Description

'Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood.'
-George S. Patton

Satoru, since he's not entirely Japanese, appears to be incredibly tall. He's practically a giant in Japan, even for a guy, and to be honest, he's a bit heavier for a regular guy too, but not for the reason you're thinking. Satoru is very fit and in shape, having many built muscles, abs, and etc. 'How? Why?' you may ask, but it should be obvious that Satoru is a swimmer, and a runner. Well, not quite a professional runner, but definitely a swimmer. He tends to run often to strengthen his muscles for swimming, and in order to be good at swimming and running, he has to be strong and fit, which is exactly what he is. All that extra weight is from muscle, not fat.

Satoru was born with a sort of brownish colored hair at first, but over time it began to turn sort of red. Why it became red colored is unknown, but it didn't seem to bother him or the rest of his family. It just happened naturally, and he didn't worry about it, neither did anyone else. His eyes were pretty much the same way, except that they're actually brown, but sometimes look like shades of red. Satoru's choice of clothing looks pretty much the same everyday. He wears red, beige, and black most of the time, and it's usually tank tops with short/loose pants with a jacket if it's cold. He doesn't care much for what he wears, but even so, it doesn't look horrible on him.

'Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us.'
-Jane Austen

โœฆ Competitive โœง Prideful โœฆ Naive โœง Tolerant โœฆ

It's a very obvious trait of his that everyone realizes; Satoru is very competitive. He enjoys winning, or more like, he feels the need to win. Of course, Satoru isn't obnoxiously competitive, as he will let some people win for fun in minor races or challenges that he doesn't find very important, but if it comes to something like swimming for real or going into a competition of some sort with his past rivals (or any rival, for that matter), Satoru won't hold bad in the slightest. He knows losing is a way to gain experience, but to win is to know that all that loss has been put to some sort of good. Winning will also get him to his dream one day, so he feels he cannot afford to lose.

Satoru also has a lot of pride. He likes to live up to his own standard, and sometimes even the standards of others, although it's not all the time. The pressure can sometimes be too much, so it's often only living up to what he feels right rather than what others feel right. He likes to keep his pride, which is another reason why he only accepts his own standards, so if he disappoints others, he'll have an excuse. Losing his pride is sometimes a consequence for his ambition and need to win, which can damage him sometimes.

However, Satoru is, unfortunately, very naive. He's sometimes clueless to some jokes, to people teasing him, and especially to girls hitting on him, which has happened a few times in the past before. He doesn't deal well with girls, actually, when they try to make a move, or confess to him, he's always confused, and if he does end up getting it, he's very... well... dumbfounded, and even more confused. He has the innocence of a child, basically.

Satoru's tolerance actually comes from his two younger brothers, Dai and Jean, bothering him all day. For the first few years, Satoru was very annoyed with the both of them, but now he's gotten used to their hyper and childish personality which grants him the same amount of tolerance with others. Well, not the same amount, perhaps, but enough tolerance, you could say. He'll still be annoyed and irritated, of course, but he won't yell or anything because he's used to it just like with his brothers, therefore, he doesn't yell or shout very often.

๏ผฌ๏ผฉ๏ผซ๏ผฅ๏ผณ
โœฆSwimming - "My dad did it, and now I'm taking after him." Satoru's dad used to be a swimmer, eventually became a coach, but died before he could participate in the olympics. Now, Satoru proceeds to carry on his dad's dream on his shoulders.
โœงDogs - "I like how much energy they have. They really are a man's best friend." Satoru only had one dog in his life that he, himself, named Desert, because it was constantly hot and was the color of sand, when he was nine. It now lives with his mother in Australia.
โœฆWinning - "I believe losing lets you gain experience, but the relief of winning and that superior feeling is just superb." Satoru plans to be an olympic swimmer in his future. Losing, at that point, won't become an option.
โœงRunning - "I've got to be in shape to swim, obviously. Besides, it kind of relieves whatever stress I'm carrying." Whenever he runs, it's usually in the evening or early morning. Back in the day, he used to run/train with Hiroko.
โœฆMeat - "Um... Is there even a way to explain this?" Yeah, Satoru isn't a vegetarian.

