I've experienced this a few times during beta testing. It was a «Teleport» initiated by an item. I didn't have the prerequisite item nor did I shout the proper command. Did the operators initiate a forced teleport? If so, why didn't they even inform us? As my thoughts raced, the light around me pulsed stronger and darkness overtook me. As the blue light faded, my surroundings became clear again. However, this wasn't the plains lit with the sunset anymore. A large road paved with stone. Medieval streets surrounded by streetlamps and the huge palace radiating a dark light a fair distance away up ahead. This was the starting point, the central plaza of the «Starting City». I looked at Cline who had his mouth wide open next to me.

Then at the bustling layers of people that surrounded the two of us. Looking at the bunch of stunningly beautiful people with a variety of equipment and different hair colors, they were no doubt other players like me. There were about a few thousand—ten thousand people here.

It was likely that everyone who was logged on right now had been forcefully transported to the central plaza. For a few seconds, everyone just looked around with out a word. Then a few mumbles and mutters could be heard here and there; it started to get louder. "What's happening?" "Can we log out now?" "Can't they take care of it quickly?" Comments like these could be heard from time to time.

As the players started to get more annoyed, shouts like "Is this a joke?" and "Get the hell out here, GMs!" could be heard. Then suddenly. Somebody raised his voice above all these comments and shouted. "Ah...look above!" Cline and I almost automatically turned our eyes upward and looked.

There, a strange sight greeted us. The bottom surface of the second floor, one hundred meters up in the air, was checkered in red. When I looked closely, I could make out that they were made up of two phrases crisscrossing each other. The word that was written in red was [Warning] and the other [System Announcement]. I was surprised for a moment but then thought Oh, the operator's going to begin informing us now and loosened my shoulders a little bit.

The chatter died down in the plaza and you could feel everyone waiting to hear what was going to be said. However, what happened next wasn't what I had expected. From the middle of the pattern, a liquid similar to blood started oozing down slowly. It came down at a rate that almost emphasized how viscid it was; but it didn't fall down; instead, it started morphing into another shape. What appeared was a twenty meter tall man with a hooded robe draped around him. No, that wasn't exactly right. From where we were looking, we could easily see into the hood—there was no face.

It was absolutely empty. We could clearly see the inner cloth and the green embroidery inside of the hood. It was the same inside the robe; all we could see inside the rim were shadows. I've seen the actual robe before. It was the clothes that the employees who had been working as GMs during the beta test had always worn.

But then the male GMs had had a face like an old sorcerer with a long beard and the females had had an avatar of a bespectacled girl. They might have used the robe due to lack of time to prepare a proper avatar, but the empty space beneath the hood gave me an unexplainable feeling of anxiety. The countless players around me must have felt the same. "Is that a GM?" "Why doesn't it have a face?"

Numerous whispers like these could be heard. Then the right hand of the huge robe moved as if to silence them. A pure white glove appeared from the folds of the long sleeve. But this sleeve, like the rest of the robe, wasn't connected to any sort of body. Then the left arm slowly lifted upwards, too. Then with its two empty gloves spread out in front of ten thousand players, the faceless person opened his mouth—no, it felt like it did.

Then a low and calm voice of a male resonated from high up in the air. 'Players, I welcome you all to my world.' I couldn't understand it right away. «My world»? If that red robe was a GM, it certainly had godlike powers in this world, enabling him to change the world at will, but why was he pointing that out now? Cline and I looked at each other dumbfounded. The anonymous red robe lowered its two arms and continued talking.

'I think that most of you have discovered the fact that the log out button has disappeared from the main menu. This is not a bug, it is all part of «Sword Art Online»'s system.' "Part of...the system?" Cline muttered, his voice breaking up. The announcement continued in its low voice as if to cover the sound. 'Until you get to the top of this castle, you cannot log out of your own free will.'

This castle? I couldn't understand this phrase at first. There's no castle in the «Starting City». Then the next thing that Kayaba said blew my confusion away. '...also, the discontinuation or dismantling of the NERvGear from the outside is strictly forbidden. If these things are attempted...' A moment of silence. The silence of ten thousand people was overwhelming. The next words came slowly. 'The signal sensors in your NERvGear will emit a strong electromagnetic pulse, destroying your brain and stopping all of your basic functions.'

