a character in “Subject 11”, as played by ElvenEllis

Description

Image

Name:
Subject 32

Nickname:
Alice

Age:
14

Gender:
Female

Born:
Full Born

Room:
Floor 5, Room 13

Kind/Race:
Elder

Power:
Control over electrical impulses for use in multiple situations, using piano wires attached to one of the tapes on one of her fingers as a bridge for transferring and manipulating power. Because of past events, she has forgotten all of her abilities and is currently "re-learning" them from the book she carries around.

Power description:
Subject 32 is able to use electrical impulses to control inanimate objects and bend them to her will, humanoid objects such as dolls come easiest to her. She usually carries around weapons for these dolls, anything from metal lance the size of her finger to a needle that was lying around. By focusing more power into these dolls, Subject 32 can fire bursts of energy at any target around her at the cost of her energy. It's been theorized that because her dolls drain so much energy, it allows Subject 32 to leach energy from nearby electrical objects or even a living person for a larger boost. Currently, Subject 32 can only control dolls, however her powers slowly grow as she exercises them. When she's gathered enough power, she can immediately gain control over very many dolls and objects at once and rain havoc upon her targets, however doing such a thing sends her into a coma that usually lasts for one or two days. All of her abilities are learned from the book she carriers, Grimoire.

Techniques:
A list of ability branches that Alice has discovered and put into use at least once so far. Updated with new powers as time goes on. Powers are marked with what chapter of the Grimoire they have been learned from for personal reference. There are 13 chapters in total. An X marks powers which have developed on their own.

Synchronization (Ch.1)
Allows Alice to "connect" to various objects to either transfer, manipulate, or even transcribe information and energy by using electrical impulses. This is primarily used in giving her dolls energy, hacking into computer systems, or recharging energy from non-living objects. This is her most basic ability and doesn't allow her advanced control over her dolls. Examples of this power may include Alice powering a mechanism without power, or using her dolls to fire off bursts of power to attack enemies.

Darkest Light (X)[u]
The Grimoire radiates a bright yet eerie red light, which empowers any being which uses fire or the darkness as their ability as long as the surrounding area is dark. This is a passive ability which helps the holder of the Grimoire see in the dark.

[u]Halcyon Weather(Ch.2)

Allows Alice to control the wind velocity and direction, thus giving the ability to control the calmer side of the weather weather, by stimulating electrical currents in the surrounding area. This would include the direction and velocity of the wind, light showers, fog, mist, and small overcasts. The closer Alice is to cloud level, the easier it is for Alice to use this power. Cannot be used indoors.

Weakness:
Subject 32's abilities are very consuming of energy, even if she can gather energy from literally anywhere around her because of ceiling lights, cameras, wires in the walls, or living people. Also, the piano wires on her fingers can be cut to neutralize control over an object under her control until she "rebuilds" the link by getting close to what she was controlling or to input a large amount of energy. Fire can also destroy the piano wires connecting her fingers to what she's controlling, but they are easily replaced. She can also currently only control one or two dolls at max. Her stronger powers can't be summoned without the Grimoire she carries around, and in some situations she may faint due to the book's absence. She had also lost all of her abilities to amnesia.

Strong points:
Subject 32 has a large advantage over Contacted mutants because of her ability to manipulate any particular inanimate object. Although she doesn't know how to bend them to her will, she can very easily nullify such an object by forcing it to morph in an odd direction, which also tends to unleash extreme pain over the Contacted. Her abilities also grow at a steady rate over time, and has been predicted to eventually overcome her weakness of only being able to focus on attacking one person or controlling one doll at a time. Since she is only learning her powers, she has to concentrate greatly to control them, and therefore can lose all sense of fear due to extreme concentration.

