Jonathan Hunter

A rehabilitated child soldier and ex-convict with superhuman strength

0 · 156 views · located in Algatha Rehab Center

a character in “Supernatural Rehab”, as played by Loxley

Description

Image

A man in his early thirties, with dark, almost black hair, tanned skin, dark beard stubble, and amber eyes. Has a scar at the outer corner of his right eye. Usually wears black suits with Henley shirts or T-shirts. He's got a muscular, though wiry, slender body with several prison tattoos of obscure origin, as well as various scars hidden by his clothes, including one sometimes visible on his left forearm.

Personality

Hunter is a no-nonsense kind of guy. He's a loner with a sordid past that he has (for the most part) left behind him. He seems bitter to some, and he's blunt when he's confronting someone, but he's a mentor because he truly wants to help others. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from his past, which could just as well be another life entirely. Some of the other mentors consider him a bit of a thug, mostly because of his appearance, but those who actually get to know him learn quickly that he is not - just a little rough around the edges.

Equipment

Abilities:

Hunter has only one ability, which is supernatural strength. He has the strength of probably fifteen strong men, though nobody has ever measured the strength. Throughout his youth he had trouble in part because of his inability to control his strength. In time he learnt to do so. In time, this led him to become a mentor at the Algatha Supernatural Rehabilitation Center.

History

Jonathan Hunter was born in Walvis Bay, Namibia in times of war. He was kidnapped, and drafted as a child soldier, one of a miniscule number of white child soldiers, as a boy. He spent several years as a drugged up boy soldier, killing for causes he knew nothing of. The Red Cross rescued him from this hell, but not before it could scar him mentally. At the time, his supernatural strength had not yet manifested itself. He was placed in an orphanage, where he spent his youth fighting other young boys.

Until one day, when first his strength manifested itself in a fight with the head bully of the orphanage. The boy was badly mutilated by his punches, and Hunter was thrown out of the orphanage and put in juvenile hall. There, the trend continued, as he got into fight after fight with others, thanks to his smart mouth, quick temper, and growing realization of his own supernatural strength. He became the pack leader, even though he had no interest in it. People began to realize not to mess with the one they dubbed "Sledgehammer".

When he grew older and became an adult, Jonathan was transferred to the C Max maximum security prison to serve a prison sentence of three years for aggrevated assault carried out in Juvenile hall. After the three years had passed, however, he got out, having served his time. He was reformed after the harsh life in prison. He proved it by joining the Army and serving his country. When Hunter moved to the United States a few years later, to begin a new life far away from anyone who knew of his supernatural strength, he was offered a job with Algatha Supernatural Rehabilitation Center as a mentor.

It was his chance to truly start anew, and he took it.

So begins...

Jonathan woke up with a jerk. At first his fists were clenched, and his eyes darted around as if he was being attacked. But when he realized he was in his room, sleeping, he exhaled in relief. Another nightmare. They were getting more and more frequent again. He sighed as he got out of bed and entered the bathroom. He stared at himself in the mirror for a few moments - scars running in crisscross patterns on his upper body, each scar a memento from one bad experience or another. With a sigh, he splashed some water on his face before getting dressed.

Today he chose a dark suit with a navy blue, short-sleeved henley shirt. He scratched his dark beard stubble, but decided against shaving. After brushing his teeth, he put on his suit jacket, and stepped outside, into the corridor of the dormitory where the mentors and teachers lived. He suppressed a yawn as he made his way outside and towards the main building where he was going to hold therapy later.

"Good morning, Jonathan." He looked up to see one of the guards, a man named Barney.

"Barney." He said, bumping knuckles with the man's fist. The two were good friends, and usually went out for drinks on fridays.

"Listen, man, can you do me a favor? There's this kid in one of the restraint rooms. Spent the night there. Name's Ali, room 303. He's one of the werewolves. I hear he's going to therapy with you today. Could you let him out? You know I don't deal well with those feral types." Hunter nodded, patting him on the shoulder.

"Yeah, sure."

"I'll buy you a beer in return."