ImageImage
๏ผค๏ผฉ๏ผณ๏ผฌ๏ผฉ๏ผซ๏ผฅ๏ผณ
โœฆWinter - "For various reasons too..." Satoru has trouble stretching in winter and also has a tendency to become a bit more sluggish, oddly.
โœงSweets - "I don't get why people like it? They're disgusting." Spicy or sour are entirely fine with him, but sweets make him feel sick, and this means any sweet from a tiny candy to cake.
โœฆLosing - "I can't lose to anyone..." Well, there are some exceptions. He's not always about winning every single thing he's challenge too (especially if it's against a friend or if it's just friendly competition).
โœงPressure - "I don't like it when people set standards for me and then remind me to keep up to it. It's annoying." Pressure does make Satoru somewhat nervous at times, but if anything, he just finds it obnoxious.
โœฆReading - "Ugh... So many words, and I have better things to do than to take my time to understand all these words." He doesn't like it because he's unable to read Japanese as fluently as before since he's so used to speaking english and reading english lately./center]

โœฆSwimming - "Really? I have to explain this?" It's too obvious. There shouldn't even be an explanation for this.
โœงRunning - "This shouldn't need to be explained either..." ...
โœฆLying - "I don't know... I don't lie very often, but when I do, no one seems to notice until I tell them." Satoru is an honest person, but when he does lie, he makes it so believable that no one gets it until they really think about it. Sometimes they never figure it out at all.
โœงMultitasking - "I've learned to watch TV while weight lifting also while eating dinner. Don't ask how." Satoru has begun to learn to multitask the strangest combinations, but it works, regardless, so he isn't complaining. How he learns is unknown, but he certainly doesn't practice it. That'd be strange.
โœฆCooking - "Mom isn't a good chef, so I eventually found my way with the different flavors." He might not be professional, but his cooking is good enough to eat, and it's much better than his mom's. He's a bit picky about the quality of food he eats and prefers to cook over instant food.

๏ผฆ๏ผฌ๏ผก๏ผท๏ผณ
โœฆCompetitive - "I'm not sorry. I'm in it to win." It really only comes with his sport, swimming, and those he shares rivalries with. It ruins his pride if he loses.
โœงImpulsive - "Not all the time, but I'll admit that I tend to act before I think." Just as he says, Satoru is a bit impulsive, only sometimes, but when he is, it tends to be during the worst situations.
โœฆDishonest - "I don't call it lying though... I just call it... avoiding the truth." Satoru is truly an honest person. However, he has a habit of avoiding certain questions and only explains part of the truth instead.
โœงSomewhat Awkward - "It's kind of hard for me to get along with people, what else am I supposed to say?" Satoru doesn't engage in conversations with strangers and tends to keep to himself instead. This is obviously not the case with his friends, but it's hard for him to make new friends.
โœฆSwitches Primary Language - "Half of my life in Japan, and the other half in Australia. I don't know which language to use." Satoru now has a habit of speaking english in Japan because the last place he's lived in is Australia, and other times, he'll switch back to Japanese, but it's unpredictable.

๏ผฆ๏ผฅ๏ผก๏ผฒ๏ผณ
โœฆLosing - "I-I can't fail my dad..." Losing isn't only something he doesn't like, but he's afraid of coming so far just to lose it all from one tiny mistake and disappointing his dad.
โœงDisappointing Others - "It doesn't apply to everyone though." Satoru doesn't mind disappointing people he doesn't like (he'll try to disappoint them actually) but disappointing his friends and his family is simply unacceptable.
โœฆGetting Injured - "This will ruin the years I've spent of my life practicing for the olympics." An injury means dropping his dad's dream and his own dream to go into the olympics. He's careful about getting injuries, but he's also very keen on pushing himself to the limit.
โœงThe Dark - "I-I'm not! I swear!" Yes, yes he is. Satoru doesn't do well in the dark, but this is only when he's alone. He feels safer when someone else is in the room with him. Unless it's a ghost. Or a demon. Or a robber.
โœฆFire - "I cook, but that sort of fire is fine. I don't really like bonfires or holding those small fireworks." Satoru is very cautious with uncontrollable fire, especially with fireworks. He'll usually stand in the back and watch everyone since he doesn't want to get close to the sparks.