Personality:
Since being taken in by the lab, Subject 32 has been a reserved person who keeps to herself and stays apart from the group. She usually cries in her sleep due to the memories of her parents dying in a house fire, and always wakes in a cold sweat. When alone, she tends to play around with her dolls, either making them do chores for her or to practice using her powers. Subject 32 likes to create dolls in her image and read books, one in particular is the one she always seems to carry around. You usually see her with a doll on her shoulder waiting for one of her commands, or reading the book she always carries around called "Grimoire". She also has a liking for the scientists, especially those with short brown hair and brown eye color, but the reason for that is uncertain. It's also noted that Alice can't remember much of anything from her past, but the scientists have discovered some of it while closely observing Alice and her family before the house fire. Alice is much more open around friends.

Fears:
Subject 32 has been afraid of fire since her house burned down before she was taken in, and because it tends to break connections between what she's controlling. She usually backs down into defensive tactics when faced by a large group of opponents, and will not attack as a result. She also tends to be shy around people she doesn't know, especially demons. Despite all these fears, they can be drowned out when Subject 32 is using her powers. This is thought to be because controlling her abilities takes up too much concentration, and as a result needs to draw attention away from other parts of her mind such as emotion.

Background story/recap:
Subject 32 was around 4 years old when she got her first doll, which looked exactly like her. She was very interested at how dolls were made, so she begged her mom to buy a book all about making dolls. However, despite her constant searches, Subject 32's mother could not find such a book to suit her precious daughter. One day on such a search, she met a man down an alleyway who had such a book, a black and red textbook that seemed only 200 pages long. She got it from the man for free, but he warned the mother of a danger of using the book. Ignoring the man, the mother went to Subject 32 and gave her the book. Delighted, Subject 32 immediately went to her room to make a doll using materials she already had. Years passed, Subject 32 had stopped making dolls until the age of 12 until she saw the same doll she first got from years ago, as well as the book. She went to the book and looked at the title, it was written in blood red ink and called "Grimoire". When she opened the book and read a section that was much more complex and detailed, she saw that the book wasn't 200 pages, but well over 1000 pages. It detailed usage of some sort of power to make the dolls move to her will. Intrigued by the idea, she went straight to work in making the piano wired tapes around her fingers. She was able to make a doll move, and float, on its own and on her first try. She showed her mom this, and she went dead silent. It was then Subject 32 found out that her mother was a mutant herself, also an Elder, who escaped from a lab years ago using such a technique. Two more years pass, Subject 32 is 14 years old. Her father had just come home, drunk and disorderly, and was trying to light a cigaret when he dropped the lighter on the gas stove, blowing it up. Subject 32 doesn't remember much after that because of her amnesia, other than being "rescued" by the one dolls she made, and then meeting the man that brought her to the labs. Since then, the scientists have taken extreme care of Subject 32, partially because the lab was already damaged and partially because of the extreme power lying dormant which was found during an initial test.

So begins...

Alice walked through the hallway leading to the mutant gathering place, escorted by two guards and a scientist, the scientist holding her black book. She seemed around 14, short blonde hair and blue eyes that could've either shown bravery or silent fear while she clutched a doll which held a mirror image of herself. Alice was led into the Mutant Gathering room, and looked back at the scientist who held her book. The man just smiled down at her and said, "Try not to get into any fights your first few days. If anything happens, I'm confident you'll make the smart decision.", and handed her back the black book. Alice took the book shyly and nodded to the scientist, whose support to Alice attracted the curious gaze of those who were not currently beating each other down. The guards and scientist left the room while Alice looked around the room. She saw some people sitting at tables, a few fighting, and even a few sleeping. Alice went to an empty table in the room and sat, and looked at the number 32 on her new wristband. She was sat in the right spot to avoid trouble, directly in front of a one-way window which scientists and guards alike peered through to watch experiments either get along or fight it out. It felt odd to have a book in a place like this, but none the less, Alice silently opened the book known as Grimoire and read the ultra-small font on the pages and over diagrams of dolls and such while she toyed with the mitten hand of the doll she had with her. It wouldn't be too long before she was noticed, but at least where she sat gave her a small amount of privacy.

