Bennie glanced over her shoulder at Life, smiling. It seemed her old partner was at least willing to listen to her for a little bit, even if it wouldn't last.

But it was a good question. How would she keep Life safe? If Life's soul were to die and join Bennie in her realm, that would be ideal, but Bennie had a feeling the entity of Life wouldn't die that easily. The best course of action would be to just wait for everyone to be distracted and run, but Shoe was too alert for that, Alfonso was basically a master at hunting down cute little humans, and Ludovica seemed like she had her eye on Life.

Bennie thought for a moment. "Good question, babe. I'm not completely sure, but I'll figure it out."

As she spoke, she allowed her skin to secrete the pheromones that had charmed Life in the first place. Maybe she could distract the others that way and let Life just run. But how would Bennie track her down again afterwards? There had to be something she could use. A phone? An address?

She noticed Alfonso stiffen slightly. Shoe's ears pricked, and her nose sniffed curiously at the air. Good--that meant those two at least had noticed her power. It would affect Life too, wouldn't it? Now what?

Bennie groaned to herself. "Plans ain't really my strong suit. But if you could be a darling and run as far as you can for me, that'd be fantastic. Leave me some bread crumbs to follow or something, 'kay?"

"I..." Life's mind raced, bouncing between the sudden and familiar attraction she felt to Bennie, what kind of bread crumbs she could leave, and the danger of leaving her tree. "Yeah, alright, I can do that."

Without missing a beat, she dug into her supply bag and took out a map of a small town and the area surrounding it. The town wasn't far off from the woods, and figured leaving a map for Bennie was the only way she could leave "bread crumbs" without cluing everyone else in on her location, as well.

The new entity with the long, pink hair and eerily calm red eyes--Ludovica, if Life remembered correctly--seemed somewhat torn between focusing on Bennie or Life, clearly already starting to be affected by the pheromones. Life herself was starting to be affected as well, but willed herself to focus on running.

She quickly lowered herself down the tree, jumping from branch to branch, ignoring any scratches or bruises she got along the way. Once on solid ground, she tossed the map to Bennie and ran without looking back.

Part of her felt like it was pointless to run, because there was nowhere to run to, and another part of her didn't want to run at all--but Life attributed that to the pheromones doing their magic.

Ignoring those feelings inside of her, she continued to run as fast as she could. There was a lot of doubt and despair building up inside of her, but there was also hope. And more than anything, Life knew she needed to cling to that hope, because that's what would keep her going. In that moment, she let the hope inside of her fester, and she felt brave again.

Life--life--could still flourish. Nothing else had to die. The world had potential, had room to grow and prosper, and that was one of the things Life loved about it so much.

Though Death--death--existed, life could still be never-ending.

Bennie caught the map that was tossed to her, immediately hiding it down her cleavage. She took a smoke from her pipe, observing the others. There would be time for her to find Life after she was certain the pheromones had done their job.

She approached Alfonso first, placing her hands on his shoulders. He hissed at her.

"D*mn you...Bennie," he whispered. Bennie blew a puff of smoke right in his face. He coughed. "I know exactly what you're doing, you vixen."

"Isn't that precious?" He hadn't tried to push her away yet, which meant the pheromones had already taken hold. It figured; Bennie had a feeling her brother was more susceptible to these sorts of things. Humming, she scratched under his chin and left him, kneeling in front of Shoe and Ludovica. "And how are you ladies doing? Lonely? In need of some lovin'?"

"Get away from my daughters," Alfonso ordered. Bennie laughed.

"Please. I wonder how many times little Ludo here said something similar to you?" At this, Bennie reached out to touch Ludovica's leg. "I'll accept being a vixen when you accept being a playboy."

Shoe howled. Bennie slid her pipe back behind her ear and petted the wolf. If everything went well, she would meet Life soon, but...there was no harm in staying to play around a bit before she left, was there?

Ludovica closed her eyes, shuddering internally. "With all due respect, Aunt Bennie, I'm actually strictly neutral when it comes to the whole.... Life v Death situation, so if you could..."

She trailed off, an unwelcome part of her not wanting to finish the sentence.

Thinking about it, Ludovica had never had a taste for women--or anyone, for that matter. She hated everyone and everything aside from her children, and the only reason she sought out their would-be fathers was simply because she wanted more children. Really, everyone else was completely and utterly disgusting.

Maybe that was why she hated this feeling so much--she knew it wasn't hers, and she knew the real her hated it, but she couldn't help but...

Ludovica's cheeks turned rosy. She bit the inside of her cheek. "Y-you really are a vixen, aren't you?"

Gotcha.

Bennie always loved seeing her power take hold, especially on a pretty girl like Ludovica. There was something immensely satisfying about knowing she'd won out over any sheer willpower or aversions.

She heard Alfonso groan behind her, and glanced at him to find her brother crouched to the ground, rubbing his head. Bennie smirked; it was amusing to see Alfonso so thoroughly defeated.

"I'll take that as a compliment," she said, addressing Ludovica. "Neutral or not, I made a promise. And Auntie Bennie doesn't like to break her promises. That said, I promise I'll show you a good time if you want it."

Her hands moved with her legs as she stood, resting her fingers on Ludovica's hips. Alfonso and Shoe both growled at her. To soothe the wolf, Bennie removed one hand to pet her.

"Let her go," Alfonso demanded.

"And let you have all the fun? What, are you jealous? I can get to you later, bro, but I really prefer girls."

"F-f*ck you." The way Alfonso's voice trembled brought immense satisfaction to Bennie.