"Make it two." Hunter smirked as he left the man and headed inside the men's dormitories, and towards the restraint rooms. He could hear someone banging, and it was no surprise that the sound came from 303. He stopped by the door, unlocked it, and opened it, just enough that he could still block the door with his size, and keep it from being flung open with his strength. He found the young man, unsurprisingly, standing just inside.

"Good morning, Mr Wattson." He said in his rough, low voice. "C'mon. Time for breakfast."

Ali paused in his pacing and turned on his heel as the door clicked slowly and the door swung open, standing there was a man he looked a little older than Ali but he could never tell. He was taller too by a couple of inches, as well as being quite muscular sniffing quickly he tried to work out the man standing before him but it was hard.

" good morning, Mr Wattson...C'mon time for breakfast"

His voice was low so it sort of matched his tough looking exterior, huffing out a sharp intake of breath Ali stepped forward his eyes set on the man in front of him, a deep growl circled in his throat his fists clenched tightly . Pausing briefly to turn his head to him and he spoke only in a few words his head inclining forward and tilting to the side, like a dog " it's Ali... right?!" His face showed hardly any emotion. Walking to stand next he as he waited to see the direction he would be going in. He wasn't sure wether this man would stay with him all day and follow his every move.

Jonathan ignored the growl, and didn't answer Ali's questions with anything but a nod. He stepped out of the way and made a gesture with his arm for Ali to get out. After closing the cell behind him, he led the young werewolf through the dormitories and into the main building. As it was breakfast he took him to the dining hall, where several other people had already gathered despite the early hour, including one of the other mentors, Rose Fieldings.

"Go get some food." Hunter told Ali. He watched the werewolf get in line for food, and soon after, joined him himself. Once they had food, he made sure to sit down at an empty table not too far from where the werewolf was, so that he could keep an eye on him. He wasn't afraid that the young man would go berserk or anything like it, but he wanted to make sure he didn't get into any fights. These young supernaturals were very emotional, and often got into fights needlessly. Especially the vampires and the werewolves.

Miss Fieldings caught everybody's attention by informing them of the therapy session at ten. Hunter finished his food, and placed an unlit cigarette in his mouth. He wanted a smoke, but there was no smoking in the cafeteria. He sighed. Later, he would join Miss Fieldings at the therapy session to observe. He was still relatively new, and he had no classes at the time, so observing one of the therapy sessions sounded like a good idea.

The other mentors at the rehab mostly sat together. They had come to realize by now that Hunter didn't really like company, which was why he sat alone. Most of them respected it. He wasn't really hostile in any way, though his quiet nature gave the impression. He simply preferred to eat alone. But when it came to his "students", or whatever one was to call these kids, he was very serious. At least, very serious about keeping them out of trouble.

Ali walked slowly with the person who had come to claim him, he sniffed quickly at random intervals getting a feel for the place incase he had to run. Coming to the cafeteria he lined up for food as instructed he was hungry getting a pile of bacon and sausage he sat down and began to eat quickly the feeling of hunger slowly subsiding for the human side of Ali anyway.

He looked at a woman who was speaking about group therapy, he rolled his eyes and continued eating only really pausing to have a drink of water. He didn't want to go to group therapy it involved talking something that Ali didn't want to do, not because he was nervous but because he didn't want people to become to attached to him. Finishing the plate of food he stretched his arms and looked around the room watching everyone carefully growling lightly every now and then at he back of his throat.

Rose stood next to Jonathan as the wet-puppy-remark was uttered. She nodded her head slightly and released another one of her exhausted sighs. "Why can't they just get along. None of them are here voluntarily. And most of them did not choose to be what they are. If they keep this behaviour up, someone will have to intervene. But seeing as Ali is under your care, Mr. Hunter, perhaps it would be best if you spoke with them - maybe the group therapy session will be a suitable moment?"

And without awaiting his response, she turned around and slowly walked back to her table to finish her breakfast.