Alice went to bed toward the end of the day, only getting around 12 pages of the book read. The print was so small, yet she was able to read it without growing bored in an instant. She carried her book and doll out of the room and went to the 13th cell on the 5th floor. The bed was soft, unlike those of which she had heard about from the other mutants. There was a small night table next to the bed with a cup of water, a pill, and a note. The note read, "In case you can't sleep". Alice was already tired from reading the whole day, and put the doll and book on the night table while climbing into bed. Alice noticed a camera in the corner of the room, its red light flashed while it recorded her every move. Alice just made a little wave at the camera and went to sleep.
While Alice was asleep, however, the camera caught something move on the night stand, however when it focused on the small table, all it saw was the water, the pill, the note, and the book...

Alice, or Subject 32 as she was then to be called, woke up with tears in her eyes. She had another nightmare about the house fire, a memory she doubted would ever leave her. Wiping the sweat from her head, Alice got out of bed as she picked up her book and doll. She noticed that it had moved some bit from where she put it last night, but she payed little mind to such a fact because of how tired she was. Alice was greeted by guards a few minutes after she woke up, and she was escorted to the Gathering Place. While she walked to the elevators, she noticed the walls were damaged somehow. Alice was pushed into the Gathering Place and the door closed behind her, almost dropping her book from the force of the push. Straightening herself, Alice walked to the same lonely table she sat at yesterday, opened her book and started to read. As she placed her doll down near the book, she heard the screams and cheers of a small fight going on elsewhere in the room, even though there were few mutants present. Alice only sighed as she began to read the ultra-small print, attempting not to drag too much attention to herself. Although, just having the doll around her was probably enough to catch the eyes of more than one individual.

Alice was reading her book when she noticed more mutants entering the room as time bore on. Alice decided to take a break from reading and contemplate to herself about what she's learned so far, which included being able to shift "power" between herself and the doll. Aside from being the reason the doll moves, she couldn't think of any other reason why she would need to give more of this "power" to the doll. The book was both confusing and understandable at the same time, however she felt that all the questions she had would be answered if she kept reading constantly, even if she's only gotten through the first 30 pages out of over 1000 pages she found there to be when she first opened it. It was a large book, even though on the outside it appeared fewer than 200 pages. Everything was a complicated, confusing thing that could be easily understood if she gave the effort to put the pieces together.

All these thoughts were running through her head as she watched mutants enter. Alice poked at her doll as here eyes widened in a realization: Reading the book was her only real escape from her memories of the house fire. She was just getting back to reading her book when she felt someone watching her, like when her mom was poking into her room to check on her. She took another glance over at the mutants and people to see a girl her age walking toward her. Alice quickly got back to reading the book, wrinkling the pages in a shy fear of what could happen to her in the next few moments. She felt the doll being squeezed slightly in her right hand, and she relaxed her grip as she massaged the soft silky fabric. Everything would be alright, at least that's what she hoped.

"Hey punk... You're sitting on my place!", the girl said as Alice cringed in fright. Alice was still shuddering when she heard laughing, then she looked up from her fear with a shy and confused face. "I'm sorry. I was just trying to fool with you.", the girl said with a cheer in her voice. After the girl introduced herself, Alice had calmed down and gotten a better look of the person she was faced with. The girl said her name was Subject 25, like it was customary to say their numbered name instead of their actual name. Alice first thought that she seemed sad and in need of a friend, but she mentally slapped herself for thinking that. Face-Reading was something the Grimoire had taught Alice, which allowed her to pin faces on her dolls to look realistic as well as letting her read the emotions of others. However, self-punishment wasn't about to stop her from being friendly in return.
"Erm, sure...", Alice said with a shyness in her voice as she handed the doll over. It was made of a very soft silk fabric for the clothing, and the fabric making up the skin was smooth and squishy. When you looked at the doll and back at Alice, they practically looked the same, aside from the doll having longer hair and a bow the size of its head. "I-I'm Subject 32... I like to be called Alice, though...", Alice weakly said, twirling both her index fingers around each other while Subject 25 looked over the doll. As Alice did this, the black tapes around each of her fingers could be noticed, each one with a white cross symbol on the palm-side of them. Alice then moved her hands back to her book, "This book... It's called Grimoire", she said, gaining a slight bit of confidence. The text in the book was extremely small and hard to read, and it appears that Alice was only around the 25th page or so. There also seemed to be one or two diagrams per page, mostly about dolls and such, showing what could have been an AP Chemistry coarse based on doll-making.

