a character in “Subject 11”, as played by Marine3950

Description

Name: Emma Rayler
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Born: Full born
Kind/Race: Contacted

Personality

Weakness: Two men are in critical condition today after they say a mutant used two swords to attack them... When asked why she did so, one of the two responded "...We talked smack about her parents... and she just lost it...." Authorities are still looking for the mutant.
News cast
Strong points: Emma is always calm and level-headed in a fight. Part of our recruitment process used to be having would-be recruits face her hand-to-hand. Had to last five full minutes against her. 50% made it through. Of those who didn't, 40% ended up with broken bones.
Personality:Emma is either a very kind and caring individual, who gives her all in any given task, or a trained and ruthless killing machine. It all depends on who you talk to.
Psych Report
Fears: Losing her rings, as they are all she has left of her parents.

Equipment

Special Item: ...Emma's most prized possesions are two rings, one given to her by each of her parents. According to her, her dad gave her the one she wears on her right ring finger, a golden band with a brilliant saphire. Her mother gave her a similar band embedded with a ruby, which she wears on the opposite ring finger. When the stones are touched, they flash white hot. The next second, two short swords, one with an azure blade, the other blood red, are in her hands, the rings nowhere to be found. The blades are three feet long. The pommel of each sword has another gemstone embedded in it. When they touch, they flash, and the swords vanish, the rings back on her hands.
Analysis, paragraph 13, sentences two through nine
Job: Security
Skills: Hand-To-Hand Combat, Leadership

History

Background story:Emma didn't really talk about her personal life. From what I managed to get out of her, her parents died in a mutant uprising. Her parents were upstanding citizens, and they raised her daughter right. She didn't even know she was a mutant until she was 18. Her parents died, the will left her everything. The next day she was clearing out their things when she found a small box. Inside, two rings and a letter adressed to her. The letter explained everything to her. She took the rings, learned how to use them. Two years later, she came to us and signed up. We didn't know she was a mutant until someone saw her actually transform those rings. All that time, she never gave us any trouble.

Other: Emma harbors resentment for other mutants. She views them as the reason her parents are dead.

So begins...

Emma stood there shocked for a split second. Mayu, despite being seriously injured, had just attempted to do Emma, the person who had saved her, harm. She snapped out of her shock when the gun clattered on the floor. "I am aware that there are some mutants working as staff members in this lab... I even used a few of them sometimes to make the fights mutants have more amusing... But those mutants are also locked up until the staff needs them. Why are you walking around freely?!" Emma was stunned again. She recovered. "I am not locked up because A, I transfered here from another facility, B, my parents were both highly respected, and C, anyone who tried to grab me found themselves flat on their butt with my bootprint in their stomach." Emma walked over to Mayu, knelt down to her level, and looked her dead in the eye. "I am not a monster, Mayu. I'm a person trying to live with the knowledge that there are billions of people in the world trying to kill me. There are mutants in the world who deserve that fate and fates far worse. I'm not one of them." Emma gently put Mayu's gun arm around her shoulder, and picked Mayu up off the floor. Emma walked back to Mayu's bed, Mayu in tow. Emma sat Mayu down on the bed. Turning to Carling, Emma said "Doc, She needs painkillers and rest. She'll need both if she's gonna lead a team to capture the runaways."

The motorcycle had run out of gas. Mitch and Andrew had walked aimlessly for a while. They had stopped for another break when Andrew saw someone in the distance. The pair walked over as the temperature dropped. They reached her as she fell asleep. Mitch shook her gently. "Hey." He whispered. "Hey wake up."

Andrew walked over to the sitting form of the girl. Crouching down next to her, Andrew said, "Hey, don't worry. He brought me here, away from the lab. He's here to help. If you won't trust him, trust me." Andrew turned to Mitch. "You turned off your bike's tracker, right?" Mitch nodded. "We were never transmitting. Mayu will have to track us manually." Andrew turned back to the girl. "Don't worry. I'll protect you." Andrew put his hand on the girl's shoulder.

Mitch took the opportunity to remove any distinguishing marks on the armor. He removed the armor, leaving the work shirt and shorts on. Grabbing his knife, Mitch scraped away the call number, rank symbols, and anything else that a guard might use to distinguish him at a glance. After he was done, he grabbed his backpack and pulled out a bottle of water. Instead of drinking it, he walked over to the girl Andrew was comforting. "Take it."