Cline and I stared at each other for seconds in shock. It was as if my mind was refusing to believe what had just been said. But Kayaba's short statement pierced through my body with a ferocity that was both hard and dense. Destroy our brains. In other words, kill us. Any user that turned the NERvGear off or unlocked the clasp and took it off would be killed. That is what Kayaba had just stated. People in the crowd started muttering, but there was no one shouting or panicking. It was either that everyone, like me, couldn't understand it yet, or refused to.

I ran forward, just as i was about to question, the GM vanished, leaving 10,000 characters in despair.

"Dammit!!" Cline yelled as I began thinking 'why would a gm put us in that state of infancy were we know next to nothing about the game... does he truly want us to Live in this world? why would he do that?' Kirito shook his head "whats the use of thinking about it" I then sigh and grab Cline's arm and pull him through the blockade of people, all in different stages of despair. When we reached an ally I asked Cline "Cline come with me if we want to get to the top of the tower we should be moving more quickly in the next town there is a quest which can give us weapons to last through 5 floors" Cline looked taken back at my calm attitude "Kirito I.... can't, my friends are probably in shock in the main square I should go get them, is it possible for all of us to go?" he asked hopefully. I looked down not knowing what to say two people i could lead with confidence but 1-3 more and people can die easily then and that just can't happen now
Cline read my look "I thought so, do you want to come with us Kirito?" he questioned. I could get along with Cline easily but others....."no.." i manage to whisper, Cline looks sad as he says "well i guess I'll see you later Kirito, don't you die!" Cline waves in my direction and backs of toward the main sqaure. 'So begins the journey' I thought as i hit the path toward the next town.

Iris gripped her blades. She would need to get to the next town. This town is too populated and everyone will be out there on the boarders of this town. She quickly walked to the boarder. She'd done this before. She was a beta tester after all. She looked to her right as she saw a guy and his friend split up. Strangely enough, she knew the guy. Must be a fellow beta tester. She quickly walked up to his as she remembered his name.
"Hey, Kirito, it's not safe to go out alone. Want a partner?" She asked, her voice not showing any emotion. Strangely enough, she couldn't ever get any emotion in her voice when she was around strangers and for some reason, they labeled her "Cool" at her school with out even knowing her. Truth was, she was just really shy.

As Kirito was leaving the town he was in a near trance, thinking how he would advance through this world even in the beta test he had someone with him the whole time ' he probably didn't log on, he told me he was doing some sort of test....'. A rough quick voice broke that trance of his, he looked around and saw Iris to his right, she had probably asked a question and he was stupid enough to zone out during that time. Kirito knew if he walked through a field zoned out he would die "I'm an idiot" Iris looked at him confused. Iris then noticed that he would not answer her question so she asked again "want to partner up?" Kirito looked shocked that someone would ask to party with him. Kirito nodded and began to move toward the next village through the path he tested as a beta-tester.

Iris smiled slightly as she followed Kirito. It was nice to have a partner out here. Truth be told, she was scared but she'd never let herself show that emotion. She was going to be strong. She held the hilt of each sword as they were walking. She was ready for any kind of sneak attack. She knew things would be hectic and things could get out of hand at a moments notice. She'd have to be ready for anything. She also knew she would have to pull her weight in this group. There was no way she'd fall behind.

"Watch out Iris!!! Behind you!!!" I said that as i killed another Little Nepent which was about to harm Iris.
Image
"huahhhh.... finally finished getting 2 «Little Nepent's Ovule» which is a key quest to get better equipment for the both of us, thinking back me and Iris had an argument over which way to go. "We should go to Harunka village Kirito its better because we could get equipment there which could last us for about 6 floors before we would have to switch" she reasoned but I insisted "no, we should go and defeat this floor and move on to the next there's a better quest there which can give us even stronger equipment" She angrily said "Kirito this is not a game anymore we shouldn't be reckless, yes in the beta we defeated the first floor with a group of people with beginner equipment but how could we gather people if they are sitting on the ground in despair not even thinking of a way to get out?" I was taken aback at her reason and thought it over.

I nodded wordlessly and we began to move to Harunka village. When we arrived at Harunka village i thought with a sigh ' as expected not even 1 single person made it to this village at least' with another deep sigh i said "well lets get going!" we went to a deeper house within the village and walked in a young women came to us and said "Good evening, journeying warriors. You must be tired, I do wish to offer you some food, but I do not have any at the moment. All i can give is a single cup of water to each of you or so." in response i answered "that will be fine."

