches of these runes." he suggested.

Fleur smiled as she helped gather more fruit for extra with Connor. Soon, in the shadows, Naturan warriors were armed and ready. They watched and Fleur sniffed the air feeling that something was wrong. She grabbed both Niala's hand and Connor's hand, pulling them close together. Something was wrong and it was apparent by Fleur's actions.

Niala frowned down at Fleur confused. She had been looking at the ruins, wondering if they would take her scaling them, when the younger girl had pulled her away. "What's wrong Fleur?" She asked, before the scanners on her tablet beeped at her. There were a whole bunch of warm bodies hidden in the shadows that her infrared sensors picked up. "Hey, Brullen? We got company again."

Alex nodded "Damn...looks like we're in their territory. Everyone, get ready for a fight, but let's make it non-lethal. Stun batons and tasers only." he said, putting on a pair of shock gloves. Connor looked around, uneasy. He had a feeling they were being brave because the humans weren't wearing armor. Alex raised an eyebrow as he got an idea "You know what? They have heightened hearing, right? I have an idea." he said. He looked at Connor and Fleur and covered his ears, then pointed at them before covering his ears again. "I'm going to see if there's a frequency that irritates them." he said to the team before toying with the frequency settings on the mic, setting it to vary between high frequency and low frequency. Sure enough, Connor begins to tremble slightly at the horrible noise which is well above human hearing. They heard thrashing amongst the trees as some of the foreign warriors began to retreat. The more burly and seasoned fighters stepped out, resisting the noise. They knew their cover was blown.

One of them looked at Connor once Alex turned the frequency down "You are not allowed on these grounds. Leave, or I will end you." he ordered. Connor stood his ground "Your leader is not a true chief. He's a racist coward who preys on who he perceives to be weak to cover for his own weakness." he said, spitting on the ground in front of the warrior. Alex looked over Connor's shoulder "I think things are about to get heated." he said. The bear, curious of this newcomer, walks up to him, easily four inches and a hundred pounds larger than Alex "What is earless elf you have befriended?" he said, speaking over Alex. Alex looks up "You. You don't talk over me." Alex then full-force kicks the bear in the groin and delivered a right haymaker to the nose, which causes the bear to crumple to the ground in pain. Alex brushes his hands off "And that's how you fight a bear! That's what the vids said right?" he said, looking over his shoulder. His unit was frozen in shock, staring at Alex. "No? Well screw you my way's better." he said, proud of himself, puffing out his chest. "Anyone else?" he challenges. The bear looks up from the ground "You fight with no honor..." he manages to say over the waves of pain coursing through his body. Connor couldn't help but laugh "More honor than you. Now go home and tell your chieftain to be ready. He's next." he warns. Alex pats him on the head "I have no idea what you said, but I like it."

(If anyone wants to volunteer to play the chieftain, let me know through PM or chat. I don't want the fight to basically be me fighting myself. Kind of awkward.)

"Yes Brullen, you are the prime example of diplomatic relations." Niala says sarcastically as she shakes her head, stepping away from where she had leapt to provide cover for Fleur. "And you should be glad that my aural implant doesn't connect to pain receptors else you would also have had me on the floor. As it is, Fleur, are you alright? Hurt?" She asked, crouching in front of the girl, who had not only been distressed by the presence of the other naturans, but Nia had also seen Connor's reaction to the sound and knew that the younger one was likely more susceptible. As she waited on the girl's reply she also addressed Brullen again. "I have a pretty good amount of data to start on the translation programs. I'll start getting things hooked up when we get back to camp."

Fleur rubbed her ears but nodded when the girl crouched to her. She couldn't hear just yet but she somehow understood. She wrapped her arms around the woman's neck, hugging her and letting her pick Fleur up. She was tiny and light so it didn't take much effort to lift her up. As they spoke on the way, returning to camp, Fleur had fallen asleep in Niala's arms. She trusted the woman now but that trust was fragile at best.

It didn't take long for Yelin to arrive at the Grove of Spirits, just outside of Vistara. When he arrived he got a strange feeling, either he was being overly cautious or his senses were trying to warn him that something odd had occurred here.
Nonetheless he walked deeper into the Grove and admired the elven structure of the place. This was where he felt the most connected to, although the Wood Elves were his family, and dear to him, he felt like something was missing and he could never shrug off that feeling. He despised the City Elves for abandoning him, but surely not all of them were that bad, he wasn't that quick to judge. Anyway, shrugging off these thoughts, he thought he might have just heard something strange and unfamiliar; the elf took in a deep breath, inhaling the scent around him. He knew this was where most Naturan went and that they were nearby, that wasn't an issue for him, the issue was he felt that there was some other smell in the air, something very unfamiliar, and Yelin was determined to find out the source of this smell and feeling.