Emma had already organized the search force. They would take two hours to set out, but that was two hours too many. Emma knew Mayu wanted the mutants back. Emma intended to oblige her. Grabbing an anti-mutation pistol, Emma walked into the garage. Mayu was already there, trying her luck at a car. Emma walked over to her, grabbing two helmets on her way. She put one on, carrying the other. Emma lowered the visor and checked the time. The first team would be sent out in about 15 minutes. Calmly, Emma spoke to Mayu. "Mayu, search teams will start heading out in fifteen minutes. If you want to be at the head of the pack, I suggest you take these." Emma grabbed the pistol and offered it and the helmet to Mayu.

"Let's go and search for those... The test subjects." Emma nodded, and flipped to the global channel. "Anything?" Most of the teams responded in the negative, including the airborne one, but the last team to report, team ten, said they found something. "It looks like one of our guards' bikes. Someone went out, but we don't have any record of a guard clocking out recently. Must've run out when no one was looking." Emma frowned. "Transmitter should've told us that the guard left. Was it turned off?"

There was silence on the line for a moment, then "Yes, the bike's transmitter is off." Emma's frown deepened. The guard would have no reason to turn the transmitter off unless he or she wanted to hide. "Check the bike's registry and get back to me on it. Until then, give me coordinates." The guard on the other end signed off. After a moment, coordinates appeared on Emma's helmet visor. Emma turned to Mayu.

"Team found a bike belonging to one of our guards. I have coordinates. Follow me." Emma pulled up a map of the island, and overlayed the route to the coordinates. She gunned her bike's motor, and raced off towards the spot.

Emma grimaced behind her helmet. "Mayu, smoking them out may not work. If it doesn't our guards on the ground will have a hard time having to round them up. Our best bet, unfortunately, would be to go in on foot immediately. Unfortunate because they probably went there because one or more of them know the area well." Emma paused as she considered the different outcomes. "If we are going to do this, we need to be smart about it." Emma got on the radio. "Before entering the forest, I expect you to have double-checked your gear, and found your squad. Remember, we need to be fast, not hasty."

Turning to Mayu, Emma took a deep breath. "You and I are going in together." Emma revved the engine on your bike. "We are going to need to move fast, so keep up." Turning in the direction of the forest, Emma gunned the motor on her bike, and rushed off in the direction of the forest.

"Really, it's nothing. I'm just thinking about my abilities, that's all." Sam nodded. "Knowledge is power, I suppose. Know your limits, and you won't need to worry about hurting yourself when you need your powers." Sam shook his head. "Psions like me have it worst, though. So many different abilities, endless as the imagination. I mean, a psion has the ability to release a massive amount of psychic energy in a single, concentrated blast, but if it isn't channeled right, you end up one of the victims." Sam shook his head. "That's why I chose manifestation." Sam formed a small, glowing purple ball, and threw it onto the ground. It bounced off the floor, then off the ceiling, and finally dissipated just as it hit the floor again. "I can make anything, provided it isn't too complex." Sam smiled. "Enough about my powers, though. What's your power?"

"Are you ready?" Emma's answer was simple. She parked her bike, jumped off, and touched the two rings together. They flashed, and the swords appeared in her hands. Emma nodded, then set off into the forest. She hadn't gone far, however, before she ran into the ugliest wild dog she had ever seen. It was like someone had gotten their sick kicks mutating it. The thing turned at her, and snarled.
* * *
Andrew had been exploring the forest when he had heard two motors approach. He had decided to greet the arrivals, but was instead greeted with a guard brandishing twin swords. He figured that his current form would be more than capable of beating the guard. He uttered a simple warning snarl, and pawed at the ground. Whoever the guard was, he was clearly interested in a fight.
* * *
Emma made the first move. In one swift motion, the sword in her left hand flew towards the creature, the sword in her right moving to her left. She charged the thing, smirking as the sword closed distance. The smirk faded, however, when the thrown sword impacted it's target. Her weapon bounced off of the thing's neck with an odd thunk. The thing reacted to the impact by charging her.
* * *
Andrew watched as the guard threw his sword at him. If his current form could smile, he would've. He felt the impact of the weapon, but he knew that it did nothing. Andrew charged at his opponent, aiming for the head.

Andrew's attack followed through, and he felt two different impacts: his impact with Emma, and the impact of a bullet against him. He felt his form's carapace harden in response, but Emma was sent reeling. Andrew turned to face the new attacker. It was Mayu. Seeing Mayu sent Andrew into a frenzy. There was no warning. Andrew simply charged Mayu.
* * *
Emma felt the impact of the mutant against her. The planned bite had been interrupted by Mayu's intervention, but Emma had still taken the brunt of the impact. Dazed, Emma followed the mutant's charge at Mayu. Emma lobbed her other sword to Mayu, and dashed over to the sword she had thrown at the mutant. "Mayu! Catch!"