"Well, if you insist," she cooed. "But like I said, I'm not gonna like it. I really prefer your daughter."

So long as Life was safe...this sort of thing was fine for now, right?

"You..." Ludovica's eyes fluttered. She clenched her fists, lightly, feeling the resentment inside of her begin to well up. Oh, how she hated it--the feeling of helplessness, the quickly fading desperation to resist...

Listening to what Bennie was saying, Ludovica realized it wasn't just hate and disgust dwelling in the back of her own mind, but something else. It felt too familiar. The paralyzation, the discomfort--was it fear? She couldn't quite tell anymore.

You don't really care, do you? She heard her father's voice calling out weak accusations, but hearing them only made Ludovica giggle. It was in moments like this she knew he didn't care. She wasn't his daughter--she was practically another soul in his collection. He was only getting defensive because Ludovica was his, not Bennie's, and Ludovica hated that. Of course you don't care. You never did, and you never will, and we both know that.

"And you're just like him, aren't you?" She whispered, breath catching in her throat. As much as she refused to accept it, the pheromones were working quite well. She loved feeling the way she did. "Brother and sister, vixen and playboy. No real regard for others... it never matters who, not really."

Image

Looking back on it, perhaps it would've been a better idea to pace herself, rather than just run like she was being chased by a pack of rabid dogs.

But on the other hand, considering Ludovica was apparently the entity that governed death by wildlife and there was a wolf there, running like H*ll wasn't such a bad idea either.

Life panted, leaning against a tree for a support. She just needed to catch her breath, and then she could continue. She just needed to catch her breath...

It wasn't like she was being chased anyway, right? Even in a short amount of time, she'd managed to run quite a ways away. (Her current body, though small, was fairly strong--and not to mention, young. In a way, it was a miracle this was the body she'd ended up with at the time.) So as long as Bennie was working her magic, Life would be alright.

She huffed. Running was exhausting, and it was still so cold out...

"Wh-who's there?" Life asked, suddenly. She'd heard a sound. "I-I swear, if it's another one, I'm going to be so done..."

"Well."

The best part of working with Bennie's powers was when her little victims tried not to let her see that it was working.

"You're not wrong, sugarplum."

Vixen and playboy. That was what defined them, wasn't it? To think both entities had come from a crazy lunatic and a death goddess. They were siblings, alright.

Bennie pulled the map out of her cleavage and checked it. The distance to the nearest town wasn't too far; she could probably make it within a day if she ran. So there was really no need to rush, really.

"I'll admit I'm at least a bit more particular than this stick in the mud. At least I don't prey on weak children." Bennie returned to the tree and sat down beneath it, crossing her ankles. Shoe padded over and lay down beside her, resting her fluffy muzzle on Bennie's thigh. "I have a bit of time, if you want me."

Alfonso spat on the ground, mumbling to himself. Bennie couldn't remember the last time she'd seen her brother so flustered.

Life had plenty of time, and so did Bennie.

Taking a walk on earth always filled Malin with a sense of calm. He cared deeply for this planet; its beautiful trees, its beautiful animals, its beautiful people. Humans and their souls, full of wonder, full of life--that was what he loved the most.

Of course, his stupid parents didn't get that. "You'll grow out of it," they said. "He's just in a phase," they said. "One day you'll realize how ridiculous this is," they said.

Pathetic. Was Malin really in the wrong for so enjoying a planet that had been brought into being by who he considered the most brilliant entity to ever live?

The sound of someone panting caught his ear. Curious (and a bit worried), Malin moved to observe the noise.

A human leaned against a tree. Long, black hair fell straight by her sides, and her pale face, delicate and young, flushed with sweat. Malin moved towards her, admittedly worried about the poor little thing.

His foot crunched a pine cone.

"Wh-who's there?" the girl gasped. Malin retreated behind a tree, nervous. It'd been so long since he'd run into a human and chatted with one; would she even like him? "I-I swear, if it's another one, I'm going to be so done..."

"Another one"? That caught Malin's ear. He emerged from behind his tree, sticking his hands in his pockets, and observed the girl. Her soul didn't feel particularly remarkable, and yet, at the same time, he got a sense that something about her was different.

Another one. Another entity?

His parents.

"Is my stupid mom sending a wolf after you?" was his opening line.

A part of Ludovica almost cried out "wait" when Bennie left her side and sat beneath the tree.

"You act like you give people a choice," Ludovica started, somewhere between aroused and angry. Slowly, she treked over to Bennie, and took a seat next to her, running a hand through her own hair. "But really, you're manipulating them with your powers. You act like you're better than him, but on what grounds--your difference in taste and attack?"

Ludovica sighed, whimsically. "Even now..."

"Even now, you're doing it, and I almost hate you for it." She glanced over at Bennie, her eyes radiating lust.

His mother?

Life grew tense. Against all odds, it was another one, and she wasn't safe in a tree this time.

She stepped away from the newcomer, breathing still heavy. She looked him over, briefly, then glanced over her shoulder out of paranoia. At least he didn't know who she was--yet. Or what if he did?

Better yet, what if he was on her side?

Her heart raced. She doubted it. There was no way he'd end up here, out of the blue, and also happen to be on her side. That'd just be too coincidental, and not to mention, lucky.

Then again, her luck seemed to be all over the place. First she ran into a pedophile and his entity-smelling wolf, then his perverted sister who actually ended up helping her, and... well, Life wasn't so sure how to feel about Ludovica yet, but her first instinct was "don't trust anyone."

Speaking of trust and entities, however, there was the matter of this new gentleman now. "Who are you, a-and what do you want?"

