History
(I left out a lot on purpose.)

Advar is the only child to Höðr, a Nordic God who was not very well known. He was killed by the child of Odin and the giantess Rindr, Váli. Just like his father, Advar was born blind, but as he was half-mortal, he was not allowed amongst the gods so had to learn to control his powers and live with his disability. Advar was born in a small Norwegian village where snow and ice where common, and you were lucky to see any green. Advar was always... different compared to the other boys in the village, and it was not just because he was blind. He had always been more in.. tune with the wild, and on his tenth birthday, he was banished from his village along with his mother for accidentally burning another child who was bullying him... the boy did not survive.

Advar's mother, Gwen, was overprotective of her blind son as they traveled from village to village. How could she tell him that he was the son of a god? How could she explain his magical powers? It ate away at her... and on her deathbed, she told Advar of his origin, that he was the son of a dead god. Advar had always hated his disability, and now he had no one... He hated his weakness, hated that he needed people to help him. Why did someone like him even deserve to live? He did not want to be treated like an old man by other people, asked if he needed help, and then quickly abandoned when things got bad, so he went to master his powers alone in the Scandinavian forest far away from others. Years of isolation had allowed Advar to increase his powers over the elements, but also, increase his ability to move around despite not being able to see. He could hear with amazing acuteness, he could feel the way different way the air brushed against his skin as things moved past him... he could taste the changes in the air... and for a two hundred years, Advar wandered the forest.

He returned from the forest to find a changed world... a world he could not understand, but people had not changed. Every town people would ask him if he needed help, and every time he would rudely tell them off, his time alone in the forest making him blunt and coarse with others... and once more, Advar took to wandering, but this time he wandered this new world...

Eventually, due to his expertise in Elemental magic, he was invited to teach at an Academy with people like himself.

So begins...

Advar let the loosely held cane rest against the floor only for a few moments as he tapped it left and right catching the sounds that it made ensuring he was not about to step off a ledge or miss a step. A few of the other new teachers had offered him help, but with a raised hand and a forced polite decline, he rejected their offers. He was not sure what time it was, but it seemed they were here before the students as if they weren't he would be able to hear them prattling and chatting. The normal click as thumbs pressed against the buttons of their phones trying in vain to hide them in their pockets. Would they be allowed to have their phones in this school? Well, he was not sure, but if a teenager found playing with fire to be boring enough that they had to text, he was doing a terrible job.

The sounds of clomping feet all around him was almost deafening, he had no idea of the layout of the school and would most likely have to spend the first few months counting the steps from room to room until he could navigate the school. He was not even sure where they were going... and his lack of vision was not helping, so despite wanting to lay against a tree and take a nice soothing nap, he had to follow the crowd of new teachers feeling much like the common cattle.

"And she is just the most amazing little girl in the world, did I tell you about.." The woman started again, and Advar gave yet another polite smile, "Yes you did. The one where the cat jumped on her and she shrieked?" He could not really see the woman's physical features, but the intake of breath let him know she was happy was she surprised he was paying attention? Sure, listening to this woman prattle on about her kids for the last half hour was nor the most enjoyable thing he could be doing, but he needed her to show him around the school. He was counting his steps as she lead him classroom to classroom, and since she was doing this for him, the least he could do was pretend to be interested in her life and half listen to her stories.

"Would you like to see a picture?" The woman said reaching into her purse and pulling out her wallet pulling out the picture of her daughter, and before truly thinking about what she was doing stuck it out for him to see. Advar could not help the chuckles that escaped his chest, "Oh yes, she has your eyes." He quipped. He could not see her, but the woman was bright red with embarrassment realizing what she had done, "Oh, that was so dumb. I am sorry about that." Advar held up his free hand, "It alright, it happens more often then you would think." Well, he was just being polite, honestly, this was the first time that had happened. Although he had been invited to watch a movie once which was kind of funny.