Jonathan listened quietly to Rose as she spoke. As always he didn't reply or respond much to her comments. That was his personality, after all, a man of few, or in best case scenario, no words. Then came the insulting remark to Ali by one of the other students. Miss Fieldings sighed. The only sign of his dislike, however, was a frown. As Miss Fieldings suggested he deal with it and left, he stood up, picked up his food tray, and walked out. He dropped it to the dish ladies on his way outside.

Once he got out into the cool morning air, he sat down on the stairs, and lit the cigarette. The morning air cleared his head. He closed his eyes for a moment, inhaling a fix of nicotine. He smoked in silence for several minutes. As an orphan raised in one of the shittiest orphanages in Nigeria, one where he had to beat the living crap out of other orphans to get them to leave him alone, he hated bullies, and he hated people looking down on others. More to the point, some of the youngsters in the rehab acted like stupid brats, and failed to see why they were there.

He let out a sigh, shaking his head. As he flicked away the cigarette and stood up, he watched it race all the way across the fifty meter courtyard at high speed, and slam into a tree on the other side. Then he turned around and stepped back inside, beginning to make his way back to the cafeteria. He stopped for a moment to take a look in the mirror, making sure his suit jacket was just right. Then he walked back into the cafeteria.

He expected Miss Fieldings to deal with most of the students, but most of the mentors were unwilling to deal with people like Ali - that was why they had security guards. Jonathan, however, was not, for obvious reasons. Seeing that he preferred silence himself, he saw no reason not to be Ali's helpful mentor once in a while. He approached the young man, and seeing that he had finished his food, said:

"Therapy, Mr Wattson. Bring the tray."

He walked with Ali the whole way to the dishing room, and then led him out towards the therapy room they were going to be in today. He placed another cigarette in his mouth, but didn't light it, just let it rest there as a reminder to him of what was waiting after the therapy session. He wasn't too fond of those himself either, as he was well aware also the teenagers were not.

Ali's fists clenched tightly at the remarks that the others made about his condition. He began to growl but his anger was displaced by one of the mentors talking to him. That was a strange thing that happened when Ali was easily angered by comments he could be easily calmed down for a while at least but if the anger was built over time he could not be calmed so easily the wolf would often take over.

Ali rolled his eyes at being called " mr Wattson " again he stood up quickly the chair he was sitting on pushing back violently almost tipping over but righting itself quickly. Following closely his fists clenched and uncleched tightly he hated any comments about him being a werewolf it was always the case wherever he was people judging his condition and they were bound to have their throats ripped out.

Coming to the therapy room he sat down in a chair his hands clenching on the arms of the chair he glanced around the room then looked at the mentor. " call me Ali...." He spoke his eyes looking at the floor his fingers tapped the arm of the chair anxiously he didn't want the social confrontation of the therapy session people finding out about him and what had happend to him.

"Call me Ali." The werewolf that Jonathan had taken to the therapy room said suddenly. Jonathan looked up in surprise, the unlit cigarette still hanging in his mouth. He offered a quiet nod. "Jonathan." He said in reply, though as always, it was more of a muttering than saying it. He had leaned against the wall over by the windows, looking outside at the beautiful weather and the green lawns and trees outside. Most of the time, he liked it here. But today he had a pang, and for a moment, he missed the dusty golden brown fields of Transvaal, South Africa, where he had spent much of his younger life.

He sighed and looked back at the werewolf.
"Don't let 'em get to you." He said, suddenly, uncharacteristically wordy for once. "It's what they want."

Sinking back into silence, he looked up as the noise of "students" or inmates, or whatever they were, could be heard outside. Soon, the door opened and several of them began to filter into the therapy room. Jonathan didn't greet any of them. Instead he just watched them as they entered, remaining standing over by the wall with his arms crossed, and the unlit cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth.

They still had a few minutes more before the group therapy session would start, and Miss Fielding hadn't arrived yet. Jonathan's eyes drifted off into the distance outside, a distanced glimmer in his amber eyes as he thought about his home country once again. Sometimes he hated this place. Sometimes he felt like he'd been thrown into exile, albeit a self-imposed one. Sometimes, sometimes, he wanted nothing more than to go home.