She prepared herself for the worst.

Bennie laughed, carefree. Alfonso brought himself to her other side, and Bennie slipped her arms around both him and Ludovica. Moments like these made her wonder why she didn't use her powers on other entities more often.

And then she remembered.

The helpless feeling, not being able to act on your own whims, not being able to operate according to your own desires, not having a choice...that was something very entity despised. They were creations who existed to control. And to not be in control, well...Bennie had felt that once. She had felt it when Xenos sealed Life away, and she could do nothing to stop it.

Her powers stopped. Her skin ceased the production of the pheromones that had drawn her brother and niece to her, and immediately, Shoe's ears pricked and the wolf went to stand behind Ludovica.

"I am not like him," Bennie stated, the low rumble of her voice surprising even her. "Wanna know why? 'Cause I know how to stop. I have somewhere to be, babes. Catch you back in the realms?"

A lack of control. Every entity's worst fear, and one Bennie couldn't bring herself to capitalize on. Humans were one thing, but to selfishly manipulate others like her crossed a line she had drawn.

It was the line that kept her from being just like her brother.

"You're weak, Bennie."

Speaking of the monster.

"I should have known you couldn't go through with it. Where did you send Life?"

"Not telling, nerd." Bennie winked at them over her shoulder. "If you'll excuse me, I have a trail of bread crumbs to follow."

She pulled the map out once more, trying to figure out how to follow it properly. Alfonso's hand gripping her arm caught her off-guard.

"You're not getting away that easy, dearie. If we can't have her, neither can you."

Sh*t. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to reactivate her powers after all.

Image

Malin was, admittedly, unsure how to answer. This poor little girl spoke like she knew about the entities, but how could that be possible? If she'd met one, she'd probably be dead by now. She was small, cute, frail, and--

"In Life's name. My stupid dad is after you, isn't he?" Malin crossed his arms, then uncrossed them and stuck the eraser end of a pencil in his mouth. He chewed on it. "Or my stupid aunt is after you. Or maybe my stupid grandfather is trying to seal you in a clock for fun. My family is stupid."

That wouldn't do. This human needed help, clearly, and Malin intended to help her. Even if his stupid family would hate him for it. Maybe he could stick around her and escort her to the next town, or just hang around her and make sure his stupid family didn't find her, or maybe he would straight-up become her new bodyguard. If he could save even one human, it'd be worth it.

But first, he had to earn her trust.

"I'll be blunt. I'm Malin, I'm the entity in charge of death by murder, and I want to help you get away from my stupid family because they're all stupid and they don't understand how great humanity is, because they're stupid."

Ludovica shuddered, suddenly.

Ludovica breathed out, blinking, then quickly stood. She felt a chill from the quick-coming night, and the urge to curl up, alone, in an old blanket overcame her.

It was the want to be alone that made her realize Bennie stopped. Suddenly, her anger welled up inside of her. More than anything, she hated feeling helpless--it was the same feeling she had around her father, and it was what she avoided more than anything else. No, on top of that, it was what she hated more than anything else, and feeling it then had sent her for a spin.

She was a second away from losing control, but she caught herself before anyone could see what she was really like.

In a flash, she was her fake, loving, peace-wanting self.

"W-wait," Ludovica called out to her father and aunt, "can't we settle this in a different way? Does it always have to end in aggression? I don't want to see my family fight."

I hope you both burn.

Image

"In... in Life's name?" Life asked, unbelieving.

She thought back to her supposed allies. Bennie listed three people--Kayin, their child, herself, and who else? Part of her swore it was Malin--this entity's name, supposedly--but she was sure that was just her mind playing tricks on her. She just wanted it to be Malin, so she was remembering it as Malin, right?

Right?

She huffed. What would happen if she was wrong, and she trusted this person, and it backfired terribly?

But what if he really was on her side, and this was perhaps the best thing that could've happened?

Blinking, Life decided to let go of her skepticism. It was all or nothing, and she was desperate enough to believe him. What reason was there for him to lie anyway?

"I'll be blunt too. I'm Life, I'm exhausted, and there may well be a wolf after me--I can't really tell."

Why did everything always have to end like this when Bennie was around? All Alfonso had wanted was a chance to seduce a new soul for his collection, and maybe some nice time with his daughters. Instead, his sister had to show up, chase Life away, and activate her obnoxious powers. For once, Alfonso wished Bennie would just keep out of his life.

He was seconds away from just punching his sister in the face when he heard Ludovica's voice.

"W-wait, can't we settle this in a different way? Does it always have to end in aggression? I don't want to see my family fight."

"Yeah, Alfie, we're family. Let's not fight," Bennie urged. The urge to punch her swelled exponentially.

But still, Ludovica was right. Huffing, Alfonso released Bennie's arm, and she rubbed her wrist.

He had to do something. She couldn't be allowed to chase Life down. Bennie had to be kept away from her--Alfonso would not allow her to win.

He grabbed the map. Shocked, Bennie tugged on it. The two tussled over the cloth map, yanking and pulling, neither one quite willing to give up.

Then Shoe approached, caught the map in her fangs, and yanked hard. The map tore.

Shoe barked once, dropping the piece of the map that had come off in her sharp teeth. Bennie stood, frozen, while Alfonso acted quickly and snatched up the missing piece of the map. He stuffed it down the front of his pants for safekeeping.

Bennie stared. "...I really don't want to get that myself, but I will if I have to. Give it."

"No." A smug grin crossed Alfonso's features. Ah, the sweet scent of victory.

