In addition, her right eye (the one covered by the eyepatch) is able to see into the world of the dead. The left sees into the world of the living. Since she's usually keeping an eye on the living, she wears her eyepatch over her right eye to avoid seeing too much at once.

Maria is a loving mother and a caring friend, feeling great compassion for the souls that wander the human earth. Due to the sheer amount of times she has kept a soul in her realm and witnessed that person's funeral alongside them, she has grown rather distantβthese funerals are often extremely hard to watchβand very idealistic. She still believes that there is a way to stop the war, and would do anything to attempt to make that true. Despite being somewhat aloof at times due to her fairly detached demeanor, she tries her best to keep her realm a place of safety and acceptance.

Family Relations: Mother of Xenos and Ludovica; Grandmother of Ingris, Malin, Shoe, Bennie, and Alfonso; Great-grandmother of Kayin, Niven, and Ludovica; Great-great-grandmother of Shoe, Ingris, and Malin; Temporary partner of Life and Alfonso
Maria was one of the three original entities that existed in this world. Her domainβor rather, her realmβwas those who existed in-between life and death, and her job to help souls process the journey from living to dying. Where she came from, when she was created, and how she came to be are mysteries, but one thing is for sureβshe was partially responsible for the downfall of the family.
Shortly after Afterlife's birth, Maria got wrapped up with Life. Though hesitant at first, she agreed to spending a night with Life and ended up giving birth to Xenos through the pregnancy that resulted. This added to Death's bitterness and resulted in the sealing of Afterlife and Death's subsequent affair with Maria's son.
For a while, Maria stayed far away from the affairs of her family. She stuck to her own dimension, avoiding the conflict that sprung up between Life and Death. But after Life was sealed and Alfonso began his prowl by spending the night with Death, Maria got caught up in her grandson's charm and spent a night with him, conceiving Ludovica.
Maria quickly realized what she had done, and stayed close to herself within her realm. Xenos rejected her motherly affections and Alfonso no longer wanted anything to do with her, so Maria focused most of her attention on building a relationship with Ludovica. The two were able to form a bond, and Maria felt stronger than ever that she somehow had to end all of these conflicts before her daughter was destroyed.
This is what she focuses on now, staying safe in her realm while she plots a way to save her souls.