He heaved another sigh, clearing his mind of such thoughts, and looked back into the room where the students began to sit down.

Tesella

Tes's ears perked at the words: "Don't let 'em get to you. It's what they want." A guy named Jonathan said to the wolf he was escorting. Tes smiled and shut her book. Maybe all of them weren't self centered jerks after all...She looked at them for a moment before she moved chairs to sit next to them. Time to make some friends. She stuck a long slim fingered hand out for one of them to shake as she put on a friendly smile.

"Hi i'm Tesella...." she said

Jonathan listened in silence as the therapy session began with Miss Fieldings' entrance, and comments from some of the students. Some of them were stupid brats that needed a wake-up call. Others were seemingly there to learn and grow from the experience. Even Ali, the werewolf, seemed to have already gained something from the rehab, as Hunter caught him actually shaking hands with the girl called Tess. He didn't show it with a single muscle in his face, but there was satisfaction in him, seeing that the boy was learning to function with other teenagers in a normal environment, and not as a werewolf.

Intent on staying in the background and not interrupting Miss fieldings' therapy, Hunter remained quietly standing by the window, content for now with listening and watching as the therapy went on.

Khael

"Can I be excused?" said Collin, before jumping up and leaving.

Khael watched Collin leave and pouted. It hadn't quite produced the effect she had wanted. But she did know that he obviously had very little self control and that could still be fun if she could get him to not just run off whenever the smell was too much. She tapped a nail against her leg and sighed lightly. She looked around at everyone as they spoke. Already she was bored. She was turning her head to look at whoever was speaking but she wasn't hearing what was being said. She even ignored the mentor. She tapped her foot on the floor.

She shifted. Then she watched Rayen. The mentor had spoken to her, right? She couldn't recall. Khael suddenly raised her hand.

"Hey, I think we should all leave!" she said brightly. "I've got better things to do." Her grin suggested that those 'better things' might not to apply to anyone laying on the other end of her amusement.

Jonathan watched as the vampire student suddenly stood up, excused himself and rushed out of the room. He frowned. Chattering commenced, and Miss Fieldings confronted one of the girls on, apparently, having caused Collin's hasty departure. There was more happening than met the eye, and Jonathan felt handicapped with no superpowers other than his strength. He gazed out the window for a moment. It seemed as if Miss Fieldings had things under control in there. Jonathan gave her a meaningful nod, as if saying, "I'll take care of it", and headed for the door to follow Collin.

As soon as he stepped out of the therapy room, he shook his head, rubbing his forehead. They were just kids after all. Kids with superpowers. And some of them still acted like it. He remembered when he had been like them - worse, even. Not everybody had come out unscathed from his own youthful escapades. The mental image of a boy so badly beaten he had to go into intensive care, popped up in his head. He had been a violent boy back then - a violent boy with dangerous powers. He had learnt to master and control the power - and his own temperament - by himself, to be able to survive, but it hadn't been easy. That was why these young people were at the rehab to learn the same thing.

They had to be able to control their powers, or the society out there would put them down like mad dogs.

He walked along the corridor, hands in his pockets, searching for the young vampire. His feet in time led him onto an intercepting course with the boy, who seemed to be on his way to the Headmaster's Office, and he nodded just once to him in greeting, as their eyes met.

"You okay?"

Collin's head snapped over to where the voice had come from

"You okay?" The words came out of the man's mouth yet the words didnt register with Collin at first.

The man's beating pulse hypnotized Collin, unaware of what he was doing he slowly walked over to the man. The burning in his throat increasing with every step. His eyes did not meet with the man's only his neck pulse. Just a little bite won't hurt him, he won't even feel it. The thoughts filled his head as got closer.

Collin stopped abruptly a few feet away from Jonathan.

"I-I'm sor..sorry Mr.Hunter..uh..what did you ask." Collin couldn't bring himself to looks at Jonathan, too ashamed at what he had been thinking.

