Enchanted Realm

Once upon a time, there was a King and Queen of an Enchanted Kingdom, they remained childless for many years. One day the Queen made a wish for a child, 'A daughter with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony.' As she made this wish, she accidentally pricked her finger with a needle, and three drops of blood fell onto snow, collecting on her windowsill. Months later, she gave birth to the long-wished-for daughter, and the Queen died in childbirth. The daughter was named Snow White, and she was the apple of her father's eye. Yet, he desired a mother figure for his beloved child. The King went out and sought a woman who could become his new Queen. When he finally returned, he came back with a beautiful woman whom he immediately married. Snow White is but a young child at this time and oblivious to the disdain this woman bore for the child.

The years went by, and Snow White grew older and remained unaware of her stepmother's true intentions. She was aware that her father became more and more distant from her as the years went by. It happened slowly, a gradual change that never truly made Snow White concerned but sad for losing their connection. When she turned eighteen, her stepmother suggested she go out with a local huntsman to the forest and bring wildflowers back as a gift. Eager at the chance to bridge the divide between them, Snow White accepted this. While out in the forest, the huntsman attacked her intending to murder her. This was the moment Snow White learned that her stepmother had ordered the huntsman to kill her. Fearful for her life, Snow White begged for mercy and that she would leave the Kingdom, never to return. The huntsman accepted this deal, and Snow White fled into the forest. She wandered lost through the forest for hours until, eventually, she was taken in by seven dwarves. In exchange for keeping her safe and providing a place to live, Snow White would cook and clean for them. She was terrible at it, being born a Princess and unused to such labor. But over time, she came to enjoy it, especially the cooking.

These content days were not to last. Her stepmother learned that Snow White was hiding with the dwarves and began to plot. There are several attempts on her life, and with each one, the dwarves came just in time to save her. With each failure, this just served to enrage the stepmother. Finally, the woman brought a bundle of apples to Snow White when the dwarves were away. The stepmother offered an apple, but Snow White hesitated, being wary after the various attempts on her life. But the stepmother was cunning, so she cut the apple in half so they could share. The exiled princess accepted this, falling into the trap as she took a bite out of the poisoned red half while the stepmother ate the safe white half.

Snow White fell to the ground instantly from the poison within the apple. Satisfied that her job was done, the stepmother returned to the palace. The dwarves returned and found her dead on the floor, unable to help her. Stricken with grief, they crafted a beautiful glass coffin and laid her to rest within. Sometime later, a prince traveled through and came across the princess. Overcome by her beauty, he requested that the coffin be carried to his castle where she could be laid to rest properly instead of in the woods. He left and hired a group of men to bring Snow White to him. Along the way, an accident resulted in the coffin falling and breaking, but this brought about a miracle. The force of the fall dislodged the piece of poisoned apple from Snow White's throat. With it leaving her body, she immediately revived and was very confused!

After finally arriving, Snow White stood before the Prince, who immediately requested her hand in marriage. Overwhelmed by the rush of everything and the trauma of being dead for a time, she hesitantly accepted this proposal. Yet again, things did not go well. On the eve of the wedding, she discovered that the Prince had contacted her stepmother to inform the woman that Snow White was alive. She had told the Prince the truth, but he'd gone behind her back. Upset by this betrayal, she called off the wedding. She had not expected his anger, but before their argument escalated, the curse washed over the land.

Real World

Eleanor believes she was born and raised in Essex. Her mother died in childbirth, but her father, Archie Reinhart, has always been there. In this world, there was never a loss of connection. Instead, he supported and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. She went through the local schools of Essex and went off to college to get her veterinary degree. When she was eighteen, her father did pass from illness, and it was quite heartbreaking for her. This period of time really taught her to focus on the joy of living rather than the dark times. She works at the Essex Animal Care Clinic and enjoys spending lunches at the Cedar Hill Diner.

There was a moment of disappointment that came over El as the music faded, and unfortunately, the dancing came to an end. Her cheeks were still flushed after being twirled across the dancefloor while she reached out to take the offered champagne glass. This evening was turning out rather well, definitely a nice break from her usually busy work schedule. She made her way towards the stage while sipping lightly at her drink.

At the mention that the winning bids were being placed, she couldn’t stop herself from glancing back towards the tables. An eagerness welled up within her, hoping that at least one of the bids she’d placed had won out. Especially for one particular item. Just that thought nearly brought her to start heading that way, but that would not be polite. So while she did shift impatiently, Ellie remained where she was. It was much harder to pay attention to what was being said, but specific phrases still stuck out.