"Hello Alice. What a nice doll this is.", Subject 25 said, "And I'm impressed that you can read such a hard book". This caught Alice's attention, as it was very easy for her to read Grimoire. How this girl could think it was hard to read it was unfathomable to Alice, however she kept this fact to herself. Alice was lost in Subject 25's compliments and ramblings until she heard "We should be friends". "Yea... I guess we should", Alice said with a kind smile. It was the first time Alice had smiled in this place, and also the first person she felt comfortable with talking to. Suddenly, Alice saw guards surrounding her, and one said that she had to go with them. Alice had calmly closed her book and taken her doll back while the two guards went to wait by the door leading out of the room. They seemed nice... Not nice enough to give the mutants some flowers, but at least nice enough not to punch out anyone in their path. "Uh, I'll see you around, I guess", Alice said as she left the room. Subject 25 was only left with the question of why the guards were being so soft on Alice.

Alice was escorted past her room and to the lab right next door, which she was pushed into like she was back at the Gathering Place. In front of her was a large white wall and a pathway splitting off into two directions, and what looked like a tinted-glass orb. "Uh... Hello?", Alice called out, hoping someone would answer her. "Welcome, Subject 32, to your first test", a speaker loudly blared, shattering Alice's ears and forcing her to cringe. The speaker came on again, softer this time, "My apologies for the... Loud welcome. This is only because it is hard to speak to you during this experiment. You are to only find the end of this maze". Alice thought to herself how large it could have been, but shook the thought off as she entered the maze. The tinted-glass ball silently followed behind her, watching her every move...

Alice was truly lost now. Hours had passed and she was beginning to become hungry, and rubbed her burning eyes which have been staring at whitewall since the experiment began. She looked at the glass ball behind her, and picked it up, looking it over. It seemed to be able to move using a heavy radio controlled object on the inside, and had a camera which used a liquid below it to stay balanced even when rolling. Alice leaned on a wall and slid down so she was sitting against it, grabbing the orb on her way down. "I'm never getting out of here...", she said to herself, and felt like taking a nap. Right as she closed her eyes, Alice felt something tickling her, and stood up in surprise. Gridded lines began to stain her vision black, a red splotch radiating somewhere on the grid. It wasn't long until she realized this was some sort of map.

Alice reached the exit not long afterwords. She could barely see now, the grid she saw had now inflamed into a blurry ink splash. The voice on the speaker came on again. "This is very... Interesting. You will have the results of the test tomorrow. For now, you will go back into the gathering place". The ball left her as she was escorted to the gathering place. When she entered the Gathering Place, Alice just plopped down on the table and rested her head, trying to force out the black markings in her vision.

After a good nights sleep, more or less, Alice went back to the Gathering Place the next day. Along with the Grimoire and her doll, Alice held a paper describing the results of her test. When she sat down at her table and looked at the paper, she was surprised to see that her ranking on the test was on par with those who have advanced their "abilities" far higher than Alice could hope for at the moment. She was also given information about her "power" usage, which confused her the most. She hasn't been able to control her doll since the house fire, yet the paper said that she had a 5 second spike yesterday during the test. What could have caused the power spike, and what did it do? Maybe it was when those black lines appeared in her vision? Where did they come from? Questions ran through her head as she read through the paper, skimming over information she couldn't exactly understand just yet. At the bottom of the page, she read: "Side Notes: To be kept under surveillance of ability usage and power consumption / regeneration". She lowered the paper down and thought for a few seconds before sliding it behind the front cover of Grimoire and began reading again. She did notice some mutants in the far corner watching her carefully, which worried her. She took a glance around for Subject 25, and not seeing her, continued on reading.