Bennie looked at her map and grinned. "It's still intact enough, loser."

Alfonso's grin faded.

Without missing a beat, Shoe sprang up, chomped on the map again, and tore it out of Bennie's hands. Bennie cried out in shock and went to retrieve it.

Shoe ate the map.

Alfonso had never been more proud in all his life.

Image

"I'll be blunt too. I'm Life..."

Malin didn't hear the rest of what she said.

This was Life. This was Life? The legendary entity who had granted beauty to the earth? The one entity who didn't insist on killing everything they touched? This little girl was that creation?

Malin was starstruck. He opened his mouth, closed it, flicked his pencil up and down between his fingers, and began pacing. This was Life. This was Life.

This is Life.

"I-I--you're actually--you're Life." Malin tried not to act on his growing desire to crawl into a hole deep in the earth and die of humiliation. Stuttering in front of the one entity he loved the most? The one who might understand him? Pathetic.

"Sh*t. Sh*t. My stupid family probably knows you're here." Malin ran a hand through his hair, kicking a rock. "This sucks. They suck. Death sucks. Okay, listen, look. D*mmit, Mal, focus, stupid. You get it, right? Why humans are way better than stupid entities and--shut up, Mal, stupid, of course she does. She made them. You made them. Holy--I'm such a fan. Wait, just...I'll figure out some way to keep them away from you. You're Life. Holy sh*t. You're Life."

What was that word the humans used for moments like this?

"Fangirling".

Malin was effectively "fangirling".

Ludovica watched her child swallow the map, proudly.

"Well, that's a nice way to settle things, isn't it?" She asked, smiling. "Now it's a stalemate. Well. Unless Shoe began tracking down Life, which would be unfortunate..."

She spoke as if that was a bad thing, but her eyes sparkled menacingly.

Image

Malin's reaction wasn't at all what she'd expected.

He was on her side. Someone was actually on her side, and not for their own benefit?

She was afraid to trust anyone or anything she heard, but then, in that moment, she felt it--the same love for birds, flowers, the summer breeze, humans, radiating from his being.

Life couldn't quite tell how she knew, but she did. In reality, it was probably her desperation for someone who understood her that made her feel that way, but she didn't care. As far as she knew, Malin loved creation the same way she did, and that gave her so much hope--hope that she would cling to until the end of her days.

She breathed in, sharply.

"You're--you're on my side, I..." She laughed, breathily. "You're actually..."

Are you tearing up, you wimp? Have you really grown so soft?

She glanced back in the direction of the others, partly out of worry, partly to hide her face.

"I can't... I--we? No, sorry, I'm probably just being--I need to run."

Bennie groaned, kneeling in front of Shoe and whapping her lightly on the side. "Bad wolf. Spit it out! I need that!"

Shoe tried to bite her. Bennie retracted her hand just in time.

Curse her brother and his loyal pet wolf. Curse Shoe's sharp teeth and strong jaw. Curse the waiting period before the map would pop out the other end.

Alfonso was probably having a party right now. No--he was definitely having a party.

I hate my brother.

How was Bennie supposed to find Life now? Her best bet was to just start wandering. So, standing, she cracked her neck, picked a direction, and started walking.

Alfonso laughed at her, the sound clearly mocking her.

If Bennie had an ounce less self control, she would have kicked him in his wandering balls.

Image

Malin breathed a sigh of relief, which emerged partially as a laugh. "Yeah, the rest of those stupid jerks think Death is right or they're too lazy and weak to get involved. Or they're insane, like my stupid grandpa. They don't get that life is beautiful--not that you're--I mean, sure, you're pretty, but--never mind."

Gosh. Was he hitting on her? What was next, he would ask her to be his best friend? The desire to die peacefully while buried deep in the earth grew.

Run. She had to run. They had to run? Was he officially in Life's little clique?

He scratched his neck with the hand that didn't continuously spin a pencil around. "Yeah. Running. You look tired. I can, uh...carry you, or whatever. Whatever. It's whatever. Not that you're whatever, the stuff you do--did--do? It's cool. You're cool. Not like my stupid family. W-whatever."

Dying in a hole seemed more appealing every second.

So she's just going to hope she's going the right way? Ludovica thought, watching her aunt. How pathetic.

Ludovica walked over to Shoe and knelt down, running her hand through the wolf's fur. That her father wasn't already tracking down Life made her fists clench. If he was truly on Death's side--if he wasn't an idiot who played around too much, rather--Life would already be in their hands.

She wanted to sic Shoe on the girl already, but she feared revealing her true demeanor. No, the Ludovica everyone else knew wouldn't be so hasty to inflict violence.

Ludovica was torn. The lengths she went to hide herself from the others were irritating, at times.

But how else would she find a way to kill them if they didn't see it coming?

Quietly enough so that Alfonso couldn't hear, she whispered something to Shoe. "You can still sense where Life is, can't you?"

Image

"They are all stupid jerks, aren't they?" Life muttered, nodding with what he was saying. "Uh, you don't suppose you can outrun a wolf, do you? W-well. I say that like I'm being chased, but I guess I don't actually know..."

She felt awkward all of the sudden. His awkwardness was rubbing off on her.

Life coughed. "Out of paranoia, I'd like to keep running, even if I don't need to. Because when it comes down to it, I'm going to need to. I need to do a lot of running, most likely."

It all depended on whether or not Bennie could work her magic. A part of Life felt like she had time, but the other side of her was shouting run.

Run.

Just thinking that word made her more anxious.