I sat down and signaled Iris to sit down too as the women went back to the pot. then the next part of the quest appeared. The steady sound of a child's coughing could soon be heard from the other side of the door to the next room. The missus's shoulders appeared to have fallen with despair. After having waited for another few seconds, a golden question mark finally lit up above the lady's head. The sign of a quest's activation. I called out without a moment's delay. "Is something troubling you?" "Actually, journeying swordsman, my daughter is stricken with a severe illness that is completely unfazed even when given medicine from the market and there is no other way to cure my daughter aside from making her drink medicine gotten from the ovules of the <<Little Nepent>> inhabiting the forest further to the west." I got up for the sake of setting the mood and cried out "leave it to me!!!!"- I took Iris's hand and rushed out the house.

Which brought us to now, avoiding the players that have finally made it to this village me and Iris entered the same house we took out our <<Little Nepent's Ovule>> and placed them in the pot the missus face lit up and she brought a set of twin swords for each of us. I responded with a "thank you" knowing the NPC would not register it. I sat there regardless of Iris's questioning over why we were still here and watched the missus prepare the cup filled with medicine. When she finished she went through the back door i subconsciously followed. When in the room the NPC closed the door and fed the drink to the other NPC called Agatha. Agatha rose from her bed I groaned seeing her face "......Uu...gh......" i thought sadly 'i want to see my sister.....' i sat down in a depressed state the NPC asked an innocent question toward me "what's wrong?" brother' i added subconsciously held my legs close and let out the tears i have been holding in since the beginning 'I want to see them!!!!'

Iris followed him into the room. She never liked being alone. Then, she saw Kirito look off as the NPC said "What's wrong?" To which he didn't answer. She walked over and saw him crying and sat down beside him as she gave him a slight hug.
"Don't worry... We'll make it out of this game. Just you wait." Her voice had more emotion in it since she's gotten more used to Kirito. She wasn't that emotionless person anymore. She quickly thought of her brother which she immediately had to bite her lip. One of them had to be strong and she wasn't going to break.

Kirito woke up with his arms hugging his knees for a moment he had forgot everything but he slowly began to remember the situation 'last time i was a awake i cried....' I shook my head looked around to get a feeling for the place i walked outside the house and sat down looking at the endless sky above wondering how could something generated by a computer be this big. i continued to stare up at the sky and noticed a blinking light "wha...?" i got up and reached up like i could grab it suddenly a shock ran through my body and i heard a soft little voice in my head "Kirito, remember your not alone" i looked around in shock and whispered "who are you?" but the voice did not answer again.

Kirito woke up the next morning only to find that there was no one there with him, after having went back to sleep last night when hearing the voice he remembered Iris being deep in sleep. He called out several times for her but could not find her "Iris!" he gathered his things and left the house went out and went searching for her, 'where could she have gone' thought Kirito he opened his menu thinking to see if the party showed her location but unluckily that feature was not available to the first level of relationship, friends. When Kirito was looking over the party menu he noticed a beeping in the corner of his menu and remembered he forgot to allocate the skill points he earned through defeating <<Nepents>> yesterday he decide to up his <<dual swords>> skill and <<searching>> ability.

'Where could she have gone?' Kirito wandered as he waited yet another hour for her to arrive at the village's central house, while waiting Kirito had trained and gathered enough levels to go through the first 3 floors quickly with decent enough companions. 'Well guess I have waited long enough' Kirito thought as he jumped down from the central house's roof and then proceeded to take out a feathered writing accessory unique to this game which would allow certain players to read the message written with the accessory on walls, when they get a hands length away from the building a message would appear like a pm showing the message written. "Iris if you get this message, I will be going back to the city, after waiting there 2 days, i will travel to the 1st level dungeon" Kirito looked at the message seeing if there was any way to misunderstand it ".... Good enough" Kirito smiled. 'Well if she gets this message she will come to the tower' Kirito thought. Kirito unequipped 1 of his swords 'better hide this sword when going into the city or else people will gather round me' he equipped his light black leather armor and began to make way towards the city.
Hours ago, when Kirito was farming monsters he had found a special drop sword which had a 0.5% chance of dropping, he was amazed by his luck seeing how the sword would last 30 floors before being under-powered.