“Dance, be merry, and enjoy each other. Tomorrow will mark a new beginning in Essex.” There was something in the way a ‘new beginning’ was said that brought an uneasiness within her. It didn’t sound ominous, but some gut instinct was stirring within. Maybe she was overreacting. Her head tilted down for but a moment, fingers drifting across the glass she held before she shook it off. Why allow such thoughts to mess with a wonderful evening?

With the speech over, she downed the champagne and set the glass aside. She resisted the urge to run, especially in her heels that might not end so well, but she did move rather quickly to the auction tables. It was not very pleasant to see that most of her bids did not come through; she would have loved to have the silver handheld mirror; it was so pretty. All that disappointment evaporated at the sight of the item she did get. A wide grin spread across her lips as she picked the object up and admired it fondly. This was worth every cent she spent on it, even if others may not see it that way.

Holding the item close, she turned partway to look around the room. It seemed that with the speech and auction closing, most people were choosing to take their leave. She would have loved one more dance to linger a bit longer. Oh well. As she turned to make her way to the exit, the young woman did see Dr. Fines heading towards the door. She hadn't even realized the good Doctor was here! "Hey, Doc-!" The words had barely passed her lips before he blasted past without even turning his head. How odd; Ellie hoped the man was okay. He was a dear friend after everything he'd done when her father had passed. Perhaps tomorrow, she would track him down and have lunch together.

Ellie made her way out the city hall's front doors with her prize cradled within the crook of one arm. Only to pause as she took in the scene outside. She came too late to see Grayson arresting Duval; the car had already driven off. But she did get a good view of Lorelei getting into Ricardo Trujillo's car. Her brows shot up with surprise at this turn of events. "Huh... Interesting." She wondered what would come of this, hopefully, nothing tragic. With another shake of her head, she glided down the stairs and made her way to her car. The best way she could think to end the night would be a glass of wine, a good book, a comfy chair, and eventually falling asleep.

The night seemed to grow more profound as the gathered assemblage left the Gala. A strong wind blew in, gathering up leaves and forcing the trees to lurch about. The tolling of a bell through the city heralded the arrival of midnight, and high in the heavens, clouds began to swallow the moonlight in darkness. Outside of the town, in the opposite direction of where Mrs. Pickett arrived, there was a small meadow where the shadows were long and deep. Within this area, a small sickly green light began to cast itself across the blades of grass. This light shone from tiny cracks that seemed to manifest from the very air itself. The cracks grew more prominent, deepening, and the light grew stronger, bathing the entire meadow in that eerie light. Suddenly a force broke through the cracks and shattered a hole through reality.

Through the crack came pale green orb, perfectly round without a single blemish, sat upon a staff of a black hardwood staff. A wave of black mist rolled out as the figure holding the staff stepped through the hole. The figure was tall, wearing long black robes that caught lightly in the wind, while two curved horns arched up from the figure’s head. There was a fluttering of wings, and through the rift came a large black raven narrowly avoiding the rift sealing itself shut. A clicking sound came as the bird landed upon the staff head, the noise coming from its talons meeting the hard orb surface. Maleficent, for indeed that was who this woman was, lifted one hand and gently ran a finger across the feathers of the raven’s head. "My sweet, fly through the town. Bring me news from far and wide. Go now, do not fail me." She crooned, letting a slow smirk curl one corner of her lips. Another flutter of wings and with a shrill ‘caw’ the raven took off into the night sky.

Quiet once more overtook the clearing, and Maleficent stood still, letting her vividly green eyes close. For a moment, nothing happened, but then her very form seemed to ripple bizarrely. The curved horns upon her head evaporated, leaving only her long black hair. Robes turned into a simple but elegant black dress, more fitting of this other realm, and her staff suddenly began to quiver within her hand. It shrank and twisted, bending until the staff became a ring adorning her left index hand.

With her more demonic visage tucked away, it was Manon Robillard who left the meadow and made the trek towards town. Such a strange sight, a beautiful woman in an elegant gown striding out of the woods and walking down the streets of Essex. Occasionally she would stop and gaze into the green gem upon the ring, seeking the faces of those who would need to be gathered this night and where they might be.

Trees. There were trees everywhere. Thick foliage blocked the view of the sky above, save for the few beams of light that were able to breakthrough. Undergrowth was everywhere, and Ellie found it challenging to move through this place. All around, brambles or bush twigs caught on the edges of her dress and wouldn’t allow her to pass. Taking a moment to breathe and look around, she realized that she was all alone out here… There was no one around. For some reason, this incited a level of panic within her.