'Commitment is a big part of what I am and what I believe. How committed are you to winning? How committed are you to being a good friend? To being trustworthy? To being successful? How committed are you to being a good father, a good teammate, a good role model? There's that moment every morning when you look in the mirror: Are you committed, or are you not?'
-LeBron James

๏ผข๏ผฉ๏ผฏ
Ever since Satoru started swimming, he wanted to be like his dad. No... not since he began swimming, it was before that... Satoru always adored his father who would swim constantly. He was fit, even for a man his age, and he wanted to become an olympic swimmer. Satoru's brother, Dai, who is two years younger than him, had no interest in it, but looked up to his older brother, and helped him and his dad pursue their goals of swimming. Satoru definitely didn't think he'd be interested in the olympic, but he loved how his dad would swim, and look after him. However, this dream and happiness did not last long, and neither did their father's life.

They didn't understand how their father could die from a heart attack. He wasn't unhealthy at all. Satoru and Dai were unable to hear the news that their always smiling mother bore, and to this day, neither of them understand why their dad died from a heart attack, and neither have an wanting to know how. It took at least a year for them to recover. Satoru hadn't even thought about swimming since his death, and Dai wasn't feeling any better. They were going to stay in denial and in depression for another year if their mother hadn't slapped some sense into them both. Their mother had a long talk with them, asking them if their father would want them to be depressed and sorry for the rest of their lives. Satoru and Dai then realized how strong their mother was on the inside.

They changed after that day, slowly, but surely. Satoru began to get back into his swimming habits, and his brother even decided to join him. People began to realize Satoru's potential, and even his mother and brother encouraged him to take after his dad's dream. Satoru didn't think it was possible, but he began to accept his talent and moved away from Japan to Australia, leaving his friends behind, to train at a professional swimming school with a professional swimming coach. He's miss them all, but he wanted to fulfill what his father could not with the limited amount of time he had left.

He trained and practiced hard there, and grew up there. He also got another brother who was adoptive, Jean Cornette, slightly more annoying than the first one, but in the end, Satoru accepted him as family as well. Satoru dedicated most of his years in Australia to simply swimming and running, working towards his and his father's dream. His mother saw that he began to overwork himself, therefore leading her to bring up moving
back to Japan for the summer, and surprisingly, he agreed to, but he wasn't
expecting to see old friends there.

Satoru looked at the shining, crystal clear blue pool with some sort of twinkle in his eyes. Swimming always fascinated him, ever since he was a child. It started with his father, and after he died, along with his dream to become an olympic swimmer, Satoru carried on all that he ever wanted before passing away. He worked hard for so long, and now was that time where if he won, he'd move on, and maybe, just one day, he'd make it into the Olympics and complete his father's dream.

It was still two hours away from his competition, and he didn't want to stress his mind or tire his muscles by extreme practice before. The seats, bleachers, chairs- they were all empty, waiting to be filled with the audience who would watch him, and various other people, compete in a huge swimming race.

Satoru got a call from his mom a day before though. She said something about a few friends coming to watch him? She left a voicemail since he wasn't there to pick up the phone, and he forgot to call her back about it. "Wonder who they could be..." Satoru murmured to himself and then checked his watch. It was 1:32 on his watch, and they were apparently supposed to have met him before the competition at 1:30 sharp, but no one was where yet.