"Hello there, what are you reading?", Subject 25 said to Alice, who had noticed her entering the room. "Oh, hi 25... This is a report the scientists gave to me about my first test", Alice said. The results of the test were those of an advanced mutant, even though her abilities were listed to be minimal if not developed at the moment. It appears she went through some sort of elaborate maze that should have taken her at least four hours to complete, the map listed on the opposite side of the page. It only took Alice two and a half hours to get through. "I dunno how I did it, but... Between you and me, when I picked up the rolling camera ball thing, a map of the maze just came to me", she said. While Alice explained what the test was like, Subject 25 may have noticed the mutants in the corner of the room were eying her and Alice carefully, like they may have wanted to pick a fight. "So... Did you sleep well...?", Alice asked, still sort of shy around her new friend. She still felt a slight bit awkward around Subject 25, but at least there was someone to talk to amidst the crowd of diversely powered mutants. Speaking of which..., Alice thought, ...this place seems like it was built for more mutants than there seem to be... I wonder why?

"Are those guys friends of yours?", 25 asked. "Huh?" Alice replied, and looked in the direction of the mutants in the corner. They looked rather ticked off about something in her opinion, but maybe they're just looking for a fight. One was the bully network's head honcho, while the two others were underlings of the system. "Uh... No, they aren't friends... They've been standing there for awhile, too...", Alice said wearily. A few seconds after Alice looked away, the group started to approach Alice and Subject 25. It's obvious they wanted to attack Alice, as she was the newest subject here at the lab and by the way they've been stalking her recently. Things were about to get ugly.

Alice suddenly felt afraid. This wasn't the same Subject 25 she came to know, and that joyous feeling she seemed to get around her had suddenly disappeared. Subject 25 suddenly went rigged and wore a demonic smile and a dark voice. "I see... Let me take care of them." Alice forced a nod, and tried reading her book. The mutants had already gained some distance toward them, the lead one already upon Alice. "Hey, kid!", he said at an unnecessary volume, causing Alice to shudder before shakily replying. "Y-yes...?" She said, looking a slight bit upward toward the mutant. He suddenly grabbed her by the shirt and pulled her up out of her seat, causing Alice to make a soft scream in surprise. "So YOUR the one who beat my man here in the Maze, huh? NO ONE's beat my man here in the maze up until now. You know what happens to people who beat my man?" He said, sending chills down Alice's spine. She felt her face burn up with a fearful blush. "N-not really..." she replied, book still in hand. This seemed to be an opening to attack, since all three of the mutants were preoccupied with Alice. Somehow, her doll had somehow gotten onto the Grimoire, and was hanging off the spine of the book. By the hand.

Sam woke up and went to the Gathering room like he was forced to every day. Today, however, he saw three bigger men approach a pair of little girls. He was out of earshot when one of them picked up one of the little girls. Approaching from behind and to the left, Sam concentrated, and a knife materialized in his hand, glowing a faint purple, the telltale sign of his manifested weapons. When he reached the confrontation, Sam drove the knife into the arm of the mutant who was holding the girl.
The combination of surprise and pain caused him to drop the girl, and Sam took the oppurtunity to drive his knee into the man's ribcage, and broke the man's nose with a quick punch. The man fell, unconsious. The other two mutants, awed by what had happened to their friend, turned and ran. Sam turned to face the girls, breaking his concentration on the knife, which faded from the arm of the now unconsious mutant.

Turning to the girls, Sam said, "You alright?"

"You alright?" Alice heard the man ask. She struggled to pick herself up, which she eventually did. Her book under arm and doll hanging onto the book somehow, she brushed herself off with her free hand. "Uh... Yea, I'm fine... Mostly..." Alice replied, still shocked by what happened. She noticed some guards by the door who looked ready to intervene in an instant with what was going on, but seeing the situation was already handled, they talked into their radios and exited... How strange. Alice sat back at her table and sighed, glad the events had taken place quickly and without cost to her. She opened her book and noticed she was at the end of the prelude chapter, which was a major accomplishment to her. However, it did not appear she was finished with the chapter yet before she was attacked, even though she picked up on the same sentence. "You alright, 2-" Alice stopped then, glaring at the book. The last sentence in the chapter was written in an odd language that she could somehow understand. While reading this sentence, she heard the sound of children laughing, saying "CoMe PlAy WiTh Us..." To Alice's fright, this is exactly what the final sentence read.