In that instant, what little light in here seemed to fade away, and the trees began looming over her. It felt like they physically moved in closer to her, branches swaying down towards her with hands of twigs stretching for her. As darkness overcame this place, it appeared as if the very bark of the trees twisted into horrific faces that laughed at her. Terror welled upon within her, and she screamed in fear, turning to run and flee from the nightmare that was coming for her.

No thought was given to the brambles that tore at her dress. Sometimes it would be strips of black cloth ripped from her gown; in other moments, it was gold and blue.

But she kept running, instinct telling her that if she stopped, then she would be devoured by whatever darkness was trying to consume her. Ellie was starting to stumble, though, as it felt like instead of just the branches of the brambles, actual hands were grabbing onto her and dragging her down. She didn’t give up, striving forward as hard as she could and refusing to let the undergrowth overpower her. Up ahead, for just a brief moment, distant figures were passing through the trees. Hope blossomed wildly within her chest, and she fought all the more. “Help! Over here! Please, come help me!” El cried out, but no one came. “PLEASE!”

El was screaming herself hoarse, desperate for anyone to hear her and help. But still, no one came. She sank down into the grasping hands as hope faltered with the acknowledgment of how alone she was. But a surge of energy came flooding through her. Do not give up! Keep fighting!

Digging her feet into the ground, she tore free and ran in the direction she felt freedom was in. As if making a mockery of her, ten-fifteen ahead, she slammed right into an invisible wall. The breath was knocked out of her, and she was bounced back, losing her balance and hitting the ground. Pulling herself onto her knees, El reached out and felt the force in front of her. Not invisible… Glass… It was a glass wall. This realization made chills run through her, and she began banging her fists against it out of desperation. Her breaths were coming faster, and her heart was pounding in her ears. El knew she was panicking but couldn’t seem to stop herself. Some inner voice said that the walls were closing in, that if she didn’t break out, she never would. Bang. Bang. Bang. Again and again, but still, the glass held against her. The pressure was building against her chest; she couldn’t breathe. Oh god, she was being crushed. Ellie opened her mouth to cry out for help, but she couldn’t get any air to get her voice out. No, no, no!

A weary yawn escaped Lily’s mouth as she rubbed the back of her hand against one eye, trying to rub the tired out of it. She’d been driving for quite some time, and it was several hours past midnight by now. It felt like the road kept going on for miles, with trees endlessly passing by. Her car was packed to the brim with boxes and luggage, making looking through her rearview mirror a trial. The back seat was filled up with a large black and gray dog, whose head was resting against the console next to her chair. She could hear his whining, feeling his nose nudging her elbow. “Sorry, boy. We’ll be there soon, I promise.” She stretched a hand back blindly to rub at the dog’s head.

This turned out to be very accurate as after taking a long curve in the road, there was a large sign saying ‘Welcome to Essex,’ and up ahead, she could see the faint twinkling lights of the town. Immediately this brought a huge smile across her face; finally, she’d arrived! A strong urge went through her to drive through town until she saw her shop but decided against it. There would be time for that tomorrow. She had to admit that she was dead tired and needed to rest.

Winding through the streets, Lils used the map on her phone for directions to her new home. It was not far outside the town itself, just off of a lonely winding road tucked amongst a grouping of trees. She’d fallen in love with the cozy cottage the moment she’d seen the large rose bushes that framed the building. There was something about roses that called to the young woman; maybe it was the smell, their various shades, or perhaps just the look of them. She wasn’t quite sure, but certainly, she hadn’t been able to resist their call this time.

She parked the car next to the curb in a small driveway, letting out a soft sigh of relief as she opened the door and finally climbed out. She had to lean against the vehicle as her legs wobbled from having to sit for so long. “You ready, yeah? Let's go!” Lils grinned at her eager dog who’s tail was wagging a mile a minute. She swung the door open and watched him tear away out into the yard. Regulus was a well-trained dog, only a few years old, so he had tons of energy but knew he’d come running back when she called.

Walking up to the front door, Lils quickly unlocked and let herself into the cottage. The entryway led immediately into the living room, filled with her more significant pieces of furniture and boxes that wouldn’t fit in her car. She’d had them delivered ahead of her. She was a little intimated by all the work she’d have to do, especially knowing there would be even more work at the store. At that moment, she felt utterly exhausted; right now, she just needed to get some sleep than worry about the rest later. Lily turned and brought some of her things from her car, mainly some pillows.

“Reggie!” She stood at the doorway and gave a sharp whistle with two fingers, smiling as he came running right over after sniffing about in the foliage. “Good boy!”

She closed the door after he came in, pausing to give him some loving pets before heading towards the couch. There were far fewer boxes piled on it than her bed frame, so for tonight, she’d clear it off and curl up on it. The moment she flopped over onto the couch, she pulled a pillow beneath her head and let herself conk out.