It was three against one, after all. How much time could Bennie really buy her? What was happening at that exact moment? Life had no way of knowing, and she knew from experience she couldn't depend on good things happening. No, if she was smart, she'd run--even if she really did have all the time in the world.

"W-would it be really weird if I took you up on your offer to carry me?"

Ah, how Shoe missed being human.

Being sealed in a wolf gave her the added advantage of being to sniff out any entity within miles of her, but everything else was so obnoxious. Still, she supposed it wasn't too bad; at least her mother still pet her, and her grandfather was good to her. She snuggled up next to Ludovica, resting her head against her mother's side.

The quiet words made her ears prick.

"You can still sense where Life is, can't you?"

Yes, Shoe longed to say. Yes, I am a good girl. I am a good daughter. I can track Life down for you, Mommy. I can rip her to pieces for you, Mommy. I am a good wolf. I am a good daughter. I love you.

So many words stuck in her throat. Instead, she merely nodded. Making noise would alert Alfonso, and for whatever reason, Ludovica obviously didn't want him following them. If only she could ask why.

I want to get out. Mommy, let me out. Can I get out? Why not?

So many words that couldn't emerge. So many words she missed being able to say.

She snuggled into Ludovica's side. She would help her mother somehow, to thank her for always being there. She would figure something out.

She would tear Life to shreds.

Image

"A wolf?

Shoe. Of course. If Shoe was there, that meant Alfonso was there. How many others were after Life?

It didn't matter. Cautious, as if dreading being pushed away, Malin advanced towards Life and crouched next to her, gesturing for her to climb on his back.

"It's easiest this way. I'm not the fastest, but I can at least put some extra distance between us. H-hopefully this isn't weird or whatever. I'm not a gross pedo like my stupid dad so I promise not to make it weird on purpose or whatever."

Ludovica nodded, slowly. Part of her wanted to track down Life immediately, but she knew hasty behavior would only end in regret, so she addressed her father instead.

"What are you going to do?" She asked, frowning slightly. "It'd probably be best if Death knew we found Life--well, if you could call this finding her. It's more like we ran into her."

She paused, thinking about what to say next.

"But then again, maybe it'd be best to follow Aunt Bennie. In case she goes the right way, that is. Whatever happens, though, I'd like to stay with Shoe--if that's okay." She inhaled, slowly. "I just feel like I haven't seen her in such a long time, you know?"

Image

"Your dad really is a creep, isn't he?" Life muttered. Hesitantly, she hopped onto his back, carefully and cautiously wrapping her arms around his neck.

Was she being weird? Was it weird to suddenly meet them and almost immediately ask them to carry you to safety?

It was probably very weird, and it made her feel very uncomfortable, but the desperateness of the situation called for this, didn't it?

Well, she couldn't really tell whether it was a desperate situation or not. For all she knew, she had hours. But on the other hand, she might've had no more than a few seconds. There was no way to tell, so clearly, this was the best path to take.

But why did she feel awkward?

Maybe it all boiled down for it being weird. It was weird that a little girl was climbing onto a stranger's back, that was for sure.

Alfonso stared off into the forest, twiddling his thumbs. Finding Life was the priority, but Ludovica probably had that covered. He could afford to leave. Maybe he would head back home and tell Death what was going on, as Ludovica suggested.

"I suppose I don't mind," he murmured. "She's your daughter too, after all. I'll be back as soon as I've told Death what is going on, so be good without me, dears."

Focusing, he sent himself back to his own realm. Passing in-between worlds was easy enough with focus, and he was sure Shoe would be safe with her mother. In the meantime, he had an appointment with Death.

Alfonso began making his way towards where their goddess resided. He had good news for his old friend.

Image

Malin snorted, taking hold of Life's legs to keep her up on his back. A second passed; he moved his hands closer towards her knees out of nervousness. "He takes exclusively young souls," Malin began, already beginning to move further into the forest. He tried to ignore the fact that the Life--the entity who had created humanity--currently had her arms around his neck. "Get this--my mom is his daughter. It's so stupid, like, who even does that? I wouldn't bang my daughter. If I had one. I don't."

At this point, it was probably best to just stop talking completely and work more on getting Life to safety. Malin picked up the pace, settling into a comfortable jog. His face flushed, but he wasn't sure if it was because he was now jogging through the forest with a girl on his back or because he was incredibly close to his idol.

The latter was stupid, so he chose to attribute it to the former.

Image

So maybe picking a random direction and just guessing wasn't the best idea.

It was too late to turn around now; Bennie had gotten herself into this mess, and she would get herself out of it. Besides, if she went back now, she'd never hear the end of it from Alfonso. Surely she would find Life eventually, right?

Sighing, she kicked a rock by her feet and continued her stroll, occasionally calling Life's name.

"This would be way more fun if I had some company."

Ludovica waited, watching as her father passed into the other realm, and waited a few more seconds after that. Once she was sure he was gone, she grinned.

Energy coursed through her veins. She had nothing to hide from Shoe, and it wasn't as though there was a point in hiding her true demeanor from Life. And even if there was, she wasn't sure she'd be able to contain herself.

The creator of the world, of life, of nature and living beings...

In the end, both she and Life knew they were enemies, and Ludovica couldn't wait to rip her to pieces.

"Alright. Shoe, you said you can smell where Life is, right?" She asked, standing, slowly. She clenched her fists, her nails and teeth becoming sharper. "Lead me to her."

Image

"You're kidding," Life muttered, quietly. Admittedly, she was nervous about talking so closely to his ears. But then again, lately, she was nervous about everything. "This family is very messed up. And I don't even know the entire tree yet--I'm afraid to ask, actually. Your father is actually your mother's mother?"