Kirito sighed, eating another loaf of bread while thinking 'even though we don't have any tired state in this game the fatigue from staying up to late and not eating is annoying' Kirito thought, walking through the forest's path. "sheeeeee" a cry sounded from the bushes, at times like these Kirito was glad he had invested in the search ability he looked through the bushes and saw an S-class cooking ingredient and nearly let out a gasp before covering his mouth, Kirito slowly took out his hunting knife and threw it at the <<Ragout>> rabbit with only a 50% chance of hitting he started to sweat thinking of the ingredient. "Lucky!" Kirito held up the S-class ingredient looking at it and imagining its taste, in SAO delicacies like the <<Ragout Meat>> was rare because no one wanted to cook and only thought of clearing the tower, ' I hope i find someone to cook this for me' Kirito joyfully whistled while nearing the town.

"AUGGHHH" another guy yelled as Kirito nearly killed him, "if you ever try to ambush me again you will die by my blade" Kirito said as he pierced his blade through the soft ground next to the man's ear "HEEEEHH" screeched the man as he pathetically ran away. Kirito sighed "what has this city come to while i was gone" over the streets there were holes in the ground of those trying to vandalize the place in retaliation to the GM and wherever you went you would see the strong picking on the weak. "Get of him you bastards!" Kirito yelled as he saved yet another person about to be PKed, "are you okay" he asked but as usual they would run and scream like he was some sort of villain "hah, whats the use" he said giving up while heading to the market, there he bought teleportation crystals, health crystals, and antidote crystals, but them being so expensive he could only buy 5 of each. Kirito looked around once more to see yet more senseless killing and sighed "I suppose I'll check 'there' out" he then proceeded towards the place at which players used to re-spawn at which now held a huge memorial with all players names and for most a empty line ready to be filled the moment they die, at the top of the memorial it showed how many players were left Kirito looked towards it "WHAT!!!" 'no it can't be...' "9279!!!!" in just 1 day nearly 750 people died too shocked to speak I could only look down at some of the names crossed out and read there reason of death falling in midair 'I see so they jumped off... those people probably thought the GM was lying so they jumped off the tower thinking they would wake up in real-life' Kirito quietly mourned for the lost people and headed out towards the towers entrance "it's time to explore" Kirito said with a grim smile

Asuna did not react the way she had before, she had lost her emotions somewhere in the depths of her mind and now her only thought was tp clear this game. 'He's useful to use towards the next dungeon' Asuna thought and said "let's go" without any hint of emotion in her voice. When they reached the tower's gates there was an NPC which was standing in-front the gates, she walked up to him and he said "do you wish to proceed into this accursed tower?", Asuna did not even stop for a single second to think as she said "yes" entered the tower.

Kirito was looking for members out side of the tower entrance browsing through players faces seeing if he recognized anyone from the beta-test but as he was "RING!!" in shock he looked toward the tower seeing a single girl and a boy enter the tower. "Shit, those idiots" Kirito rushed towards the entrance to the tower half way through the NPC's words he said "yes! dammit now let me in!" Kirito then rushed into the tower before the gates were fully open. Kirito reasoned that; if he lets these 2 die within the tower no-one would go into the tower for months on end 'that's only a excuse Kirito, you know the girl don't you' I bit my lip and raced through the halls to catch up.

Iris killed the next monster.
"This is idiotic... You know your only going to pull him down. Why not give up?" She thought to herself as she raised yet another level.
"I won't give up no matter what. I'm training just for this... I won't drag him down with me." She said as she killed another monster. After she was done, she quickly looked at the time.
"Oh crap!... I wonder if he's worried..." She said quietly to herself as she rushed back to the central house in the village and saw his note.
"I'll clear some levels before we go in." She said quietly. She wasn't usually this sure of herself but she knew one thing. She wanted to see her brother more than anything. She quickly ran as fast as she could to the tower, killing monsters and resting on the way. Once there, she barely saw Kirito enter.
"W-what?... but.. Never mind. I don't have time to think about this." She said quickly as she ran ahead.
"Yes." She stated quickly to the NPC and then rushed in and caught up with Kirito.
"Sorry... Was training..." She said quickly and quietly to Kirito when she caught up.
'Please, don't be mad...' She thought to herself.