Still closely embraced from their dance, Paisley rested her head near the crook of John's neck. John leaned into her as well, a slight smile widening on his face as he looked down towards the crown of her head.

The two had grown close since the time they met each other but their interactions had remained platonic due to John's already existing relationship with Nora and the complications surrounding his still lingering feelings towards his late wife. He didn't want to further complicate his love life but tonight showed that there was some romantic tension between the two, if just a little.

His thoughts were soon interrupted when Paisley said, "Ah, I almost forgot, but I promised to take the kids to the lake for a picnic. Think it will be okay if I drop by and pick them up at noon?" John didn't give it much thought before nodding in agreement. He trusted Paisley with his children and the two seemed to like her. Nothing bad should occur with her watching over them.

"That should work and I'm sure the kids are looking forward to it. Anything to breakup what they perceive to be a boring small town life. I'll swing by if I'm able." John chuckled under his breath, knowing he probably wouldn't be able, before their conversation was interrupted by a waiter holding a tray of filled champagne glasses. He took one for himself and handed another one towards Paisley before the room's attention was grabbed by the host of the evening, Mrs. Pickett.

Her speech focused on the silent auction and how the items would be marked for the item's respective owners as well as a short message about where the funds would be allocated. Mrs. Pickett than gave a short message about hope and some 'new beginning' that would occur. John didn't quite understand the meaning behind her message but he believed there was something more to what she said.

"A new beginning? So strange . . . Was there news that I missed?" John shrugged slightly in response, not having a definitive answer for Paisley. Whatever this 'new beginning' was exactly, John hoped that it would be a beginning that would be positive for him and his children.

He answered as much to Paisley when he said, "Probably but if it's something you've missed I'm pretty sure you're not the only one." John motioned towards all the other confused people in the gala hall. He then continued saying, "Whatever this 'new beginning' is, hopefully it's a peaceful one. Don't want to imagine the countless bad possibilities there could be . . . Maybe you could write a novel based on a horrible possibility like a zombie apocalypse for instance. Apocalyptic and dystopic scenarios seem to be popular lately."

Pulling out the card he was given earlier in the evening John motioned his head towards the items before saying to Paisley, "I'll go see if I won anything tonight. Would be a pretty bad dad if I wasn't able to bring anything back for the kids." He then began to walk towards the auction items before waving goodbye to Paisley and continuing, "Don't be a stranger. I'll see you tomorrow if not later today. Goodnight."

With his card in hand John walked by the first item he placed a bid on tonight, a silver ring with a stag's head, and saw that he had successfully purchased it. John was delighted and planned to wrap a thin cord around it and make a necklace with the ring and give it to his daughter. John then walked towards the old hunting knife and saw that he was also successful at acquiring it. When he grabbed the knife's scabbard he felt a small shock creep up his arm. It wasn't painful but it was noticeable, John shrugged it off however not thinking much of it.

While walking towards an exit of the gala hall John was looking down at his phone, looking for any messages that he may have received. Strangely there wasn't anything, no message from Nora and he didn't see her attending tonight either. Perhaps she was occupied with something else and was unable to contact him. What she would've been busy with he had no idea but he decided to just send her a short message, hoping that she was alright.

Shortly afterwards John found himself outside and an unwilling spectator of a scene occurring between Mr. Duval and Mr. Trujillo. John had noticed some tension between the two earlier in the evening, especially when Ricardo was dancing with Lorelei but he didn't think it would escalate into anything serious. John was uncharacteristically wrong about that.

During the commotion John had wanted to step in several times to try and diffuse the situation but from what he could observe from the sidelines he knew that it wouldn't have ended well for him or them if he had. However when Adrien had taken out a firearm, John placed his hand on his gun holster incase Adrien was stupid enough to actually attempt anything. Luckily for him and everyone surrounding him Grayson was able to deescalate the situation and apprehended Mr. Duval, a decision Grayson may soon regret.

Not wanting to end the night on a sour note John walked towards the nearest group to him, Liesl and Hugo, to see how they were faring after the incident. Without knowledge of their previous conversation John walked in-between the two and said, "Not how I would choose to end a night of festivities but the wealthy and powerful sure know how to spice up a party."

John then turned towards Liesl and said, "Apologies for not being able to talk to you earlier. I was already preoccupied but it seems you were able to find someone else to 'entertain' you." He then smiled at Hugo but he felt that he wasn't going to receive a warm welcome from him. He then continued saying, "You didn't look yourself a little earlier tonight. Anything you wanted to talk about or were you looking forward to leaving here as soon as humanly possible?"
