Physical Description:
Virana is typically seen in combat trousers and t shirts when off duty, with her hair tied in a messy ponytail. She has no obvious scars but she does have a scar on her chest. She is one of the guys in many ways and is not really feminine in that she rarely wears make up or worries about her appearance. On duty however she is always neat and tidy, though plain. Virana's irises are black which is the only obvious sign that she is a Betazoid.

General Overview:
Virana is a tough taskmaster and is known for being firm but fair whilst on duty, she works hard and expects the same of those around her. However she will never expect someone to do something she herself is not willing to do. She like most of her race is honest to the point of rudeness and does not understand lying or tact. She simply says it how it is always, she does however attempt to soften it somewhat when speaking to superior officers. She is generally an open and honest person who is easy to talk to, she will always make time to listen if someone needs a sounding board or simply a sympathetic ear. Though those who do go to her know that she will tell it to them straight. She is a competitive person who does not like losing and always wants to be the best at everything she does.

Strengths & Weaknesses:
Telepathy - This is one of Virana's natural racial abilities and does lend her an advantage at times. She is able to read most species though she cannot read Ferengi and certain other races. Her telepathy can also be a disadvantage however as she is prone to headaches due to 'background noise' and she can be incapacitated by psychic attack.
Empathy - Another racial ability and one that Virana uses without thought or concious effort. It is what makes her such a good friend/listener to those around her. However she struggles with it when around particularly strong emotion especially if a large group of people are all feeling the same. Even considering her age Virana has always struggled to get a handle on her empathy and as such she can be somewhat volatile and unpredictable mood wise though she does her best to not take it out on others where possible. Unfortunately she doesn't always manage this and has had various run ins with other crew and senior officers in her career.

History:
Born in 2362 to Tam and Rasha kalre it became apparent at an early age that Virana was not your typical Betazoid. Abilities wise she had the standard telepathy and Empathy both of average strength. Yet personality wise she was nothing like either of her parents or other Betazoids she had been around. Rather than the fun loving or calmness most others exhibited Virana was irritable and volatile and prone to dark moods and bouts of anger. This meant that she rarely kept friends as most were driven away by her unpredictable moods. Her parents originally believed it was her lack of control of her empathy that caused her behaviour and as such focussed a great deal of time and energy on fixing what they saw as a flaw in their daughter. But no matter how hard they and she tried she was never able to fully control her empathy or her volatile nature and eventually her parents gave up trying.

Things changed dramatically for Virana when her planet was invaded by the Dominion in 2374, for a year Betazed was controlled by the dominion and the people were subjugated. This changed Virana's whole outlook on life and she decided she hated being helpless and it was then her dream of joining starfleet was born. The war was eventually won and Betazed was liberated and her people struggled to return to life before the invasion but Virana found she could not go back to how life was before. The invasion had changed her as had the loss of her mother during the invasion and she was even more determined to achieve her goals. As soon as she was old enough Virana enrolled at starfleet academy. Her father disapproved of her choice as he feared she would lose her life as her mother did during the Dominion war. Virana went against his wishes and is currently estranged from her father.