Jonathan could feel the boy's bloodthirst. On the outside he seemed relaxed, but in truth every muscle in his body was ready for an attack. Then, the boy suddenly regained his composure, and mumbled: "I-I'm sor..sorry Mr.Hunter..uh..what did you ask." Jonathan relaxed, and offered a hint of the tiniest, wry smile.

"Good job." He said. In a sudden act of friendliness, he patted the young man on the shoulder. "This place is no prison. No rehabilitation center...not to get you off drugs or alcohol. It's a school. Everyone here has powers. Dangerous and difficult to control. Yours is bloodthirst." He ignored the no-smoking signs on the walls, and suddenly brought out a lighter, lighting the cigarette that had been resting in his mouth for a while. He took a breath on it, and then added thoughtfully:

"You learn to control, suppress, hide the bloodthirst." He frowned, adding: "You suppressed it here, just now. That's a big step. A good step. Next time, you'll suppress it quicker. One day, nobody will be able to tell at all. But don't be ashamed of it. This is why you're here. Everybody here has a power. It's not some shameful secret you need to hide. It's a power, not weakness. Strength." He added with a wry smile.

He took a few quick breaths on the cigarette before he tossed it to the ground and stepped on it, looking back at Collin as he asked: "Do you want to go back? Or do you want to go see the headmaster?"

Rose sighed and stood up. She very well understood she would get nowhere with her current approach. And thus she decided to try another shift of tactics. She walked over to one of the windows, seemingly looking outside but still seeing her class through the reflection.

"I know none of you are here voluntarily, but you seem to misread our intentions. Or my intentions, at the very least. I am not here to play the warden of a high-security prison. I do not want to keep you prisoner. I still think of the name of this institution as being an ill choice. "Rehab Center" makes it sounds as if it is a clinic. It isn't. It's a school. We are here to help you control your powers, but can only do so if you let us."

She turned around and looked at the Khael.

"You, Miss Thera. You do not want to be here. You long back to your past situation. But, since you are here now, you decided to make the best of it by having fun, even if it makes other peoples lives miserable. And you, Miss Tiden, you believe you have never had anything, and you abhor pity. I am not here to pity you, I am here to help."

Her gaze turned a little darker while talking, and the temperature in the room turned cold.

"You are not the only ones who despise being here. But the thought that I might help you in finding your purpose in life makes it worthwhile. I already offered my help to Tessela and Rayen, so that they may master their abilities. I am willing to help any single one of you, as is Mr. Hunter. You need only ask."

Her gaze turned a little friendlier again now that she was done giving her speech, and gradually the temperature returned to normal as well. "That is all for today's session. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to come to me."

Rose then sat down at the desk and took her notebook, ignoring the students and allowing them to go about their own business.

Jonathan nodded and watched as Collin wandered off, a hint of a smile on his lips for once. A good kid, that one. Hopefully they would be able to help him. It was moments like this that reminded Jonathan why he had left South Africa to work here. He shook his head with a slight chuckle, and made his way towards the exit. It was a nice day outside, and he decided he'd catch a few minutes of rays before going inside again for his next class, or whatever else was on his schedule.

Outside, a couple of the students from therapy were walking around. Jonathan offered them a nod before he sat down on the stairs, leaning his back against the wall. He took a deep breath of fresh air, and at the same time tossed the burnt out cigarette away. Then he closed his eyes, and exhaled.

His mind grew cloudy, and soon, he drifted off into sleep, unintentionally so, guided into it by the warmth of the sun's rays on his face...

Rose couldn't quite find any rest in her room. She got up, scribbled a note reading she could be found in the gardens, and started walking. She figured the young witches would be able to find her outside when the time was ready. As she walked through the corridors, the other mentors looked at her with a strange glimmer in their eyes, as if they knew she planned to teach magic to students. Well, even if they did know, they couldn't do anything to stop her. Rose prouded herself on being one of the most powerful mentors in the center. She just hoped that was actually true.

Once outside, she sat down on a bench from where she could oversee the grounds. A young student in a tree, a mentor napping on the stairs, little groups of students sitting in the grass with their books, mentors overseeing everything. And sitting there, her mind finally grew calm.