Sam smirked at the other girl. "Oh, come on. He's out cold. Although..." Sam trailed off. Moving over to the unmoving body, Sam picked him up and carried it over his shoulder over to where the nearest guard.

When he got to the guard, Sam tapped his shoulder to get his attention, as the guard was talking over his radio. The guard spun to face Sam. "How long were you standing there?" The guard asked. "A few seconds." Sam pulled the mutant off his shoulder and put him on the ground. The guard stared wide eyed for a second, until Sam said "Not dead, just out cold." The guard looked back at Sam. "Care to explain?" Sam shrugged. "Guy was picking on a little girl. What'd you want me to do?"

The guard poked the unmoving form with his boot. "Alright. Whatever." Grabbing his radio again, the guard said "Can I get a stretcher over here?" Laughing to himself, Sam turned to walk back. The guard stopped him. "This is technically a mutant/mutant incident. I'm gonna need your number." Sam said "441, sir," and walked back to the girls.

Once he was back with the girls, Sam turned to the one who had told him to finish off the other mutant. Smiling, Sam said "Mayu does it best." The smile fell, and Sam said "So who are you two?"

Alice blinked. She had blanked out and up until when the man said "Mayu does it best", she hadn't been able to tear her complete focus away from the book. The laughing children left her mind, and she eased. Everything happened so quickly, almost too quickly to understand. Alice closed the book and pocked the doll, then nodded. "My name's Subject 32... B-but I like to go by Alice..." she said. It's obvious that Alice is normally the shy kind of person who would rather be passive to a situation rather than smack in the middle of it. She put a hand to her head and leaned on the table with her elbow, trying to get through a sudden headache that just came on after closing the book. "I-I'm going to go to my room..." she said, and made her way to the door. One of the guards stopped her. "And what do you think your doing?" one said. Alice looked up at the guard, "Getting some rest..." she said. The guard talked into his radio and appeared slightly shocked by the reply he received. "...We'll escort you." he said, standing out of the doors way and lightly pushing Alice out of the room. It seemed strange that the guards would act so nice to her, and such movements of kindness have happened before. They are being very suspicious. ((By the way, Alice is a VALUABLE subject to the scientists because of the odd nature of her abilities... Better to have her treated well rather than given the incentive to run away.))

Blood. So much blood. And so much laughter. So many smiles and wide eyes. It's horrifying. Make it stop. Make it stop...

"AHH!" Alice screamed as she woke from the nightmare. It wasn't like any dream she's ever had before, and this one was even more real than the others. The people she saw seemed familiar, even though she's never met them before. Although she's grown used to the nightmares by now, this one had been enough to reduce Alice to tears afterwords. She cried and cried until almost half an hour had passed, and she slid out of bed and took up the Grimoire and her doll. She looked down at the doll, and it looked up at her. She hugs the doll softly to herself and she walked out of her room, straight into a scientist.

"U-um... S-sorry..." She said to the scientist. He just looked down at her and smiled.

"No, it's my fault for not keeping my distance from the door. I just came to check on you. Also, we have to run another test today." He said with a smile which seemed to brighten Alice's spirits.

"Alright..." Alice simply said, and she was led down the hall and to the nearby lab. This time the room wasn't a confusing maze, but rather filled with pedestals with different materials on them. She had to once again become used to the lighting of the room in order to see properly. Also, she noticed that most of the flooring of the room was now engraved with a metal fence. The loudspeaker came on again, and thankfully didn't blow out her ears this time. The scientist stayed near Alice.