She glanced over her shoulder, briefly, it being a nervous tick. She was accustomed to paranoia.

Kayin watched the butterfly, carefully.

Butterflies were such fragile creatures. Their wings tore so easily, and their lifespans were so short. They could fly, and they were beautiful, but they died so easily, didn't they?

He sighed, reaching his hand out. The butterfly, a beautiful blue, fluttered onto his hand. At that moment, he felt a connection to it--he felt its purity touch his heart, and so he gave it his heart in return.

It shuddered in the moonlight. The moment was suddenly gone, and the butterfly was flying away.

His eyes flashed, and in an instant, he'd caught the creature in his hand. As he brought it to his chest, he noted the softness of its wings--it was incredible, how they floated through the wind.

Wind and wings did sound similar, didn't they?

He tore the butterfly in two.

"This would be may more fun if I had some company."

Kayin snapped to attention. That couldn't be a human waiting for disease to strike, could it?

Without missing a beat, he skipped toward the voice. Already, his mind was buzzing. What disease would he infect this human with? How long would it take them to die? How much pain would they go through until they breathed their last breath?

"You requested company?" He asked, stepping up behind the woman. At first, he thought he recognized her, but assumed it was just his imagination.

Or was it? Something felt different about her soul. She was an entity.

I am a good wolf.

Shoe howled, sniffed the air briefly, and set off after Life.

I am a good daughter. I will help you tear her to pieces, Mommy.

Oh, how nice it was to get some time alone with her mother. Shoe had missed her.

She was picking up so many scents from different entities--how many of them were there now?--but Life's scent was distinct. Life's scent had something special about it, something unique. Something so eager to be snuffed out.

As Shoe continued tracking that scent, she noticed something. She could smell another entity with it.

She stopped walking for a moment and began pacing, sniffing the ground, the trees, the air, everything. She whimpered once, as if to alert Ludovica that her nose was picking up something unusual.

There are two. I'll rip them both up for you, Mommy. I am a good girl.

Image

Something about her breath near his ear made Malin shudder. He chose to believe it wasn't because Life herself was the one breathing on him.

"It's completely ridiculous," he admitted. "I can give you the whole crazy laydown if you want it. It's so stupid, everyone got crazy busy not long after--it wasn't long after you were sealed. Should I not talk about that? S-sorry."

Curse his awkwardness. Malin debated asking Xenos to seal him in a jar and break the jar.

"My dad is my father and my grandpa at the same time. He also did it with his mom and his grandma. He's so stupid. Family is supposed to be sacred, not some thing you make with whoever the h*ll you want. That's why creation is so beautiful, because humans actually value family and it's not just some stupid game to them--humans care, they don't yell at you for being in a 'phase' when it's obviously not just a 'phase', it's something I believe in, so shut up, Mom!"

Malin was very aware he'd started rambling. He cleared his throat.

"...Or whatever."

Image

"You requested company?"

The voice came from behind Bennie. She turned around, prepared to stop whoever it was from stopping her.

She found her son.

Or at least, she thought it was her son. He looked vaguely familiar, and she was sure she'd felt this kind of soul before. She was sure it was him. This was...

"Kevin," Bennie declared, confident.

Ludovica halted. "What's wrong? Why'd you stop?"

She paused, frowning.

"You didn't lose her scent, did you? No, no. I don't think you did. D*mmit, if only I could talk to you, I--..." She bit her lip. "Is it something you're smelling?"

She paused again.

"She's not with someone else, is she? She couldn't be. That's impossible."

Image

"I honestly don't care," Life admitted, careful not to sigh so close to his ear. "Talk about it all you want. Whether I like it or not, I'm sure that's going to be the main topic in every conversation I have now."

She glanced over her shoulder again, just in case. No one was there. Perhaps it was just all in her head.

"It's--honestly, it's refreshing to talk to someone who actually gets it," she said, a mix of disbelief and elation still flowing through her. "Even now, in this moment, I'm still doubting you do. Not that I'm doubting your understanding, I just--I guess part of me still thinks I'm all alone. That this is a trick. But if it was, you would've taken my soul already, so..."

Life shrugged.

"I don't really know how to feel anymore, to be honest. I've spent too many centuries wandering aimlessly that I almost lost sight of everything, if that makes any sense. It probably doesn't. Sorry. I'm getting carried away. I should just stop talking."

Image

Kevin.

It had only taken a moment for Kayin to realize he was talking to his mother, and that confirmed it.

You can't even remember my name.

"Kayin," he muttered, the pep in his step suddenly gone. He didn't know why he was surprised. This was normal--this was something he accepted as reality a long time ago. Or did he really accept it? "What are you doing here, mother?"

Shoe nodded her head vigorously, digging at the dirt. She drew two scratch marks, then looked up at Ludovica expectantly.

Two. I smell two entities. She's with someone. Am I a good girl, Mommy?

She trotted in place, eager to continue the fight and yet nervous of who she would find. Had Xenos come down from the realm? Was Niven around? It was hard to tell.

Still, whoever it was, Shoe was sure. They were dead meat.

Image

Malin let out a dry laugh. "That must have sucked. Geez, you have no idea how long I've been looking for you--n-not because I wanted your soul or whatever, I just wanted to meet you. I know how it feels to live for centuries believing no one understands you. No one understands me either."