The woman fell into an embarrassed silence as she walked out the doors and into the courtyard with the soft sound of a cane tapping against the concrete behind her. 54...55...56 The numbers counted off in his head. This was going to be a long first few months.

"And I am pretty sure this is the main gate." The woman said sounding either awed at the size of this gate, or she was simply an excitable lady. Advar tapped his cane against the gate listening as the metallic ping that erupted from it. It must have been rather large and solid. Reaching forward he gently let his hand roam the bars of the gate, he let his thoughts wander and spoke aloud, more to hear himself speak then get an answer, "Do you think this gate was built to keep people out? Or keep us in?"

He could almost hear the woman trying to make sense of what he said. Sure it must sound rather paranoid and foolish, but honestly, Advar was unsure why there was a need for such a gate. Was someone afraid of being attacked? What could someone steal that would be so important or deadly? And why, if that is the case, would someone keep something like that in a school for kids? Perhaps the gate was an attempt to keep the school, and its residents secluded from the world. Advar never liked doors nor walls. He had always wandered in a world that was far too large for him to ever truly grasp. "Why would they lock us in here?" The woman asked curiously, Advar shook his head, "I am probably just being a paranoid old man."

"You can't be that old, I bet you are barely over twenty." She said sounding rather insulted. Advar turned his head towards the woman and smiled, "Many in this school are older then they look, but do not worry, many of them act far younger then they are." He could hear the soft prattle on concrete as she moved foot to foot obviously wanting to go somewhere else. "You can go if you want." Advar said, "I know how to get back."

The woman opened her mouth to speak, "B-bu.." Advar held up his hand, "84 steps straight back, 34 steps to the left, 52 steps to the right, 72 steps straight. It will get me back to the teachers door. I know how to get to my room, the main hall, and the gate. I will be fine. Thank you for taking the time to walk me around."

"Your welcome..." She said softly before walking away. Advar waited until her footsteps were merely echoes, before sitting down and resting his back against the gate letting his cane rest against his knees. The students would be here soon enough, and he wanted to hear them and listen to what kind of people they were before they got informed of how the school would go and started to put on their mask for their friends and classmates.

Advar could smell the build up of moisture in the air, was it going to rain? Well, wouldn't that put a damper on the... initiation? Before he could truly formulate his thoughts on the weather, he heard the sound of footsteps smacking against cobblestone behind him. A precise walk.. with equal measured steps. Someone was either stiff, or was obsessively compulsive. He did not bother to turn around and face the gate itself as looking through the bars would really do him no favor, and he was sure the person would speak up if he needed something. Well, it was a pleasant day, and the floor of the ground was only mildly uncomfortable, and so he went back to his thoughts about the weather. Of course, he could have used magic to determine if it truly was going to rain, or even force it to rain if he wished, but where was the fun in that? He thought people were too... jumpy with their magic as if everyone in the world was determined to try and impress one another.

Another sound caught his attention. Someone else was approaching the first person, who had not moved since. He listened as she spoke to him introducing herself, and it was indeed a woman by her voice. Once more he was tempted to stand, but decided against it. He would most likely not get to enjoy his solitude for awhile, so it was best to enjoy it as much as possible now... that was until he heard the barking of a gun. Going from the sound, it was directly ahead at an elevated level, no doubt coming from a window in the school. What were they shooting? And then he felt the small concentrated bolt of magic pass overhead and slam into the gate just behind him. It gave Advar just enough time to have one thought pass through his mind Really? Really!?

The door slammed open and with the sudden loss of a back support, Advar felt himself falling backwards and only came to a stop when the back of his head smacked against the cobblestone. Oddly enough, the next thought was not about pain, but about the thought he had moments before, about people using magic in pointless ways.. this was such a way. Would it have killed them to simply walk to the blasted gate and open it instead of shooting it like a half-baked moron? Would walking truly take that much time and energy? Advar rubbed the back of his head, letting out a soft "Ow..."