Andrew looked at Mayu. The grin she was sporting genuinely scared him. Andrew looked around, hoping to find something that would prove to be advantageous. That was when he saw Mitch. He was in a tree aiming his gun at Mayu, peering down its scope. Andrew turned to Emma, and charged again. At the same time, a hiss of compressed air came from Mitch's gun, and a small, silver dart flew towards Mayu.
* * *
Mitch had been following Andrew while he hunted. He had seen the fight, and spent that time preparing a set of potent anesthetic darts. Finally, with Andrew cornered, Mitch had finished the darts, and loaded his rifle. He found his target, Mayu's lower back. He fired.
* * *
Emma saw the mutant charge her. She had heard Mayu refer to it as Subject 22. She racked her brain for information. Shapeshifter, forms, heightened senses... Emma saw it bearing down on her. She screamed.
* * *
Andrew stopped dead in his tracks. A high-pitched scream escaped from Emma's lips, and Andrew felt a splitting pain in his head. It was debilitating, utterly paralyzing. He clawed at his ear holes, desperate to escape the shill noise.

Mitch swore. The dart hit, he was sure of it. So why hadn't it injected her with the anesthetic? Mayu should've been out cold. His train of thought stopped when Emma screamed. She did her research. Mitch attached a bayonet to the end of his rifle, then dropped himself thirty feet to the ground, loading a new round on the way down. Mitch landed, went down to a knee, and squeezed the trigger. The dart flew towards Emma, and he loaded a new round.
-
Emma had stopped screaming and caught the sword when Mayu threw it. Emma turned to the beast that had charged her. It was still reeling in pain from the scream. Emma took the opportunity to disable it. She raised one of her swords... and felt a sharp pain in her stomach as the injector needle impaled her. She dropped the sword. Everything was spinning, pulsing as the images swam in front of her. Then, blackness.
-
Andrew shook himself, clearing his head. Emma was down, Mitch had made sure of that. Andrew looked around. Something wasn't right...

The blast took him completely by surprise. It was a split second, but that was all it took. A high-pitched sound wave, too high for human hearing, but in the golden zone for his. His vision went black, and he collapsed.
-
Mitch saw Emma go down. Then he saw Andrew go down. Then he saw two men and a woman in full combat armor walk out from the foliage. Their armor was black, the visors deep blue. One of the men had a big red cross painted onto his chest and shoulders, and he ran right over to the downed form of Emma. The other man held what Mitch thought was an over-sized boom-box. He figured that was what brought Andrew down.

The girl held a fully automatic, military issue Special Operations variant M-16B model. Longer barrel for accuracy, specialist scope for all-weather function, chambering a powerful 6.8mm round. Pointed right at him. Mitch slowly crouched down, set the gun on he forest floor, then started backing away. "Stop." The girl moved down to the scope. Mitch complied. Then, the medic spoke up. "She's fine. She'll be out of it for a bit, but she'll be fine." The girl grunted in acknowledgement. "You O.K. Mayu?"

Emma woke up with what felt to her like the world's worst hangover. Her head was screaming, her vision was blurred. She groaned. Everything ached. She looked at her hands. The rings weren't there. She started to panic. Where were they? She looked around. Her swords were laying right next to the bed, blades crossed. Emma sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She stood, a little uneasy, and bent down to pick up the weapons.

She touched the gems together, and her vision flashed. If she weren't used to the flash, she would've thought that she was blacking out. The light subsided, and her rings rested in her hands. Oddly enough, there was an added piece to the rings: each ring had a new, smaller gem set onto the opposite side of the ring. Both were a purple amethyst. She sat down on the bed. Curious, she touched the two new gems together. Her vision flashed.

When her vision came back, resting in her hands was a single sword. The blade reflected a brilliant purple glow, and a fairly large amethyst was set into the pommel, but both rings were gone, so she had no way of restoring her rings. She stood up, and a purple gem fell from her leg. She scooped it up. Unsure, she touched it to the pommel, and her vision flashed. When it came back, both rings had returned, and the new gem was still present. She dug into her pocket, pulling out a plain metal chain. It had an open socketed attachment on it that looked big enough to fit the gem. Emma fit the gem into the socket, which fit the gem perfectly. Emma put the necklace and rings on, and took a moment to better scan her surroundings.

She was inside of a tent. She walked over to the tent flap and stepped out. She was greeted by bright sunlight and a view of the forest. How long had she been out? Had Mayu captured the other mutants? Was she alive? Emma's last question was answered as Mayu stepped out of another tent. Emma walked over to her.

"Mayu! Are you ok?"