It would have been entirely true if not for the girl riding on his back. Nervous, Malin added, "Except you, of course. 'Cause you made this planet and stuff. W-whatever, you know what I mean. The flowers, and the animals, and the people. ...And all those things are dying without you. Because you're stuck here. Gosh, the others are so stupid. I can't believe they want to keep you here. I don't blame you for being cautious, you've got a lot of enemies."

The anger he felt towards the rest of his family had pushed him into a full-on sprint, but he didn't even seem to notice. He did notice his hands gripping Life's legs more firmly, but he decided not to focus on that.

Image

Kayin. That was right. Bennie had forgotten his name, but that wasn't really her fault--she had a lot on her mind.

"I'm looking for your...um, father?" Bennie shrugged. "Life. She's in a girl's body now, a really cute one. Have you seen a tiny Asian cutie around here?"

It was a long shot, but maybe Kayin had seen something.

Image

Alfonso stepped into a familiar realm on his way to Death's throne.

Inside, three familiar faces sat. Alfonso recognized his father Xenos first; the blond entity sat with the same wide grin on his face he always had.

Beside him were Alfonso's other son, and Ludovica's other daughter. Alfonso dipped his head to them.

A passing soul was randomly sealed into a ring by Xenos, who slipped the ring onto one finger. Alfonso shuddered; the way Xenos could just casually seal up a human soul without a hint of hesitation--even within another entity's realm--always terrified him.

"What's going on here?" he asked.

"Family meeting," Ludovica's daughter muttered, plucking the petals off of a daisy. "I'm sick of this already, can I go back yet?"

"Stay and enjoy the company, little Alfie," Xenos hissed, laughing as he turned the ring over in his hands. "It's been aaaaaages since I saw ya!"

That was intentional. Alfonso avoided saying it out loud. Instead, he asked, "Is Death in her room?"

"Death, Life, Maria. Death, Life, Maria." Xenos repeated the mantra, tossing his ring up into the air and catching it. Alfonso avoided eye (bang?) contact.

"I don't even care," Ludovica's daughter sighed.

Niven was Alfonso's last hope. He looked over at his son, internally begging for a real answer.

Ludovica hissed. "There's someone else with her? That's... d*mmit, that complicates things."

She bit the inside of her cheek, beginning to pace. Whoever it was, it couldn't be good news. Of course, she could always cling to hope out of chance it was Ingris, but she doubted it. Ingris never really visited the human realm, and she'd get too bored too quickly.

"Whatever. We can take them, right? You and I?" With Shoe, Ludovica somehow felt stronger. With any of her children, Ludovica felt stronger. "And for all we know, they're on our side anyway. There's nothing to worry about, not really. Let's go."

Image

Life laughed, somewhat bitterly. "I do have a lot of enemies, don't I?"

She closed her eyes, shivering. Night was cold, and often lonely. This night was still cold, but it felt different somehow. Considering everything that had just went down, that it felt different wasn't surprising, but she wasn't sure whether or not it was comforting.

"Would you think it was silly if I told you I never saw it coming?" She asked, rather suddenly. "I always thought it was silly, thinking back on it. I mean, I know Death and I never really got along, but I never thought---well. I guess I was just too caught up in myself at the time to see anything coming."

She paused, feeling awkward again. "Nevermind. I apologize, that was a stupid question. Not being around entities for so long, I've thought about a lot of things, and I... I'm thinking out loud, now that there's someone to actually talk to. Sorry."

Image

Kayin blinked.

"Wait, you--you didn't find him--her--did you?" He asked, completely taken off-guard. She'd found Life. Had she? Something was wrong, clearly, since she was asking him where Life was. "When? H-how?"

The boy's mind was racing. He was starting to worry about so many different things.

If you found him, why didn't you tell me? Were you ever going to tell me?

Image

Niven stared at the ring Xenos so carelessly played with, feeling the suffocation and fear of the soul inside.

He listened half-heartedly as the others talked, only taking in half of what they said. In reality, it didn't really matter, and Niven didn't really care. There was no point in paying attention.

But all of the sudden, Niven felt his father's eyes on him, and he looked at the man, eyes askew. "Mother... mother's in her room. Where else would she be? She's too much of a recluse to go anywhere else."

We can take them.

Whoever it was, Shoe felt confident she and her mother could take care of them. Growling, she lowered herself to a hunting crouch and began to slink forwards, sniffing at the earth.

Shoe wasn't much use to her family as a wolf, but what she could do, she would do with pride.

Image

Malin rolled his eyes, his annoyance at his family only growing as Life continued talking. What was wrong with these people that they would turn their back on one of the first entities? Why seal Life and none of her followers? Why seal Life and not Maria, who was keeping so many souls in the in-between with her? Why seal Life and not Malin?

"You can keep talking," he insisted. "I don't mind. Your voice is nice to listen to."

What was it about talking to Life that made Malin sound so stupid? He continued hastily to cover his clumsy compliment.

"I wouldn't have seen it coming either if I were you. You're so essential to the workings of this planet, why would they ever want to get rid of you? Because of freakin' jealousy? It's so stupid, you deserve to be treated better than that--"

He was cut off when his pounding feet slipped on a pine cone, and Malin went sprawling face-first onto the ground. Thankfully, his body had cushioned Life from too bad of an injury, but landing on Malin's somewhat muscular body probably wasn't much better. He mumbled an apology.

"It's getting dark. Didn't even see the stupid thing." Malin turned his head, resting his cheek on the grass. "I guess this is comfortable. The nearest village shouldn't be too far. I can take you there and watch over you while you sleep. ...N-not like, actually watching you sleep. Just, you sleep, and I'll watch out for other entities like my stupid parents."