"Hello again, Subject 32. In this experiment, we will try to see what your abilities react to. Based on the... Odd results of your last test, we will be attempting to see if your ability is based on a wider perspective. Please take off your shoes and step onto the metal fenced floor." The speaker said. She heard a buzzing as he said metal fence, and wondered what may happen next. Alice took off her shoes and stepped onto the floor, and felt a rush through her body. She winced from the feeling.

"i-It kinda tickles..." She said. Her eyes widened as she realized there must be electricity flowing through the fenced floor. But the amount of noise it was making...

"The fence is circulating enough electrical power to knock out the scientist standing behind you, who is wearing rubber boots. Based on what we are observing, you seem to absorb electricity. Though this means you may control electricity, we don't know how you control it. As a start, lets step off the metallic floor to see what happens." She heard. Her grip began to loosen around her book, and she put her doll away. She became relaxed, and stepped off the plate. Immediately, she gasped and collapsed onto the ground as the power once surging through her then disappeared. The scientist helped Alice to her feet, and she rubbed her head with her free hand. What happened? "Interesting. The power you absorbed seems to have dissipated without a trace..." Some time passed, and Alice looked at the Grimoire. It felt slightly lighter under her arm. "...We ask that you get some breakfast and rest in the Gathering Place. You will report back for testing later today." She heard, and the scientist ushered her out of the room. Her shoes were left behind, but this was because she was going to be the only one using the room today and also because the room needed a thorough examination to find where the electricity went.

Alice walked into the Gathering Place that morning with a tray of fresh food, and at the time it seemed there were few people in the room and no one who cared to try and steal from her. The plate contained a couple of cinnamon pop tarts, some milk, two rolls of bread with plenty of butter, and two scrambled eggs. She chowed down, since she hasn't eaten for awhile. At the side of her plate, she noticed, was a AA Battery. She picked it up and looked it over, there was a note taped to it. "Play with this for awhile" The note said. She looked it over, unsure of what to do, and just sat it next to her now empty tray as she opened the Grimoire and began the first chapter after the prologue. She felt a cold chill pass over her as she opened the book, and shook off the feeling as she began reading. The title of the chapter had a Roman numeral "I" and the name "Mach". There was a biography about the girl named Mach, but it was mostly centered around her apparent ability to control the impulses within electricity so she could use it for diverse purposes. It went on to explain how she could use it to access computerized systems with her mind, and even transport energy from one place to another like a walking battery. Alice's eyes widened at how coincidental the situation of the experiments over the past few days were with what this chapter is about. She had picked up the ball-cam from the maze experiment and somehow saw a map of the maze on the spot, and just a few minutes ago she had absorbed and released electricity from a charged metal grating. Surely this couldn't all be connected somehow?

"Hello there." Was what Alice had heard after reading through two full pages after the biography. She had learned a lot about her current abilities from the Grimoire, but only enough to figure out how to easily transfer energy from one object to the next without starting a fire. The only problem now was putting that new skill to action. "Oh, uh, hello 25..." Alice said with some shyness while twiddling the toes on her bare feet. The hard metal floor chilled her in a way that made her feel like she was charged by the fence again. "I'm just reading right now, nothing much really going on." Alice said. She took notice that the person who had saved her earlier wasn't here yet, but she pushed that fact aside as she closed her book to talk to Subject 25. It was probably the first time she dropped reading just to talk to someone since she got to the lab. "So, whats going on?" She asked, wondering what 25 might have to talk about. She heard some mutants fighting and turned around to watch.

Two mutants seemed to be arguing over who would get the last apple on their breakfast tray, as it seemed they were sharing today. One appeared to be very swift while the other had domain over wind currents. It was your basic every day fist fight, a left hook here and a right kick to the chest there, and after a few minutes the one who could control wind had fallen to the faster mutant. The faster mutant snatched up the apple and ate it in one bite, and Alice had to admit it was a bit humorous to see people fighting over something so insignificant. But it was still painful to watch two mutants, two of the same kinds of people, fight each other just for breakfast.