He looked around, still finding no traces of anyone, and said to himself, "Maybe it was just a prank of some sort... To calm my mind maybe." He considered going home, but stopped and waited for a few more minutes, just incase these mysterious friends of his were to actually show up...

Everything... it just seemed so.. different. It was actually a little bit scary, terrifying. But here she was, lost and without her brother, struggling with her English just from the nerves alone. She had been in Russia, leading her to almost forget Japanese, just as easily. It was Russian, day in and day out, mixed with English when it came with the exchange students.

Following the signs, Ryu had promised to meet her by the next biggest event- the swim competition...

These things brought back some mixed emotions, mixed memories. Some of them were simply blurred passed the lines, shoved into a dark closet somewhere to feed her loneliness when it was time to dance and perform. But now? Now she was doubting if her dreams were all that important. At all, really.

Ryu told her not to give up, but what was the point of doing something that didn't make a person happy? Or bring excitement into her life? She just... didn't know.

But remembering the days she was so excited to jump around the room, spin and twirl, it pushed away those silly memories, those silly doubts. It in fact made her want to prove herself wrong, to think of the next big dance. A deep breathe of air, she could just smell the chlorine, the fresh air.

Right! It was time to start being serious about the vacation! Inspiration was everywhere, she just needed to look for it! 'Now I wonder where...' Looking around, Hiro was quick to suddenly spot someone. She froze, heartbeat nearly stopping dead in it's tracks.

Oh that son of a bitch! He had purposely lost her! This must of been a set up! "Excuse me?" Hiroko called out, although she was a bit reluctant as she drew closer. He seemed... so... familiar.

    It couldn't be, could it?

Of course not! He was busy elsewhere, and besides, it had been years since they last saw each other. But if it was, would that mean they would show up too?

"Tch." Satoru's eyes lured towards the ground. 'I knew it was just a prank. God, she thinks I need a few imaginary friends to help calm myself before a competition? That's stupid,' he thought to himself. A frown crossed his face, but he had to admit he was a bit disappointed. What was he so excited about? Did he expect to see people he knew? His mom was the type of person to something like that to help him after all...

Just as he turned to leave, he heard a voice. "Excuse me?"

Who was that? Why was that voice so damn familiar to his ears? Satoru had the urge to turn around, but at the same time, he didn't. Maybe it was just his imagination, because that almost sounded like that close friend of his from a long, long time ago. After a while of just standing there, wondering if he should continue walking or not, he turned around and found him facing just who he suspected - Hiroko Minamoto. "Hiro...?" Satoru accidentally murmured her nickname under his breath. His voice held new emotions that were lost when they had separated: surprised, amazement, and even... a bit of plain happiness? That expression he held on his face he probably wouldn't even recognize if he looked in a mirror. 'No... no it can't be. She just... she just looks like her, right?'

"Hiroko... Miyamoto?" Satoru took a few steps closer to her, as if he needed to see her up close in order to make sure he was right. He didn't want to go smiling and opening his arms to a stranger. That'd be unusual. Would he do that with her in the first place? It flustered him a bit to think of it and quickly washed the thought away.

Then, from somewhere up in the stands, a single pair of hands would be heard, clapping with a very unenthusiastic whistle. "Get a room you two."

Akira sat in the stands above the two below, leg crossed over the other, as usual, crossing her arms. There was that usual face she'd wear, that apathetic and uninterested look as her eyes observed the two below. How long she was waiting up there for someone, anyone to notice her was a mystery.

Well, at least she got to have her fun, even if it took a while and lasted only moments.

Knowing that brought a small smirk on her face, which drove Satoru mad. He knew that look on her face. His face grew slightly red from her comment and he yelled up at her, "Where the hell were you that whole time! I was gonna leave!"

"Hello to you too." Akira rolled her eyes and waved over to her good friend Hiroko. She hadn't forgotten her of course. Everyone at those other schools were lying stereotypes, so there was no way she'd forget her true friends.