Image

"Oh, right." Bennie laughed, oblivious to Kayin's worry. "Yeah, I ran into her a bit earlier. We were supposed to meet somewhere after I finished dealing with Alfie and company, but Shoe ate the bread crumbs she left me so now I have no idea where she is. I was hopin' you could help."

She began to walk again, only half checking to see if Kayin followed. Finding Life was her number one priority at the moment.

Image

"I see." That made Alfonso's job quite a bit easier. His heart swelled with pride for a moment, and, wanting to share his victory, he announced, "Shoe and I ran into Life today."

"Life, Death, Maria," Xenos chanted.

Ingris just rolled her eyes.

Alfonso wilted. Clearly this was a victory he could only share with Death. Craving approval, he looked longingly at Niven once more.

We can take anything, Ludovica thought to herself, confidently.

She followed Shoe. Again, that eagerness to kill swirled inside of her, and she began to grow more and more excited. Whoever was with Life, she and Shoe would demolish, regardless of their side.

In the long run, Ludovica didn't care about the others. Apart from her children, she wanted them all to die along with the humans. She would see that to the end, and she'd revel in the joy of seeing everything burn.

Image

"...It's so stupid, you deserve to be treated better than that--"

Life cried out, tumbling onto the ground alongside Malin. Admittedly, falling partly on him had softened the fall a bit, but not by much. He mumbled something of an apology and out of habit, she apologized as well, but she wasn't sure what for. She quickly rolled off of him and stood, dusting her clothes off, and glancing behind them once more.

Forests were beautiful, but they were unnerving at night. The slight fog, the darkness, the constant rustling of branches and leaves...

She shuddered, both from the cold and the idea of being out at night. She missed her blanket and her winter clothes. It was then she remembered the scarf she had inside of her bag. Frowning just slightly, she fished it out and wrapped it around her neck. It was cozy.

"Taking refuge in a village is probably our safest bet," Life admitted, pulling her hair out from under the scarf, "but I worry about what will happen to the village if an entity finds us there. I've already doomed everything by getting myself sealed; I-I don't want to do any more harm to anyone else."

Admittedly, she'd been hesitant in giving Bennie the map of the one village in the first place, but it was the only "bread crumb" she could leave that Bennie and only Bennie would have. Anything else would've hinted the other entities in on where she was.

And the village was nearly abandoned, anyway. Life could've come up with some way to shoo the other people out of there before Bennie or any other entities followed her there.

Image

"Well, I haven't seen her--him?--but I can look," Kayin said, quickly. "What did you say she looked like? Wh-where are you going?"

Leaving again?

"Wait, I can help--d-don't leave. What do you mean, Shoe ate the bread crumbs? You ran into Uncle Alfonso and company--who else does that entail? What happened? Will you tell me what's going on, please?"

Image

Niven looked at his father, not sure what the man was expecting.

He ran into Life. Somehow, the boy didn't care one bit. In complete honesty, he'd stopped caring a long, long time ago. Well, that wasn't completely true, was it?

He couldn't tell anymore.

"What?" Niven stared at Alfonso with empty eyes, frowning. "Are you expecting me to throw confetti or something? I don't have confetti just lying around, father."

The air was cool. Shoe's eyes struggled to make out shapes in the darkness, but movement kept catching her gaze. How far away was Life now?

She sniffed. The scent felt far. Life had been running at a full sprint, so that made sense. Still, if Shoe and Ludovica didn't run too, they'd probably lose her.

Howling, Shoe began to jog, hoping Ludovica would get the message that she wanted to go faster.

Image

"Sh*t. That's true."

The last thing Malin wanted was to put humanity in danger. Sure there weren't many people there, but there were enough. If they stayed in the forest, the anger would increase; his stupid mom would have access to all the wild animals her blackened heart desired.

Malin would figure something out. He was an entity with full range of his powers, after all. And now that he'd found Life, he wouldn't let anything happen to her.

"I'll take care of that," Malin promised. "Shoe can track you by the scent of your soul, so all we need is to find a soul whose scent overpowers yours. I wonder if rolling in mud covers the scent of a soul. Crap, this is so stupid. Forget it, I'll protect you somehow. I'm an entity too. I can do something."

He stood, brushing the dirt off of his robe. Life probably had a decent amount of energy by now (and Malin himself was getting rather tired), but he still wanted to carry her, for some stupid reason. He crouched again, glancing at Life.

Image

Bennie laughed, holding back a hand for Kayin. "Relax, kiddo. Everything's fine. Alfie was with Shoe and Ludo, and they're all after Life. But I can't let them find her. I have to find her first so I can protect her from those stupid maniacs. You'll probably just slow me down, so you can head home if you want."

Finding Life again was the priority. It mattered not what was going on with Kayin, or with anyone else. What mattered was finding Life and making sure no one ever hurt her again.

Image

Of course none of them cared. Alfonso sighed. Surely Maria would want to know about Life being found. And if he happened to run into Cherry Blossom, it was likely she would want to know her father was back too. But to this group, his discovery meant nothing.

"Never mind. I'll tell Death. She'll be proud of my discovery." Why did everyone treat Alfonso like a weakling? Here he was making the find of the century and no one even cared. Not even his son or his father.

"Stop moping, seriously," Ingris muttered."Just go find Death and tell someone who cares."

Right. Death. He had to find Death.

"It was lovely to check in," Alfonso said, mostly sarcastic. He began to head through the realm, ignoring the sounds of Xenos's cackling laughter behind him.

And people thought he was messed up.