Alice turned back around and picked up the battery, examining it again and waiting for 25's reply. She felt the metal ends of the battery on her fingers, but felt no tingle like she did in the lab. She sighed and was about to put the battery down when her other hand was passively set onto the Grimoire, and the tingling feeling was then felt. She set down the battery and the feeling dissipated. She picked up the battery and put it back down a few times out of curiosity and found that the feeling only came when she was in contact with the Grimoire. After putting the battery down for the last time, she thought, Could it be that my power is given to me by the Grimoire? But I'm an Elder, how could that be? The Contacted class of mutants were the ones who gained their power from objects of value, after all...

"Nothing much", 25 had replied to Alice. Alice sighed, and put down the battery. "I guess that's a good thing around here, isn't it?" Alice said to Subject 25. "Say, why is it you don't have a name? Why do you just call yourself 25?" Alice inquired, curious to why she had to use a number to identify the closest friend she had here. The fact that we were all called by numbers half confused and half ticked her off. It just seemed wrong to her, even though she had mostly forgotten about right and wrong since the house fire. In fact, the reason why she forgot everything somehow confused her. It didn't feel like she was hit in the head or anything, otherwise she'd probably have a large mark on her head or some sort of throbbing feeling. Why can't I remember? Alice thought to herself.

Right then, the person who had saved her the day before had arrived, standing over Alice, who was sitting down in her seat. "Hey there Alice. Hi 25. How are you girls?" He asked. 25 got up and started conversing with him, while Alice muttered a quick "I'm fine" to him and fell back into her train of thought. Lately, she's been feeling drained of energy for some reason. She was getting enough sleep, even more than she needed if that's even possible, and she wasn't occasionally beat down to a pulp on a daily basis unlike a good majority of the mutants here. Alice rubbed a heavy eye and got back to toying with the battery, which seemed to wake her up a bit just twirling it around between her fingers. It was a natural talent she had, being able to twirl a pencil or some object between her fingers in any which direction at any which speed. She smiled at the thought of having something to be proud of. She put down the battery again and fell back into thought a while later.

"Whats up, Alice?" She heard the man say. "Hm?" Alice picked her head up to focus on him. She rubbed a heavy eyelid and put on a small fake smile. It wasn't like her body was giving her a choice, anyway. "Oh, it's nothing... Just thinking... Uh, 441 was it...?" She said. For some reason, Alice was starting to become a bit tired. She rubbed her face with both hands, and then seemed to be awake again. "Really, it's nothing. I'm just thinking about my abilities, that's all." She said, hoping to convince him after what she just said. Alice got her doll out and started poking around it with her fingers and turning it over in both her hands, just looking it over at the moment. It really was a good mirror image of her, but to Alice, something was missing.

Emma grimaced behind her helmet. "Mayu, smoking them out may not work. If it doesn't our guards on the ground will have a hard time having to round them up. Our best bet, unfortunately, would be to go in on foot immediately. Unfortunate because they probably went there because one or more of them know the area well." Emma paused as she considered the different outcomes. "If we are going to do this, we need to be smart about it." Emma got on the radio. "Before entering the forest, I expect you to have double-checked your gear, and found your squad. Remember, we need to be fast, not hasty."

Turning to Mayu, Emma took a deep breath. "You and I are going in together." Emma revved the engine on your bike. "We are going to need to move fast, so keep up." Turning in the direction of the forest, Emma gunned the motor on her bike, and rushed off in the direction of the forest.

"Really, it's nothing. I'm just thinking about my abilities, that's all." Sam nodded. "Knowledge is power, I suppose. Know your limits, and you won't need to worry about hurting yourself when you need your powers." Sam shook his head. "Psions like me have it worst, though. So many different abilities, endless as the imagination. I mean, a psion has the ability to release a massive amount of psychic energy in a single, concentrated blast, but if it isn't channeled right, you end up one of the victims." Sam shook his head. "That's why I chose manifestation." Sam formed a small, glowing purple ball, and threw it onto the ground. It bounced off the floor, then off the ceiling, and finally dissipated just as it hit the floor again. "I can make anything, provided it isn't too complex." Sam smiled. "Enough about my powers, though. What's your power?"
